MLA allocates funds to clear sewer blocks T N a g a r M L A , V. P. Kalairajan allotted Rs 20 lakhs from his constituency development fund to buy another 300-litre jet rodding machine for the use of Metrowater workers to clear sewer blocks. The High court has prohibited manual clearing of sewage blocks. The MLA told that a cheque for the amount was handed over to the Metrowater chairman last week. Kalairajan said that he has been receiving a number of complaints of sewage blocks from residents and hoped that with the machine, the grievance redressal will pick up more speed. This year sees the first of a five-year campaign that will address the growing need for diabetes education and prevention programmes. World Diabetes Day is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community. While the themed campaigns last the whole year, the day itself is celebrated on November 14, to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting, who along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1922. Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013. The campaign slogan for 2009 is "Understand Diabetes and Take Control". Diabetes is a difficult condition. The disease imposes life-long demands on the 285 million people now living with diabetes and their families. People with diabetes must deliver 95% of their own care, so it is of paramount importance that they receive ongoing, high-quality diabetes education that is tailored to suit their needs and delivered by skilled health professionals. In addition, IDF estimates that over 344 million people worldwide are at a risk for type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in the many cases by helping and encouraging those at risk to maintain a healthy weight and take regular exercise. The key messages for everyone are: Know the diabetes risks and know the warning signs Know how to respond to diabetes and who to turn to Know how to manage diabetes and take control It is always advisable to follow regular diet at regular timings along with regular medicines to avoid fluctuations in sugar levels and avoid complications.

She continued with Saint Annamayya`s Paluku Thenela Thalli in Abheri set to Kandachapu, in which, she showed the essence of v aggeyakara`s intention through her abhinayam and dramatised narration.
The support received from Vidwan Vedantam Ramu on nattuvangam and vocal support along with Guru Sathyapriya and the support from Kuchipudi Kanakadurga on the vocal, P.V.Ramana on the flute and B.V.Ganesh on the mrudangam was commendable.

Beautiful rangapravesam
Bharatanatyam exponent Radha Prasanna performed her Kuchipudi rangapravesam under the able guidance of Guru Madhava Peddi Murthy at Rama Rao Kala mandapam. Aaacharya Choodamani Anitha Guha and Kuchipudi exponent Ve m p a t i R a v i S a n k a r graced the occasion. They both appreciated the efforts taken by Murthyand the caliber of Radha Prasanna. They highlighted the cooperation and support given by the accompanists and appreciated them. A suggestion was also given so that vocal support should adhere to the fixed format of
Kuchipudi so that the artiste can exhibit abhinaya in full form. The rangapravesam commenced with traditional Jayamu Jayamu in Ragamalika set to adi. Sivashtakam in Mohanam set to Kandachapu was enthralling. Oothukkadu's Maragadamani maya chela in Ragamalika was performed in the tharangam format, The nritta aspect on brass plate was traditional and amazing. In this Radha justified the training given by guru. Ranganadhude in Sowrashtram was impressive, and guru Moorthy has trained without spoiling the acharya
Vempati Chinnasathyam`s choreography which was filled with the nuances of abhinaya. In the dance, Nrusimha avatara and Krishna`s dance with gopikas were depicted with dramatised narration. Guru Moorthy has taken special interest in choreographing Annamayya`s Paluku Thenala Thalli in Abheri ragam set to Kandachapu. Dancer Radha also justified it through qualitative abhinayam. As she is an experienced artiste in bharathanatyam, the stage movements, foot work and body language were graceful except that she has to concentrate on lip movements of the sahithya. Rangapravesam was concluded with thillana followed by Aandal Pasuram. The entire show was supported by guru Moorthy (nattuvangam and c h o r e o g r a p h y ) , Umasankhar (vocal), B.V.Ganesh (mrudangam), G.R.S.Murthy (veena), Devarajan (flute), Rajagopal (special effects) a n d Va s a n t h a R a v i (comperer).
V.Bhargavi, disciple of Smt. Bhavani, performed a vocal concert with amazing voice culture and clear diction as part of Vadapalami Times' 52-Week Music Festival. The concert was held at Sankara Madam on November 1. Bhargavi, being IIIrd year student of B.Tech , has properly understood the techniques of Carnatic music. She commenced the concert with a Sree raga varnam in the traditional format and scored good impression from the audience. Her selection of Keerthanas on Goddess is apt to the vemue. Deekshithar`s Vaathapi Ganaapathim in Hamsadhwani was a good start. Most of the
keerthanas were composed by Deekshithar. Govardhana gireesam in Hindolam set to Roopakam and “Maheswara Maha Kalpa Maha thandava sakshine� a version from Lalitha Sahasranaamam in Hatana set to Roopakam were filled with devotion. Hemavathi ragam was chosen as the main item of the evening. A detailed alapana was performed along with kalpana swaram. Sree Kanthimatim in Hemavathi set to Adi was a special attraction and the response from the audience was extremely supportive. Sree Chakra Raja Simhasaneswari in Ragamalika was an example of rasanubhava. If
the vocalist concentrates on sahithya and its meaning, the rasanubhava can be maintained in a better manner. Kanden Kanden in Bagasree set to Tisra Nadai, as thukada was a pleasing one. Annamayya`s Brahmamokkate in Bowli depicted the essence of oneness. Mythrim Bhajathe in Ragamalika was appealing and was a good conclusion. She was supported by Harish on the violin and Gowri Shankar on the mrudangam. Both of them supported the vocalist in an understanding way and at the same time they proved themselves in the a l a p a n a a n d thaniavarthanam segments.

Rain of ragas
While it rained outside, it was raining ragas at the Narada Gana Sabha on November 5, as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, the sarod maestro enthralled Chennaiites with his exemplary music. The maestro who was in the city as part of the Bharat Sangeet Utsav floored the audience not only with his music but also by his humility. Saying that he belongs to the world of pure music, where there are no words, he said that he would love to visit the city at least once in a year. And the rasikas gave him a standing ovation even before he started his concert. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan was bestowed with Bharat Sangeet Samrat award on the occasion. Announcing that he is diverting from the usual way of playing one raga for two to three hours, Amjad Ali Khan started off with a beautiful composition in raga Shree. It was followed by a raga Shiv Kalyan and Durga. The maestro was at his best, sometimes jubilant, sometimes aggressive and at times meditative, taking the audience to the heights of ecstasy. And obviously his energetic playing electrified the audience and his flawless music mesmerized them. He also played a composition, Tarana, he composed as a tribute to the Sufi saint AmĂŽr Khusrow and the ragas Behag and Miyakhi Malhar with its fast rendition simply elated the
audience. His rendition of a composition set to 12.5 beats, were received by the audience with thumping round of applause. On audience demand, he also played raga Subbalakshmi, a raga he dedicated to his lovely wife Subbalakshmi much to the delight of the audience. The concluding pieces were a composition by R a b i n d r a n a t h Ta g o r e followed by an Assamese composition. And the maestro took the audience on a journey from Bengal to Assam duly describing the nature through music. And towards the end the audience not only joined him in putting the tala, but also stood up expressing their respect and appreciation through a standing ovation.
