Chendur Diabetes Speciality Centre, Ashok Nagar conducted a special camp for diabetes on April 5. In the special camp diabetic patients were screened for diabetic kidney damage. About forty members attended the camp and underwent urine micro albumin assay. D r. A . S h a n m u g a m , consultant Diabetologist at Chendur Diabetes Specialty Centre, said that urine micro albumin assay is useful to detect diabetic kidney damage at a very early stage. He added that diabetes is a leading cause for kidney failure. More
than 50 per cent of kidney failure is due to diabetes. By urine micro albumin assay, diabetic kidney damage can be detected at a very early stage and sometimes can be reversed. Using specific medications like ACE blockage, early diabetic kidney damage can be brought back to normal. According to Dr. A.Shanmugam, among the members screened for micro albumin assay, one third of people were positive for assay and they were given specific medications to prevent kidney failure.

In order to reach great heights in performing arts one needs lot of dedication and motivation. Renowned guru and danseuse Sheela Unnikrishnan is one who has carved a place for herself in the cultural arena of classical dance with her sincere and devote approach to the art form. Sheela's journey to become a dance teacher has many twists and turns. Sheela who dreamed of having a medical career incidentally is now a most sought after guru by the young artistes. Sheela recalls that it was her mother who encouraged her to learn dance. She was fortunate have had initial training from Sundaram, disciple of Natyacharya Maangadu Dorairaj Ayyangar, as first guru, at the age of 10 years. She had her arangetram along with her sisters Shoba and Sharmila and
the trio started their dance journey in the name of Villivakkam Sisters. Sheela went on to learn K u c h i p u d i f r o m D r. Vempati Chinna Satyam as she was very passionate about Kuchipudi. And due to some unavoidable circumstances, she started teaching dance. In 1988, she started her dance school Sri Devi Nrithyalam and there has been no looking back. Sheela is famous for implementing some of the techniques of Kuchipudi in Bharatanatyam and says that she drew flak from many quarters for that. “But I was able to convince the connoisseurs of art as I successfully incorporated some of the nuances of K u c h i p u d i i n Bharatanatyam as it improved the grace,� she says. In the last music season Sheela`s production namely Shadaaksharam,
received lot of critical acclaims. She attributes it t o the dedication and involvement of her team. Mrs.Gayathri, guide of Sheela takes complete care in dramatised narration and screenplay of the theme. Sheela considers children as God's gift and is full of praise for their observation, involvement and implementation. Sheela has many credits and titles to her. In 2005, Sheela presented the d a n c e b a l l e t , Balaramayanam in front of the then President Dr.Abdul Kalam. She also has the best guru award to her kitty from VDS Arts Academy. Sheela is married to Unnikrishnan and is running her school in R.K.Shanmugasalai of K.K.Nagar. And this danseuse has one dream, to get ICCR empanelment.

It's mention worthy that the Music Festival has been offering opportunities to vocalists, instrumentalists and dancers equally to encourage their talents. Mr. C. Priya commenced her recital with Pushpanjali in Gambheer Nattai set to adi thalam in a traditional way. The Jathiswaram performed in vasantha set to roopakam depicted the dancer`s knowledge in sruthi and laya. It is highly appreciable that dancer could digest the essence of varnam sahithya and able to execute the abhinaya and nuances of footwork, nrutta and body language. Thuraiyoor Rajagopal Sarma `s composition Ninne Nera Namminanura in Hatana depicted Krishna leela and the essence of d i v i n i t y o f t h e vaggeyakara. The dancer
justified guru`s training in all aspects. Chinni Krishna rara, the sanchara charanam was executed with dramatization and apt abhinayam. The body language was very good in the item Natharmudimel in punnagavarali ragam. It is note-worthy that guru selected one Christian song, Namo Namo Saronin Rojave Solomon Rajave in a folk style which the dancer performed gracefully. She concluded her programme with Hamsanandi raga thillana, a composition of great GNB. The music support for the recital came through audio cassette.

Kids Play Zone (KPZ) conducted their First Annual Day function on April 4 at Shri Kamatchi Mahal. Children enthusiastically participated in the events such as singing, dancing, story telling. On the occasion awards, medals and certificates were given to kids for participating in sports events and extra curricular activities during the academic year. KPZ provide education to
develop children in the age group of 2 to 3.5 physically, morally and mentally. KPZ is starting an activity centre for children above 5 years during the summer vacation. It will have sessions in spoken Hindi, spoken English, basic English grammer, basic mathematics, Carnatic music, story telling, drawing, glass painting, pot painting, chess & carom. It also will provide computer courses for
students and parents to learn Mms word, excel, programming in c, c++, java, paint, animation, flash and internet. New admission for 2009-2010 has started and the first few registrations will be waved off from admission / registration fees at both Kkodambakkam and KK Nagar centers.
