Medical & news Free cancer screening held What is CGMS? In what way it is useful in diabetes? CGMS is the short form of Continuous Glucose Monitoring System. The CGMS system is used to continuously monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes. Some diabetic patients have more fluctuations in blood sugar values in a single day. For such people, CGMS will be more useful. CGMS contains two components: an external glucose sensor and a monitor. The sensor is typically worn for a period of 24 to 72 hours, and provides electronic signals to the monitor for every ten seconds. The monitor averages the glucose measurements every five minutes, and also stores glucose values. The sensor continuously measures the glucose values in the interstitial fluid (liquid found between the cells of the body) and gives them as electronic signals to the monitor. These glucose values are downloaded in to the computer from the monitor and we can assess the glucose levels for the past 24 to 72 hours in every five minutes. We will see these glucose values in a graphic pattern for the last three days. With these values we can clearly assess the timing of low sugar values (hypoglycemia) and timing of high sugars values too. Once we know about the low and high sugar values in a day, we can adjust the insulin or drug dosage according to the graphic pattern. CGMS is very useful for diabetes persons having frequent and high fluctuations in blood sugar values within a day (Brittle diabetes), diabetes persons in adolescent age, diabetes persons with suspected somogyi phenomenon and Type 1 diabetes persons with improper control and dosage. The picture of CGMS is shown here. CGMS is a useful modern gadget for those affected with diabetes whenever they have high fluctuations in their sugar levels and we can assess the proper timing of medications to avoid low and high sugar values.
