Swine flu and diabetes Know more about swine flu

The WHO has raised the Influenza Pandemic Alert to the highest level which is 6. Already India has seen over 1000 confirmed cases of Swine Flu and the threat of a full blown epidemic in India is very real. The best we citizens can do is to keep ourselves informed about the happenings and the steps we can take to prevent the spread of the flu. Am I more likely to get swine flu if I have diabetes? Diabetes and swine flu are not associated. If you have diabetes, there is no greater likelihood of you developing swine flu. However, those people with diabetes that develop swine flu may find blood sugar level become affected, and diabetes management and treatement must be adjusted accordingly. Swine flu can be dangerous for people with diabetes because it can worsen blood glucose treatment and require more active treatment. If you are diagnosed with swine flu and you have diabetes, your doctor will provide you with guidance.

The scare of swine flu has been affecting normal life in the city and with the death of a four-year-old in Velacherry, parents are the worst scared. Vadapalani Times talks to Dr Arunachalam on the same issue. Dr Arunachalam gives a clear picture about the signs, symptoms, prevention methods and treatment facilities. Cause of the disease: Swine influenza (also called H1N1 flu, swine flu and pig flu) is an infection by any one of several types of swine influenza virus. Swine influenza virus is common throughout pig populations worldwide. Transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not always lead to human influenza. If transmission does cause human

influenza, it is called zoonotic swine flu. People with regular exposure to pigs are at increased risk of swine flu infection. The meat of an infected animal poses no risk of infection when properly cooked. How it spreads Spread primarily through respiratory droplets of infected persons, through coughing, sneezing, contact with respiratory droplets. It can also spread through surface contacts. Kings Institute Guindy & TN Govt Hospital Tondiarpet are the two places to identify swine flu virus in Chennai. Symptoms: This virus easily affects the people having reduced amount of white blood corpuscles (WBC). Children below five years and aged people, who have low immunity levels are susceptible to the flu. The symptoms of swine flue are similar to seasonal flu. Important clinical features of swine influenza include fever, and upper respiratory symptoms such as cough and sore throat. Head ache, body ache, running nose or stuffy nose

Fatigue diarrhea and vomiting have also been observed. Severe fatigue, throat pain, cough and fever above 101째 may be symptoms of swine flu. People having any one of symptoms mentioned above should consult doctors to check whether they have contracted the flu or not. Along with the above said symptoms, if people are suffering with diarrohea and vomiting, they should undergo the prescribed test in the Government hospitals. Proper treatment in the initial stage can completely cure swine flu. Prevention: Follow simple steps as cough etiquettes (covering mouth & nose with handkerchief or tissue paper while coughing) Stay at least an arm's length from persons coughing or sneezing, avoid gathering and wash your hands frequently Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage

your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food. Try to stay in good general health. If infected with influenza, one must stay at home, away from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them and should seek medical assisstance at designated centres immediately. Whenever children go outside, they should cover their nose with cloth or mask. This is an easy way for the parents to follow and prevent their children from swine flu. The cloth should be changed on alternate days and washed properly. Parents can mark the interior part of the cloth so that every time the child wears it, it is properly worn. It would be ideal if people temporarily stop going to crowded places like, temples, cinema halls and commercial areas. Treatment : Tamilflu is the medicine for swine flu. It is the Central Govt. who distributes these tablets to all the states of India. Private medical shops are not authorized to sell this medicine. Poor people can get these tablets without spending money from the

What are the symptoms of swine flu? Swine flu (H1N1) symptoms are similar to common flu. They include body aches, headache, coughs, sore throat, tiredness and fever. If you have diabetes and fear you have swine flu, you should contact your healthcare professional immediately.
