Seminar on diabetes I have been a diabetic for the past two years. My friend, who has been a diabetic for the past ten years, suggested me to take postprandial blood sugar after having a heavy meal along with some sweets. Kindly suggest me the exact method of doing postprandial blood sugar test? Thanks for asking a nice question. Most of the diabetes people have some basic doubts like this. While doing postprandial blood sugar test, two important things should be kept in the mind. The postprandial blood sugar test has to be done two hours after taking food and the regular tablets as suggested by your doctor on the day of the blood test. The postprandial blood sugar levels should imitate the average blood sugar values on the non-testing days too. The diabetologist or your family doctor will prescribe medicines according to your postprandial blood sugar values assuming that these postprandial values resemble the daily blood sugar levels. It is always advisable to do postprandial blood sugar test after having the regular food. If you do the test with heavy food and sweets, blood sugar values may be higher than normal blood sugar values. And your doctor may prescribe increased dosage of diabetes medicines and excess dosage will dangerously reduce the blood sugar values on the normal days, and may lead to coma too. Some people are doing postprandial blood tests without taking medicines on the day of blood test. This is also a wrong method of blood sampling. So kindly do postprandial blood tests after two hours of taking normal food with regular medicines.

AGE India Foundation and T.Nagar Exnora Women’s Club (TEXWOC) jointly organised a free workshop on Diabetes Awareness and detection at their training hall in T.Nagar. The programme was sponsored by Spearheaders Leadership Foundation Radhika Anand, president of TEXWOC stressed the importance of awareness about diabetes. She said that today, India tops the list in the number of diabetics and almost 15 per cent of Tamil Nadu’s population is diabetic. She said, “The first thing we should do is to spread awareness among the general public so that diabetes can be prevented and controlled.Anand Laxman, founder secretary, AGE India Foundation expressed concern as nowa-days, more and more youngsters are diagnosed with the disease. He spoke on the necessity of

educating today’s children and youngsters on healthy food habits. The kids’ world revolves around fast food, soft drinks, computer games, TV – a lifestyle with unhealthy food and negligible exercise. He said that parents should wake up and save their children. He lamented on how we people have come to neglect our traditional food which was both balanced and rich in fibre and other nutrients.R.Govindaraj, joint general secretary, Exnora International, appreciated Dr. Paneerselvam and said that if leading professionals like him, spare some time from their professional commitments and make it a point to interact with the general public and create awareness, we can do much more than this. “We should live together and

help each other”, he said. The chief guest of the evening was K. T h i u r m a n g a i A l w a r, executive engineer, Zone 8, Corporation of Chennai.Dr. A. Panneerselvam M.D. Diab , Consultant Diabetologist, Aruna Diabetes Centre conducted the programme. He gave a detailed explanation of the disease, its symptoms, methods of detection, ways of prevention, which includes regular exercises and dietary control.
