Success Stories
Credentials Einstein Academy is the junior division of Queen Elizabeth Academy. We have been established for over 8 years to offer high quality education to our students from grade 3-12. Our students are admitted to top universities - Waterloo, Queen’s, Western, Wilfrid Laurier, with scholarship ranging from $2,000 to $23,000. QEA is accredited by the Ministry of Education to offer high school credits towards OSSD.
Class
Aaron G. had come to our Academy in grade 7. By grade 9 his grade had improved by 20%+ into the 90s
Choose from our Math or English program Class once a week, 1.5 hours Assessment at start. Test once a month Small class sizes (15 students maximum), low teacher:student ratio Lesson based learning. We teach lessons each time and schedule a work period where our instructor walks around and helps each student
How your children will benefit Build foundation for your children with preparation for high school success
Fix up foundation gaps in the area of fractions, integers, multiplication, writing, reading and more Our lessons focus on understanding the concept. What is a fraction? What do you do with fractions? It’s not just memorizing equations or steps. This will prepare your children for high school Lessons include problem solving, word problems (Math) and critical thinking (English) in each class. This accounts for 30% of grades in high school

Our lessons facilitate understanding, not just memorizing steps:
The Drill! A series of problems to work in class, for warm up
20 min
Taking up homework Teacher selects questions and takes up homework Math Lesson Division: What is division? We use diagrams to explain the concept of divisor, remainder, dividend. How do you do the operation?
It is important for children to understand math. If a student is merely memorizing steps, then they might get away with simple math like multiplication in younger grades, but they will struggle in the upper grades when the teacher changes the questions.
20 min
How do we teach understanding? It is knowing why and what you are doing on each step. Take division as an example, what are you doing when you divide? What does remainder mean? Students need to know what each step is used for.

We explain the concept of division: what are you doing when you divide? You are simply grouping the cows into groups. Number of cows in each group is the divisor. And if there is any cow that’s left over, then it’s the remainder.
Building Foundations: Foundation are the building blocks that students need to master. Since math is cumulative, it’s important to understand and excel at each building block. This involves understanding the rules, which we teach under each lesson, then work with a large diversity of questions. With practice and hard work, the student can acquire a good foundation! The foundation blocks are: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fraction, decimal, BEDMAS integers, algebra, exponents, and solving equations. Our lessons cover each of these foundation blocks, one lesson at a time. How do we build a strong foundation with the student?

Problem Solving Lessons - Think Outside the Box Children have challenges with word problems. Why? Because students are trained to think in a linear manner - step 1, step 2...and get an answer. This might be sufficient for young grades, but once the student reaches middle school or high school it will become a barrier. 30% of the high school math grade is based on problem solving and application, and this makes the difference between a B and an A.
We teach problem solving techniques in every Math lesson. How do we teach problem solving? The approach is different. Instead of doing math through step 1, 2.., children need to draw a diagram of the problem. They need to understand what is happening, and what they are trying to get. Next they need to brainstorm different possible approaches, and accept the fact that you can’t get an answer right away. Will this approach get you closer to the answer? Then go further. We teach many different techniques to help children to think outside of the box, and develop solutions, not just answers.
1.
Draw a diagram of the problem
Sample:
2.
Gather info. Why is the info given in this specific way?
3.
Develop possible approaches. Check which one gets you closer to the answer
There are 4 flags, red, green, yellow, blue. You can make any combination of 1 flag, 2, 3 and 4. How many different combinations can you get?

Writing Critical Thinking
What does our reading lesson look like? Step 1: Pre-reading: students should ask a series of questions to focus on picking out key info: What? When? Where? Why?

Writing Critical Thinking
Reading:
The key to reading comprehension, is not just reading the book, but having the child summarize what he has read in his own words. The second key is to teach the child to pick up key information: What happened? Why did the main character do what they did? Where? When? What was the outcome? The child will then summarize the story. In our advanced module, our students are asked to “create their own ending with creative writing. We will also teach vocabulary. Not just memorizing keywords, but they will learn how the vocabulary is used in the book. In our lessons, we cover a variety of reading materials: short stories, books, essays, scientific articles, and newspapers. In this way the children are exposed to different writing styles. This will be very useful for their future.
Step 2: Reading and discussion. After the students read the text, our teacher will sit together with them to discuss the key components of the text. e.g. Why did Harry Potter go into the cave and what happened?
Step 3: Summarizing and other exercises Our students summarize the story in their own words, with other exercise: such as, creating a comic book, drawing the key scene, acting it out in a play, or presenting the story to the class. It is fun and interactive!
Practice. Practice. Practice! We assign reading homework to our students and there is no short cut to success in reading!

What does our writing lesson look like?
Writing:
Writing Critical Thinking
The challenge for children in writing is that they write the way they text on mobile phones. The issue is more than just sentence structure. Often times they do not know how to start. Writing is more than just writing paragraphs on paper. It is the entire process: brainstorming, organizing ideas, picking out key points, writing the essay. We teach the entire writing process, so that students will gain experience and become proficient at expressing themselves! The 4 steps in writing:
1
Brainstorm ideas
2
Organize information
Step 1: Brainstorming What? When? Where? Why? The scene. The details. The message. What do you want the reader to know?
Step 2: Organize information
3
Select key info and build on the idea
4
Writing
We teach mind maps and other tools for students to organize information.
Step 3: In our advanced module, we teach students essay writing. How to write an introduction. What constitutes a good thesis? How to wrap an argument around evidence and quotes. Your child will learn important skills in preparation for high school. For our gr ade 3-6 students, we teach writing for a variety of exercises: personal stories, short stories, instructions, book reports. Students will build their foundational skills in writing over time and be well prepared to succeed in high school projects and essays. Writing homework: Practice makes perfect! We provide 3 writing exercises each week, and a writing test once a month (where we will mark and give comments on the child’s writing).
Select key points and build the info We teach how to pick the key points and build an argument or story around that point.
Step 4: Writing We teach different sentence structures. How do you express yourself differently? What sentence structure is appropriate based on what you are writing: journal, story, essay, science. We will demo different types of sentences and show children how to write them.

Writing Critical Thinking
Grammar:
Grammar is challenging to children because they don’t know the grammar rules. Although it is not just memorizing the rules: it’s about understanding them and applying them. Our teachers will outline the rules, then demostrate how the rules are used in various contexts and situations. Giving examples is one way, and the other involves children creating their own sentences based on the grammar rules. Reading will help the children to understand grammar, then it becomes spontaneous. This involves a longer process, and this is why we give a lot of reading to our class.

Writing Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking:
Critical thinking, or inferencing is one of the main challenges for grade 7 and 8 students. The EQAO is one of the most difficult sections. It’s important to nurture critical thinking at a young age because it accounts for 30% of their English grade starting in high school.
What does our grammar lessons look like? Step 1: Explain the grammar rules would have.... if..... (conditional)
Step 2: Teach how the rules are used
have run if I had known it was going to rain. I would
Step 3: Making sentences with the grammar rules children exercises - create 10 sentences using the new rule
What is inferencing or critical thinking? Critical thinking requires the student to apply higher level concepts to the reading materials. High level concepts include how the text relates to society, a theme (such as revenge or love in Shakespeare), or the student’s personal experience. The student needs to generate a thesis and write an essay on it. How do we teach inferencing? Think outside the box. We will ask a series of questions to stimulate deeper thinking, to get the message or create their own view of the theme.
