STUIDO TOPIC Lima metropolitano...
winter 2019
Lima, a city which was established based on the advent of colonialism, is now facing a new form of settlement. This new form of settlement is called in various fashions from slum or favelas to a more literate version, kinetic or informal towns or neighborhoods. The citizens of the informal parts are immigrant but in the case of Lima, it is more about rural to urban immigration or domestic immigration. The immigration per se is not a challenge for the city. The way; however, it is affecting the city, and its topological pattern is more and more provoking attention for this Latin American megacity.

FOCUS
Infrastructure and Geographical Constraints
architecture portfolio
Maps are showing the urban structure of Lima. Based on the studies, the wealthier center near the ocean has a dramatic contrast to the informal settlements on the eastern peripheries. These contrasts are evident regarding urban amenities like urban parks or accessible water. Geography is one of the main reseaon accelerating this difference within Lima.
4
Immigrants have no choice rather than going to the hills - with the force of geography. Furthermore, it makes it impossible to reach proper jobs in the wealthier parts. Urban topology map here proves that each node in the fingers are blocking fast and direct access from the peripheries to the center.
Folded Reality The zoomed in topological map depicts the socioeconomic condition of Lima. Here comes the first idea for the project: access and destination.
STUDY Space of Flow
Based on this sociological theory, the zoomed in the version of the chain would be a 3D graph, indicating each social class in a city has its system of physical spaces or hubs to interact. - Accumulation of wealth - Public Amenity - Health - Public Entertainment - ....
The initial idea was to make a way to overcome geography — a new parallel infrastructure system that folds this unbalanced chain.
Folded Reality
Space of flow is a social/cultural theory by Manuel Castells. Based on this theory, social classes are interacting on three layers: a layer of the electronic exchange, layer of hubs and nods and layer of spatial management.

SuperHubs, the stations, are meant to host various programs to full fille the public demands. The one below is in an informal settlement. It can provide houses, gyms and open kitchens, etc. The spatial configuration of the superhubs is democratic

What the drawings are the final product of each hub but especially for the informal settlements, it has a progressive nature. It can be a platform for new houses, a school or dining center. There is a difference between superhubs in the informal and formal. In the informal, it is more undetermined gradual, but in the inner city, it is more determined and one-time-built.

Metropolitan Lagos ...
Previously the capital of Nigeria, Lagos is widely known for its curious consequences of fast modernization. Shiny skyline at the heart of the business district often misleads us of the reality that occurs in the periphery of the city. Due to domestic migration, a massive wave of migration hit the city without a proper investigation for the infrastructure. Housing is one of the major challenges for the city. As a result, three-quarter of the Lagos citizens may live in the slums. The project thinks of a new stadium located in Olusosun Landfill. Once in the periphery, the landfill is now at the heart of the city bringing environmental challenges.
14
Site A wide range of urban environments surrounds the landfill like a highway junction. But the majority of the land use is residential. Critical needs of the four types of neighborhoods shaped the first ideas.

CITIES
Observation Matters!
A city, no need to say a good one, usually has three layers of functions stack on top of each other. The pavilion provides these three layers by distorting them to create a unique appearance of a city within a city.

The phrase “urban facility best describes the status of the pavilion after the fair, including a shopping space to attract the people to come and use the pavilion, gallery spaces for artists to fill the void between urban art and urban life, accomodation for the homeless. And more importantly, myriad of public spaces for hosting public events like the farmers market, presidential campaigns or many other public activities that can bring life to the city.

Unlike the exterior of the pavilion - a monolithic concrete curved surfaces - the interior is much more delicate made of metal and glass — arrays of thin beams supporting the whole structures designed to be exposed. A geometrical spiral staircase pierces the slab which does not touch reach the concrete walls to reinforce this dramatic contrast.

TEHRAN
Despite its relatively short history as opposed to other Iranian historical cities, Tehran, Iran’s capital, is famously considered as a city with various architectural styles. Many social and political changes had and still have, significant roles in Tehran’s hectic history. In each era, according to the prevailing political atmosphere, a new style flourished. Each style has left remarkable architectural pieces. Studying the history of Tehran’s architecture, the buildings are categorized into three main groups: Traditional, modern or international, retrospective and critically regional.
Modernism needs attention. Why? Along the groups mentioned, the Modern buildings seem to need more attention since aging has brought them many failures. Furthermore, due to their function, which is mostly governmental offices, these buildings are in direct contact with people. From another view, because of their fundamental design concepts, these buildings are seemingly static, not capable of being connected to the vibrancy of the current city.
Design approach Designing an extension for the Ministry of Culture and Culture encompassed two different approaches: A design through representation and a design through urban development.

PROCESS Representation
architecture portfolio
Geometry is an integral part of Iranian architecture. It is remarkable in its language on every level, plans, sections, elevations, details, decorations, everything! So it was applied in the public plaza to represent those magnificent precedents.
A plaza is supposed to be in the most interaction to the public so it should represent most of the motifs. Geometry, pattern, and light are the most prominent ones. Triangle grid is flexible in a way that facilitates the structural and spatial necessities.
The place seems so familiar to me, I have not seen it before though. Everything is from our architecture motifs.

Using reflection is a common and essential feature of Iran›s traditional architecture. Water is the most element to create this effect. Most of the majestic architecture in the country has a pool of fountain to enhance the magnificence of the place.

Due to the construction of the tunnel and its structural concerns, the buildings above it gradually evacuated and mostly destroyed.

RESEARCH The Questionnaire
architecture portfolio
Architecture is a proper response to the people’s desires. To do so, a survey conducted to understand what the residents of the area wish to have if it is supposed to design a community center for them. The questions were mostly about their current condition and their level of satisfaction about it. The people were asked to rate their security, access to public transportation, the quality, and
“We are far from butchery or bakery . Having a praying room and some offices for the local council is of importance.”
“Our neighborhood is crowded enough, please do not make it more crowded! We need a neat and organized place and more importantly, a bridge over Gandhi Street. It’s dangerous.”
“The security is good. But it gets a little dark at nights. We need more light especially for the parks.” 52
quantity of public facilities and spaces like grocery stores or drugstores and so on around the neighborhood. Also, they were asked to mention their most essential needs and desires that the center had to satisfy.
“We have to walk a long and difficult distance to access the bus and taxi stations in the Valiasr Street.”
“The condition of the green areas are poor. Tall trees should be added to the parks not the short ones because of security.
