THE VAFA SUPPORTING WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN It can be difficult to write a column each week on a Tuesday morning when it will be read by most on a Saturday. The landscape can change so rapidly that I can be left looking rather silly; however, I feel it is appropriate for me to speak about the comments made by the Triple M journalists regarding Caroline Wilson. The community landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade and unfortunately it seems the football culture hasn’t kept pace with that change. Football change room talk is now no longer acceptable behind closed doors and certainly not in the public arena. The behaviours at football clubs must reflect community values. This year the VAFA aligned with Australia’s White Ribbon organisation. White Ribbon is an organisation working to prevent the most common and pervasive form of male violence – that towards women. All forms of violence are unacceptable and White Ribbon believes in the capacity of the individual to change and to encourage change in others. It believes our generation can and must work towards stopping domestic violence. Through primary prevention initiatives and an annual campaign, White Ribbon works to change the attitudes and behaviours that lead to men’s violence against women. Clubs are able to secure a speaker from White Ribbon who will come and educate our players currently all male - on domestic violence. I have logged on to whiteribbon.org.au and taken the oath to stand with other Australian men and women determined to treat all women with respect and to intervene safely when someone else doesn’t. Taking the oath is a symbol of my intention to be part of real change. The VAFA may be viewed as one of the most
traditional organisations in Melbourne but, like all organisations, endeavour to lead the community in cultural change. I have met personally with about 50 VAFA clubs over the past month and one of the major topics on the Agenda has been the introduction of a VAFA women’s league. I am proud that each of these clubs have taken this back to their committees and as a result the VAFA will, in 2017, be the first senior competition outside the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) to administer a women’s competition. We already have seven clubs and nine teams competing in the VWFL. Melbourne University has had a women’s team for decades and now play in the Swisse VFL Women’s competition and have two other teams competing in the VWFL. La Trobe University has had a side for about a decade and in the last few years they have been joined by Kew, AJAX, Brunswick NOBSP, St Kevin’s and Fitzroy, who now have two teams. The response to these meetings has been outstanding. The VAFA is confident the new competition will have at least 10 teams which is will be sensational. These teams will be completely amalgamated with the club to make a fully inclusive environment. With this inclusiveness, cultural changes will need to occur which will reflect community standards - not male football standards. Unfortunately after the events over the past week there is still a long way to go. The VAFA will work with AFL Victoria and the VWFL to ensure our clubs are understanding of the cultural changes that need to occur. A first step a club may take is to become part of the White Ribbon campaign and get all their players and supporters to take the oath against women’s violence. DE LA ALL CLASS William Buck Premier football returned from a one-week bye over the weekend, with most having used the break to aid necessary recovery induced by the first half of a hard-hitting and frenetic season, while 17 others represented the Big V against the SAAFL. In any other year, a 4-6 record after 10 rounds of football would not incur a great deal of panic by any stretch. However, if St Kevin’s were to fall to University Blacks on Saturday it would have taken something special to climb their way back into finals contention due to the tight-knit nature of the competition. If Will Coates had not flown across the front of the pack, completed the chest mark and converted in the final two minutes for the thrilling two-point victory, SKOB would be 4-6, two games and more than 5% out of the top five and in need of seven wins from their final eight games. But Will Coates did fly across the front of the pack, complete the chest mark and convert in one of SKOB’s most impressive wins for the season. Billy Kanakis added three goals and took his season tally to 20, while Conor Ross and Jordan Gysberts continued their rich vein of form as they racked up disposals at will. SKOB’s fire power up forward has never been questioned, with Stephen Gilham (17), the Salopek brothers (17) and Kanakis (20) helping them to the secondmost points for (86.6ppg) in the competition. They will want to increase the disparity between points for and against if they are to challenge in the winter months, currently allowing the thirdmost points against (82.5). The loss brings an incredible five-game winning streak to an end for the Blacks and causes them to fall from third to fifth. Lochie Dornauf’s three goals moves him to equal-second on the goal kicking leader board, with 20 coming from his past six games. De La Salle solidified their position at the top of the William Buck Premier ladder with 2
@NickArmistead a comprehensive 61-point victory against Old Trinity in what was tipped to be a top-ofthe-table blockbuster. Despite missing Jake Williams and Antony Forato – the former a late withdrawal due to illness – De La dominated from Q1 to Q4 and showcased their intentions moving into the second half of the season. Ed Clinch (four goals), Adrian Indovino (three) and Tom Nicholls (three) kicked 10 goals between them, while Damien Rayson, Jacob Gotch, Sam Haslem and Sam Williams were all class through the midfield. Andrew Kyriacopoulos used his bigger body and elite skillset to combat De La through the middle of the ground, but the T’s were simply unable to curb the ladder leaders’ impressive all-round game. The loss was the T’s biggest since Round 11 2014 when they fell to St Bernard’s by 69 points. They’ve now won just two points from their past four outings and this weekend’s match-up against Uni Blacks shapes as their most important for the season. The battle of the elite defensive units lived up to all expectations as University Blues defeated Collegians by 22 points at Uni Oval. Second on the ladder for a reason, the Blues are the secondmost bankable side in the competition, and when the weather dictates a slog they are the most bankable. Their average points against of 57.1 ranks them number one after they surpassed the Lions (58.8) over the weekend. Just two goals were kicked to half time (one each), before the Blues resorted back to a six-man forward line set up in the second half and kicked five of the next seven. Tom Silvestro made it two standout performances in two rounds for the Blues, while Tim Geappen returned and offered another target up forward. Tom Penberthy’s season continues to go from strength to strength for the Lions as he stood tall for four quarters. haven’t seen a man his size with such impressive handles below his knees. However, the Lions are on equal points with both Xavs and SKOB but with an inferior percentage. Speaking of Old Xaverians, they are looming as the most likely to make a top four run over the next month after they defeated St Bernard’s by 58 points at Toorak Park. They welcomed, and will welcome, back a number of key personnel including vice-captain, Ben Kennedy. Kennedy was one of the Xavs’ best alongside Jordan Kelly on the back of his VFL mid-season Team of the Year nomination. Over the next couple of weeks, we will likely see the return of skipper, John Shaw, Michael Darvell and Tyson Thomas. Shaw’s inclusion will offer significant relief, with Matt Handley and Tom Williams able to spend the majority of their time up forward with Brendan Goss after he put top-scored with three majors. Old Melburnians leaped above Old Trinity into third position on the ladder after they accounted for Old Carey by 78 points at Sportscover Arena. Five goals from Al Armstrong drew him level with Dornauf in equal-second position on the goal kicking leader board with 24, while Big V representatives, Tom Paule and George HurleyWellington, showcased their supreme poise as the two best players on the ground. It was the Big V rep show as Sam Cust flew the flag for the Panthers after he was named in their best for the eighth time in 10 games. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any easier for the Panthers as they face Uni Blues and SKOB over the next two weeks.

MONASH SHOCK UPSET! So we’ve entered that stage of the season where teams play each other a second time and it’s always interesting to see how the teams fare the second time around. In Round 10 we had three reversals from earlier in the season, most notably Monash upsetting league leaders Beaumaris by seven points, giving the Sharks their first loss for the season. Hampton also got on the board for their second win of the season, holding on against Old Brighton. Ajax and Fitzroy contested a crucial encounter at Gary Smorgon Oval, with both teams in the middle group of teams fighting for the fourth spot. Last time these two teams met, in Round 3, Ajax prevailed by three goals. The Roys started better, kicking the first two goals through Luke Edwards and Chris Doherty. The home side bounced back with three goals in as many minutes thanks to David Fayman, Josh Ludski and Brad Caplan. They continued to control the play but kicked four straight behinds through the middle stages of the quarter, and two late goals to Aiden Burke and Matthew Brown gave the Roys a two point lead at quarter time. The Jackas set up the win with a four-goals-to-none second term, and kept Fitzroy at arm’s length for the rest of the match. Ajax went in without Ash Burstin and Warren Steinberg but Dean Rotenberg returned and contributed four goals. David Fayman and Brad Caplan continued their excellent seasons, kicking three goals each and were among the best. Fitzroy lost Tom Cheshire and Max Davie for the clash, but Rory Angiolella played his best game for the season and Chris Doherty was again very good with a couple of goals. It was a costly loss for the Roys, who slipped from fourth to seventh after Monash, Parkdale and Ajax all posted wins. It was second versus third at Camberwell Sports Ground as the Cardinals took on St Bedes/ Mentone. Their previous contest was a cracker on Anzac Day, which the Tigers took out by seven points. Luke Velluto got the Tigers on the board first but Tim Macmillan and Conor O’Beirne replied for the Cardinals. Pat Tyquin levelled things up for the Tigers with a clever soccer goal before Jack Bull roved the pack from a throw in and finished off a nice running goal, giving the Cardinals a slight edge. The Tigers then broke the game open with 4
four goals in the last ten minutes with contributions from Velluto, Chris Richards and two from Mitch Coen. The second term produced just three goals as the visitors increased their lead slightly before a ten-goal-to-four second half gave the Tigers a commanding 70-point victory, leaving them just half a game behind ladder leaders Beaumaris. Jack Furey led the Cardinals, who were without regular goalkicker James Sansom, with three goals. Jono Daggian, Matthew Seed and Aidan Franetic, who have kicked 45 goals between them this season, were all held goalless. Luke Velluto and Michael Barnes continued their excellent form for the Tigers, kicking eight goals between them. Despite the loss, the Cardinals remain entrenched in the top three, two games ahead of fourth place. Old Brighton and Hampton faced off at South Road, with the Rovers fighting to keep their Premier B future alive. The Tonners won their Round 3 clash by 21 points. Neither side could find the big sticks with any regularity in the first quarter, with three goals from twelve scoring shots. The Rovers broke the game open in the second quarter, kicking seven goals to two and taking a commanding six goal half time lead. Harry Hill scored the first and last goals of the quarter for the Tonners but in between it was all Hampton, with contributions from Nathan Smith, Ed Turner, Sam Bradford and two from Jack Toouli and Ned Fallon. A six goal deficit looked like a big ask, but the Tonners roared back into business, kicking five goals to one in the third quarter and when Tom King converted a free during the final term, the home side actually hit a most unlikely lead. In the end the Rovers did enough, claiming their second victory of the season by seven points. For the Tonners, Harry Cannon was strong in defence, Hamish Graham played well in the ruck and Michael Karayannis, after scoring the opener with a terrific dash around the boundary, put in a spirited performance. Dan Anthony inspired the fight-back with a strong third term and he finished TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Hampton v Monash Old Brighton v AJAX St Bedes/Mentone v Beaumaris Old Scotch v Parkdale Old Haileybury v Fitzroy

with three goals. The Rovers win means they are now level with the Tonners at the bottom of the ladder, only one game back from Old Haileybury. The Parkdale 2016 rollercoaster continued in Round 10 against Old Haileybury. The Vultures have only had the same result two weeks in a row on one occasion this year and were looking to reverse their 40-point loss to the Bloods in Round 4. The home side could only manage 2.5 in the first term and the Bloods fought back in the second, kicking five and taking a narrow half time lead. The Vultures wrestled the lead back in the third quarter, kicking four goals and taking a nine point advantage. They then kicked the first of the final term through Tom Redmond. Once again the Bloods showed they weren’t done, with Lachlan Treverton and Nathan Waite kicking goals to help their side take a one-point lead half way through the quarter. However, they’d spent all their petrol tickets and the Vultures finished with the four goals in the last seven minutes, thanks to Liam

The Beaumaris Sharks, without key forward Stephen Milne, have lost their first game of the Premier B season against the Monash Blues. They had more scoring shots but managed just three goals for the match as the Blues survived a late Shark attack to hold on by seven points. Keegan Mason had a great game for the Blues, while regular contributors Maddison Hardiman and Alfie Oppy also stood out. In a dirty day for the Sharks, Tom Dean, Lachlan Boyd and Josh Ward were the shining lights. The Sharks remain half a game clear on top of the ladder, while Monash find themselves in the top four on percentage, with Ajax, Parkdale and Fitzroy nipping at their heels.

AWAY TEAMS TO PLAY With Round 10 complete and all teams beginning to play each other for the second time, you would think we could be more confident about the outcomes of games. Yet, we saw the undefeated side of the competition fight back a three quarter time deficit to claim victory over 8th placed Old Camberwell and last weeks fifth place Kew beat third place Old Ivanhoe by 8 goals. Mazenod are continually being tested as they were pushed for four quarters by Old Camberwell in their tight contest at Central Reserve. At each break no one team had a lead bigger than two goals. Old Camberwell managed the biggest lead which was their three quarter time 12 point hand in front. But it was the Nodders last quarter where they managed to kick 4 goals and one behind to the Wellers one goal and one behind, giving the Nodders a six point victory. Thomas Kanz booted four majors which puts him equal first in the Premier C leading goal kicker with Oakleigh’s Aaron Cloke. James Howells was awarded best afield for the third time within the last four weeks. Williamstown CYMS put themselves two games clear of Oakleigh after their big win, positioning them equal fifth with Kew. The Cy’s held the Krushers goalless up until the half time whilst kicking ten goals and ten behinds. The Krushers managed nine goal to the Cy’s five in the second half, but their run was too little and too late as the Cy’s finished 40 points clear. In his third game for the season, Thomas Johnstone hit the scoreboard for the first time with three goals to go with his best on ground performance. The more games the Cy’s can get out of Johnstone, the stronger their chances are of playing finals, 6
as he appeared in the Cy’s best seven of his eleven games last season. Zachary Read was the highest scoring on the day with five of his sides 15. Caulfield bounced back from their lost to Old Ivanhoe the week before to belt Marcellin by 108 points. Marcellin needed to play at their absolute best to challenge Caulfield and unfortunately their innacurate goal kicking did not help their chances, kicking four goals and ten behinds for the day. Jeremiah Antypas did all he could kicking 3 of Marcellin’s four goals but it was the dominance of the Field’s enite outfit that proved too strong. The Fields looked set to prove a point to the competition that last week’s slip up to Old Ivanhoe was not the performance to judge them on. Louis O’Keefe now sits equal second in the league goal kicking after his bag of five. Young gun William Barker was in his sides best for the seventh time this season and nailed two goals on the day. Caulfield now remain one game clear in second position. Peninsula Pirates were back to their high scoring best with 43 scoring shots last Saturday against the accurate Ormond who kicked 12 goals and four behinds. Eight of Ormond’s goals come solely from Robert Chisolm who played his best game for the season. Peninsula have scored more points this season than ladder leaders Mazenod exemplifying their ability to attack, but have let through more than 130 more points defensively. Peninsula’s inaccurate kicking in front of goal reduced what could have been a devastating day for Ormond. 17 goals and 26 behinds to win by 52 points. Kew were prolific in their defeat over Old Ivanhoe. Old Ivanhoe are still without star midfielder Carl Groth and without his impact around stoppages, Kew midfielder’s capitalised. The Kew midfielders in Jack Del Bridge & Josh O’Bryan were too strong around stoppages whilst Ben Hurley continues to improve each week utilising his elite skills in the wet conditions. Kew forwards were hard to match up on with pocket rockets Zach Jones and Liam Kinsella combining for seven goals. Adrian Del Monte was crafty kicking two goals for Old Ivanhoe combining class with dare all day and is a nightmare for opponents to match up on with his turn of speed. Kew face off with the Pirates in what is a must win game for both teams to keep their finals chances alive.

MINISTERIAL SUPPORT Josh Frydenberg – Federal Member for Kooyong, and Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia – who is a huge VAFA fan and supporter of the mighty Hawthorn Amateurs, giving support on Saturday against
top-of-the-table side Glen Eira, with long-term VAFA trophy sponsor and supporter, Alistair Ewart, and HAFC committeeman and stalwart David Clancey.
HISTORIC EFFORT It could have been Kew v Old Ivanhoe 1976 not 2016 - when spectators rolled into Victoria Park, Kew last Saturday to enjoy the Prem C grade clash.
Whilst quite fatigued after the game Zeke said he enjoyed the challenge and learnt a lot in that continued concentration was called for and that all decisions were his and his alone.
Only one field umpire was in charge of the action. Ezekiel Ox was forced to umpire the game by himself when his partner got lost and never made it to the game.
To Zeke’s surprise there were a group of people waiting for Zeke to exit the arena to applaud and show their appreciation for his efforts.
There was some quick pre-match advice from Goal Umpire Ron Martin who field umpired in the 70’s & 80’s in the 1 umpire system, in introducing Zeke to “the diamond running” where a field umpire tends to run in a diamond fashion on the inside of play to allow them to view the action. PREMIER LEAGUE COACH? Many who ventured down to watch Ivanhoe in action on Saturday may have thought they were at the English Premier League. Spotted on the sideline was Ivanhoe Coach Paul Harris giving instructions…… in a suit. Dressed to
impress, Paul got his side over the line by 14 points in a high scoring thriller. It’s believed Paul was paying the price from a dice roll on Thursday night.
UMPIRES ARE HUMANS TOO FIGHT AGAINST MND A blunt statement yet one to remember in the VAFA community. Whitefriars have reinforced this message with a sign on the front gate of the college seen by everyone before entering. Young Todd Malt who is the youngest of the Malt brothers to enter the playing field has taken up umpiring on his off days. Todd is not the only student involved with umpiring at the Club. Currently, as in previous years, there are many boys who run boundary and if any students would like to get involved (and be paid $25) they should email Mr Peter Ciardulli or Mr Jeremy Freeman for more information.
Last Saturday, De La Salle hosted Old Trinty at Waverly Oval. On the day, De La Salle conducted a lunch in an attempt to raise money for the MND cause. Old Trinity supported the function on the day and together both raised a combined $5,000 which was donated directly to the cause. It’s great to see both clubs supporting each other off the field for a great cause.

Congratulations from everyone at the Old Mentonians Football Club to Anthony 'Chicken' Palmer who this week plays his 250th game for the Panthers. Chicken has also had brief stints with Beaumaris (17 games) and De La Salle (33 games and two premierships), so today also marks his 300th V.A.F.A. game. Chicken was the 735th player to represent the club and is the now the ninth player to reach the 250 game milestone. Since joining the Panthers in 1998 Chicken has become one of the greats of the club. He has been regularly rewarded for his great contribution on field - the highlight being named Club Champion in 2001. His all around contribution was recognised when he was made a Life Member of the O.M.F.C. An exceptionally versatile player Chicken has been able to dominate for the Panthers in a variety of positions. His love of the game has contributed to his longevity, and, despite this being his 20th season, there are many more games left for Chicken to play in the gold, black and blue. Well done to one of the greats of the club.

Congratulations Sean Coote on a magnificent career of 250 games. Senior best & fairest winner in 2006, Premiership player in 2003 and 2010, VAFA under 23 representative in 2015 and a member of the VAFA Team of the Year three times -2006, 2009 and 2010. Sean has also won the Club’s Leadership award three times. What more can we say but well done.

MHSOBFC proudly congratulates Luke 'Stumpy' Campbell on 200 games. A veteran of the club, he is now one of he threw certainties in life: death, taxes, and Cambo crashing packs. An intelligent and skilful player, Luke is a player to admire and a teammate to inspire. Renowned for his courage and attack, Luke celebrated game 199 with 6 goals. A celebrated senior premiership player, Luke is now helping develop our next group of senior premiership players. His love for and committed to the High School is evident in the way he attacks the contest, and the way he encourages and teaches his younger teammates. Congratulations on game 200 Cambo.

Congratulations to Danny King on reaching 150 games this week. Danny came to NOBS from the under 19’s, quickly becoming a valuable teammate. He immediately became a mainstay at the club, with his attack on the ball on the field and his quick wit off the field lovable traits. He is a dual premiership player in the 2009 and 2010 2nds flags, providing just as much on the field as leading the charge off it. Danny has recently undergone a massive body transformation losing over 11kgs and has pushed himself into the firsts where he is now a mainstay. Tough as nails, with tatts to match, we hope to see Kingy running around the Gillon for many years to come.

Nick Loucaides came to the club from Cheltenham Panthers in 2008 whereupon in that year he played in an Under 19 premiership. He played his first senior game the following year and played in the Premier C premiership side in 2010. Nick has been a great clubman and has spent the last few years wearing the No.10 with distinction. Go Nicholas! Congratulations to “Scuba” Steven de Natris who this week plays his 100th game for Brunswick NOBSPC. Steven played his first game at the club in 2006 and has always been a valuable contributor for the Club XVIII side.

Congratulations to Nik Blyth of Swinburne - It all started back in 2008 when “Dimples” moved down from the country to study his university degree he decided to pull on the razorback guernsey. He then walked straight into the team in reserves only winning 1 game for the season then he was in and out on the seniors from '09 and '10 then he became the reserves captain for the next 2 years raising the premiership cup in 2012 while only managing 9 games with a severe tendon injury in his finger. He then assistant coached the reserves in 2013 due to injury he sustained year before. He is a gutsy, fit & hard working midfielder who always puts the team first.

Congratulations to St. Marys Salesian's JAKE EVANS - a very talented player from junior days with strong family connections to the Club, Jake was a member of the 2014 Reserves premiership team. He is a utility player able to perform well in defence, as a midfielder, or in an attacking role up forward. Jake is a leader and well respected by his teammates.

Today James Paul plays his 100th game for Old Haileyburians. Since joining the club in 2010, James' quick mind, hands and feet have seen him frequently stream down the wings and flanks. His propensity to bounce, run and carry make him and extremely dangerous player who breaks the lines and sets up many scoring opportunities. A key member of the Bloods' 2015 premiership team, James marked the Grand Final with a typical dash and goal at a vital time just before the main break. Well done James, you're doing that famous number two jumper proud!

Well done to Tom Goodrich on reaching the 100 game milestone for the Old Mentonians. Tom has been a great contributor to the club's cause since joining the Panthers in 2009, both on and off the field. Congratulations Tom and we look forward to many more games.

All at Kew congratulate CHF Tim Allman on playing his 100th game today against Peninsula Old Boys. RAIDERS END THEIR BLUES There was movement at both ends of the scale following round 10 as St Mary’s Salesian shot up to top spot of Division 1, while Old Paradians got the monkey off their back by defeating PrahranAssumption and sending them to the bottom of the table in the process. It was another horrific round for tipsters across the land as question marks still remain over a number of teams within the league. Old Mentonians landed a much-needed four points on the back of three consecutives losses. The Panthers led at every break, but it was far from a walk in the park, they only led by 10 points at the final break. OMs ran away to record a 23-point win at Gillon Oval. Billy Chapman was at his dominant best for the Panthers, while Brenton Schubert and Darcy Brown were their only multiple goal scorers. For NOBs Danny King was resilient and Michael O’Donoghue and James Bell were most prominent up forward with two majors each. NOBs are now precariously placed two points clear of the relegation zone with the lowest percentage in the competition. St Mary’s Salesian have notched up their most important win for the season with an emphatic performance against Old Geelong. The Saints held an 11-point lead at half time and extended that to 59 by the time the final siren sounded, holding the Ogs to just two second half majors. With coach Jess Sinclair off on holiday the Saints had a day to remember. It was the definition of a team effort from the Saints with Cam Butler being the catalyst from defence. Ben Andrews produced a sublime performance including a big pack mark and Darcy Grant was solid. For the Oggers there wasn’t much to scream and shout as they now fall back to sixth position after a costly loss. Jock Grimshaw fought hard to kick three goals and Jason Barry was good all day. Ivanhoe have pulled off the biggest comeback of the season as they turned a 38-point half time deficit into a miraculous and memorable 16
14-point win over PEGS. This could be the catalyst for a massive second half of the season for the Hoes who now only sit outside the top four on percentage. The Hoes were simply unstoppable in the second half, ramming home 13 majors to stun the helpless PEGS. Nathan Valkanis was dominant up forward with five and Keke Blackmore-Moore, Mitch Lovell and Lewis Minney all contributed three for the Hoes. Trent Skurrie was back to his best kicking a bag of five for PEGS, while Caleb Hislop was their standout. At long last Old Paradians have notched their first victory over Prahran-Assumption and had reason to celebrate on Saturday evening as they launched themselves out of bottom position. The Raiders defied their position on the ladder to produce a stunning performance that was made to be even more impressive considering the absence of star player Adam Pattison. The Two-Blues on the other hand were quite simply hapless and were left shattered after turning in such a poor performance in the clubs most decorated player of the last two decades, Adam Sleight’s 200th game. Prahran-Assumption simply lacked effort and this was reflected in their lowest score for the season of three goals and six behinds. The only real positives for the Two-Blues was the fierce attack on the ball from youngsters Alex Simpson and Joesph Slattery. The Boundy brothers combined for seven majors for the Raiders and Sean Miller was dynamic all day. A 10 goal haul from Therry Penola great Jarrod Bannister was the driving force for a percentage boosting victory over Whitefriars at Fawkner Reserve. The Lions were slow out of the blocks TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Old Geelong v Ivanhoe Therry Penola v Brunswick NOBSPC Old Mentonians v Prahran-Assumption PEGS v Old Paradians Whitefriars v St Mary’s Salesian

pain on the Two-Blues, PEGS will be too good at home for Raiders and St Mary’s will solidify their grip on top spot away against the Friars.
Round 11 looks as though it should be the easiest tipping round we have seen all season, but as has been the case all year… you have to expect the unexpected in Division 1. Old Geelong and Ivanhoe shapes as the clear match of the round. Old Geelong will be ropable after their disappointing round 10 performance, hence I am backing them to fight back and do the business at home in an extremely tight tussle. Therry should be too strong for NOBs, Old Mentonians will continue to inflict

BATTLE OF THE BULLANTS Round 10 saw St Johns remain undefeated barely, as MHSOB jumped into the top four and Preston won the battle of the Bullants. In the highest scoring match of the round, MHSOB held on to defeat Emmaus St Leos by five points at Bennettswood Sports Ground. Coming off the bye, MHSOB looked refreshed as the strength of a four goal to one first quarter gave them an 18-point lead at the first break. But this awoke the Animals as they would put on a seven goal to three quarter to take a three-point lead into the major break. The game opened up in the second half as both sides combined 10 goals in the third quarter as the Unicorns would open up an eight-point lead at three quarter time. The attacking power continued in the final quarter as Emmaus St Leos would win the final quarter with six goals to MSHOB five, but it was not enough for the Animals. Rex Gavan was best on ground for the Unicorns as Kane Smith and Dylan Hamilton-Ho added three goals each. Jonathan O’Connor was the Animals best, with Christopher Beluszar the major goal kicker with four goals. At Thomas Carroll Reserve, Yarra Valley OB would come the closest this season to ending St Johns OC undefeated streak but would fall four points short. It didn’t look likely from the start as St Johns OC held Yarra Valley OB to two behinds as 2.5 from the JOC’s would give them a 15-point quarter time lead. The Bushrangers would reduce the margin to 10 points at the major break as inaccuracy in the first half for St Johns the only thing keeping the margin down. This would continue in the third for St Johns but this time adding 4.5 to the Bushrangers 2.1 to push the margin out to a secure looking 24 points at the final change. Two goals straight for the JOCs would turn out to be enough 18
despite a dangerous five goal quarter for Yarra Valley. Aaron Thornton, Matthew Nicholson and Daniel Abou-Karroum kicked two each for St Johns with Guy Choul being best afield. James Fleming was the Bushrangers best, with three goals apiece for Jack Hall and Ross Little. In the second battle of the Bullants for the season would again see Preston Bullants defeat Bulleen/Templestowe, this time by 63 points at Ted Ajani Reserve. Preston would jump out to a strong 24-point lead on the back of five goals to one, as neither side would kick a minor score in the first quarter. Six goals more for Preston in the second to two from Bulleen/Templestowe pushed the margin out to an even 50 at half time. Bulleen/Templestowe would continue to fight as they won the third quarter but could only reduce the margin to 48 points despite four goals to three in their favour. With the game as good as done in the last quarter, Preston would regain dominance to run out with the 63-point victory. Liam Carter and Damon Marcon combined for 10 goals for Preston and with Carter being their best afield. Billy Wilson was Bulleen/Templestowe’s best as Oran Aziz kicked three. At Ransford Oval, Eltham Collegians couldn’t continue their winning ways as West Brunswick kept touch with St Johns at the top of the table, defeating the Turtles by 56 points. The Magpies would start strongest with 5.4 to the Turtles 1.3 to lead by 25 points at quarter time. The spoils would be shared in the second quarter as each side kicked goals with Eltham Collegians reducing the margin to 24 points at half time. Another fairly even quarter in the third would keep the Turtles within distance of an unlikely TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Eltham Collegians v Emmaus St Leos MHSOB v Richmond Central West Brunswick v Yarra Valley OB Preston Bullants v St Johns OC Bulleen/Templestowe v BYE

comeback as they margin was only increased by West Brunswick to 32 points. Eltham Collegians would get no closer as the Magpies put on six goals to three in the last to secure the victory. Joel Beer was West Brunswick’s best on ground, with Luke Buckler the major goal kicker with four goals. Ben Gill continued his amazing form with another three goals with Matthew Olaris the Turtles best. Round 11 sees Eltham Collegians return home to Eltham College to face the out of form Emmaus St Leos in the most intriguing of the non-top four matchups. SAINTS STUN THE HAWKS AND MOVE TO TOP OF LADDER It was the most anticipated game of the season so far and it didn’t disappoint as the two undefeated teams Hawthorn and Glen Eira faced off in round 10. The Vultures had a stirring last quarter comeback over the Swans. Canterbury rebounded, Parkside recorded their maiden victory in a five point thriller over Power House and La Trobe may be the form team of the division. Lets check out the games... UHS-VU AFC def. South Melbourne Districts It was a five goal barrage in the fourth quarter that saw the Vultures upset South Melbourne in an eight point thriller, 84-76, at Brens Oval. In a tightly contested game the Swans held a narrow two point lead heading into the final term but it was in the final term where UHS-VU won the game. Led by Charles Jackson in a best on ground performance, the Vultures returned to the winners’ list after two straight defeats. Jason Clifford was fantastic booting six goals for the Swans but it wasn’t enough to secure his team the win. Both teams are part of the battling pack tied on 20 points chasing the leaders at the top of the ladder. Canterbury Football Club def. Albert Park AFC Canterbury rediscovered the winning form during the bye week as they thumped the Falcons by 50 points, 116-66, at Canterbury Sportsground. In a dominant first half Canterbury booted 12 goals to take a commanding lead that they didn’t surrender for the rest of the game. Rohan Walmsley was the star kicking five goals for the Cobras in a man of the match performance. While Tyson Cattle was the best for Albert Park in the defeat. Canterbury recorded their first win since round 4, and have seemed to found their scoring fire-power that eluded them over the past few weeks. La Trobe University AFC def. Aquinas OC La Trobe continue their winning streak, now at six straight games, with an absolute demolishing of Aquinas, 113-7, holding the Bloods to a solitary goal. It was domination from the opening bounce as La Trobe kept Aquinas from scoring a goal in the first half while they peppered the scoreboard with 16 scoring shots. Mitchell Gleeson booted six goals in the thrashing and Jacob Christie was the best on the ground. With the victory, La Trobe emerge 20
with a three game cushion for the third place on the ladder and received a huge percentage boost in the process. Glen Eira AFC def. Hawthorn AFC In a top of the table clash between the two unbeaten teams, it was the visiting Glen Eira Saints that stunned the Hawthorn Hawks by 13 points, 102-89, at their home ground Rathmines Road Reserve. Put it down to nerves in an opening quarter where the Saints only recorded a single behind, while the Hawks ran out to a quick fire six-goal lead. However the Saints showcased their defence, the best in the division, containing Hawthorn to only two goals in the second while their forwards were able to boot seven majors and bring themselves right back into the contest. The third quarter was hotly contested as Hawthorn wrestled back the lead but a final quarter seven goal blitz by the Saints was enough to secure them the win and remain as the lone unbeaten team. Julius Waras Carstensen was the best on the reserve kicking six goals in the impressive victory. Jason Ince’s three goals were valiant in the defeat for the Hawks but they struggled to unleash their incredible scoring prowess against the tough Saints defenders. The game lived up to the expectations and can’t wait for the return rubber in round 18 where the result may have finals implications. Parkside Football Club def. Power House AFC It was a very nervous last quarter for the Red Devils but they held on to record their maiden victory of season 2016 as they defeated Power House by 5 points, 61-56, at Ross Gregory Oval. Parkside capitalised on a strong third quarter kicking three goals and holding Power House to only three behinds to take a 16-point lead into the final term. They recorded the win however the Red Devils can thank Power House’s inaccurate aim DIVISION 3 — TIPS IN BOLD Aquinas OC v Hawthorn UHS-VU v Albert Park La Trobe University v Power House South Melbourne Districts v Canterbury Glen Eira v Swinburne University Parkside v Elsternwick

in front of goal to allow them to record the win. Power House kicked two goals but also had five behinds, while Parkside could only score a single goal, that resulted in Power House letting the game slip through their fingers. It was a stirring win for Parkside who will now take this new found confidence into next round’s match-up with Elsternwick. Swinburne University AFC def. Elsternwick AFC Swinburne dominated every quarter to defeat the Wickers handily by 31 points, 96-65, at St James Park. In a complete team effort, the Razorbacks had 11 individual goal-kickers in their third victory in the past four weeks. Benjamin Lewis and Charles Carson were the stars for Swinburne with Thomas Kennedy and Richard Lugg each kicking two goals, while Andrew Oldfield was the best for Elsternwick in a tough day for the club. With the win, Swinburne remains in contention for a finals

PREVIEW Glen Eira will remain unbeaten as they should be too strong on the backlines to hold off Swinburne. Hawthorn will look to take out their frustration of losing their first game of the season against Aquinas. The Vultures and the Cobras will hope that winning feeling extends to a second straight week as they face off against Albert Park and South Melbourne respectively. While La Trobe will look to make it seven straight wins as they host a reeling Power House in what poses to be an exciting round 11.

MATCH OF THE ROUND WEEK Our “match of the round” week really showcased what Divvy 4 has to offer with 3 of the 4 matches being decided by under 4 goals. The Rams were not only stole the match but, also 3rd. Masala showed it was no fluke with another 100+ pt win. The Warrior camp survived a massive scare from the Doggies whilst, Manningham’s fast start was too much of a hurdle for the Bulls. To last week’s games:
MASALA DEF CHADSTONE Masala hosted Chadstone at WJ Turner reserve, ready and expecting the Synners to come out hard. The Tigers had other ideas as they started strong with a 5 goal to 1 first quarter, which had the Synners again on the back foot. The 2nd quarter saw clean movement from the backline, strong control by the midfield and a hard leading forward line. The Tigers went into the long break leading by 83 points. To Chaddy’s credit, they came out guns blaring in the 3rd and kicked 5 goals to 4. However the Tigers streamed away in the last with 5 goals to run out 113 pt victors. Congrats to Masala’s Wayne McMahon (2 goals & BOG) for reaching 50 games. Samuel Freeman led with 6 goals, Matt Decarne (4) and Scott Becker was strong in defence all day. For the Synners, Will “Nugget” Hutchinson had his best game for the club with 2 goals, Brett “Have you see my pic on the VAFA website?” Cooney, Dave Bennett and Daniel “Daffy” Cumming, were also amongst the best. MANNINGHAM DEF NORTH BRUNSWICK I was expecting a repeat performance and that’s what we got. After Manningham’s 6-1 opening term in Round 2 against the Bulls, they were determined to repeat this at home and it went to plan with a six-goal to one-point first quarter which really set up the day. From that point on, it was an uphill battle for the Bulls (again) but, despite winning the next 2 quarters they weren’t able to dent the lead past the 4 goal buffer. Manningham’s score of 67, is their 2nd lowest winning score for the year with their lowest (64) also being against the Bulls. For North Brunswick, only Paul Notaro could fire with 4 goals and Simon 22
Mair was the Bulls best. Camron Terpsinis was BOG for the Cobras whilst Anthony Raso (4 goals) and Chris Jolly (3) hammered the scoreboard.
MT. LILYDALE DEF ELEY PARK After a commanding result in Round 1, Eley Park were confidant of a similar outcome at Mt.Lilydale last Saturday. History didn’t repeat but, when the Rams have a past players day, they usually come away with a win. It was neck and neck in the first half but, come third 3rd (the premiership quarter), the Rams kicked home 5-4 to just the 3 points in a strangulating effort led by new recruit, BOG Stephen Donald with 7 majors. The Sharks appeared to be paying more attention to Max Hampton (3). By the 4th, the game was over as the Sharks were unable to reduce the margin past 21 points. Eley Park had players missing but, have no excuses for their output. Dave Viola led the Sharks with 3 goals and Trent Sigalas was their best. POINT COOK DEF BY WESTBOURNE The match of the round between Point Cook and the visiting Westbourne Warriors at Saltwater Reserve had it all. The Warriors started off the better side but inaccurate kicking kept Point Cook in the game. The 2nd half was fairly even both on the scoreboard and in the ground. In the end it was a battle of the fittest, with a healthier Westbourne were able to over the line by just the 9 points. BOG Paul Hudson, was the Warriors best. Ben Johnson (2 goals) and an unusually quiet Dale Collins (2), were the only multiple goal kickers for the victors. The gallant Doggies were led by Andrew Robinson (2) and William Dawson (4)
PREVIEW 3/4 tipping wasn’t ideal but, Mt. Lilydale’s victory TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Chadstone v Manningham Mt. Lilydale v Masala Westbourne v Box Hill North Eley Park v Point Cook

will be appreciated more come finals time. This week, there’ll be a lot of sides looking to perform better than their last outing. Some possible danger game out there. To this week’s games: Chadstone (9th) host 5th place Manningham at Jordan Reserve. Chadstone are expecting a number of players to be available for the Seniors this week as this has been their bug-bear all year. Manningham need to concentrate on percentage this week and put a dampener on the Synners, “Day at the Races” function Saturday night. Manningham
last time and pitted themselves well against the league leaders. But alas, this will be a large Warrior win. The match of the round honours again are with the visiting Point Cook (2nd) as they head over to Eley Park (4th) at “Shark Park”. Use of wind decided the match last time but, a smaller ground still won’t change the winner. Point Cook North Brunswick (6th) have the bye and a lot to work on considering their next match is a big one against Westbourne.
Masala (8th) are confidant and anything is possible as they over to Quarry Rd and Mt. Lilydale who are now sitting 3rd. Win lose or draw, they are not far away from overtaking BHN for 7th. Mt. Lilydale to win on their Family Day “Bocky” (7th) are struggling but, will have some air of confidence despite heading out to take on Westbourne (1st). BHN were missing key players

GRILL’D RISING STAR 2016 THEOPHILOS THOMPSON – CAULFIELD Theophilos first started playing at Caulfield this year and has landed a spot in the senior side. If we were to pick an AFL player who Theo plays like it would be Luke Hodge. Theo is a terrific contested possession player. He can play a role both in the midfield and down back and has the ability to control and create. Theo works very hard and always does the team things which makes him a great contributor for CGFC. His courage and will to win the contest are outstanding. Theo’s willingness to buy into all things Caulfield Grammarians and will run water, fill up the bottles and do anything which is asked of him or not even asked of him. He is very respectful of the club and its stakeholders and nothing is too much trouble. Theo was CGS School and Football captain in 2015. His Father (Murray) and Grandfather Lindsay both played with CGFC making him a 3rd generation CGFC player.

5 YEARS AGO – 2011 In Division 2, Aquinas were determined to clear themselves from the relegation area and took the first step by defeating South Melbourne Districts, thereby placing the Districts in danger of falling into the dreaded 9th or 10th position. Aquinas looked to be in trouble early, trailing by 4 goals at the first break, but had taken the lead by half time. With scoring tending to go with the aid of the breeze, The Districts regained the lead by three quarter time but Aquinas came home strongly to win 13.9 to 12.10. Best – J Jess, Flynn, Aloisio, Toomey, Rainey, McDonald (Aquinas) and Mahoney (3), Parish, Suitor, Hocking, Benson, Lane (Sth Melbourne Districts). In Division 3 Prahran Assumption, led by the goal scoring ability of the ‘twin towers’, Adam Sleight and Peter Cristoforo with 4 and 5 goals respectively, were far too strong for Albert Park and cruised to a 21.21 to 7.11 victory. Best – Donahoo, McIntyre, Dempsey, O’Hare, Furness, Adamson (Prahran Assumption) and Barker, Brick, Dallas, Hyams, Roberts, Snowden (Albert Park). In Division 4 Eley Park Sharks held on to their 4th position with a solid win against Manningham Cobras, 22.16 to 18.5. Best – Cresswell (3), Handford, Thomas, Israel 3, Bennett, Brown (Eley Park) and Rose, O’Regan, Trinchi, McPherson (8), Pentland, De Vercelli (Manningham). Trent Harkin joined a select group at Aquinas Old Collegians when he reached his 200th game. Trent started with the U19’s in 1998 and then moved into open age where he played the majority of his games in the senior team. Trent was a great clubman and always involved in social and fundraising events at the Club. Along the way Trent had received two prestigious ‘Captains Awards’. Umpires Corner announced the 450th game for Anthony Damen as a field ump. During his career Anthony had been in charge of both B and C Section grand finals and was still using his great experience in the lower sections. Always one to enjoy post match celebrations at each club, Anthony was looking to remain involved in the VAFAUA for some time to come.
10 YEARS AGO – 2006 In C Section the question being asked was who would be capable of stopping the undefeated St Bedes Mentone Tigers. Ormond and Monash Blues played an important game with both vying for a C Section top four position. Ormond’s 8 straight goals in the first quarter was a great start and they were 6 goals up at half time. The Blues made some headway in the third quarter but Ormond powered away again in the last term with 6 goals to 2; final score 21.8 to 14.10. Best – Russell (8), Keleher, Miller, Martin (3), McConvill, Cove 44
(Ormond) and Davidson, Gregory (4), Coe (3), Williams, Smith, Hickey (Monash). Peter Cahill and Tim Saunders were the field umpires. C Section senior coaches were Tim O’Shaughnessy (AJAX), Graham Burgen (Fitzroy Reds), Brett McIlwraith (Hampton Rovers), Andrew McGregor (Monash Blues), Tim Killworth (North Old Boys/St Pats), Paul O’Shannassy (Old Camberwell), Dale McCann (Old Paradians), David Matthews (Ormond), Tony Macgeorge (Parkdale Vultures) and Luke Beveridge (St Bedes Mentone Tigers). In D1 Section Yarra Valley Old Boys boosted their finals chances with a good win over Rupertswood, 19.9 to 12.6 and their 7 majors in the last quarter gave them the ascendancy. Best – Valoppi, Drew, Keem (5), Trend (3), Savage, Stone (Yarra Valley) and Spinner, Phillips, West, Foley, Bishop, Sweeney (Rupertswood). Nicholas Brown and Graham Templar were the field umpires. D1 Section senior coaches were Phiv Demetriou (Banyule), Steve Easton (Bulleen Templestowe), S Cook (Emmaus St Leos), Cam Matthews (Old Carey), Michael Lockman (Old Geelong), Peter Russo (Old Mentonians), Leigh Stafford (Prahran), Shane McLauchlan (Rupertswood), Garry Datson (Therry Penola) and Kevin Barnes (Yarra Valley Old Boys). Jarrod Carlson, a fine young player for Marcellin Old Collegians, was the Club Warehouse Rising Star Nomination after his best on ground performance against Old Melburnians. A talented all-round sportsman, Jarrod had also been selected in the VAFA’s Under 23 representative squad.
20 YEARS AGO – 1996 Despite Uni Blues’ shocking inaccuracy in front of goal against De La Sale, they had no problem in winning their match 9.26 to 5.7, in heavy conditions. The win consolidated Blues’ position in second place in A Section but still two games behind Collegians. Best – Furphy, McLachlan, Vandenburg, Cavalier, Polkinghorne, McIntyre (Uni Blues) and Mackintosh, Hodder, Crowe, Abrahams, Crowe, Lafferty (De La Salle). Ian McMullin played his 100th game for Old Melburnians having first played with OM’s in 1982 at a 17 year old and was a VAFA representative in that season. Old Trinity made short work of Old Ivanhoe in B Section, 19.11 to 8.13 and were undefeated after 11 rounds and with a two game buffer. Best – Kennedy, Seuling, Ramsden, Sutcliffe, Cumming, Dalrymple (Old Trinity) and Parker, Donaldson, Tully, Pappas, Stewart, Weddle (Old Ivanhoe). Old Paradians congratulated Simon Vincent on his 100th game. Simon was vice captain of his club and was renowned for his fierce determination and attack on the ball. Simon also had a Club Best and Fairest award (1995) and was enjoying another great season THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
in 1996. In C Section, Old Geelong jumped Whitefriars in the first quarter 7.4 to 1.2 and never looked like losing from there. The final score was 14.11 to 6.9 and the result meant OGS were a couple of games clear of relegation but the Friars were on the bottom with only one win. Best – Howells (5), Manton, Cook, Nevins, Peddie, Oliphant (OGS) and Harris, Coghlan, Begley, Johnson, Robinson, Bateman (Whitefriars). Whitefriars congratulated Matt Bateman on reaching his 100th game having progressed from the U19’s before developing into a regular senior player and with an excellent attitude to helping out off the field. It was also a century for Josh Hoppe at AJAX. After two years with the Under 19’s, Josh was holding down key positions in the seniors and was showing clear leadership qualities. Andrew Kalinski was way ahead in the C Section goalkicking stakes with 64, 21 goals ahead of his nearest rival.
30 YEARS AGO – 1986 It was a very open competition in A Section after the completion of 11 rounds. In this round the match of the day was between Bulleen Templestowe and Uni Blues. The Blues appeared to have the upper hand at half time leading 7.1 to 2.6. The Bullants were having trouble in front of goal and wasted more opportunities in the third quarter to be trailing 4.10 to 8.6. In a thrilling last term, the boys from outer east Melbourne played some great footy kicking 6.5 and won the thriller by 1 point. Best – Kazuro, Asdagi, Oldfield, Krygger, Smythe, Farley (BT) and S Macauley, N Macauley, Boal, Karanoshos, Angel, Polkinghorne (Blues). Collegians and Bulleen Templestowe were now equal on points at the top in A Section with 8 wins each, Collegians with a substantial percentage advantage (135 to 111). Ormond and De La Salle were next with 10 wins and waiting for their chance to pounce. The other contenders were North Old Boys and Uni Blues with 9 wins and far from being out of the race for a double chance. In B Section there was also an exciting 1 pointer with top team, Old Xaverians, being challenged by finals’ aspirants, Fawkner. As it turned out the Xavs led from start to finish but Fawkner snapped away at their heels for the whole game before the Xavs won 16.13 to 16.12. Best – S Curtain (7), Dalton, Ryan, Paul Curtain, Atkinson, Klvac (Old Xavs) and Mitchell, Hills, Middlemo, Young (5), G Busst, Buckley (Fawk). In E Section, Bulleen United kept their unblemished record with a solid win over their main challengers, State Bank, 17.9 to 10.16. Whilst Bulleen led all day they realized the Bankers were a team not to be underestimated. Best – B Wilson, Quarrell (4), Morley, Flew, Barrow, Hounahan (Bulleen) and Bear, Broderick, Bull, Carboon, Connelly, Goldsmith (State Bank). THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
F Section Senior Coaches were Tony Trimboli (ANZ Bank), Steve Nicholson (Commonwealth Bank), P Cormick (Doveton), Fred Cook (Footscray Tech Old Boys), Peter O’Donohue (Latrobe Uni), R Thompson (Old Essendon), Barry Funnell (St Andrews), John Sampson (St Leonard’s), Victor Zanin (Uni High School Old Boys) and Ray Keane (Whitefriars).
40 YEARS AGO – 1976 The multi talented Old Scotch captain, John Anderson, played his 150th game. John had been best first year player in 1968 followed by Club best and fairest wins in 1969, 1970, 1973 and 1974. These acknowledgments were an indication of his great value to his club. His skill level was such that John was equally at home in the centre, on the wing or at half forward and the Victorian selectors regularly honored John with State selection. In B Section, Marcellin Old Collegians were hot on the trail of ladder leaders, Caulfield Grammarians, as the Eagles controlled their game against Collegians to win 14.13 to 8.12. It had been a brilliant first quarter by Marcellin, 8.1 to 1.2 and at the final siren 14.13 to 8.12. Best – Price, P Cullinan (4), C Mahon, J Crimmins (3), P Gartner, Milaszewicz (Marcellin) and Roach, Wagstaff, Mason, Shinkfield, Lee, Nethersole (Collegians). The loss by Collegians resulted in Old Paradians replacing them in the top four.
50 YEARS AGO – 1966 No less than six top teams were defeated in this round. One instance was B Section when Ivanhoe at home kept the reins on Kew to run out winners 9.14 to 7.5. Best for Ivanhoe – McWhinnie, Whittaker, Sproule, Atkinson and S Patterson. For Kew – Stokes, Blay, Crowe, Wienert, Clay and Bennett were acknowledged. Old Brighton secured a place in the C Section top four when they defeated top team North Melbourne CBC Old Boys 10.14 to 7.13. Best – Mark Millis, James Agar, Peachey, Walker, Morris and Don Agar (Old Brighton) and Verek, L Carney, Drew, L Murray, B Sheehy and Elderfield (North CBC). Peter French’s Carnival Report from Adelaide covered the great win by Victoria over West Australia, 28.13 to 7.19. After WA began strongly and kicked the first goal of the match, The VAFA players took over completely. Best for Victoria were Meehan (4), Considine, Gleeson, O’Brien (9), Mehrten, Kingston.
60 YEARS AGO – 1956 Old Carey forced their way into fourth place in E Section after disposing of top team, Melburnian Blues, 10.5 to 4.7. Best – Dunshea, Harding, Yuille, Cleary, Bentick, Adamson and Lyall for Old Carey. Melburnians’ Blues could only recommend three good players – Koch, Webb and Seccull. 45

SCOTCH AND BERNIES PLAY OUT FINAL QUARTER THRILLER Scotch and St.Bernards played out the best game of the round at Walter Street on the weekend, with Scotch running out 4pt victors in the end. It was an impressive start from St.Bernards who quickly took an eight point lead into the first break, they looked sharper on the vast expanses of Walter street, and were able to move the ball quickly and get through Scotch’s defences. However, after the first break, Scotch began to click into gear, getting their running game going and putting three goals on the board to none. At the main break it was a 12pt lead to Scotch and they were hopeful of running away with the contest. The game had yet another twist though, with Bernies showing a fighting spirit and crawling their way back with two third term goals to go into the final break down by three points. Despite their gallant fight, the Snowdogs weren’t able to get over the talented Scotch side, in what was their most promising performance of the season thus far. Sykes and Beddoe were outstanding for the home side, with Diamandis and Petrone booting 2 each, giving Bernards some good goal kicking options. Will Stewart bagged 5 majors for Scotch, and was the match winner for the Cardinals, while Daggian and Hays had outstanding days. The Win keeps Scotch well entrenched in the top four and a chance to cause some damage in the finals. Bernies tried hard all day, but just couldn’t match the Cards intensity. Beaumaris and De La Salle met at Banskia Reserve and initially it looked like it was going to be all Beaumaris, they kicked 3 goals to 1 in the first and 3 goals to 2 in the second to go in with a 27pt lead at Half Time. Beaumaris were cruising, before De La started to put the foot on the gas in the second half getting the margin back to 24pts before eventually succumbing by only 19pts in a well fought game in Beaurmaris. The Sharks, heavily fancied for this year’s premiership, got the much needed win and remain second on the ladder, nipping at the heels of the Old Xaverians. Tedde, Henricks and Baruhas all kicked two goals each for the Sharks while Bruce and Cusack put in a great performance to get the team over the line. For De La, Burnell, Colak and Lvovskiy all toiled hard and were De La’s best players, but weren’t able to lift their team to a victory. De La Salle look destined to miss out on finals action, sitting 5th and two games behind Scotch, they will want to get a move on and show some form in the back half of the season to warrant a potential finals spot. St.Kevins had a whopping 100pt victory over Uni Blues Holmesglen UNDER 19 Section 2 Old Trinity v Old Melburnians Old Carey v Whitefriars Parkdale v Caulfield Grammarians Fitzroy v St Bedes/Mentone

at Crawford oval, but it could well have been more with the Skobs boys kicking 17.20 on the day. A 6 goal to 0 first term started the rot, and Skobs continued to apply the pressure with another 5 majors in the second term to go in with a 9 goal lead at the main break. Inacurrate kicking started to creep in on a cold and windy day in Carlton, but St.Kevins still managed to boot 17 goals and come away with a percentage boosting win against the hapless Uni Blues side, destined for division 2 next season. Outen and Bonacci both kicked 3 goals each while Di Natale, Mahoney and Barnett were stand outs for the St.Kevins boys. For Uni, Blair, Bell and Sheridan were the best of a bad bunch, and will hope to develop into players capable of senior action next season. Spirits may be a little bit low at University, but they just need to keep developing their better players and preparing them for senior action in coming years. The Old Xaverians continued on their winning ways with a 21 goal victory at the hands of Uni Blacks at Stradbroke park. The ladder leaders were never tested, and went about their business easily. 6 goals in the first, 6 in the second, 6 in the third, meant it was easy work for the Xavs, they eased off in the last, but still kicked 4 goals, to run out 130pt winners. Nick Pirrie had a day to remember kicking 5 goals, with Desmond (4) and Wallace (3) all getting on the scoreboard. The Xavs have plenty to choose from up forward, with reserves full forward Jack Rennex booting seven against Williamstown, he now leads the entire league with 49 goals this season, a feat not to be taken lightly. He will be knocking down the coaches door this week no doubt. Hamish Cullity put up one of his best performances of the year, while Berry and Tobin continue to be consistently good for the ruthless Xavs side. With no weaknesses in this side, and two very good coaches at the helm, it is hard to see who is going to stop this Xavs team, but funny things can happen in the finals, so we will have to wait and see. Moorfield and Pendelbury were Uni Black best, but the team as a whole struggled to get much ball, so it was hard to find a few of the best players on the day. Again, like Uni Blues, we hope that some of their very best players will be capable of playing senior footy in years to come.

Parkdale Vultures continued their stellar season on Saturday with a thumping 135-point victory over a hapless Whitefriars side. The Vultures returned from their week off in scintillating form - jumping the Friars with an intensity around the contest that their opposition simply couldn’t match. The premiership favourite’s kicking for goal was the most pleasing aspect of the victory, their 8.0 opening quarter a reward for superior effort all over the park. At the first change the match was effectively over. James Salouris was best afield and the star of the show, his dominant ten goal display putting an exclamation mark on a forward line that is fast establishing its reputation as one of the more potent setups in recent seasons. Andrew Silva chipped in for five majors, he and Salouris working beautifully off one another as both took their goal kicking tally to 31 for the season. Miller Bartholomew tried hard for Whitefriars, but there were too many passengers on the day for the home side as they now slip to 2-8 for the season. Caulfield Grammarians won a crucial matchup against Fitzroy on Saturday, putting a three game break between themselves in fourth position and Fitzroy in fifth. The 19-point victory was lead by Sam Dorevitch, who proved the match winner in a three goal, best afield display. The result will be disappointing for the Roys, who really had an opportunity to close the gap between the two sides. They were always in it, but never looked threatening enough to overpower Caulfield as the margin hovered around a four goal margin for much of the day. Other results: St Bedes/Mentone were too strong for Old Trinity. A wasteful Old Melburnians def. Old Carey.
U19 SEC. 3 Old Brighton defied the odds at home on Saturday to defeat a highly fancied Ormond side by 14 points. The match was an arm wrestle for most of the day, with goals few and far between in tough conditions. The final quarter belonged to Old Brighton, as they flexed their muscle in the midfield to completely outplay their opposition. 2016 is becoming a curious season for the victors, looking a completely different side over the past month than the one that started the season so poorly. Jordan Mace continued his rich vein of form with another best on ground performance for the Tonners. Williamstown and Mazenod played out a thriller at Fearon Reserve on Saturday, the ladder leaders falling in the dying stages after leading all day. It was easily the best victory for the Nodders this season, as they will look to use this as a base for a premiership tilt. They showed grit and determination all day to keep in touch with a classy Holmesglen UNDER 19 Section 4 UHS-VU v Old Haileybury Therry Penola v Monash Blues Peninsula v AJAX PEGS v Preston Bullants

Williamstown outfit, and eventually wore them down to claim the three-point win. Jakob Murdoch booted three crucial goals in the low scoring affair, as Simon Bonacci was the driving force all day for the victors. Williamstown will be disappointed by the result, as they missed gettable chances throughout the game which left the door ajar for Mazenod. They are still in a brilliant position, top of the table with a huge percentage. They are still premiership favourites, although that picture has been slightly blurred after this weekend’s result. Elsewhere around the section, Hampton Rovers got back on the winners list against Marcellin, as Collegians were far too good for Old Ivanhoe.
UNDER 19 SECTION 4 PEGS played an exciting brand of footy to beat UHS-VU last week, as both teams put up a competitive match, PEGS came out on top for the day with Max Tonna kicking himself five goals. As Monash Blues produced some good competitive football, it was no match for Peninsula as they have plenty of talent with Tory Taylor, Nicholas Holland and Louis Barbour all in slick form. AJAX young gun Benjamin Oakes kicking four goals to ensure AJAX didn’t go down without a fight, but as Old Haileybury came out strong from the start they led the game and took home the win. Therry Penola hosted Preston Bullants at their home ground it was a competitive match from the start. Both teams fighting hard for the win, the Bullants got themselves in front by half time but didn’t last long. Rory Macgregor scoring three goals helped Therry get over the line to score the win.
UNDER 19 SECTION 5 Pleasingly for Parkside, Cameron Pevitt, Isaac Romano and Luciano Logozzo were in good form last round helping take home the victory for their team against Old Paradians. La Trobe hosted Oakleigh at their home ground last weekend, La Trobe came out strong from the first bounce having Daniel Skaer scoring three goals to help get there win against Oakleigh. St Bedes/Mentone Tigers came out strong from the start leaving Aquinas no match for them. With Dane Heverin kicking six and Alexander Browne crashing packs St Bedes/Mentone Tigers were unstoppable. MHSOB took on Mazenod down at Melbourne High in what was a thrilling match between the two sides. Ashan Wijayakumara on fie kicking four goals helping MHSOB catch up to Mazenod and take home the win. As St Johns kept the pressure up all game it was no match for De La Salle who led the game all day. Nick O’Sullivan kicking 4 goals and both Jon Epifanidis and Harry Bowen kicking three aloud De La Salle to take home the win. DOMINIC NAPOLI
TRIVIA NIGHT
Congratulations to Goal Umpire Dom Napoli who, after 23 years with the VAFA, notches up his 500th this week. These 500 games include 8 representative appointments and 22 Grand Finals, with 5 in Premier/A Section, 6 in each of B and C, and the rest from D1 to D3 – he just needs a Division 4 Grand Final to complete the set!
This year’s Trivia Night is being held on Saturday July 30 at the UA rooms at Elsternwick Park. Quizmaster Tony Hales will once again be confounding us with his trivia (we’ve been assured there will be no ‘What’s Your Decision’ type questions), so get together some family and friends and come support us in the second of our two fundraisers for the year. It’s a fun, social night, with over 100 attending last year, and there’s some great prizes on offer.
Well done Dom, and we know there’s plenty more to come! While we’re on the Topic of Dom, one other thing comes to mind (other than getting caught in the Carey nets…), and that’s Trivia Night.
All are welcome – please sign up on the sheets available at training, or RSVP your table to vafaua@gmail.com.
POKER NIGHT Our annual fundraising poker night was held on the 4th of June, and despite some ordinary weather we had a great turnout. Thanks to all who attended, and especially to our guests – we raised just over $1000 on the night. Congratulations to Dan Tucceri for his victory, and a massive thanks to Anthony Damen (AD) for organising and running the night.
PRE-FINALS DINNER As the wet weather conditions set in, umpires start to fall over – which leads us to think of our favourite time of the year – Pre Finals Dinner. This year the dinner will be held on the 22nd of August, and once again will be in the Members Dining Room at the MCG. This is a COMPULSORY event for all members. VAFAUA members who are unable to attend MUST email their apology to Lionel Katz (dinner@vafaua. asn.au) prior to 5pm on Monday 25th of July, as your attendance is compulsory and assumed. Any Club Umpires, Reserves/Thirds umpires and Club 18 umpires are welcome to attend, and Past Umpires, Life Members and Clubs will be invited. Guests are most welcome. Please RSVP to dinner@ vafaua.asn.au, advising the name of any guests/ attendees.

EDITION 2, ROUND 11,2016 The vagaries of Melbourne weather coupled with the time schedule for matches had a marked effect on the outcome of several matches. With five rounds remaining it is mathematically possible for all teams to qualify for a semi final.
The “Magpies” in their second season are proving a valuable asset in their Club’s successful season.
REVIEW OF ROUND 10
SECTION 1 Old Xaverians return to the playing fields of their Alma Mater to play Melbourne High School Old Boys, who will find themselves in strange surroundings which will add to the Xaverian cause. I forecast a big win to the “Crocodiles”, which will extinguish any hope of the “Unicorns” featuring in the 2016 finals. Richmond Central should continue on their winning way by defeating South Mornington for whom wins have been scarce in 2016. Hawthorn should comfortably defeat Prahran/ Assumption whose cause has been weakened by the unavailability of players in their Reserve side. The smaller ground should suit the aging “Two Blue’s legs” after their running on Como Park. St Francis Xavier should consolidate their grip on fourth place by defeating Brunswick/North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s who for the second successive Saturday must make their “long march” to the South East.
SECTION 1 Hawthorn led throughout their game against Melbourne High School Old Boys and won by one hundred and six points. The depth of the “Spartan” forward line was again shown by the fact that eight players shared their nineteen goals. Prahran/ Assumption had two scoreless quarters against the Old Xaverians, who broke the shackles in the last quarter when they turned a sixteen point lead into one of fifty one points at the final siren. St Francis Xavier started slowly against Richmond Central and trailed by sixteen points at quarter time. Their fortunes changed over the second and third quarters as the “Beaconsfield Boys” held a six point lead at the last change. Richmond Central rallied and held their visitors scoreless while they built a twenty two point lead by game’s end. Reliable Robert Nolan kicked three goals for the “Cardinals” No scores were recorded between South Mornington and Brunswick NOBSPC. SECTION 2 Leaders, Old Geelong achieved a rarity in Australian Football, when they held Monash Gryphons scoreless and recorded a victory by one hundred and ninety six points. Ten players shared the twenty eight Old Geelong goals with Josh Archer kicking ten of them. Swinburne University defeated University High School/ V.U.T. by thirty one points to stake their claim to fourth place. Joseph Dell Olio proved a focal point in the Swinburne attack. Monash Blues proved no match for West Brunswick who led throughout and won by sixty two points. 58
PREVIEW OF ROUND 11
SECTION 2 Monash Blues have the opportunity to put their season back on track when they host Old Geelong on the Frearson Oval this morning. I expect the Blues to show better form but I cannot see them having the necessary depth of talent to defeat the competition leaders, who should continue on their winning way. Seasonal success for Swinburne University will depend on the outcome of today’s match against West Brunswick. The Ransford Oval has not been “a happy hunting ground” for visiting teams this season and this morning I cannot see the Swinburne students breaking through for victory over the “Magpies”, who are playing consistently good football. As strange as it may seem, the outcome of today’s THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
match between Monash Gryphons and University High School/ V.U.T. could well determine which team will finish in third place. Each of these teams has won two games and lost eight and yet they are vying for fourth place. The Gryphons, who hit rock bottom last week, will appreciate their home ground advantage. I am also aware of the difficulty the University High/ V.U.T. players have found in scoring, which if repeated must aid the Gryphons whom I select to win.
