Our family had a working relationship 40 years strong with William Buck. Their team really understood our business. Our biggest challenge in the last 5 years has been seeking finance as we executed our growth plans. Our advisors have been our greatest allies and outcomes have been significant – 30% increase in sales, financial stability and most importantly, peace of mind, which lets us sleep well at night. We now plan to double our turnover through a second redevelopment. So more fresh thinking will be in order. We know we’re in good hands. TIM RUGLESS Managing Director, Rugless Family Foodland

VAFA IRELAND BOUND With the 2017 VAFA Tour of Ireland almost upon us we thought it would be good to provide the readers insight into the history and highlights of the tours to date. Refer to a brief history of the Ireland and South African Tours later on in this edition of the Amateur Footballer (thanks Tony Amad). In brief, from October 1-18 a group of VAFA players and officials representing our competition will fly to Ireland to take on the best the Irish can throw at us from a community perspective, while at the same time take in some of the amazing sights of Ireland. Matches will be played against Bishoptown, Tuam Stars, the All Ireland squad (before they head to Australia to take on the AFL) and Donaghmore Ashbourne. The trip will conclude in London where the team will play AFL Europe. Apart from the playing side, the trip will provide the touring party the opportunity to visit and experience the Blarney Castle, Cliffs of Moher, Dublin, Cork and Galway nightlife and all along providing wonderful opportunities for the players and officials in that special VAFA way. At this stage, the playing group of 25 represent all VAFA senior sections. Dave Murray will coach the team with Luke Mahoney as his Assistant. The touring party will gain lifelong friendships and memories – congratulations and thank you to the clubs who have supported this important program, which offers a point of difference to the VAFA for players considering playing in our competition and for our clubs. To keep abreast of developments please refer to www.vafa.com.au

DOGS @ FINALS Now most of us enjoy our four-legged friends, have them at home and love their company and yes Spring is in the air when it’s a great time to get out

and take the dog for a walk, however VAFA Finals Are DOG FREE. It’s a shame to see four legged (and in one case a three legged one) tied up outside VAFA Finals venues recently, or hearing from upset volunteer gate staff or Duty Officers who have been abused over the VAFA’s rules pertaining to dogs at finals venues by people attending games. Our rules are clear, the risk of a dog (on or off a leash) making some people feel unsafe, or even worse attacking or attempting to do so is a risk we will not incur. We hire our finals venues, they are our venues to control what happens on the day and therefore if anything should go wrong it’s our responsibility, so please for the sake of all concerned (including Fido) – leave your dog at home.

THANK-YOU’S With all of our Division and U19 Grand Finals due to be completed this week it would be remiss of us not to thank the clubs who have hosted our finals and the loyal band of volunteer gate keepers, Duty Officers and Ground Managers for your efforts is helping us conduct what has been a disrupted and at times challenging finals series, due in part to a shortage of grounds and disruption to Sportscover Arena’s availability. Particularly John Robinson, Tim Sutcliffe, Peter Fisher, Norm Nugent, Tom Chard, Geoff Reilley, Sean Scully, Mick Overman, Richard Evans, Kylie da Fonte, as well as Sandringham FC, Box Hill FC, Casey Demons FC, Old Paradians, Oakleigh AFC, De La Salle OCFC, Collegians, MHSOB, St. Bedes Mentone Tigers AFC, Old Ivanhoe, Mazenod OCFC, Marcellin OCFC and PEGS. In closing well done to PEGS (Division 1), West Brunswick (Division 2), Powerhouse (Division 3) and Manningham Cobras (Division 4) who all won their respective Preliminary Finals last week and in doing so not only gained entry to the “big dance” this weekend but also promotion to the higher section for 2018 – just rewards for all concerned with all (4) clubs. Enjoy your weekend @ the footy and please leave your pooch at home!

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER

Nick Armistead

@NickArmistead

HISTORY FOR THE TAKING History is one solitary game away for St Kevin’s as they inched closer to securing their first-ever William Buck Premier flag with a 23-point win over University Blues at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday. After a disappointing 2016 season in the VAFA’s top section, SKOB embarked on a recruiting drive for the ages in a bid to break that A-Grade drought and, up until this point, it has certainly gone to plan. Recruits the ilk of Mitch Brown, Jay Schulz, Sam Critchley and Tom Jok each had an impact over the weekend. Their talent, alongside the internal improvement of Lachie Sullivan, Gerard Gleeson and Michael Di Natale, is a huge reason for SKOB’s dominance this year and the attention to detail of Shannon Grant in the senior coaching post cannot be underestimated. Leading by 14 points at three quarter time, Grant’s chargers ignited with six goals to four in the fourth on the back of an inspired performance from Steven Salopek. He would have had more than 40 possessions and 15 marks throughout the day, seemingly galivanting across the pristine Sandringham deck with the ball on a string. Tim Geappen continued his outstanding form as the number one key forward in the competition, kicking five goals for the Blues and taking his season tally to 49 from 17 games. Dale Hinkley produced his most impressive performance for the year, while Kieran Harper returned his first game since Round 15 and will be better for the run. The Lions will not go down without a fight this weekend after they came from 26 points down at the first break and overran De La Salle by 15 in a thrilling final on Sunday. Despite the even nature of the game, the social room end was 2

certainly the scoring end for most of the match, with 19 of the 28 goals kicked to that end. De La were phenomenal in the first term and brought a physicality worthy of finals football to take a five-goal to one lead at the first break. However, Shane Joyce made a point of visiting each individual group at the quarter time break, imploring his men to exceed the physical pressure of the De La Salleans and “sort it out”. They responded. Sam Hibbins led the charge through the midfield as he produced the singlegreatest individual finals performance I’ve seen in the VAFA; tackling, taking contested marks and racking up clearances at will. Will Tardif provided the x-factor up forward and kicked two high-pressure set shots in the second term on his way to a bag of five. After a dominant first quarter from Jason Tutt, Jake Trotter made a point of ensuring his influence was kept to a minimum for the remainder of the match via a successful tagging role. I’d argue niggling your opponent from 150m away from play is unnecessary but the result cannot be ignored. Tom Humphrey was inspirational in the first half when down back, while Sam Williams and young gun Liam Murphy fought valiantly all day. Which brings us to preliminary final weekend; arguably the greatest spectacle in football with two teams going head-to-head for that final spot in the ultimate event. The Blues will get their chance to go one further than 2016, while the Lions can return to the big dance after unsuccessfully playing off in the 2014 decider against Uni Blacks. Of interest is the midfield battle between the fleet-footed, highly-skilled Blues brigade and the sheer physicality and toughness of the Lions. While the Blues have a forward line capable of THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

overpowering any defence with Harper, Geappen and Tom Quinn, the Lions have a big-bodied midfield with Hibbins, Courtney Hylton and Viv Michie so they need to use this to their advantage and physically get after the Blues in the same vein as De La last weekend. Of course, it is easier said than done. The Blues midfield of Ross Young, Ryan Eade, Jeremy Mugavin and Marshall Rippon is all class and physical in their own right.

SNOWDOGS STILL IN THE HUNT AS TONNERS BOOK GF BERTH With the first round of finals for premier B done and dusted, Old Brighton saw themselves locking in a William Buck berth next season for the first time since 2014 after winning a fiery encounter with second-placed Old Scotch. An intense game the next day saw St Bernard’s keep their seasons hopes alive after defeating a brave Monash Blues outfit by just 13 points. The game saw several lead changes in a tightly fought affair. Saturday saw a clash of the titans played out with minor premiers Old Brighton taking on second place Old Scotch on a sunny day at Box Hill City Oval. The game shaped up to be a great contest, with the only draw of the season coming from the two teams back in Round 8. The second time they met, Old Brighton had walked away as 20-point victors. Finals football is always a game of tempo, and Old Brighton came out of the blocks firing, kicking four goals to none in a frenzied opening term. The challenge had been laid out to the Cardinals, who responded with an impressive (but wasteful) second term, slotting 2.3 to the Grammarians 1.2 to go into the half trailing by 17 points. A dominant third quarter display saw the Grammarians stretch their lead out to 35 points after kicking 3 goals and once again keeping Old Scotch goalless for a quarter. A huge effort was required from Old Scotch in the final term, and whilst they managed to put through five majors of their own, 3.1 to the Grammarians sealed the game and put Old Brighton into the grand final, and secured next year’s berth in William Buck as they came away with a 23-point win. Daniel Anthony starred for the Grammarians, booting two goals in a best on ground performance. Anthony Zimmerman was also strong and kicked two of his own, whilst Michael Karayannis was kept 4

uncharacteristically quiet up forward. Josh Halsall booted three of his own for the Cardinals, whilst Jon Aujard was named best on for the losing team. The Cardinals will be disappointed with squandered chances when they oversaw play (especially in the second term), they can also be assured that they have what it takes to match It with the Grammarians in finals football. They must regroup and focus on a determined opponent in next weeks do or die final if they want to have another shot at 2017 glory. For the Grammarians, they must successfully navigate their week off and bring the intensity they displayed in this game to the grand final in two weeks’ time. Not much separated third and fourth on the Premier B ladder, with one win a piece the result of two clashes this season between St Bernard’s and the Monash Blues. It was the Snow Dogs who took the upper hand early, with a four-goal-to-one first term leaving them with a handy 18-point lead at quarter time. The Blues fought their way back into a high scoring affair in the second term, with a six-goal-totwo effort handing them a two-point lead at the main change. The third term saw the game develop into a contested arm-wrestle, with neither team being able to find any serious scoreboard ascendancy. The Snow Dogs were accurate in front of the big sticks, slotting three goals straight to the Blues one goal and three behinds to take a seven-point lead into the final term. Both teams had everything to play for in this term, with seasons on the line, but it was the Snow Dogs who came out on top. A sturdy 3.4 to the Blues 2.4 saw them into a second do or die elimination final against Old Scotch with a 13-point win. Jack McNamara spearheaded the THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

and would have hoped for better this year. For the Snow Dogs, attention turns to Old Scotch next week, who they have not been able to defeat this year, although they did get within three points in Round 7.

Heartbreak strikes twice for the Blues, who were eliminated in the first round of finals after finishing fourth at the end of the 2016 season,

RAGING BLOODS BOOK GF SPOT, EAGLES CONTINUE FLIGHT On Saturday, Old Haileybury served up a nice warm dish of humble pie to yours truly after they turned their recent form around to secure a comfortable 25-point victory over minor premiers, Caulfield Grammarians. The ‘Fields had a few chances early as Premier C leading goalkicker, Declan Reilly, was holding his marks and leading up well but failed to convert on the opportunities. It wasn’t just Reilly who was feeling the pinch of finals footy and the first quarter was played on scrappy terms, neither team managing any clean possessions. Most of the play, however, was in favour of Old Haileybury as they often got first hands on the ball. The Bloods tackling pressure allowed Caulfield no space, while their hard work on the inside translated to the outside and fed players like James Paul who was elite out of the back line, racking up possessions at will. In true finals fashion, however, despite Old Haileybury’s ascendancy around the ground, the game was played mostly between the arcs and the pill was hot! It took until the 18th minute mark of the first term before the opening goal was scored - thanks to an opportunistic kick out of the air from Corey Connelly. For Caulfield, their first goal didn’t come until after the quarter time siren! The margin at the first break was seven points in favour of the Bloods. Play opened up a little bit more in the second term and Caulfield started to wrestle back the momentum. Again, however, they failed to take their opportunities when presented to them and Old Haileybury’s pressure made it hard for the Fields to get any easy possessions. James Paul continued his dominance with his run out of defence. Both teams managed three goals in the second term, with a few points extending Old Haileybury’s lead out to nine heading into the main break. Given their impressive season, finishing as minor premiers and having dropped just two games for the season, there was an air of inevitability that Caulfield would eventually claw their way back on top of Old Haileybury; A feeling that something had to give and the Bloods’ pressure would recede. To their credit, however, Old Haileybury 6

were unforgiving and came out ferociously in the third. Caulfield were not given an inch at any of the stopagges, and every time they attacked, the Bloods would simply clear it back out with ease. The first goal of the third term came courtesy of the clean and crafty skills of John Nicolopoulos who controlled a half-volley at pace shrugged off one tackle and turned onto his right boot to finish from outside 50. The silky goal gave his team the momentum in the opening moments of the all important premiership quarter. From there, the Bloods never looked back and managed to maintain Caulfield to just three goals for the rest of the game as they bagged five more of their own. Perhaps the most impressive stat to come from the game was that Old Haileybury were able to hold the offensive powerhouse of Caulfield to just 50 points for the whole match - that’s their lowest score for the season and more than 56 points fewer than their average home and away score. Worrying signs for Caulfield, especially given Premier C’s recent history with the loser of the second semi final bundling out in straight sets the past four years. Will Caulfield follow suit and make it the fifth year straight and their second on the trot? With the strong form of Marcellin there’s a definite danger that this could happen and I hope for their sake it doesn’t. On Sunday, out at Elsternwick Park, Marcellin carried over their fine end of season form into finals and made light work of Williamstown CYMS, defeating the CYs by 47 points. Williamstown CYMS had worked hard to claim fourth spot and the onesided outcome does beg the question whether the CYs exhausting bid to secure a finals berth impacted their performance on the big stage? In saying that, we don’t want to take anything away from the Eagles who were dominant for most of the day after a shaky first five minutes. The CYs let a couple of early chances go begging before Marcellin’s Robert Constanzo kicked the opener on the back of some fancy footwork in the goal square. Constanzo’s goal seemed to settle the Eagles’ and by the time the first change had come around, the Eagles were leading by 31 points. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

Their run off the half back flank was what broke the game wide open in the first quarter and every time the CYs attacked it would come back out far too easily. Play on at all costs seemed to be the theme of the day for Marcellin, particularly out of the back line, and their ability to get the ball moving forward fast caught the CYs flat-footed on many occasions, carving them apart on the rebound. Despite a small third quarter resurgence from the CYs, Marcellin kicked ten goals to seven over the final three quarters to win by the eventual margin of 47 points. James Robertson, Andrew Kay and Jeremiah Antypas each kicked three goals for the Eagles with Robertson named best afield. Jack Connolly was the best player for the CYs, kicking three of his team’s eight goals. With the win, Marcellin ridded themselves of some seriously bad finals juju, breaking their seven-game losing streak in finals which stretches all the way back to 2011. They’ll now face off against Caulfield Grammarians in this weekend’s preliminary final.

be entering this game with all the momentum (not to mention history on their side). Caulfield were never able to get going in their loss to Old Haileybury and will need to get their groove back early if they’re to win. Despite being an attacking powerhouse, Caulfield’s forwards will need to play defensively-minded football to help stem the Eagles run out of the back line. The first five to ten minutes of this game will prove to be huge - can Marcellin start strong and get their run going or will Caulfield bring the pressure early to get on top and run away with it? Last time these two teams met, Caulfield inflicted Marcellin with their only loss from Round 10 onwards, defeating the Eagles 119 - 63. This time around, I’m predicting the margin to be much closer. As much as I don’t want to see Caulfield go out in straight sets for the second year in a row, Marcellin were very impressive in their first final against the CYs and I’m tipping the underdogs to win by a couple of points in a nail-biter. FORMER BERNIES BOY NAMED IN VFL TEAM OF THE YEAR Former St Bernards champion, Alex Boyse, recently had his name etched in VFL history as he was selected as part of the 2017 VFL Team of the Year - the All Australian equivalent of the VFL. Standing at 190cm tall and weighing in at 85kg, Alex has been selected to line up at centre half forward for the team after an impressive year that has shaped him as one of the VFL’s top draft prospects. It’s been a strong few years for Boyse who was a key part of St Bernards William Buck Premier flag in 2015 and has since graduated from the VAFA to push for a spot on an AFL club’s list. Great work, Alex.

WINNING EDGE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - ST KEVINS Congratulations to St Kevin’s Old Boys who have taken out the winning edge club championship after a hugely successful year for the club. Not only were they one of only five teams to have two women’s teams in the inaugural year of VAFA women’s footy, but both team’s also featured in their respective grand finals. Additionally, their senior’s team, thirds team and under 19 reserves team recently won through to their respective grand finals while their reserves and thirds are still playing deep in September fighting for a spot in the big dance. Congratulations on taking out the 2017 Winning Edge Club Championship.

The full list is in and 14 VAFA Wilson Women’s players will receive the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of AFLW recruiters as part of AFL Victoria’s Female Young Guns match at Coburg City Oval next Saturday. Morgan McGregor (Old Brighton), India Tait (Old Brighton), Mietta McDonald (Old Haileybury), Grace Buchan (Caulfield Grammarians), Christine Nancarrow (Collegians), Tash Rappos (St Mary’s Salesian) and Annabel Nichols (Old Carey), Irena Malliaris (Caulfield Grammarians), Matilda Hubbard (Old Carey), Riley Christgoergl (Old Xaverians), Emily Archer (Old Xaverians), Eliza Straford (SKOB Saints), Sarah Kerr (Ivanhoe) and Kate Dempsey (SBMT) will join a host of VFL players who were unable to secure a finals berth for the showcase event. McDonald, Buchan and Rappos were three key cogs of the victorious inaugural women’s Big V side who defeated AFL Goldfields in July. Rappos’ elite run and carry off the half back line continued post-regular season as she was awarded the BOG medallion for her starring role in the Saints’ thrilling one-point Development Division 1 Grand Final win over West Brunswick. McDonald was a standout during the Big V’s 49-point win in Ballarat with the elusive left-footer kicking two goals at critical stages of the match; including, a sensational left-foot snap which broke the game open and swung the momentum in the Big V’s favour during the second term. At club level, McDonald was named in the best 10 times and registered 14 majors for the Hearts. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

Buchan’s endurance and elite skillset were highlights for both the Big V and Caulfield throughout the year, culminating in her claiming the club Best & Fairest Award ahead of fellow midfield star, Irena Malliaris. She polled 10 votes in the William Buck Premier count for a top eight finish and was named in the Fields’ best in all but one game. Nancarrow was at the forefront of the Lions’ finals run before they fell to Old Carey by just one point in the Development Division 2 preliminary final. A tough inside midfielder and elite tackler, Nancarrow was named in the Lions’ best 10 times from their 11 matches. Nichols, who was a part of the Panthers’ unit who knocked off the Lions, is the daughter of former Melbourne FC player and Old Melburnians premiership captain, Jeremy. As such, Nichols possesses an unmatched football IQ, has an innate ability to read the play and offers outstanding outside run for the Panthers. McGregor and Tait consistently led from the front for Old Brighton as the pair finished equal-third alongside Rappos in the Development Division 1 vote count with 11 each. They polled the full three votes in five games between them and Tait was shortlisted for the Anytime Fitness Rising Star Award despite playing just seven games for the season. The Female Young Guns match kicks off at 12pm next Saturday at Coburg City Oval and will also act as a curtain raiser to the VFL Women’s preliminary final. 11

ANTHONY KIRWAN joined St Kevins in 2011, after a successful football career at St Kevin’s College where he was a member of the 2010 First XVIII team. He went on to play a number of senior and reserve games but this year he has become a valuable member of the Premier Thirds Gold side, with the hope of adding a Premiership to his SKOB career. Well done Anthon

Congratulations to PETER SUMMERS on reaching the 100 Game milestone with University Blues. Following a stellar junior career which saw Pete rookie drafted to Essendon in 2004. he made his way to Sandringham VFL where he was the Captain and a Best and Fairest winner in 2007. Pete left Sandy for Eastern League powerhouse, Balwyn, before joining the Blues in 2012. Pete has been an inspiring leader to our younger group of players leading the way on preparation and also those “little things” during training and matches that are needed to play the best football possible. Pete has been a consistent vote catcher in our best and fairest taking the award in 2012 and 2014 and been a top 3 finisher on 2 other occasions. We congratulate Pete on a great achievement and a great career and hopefully son, Max will following in his father’s footsteps in years to come. PEGS TO FACE SAINTS IN DIV 1 GRAND FINAL The second week of Division 1 finals had something about it a certain feeling. that, combined with the fact the AFL was back on after the controversial bye round before finals and the general vibe was unlike anything else. The aura surrounding the Ormond v PEGS game had this feel and threatened to be special. Ormond were carrying incredible form to finish the minor rounds and put up a brave fight against SMS last week, despite destiny working against them. PEGS decimated Oakleigh last week and rolled in brimming with confidence. The Ormond supporters came out in droves and took up their usual spot behind their goals making defensive life all the more difficult. The siren went to signal the start and things were kicked off through a decisive Robert Baddeley hit out (which turned out to be a theme of the first half). PEGS broke through first but the majority of this quarter was played between the arcs. PEGS had more of the play but Jeremy Simon was a standout in defense keeping Adrian Romanyk down despite PEGS targeting his hot boot. As the siren sounded PEGS led by nine. But for some resounding defensive efforts from Andrew Khallouf and James Lenhart, this was a completely even contest. The second quarter started off similarly. PEGS had the run of the green but Ormond were holding the fort. Romanyk was a continual threat up forward and could have had a bag already if not for some wayward kicking. Despite the continued dominance of PEGS big man, Robert Baddeley, it was Ormond defensive utility, Hamish Ramsay, that turned the game and inspired the Monders by thwarting countless Bomber attacks. His teammates, Ethan Hanley and Tom Buckley jumped on board the Monder train and ran freely through the middle, playing a huge part in Ormond kicking three goals in four minutes and getting themselves right back in the game. In stepped PEGS speedster Cam LIvori. Livori got the Bombers back on track and they kicked the final two goals of the quarter to quash the Ormond challenge. Despite Ormond dominating most of the quarter, the late goals saw PEGS head into the main break up by 12. 16

After half time, it was again Livori that got PEGS going. A sensational one handed pick up at speed and miraculous goal from the pocket had PEGS running on top of the ground. The Bombers were peppering the Ormond goal and the back six of the Monders, despite their best efforts, showed signs of exhaustion. Despite the dominance of Ethan Hanley, Ormond could not penetrate the PEGS defence who repeatedly gobbled up the long Ormond kicks down the line. Tylar Vujanic was flying at everything and proving to be an unstoppable aerial presence. This time it was PEGS who let Ormond back in the game. Despite the PEGS early dominance, two goals in a row gave the Monders a sniff. Matt Martinov moved into the ruck, combated the dominance of Baddeley and played a big part in the resurgence. However, a late goal from PEGS half-back, Brett Hannah, held Ormond at bay. At three quarter time PEGS led by 16. The biggest quarter of the year for both sides started off with an Ormond goal through Sam Mason, reducing the lead to nine. That was as close as they would get, though. Through the sustained work of Vujanic and Khallouf as well as the constant forward threat of Romanyk, the Ormond dam was breached. Four goals in a row to PEGS ballooned the lead out to 34-points and put the result beyond doubt. PEGS eventually stormed into the Grand Final by 27-points. Despite solid defensive contributions from Jeremy Simon and Hamish Ramsay, Adrian Romanyk booted five majors (from about 12 shots). Baddeley was named PEGS best for his dominant ruck work link up work while Tylar Vujanic’s tireless aerial efforts were acknowledged. For Ormond, they are stuck in Division 1 for another year and will be bitterly disappointed to not have won a final. Ethan Hanley had the ball on a string for much of the game and should be happy with his performance, Jeremy Simon did a great job on Romanyk until he went down in the third quarter and Boyd Upstill held Trent Skurrie to one goal. SPORTS INJURYwww.vafa.com.au CASUALTY - OPEN 1-7 SATURDAY

Please email your match reports, thoughts and feelings by Sunday afternoon to brin.duggan@gmail.com

The result sets up a huge encounter between minor premiers SMS and their kryptonite this year, PEGS. Of the three games the Saints lost this year, two of them came against PEGS. Undoubtedly, the Bomber defence has the Saints’ number. Defensive pillars, Andrew Khallouf and James Lenhart play well against Saints forward line and have contributed to reducing SMS to an average of 85 points against them, well below their season average of 107. That being said, in their Round 18 match-up, Dan Ryan and Manny Dolan combined for eight goals. SMS will also be drawing upon their defence in their hopes to win. In Round 18, Skurrie and Romanyk booted 10 of PEGS’s 15 goals as they got a hold of the Saints defence which was under a

FF: HF: C: HB: FB: Fol: I/C

huge amount of pressure from repeat forward 50 entries. If the back line is expected to hold up their end it will come down to midfield pressure from Tim Dudgeon and his support cast to give the defence a chance. Jos op’t Hoog will need to play a huge part if SMS are to win. He can dominate a wing or play a Mr. Fix-It role wherever he needs if PEGS get on top somewhere. This game will come down to the wire, both sides can hurt you on the scoreboard but have matchwinning defenders as well. Although, I think this will be decided by one of the four gun forwards Romanyk, Skurrie, Dolan or Ryan kicking five plus goals. Of those four, Romanyk has 14 in two weeks and looks the most likely, but I am backing in Manny Dolan to bring it home for the Saints. SMS by three points by way of a late Dolan goal.

DIVISION 3

WILL THE VULTURES SWOOP ON THE CUP OR SUCCUMB TO THE POWER OF THE HOUSE? After two teams dominated the competition for most of the season, it seems a fitting end to the year to have UHS-VU and Power House meet in this week’s Division 4 Grand Final.

lead the way for his side. Jaxon Cook (3) and Benjamin Johnson (2) did most of the damage for Westbourne in front of goal as they had the favourites quaking.

The minor premiers in Power House have been a story of consistency throughout the season, beating UHS to top spot at the end of the home and away season after UHS stumbled at the final hurdle. Who can blame them, though, as it was always going to be tough for UHS to maintain the frenetic pace they set early on in the season.

House coach, Anthony Voyage must have had some stern words to say to his chargers as they came out and overturned the 19-point deficit to a lead of 26 points as they shot 11 scoring shots. From then onwards, it looked like an unlikely task for Westbourne and the House kicked away in the final term to be eventual winners by 43 points, booking their ticket for the grand final with UHS next week.

Having said that, home and away season honours mean very little when it comes to finals, and when the two heavyweights of Division 3 meet in the Grand Final this week past results mean very little too. At this stage, the flag is still anyone’s. The route to the big dance was much easier for UHS who were able to book their spot in the grand final when they beat Power House comfortably in the second semi final. The result confirming that the minor premiership may not have meant a great deal; however, after the 44-point loss, the House had the double chance and were faced with Westbourne, a side capable of beating anyone on their day, exemplified by their Round 18 win over UHS. Only a goal separated the two sides at the quarter time break, as Power House had their guns firing through Team of the Year Recipient Nicholas Nagel in good form, eventually booting four goals for the day and Patrick Healey at his devastating best through the midfield, collecting best on ground honours in the process. As all good sides do, Westbourne Grammarians rallied and swung the momentum in their favour holding a 19-point advantage at half time as big man Chris Hudson stood up and 20

It’s going to be a tough game for both sides, each with a point to prove; Power House wanting to making amends for the disappointing second semi final loss, while UHS want to prove once and of all they’re the best there is in Division 3. With Sam Confait still out for Power House, it’s going to a tough battle for the midfield who will need to dig deep and win the contested ball in and under if they’re going to jump the Vultures. Nicholas Nagel will also need to fire and end the day with a big bag to get his team (and supporters) up and about early. For UHS, they’ll need to stick to their guns and trust the process they’ve followed all year is good enough to take them all the way. Their run off the half back line and strength through the midfield has never left their forwards demanding more supply - if it all clicks for UHS early and the House don’t bring Grand Final intensity, it could be blow out. Having said that, I have faith Power House will bounce back and take this game down to the wire falling just short of an upset. TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD UHS-VU v Powerhouse

FINALS WEEK 2 NORTH BRUNSWICK 8.10-58 DEF BY MANNINGHAM COBRAS 10.6-66 After a disappointing first week of finals, we’ve had our first close game - and an upset at that! There are now just two teams who remain in season 2017, and as we head into the Grand Final we are reminded of why we love footy and what we play for. The excitement and nerves and the smell of spring in the air … is there a better time for any footy fan? Flashback to earlier in the year and North Brunswick had a perfect start to the season going undefeated until meeting the Cobras in Round 13. Whatever the Cobras did then, it’s worked for them again as they dished out a disappointment to the Bulls’ fans, ending their year on a sour note - a straight sets exit from finals. The Cobras got out to an early lead, kicking three goals to one in the first quarter to lead North Brunswick by 12 points at the first change. Manningham put on another two goals to the Bulls’ one in the second term to push the margin out to 17 points at the main break. It was far from over, North Brunswick not wanting to let their brilliant season fall agonisingly short. They booted four goals to the Cobras’ three in the third quarter to bring the lead back to 13 points going into the final quarter.

Maghamez was damaging up forward yet again for the Cobras booting a bag of five. Nick Zappala was brilliant for the whole contest earning himself best on ground and Timothy Conn was great as well.

PREVIEW With the upset, this means Manningham move on to the grand final to face minor premiers and ominous favourites Aquinas. This is what it all comes down to and it has shaped up to be a great contest. Aquinas have been the powerhouse of the competition all year with a brilliant record and a staggering percentage; However, if there is one team that’s in for a good chance to knock them off for the flag it’s the inform, hard-working Cobras. Manningham have had a terrific year, finishing third on the ladder and knocking off both top teams throughout the year. It will definitely be a great game.

The fourth quarter will stick in the minds of the Bulls for a while, as they shot themselves in the foot with their inaccuracy. The Bulls managed to hold Manningham to two goals straight in the last but failed to capitalise on their seven opportunities, kicking 2.5 to go down by eight points in a heartbreaking loss. Ashley Rae and Peter Butler were the multiple goal kickers for North Brunswick finishing with three and two goals, respectively. Kane 22

PREMIER B THIRDS GRAND FINAL

After 18 rounds and two weeks of finals it has all come down to this. Two teams in each of the six grades will face off against each other for their respective premierships. each of these games could very well be decided very late in each game such is the evenness of this year’s under 19 footy. In closing, good luck to each team and I will be keenly looking to see if my prognostications for the day will be successful or I will be relegated to the naughty corner for making calls which the victor will ridicule.

UNDER 19 PREMIER In their most complete performance for season 2017 Beaumaris completely blew De La away with a powerful display of football which had some long term observers of VAFA footy shaking their heads at the quality of the footy on display. They were able to get their running game going and simultaneously block the run and carry of De La. With Cusack and Hennig ruling the air and being able to impose themselves over the De La defenders it allowed the Sharks to gain momentum and they completely eclipsed the De La side which was not disgraced by any means but they were just unable to sustain the effort for as long as the Beaumaris boys. For De La, it was a welcome return to finals and I’m sure the club would be happy to see some of these boys integrate into their seniors over the next couple of years. For Beaumaris, their date with destiny awaits them. GRAND FINAL Old Xaverians v Beaumaris The Box Hill ground will no doubt be in perfect condition and this will only serve to highlight just how good the footy is at this level. I have been very impressed with the top four this year and rather like most grades the standard only seems to

FB HB C HF FF Foll I/C

get higher each year. I will admit I had a sneaking suspicion that after six rounds it was a flag that was destined to travel to Shark park, and I was trying desperately to get a handle on what up to that part of the season had been a spasmodic Old Xavs and I just didn’t see them in the final game of the season. I realise that this will give Old Xaverian supporters a chuckle, but even they would have struggled to get a handle on their early season form. Then a change occurred Beaumaris were dropping games, had a stumble form wise they weren’t doing so early season, and the Xavs were starting to string results together and with some very strong late season performances they came home with a bang. For today, I am torn; I am aware of the importance of Soccio to the Xavs up forward along with Batten, Dalbosco and Ralph as the starting mids along with Hart, but they have been a side built upon a collective approach where the sum is greater than the parts. In comparison Beaumaris have Cusack, Hennig and Gibbins as tall forwards, Bruce, Edwards, Heath who are dynamic in the mids and are more than capable of playing up forward too. With Old Xavs winning the second semi it should point to a win for them as they were very impressive, whereas the Beauy coaches got lost in the hurly burly of the game and didn’t settle the game down or make the changes necessary, so what happens if Xavs jump them early? I think this is a game which will be decided by which Beaumaris team turns up. The one which overwhelmed De La or the one which was not allowed to be at its best and its players struggled to work through that two weeks ago. It is a game built around the collective effort of Old Xaverians versus the explosive match winners of Beaumaris. For me, with last years runners up result still stinging, I’m going to stick my neck out and no doubt be pilloried by those in red and black and say Beaumaris for mine.

U19 PRELIM FINAL REVIEWS & GRAND FINALS PREVIEW

HOLMESGLEN UNDER 19

UNDER 19 PREMIER RESERVE: DE LA SALLE V SKOB SKOB withstood a determined fightback from old Xaverians last week in the third quarter to cruise to a easy win and advance to the grand final where they meet near neighbour De La Salle in the early game at Trevor Barker. The collection plates may be a bit light this week as the families and friends make their way to the ground, but their will be no Christian charity in this match. SKOB with Bown and Pearce, who kicked eight last week, up forward will need to be closely monitored. They are getting plenty of it through the efforts of Andriske in the ruck generally giving the Skobbers first use along with Xais leading the way with his direction and precision kicking De La will need to be good. For the Dees, it is more about the collective spirit but with Manakis up forward they too have a target to aim for. They will need to get their smaller running players looking to share the load if they want to win. As I’m a parent in this one - I’m sitting this one out, as such no tip!

SECTION 2: Last week old Carey snuck home in another nailbiting game when they ran over the top of an unlucky St. Bedes Mentone tigers. The coach of Old Carey must have no hair after a one-point loss and a five-point win over the last two weeks, and the positive is it won’t grow back any quicker as they are now in a grand final. It’s sure to be a long day for him as he seeks the means of trying to overcome collegians in the grand final. For the Tigers, it is a bitter pill to swallow and they now look to feed some of these boys into their senior group, but their future is bright - they have a vibrant junior club and they also have a second unders team which will help to bring numbers through too.

GRAND FINAL: Collegians v Old Carey Collegians have enjoyed a terrific back half of the season in what has been a very competitive section with five teams over the course of the year harbouring premiership ambitions. And with Greene, Schwab, Scott and Van Driel having led the way they will again take some stopping if the Panthers wish to take the cup home with them as they make the trip to premier grade. For the Lions, they will need to look at Brusnahan, Chapman and Delacca who have all been prominent for them in 52

their rise to premier football. If the second semi was any indication then it all points to a terrific contest, but I just wonder if the exertions of last week in a tense, tight game may have taken a toll on the young Carey side? I know this may be irrelevant to many, but did the last quarter efforts to get over the line last week be their last gasp and that as such this may be a huge let down? It is with this in mind along with the 125th year of Collegians that has me leaning towards them in this match. I like omens and I think that collegians with their sense of history and the need to make their own history in this milestone year which will prove too strong and they will win.

SECTION 3: In what was probably their most disappointing performance this year and with so much in the line Marcellin capitulated against Old Haileybury. For the Bloods they were able to find way too many avenues to goal thus making a mockery of my concerns on their over-reliance on Seccull up forward. For the Eagles they have found a couple of players and with the timely move of Dennis into the mids late season this may see him push for senior selection. For the Bloods they will now make the jump into Section 2 and they have a realistic chance to go back to back after winning Section 4 handsomely last year. It could be argued that they may be a bit of a sleeping giant; after all they are a huge school with campuses spread all over Melbourne and as such they should be able to find a few players, so for them to be languishing over the years in lower grades was not where they should be or indeed want to be.

GRAND FINAL: Old Ivanhoe v Old Haileybury In a reply of the game 2 weeks ago this could be again one that will be decided by very small margins. Old Haileybury have been top or 2nd all year and as such despite my wild tip last week they should probably start as warm favourites here and it may come down to what influence the Old Ivanhoe coaching staff can have to curb the Old Haileybury prime movers. Can old Ivanhoe quell the influence of Seccull up forward if he plays? However, they cannot just look at that because last for the 1st time all season the Bloods had an even spread of goalkickers and posted a winning score. Can Old Ivanhoe cover the following players who have all been influential for the Bloods across the year: Paul, Thompson, Sharpe, Ward THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

and Constable? For the Bloods can they cover the ‘Hoers spread of goal kickers led by Nagel, Scuderi and Bradley? Can the Bloods stop Altis, Oliver and Coulter? Do the coaches then start to worry they are paying far too much respect to their opponents and not stressing their own sides strengths? I’m at a loss for this one and will no doubt get it wrong, so I’ll just take a stab at it .... Old Haileybury.

SECTION 4: PEGS blanketed the Monash Blues players in a very disciplined performance only conceding a single goal until 3/4 time by which time they could then cruise to the line and look to prepare for the game against Mazenod. Congratulations to PEGS who now move to Section 3 along with Mazenod for next year and in many ways the two best teams across the season have made it to the last game of the year. For the Blues they had a terrific spell of games from about round 9 and they gathered momentum and made a surging run to finals which came to end on the oddly shaped Waverley oval.

GRAND FINAL: Mazenod v PEGS I’m at a loss with this game. Mazenod have been consistent all year and despite just falling over the line against Monash Blues in the second semi I’m putting that down to nerves and that they will be better for that run. For PEGS, after I questioned their fitness early season they rebounded and then proceeded to make my concerns redundant. And this week, I think it will be Mazenod, but they will need to be at their very best. However, this particular PEGS team is one that can create history for their football club and that may prove a powerful force. I’m pretty sure that PEGS have never won a flag and as such that could prove a massive motivating force for them. For Mazenod they have been well served across the year by an even contribution from a number of players, so they have a togetherness where the sum is greater than the parts. Key players for the Nods are BrandOliver, Sherlock, Deegan, Minaj and Raffa but they merely lead the band because the backing they get across the group is strong. For the PEGS they have been well led all year by Saggio and Erougian as reliable goal kickers and Carlini, Tonna recently and Luisetto so there are plenty of players who can influence the game. I’m going with Mazenod because of their overall season, they have been top all season and today it won’t change. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

SECTION 5: I am firmly on the MHSOB bandwagon. I saw them last week and they were a much better team than Section 5! Where have these guys been hiding? They certainly gave De La right touch up. For De La when three of your best are deep defenders in Jarvis, Morganthaler and Day who gave all for the cause you just know it’s going to be a long afternoon. For the High this was a game they use as the template to take into the grand final. In the other game Old Camberwell did what they had to when they defeated an undermanned Hampton Rovers by a significant margin to advance to the last game of the season and into Section 4 next year. For the defeated sides it’s easy to look at negatives but both of them are second and in De La’s case a third team, so to make finals it is a significant achievement.

GRAND FINAL: Old Camberwell v MHSOB By virtue of their season old Camberwell should start favourites, but I’ve seen the opposition and they were very good, so the ‘Wellers will need to improve upon workmanlike and play some pretty explosive footy to defeat the Unicorns. For the ‘Wellers they will need their guns to fire and their mids to get first hands on the ball if they harbour premiership aspirations. If they can stop the flow of footy in the middle and put some pressure on the MHSOB defence and get enough footy to Powell, Dallas-Riva and Oliver they certainly have the firepower to kick a winning score. Conversely, they will need to get a grip on the pace, power and spread of the Unicorns mids and runners who cut De La to shreds. Lane with 6 last week was given way too much time, space and latitude by the De La defenders. McNamara, Philips and Tetaz all ran and spread hard from the middle and De La were just unable to cover that run and as such the amount of ball going into the forward line allowed them kick a big score. I am going to select MHSOB because I see them having way too much fire power across the ground and they looked a side with a mission last week. They could have eased up late in the last, but they were ruthless and really sent a message they want to win this years pennant. For the ‘Wellers, they weren’t as comprehensive in dispatching the younger Rovers team, and I’d like to think it may have been they did enough to get the job done, so I may be underestimating them and overstating the quality of MHSOB given the nature of last weeks win. 53

1 WEEK AGO - 2017 The finals is always a chance to run into people who are not only active at finals’ time but who have been true‘ammo’people for many years. There are also lots of ‘ammo’ families and I was reminded of this when I ran into Peter Fisher, Mazenod stalwart and one of those devotees who contributes wherever he can at amateur level. At finals’ time, Peter commits to being a Duty Officer for the VAFA (even if Mazenod aren’t playing) at any venue they nominate and it’s been my pleasure to often share the duties with Pete. I happen to know 4 of the 6 Fisher brothers and they present a remarkable record in the VAFA. Incredibly, and most unusually, they cover three of our traditional amateur clubs in terms of service and the following is a summary of some of what they have achieved: At Mazenod - (1) Peter, goal umpire for Mazenod since 1989, duty officer for the VAFA at finals for many years and often over two consecutive days. Peter’s two sons, Simon (300 games/5 premierships) and Justin (100 games/3 premierships). (2) Paul, after a stroke was time keeper for 4 years. At De La Salle - (3) Michael, played for 1 year and his two sons Matthew and Tim played at De La. (4) Adrian, former De La Club President, captained and coached the club’s clubbies (Warriors) to 4 premierships, played 202 games including one additional flag and was President of De La when they won four premierships on the one day! Adrian also umpired De La’s reserves for 3 seasons and was one of the great VAFA personalities. At Ormond - (5) Greg, played 239 games for 6 premierships as a player in the reserves and U19’s in addition to being a regular senior player. Committeeman for 33 years and still a passionate Ormond follower/contributor. Greg’s son, Stephen, played in the U19’s including 1 premiership. (6) Bernard, boundary umpire for Ormond for a number of years. What a record by one family especially as they served with distinction at three separate clubs. I know Peter, Adrian and Greg have all been honoured with club life membership. What a great VAFA family!

5 YEARS AGO – 2012 In Premier A Section the first and second semi finals were decided, the results matching their respective positions after 18 rounds - Collegians 15.11 were too strong for Old Xaverians 15.11 to 9.9 although Collegians only broke away in the third term having trailed the Xavs at quarter time and half time. Xavs had actually led 4.4 to zero in the first 20 minutes of the game and it said a lot for Collegians and their coaches to orchestrate the turnaround. Best - Ferguson, Taft (3), Tardif, Kamener, Sautner (5), Bull (Collegians) and Agius, Dimattina, Ball, Colbert, Kennedy, Rogerson (Old Xavs). It was also relatively close in the second semi but De 54

La were in control at the final siren 14.14 to 11.12. Best - Hine, Moloney, Humphrey, Jarvis, Lowe, Vickers (DLS) and van den Broek, Hill, Bowden, Eva, Dick, Houlihan (Scotch). It also went along the same lines In Premier B Section when Uni Blacks defeated St Kevins 11.14 to 1.7 in the second semi to earn a week’s rest and Beaumaris won their encounter against Old Melburnians 18.13 to 16.4 in what was not the most pleasant weather conditions. Best (2nd Semi) - Batten, Mahaon, Willingham, Weekley, Lahy, Delahunty (Blacks) and Brick, Nash, Bishop, Weber, Keely, Shanahan (St Kevins). And, (1st Semi) Haynes, Buckley, Ensor, McNicholas, Duggan, Dean (Beaumaris) and De Fegely, Beaumont, Hywood, Maccioli, Paule (Melburnians). A wonderful photograph appeared in the ‘footy record’ of three generations of Uni Black’s Costello family Black’s captain Dan, his grandfather Dr Brian and uncle Simon (aka Harry). Dan could be congratulated for leading the Blacks back into Premier Section; Dr Brian for his exceptional and outstanding service to amateur football in general and specifically as the long standing medical officer for VAFA Rep teams and Simon, Black’s legend and highly regarded member of the Big V Club. The photographer was Dan’s father, Professor Anthony Costello, also a member of the Black’s 1974 premiership with Simon, also a highly regarded doctor (paediatrician). When one talks about VAFA royalty, the Costello family are right at the very top!

10 YEARS AGO – 2007 In A Section Old Brighton had a field day in the preliminary finals winning both seniors and Reserves and therefore progressing to the grand finals to meet the all-conquering Old Xaverians. Uni Blues could not find the goals enough in the main game with the ‘Tonners’ able to answer every challenge winning 13.15 to 6.12. Best - Hendra, Hughes, Jakobi, Dickerson, Pirrie (5), M Gadsden. (Brighton) and McKinnon, Knowles, Steele, Gleeson, Watts, O’Riley (Uni Blues). The Reserves’ game was much closer with Brighton just managing to hang on for a 2 point win over De La Salle. The following weekend might see a big night in Brighton if all things were to go well. In a terrific game in B Section, Uni Blacks won the preliminary final and finally gained a return to A Section. They had to come from a 5 goal deficit at half time to overrun Old Essendon Grammarians 18.13 to 13.5. Best - Batten, M Kempton, Vanderloo (5), Costello, Symon, Purcell (Uni Blacks) and Skurrie (6), Day, Biggs, Goullet, Ward, Clifton (Old Essendon). In C Section, Old Carey won the right to play in the grand final with a narrow win against Rupertswood 20.15 to 19.17, the match played at St Bernard’s College. The lead changed a number of times in the exciting contest. Best - Kent, Holland (8), Parton, Evans, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

Wigney, Laidlaw (Old Carey) and Phillips (4), Monzell, Pretty (3), Allport, Walsh, Bishop (Rupertswood).

20 YEARS AGO – 1997 Old Scotch won the right to challenge Old Xaverians the following week for the title when they led Old Haileybury all day in the A Section preliminary final, finally winning 13.10 to 10.13. Best - Smith, Steele, O’Brien, Wilson, Laird, Collins (Scotch) and Seccull, S Waldon, Warden, Connell, Morey, Phillips (Haileybury). In B Section St Kevins kicked poorly for goal but still managed to defeat Melbourne High School Old Boys 13.21 to 10.10 and had led for the majority of the match. MHSOB’s loss of ruckman McIntyre in the second quarter did not help their cause allowing SKOBS’ Olive to take control. Best - Bossong, Keighran, Farquharson, Kennedy, Ryan (7), Dollman (SKOBS) and Pertzel, Skinner, Cassell, Woodley, Howard, Tilling (MHSOB). Marcellin Old Collegians had a fantastic win in C Section to take the premiership defeating North Old boys 15.21 to 12.9 and had come from third position to win the title. Best - O’Flynn, Cox, Slattery, Caffry (3), Dineen, Rowe (Marcellin) and Boyle (4), Smith, Tonkin, Forbes, Curry, Manassa (NOBS).

30 YEARS AGO – 1987 The A Section preliminary final turned out to be a fantastic contest with the first half suggesting that Old Paradians would go on to the grand final holding a four and a half goal lead over Ormond. Ormond’s Mike McArthur-Allen had other ideas and made significant changes to his line-up for the second half. A Magnificent third quarter of 8 goals to the Monds saw them hold a three goal lead and the final quarter was goal for goal with Ormond’s Paul Schuhkraft supreme at full forward. Ormond’s 17 point win was very powerful. Best - McMahon, Nash (3), Schuhkraft (8), Cox, Sutherland (3), Tobin (Ormond) and Gleeson, Woods, Skerritt (6), Board, Grills, Canavan (Old Paradians). St Bernards defeated Therry in the B Section preliminary final 13.19 to 7.12 and their 7 goals in the last quarter was exciting football. Best - Sullivan, Nathan, O’Dea, Hogan, Comito, Federico (St Bernards) and Flaherty, Reddick, Quinn, Ratcliffe, Gibson, Matton (Therry). The Best and Fairest Awards had been decided with Frank Gleeson (Old Paradians) winning A Section’s J N Woodrow Medal; Gary Williams (Parkside) B Section’s G T Moore Medal and Tony Fellows (Thomastown) C Section’s L S Pepper Medal.

40 YEARS AGO – 1977 In A Section, De La Salle staged a form reversal to score a runaway win over St Bernards in the preliminary final. De La were comfortably in front by half time and never looked like being headed. Best players – Nugent, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

Crothers (7), P McDonald, Wright, Beddoe, Dunn (DLS) and Rackham, Doolan Powell (3), Smith, Wade, Drennan (St Bernards). In a B Section thriller, the preliminary final saw Ivanhoe defeat Reservoir Old Boys by a solitary point to win the right to play Old Scotch in the grand final and promotion to A Section. The lead changed a number of times before the final score on 13.15 to 13.14 in Ivanhoe’s favour. Best players – Johnson, Renshaw, Freeman, Drapac, Stredwick, Quinlivan (Ivanhoe) and Taggart, R Shepherd (4), Bates, S Wilson, McKerrow (4), Paulka (Reservoir). A brilliant win to Old Brighton in the D Section grand final against Alphington thrilled the Brighton supporters who won from third position after round 18. The multi talented goal scorers for Brighton were prominent. Best players – Jones (6), Epstein, J Shepherd (8), Warnock, J Priestley (5), Kemp (Old Brighton) and K Candy (5), Chilcott, Shaw, Shearer, Gale, G Candy (Alphington).

50 YEARS AGO – 1967 The D Section Grand Final was an excellent contest between St Pat’s Old Collegians and Hampton Rovers although it looked like a boil over when St Pat’s led by nearly 7 goals in the second quarter. The Rovers, in typical style, fought back strongly and were within striking distance at three quarter time. The Rovers had won in the air but in the end St Pat’s small men won the day with a final score 12.7 to 9.13. Best players – Sullivan (4), Ball, Fry, Munro, Vansuylen, Seaburgh (St Pat’s) and Stroud, McKenzie, Rorey, Devery, James, Smith (Hampton Rovers). Assumption Old Collegians romped home with the E Section flag against Tooronga Malvern, 14.18 to 8.9 after leading all day. Best players – Heath (5), O’Keefe, Beaumont, Pidgeon, Birrell, Purletti (Assumption) and Graham (3), Bean, Anderson, Bent, Sheedy, I Downs (Tooronga).

60 YEARS AGO – 1957 In D Section, National Bank’s brilliant first quarter (7 goals to 1) set up their premiership win over De La Salle with a final winning score, 15.12 to DLS 6.10. De La made little impression after the first quarter with the Bank’s defence almost impregnable. Best players – Selleck (3), Dick (3), Studham, Morris, Prescott (National Bank) and Teague, Slattery, Varcoe, J Kelly, Purcell (DLS). In the E Section Grand Final, Port Melbourne turned the tables on AJAX after trailing at half time. With a strong wind blowing straight down the ground, AJAX had the advantage in the last quarter but could not make up the 4 goal deficit. Final score Port Melbourne 8.13 to AJAX 7.10. Best players – McKnight, Mahoney, Bogdanoff, Elmer (3), Aghan (Port) and Slonim, Kalman, Rosenberg, A Shostak, S Shostak (AJAX). 55

THE VAFA AND IRELAND

THIS HISTORY BETWEEN VAFA AND IRELAND The history of the first Ireland trip in 2005 included Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. The Australian Amateur Football Council (AAFC) was formed in 1933. SA, Victoria and Tasmania were the three original states, WA joining after the war. The AAFC played carnivals every three years, the AAFC disbanded in 1996. In 2002 a triennial carnival was introduced over a three year period in an U23 format. Victoria won the first U23 carnival, coached by Nick Bourke in 2004, this was his last year as senior coach, assisted by Anthony Amad, Gerard Sholly, Bruno Conti and John Kanis. Gerard Sholly a doyen of identifying and recruiting Irish talent (think the O’Halpins and Zac Touhey) was a key driver in what we currently have today. It wasn’t until 2005 when his brother Michael was appointed VAFA CEO that the idea became a reality. In his first year as CEO Michael suggested to SA and WA we should take an All Australian U23 team to Ireland. The rest is history. Frank Dunell was the first coach in 2005, Tim McKinnon from Uni Blues was the captain, Frank’s assistant was Bob Cross the SA coach. In 2005 the Ireland economy was very strong forcing the touring party to stay in backpackers as the cost of hotels was extremely high, not an ideal way to travel but the bond was fantastic. Most are still friends from the Board to the Players. Every trip after 2008, the boys have stayed in hotels as the Irish economy was struggling, hence the price of accommodation dropped significantly. The connection between the three states was life long. The first game was against All Ireland at Croke Park, where we were soundly beaten. We played games in Cork, Galway and Dublin. In 2005 we stayed in London for two days at the end of the trip. In Ireland you can’t turn up and train at a local ground. You will be thrown off as the GAA own all the grounds. This made our life tough as we were always fighting with grumpy curators who guarded their territory like a war zone. The game against Bishoptownin Cork was a tough

56

game, don’t think in my five tours have I seen such a physical game. The Irish are very tough, they prefer International Rules as they love tackling, as opposed to Gaelic where you can only bump. It’s a surprise the GAA has never introduced the tackle plus interchange, they still have the substitute. In 2007 Mark Shadiac (SA), Tony Amad, Nick Bourke and Michael Sholly went to Tasmania in an attempt to bring them back into the AAFC. The Tasmania football scene was in disarray, there was so much in-fighting. Tasmania was somehow convinced to come back into the AAFC. In 2007 a combined Vic, SA, WA played at Auroura Stadium against a composite team from the Mariners, Devils and North, South zones. Rick Giles from SA was captain, the combined team won by five goals. In 2008 the AAFC toured Ireland with the four states, Bob Cross SA was coach, Wayne Langbourne WA, and Jeremy Bourke Vic were Bob’s assistants. Jack Watts, Uni Blues was captain. George Janko was the doctor, Tim Sutcliffe was the umpire. The Victorians in the squad included Ben Dowd (SKOBs) - a natural at Gaelic , Peter McGettigan (St. Bedes Mentone Tigers), Brendan Iezzi (Old Trinity) and Andrew McGinness (Old Brighton). The touring party was large with officials and parents, there were four states, games were played against Bishoptown, National Uni Ireland, Donaghmore Ashmore and Dublin City University GAA DCU Academy in Dublin. In the game against Ashmore, they had past and present players who played at Croke Park two weeks before. They were a quality team and to be within a whisker was an outstanding effort by our boys. Tour highlights on ALL the Ireland trips include Blarney Castle, Cliffs of Moher, Dublin, Cork, Galway nightlife. Life long memories and friends for life. In 2010, the AAFC decided to tour South Africa, this was a new frontier. Trent Zimbachs (Collegians) and Jack Watts (Uni Blues) were on that trip, Mick Dwyer (Old Haileybury) was coach.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

In 2011 the VAFA decided to tour in own right. After their powerful win against the VCFL, Dean Anderson was coach assisted by Michael Blood and Luke Beveridge. This was a fantastic tour, Rick Brockwell (Banyule) had a number of training sessions with barbecues at his club. This created great bonding. Matthew Torney (Uni Blues) was captain. We had so many injuries, Nick Sautner got injured in the first game against Na Pairsaiph in Cork in the first minute. He was our great hope, we lost 51–29. We beat Galway 64-26. We played at Ballyroan, we won 61-23. The boys played at Croke Park where we were well beaten, 81-7. Jack Hellier (St Bedes Mentone Tigers), Cameron Howat (Old Carey), George Janko, Russell Barnes, Michael Fitzgerald, team manager & media. The last game against Donaghmore Ashmore is always the highlight, where we won 28-26. We were short of players through injury, sickness, Luke Beveridge kitted up as well as an Irish guy we recruited who we met at The Australian High Commission where we went in 2011 and 2013. He was chuffed to play. After the game he made a speech. He said he was so proud to be Irish and represent the Big V, he was one of only three to do this. The other two were Sean White and Jim Stynes. After the 2011, 2013 games at Ashmore Donaghmore played in the afternoon, Tony Amad would get the players in the middle of the ground in a circle around 11pm. Each player, official, supporter would get a Cuban cigar, light up, each person would talk about the trip in a valedictory manner! The trips meant so much to the players! Amazing what this life experience meant!

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

From 2011, the Spirit of the Big V award was presented after every game. In 2008 the game was delayed by 30 minutes on Saturday night so the church goers could make the game. There were 4000 at that game. The after game entertainment where they all grab the microphone was amazing, it’s a real highlight we don’t see this in Australia. It was reported to Confidential in the Herald Sun that the VAFA lost 48-46 in front of 64,000 at Croke Park. For the record the gates were closed. In 2013, John Kanis and Quinton Gleeson were the coaches, Ross Young (Uni Blues) captain. Games were played against Na Pairsaigh, VAFA won 102-16 in Cork, we lost 39-57 to the Combined Universities in Dublin, lost to All Ireland 102 -16 at Caven, then beat Ashmore 44–36. In 2015 we just had 18, after a few players got injured early in the first few minutes against Trabeg U21 in Cork. Cam Roberts was coach, John Kanis his assistant , we had a captain for each game, Jeremy Mugavin (Uni Blues), Marshall Rippon (Uni Blues), Sam Williams (De La Salle) and Matt Handley (Old Xaverians). We beat Trabeg 4642. We lost to Tuam Stars 54-48, beat Uni of Ireland 109-33 and ost to Ashmore 58-35. We played the AFL Europe at Battersea Park, at AFL, winning 100 -26. Great way to finish the trip, the venue was similar to the Botanical Gardens, about 1500 people watching. There were temporary goal posts. Most of the players then went to see Australia lose to Argentina after the game. Sarah Ongarello, Megan Hession from AFL Europe organised the game. The after game put on by AFL Europe was amazing, a great way to finish. There are so many Aussies living OS, they all turn up and catch up with their mates. London, a great way to finish the tour. Thanks to Tony Amad for his major contribution to the above piece.

THE VAFA AND IRELAND

There were six provinces playing in Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The players loved the culture, so different to what they have been used to the players were assigned in a coaching role for the teams. We then played their best on a Saturday. The players did clinics at a few schools in Johannesburg. Most of the kids came from the ghettos. We have not been back to South Africa.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

2017 VAFA MEN’S RISING STAR: SHORTLIST Six players have been shortlisted for the 2017 Men’s Rising Star Award from the talented crop of 19 who were nominated after each round this season. After a thorough deliberation process, those shortlisted and in the running to take out the coveted award are Lachlan Sullivan (St Kevin’s), Nick Baltas (Caulfield Grammarians), Alex Mastromanno (Old Brighton), Joe Harrison (Monash Blues), Nino Lazzaro (Fitzroy) and Fraser Cameron (Collegians). The winner will be announced at the 2017 Woodrow Medal and Awards Night on Monday 18 September at Crown’s River Room. The Rising Star Award has long been an accurate prelude of future football success, with previous winners including two-time Woodrow Medallist Brendan Iezzi (2007), VFL listed players James Fletcher (2015), Anthony Scott (2014) and Nick Wynne (2009) and AFL player Dan Nicholson (2010). For a full list of past winners, visit vafa.com.au

LACHLAN SULLIVAN (ST KEVIN’S) Sullivan is a starting midfielder for the top-ranked team in the VAFA and was the first player nominated in 2017 following his three-goal performance in SKOB’s 42-point win over University Blues. He has been named in SKOB’s best 11 times from his 17 games and kicked 20 goals for the year; including, multiples on five occasions. What the club said: “Lachlan plays a lot like Jack Ziebell with his attack on the ball and has many strengths; including, being a tough inside mid providing options up forward, skilful with the football and he is renowned for loving his leftovers at St Kevin’s.”

NICK BALTAS (CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS) Nominated in Round 3 on the back of two goals and a standout performance against Williamstown CYMS, Baltas has gone from strength-to-strength this season. He has kicked 35 goals from 17 games for the Premier C flag favourites; including, two bags of five and multiples on nine occasions. What the club said: “His strengths as a footballer is that he can read the play very well, always finds himself in dangerous positions to create scoring opportunities and his tackling and pressure ensure that he locks the ball in the forward line.”

ALEX MASTROMANNO (OLD BRIGHTON) Mastromanno is one of the most exciting young talents in the VAFA and played a leading hand in Old THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2017

Brighton’s 16-win home and away season. The Maestro kicked 40 goals in his first 11 games; including, hauls of nine, seven and four (twice). He starred in the U19 Big V’s four-point loss to AFL Vic Country in July with five of his side’s nine goals. What the club said: “His nick-name, “Maestro”, has already launched cult status amongst players and supporters who realise how important Alex is to the Club’s future.”

JOE HARRISON (MONASH BLUES) In his first year at Monash Blues, Harrison starred through the midfield and was named in the best eight times from his 16 games. He regularly found the scoreboard with 18 goals for the finals-bound Blues and was part of the valiant U19’s team who narrowly missed out on victory against AFL Victoria Country. What the club said: “He plays like Jobe Watson – strong body, sure hands, gets plenty of contested ball and racks up lots of possessions.”

NINO LAZZARO (FITZROY) After playing two games for Fitzroy’s Holmeglen U19 side, Lazzaro was called up to the senior team where he has flourished ever since. Although a highly-talented half forward, injury to key Roys forced Lazzaro to play a key position role for much of the season where he has kicked 30 goals from 15 games; including, two bags of five. The consistent young star hit the scoreboard in all but one match. What the club said: “As a mid-sized forward he’s got a great grab and strong ground-level skills too, with a nice burst of pace, keeping pressure on the defenders even when he doesn’t have the ball.”

FRASER CAMERON (COLLEGIANS) Nominated in Round 10 following a standout display in the Lions’ 10-point win over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Cameron has established himself as a key cog of the Lions’ rotation. The half back flanker has been named in the best five times and kicked goals in five of the past six games. He starred in the Lions’ eight-point win over De La Salle in Round 16 with three goals in a BOG display. What the club said: “Fraser is an attacking half back who can go into the midfield and play both inside and outside. His ability to read the play and take the game on in such a positive manner is fantastic for a player of his age.”

UMPIRES CORNER

Owen Hinson

FINALS SEASON! It is that time of the year again, when the number of available umpires far exceeds the number of appointments. To those who have been appointed this week, congratulations. Achieving a Grand Final appointment is a significant achievement, and a reward for the effort you put in throughout the season. Prepare well, umpire to the best of your ability, and most of all, don’t forget to enjoy the experience. To those who didn’t receive a final this year, we hope you pop down to a match or two and support your fellow umpires, and use this season as a launching pad for bigger and better things next year.

OUR NEWEST MEMBERS? Congratulations to Anthony and Kirsten Edmonds on the arrival of twins Eloise Grace and Thomas Francis last Friday morning. Eddo reports all are doing well. We’ve got Eloise and Thomas penciled in for their Premier debut in 2032.

PREMIER GRADE APPOINTMENTS NIGHT We encourage all umpires and connections to join us on Thursday evening for the announcement of the Premier, Premier B and Premier C (and reserves) appointments. While many umpires will have finished for the year, we love to see a good crowd down to train and celebrate the appointments.

The VAFAUA also wishes all clubs the best of luck for this weekend.
