VAFA v SAAFL
11/06/2016
In 2011, a fantastic secondment opportunity in America came up and while I was quietly petrified, I knew it would change my life. In just 5 months, I met an incredible range of people, and was really challenged professionally. I grew up more in that short time than in the 5 years prior – there’s no other situation where I could learn as much as I did so quickly. DOM MOLLUSO Audit Manager, William Buck
VAFA v SAAFL
Mixing it with the BEST The SAAFL is looking forward to once again battling against our great rivals, Victoria. After a twelve year hiatus for Open aged competition at state level, it’s great to have the opportunity for our competitions best to mix it with the best from the VAFA. Under the guidance of Coach Sean Jackson and his assistants the SAAFL has again provided the best players from our 65 clubs the chance to represent their state. With over 10,000 players eligible, the competition for the highly regarded 22 spots available has been fierce. I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers who have given their time and commitment to this year’s program. The SAAFL is pleased to be part of this AAFC Match and hope that we can showcase the quality football on offer in South Australia. After our successful Under 23 Carnival last year in Hobart we are hoping for similar success this year against what no doubt will be a tough opponent. On behalf of the SAAFL, I wish all players from both teams the very best of luck for the game and look forward to carrying on the great tradition of forged friendships from these matches. Mark Johnson SAAFL President
On behalf of the VAFA Board, administration and wider VAFA community a big welcome to the South Australian Amateur Football League team. I know both teams are well prepared and we are all set for a top class game showcasing the best of our respective competitions. Whilst representative football is off the agenda at the top AFL level, it remains as the preeminent test and a career highlight for players in our competition. Not only is it a platform to play with and against the best but history tells us that friendships and memories are created that will live long into the future. As I am sure is the case for the SA boys, representative opportunities are hard won and I know our big V boys will grow a foot taller as soon as they pull on the famous jumper. As a result, there is always an extra air of excitement and anticipation around these games as well as uncertainty given the added unknowns which leads to extra intrigue. This will all quickly come to life as the game unfolds. I wish all players coaches, umpires and officials all the best. It’s a day for everybody to bring their A game, may the best team win. Go the VAFA Tim Nelson VAFA President

Coaches Back to Back SEAN JACKSON
Sean Jackson has been coaching football for 25 years consecutively. After retiring from the SANFL as a player Sean cut his teeth coaching in the country with Loxton North in the Riverland Football League and then Goolwa in the Great Southern League. Whilst there he successfully coached the Great Southern Representative side and the combined Southern Districts in consecutive years winning both the Lovelock Shield and the State Country Carnival. Sean then journeyed back to the SANFL with stints coaching at South Adelaide U19s and then the Reserves at both Sturt and Woodville West Torrens where he led both Clubs to Premierships and also successfully coached the SANFL State U20s to wins against the SANFL U18s in two years. Sean has now been coaching in the SA Amateur League for 12 years, winning two premierships with the Flinders Park Football Club and coaching the SA State U23s to victory against WA in 2014 and to victory in the Australian U23 Carnival held last year in Hobart. Sean is now also coaching the Rostrevor Old Collegians Football Club.

STUART POWELL
Stuart is a former AJAX, St Kevin’s OB and Old Scotch senior coach, Powell brings eight years’ worth of hands on experience to the role and is honoured to receive the opportunity to impart his vast knowledge of the game and VAFA on the Big V side. Despite being unable to fulfil obligations required of a senior coach at Club level in 2015 due to his work as Director of Sport at Scotch College, Powell says the representative program allows him to stay involved in the field. “When Nigel Credlin (VAFA Director of Representative Football) approached me I just thought it was a really good fit for me being able to combine a few passions and obviously my work. “I’ve got a real love and passion for football and it’s a way of keeping me involved with the game.” Powell’s coaching panel has already started to take shape as he will be joined by brother and ex-AFL player, Stephen, as well as five-time VAFA premiership player, Dave Murray. After 142 games for the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and St Kilda, Stephen Powell will run the engine room as midfield coach of the representative side. Prior to his debut for the Bulldogs, Powell played one match for Old Melburnians in 1995. As well as five premierships as a player for Mazenod, Murray has two coaching flags and has represented the Big V himself. Appointed as the backline coach, Murray also brings a deep knowledge of AFL after working as high performance manager for Collingwood, Carlton and Hawthorn. Powell will replace Cam Roberts and Matthew Kempton at the helm after the University Blacks duo helped retain the VAFA’s standing as the AFL Victoria Metro champions with a five-point win against the Northern Football League in March last year. VAFA v SAAFL 2016
VAFA v SAAFL
VAFA History v SAAFL The Big V senior representative squad of 44 was culled down during the last 3 weeks to the selected 22 today under Head Coach, Stuart Powell. Despite not having faced the SAAFL at senior level since 2004, the VAFA and its South Australian counterpart share a storied history of representative clashes, totaling 70 matches over the past 91 years. The first match was held in 1925 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the most recent at Elsternwick Park. The VAFA currently holds the ascendancy on the
scoreboard, with 54 victories at a 77% win rate and is on a seven-game winning streak. A VAFA win today will equal the longest winning streak between the two sides, which is currently held by the VAFA from 1977 – 1984. The SAAFL’s strongest period of dominance came between 1969 and 1973, defeating the VAFA four out of the five times they met by an average winning margin of 29 points. Further information on each of the 70 matches between the two sides can be found in the table below.

VAFA v SAAFL LAST TIME THEY MET…
The VAFA and SAAFL last faced each other in 2004 during the AAFC Triennial Championships at Elsternwick Park. With both sides fielding strong outfits comprising of the best talent from their respective competitions, the VAFA managed to run out 85-point winners under the guidance of senior coach, Nick Bourke. A four-goal to nil opening term gave the VAFA a 30-point quarter time buffer, with best-onground recipient, Tim Ockleshaw, leading from the front and compiling possessions at will. The VAFA did not give an inch for the remainder of the match, recording 15 of the last 21 goals in the ensuing three quarters, with David Biggs and James Beaumont kicking three each for the Big V. Despite the loss, Lister registered two of the SAAFL’s six majors for the match.
