THE LAST WEEKEND
George Voyage – VAFA President
The final week of the season has arrived and on-field it is down to the last two teams in each of our three Premier grades, as well as the Reserves and Premier Thirds. In Premier C, the dream lives on for AJAX who have had a remarkable turnaround and undefeated run over the last nine games. The Jackas come up against minor premiers Williamstown CYMS who have had a magnificent season without loss. The CY’s efforts in lifting themselves up and working so hard to put the memories from last season behind them is to be admired. AJAX is a hard running, skilful and most worthy opponent in what promises to be a wonderful game at Trevor Barker Oval. In Premier B, Caulfield Grammarians and Old Scotch battle for supremacy in a rematch of their one-point second semifinal thriller. These have been the top two and most consistent teams in this section throughout the season and it could well be another epic battle at Elsternwick Park on Saturday afternoon.
and congratulations are in order for Old Scotch (U19 Premier), Old Melburnians (U19 Division 1), Hampton Rovers (U19 Division 2), Kew (U19 Division 3) and Williamstown CYMS (U19 Division 4) for winning their respective Grand Finals. Medal winners and leading goal kickers were announced for all grades in our first ever combined VAFA Best & Fairest awards night last Wednesday at the inaugural VAFA Politix Awards Dinner. With close to 400 guests present, the night was a huge success.
But at this time we must be aware and recognise the roles of our volunteers, coaches and support staff who every week prepare our more than 10,000 registered male and 4,000 female players and for William Buck Premier making our competition what it is today. I would particularly like to acknowledge was another most our umpires, their association and coaches who turn up each week to competitive section adjudicate such a demanding sport.

Last weekend, the Men’s Divisional Grand Finals were held with congratulations to St Francis Xavier (Division 4), Aquinas (Division 3), Whitefriars (Division 2) and Preston Bullants (Division 1) on their respective victories over Albert Park, Manningham Cobras, Brunswick NOBS and UHS-VU. Despite results, all of these clubs have earnt promotion to the higher section for season 2020 except for St Francis Xavier who sadly are moving to another league.
Spread across Melbourne with people of all backgrounds, ours is the best football competition in Australia. We are about the love of the game and our clubs offer more than just football. It is a place for camaraderie, friendships and a safe haven for all.
Our Holmesglen U19 premiers were decided last weekend
If you are from a club that didn’t enjoy the successes hoped – well, hang in there...your turn will come.
But now it’s on with the Grand Finals. The umpire is about to bounce the ball..... Game on!

Grand Final Preview: Blues vs SKOB If you sat down on the eve of the 2019 season and ran a fine-tooth comb over every list in William Buck Premier, there’s no doubting University Blues and St Kevin’s OB would have the highest number of pundits selecting their paper-based squads as the top two in the competition. As it turns out, the best lists on paper have performed accordingly throughout this year’s finals series and will clash at Elsternwick Park on Sunday for the 2019 premiership. The Blues, who put paid to any suggestion of wearing a warmblooded primate as a cape in last week’s second semi-final, will try and claim their first A-Grade/Premier flag since 2004. Historically, they’ve underperformed on the big day with 10 losses from 13

attempts, but as senior coach Heath Jamieson said at the VAFA William Buck Finals Lunch last Friday, he (and this group) are zero from zero. As for SKOB, they were ruthless on Sunday against Xavs, once again proving their ability to win the ball at the contest and use it with class on the outside is as good as it gets in the competition. While they finished fourth at the end of the home & away fixture, SKOB’s record against this year’s finalists is 5-2 – the same as Uni Blues. They will be looking to become the first team since Xavs from 1998-2000 (albeit six consecutive from ‘95) to win three straight flags in the VAFA’s top section. The carrot of three straight in Plugger’s last game would be a dream for the SKOB faithful.
Head-to-Head: 1-1 Round 5: They first met in Round 5 when the home side, St Kevin’s OB, kicked away to a 19-point victory. Jack Holden was the star of the show with 32 disposals and two goals while Tom Young had 30 for the Blues. Will Coates lifted in the absence of Anthony Lynch and held Cordy to 44 hit outs and one goal. Round 11: When they faced off at the Uni Oval it was the Blues who held on by four points after leading by 21 at three quarter time. Cordy returned fire with 65 hit outs, two goals and three Woodrow votes while Nick Wood racked up 31 and 14 clearances for SKOB.
The Cream Rises Even Further As discussed in this column last week, the importance of top-end talent in big finals is paramount to the success of any eventual premier. Think Billy Kanakis and Mitch Brown in the last two grand finals, each winning a Jock Nelson Medal. Kanakis has dominated in his past five finals for SKOB averaging three goals a game, while Brown and Waite will continue to attract the best run-with and best defender. As for Blues, take your pick. This season belonged to Cordy, O’Shea, Young and Green but it was Kieran Harper’s three goals in the third term that proved the difference against Xavs two weeks ago.
Who do they need to stop? Uni Blues: Sam Critchley. The star SKOB defender was left to his own devices for a large part of Sunday’s preliminary final and consistently fell back and intercepted Xavs’ forward thrusts. The man had 10 marks at half time and has now had 39 from his past four games! St Kevin’s OB: It’s the safe choice but clearly two-time Woodrow Medallist Ayce Cordy will be at the top of SKOB’s hit list. He averaged 42 hit outs and 17 disposals per game in 2019 but his one wood is the ability to push forward and impact the scoreboard - something he has done in all but two games this season.
Predictions Premiers: St Kevin’s OB Jock Nelson Medal: Lachie Sullivan (SKOB)
X-Factors Uni Blues: Josh Green – The former Bomber and Lion has popped up with five goals twice and six once this year and chipped in against SKOB with three and two during their two encounters. Conor Ross will likely stand Green in one of the more enthralling matchups on game day. SKOB: Lachie Sullivan – After winning the VAFA Rising Star Award in 2017, Sullivan has gone on to become one of the pre-eminent midfielders in the competition (when he’s not at VFL level). He wins the contested ball and delivers with precision, making him one of the most dangerous threats to the Blues’ chances. 5

Grand Final Preview: Fields vs Cardinals Despite holding a strong 31-point lead midway through the third term, Old Scotch had to rely on some stable pillars of their elite defensive structure to see off a ferocious University Blacks outfit by five-points to advance to William Buck Premier in 2020, and a Grand Final clash against Caulfield Grammarians this weekend. Following majors from Xavier Vearing and Ben Haysman to bring the Scotch lead back to just five points with four minutes to play, it would take three consecutive last line of defence marks from Charlie Cormack, James Samson and Jordan Clarke to repel their counterparts surge and secure a memorable victory at Elsternwick Park. As well as taking one of the game saving marks deep into the final term, James Sansom also bagged himself three critical majors in a best on ground performance, while Nick Jamieson, Charlie Cormack and Jack Bull also received the votes in a remarkable game of football. Heartbreak for Uni Blacks who for the second year in a row come up short in a preliminary final and miss the cut off for a return to William Buck Premier, extending their Premier B stay to three seasons. Joel Ernest and Ben Haysmen both kicked two while the one-two punch of Josh Steadman and Jordan Quaile fought gallantly all afternoon to give their side the best opportunity to advance. Blacks will lick their wounds and looks to bounce back in 2020 with a fresh approach, hopefully not too many changes and a keen eye still on promotion next season. Preview Caulfield Grammarians vs Old Scotch After 169 days, 93 matches and an impressive 38 victories between them, it all comes down to this. The two best sides all year in Caulfield Grammarians, fresh off a week on the sidelines, and Old Scotch, who come off a monumental victory over Uni Blacks, will go at it once again for the right to be crowned Premiers of Premier B for 2019. After duelling out a classic just a fortnight ago, which saw the Fields secure the win by the smallest of margins, it would take quite a show for the sequel this weekend to match the original, but would we be surprised? With the elite talent each side possess, it is no surprise that these are the two outfits jostling it out for the flag. Star Will Edwards leads a tough in and under midfield core that helped produce ample opportunities to the highest scoring forward line in the competition, led by Julian Dobosz and Will Barker, while Lachie Harris, Joseph McClelland and the X-factor Brendon Goddard has helped Caulfield achieve the stingiest defensive mark in the competition, conceding just over 52-points a game. Arguably possessing the greatest ruckman in the competition and GT Moore Medallist Tom Downie, Scotch already may have the advantage in the middle of ground, especially if the likes of James Sansom, Will Mitchell and Jack Bull are on song, they are a very tough midfield line-up to handle. Downie’s ability to go forward and work with the likes of Josh Halsall and Andrew Jelbart also could cause some headaches, while Charlie Cormack and company will be tasked once again to come up big like they did on the weekend as Julian Dobosz makes his way to Elsternwick Park. Caulfield hold the ascendancy in head to head battles, winning two of the three games this season, including that one-point qualifying final thriller, while Scotch hold the advantage historically, owning a 3-2 lead in games played since 2011. Caulfield average over 112-points per contest, a whole 14-points to the good of the second placed Scotch who managed THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2019

98-points a game. Caulfield’s last Grand Final was in 2017 when they went down to Old Haileybury by 48 points in Premier C, while Scotch last featured on the big stage also in 2017, when they went down to Old Brighton by 36-points in their last stay in Premier B. The more experienced, more dangerous and more loaded outfit should get the job done, so look for Caulfield to raise another flag in the pavilion at Glenhuntly Reserve. Tip: Caulfield Grammarians

Grand Final Preview: CYs vs Jackas As both sides registered a win against each other throughout the home & away season, there was a lot to anticipate in the Premier C Preliminary final on Saturday afternoon as we awaited who would take on the CY’s in the season’s decider. It was a sweet feeling for the Jackas, as they earnt the right to compete for Premier C gold this coming Saturday. There are many things to celebrate after defeating the Monders for the second straight time this campaign with a stellar 46-point winning margin, and coming from eighth position mid-season to now contesting for the coveted trophy. AJAX gave our reigning Division 1 premiers, Ormond, little room to negotiate on Saturday afternoon, setting the tone early and constantly applying the pressure to finally oust the Monders’ from the Premier C title race. Multiple scorers propelled the Jackas into the final showdown but it was Alex Wollan (3) and Chris Hamilton (2) who led the way in addition to star outings from both Jordan and Nicholas Cohen as well as Richie Simon. AJAX now sit one win shy of premiership glory as they plan to avenge their last defeat to the CY’s in stunning fashion.

Key Matchups
The unconquered CY’s stand to lose everything as they enter the Grand Final against AJAX this Saturday, 19 straight wins without a hiccup speaks for itself. In the CY’s Semi-Final against Ormond, the Monders’ put up a valiant effort which proved to be of no avail as the CY’s found a way to rise with a 28-point victory. Whenever they have their backs to the fence, they have fired back and produced the goods when it counted, defeating the best sides in the Premier C division and making it look easy - including the Jackas. The Jackas are in remarkable form that would even surprise themselves as they move into the Grand Final with a winning streak of nine games. A string of stunning performances elevated the Jackas from bottom to top, shocking the league. If there’s ever a team to beat the CY’s during their unbeatable season, the Jackas can’t be too far off after some strong outings in the finals against Old Ivanhoe Grammarians and Ormond. A gritty effort against the Hoers in the Semi-Final to come from behind was exactly what they needed to push towards a Grand Final berth. They secured the win by a margin of 10 points and would move on to face Ormond, who came off a bitter defeat to the CY’s. AJAX would continue their win streak with their second win over Ormond for the year, cementing their position as the team to watch when the siren sounds.
Round 5 saw a nail-biter clash between these two teams, as Williamstown CYMS prevailed by a single point at Gary Smorgon Oval. In what was a close first term, the Jackas promptly took a respectable 20-point lead to end the first half. Within a quarter, all that hard work had diminished as the CY’s climbed their way back to boast a five-point buffer. In the last quarter, both teams gave it everything but the CY’s had done enough as Dylan Jones starred with the help of two goals from two-time Zachariah Medallist, Yuma Hemphill. Stuart Fayman of AJAX was their best with three goals. Round 11 told a different story, as the CY’s completely dominated AJAX to run away with a 67-point win. Apart from a noble third quarter effort, which included five goals from the Jackas, it was a game they would want to forget quickly. Multiple scorers hit the board in bags, with targetman Lachlan Fairley booting four goals for the CY’s as well Parkinson, Gray, and Chan slotting three each. Dylan Jones would once again prove indispensable in their encounters with another BOG outing. This would also mark the resurgence of the Jackas, having been undefeated since this matchup, the Jackas are hungrier than ever to prove to everyone they are the best side in the competition. Williamstown CYMS: Thomas Johnstone, Yuma Hemphill, Lachlan Fairley, Dylan Jones Williamstown’s Yuma Hemphill has had another tremendous season with a second straight Premier C B&F Medal, the Zachariah Medal, to his name. Dylan Jones polled 13 votes in the Zachariah Medal count, in addition to two BOG features against the Jackas. AJAX: Nicholas Lewis, Jake Lew, Charles Hamilton, Brent Shapiro Nicholas Lewis has been an enforcer for the Jackas, polling 14 votes in the Premier C B&F this season with many key performances throughout their campaign. FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME VAFA Politix Awards Dinner The VAFA hosted its first-ever combined awards night, the VAFA Politix Awards Dinner, at The Pullman East Melbourne on Wednesday 11 September 2019 with Ayce Cordy (University Blues) and Imogen Barnett (Old Trinity) taking home the top gongs as the best & fairest players in William Buck Premier. Cordy became just the fifth player since 1927 to win consecutive Woodrow Medals after polling 23 votes during a season where the Blues claimed the minor premiership. Despite spending more time up forward, the Blues’ captain managed 35 goals for the year, and averaged 42 hit outs and 17 disposals per game. While ranking 4th for hit outs, Cordy followed up his ruck work and managed at least 6 clearances in 11 games while going goalless just twice. He outpolled fellow finalists Marshall Rippon (Uni Blues – 17), Cauley Beetham (Old Xavs – 17), Gus Borthwick (Old Melburnians – 16), Adam Bentick (St Bernard’s – 14) and Nick Pavlou (Old Brighton – 14). Barnett (28 votes) was instrumental to Trinity’s success throughout the home and away fixture, ranking second in the competition for hit outs, first for marks, third for inside 50’s and averaging 18.2 disposals per game. Despite missing 3 games throughout the middle of the year, Barnett posted 8 matches with at least 16 disposals, 33 hit outs & a goal. Barnett’s fellow finalists on the night included Teresa Zampaglione (Fitzroy-ACU – 20), Ally Hynes (SKOB Saints – 17) and Vanessa Murphy (Old Trinity – 14). Earlier in the night, Hamish Dick (Old Brighton) and Madi Capsalis (Old Mentonians) were crowned the 2019 VAFA Rising Star winners, while Gus Borthwick (Old Melburnians) and Vanessa Murphy (Old Trinity) were named the Premier Coaches MVP’s. The ceremony showcased the very best talent from all sections of the Association with the previously announced B&F winners from Holmesglen U19’s and the B-D4 men’s and women’s sections presented with the medallions, while the leading goal kickers were also recognised for their outstanding seasons. Of note was St Francis Xavier star Harrison Coe who spoke on behalf of all men’s leading goal kickers after kicking 105 goals in Division 4. Oliver Murray (Most Promising Umpire) and Matt Oakley (Umpire of the Year) cleaned up the VAFA Umpire Awards, with Oakley having claimed the top prize three times from the past four years.

VAFA WOMEN’S GRAND FINAL RESULTS Alisha Min
William Buck Premier
Premier C Reserve
SKOB Saints have took out the premiership flag in the William Buck Premier women’s section for season 2019 following a nine-point victory over West Brunswick on Sunday 18 August 2019. Played in trying conditions at Elsternwick Park, where rain and wind pelted the ground for the whole match, a scoreless opening term ensued before the Saints managed two points in the second quarter. With both sides able to find the middle of the sticks after halftime, with Jessica Joyce slotting one for SKOB and Helen Lawrence another for the Westies, only a point distinguished the teams going in to the final term. Putting it all on the line in the fourth and final quarter for the year, and inspired by a phenomenal boundary-line goal from Georgia Cropley, the Saints secured their first every premiership in the VAFA Wilson Women’s competition. Awarded for her standout performance on the day, SKOB’s Ellie McLinden was awarded the BOG medal from the officiating umpires. Gallant in defeat, Melissa Lindsay and Emma Lippmann were named in the Magpies best.
Canterbury held off a surging Mazenod on their way to claiming the Premier C reserve premiership title for 2019 on Sunday 18 August 2019. Getting off the mark early, the Cobras had a ten-point lead at the first change of ends before the Nodders made it a one-point ballgame at halftime. Two majors in the third quarter gave Canterbury a 14-point lead at 3QT, before a gutsy Mazenod kicked 1.6 in the final term to fall short by just two points. Georgina Callaghan (Canterbury) was awarded the BOG Medallion for the afternoon, while teammate Mary Spillane bagged two majors. Magdalene McPhee and Michella Angelucci worked tirelessly for Mazenod on the day.
William Buck Premier Reserve Not without success, however, West Brunswick claimed back-to-back reserves premierships after defeating Melbourne University by 20 points. The Westies made their presence felt early in this match, dobbing 3.3 in the opening half all while keeping the Mugars scoreless. Not without a fightback, the University side had forward-line opportunities in front of goals in the final quarter but were unable to convert any majors (fi ve points). Four individual goal scorers contributed to the Westies final score, including Gemma Gray, Isabella Gietzmann, Simona Castricum and Kristina Krithararis, while Brodie Aumont was awarded the BOG medallion. Samantha Marshall and Stephanie Perrott fought hard for the defeated Mugars.
Premier B Caulfield Grammarians emerged as premiers of Premier B after defeating Old Xaverians by 14 points on Sunday 18 August 2019. Played in equally as testing conditions at Mentone Grammar Playing Fields, the wet & wild weather limited scoring opportunities for both teams, so much so that the 0.0-0 (Old Xaverians) v 2.2-14 (Caulfield Grammarians) halftime score line remained unchanged until the final siren. For the victorious Fields, Irena Malliaras’ brilliant performance earnt her the BOG medallion, while Kate Macqueen and Montana White dobbed a goal each. For Xavs, Caitlin Hickey and Gabby Golds were fantastic.
Premier B Reserve The 14-point victory margin in the senior Premier B match was replicated in the reserves, as Old Geelong went on to defeat Old Xaverians. The Oggettes led from start to finish in this contest, managing a 13-point buffer at halftime thanks to their 3.1 to Xavs 1.0, before adding a further 1.4 in the latter half to Xavs 1.3 to take out the flag. Vicky Tan was deemed the BOG by the officiating umpires thanks to her three goals in the OG’s victory. Hannah Ryan and Demi McLaren led from the front for Xavs.
Premier C Yarra Old Grammarians ran out 21-point victors over Brunswick Renegades in the Premier C Grand Final at Mentone Grammar Playing Fields on Sunday 18 August 2019. Making the most of their chances early, before the inclement well and truly hit, Alyssia Blewonski (2) and Georgia Hatton (1) were responsible for the Bushrangers’ three majors for the afternoon. Continuing her brilliant season, which saw her take out the Premier C B&F Medal, the umpires awarded Sarah Kerr the BOG medal in this final match of the year. For the Renegades, who were held goalless for the first time all year, Samara Griffin and Andie Bleicher were standouts. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2019

Division 1 Capping off a brilliant unbeaten season in Division 1 was Scotch Stars, who defeated Old Brighton by 73 points in the Grand Final at Mentone Grammar Playing Fields on Sunday 18 August 2019. Leading from start to finish, it was a fi ve-goal to none second quarter which gave the Stars a significant 36-point buffer at the major break, which they followed-up with a four-goal to nothing final term. The Tonners were held to their opening quarter score, 1.2, for the match entirety. With nine individual goal contributors, Anna Hayes and Division 1 B&F Medal co-winner, Lily Goss, sat atop the pack with two goals apiece, while Mimi Hill was awarded the BOG medal. The Tonners, who would be enormously proud of their 2019 achievements, had Division 1 B&F Medal dual winner, Siena Visentini, and Layne Davies as their best.
Division 2 Therry Penola were crowned Division 2 premiers for 2019 after defeating Williamstown CYMS by six points at Elsternwick Park on Sunday 18 August 2019. A dominant opening term, where the Lions slotted fi ve majors while keeping the CY’s scoreless, was the key to Therry’s first-ever premiership victory. True to form, however, Williamstown edged away at their 34-point 3QT deficit in the final term – booting 4.2 with the wind to almost snatch the win in an inspired fourth-quarter turnaround. Lions co-captain, Bridget Costello, was brilliant for the winners, and was the recipient of the BOG medal, while teammate Melissa Coulthard slotted three goals for the day. Hannah Elliott was responsible for two of the CY’s six majors, as teammate Shannon Egan was also brilliant.
Division 3 Preston Bullants claimed the Division 3 premiership flag for 2019 after beating Hampton Rovers by 21 points at Mentone Grammar Playing Fields on Sunday 18 August 2019. The Bullants notched a seven-point to nothing opening term in this Grand Final battle, before the Rovers gained momentum in the second to go into the halftime break with a four-point lead. Swinging back in Preston’s favour in the third, where the higher ranked side booted two majors to Hampton’s one, the Bullants held firm in the final term and kept the Rovers scoreless while extending the winning margin to 21 points. Kicking a bag of fi ve for the afternoon, the most of any women’s player across all 2019 women’s Grand Finals, Kayla Del Monte was awarded the BOG Medallion – and was ably supported by the Division 3 B&F Medallist, Anita Overnden, and Alli Fisher. Bree-Anna Kavanagh and Bianca Lenarcic were listed in Hampton’s best.
Division 4 A 22-point final siren margin saw Glen Eira/Old McKinnon claim the Division 4 premiership title over Ajax at Mentone Grammar Playing Fields on Sunday 18 August 2019. Like so many of the Grand Final results across the entire VAFA Wilson Women’s competition, the team with the early ascendancy came away with premiership silverware – and that was no different here. The Gryphons strongarmed a 31-point buffer by halftime, although a determined Jackettes outfi t did manage to outscore the minor premiers 3.1 to 1.0 in the final quarter to almost cause an upset! Like her form all season, which saw her crowned the Division 4 B&F Medallist, Maddy Lister (Glen Eira) was again prolific and earnt the BOG accolade accordingly, while teammates Bridget Graffeo and Zoe Rossiter also held their own. For Ajax, Lindi Nankin and Amy Sekler (2) were gallant in defeat.

DIVISION 1 REPORT Jake Morris
Prestigious Preston snag fourth flag Another year, another banner for George Wakim, Sean Calcedo and the Preston Bullants. The boys from W.R. Ruthven Reserve secured an incredible fourth Premiership in seven seasons to steamroll through the Divisions and enter Premier C for the first time in their short VAFA history.
Uni High and sent all that hard work and pressure by the wayside.
Leading from the front once again was the captain, the back-toback LS Pepper Medallist for Division 1, Sean Calcedo. Named the Best on Ground medallist for the day, Calcedo led his side to a 10-point win over UHS-VU at Box Hill City Oval.
A disappointing afternoon for UHS-VU, who no doubt thought they were in with a real short to snatch an improbable victory, but the achievement of earning promotion through the Division competitions and return to a Premier grade for the first time since 1977 is no small feat, and they should be incredibly proud of their accomplishments top to bottom.
Despite conceding the first major of the afternoon to Nick Wallace, the Bullants controlled the play, tempo and scoreboard for most of the game, pushing the margin out to a game-high 34-point advantage early in the third term.
Liam Sutton kicked three for the Premiers while Tom Hill booted two, including the nail in the coffin midway through the final term. Along with captain Sean Calcedo who stole the show, Tom Hill, Liam Sutton and Gerard Sutton received the votes in the win.
Nick Wallace led his side with two majors while Isaac Brambley and Ben Anderson were named UHS-VU’s best.
When Gerard Sutton put through a miraculous goal early in the final term to push the margin back out to 25 points, many would have been thinking it was all but over, but the Vultures wouldn’t lie down though, and that fight and ability to never roll over and die in contests that has willed them to three grand finals in a row came through in the second half.
Both Preston and UHS-VU will now join the Premier C competition for 2020, replacing Old Camberwell Grammarians and PEGS Football Club who will join Division 1 next season. Joining the likes of Peninsula, Kew, Oakleigh and Therry Penola to name a few, the Division 1 competition is set to be just as exciting, just as tight and just as competitive as it was this year.
Booting 5.8 to 3.3 in the final two quarters, the Vultures had their opportunities to create some havoc, but wayward kicking doomed
Congratulations Preston on a memorable 2019 campaign and good luck to both sides next year in Premier C.

DIVISION 2 REPORT Anna Pavlou
Whitefriars complete perfect season Whitefriars completed their perfect season finishing as undefeated premiers after winning the Division 2 Grand Final over a fighting Brunswick NOBS by 25 points. Despite leading at the main break, the Nobbers, who had fought hard all day, were overwhelmed and overrun by a slick and composed Whitefriars outfit after half time. Best on ground and winner of the A. R . Fellows Medal was Friars defender Toby McGurgan, who spent the game collecting intercept marks at will across half back. The Friars should be congratulated on the rare feat of Premiers and undefeated Champions, and with their Reserves team also triumphant in the earlier Grand Final, Whitefriars showed they were clearly the best club in 2019. Match Review After an outstanding season of thrilling attacking ted football from Whitefriars, and a similarly good season from fellow Grand Finalists Brunswick NOBS, it all came down to the last two hours of hotly contested football at Box Hill Oval to decide whether the Nobs or the Friars would bring home the silverware for 2019. First Quarter The game started in contrast to the recent Semi Final with a confident looking Brunswick side coming out hard and fast to make a statement and put some early pressure on the red-hot favourites. In front of a big crowd, the Friars Ciaran Hickey booted the first goal of the Grand Final after only two minutes to set the Friars on the right track. However, a brace of goals from Nick Burgin and James Schmidt from the Nobs had them taking an early lead. Whitefriars peppered the goals but missed a few chances to take the lead back. Whitefriars started to settle and kicked two quick goals including a late major from Mark Stafford, to take a 24-12 lead at the first break. The Friars had 9 scoring shots to 2 and after a slow start, settled the better of the teams. Whitefriars 3.6.24 vs Brunswick 2.0.12 Second Quarter The Friars continued where they left off early in the second quarter, with Mark Stafford kicking his second goal to give his side some breathing space. The Nobbers tightened the game up after this and lifted their intensity and began to dominate the contested football, attempting to slow down the Friars fast ball movement. They kicked two goals through Josh Perez and Chris Gavaghan and when Jacob Adkins earned a free kick directly in front and calmly slotted it through, the Nobs took the lead from a shell-shocked Whitefriars. The high scoring Friars only had one scoring shot in the term while the Nobbers had six scores to take a fourpoint margin at the main break. Whitefriars 4.6.30 vs Brunswick 5.4.34
Connellan took a strong pack mark and kicked straight to put the Friars 22 points up to end the quarter. In a reversal of the second quarter, Brunswick only had one scoring shot (1 point) while Whitefriars kicked 4.3 to put one hand on the Premiership cup. Whitefriars 8.9.57 vs Brunswick 5.5.35 Final Quarter Well, it all came down to the last 25 minutes of the season to determine who would claim the mantle as the Premiership Team of 2019. A couple of early missed chances proved costly for Brunswick, while the Friars lifted their pace and began to trouble Brunswick with their slick ball use. At the 12-minute mark, Whitefriars star Angus Hands booted his first goal for the game, a long bomb from 45 metres, to heap more pressure on the fading Brunswick side and take his team to a 28-point lead. Brunswick’s Jacob Adkins marked strongly and booted his second goal at the 18-minute mark to bring his side back to within 23 points. But Ciaran Hickey, who kicked the first goal of the game, kicked a spectacular running snap to reply. A late Brunswick centre clearance landed with James Schmidt who goaled to give the Nobbers some scoreboard respectability. However, the siren sounded soon after and Whitefriars were rightly crowned Premiers and undefeated Champions for Division 2 in 2019 winning by 25 points after a dominant second half performance, outscoring the gutsy Brunswick side six goals to two after half time. FINAL SCORE – Whitefriars 10.14.74 v Brunswick 7.7.49 A.R FELLOWS MEDALLIST: Toby McGurgan (Whitefriars)
DIVISION 2 RESERVES In the earlier game, Whitefriars Reserves defeated a hot favourite MHSOB team by seven points in a low scoring thriller. Jason Spencer’s two crucial goals for the Friars proved the difference on the day in a close tussle, while Jack Richardson was best on ground ably supported by Ben Kelsey and Nick Hee. For the disappointed Unicorns, Dan Gumley and Will Hellier were best with Charles Pearson kicking two. The Friars came from third place to win their flag and make it back to back Reserves titles. Whitefriars 5.10.40 v MHSOB 4.9.33
Third Quarter The third quarter started exactly like each of the previous quarters with Whitefriars getting an early goal, this time through Dan Wood after four minutes. Just minutes later, Mark Stafford who was proving a handful for the Nobs defence, booted his third goal to put the Friars nine points up. Enter Friars superstar forward Michael Nitas, whose excellent crumbing work after a crucial Nobbers mistake finished truly for his first goal of the afternoon to extend their lead to 15 points. DIVISION 3 REPORT Tash Gunawardana
Bloods crowned Division 3 Premiers After finishing fourth last year and losing in the first week of the 2018 finals to Westbourne Grammarians, Aquinas were on a mission in the 2019 Division 3 finals series. It was mission accomplished on Sunday afternoon at Garvey Oval when they were crowned Division 3 Premiers after downing the Manningham Cobras by two points. REVIEW From the opening bounce, the Division 3 Grand Final was played at a high intensity with stoppages and strong hard tackling. The Cobras only took two minutes of the decider to open the scoring via Adam Kinniburgh. Adam Baltruweit had plenty of the ball early in the first quarter and intercepted well off the Bloods attack from middle to half back. The cobras broke away with a two-goal lead towards the end of the opening quarter and Matthew Allwood booted through a late goal for the Bloods to narrow the gap to seven points. For the Bloods, Joshua Robertson popped up with a late goal to level the scores. Ayden Sukkel scored the last goal of the opening term off one step to give the Cobras a one goal lead at quarter time. A scrappy start to the second, with both teams applying relentless pressure. The Cobras Robert Saunders kicked the opening goal which saw his side jump to a 13-point lead. For the Bloods, Anthony Mattioli nailed through a crucial goal to get within seven points. Baltruweit continued to stand up well across half back for the Cobras. With four points in favour of the Cobras, both teams defences stood up well stopping any attack in its tracks. Late in the quarter, quick ball movement from half back courtesy of Cobras’ Jason Stephens set up Anthony Raso who slotted through a nice goal and his first to give the Cobras a 10-point buffer at the main break. Momentum swayed in favour of Bloods in the second half with five goals to two. The Cobras pressed in the third term with countless inside 50 entries, but only a goal and nine behinds to show from it. Raso was influential for the Cobras inside 50, setting up teammate Ayden Sukkel who booted through the Cobras only goal to increase his side’s lead to 19 points. The Bloods’ playing coach, Ash Naulty, kicked his first to help his side get within 13 points. It was an 11-point lead midway through the third term in favour of the Cobras. Nice fast hands deep in attack from the Bloods resulted in an impressive dribbling goal from Michael Cardamone, narrowing the margin to seven points with five minutes left in the third. Again, quick ball movement from the Bloods resulted in a goal with three-and-a-half-minutes left via Billy O’Loughlin. Only two points separated the two sides with about a minute left in the third quarter and a kick after the siren from Ras, which THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2019

missed to the right, saw Manningham go in to the final change with a three-point ascendancy. With the match up for grabs, both sides showed desperation with strong tackles to start the final quarter of the 2019 Division 3 season. Naulty began the Bloods final term off on the right path, converting his second and giving his side a three-point lead. The contest was hot, with both teams giving it their all, in this back and forth last term, as the Cobras wrestled back the lead with a goal from the boot of Raso who registered his second. Raso’s goal was the only goal the Cobras scored due to Aquinas’ incredible defensive efforts. Cardamone at the 21st minute mark slotted through the Bloods second goal of the quarter and they held a two-point advantage. With ten minutes left, neither team could score with stoppages galore. Manningham peppered away at the scoreboard, struggling to gain back the lead. They would rue their missed opportunities, especially in having a shot at goal with less than 30 seconds left to win the Grand Final, but fell agonisingly short by two points. The Bloods held on to secure the 2019 Division 3 premiership. Nick Zappala battled hard in the midfield for the Cobras, while Anthony Raso (2) and Ayden Sukkel (2) combined for four goals. For the Bloods, Lachlan Barnes was awarded the Best on Ground Medal by the officiating umpires, and Cardamone impressed with two majors. Overall, the Division 3 season finished off in style with the two top teams fighting till the final siren and Aquinas, despite finishing second in the home & away season, were the team of the finals, toppling Manningham when it counted. Earlier in the day in Division 3 Reserves Grand Final, Emmaus St Leo’s emerged as premiers over Aquinas thanks to a 10-point final siren margin. Despite trailing by seven points at the final change of ends, the Animals put up a gutsy final term, led by BOG medallist Thomas Birkett, to deny Aquinas what could have been a dual Premiership winning day.
DIVISION 4 REPORT Connor Hoetzel
X-Men win their second Division 4 flag St Francis Xavier have avenged their preliminary final loss last year, rampaging home to win the VAFA Division 4 Premiership over Albert Park by 38 points. The best team for the whole year, the X-Men had lost only two games all season, both by less than a goal, and they weren’t about to let any chance of an upset on the day. Firing out of the blocks, St Francis Xavier kicked seven first quarter goals, while keeping Albert Park scoreless, as they set up a historic victory. Not stopping there, the X-Men kicked the first two of the second quarter, making it a total of nine goals before the Falcons could even register one. At the half time break, St Francis Xavier led Albert Park by a whopping 52 points, leaving themselves all but assured a premiership only halfway through the game. Albert Park fought back in the second half, but to no avail, as St Francis Xavier would find a way to score a goal every time the Falcons put two goals together, and in the end, a comfortable 38 point win for the X-Men will live long in the memories of everyone at St Francis Xavier Old Collegians. Two of the X-Men were able to cap off remarkable individual seasons with another fine display of footballing ability, as Division 4 leading goal scorer Harrison Coe (105 for the season) plugged in another five. Not to be outdone, OJ Meehan Medallist Daniel Chin put in a wonderful game, earning himself a place in St Francis Xaviers bests. Stephen Richards-Gill kicked one goal himself, but also had a season to remember, finishing equal fifth in the leagues goal scoring tally, with 47 goals himself. Marcus Coe, brother of Harrison, produced three goals himself, while Daniel Soeurream put in a performance that he won’t be forgetting anytime soon, being named best afield by the X-Men.
Albert Park were led by a resilient and trying Steven Hasselerharm and Matthew Corstorphin, while Hayden Turner produced two goals for the Falcons. Joshua Beets was a standout for Albert Park across the season, finishing fourth in the league goal kickers, with 59 off his own boot, while Thomas Wilson, who was in all-time form leading into the game, finished with 37 on the year, enough for eighth spot on the list. Thomas Wilson managed a spot among the bests for the Falcons, as he has done so regularly this season. Although St Francis are set to bid farewell to the VAFA as they join another football league, Albert Park will be conversely preparing for promotion next season, with all eyes looking towards 2020 and how well they fare in a higher division. For season 2020 in Division 4, Elsternwick will be one of the early favourites of the section, looking to replicate the St Francis Xavier platform of following a preliminary final loss with a premiership the following year. Interestingly, the past two seasons has seen the side losing the preliminary final going on to win the premiership the following year, with North Brunswick completing that feat in 2017/18 and now the X-Men in 2018/19. As St Francis have claimed their second Division 4 premiership, it is worth noting on both occasions they have had a player win the OJ Meehan Medal in the same year they have gone on to win the premiership, the first time occurring in 2011 with Dimitri Dimakopoulos taking the prize. Unfortunately for Albert Park, they are still searching for their first VAFA senior premiership in their long history, and they will look to build next season, this time in Division 3.

HOLMESGLEN U19 PREMIER premiership winning Cardinals, James Tarrant was the recipient of the Best on Ground Medal, while Connor Goodison stood tall with three goals. For Xavs, Tom Simmons was unstoppable up forward with four majors as teammate Thomas Mckay was adjudged best afield. Old Scotch listed Fraser Morrisby as their best for the day.
Four goals to one in the final quarter steered Old Scotch to a comfortable 23-point victory over Old Xaverians at Waverley Oval on Saturday 14 September 2019 in the Holmesglen U19 Premier Grand Final. The Cardinals scoreboard ascendancy proved too much for Xavs to overcome, despite them piling on four goals to Old Scotch’s one to cut the margin from 45 points to 23 points in the last quarter. 2019 HOLMESGLEN U19 DIVISION 1 Old Melburnians toppled the minor premiers, Old Brighton, by one point to be crowned the 2019 Holmesglen U19 Division 1 Premiers at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday 14 September 2019. It was a hard-fought tussle with lots of ebbs and flows, with four points being the biggest margin in the match at any break. With only a solitary point separating the two sides at the main break, Old Melburnians kicked four goals to the Tonners three to lead by four points at the final change. Both teams scored two goals apiece in the last term, and OM’s held on by the slimmest of margins come the final siren for the season. OM’s Oscar Dowd impressed with three goals, while Ben Branson (2) and Jordan Segar (2) shared four goals between them. Harry Bede was deemed the most outstanding afield, and awarded the BOG Medallion, but the officiating umpires. Best on Ground Medal: Harry Bede (Old Melburnians) 27

The match was tight in the first half and looked like it would continue into the second half, but the Rovers had other ideas with a monster six-goal third quarter to the Gryphons two. The Rovers were elite from then onwards, adding four goals to their already significant advantage on the scoreboard in the final term. Max Coughlin starred with six goals for the Rovers in a Best on Ground performance. For Old McKinnon/Glen Eira, Callum Drenth, Xavier Verdnik and Lachlan Roberton kicked two goals each. Claude Elsasser was the BOG for the Gryphons. Best on Ground Medal: Max Coughlin (Hampton Rovers)

THIRDS U23’S Old Xaverians completed a perfect undefeated season in the Thirds U23 competition after defeating St Kevin’s OB in the Grand Final by 71 points on Saturday afternoon. In perfect spring conditions at Waverly Oval, Xavs posted a compelling four goal to one opening term, and duplicated the same scoreboard pressure in the second to enter half time with a 39-point ascendancy. Led by BOG medallist, Matt Smith, and with able support from Harrison Kelly’s seven majors and the James’ (Agius and Hess) two goals apiece, Old Xaverians went on to outscore SKOB seven goals to two in the latter half to well and truly claim the first ever Thirds U23’s premiership title. For the defeated St Kevin’s, who overwhelmed Whitefriars (4th) by 70 points and Old Scotch (2nd) by 55 points en route to this final decider, four individual goal scorers added to the scoresheet, while Thomas Andriske was named his side’s best. Best on Ground Medal: Matt Smith (Old Xaverians)
THIRDS DIVISION 1 Caulfield Grammarians were named the 2019 Thirds Division 1 Premiers on Saturday 7 September 2019 after they beat De La Salle by 39 points at Box Hill City oval. It was a complete four quarter performance from the Grammarians, as they led from start to finish capped off with a five-goal final quarter blitz. From the opening bounce, the Fields were a team on a mission jumping out of the blocks with three goals and allowing De La to kick only three behinds. The second quarter was closer between the two sides with a goal each kicked. The Fields had a brief lull after the main break, held to three behinds, as De La kicked the only major of the third quarter. Heading into the final quarter, it was anybody’s match for the taking with 13 points in favour of the Fields, but the Caulfield side held firm thanks to Matt Ball who kicked four goals, and Harrison Mills who was named their BOG. Only managing three goals for the entire match, De La’s Jack Hanley was adjudged best afield with his one goal. Best on Ground Medal: Andrew Spittall (Caulfield Grammarians)
THIRDS DIVISION 2 Hawthorn were a class above Old Xaverians, winning the Grand Final by 35 points on Saturday 7 September 2019 at Whitefriars College to take out the Thirds Division 2 Premiership. The Hawks will be pleased with their 2019 Thirds Division 2 season, as they topped their minor premiership with silverware too. Old Xavs will rue inaccuracy in front of goal let them down, as they only registered five goals and 10 behinds. Hawthorn led at every change, with the standout quarter coming in the third term where they booted through six goals straight to Old Xaverians 1.4. With this dominant third term, Xavs trailed by 43 points heading into the fourth, making it hard for them to mount a comeback. In the last quarter, Old Xavs made the scoreboard look a bit more respectful winning the quarter 3.3 to the Hawks 2.1. Antonio Brizzi was the main target up forward for the Hawks with four goals. Best on ground honours was awarded to Mohammed Dabab of the Hawks. Best on Ground Medal: Mohammed Dabab (Hawthorn AFC) 29
THIRDS DIVISION 3 Williamstown CYMS ended up being too strong for fellow ladder leaders St Johns OC, winning by 19 points at Trevor Barker oval. In what was a low scoring grand final affair, seven goals were kicked between the two sides. The Jocks were held to only two goals for the whole match, with their kicking at goal letting them down with eight behinds. The Jocs were only able to break through with their first goal in the last term when they kicked two goals via Corey Ely and Matthew De Poilly. Christopher Curran was the only multiple goal scorer for the CY’s, with two with his teammates Zachary Read, Beau Coyle and James Farley kicking a goal apiece. Ely was the BOG for St Johns and CY’s best on ground honours went to Farley. Best on Ground Medal: James Farley (Williamstown CYMS)
THIRDS DIVISION 4 A consistent four quarter effort from St Mary’s Salesian has helped them secure the 2019 Thirds Division 4 Grand Final Premiership by 33 points over minor premiers, Kew, at Whitefriars College. The Saints came out all guns blazing in the opening term with three goals, while keeping the Bears to four behinds. In the second quarter, the Bears were finally able to break through with their first major, but the Saints still managed their control in the match adding another three goals. The second half was a tighter contest between the two sides. with the Saints only outscoring the Bears by a solitary goal. Nick Baxter was the standout forward for the Saints with three majors. Saints’ Ben Peschke was adjudged best afield honours. For the Bears, Chad Watts was the only multiple goal kicker with two to his name. Bronson Paech was the best player for Kew. Study one of Holmesglen’s industry-engaged sports degrees: BSM13 Bachelor of Sports Media BSPB16 Bachelor of Sport Business Alexie Beovich
Digital Marketing Specialist, Racing.com
My time in the Holmesglen sports degrees gave me the skills to immediately enter the sports industry upon finishing. Without the wealth of hands-on experience I received through degree-led internships and volunteer positions, I would never have had an opportunity to work with Hockey Australia. I’ve now transitioned to a Digital Marketing Specialist role at Racing.com where my focus is to drive commercial outcomes through digital assets. I continually reflect on the lessons learned at Holmesglen to overcome obstacles I face in the working environment, a testament to the alignment between the degrees and industry.
Ben Gibson
Digital Content Producer, Melbourne Football Club
The three years I spent studying at Holmesglen helped me develop a range of skills and prepared me to work in the sports industry. Through the support of the course, I was fortunate enough to complete internships with SEN / Crocmedia, Herald Sun and Fox Footy, gaining invaluable experiences and developing strong relationships along the way. Just prior to completing my final assessment, I secured a full time role as the Digital Content Producer with the Melbourne Football Club. It is incredible to be producing content for the team I grew up supporting.
Chloe Molloy
3rd Year student and Collingwood Football Club AFLW player
The opportunity with the internships I’ve secured with Fox Footy, Croc Media and Basketball Victoria is simply amazing and something I haven’t taken for granted. I have been able to transfer the skills into the workforce and contribute. Recently I worked at the AFL All Australian awards including producing footage that was used at the event along with other events. I have also had my byline on numerous articles published at SEN, which is great to build my portfolio of work. I wouldn’t have had these opportunities at any other education provider.
James Raknes
Account Manager – Partnerships, Melbourne Racing Club
In a career where there is a need for fast learning and expansive skills, I’m thrilled my experience at Holmesglen covered the complete set. I began with a goal to share my love of sport through writing. Holmesglen quickly taught me there was more to the industry than a byline. Sport as business, sponsorship and PR studies are just a small selection of subjects I refer back to on a daily basis. I’ll never stop learning and it was this course that helped launch my career.

UMPIRES CORNER Andrew Harnett – VAFAUA President
THANK YOU It doesn’t feel like long ago that the umpiring group assembled at Elsternwick Park to commence pre-season training, but here we are with another year in the bank and the long off-season ahead of us. The William Buck Premier Grand final marks the culmination of our year and it is a year that all umpires should be proud of. The demands on the umpiring group as a whole have never been greater as the VAFA competition continues to expand and many umpires showed their support by officiating in multiple matches when required to ensure all games were officiated to the highest possible standard. So now it’s time to say thank you to all who have helped make this year one to remember. Firstly, to the clubs, who welcome us week after week regardless of the result. The VAFA is a special place, with clubs warmly accepting us. A special note of thanks to the team managers who see that we are well looked after before, during and after matches. To George Voyage and the VAFA board, your support and promotion of umpiring as integral to the game of Australian Rules Football is very much appreciated, and to Nigel Credlin and the members of the Umpiring Sub-Committee, including Peta Olive, your work and assistance is of vital importance to us as we look to grow our numbers to keep pace with this fast growing competition. To the VAFA HQ Staff, we thank you for all your work behind the scenes to continue to make this the best competition to umpire in. Thank you to Brett Connell, who has led the competition from strength to strength and has taken a considerable interest in our group to ensure that the ties between the UA and HQ remain strong. Although he would shun the attention, Haydn O’Connor’s work as Umpire Operations Manager should not be glossed over. Haydn, from a personal point of view, I have seen you grow into a passionate and dedicated voice for umpiring within the walls of HQ and I look forward to us working together next season to continue to make this the best place to umpire. Our coaching staff also deserve a huge thank you. Led by Tony Hales, Ryan O’Shea and Bernie Jephson and ably assisted by Peter Marshall, Mark Gibson, Peter James, Guy Hexter, Asha Hinton, Andrew Leggo, Jack Punshon, Shane Herbert, Charlie May and Terry Gunn, I doubt there is a harder working group of coaches in community football. Along with the numerous observers that evaluate us on a weekly basis and assist in providing meaningful feedback to ensure that we can all be the best we can be. Also, it would be remiss of me not to mention Gavin De Kretser, who provided us with another year of meaningful and functional
trainings to keep us in prime condition for the most important games of the year. The final thank you, is the most important. To all of our families who have put up with us being absent every weekend, and a couple of nights a week for the last six months. For putting up with our aches and pains and dealing with our often boring umpiring conversations. And to the parents of our under-age umpires, thank you for providing transport to training and all parts of Melbourne. THE FUTURE So with season nearly done, we turn our attention to next year. Thank you to the out-going executive of Owen Hinson, Michael Gough and Mitsuo Nire, for guiding the UA to it’s current position of strength and stability. I hope that we can continue your legacy and continue to make this a great place to umpire. We are excited by the prospect of a number of our members looking to further themselves next year and trialling for the VFL. We have a strong history in this area and so we know we are going to lose some of our top talent. We will also be farewelling some umpires to retirement. We thank you for your years of service and encourage you to stay involved as a PUMP. As the competition continues to expand, we need to grow our numbers. If you are looking for a great way to keep fi t and earn a bit of tax free money on the side, umpiring is a fantastic way to do it. If you’re a player who is looking at hanging up the boots but wants to stay involved in the game, I encourage you to try umpiring like I did 10 years ago. It is one of the best decisions I have made and has allowed me to achieve more in football than I ever did as a player. So enjoy the break and I look forward to seeing you in 2020. How Good is Footy!!!!
William Buck Premier - Premier C Senior Grand Final Umpire Appointments: Haydn O’Connor - VAFA Umpire Operations Manager The William Buck Premier, Premier B & Premier C Senior Appointments were announced on Wednesday September 18, and were selected from the following (in alphabetical order); FIELD UMPIRES: Anthony Edmonds – After officiating the 2016 & 2017 Premier B and the 2018 Premier C Grand Final, Anthony again has completed his season ranked in the Top 9 umpires of the VAFA. A professional in his preparation & consistent in process, after joining from the EFL, “Eddo” is building a fantastic CV. Michael Gough – Since making the transition from YJFL in 2015 to the VAFA, Michael has had a steady climb, officiating the 2018 Division 1 Grand Final and continuing with a strong season to be ranked in the Top 9 for 2019. The outgoing VAFAUA Secretary continues to impress with his on-field composure and ability to blend into the game. Owen Hinson – The Field turned Goal turned Field Umpire career of the Ex-VAFAUA President has reached its highest point to date, officiating a Senior Grand Final on the last weekend of the VAFA competition. A fantastic example of having a sound knowledge of the laws and showcasing excellent team work, Owen is rewarded with a Top 9 finish after previously Field Umpiring the Division 4 Grand Final in 2016. Oliver Murray – After being appointed the 2018 Big V Women’s Rep Game & Premier B Grand Final, Oli has taken another step in his umpiring in 2019. Selected for the Big V B-D4 Representative Match in Perth, along with being named as the Golden Whistle winner & VAFA Most Promising Umpire in 2019, a career at higher levels awaits after this weekend. Matthew Oakley – After joining the VAFA from the VFL, Matthew’s resume’ currently reads at 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018 William Buck Premier Grand Finals, Umpire of the Year in 2016, 2018 & 2019 and Big V Senior Representative in 2018 & 2019. One of the best decision makers the Association has seen over recent times and if appointed to a 5th consecutive William Buck Premier Grand Final would put him in rarefied air amongst the esteemed history of the VAFA and VAFA umpiring.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2019
36
Jason Schilling – His first season with the VAFA after originally umpiring in the MPNFL, Jason also spent time at the VFL. After a couple of seasons away from the game, his addition has been for the betterment of the Association with his on-field composure. A father for the first time in 2019, “Schillo” has balanced new parenthood, with travel from the Peninsula every week to be one of the most outstanding recruits for the season and is truly deserving of his Top 9 finish. Vaughan Sidebottom – An experienced member of the Premier Squad, Vaughan returned last season to the VAFA full time, officiating the 2018 Premier C Grand Final. After hailing from the Goulburn Valley, and spending time on the VFL List, he has had another fantastic season to be ranked in the Top 9 again in 2019. Daniel Silfo – 2015 VAFA Umpire of the Year and William Buck Premier Grand Finals in 2011, 2015 & 2017, Dan continues to feature at the highest rung of the VAFA competition. After time with the VFL, he returned to the VAFA and has been a constant of the Premier Squad. A frustrating 2018 with injury, “Silf” has been able to umpire a full season in 2019 and has been rewarded with a Grand Final on the last weekend in the competition. Logan Webster – A product of the SMJFL, Logan was awarded the 2016 Golden Whistle, and since has gained experience within the VAFA Premier Squad, umpiring Senior Football for the past 4 years. Having umpired the 2018 Division 2 Grand Final, he has progressed to being a consistent performer in our Premier Divisions and is continuing his upward trajectory with a Senior Grand Final in the VAFA Premier grades. BOUNDARY UMPIRES (4 William Buck Premier, 2 Premier B, 2 Premier C): Henry Bennett, Shaun Bourke, Matt Gough, Ben Hodgart, Tom McInerney, Ben Myatt, Nick Obst, Vo Schofield.
