VAFA vs AFL VIC COUNTRY

In 2011, a fantastic secondment opportunity in America came up and while I was quietly petrified, I knew it would change my life. In just 5 months, I met an incredible range of people, and was really challenged professionally. I grew up more in that short time than in the 5 years prior – there’s no other situation where I could learn as much as I did so quickly. DOM MOLLUSO Audit Manager, William Buck

Old Rivalries Continue as

A New Chapter Begins

This weekend’s matches between the Victorian Amateur Football Association and AFL Victoria Country in the Under 19s and senior men’s represents one of the many storied rivalries in Australian Rules football; a rivalry that has provided spectators with one of the highlights of the football calendar for decades. This year, however, representative football represents much more than just the continuation of old rivalries, but also the building of a new one as the VAFA Women’s and AFL Goldfields will face off in the inaugural women’s representative match. Talented female footballers will be presented with the opportunity to participate at representative level and build a lasting rivalry of their own. The women’s match marks the turning of a new chapter, where 24 women from each side will have the chance to write their names in the history books of representative football and claim early bragging rights. While representative footy does determine who gets the bragging rights between the country and metropolitan counterparts, to many, especially those lucky enough to participate, representative football is about much more than just that. It provides communities with the chance to come together; a place for talented footballers to test their mettle against the best, to form lasting friendships that will continue long after the boots have been hung up, and ultimately, it presents players with one of the greatest honours in football, the chance to wear the Big V. The Big V is a jumper entrenched in the history of Victorian football and as each new player pulls the jumper on for the first time, they are representing the 92 years of footballers who have worn the jumper before them. VAFA v VIC Country 2017

To all those selected in their respective teams this weekend, we wish you the best of luck wear your jumper with pride and enjoy this opportunity to compete against the best talent community football has to offer. The weekend’s proceedings kick off at Frankston Oval on Saturday 8 July at 11:30am with the Under 19 Challenge Cup between Energy Safe Victoria Country Under 19s and the VAFA Under 19s. Last time they met, AFL Victoria Country proved too strong for the VAFA claiming a 44-point victory in 2016. With new inclusions to both sides, this year’s match-up presents spectators with yet another enticing affair that should be closely contested. Following the Under 19 game, at 2:30pm the senior men’s sides will take the field at Frankston Oval to compete for the Brian Molony Cup. AFL Victoria Country will be looking to hold onto the cup and maintain bragging rights over their metropolitan rivals after their 62-point victory in 2015. The VAFA will be eager to bounce back from their recent loss with a clear intent to restore return to the winner’s column and claim back the cup in the process. The final representative match for the weekend will be held on Sunday 9 July between AFL Goldfields and VAFA Women’s in the inaugural women’s match. The match will be held at Eureka Stadium in Ballarat as a curtain raiser to the VFL match between North Ballarat and Essendon. No doubt, both teams will be eager to impress and have their names etched in the history books by claiming the first ever win between the two competitions.

VAFA Presidents Report Throughout our 125-year history, the VAFA can proudly claim to be leaders and innovators in Australian Rules football. In this 125-year anniversary season, we take another leap forward in our representative football program with the history-creating first-ever Women’s Big V representative match against AFL Goldfields in Ballarat. By all reports the players have embraced the opportunity with unprecedented enthusiasm and passion. With competition for spots extremely high, we are looking forward to a first-class performance whereby those selected showcase the very best of VAFA Women’s. On behalf of the Board and Administration, I would like to congratulate the whole playing squad, coaches and volunteers who will be part of this history making match on Sunday. No matter the result, I am sure the Big V spirit will be on show. On Saturday, we have two big games against AFL Victoria Country with the U19 team kicking off proceedings and followed by the senior match.

We may see a contrast in game styles; the slick, fast running VAFA Big V team versus the stronger-bodied, longer kicking Country boys; all of which adds up to an intriguing contest which I am sure will keep both coaches guessing. On behalf of the VAFA, we welcome all involved in this weekend’s games and thank all the officials from both associations, volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to showcase our great games. Representative football is the pinnacle of our game; reputations are enhanced, careers are launched and legacies are established. However, above all else lifelong friendships and memories will be a bond that will link all teams and players forever. Go the VAFA Tim Nelson President Victorian Amateur Football Association

Of recent times, the Country senior team has got the better of the VAFA, winning eight of the 15 encounters between the two sides, stemming back 33 years to 1984. There have been many classic tight matches and I am sure both teams will be well prepared for a fast-paced and tough game where the most committed team will come out on top.

VAFA vs AFL VIC COUNTRY

AFL Victoria Country On behalf of AFL Victoria, I would like to congratulate players from both the Victorian Amateur Football Association and WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s affiliated leagues for being selected in your respective sides. Representing your region and donning the Big V jumper is something only a select few players will achieve and is an experience all players will remember long after their playing days are over. Held biennially, the 2017 Brian Molony Cup is set to reignite one of the longest-standing rivalries in community football as the best from the bush take on the best from the burbs, while the Under 19 Challenge Cup provides the next crop of community players with the chance to enhance their recruitment prospects into VFL and even potentially AFL programs. While Vic Country currently has bragging rights over the VAFA after defeating their metro rivals in their last encounters, spectators can expect another exciting brand of football as the top talent from Vic Country and VAFA go head-tohead.

their abilities at a higher standard and showcase their skills on one of community football’s biggest stages. We are pleased to be able to utilize the fantastic facilities at Frankston Oval today, which continues to service football at all levels, including VFL, TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls matches held at the venue this season. Ahead of today’s games, I would like to acknowledge the work of long time VAFA CEO Michael Sholly and his service to community football during his 12 years at the helm. We wish Michael well in his new adventures and welcome former AFL Victoria Community Football & Engagement Manager Brett Connell to the role in season 2017. I would also like to thank the many volunteers, including selectors and support staff who help make this event possible. Finally, I would like to congratulate the umpires from the VAFA and AFL Victoria’s V/Line Umpire Academy who have been selected to officiate today’s matches.

Our Vic Country coaches, Danny Frawley (Seniors) and Damian Sexton (U19) and their vast team of selectors have been hard at work trying to fit so many quality players into each of their teams.

The V/Line Umpire Academy was established to develop and coach talented young umpires and this experience at representative level will be an important step in their on-going development.

We are delighted to have the service of these two experienced coaches and I wish them luck in leading their chargers today.

92 Years of the Big V

Not only does 2017 mark the 125th year of the Victorian Amateur Football Association, but it also represents 92 years of the Big V. As we approach a century of representative football, and as part of the 125 celebrations of the VAFA, the 2017 senior VAFA side will wear speciallydesigned 125 year guernseys when they run out against AFL Victoria Country at Frankston Oval. The jumpers will feature the names of all 1454 VAFA players who’ve had the honour of wearing the Big V jumper at senior level. From Charlie Abbott to Trent Zimbachs, every player’s name from 92 years of Big V football will be running around with the selected 22 on Saturday.

match against the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL) at the MCG. Since 1925, the VAFA senior side has played 168 times and in that time the VAFA has won 137 matches, a winning percentage close to 82%. The average winning margin for the senior is 54 points and the longest streak of wins stretches 19 matches between 1962-1969.

The VAFA has a proud history of providing opportunities for its players to play representative football and there is no higher honour in rep footy than pulling on the Big V. The history of the Big V commenced in 1925 when the VAFA played its first representative 4

125 Years of the VAFA 2017 marks the 125th year of the Victorian Amateur Football Association. Established in 1892 as the Metropolitan Football League with 10 teams, the VAFA has stood proudly as the bastion of Amateur football in Australia. After the war, Melbourne’s leading business houses entered teams in the VAFA. All the banks, insurance companies and leading organisations were member clubs of the VAFA. If you were coming down from the country to Melbourne to work in a bank, immediately you would have been taken to the attached VAFA club. Again a new influx of community clubs into the VAFA would occur in the late 1980’s when older competitions, such as the Federal League and the church competitions, gradually merged to form competitions such as the Southern Football League. Many of these clubs took this opportunity to join the VAFA and are still playing in the various sections. Throughout the 125 years it has been the universities, churches and old schools that have provided most of the clubs. Currently, approximately half of the competition has links to a school whilst another 15% are partnered with a university. There were 10 foundation clubs who had

Led by a best-on-ground performance from former AFL midfielder Dean Polo and a seven-goal haul from full-forward Grant Weeks, Vic Country built on their 13-point half time lead by adding nine goals to two after the main break. The VAFA’s clubs, upon which the foundation of the Association is built, vary from one team to eight, with women playing alongside the men this year for the first time. Such has been the enthusiasm and dedication expressed from the footballing community, the VAFA now has 40 women’s teams, 36 clubs and more than 1900 registered women’s players. Our representative football program is a point of immense pride in the VAFA, and the privilege of wearing the Big V has been bestowed upon many, with opportunities extending from men seniors to our future stars in Under 19s and now to women seniors too. We wish the best of luck to all teams competing in their respective matches. Old Trinity midfielder Gabe Hamilton dominating the first half with four goals and a brutal display of tackling. After conceding the first three goals in the opening term, it was Hamilton who lifted VAFA by kicking two in a row before a monster 55m set shot from Sam Barnett after the siren levelled the scores at quarter time. Vic Country twice shot out to a 19-point lead in the second quarter but defiant goals via the boots of Joel Rice and Hamilton kept the VAFA within reach. While most of the play in the second term was controlled by Vic Country, VAFA defenders Harry Tinney and Josh Freezer stood up valiantly by acting as backboards and rebounding numerous forward thrusts. However, the 13-point half time deficit was the closest our seniors would get for the remainder of the match as Vic Country piled on six unanswered goals in the third and another three in the last. Notwithstanding the disappointing loss, the VAFA had standout performances from a number of players, including; Jack Bull, Marshall Rippon, Hamilton and Tinney. 5

History: VAFA vs AFL Vic Country The VAFA senior representative side will look to draw level in the head-to-head battle with AFL Victoria Country, formerly known as the Victorian Country Football League (VCFL), when they do battle on July 8 at Frankston Oval. The two sides share a competitive history with AFL Vic Country currently holding an eightgames-to-seven advantage over the VAFA, stemming back 33 years to 1984. Of their 15 clashes, the inaugural match took place at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo, where the Big V came home with a hard-fought 19-point victory. It was a game that set the tone for future battles, as the two teams were inseparable at five wins’ apiece after their first 10 encounters. In recent times, AFL Vic Country have had the

On the other hand, of the VAFA’s seven victories, four of the matches have been won by eight points or less, giving them an average winning margin of 18. The AFL Vic Country squad is made up of the best senior players across the state (excluding metro areas). This year’s contest will be no different, with eight different Victorian country football leagues expected to be represented, making the task for the VAFA quite challenging but as highlighted below, it is nothing they haven’t overcome before. Coaches Back to Back Stuart Powell

Stuart Powell returns to his role as the Senior Representative Big V Coach for the second consecutive season, having coached the Senior Big V side to a gallant 17-point defeat against the SAAFL in 2016. Powell will be keen to go one better this year when the VAFA comes up against AFL Vic Country at Frankston Oval and bring home the Brian Molony Cup which the Big V last held when they defeated the Country by three points in 2013. Powell’s close ties with the VAFA run deep, dating all the way back to 1998 where he played two seasons with St Kevin’s Old Boys in A Grade, before injury derailed a highly promising playing career. Following this, he focused his attention on the coaching aspect of Australian Rules. His occupation as the Director of Sport at Scotch College means Stuart is unable to fulfil the obligations required of a Senior Coach at Club level, but the representative program allows him to stay involved in some capacity, telling VAFA Media: “When Nigel Credlin (Former VAFA Director of Representative Football) approached me I just thought it was a really good fit for me being able to combine a few passions and obviously my work. “I’ve got a real love and passion for football and it’s a way of keeping me involved with the game.” The former AJAX, St Kevin’s Old Boys and Old Scotch senior coach brings over eight years of senior coaching experience and knowledge from previous rounds of representative games to the role. VAFA v VIC Country 2017

Danny Frawley

The former St Kilda star and current Specialist Defensive Coach will lead the AFL Victorian Country into battle against their the VAFA for the first time. Frawley’s CV includes; 240 AFL/VFL games, 177 of which he captained the Saints, St Kilda Best and Fairest in 1988, All Australian, regular member of the Victorian State of Origin team and an inductee into St Kilda Football Club Hall of Fame in 2007. As a coach, Frawley has attained roles as an assistant at the Collingwood Football Club, as well as his current role at St Kilda. Before returning to the Saints, ‘Spud’ was the CEO of the AFL Coaches Association up until 2014 but most notably for Frawley, he was a Senior Coach for the Richmond Football Club from 2000 – 2004, taking them to a preliminary final in 2001. In a recent interview, Danny expressed his delight in coaching the AFL Vic Country side, telling the Weekly Times: “I want to give the guys a really good experience.” “We know what country boys are like, we like to get out there and compete, so that will be our No. 1 thing, we just want to put our best foot forward with our competitiveness and I’m sure the boys who represent [AFL Vic Country] will do a really good job.” Frawley and his AFL Vic Country squad will be looking to retain the Brian Molony Cup, having defeated the Big V in the corresponding match in 2015.

VAFA WOMEN’S v AFL GOLDFIELDS

AFL Goldfields It is with great pleasure that AFL Goldfields welcomes everyone to Eureka Stadium for today’s inaugural women’s representative match against VAFA as a curtain raiser to the VFL match between North Ballarat and Essendon. Today we bring together the best players from our AFL Goldfields Female Football Division 1 and Division 2 sides, with representatives from the following regions: Ballarat, Riddell District, Maryborough & Castlemaine District and Geelong to take on the newly formed Victorian Amateur Football Association’s women’s representative side. Today’s match is a great concept and one that will no doubt showcase the best talent both Regions have to offer. A great deal of work has gone into getting today’s sides together and a lot of collaboration has been required to ensure we have a true representation of the talent across AFL Goldfields. We are very fortunate to have access to a range of excellent coaches who have been instrumental in the development of

12

today’s team. A huge thank you to the coaches, trainer, runner and team manager who have volunteered their time to make this day happen. For some of today’s competitors, it will be the highest level of competition they have played in their football careers to date. There is no doubt that the level of intensity will be another step up from your traditional grassroots matches and we are looking forward to seeing the best in each Region go head to head for the first time. Thank you to VAFA for accepting the opportunity to play in the first Women’s representative match and taking the trip down to Ballarat. Both Regions are looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the talent we have and hopefully extend the match into an annual event. Good luck to all players taking part in today’s matches, wear the jumper with pride. Krista Woodroffe Female Football Manager AFL Goldfields

VAFA WOMEN’S v AFL GOLDFIELDS

VAFA Women’s The rich history of the Victorian Amateur Football Association Big V gets even richer this Sunday when our first Women’s representative side heads up to Ballarat to take on a team from the AFL Goldfields. In the inaugural year of women’s footy in the VAFA it is poetic we head up to the Goldfields to stage this match at the newly developed Eureka Stadium. Ballarat was the centre of the gold rush in Victoria in the 1850s. It was a time when our distinctly Australian game evolved and was embraced by the gold rush colonials, reflecting the emerging democratic spirit and an ideal of equality and change. The camaraderie, mateship and loyalty developed by the men and women on the goldfields, are integral to our Australian national identity. These are also key sentiments to a successful representative side. Over the past few weeks the VAFA has brought together a group of talented young women from our 40 teams, many who have never played Australian Rules football before, and they have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to develop their skills, footy knowledge and forge new friendships. It was a difficult job to cut the initial squad, but all of the participants will go back to their respective clubs as leaders, having gained knowledge to enrich their club and

benefit our greater VAFA community. To pull on the Big V is an experience to treasure and we congratulate the 24 women who will be the first females to join an illustrious group of players from over 90 years of VAFA representative football. It is a long and proud history. We relish the opportunity for the players to test their ability at this level and for us to gauge where our fledgling competition is at. For these players it is an achievement to remember with pride. We are grateful to our coaching staff, lead by John Kanis, for their time and expertise. They are an experienced group who have collectively coached VAFA premierships, Intervarsity and in the AFLW’s competition. There are many other volunteers whose contribution we sincerely acknowledge. Also, congratulations to the umpires selected to officiate the match. Thank you to Krista Woodroffe and the team at AFL Goldfields for the opportunity afforded to our VAFA women. Good relationships developed through these events enhance the football community as a whole.

FL Vic Country: S. Dunstan 4, P. A Anderson 3, Jake Kelly 2, Angus Byrne 2, Dom Brew, Cody Grant, Shaun Mannagh, Matt Shannon, Riley Sharp VAFA: Mastromanno 4, Connelly 2, C Hughes 2, Blair 2. BEST AFL Vic Country: D. Smith, D. McMahon, D. Brew, T. Hanna, S. Dunstan, J. Kelly VAFA: McKenna, Carnovale, Tyquin, Mastromanno, Hill, Dance AFL Vic Country have won the last three encounters against the VAFA, their latest victory being by 44 points in 2016. It was a six-goal to one final term that clinched the deal for AFL Victoria Country who were within striking distance of the VAFA at three quarter time. The game started with VAFA Under 19’s attacking early and managing to kick the first goal of the game. However, for the remainder of the quarter, the VAFA failed to use the wind to their advantage and found themselves trailing by two points at quarter time. In the second term, Vic Country’s Sam Dunstan, who ended up being the leading goal kicker for the day, was unstoppable and played a major role in helping his team blow their two point buffer out to a comfortable 31-point lead halftime. With the wind in their sails, Chris Hughes set the VAFA

team alight in the third term and his hard work set up the opening goal of the quarter. Matt Blair backed Hughes’s good work up and kicked another for the VAFA team to claw ever closer to Vic Country. Alex Mastromanno also provided a key target up forward and helped reduce the margin to just two goals in favour of Victoria Country at the final break. Kicking with the wind again, Vic Country made few mistakes in the last, converting on almost all their opportunities to open up a game-high lead of 45-points and leave the VAFA team in their dust. The eventual margin would be a comfortable 44 points. As you’d expect, both teams had some strong performances, however, it was Dean Smith from AFL Vic Country who was awarded the Peter Knights Medal on the back of a dominant display in the midfield. As is the nature with Under 19’s representative football, there have been plenty of changes to both sides in 2017. In what is an historic year for the VAFA, all their new team members will be eager to impress and claim their first win against AFL Vic Country in a few years. For AFL Vic Country, they will look to build on the confidence gained from comfortable victories in previous years and extend their three-year winning streak. It’s sure to be a hotly contested battle between the two sides as we add another page to their storied rivalry.
