VAFA vs AFL VIC COUNTRY

Our family had a working relationship 40 years strong with William Buck. Their team really understood our business. Our biggest challenge in the last 5 years has been seeking finance as we executed our growth plans. Our advisors have been our greatest allies and outcomes have been significant – 30% increase in sales, financial stability and most importantly, peace of mind, which lets us sleep well at night. We now plan to double our turnover through a second redevelopment. So more fresh thinking will be in order. We know we’re in good hands. TIM RUGLESS Managing Director, Rugless Family Foodland

Old Rivalries Continue as

Welcome or Photo

This weekend’s matches between the Victorian Amateur Football Association and AFL Victoria Country in the Under 19s and senior men’s represents one of the many storied rivalries in Australian Rules football; a rivalry that has provided spectators with one of the highlights of the football calendar for decades. This year, however, representative football represents much more than just the continuation of old rivalries, but also the building of a new one as the VAFA Women’s and AFL Goldfields will face off in the inaugural women’s representative match. Talented female footballers will be presented with the opportunity to participate at representative level and build a lasting rivalry of their own. The women’s match marks the turning of a new chapter, where 24 women from each side will have the chance to write their names in the history books of representative football and claim early bragging rights. While representative footy does determine who gets the bragging rights between the country and metropolitan counterparts, to many, especially those lucky enough to participate, representative football is about much more than just that. It provides communities with the chance to come together; a place for talented footballers to test their mettle against the best, to form lasting friendships that will continue long after the boots have been hung up, and ultimately, it presents players with one of the greatest honours in football, the chance to wear the Big V. The Big V is a jumper entrenched in the history of Victorian football and as each new player pulls the jumper on for the first time, they are representing the 92 years of footballers who have worn the jumper before them. BIG V Representative Football 2018

To all those selected in their respective teams this weekend, we wish you the best of luck wear your jumper with pride and enjoy this opportunity to compete against the best talent community football has to offer. The weekend’s proceedings kick off at Frankston Oval on Saturday 8 July at 11:30am with the Under 19 Challenge Cup between Energy Safe Victoria Country Under 19s and the VAFA Under 19s. Last time they met, AFL Victoria Country proved too strong for the VAFA claiming a 44-point victory in 2016. With new inclusions to both sides, this year’s match-up presents spectators with yet another enticing affair that should be closely contested. Following the Under 19 game, at 2:30pm the senior men’s sides will take the field at Frankston Oval to compete for the Brian Molony Cup. AFL Victoria Country will be looking to hold onto the cup and maintain bragging rights over their metropolitan rivals after their 62-point victory in 2015. The VAFA will be eager to bounce back from their recent loss with a clear intent to restore return to the winner’s column and claim back the cup in the process. The final representative match for the weekend will be held on Sunday 9 July between AFL Goldfields and VAFA Women’s in the inaugural women’s match. The match will be held at Eureka Stadium in Ballarat as a curtain raiser to the VFL match between North Ballarat and Essendon. No doubt, both teams will be eager to impress and have their names etched in the history books by claiming the first ever win between the two competitions.

VAFA vs WAAFL

VAFA President’s Report The VAFA has the honour of welcoming the WA Amateur Football League to our door as we host the 2018 AAFC Championship Match. Set to be held at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday 7 July, this will be just the second time in history that the composite Big V side, which was initially C-D4 and is now Premier B – Division 4, will compete against the WAAFL; the first of which was 17 years ago in 2001. Though the rivalry between the Big V Premier B – Division 4 side and the WAAFL may be relatively fresh, as a whole, the Big V, including the Seniors, Premier B-Division 4 and Under 23s, has faced off against the WAAFL an amiable 27 times since their first encounter in 1936. From these outings, the Big V has won 22 times by an average margin of 57 points. To continue the theme of representative football, the Big V U19s will be travelling to MARS Stadium in Ballarat on Sunday 8 June to test their valour against the always competitive AFL Vic Country U19s. In their 17 game history, which begun in 1988, AFL Vic Country holds the upper hand having won on 10 of those occasions to the Big V’s seven. We witnessed an

There is no higher honour in Victorian representative football than pulling on the Big V, and I extend every congratulations to those select few who have the privilege of participating in our most revered level of competition. No matter how you look at the opportunity, the on-field experience you earn and the life-long benefits you reap from being part of representative football, be that the Big V or the WAAFL or AFL Vic Country, are simply un-paralleled. Like so many great things, the coordination and success of representative football, especially the Big V, does not come without meticulous planning and a steadfast commitment from a string of individuals. On behalf of the Board and Administration, we would like to thank all the individuals who have contributed to the occasion; our players, coaches, administration staff, volunteers and our community who support us. The VAFA community and I look forward to spectating these great rivalries in both the AAFC Championship match against the WAAFL, and the U19 Challenge Cup against AFL Vic Country, over the weekend.

VAFA vs WAAFL

WAAFL President’s Report The WA Amateur Football League is looking forward to taking on the VAFA in their home state and I am sure the game will showcase some great football. The West Coast Eagles State U23’s program has again provided players from across the WA Amateur Football League the chance to pull on the gold and black guernsey and represent their state. The trip to Victoria is not possible however without the hard work from numerous people. I would specifically like to thank all staff, officials and volunteers involved with the West Coast Eagles State U23s Amateur team for their time and commitment, and to the West Coast Eagles for their generous support of the WAAFL State program. Congratulations to the players who have been selected for today’s match and thank you to

the clubs who have supported the program to ensure it continues for many more years. I would also like to thank the VAFA for hosting today’s match and we look forward to returning the favour in the coming seasons. Sam Birmingham WAAFL President

VAFA vs WAAFL

LAST time they met A BRIEF HISTORY

Standing proud as one of the oldest community football competitions in the country, the Victorian Amateur Football Association has donned the Big V, one of the most well-known sporting jumpers in Australia, since 1925. The Big V tradition, which was later adopted by an array of other Victorian sports, is underpinned by the VAFA and their endeavour to provide their players the chance to partake in representative football. Meeting on home soil at Trevor Barker Oval, the VAFA look forward to welcoming their counterparts from the west on Saturday 7 July; the WA Amateur Football League Beginning in 1922, the WAAFL has grown from what started as a small six team competition to the largest single organised football league in WA. The WAAFL caters for players as young as sixteen years to provide a quality high standard competition whilst accommodating considerable volunteer personnel and social supporters. Though the VAFA has played the WAAFL 27 times since their first meeting in 1936, there has only been one occasion in 2001 where the WAAFL has played the relatively new Premier B – Division 4 Big V side, which was originally the C-D4 side. This composite Big V team was introduced in the 1980s when the VAFA saw the need to offer opportunities to players in lower sections to play representative football, given the league’s expansion. Whilst it is still possible for players from Premier B and below to play for the senior Big V, this team offers the chance to some star players that have stayed with their club despite having the ability to perform at the highest level. 4

Despite the anguish associated with travelling, it was the WAAFL who had the better start which begun with a five point lead at the end of the opening term. With accurate goalkicking on their side, WA extended their lead in the second quarter with four majors, all while restricting the Victorians to an erroneous 1.4. Faced with a 20 point deficit at the major break, the Victorians were roused into action by the coaching group, including senior coach George Voyage, which inspired them to boot four majors in the third quarter and level the playing field to 54 points apiece before the final quarter. With goal-kicking fiends Mooney (4) and Vaughan (3) dominant in the VAFA forwardline, and with the able support of Credlin (1), Liddell and Rogers, the Victorians ran out the match confidently in the fourth quarter to claim their first ever C-D4 Big V win over Western Australia. BIG V Representative Football 2018

VAFA vs WAAFL While they couldn’t claim victory in Victoria, the WA side were undeniably valiant in defeat. For their efforts on the day, the BOG honours were awarded to Johnston (1), Dobson (2), Southern, Quinn (1), Pires and Pratt. For the Big V, the

aforementioned Credlin (1), Liddell, Rogers, as well as Hosking, Martin and Cultrera (1), were particular standouts.

Coaches Back to Back WA Clint Testa

VAFA Russell Barnes

VAFA stalwart and Big V Champion, Russell Barnes, has been appointed coach of the Premier B – Division 4 representative side set to take on the Western Australian Amateur Football League on July 7. Russell is a well-known coaching identity among the VAFA community after stints with St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Aquinas, Old Brighton, Ormond and Hampton Rovers. His playing career is as good as it gets at amateur level, playing 255 games for Ormond during an era when they were considered one of the best sides in VAFA history. It will be the first Premier B – Division 4 side since 2015 when the VAFA went down to AFL Vic Country by 29 points at Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

Tim Nixon

CAPTAIN PROFILE Tim Nixon begun his VAFA career when he joined Caulfield Grammarians in 2009. In his 95 games at the club so far, Nixon has held a string of accolades to his name, the highlights of which would include winning the Caulfield Tootell Royals Medal in 2015 and 2017, his co-captaincy of the Caulfield senior’s since 2016, and being the runner up in the Premier C Best & Fairest GT Moore Medal in 2017. A small inside midfielder, who enjoys bagging the occasional goal, Nixon exudes leadership and is an outstanding role-model to his peers. BIG V Representative Football 2018

Coaches Back to Back David Kinsella

David’s playing days were at Old Melburnians and then at St Bedes Mentone under Luke Beveridge where he was a part of the history making 3 peat winning premiership sides in C, B and A section VAFA Football. As a coach, he has been involved with the VAFA Representative Football programme for the past five years as an assistant coach at U23 and U19 level. His ability to build relationships and a repour with his players quickly will give his side a good chance against a tough opponent in today’s game.

Charlie Thompson CAPTAIN PROFILE

Thompson played his junior football for Beverley Hills JFC in the YJFL before moving to Carey Grammar. He represented Vic Metro at u16 level before playing u18 football for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC cup. After missing out on being drafted at the end of 2017, he moved onto play for the Old Carey Grammarians in the VAFA aswell as for Richmond in the VFL.

Damian Sexton

Commenced playing for his local club Finley where he won a Senior Premiership in 1988. The following year he was recruited by GVFL club Yarrawonga and was a member of their 1989 Senior Premiership side. Recruited the following year by the Ken Sheldon coached St. Kilda Football Club in what was then the AFL’s “Mid Season” Draft, he played 4 games for the Saints but didn’t think much of “the big smoke” and returned home to Finley at the end of the 1990 season. Damian has represented both Vic Country and N.S.W. on many occasions and was named in the All Australian Team of 2000. He has been a senior coach of various clubs for over 14 years including his current appointment as senior coach of Yarrawonga. This is Damian’s tenth year as coach of the AFL Victorian Country Under 19 team with a record seven wins to his name.

Nic Carlon CAPTAIN PROFILE

Nic has played his entire career at his local club, EdithvaleAspendale in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. A “tough as nails - hard at it” backman with a penetrating kick, The 19 year old apprentice carpenter is a vital cog of senior Edithvale-Aspendale team who sit in 2nd place on the MPNFL ladder and are certainly premiership contenders. He has featured in all 12 games this season with solid contributions every week. This is Nic’s second appearance for the AFL Vic Country Under 19’s combination and he was a major contributor to the teams win last year. Nic has been appointed Captain of the 2018 Under 19 team due to his outstanding leadership skills both on and off the field.

For AFL Vic Country, who just proved too good on the day, it was Downie, Blood, Mannagh, Turnbull (1), Kelly (2) and Carlon who were named best in this outing. It’s sure to be a hotly contested battle between the two sides as we add another page to their storied rivalry.

SPIRIT OF THE BIG V AWARD: Tate Short BEST VAFA PLAYER: Tom Cameron On a fresh Saturday morning on 8 July 2018, both the Senior Big V and the U19 Big V sides hosted AFL Vic Country at Frankston Oval. It was the U19s who kicked off the day, as they showcased elite talent and determination to come from 23 points down at the last break and fell agonisingly short by just four points against the Country. A four-goal to one final term led by captain Tom Cameron (Old Melburnians) and Tate Short (SBMT) gave the U19’s their closest loss since last beating the Country in 2013. Vice-captain Alex Mastromanno was unstoppable when the ball entered the Big V’s forward 50, backing up his sensational start to the year at Old Brighton with five of the Big V’s nine majors. 2018 REPRESENTATIVE UMPIRES

Representative Umpires VAFA V WAAFL

FIELD UMPIRES Jarrod Hodge (WA)

Jarrod has been with the WAAFL for 14 years, umpired his first League game in 2006 and last year made his first “A” grade Grand Final appearance. In 2017 Jarrod received the Panel Umpire of the Year Award. His appointment to today’s state game is well deserved and reward for his perseverance over the years.

Marcus Middleton (VIC)

Having joined the VAFA after a career including stints at the SFL, AFL QLD, VFL & MPNFL that has fostered eight senior Grand Finals, Marcus has been a wonderful asset to the VAFA and has been rewarded with his first Big V Representative game after a fantastic start to the season. The VAFA Premier Umpiring Squad has certainly benefited from Marcus’ leadership and fantastic composure in big games.

Gavin De Kretser (VIC)

Gavin started his umpiring as a “Club Umpire”, helping out the Old Ivanhoe Football Club every weekend. Showing exceptional talent, he was earmarked and recruited to the VAFA ranks in 2015, where he has shown his fantastic knowledge of the game and been one of the most pivotal members of the VAFA Premier Umpiring Squad. This is Gavin’s second Big V game, following up from his 2017 VAFA v AFL Goldfields Women’s match.

VAFA V AFL VIC COUNTRY Henry Bennett (VIC) Having been a part of the VAFA since 2013, Henry is testament to the commitment shown by all umpires, having worked up the grades to now being an integral member in William Buck Premier every week. Starting in the U19s in his debut season, Henry has now progressed to this; his Representative Football debut.

Eric Dickson (VIC) Eric joined the VAFA from the Geelong Football League in 2018 having umpired two Senior Grand Finals. Eric has been a wonderful addition to the Boundary Umpires Squad with his experience of Senior Football, and this will be his first Big V Representative game.

Matthew Gough (VIC) After being coaxed into umpiring by his older brother Michael in 2017, Matthew has had a meteoric rise in the VAFA & VAFAUA community, debuting in the middle of 2017 and within the space of 26 games Matthew receives his first Big V appointment.

GOAL UMPIRES Alex Wolf (VIC)

BOUNDARY UMPIRES

Alex has been in the goals since 2013, and after an apprenticeship that has included a D3 Senior Grand Final, he has now become part of the Senior Panel. This is Alex’s first Big V Representative match after many years of consistent performances.

Dan Nguyen (VIC)

Edward Boal (VIC)

Dan joined the VAFA in 2017 and quickly rose the ranks to become an integral part of the Boundary Premier Squad. Having been a mainstay in William Buck Premier to date, and a key member at training, Dan is very deserving of his first Big V Representative game.

18

Eddie joined the VAFA in 2002, and after a short stint at the EFL, returned in 2014 and shortly after made his William Buck Premier debut in 2015. Since this appointment Eddie has taken his goal umpiring to the next level and now officiates his first Big V match.

FIELD UMPIRES Tom O’Connor (VIC)

Recruited from the Yarra Juniors and progressing from the VAFA Development Squad, Tom debuted in the William Buck Premier Division this season after winning the 2017 Best First Year VAFA Umpire. Subsequently he has taken his game to another level being and is an important member of the VAFA Senior Squad. This is Tom’s first Big V Appointment.

BOUNDARY UMPIRES Pranav Kalra (VIC)

A very vibrant member of the VAFA & VAFAUA community, Pranav is one of the most committed members of the Boundary Umpire Senior Squad. He has also taken his offfield commitment onto the ground, umpiring the Premier C VAFA Grand Final. In his fourth year at the VAFA, this debut Big V appointment is hopefully a sign of things to come in 2018.

Luke Myatt (VIC)

This is Luke’s second Big V appearance, umpiring the 2017 VAFA v AFL Vic Country U19s at Frankston Park. This led to Luke being rewarded with the Premier B VAFA Grand Final at the season’s completion. After a stellar start to 2018, Luke is set to take this appointment as a stepping stone to higher honours at season’s end.

GOAL UMPIRES Joel Bright (VIC)

Joel is in his second year at the VAFA and has been earmarked as one of the bright lights in VAFA Goal Umpiring, with an appointment in the U19 Premier Grand Final in 2017. With an extended focus on Goal Umpiring after dabbling in other disciplines, Joel’s talent has been rewarded with his first Big V appointment in this match against AFL Vic Country.
