Our family had a working relationship 40 years strong with William Buck. Their team really understood our business. Our biggest challenge in the last 5 years has been seeking finance as we executed our growth plans. Our advisors have been our greatest allies and outcomes have been significant – 30% increase in sales, financial stability and most importantly, peace of mind, which lets us sleep well at night. We now plan to double our turnover through a second redevelopment. So more fresh thinking will be in order. We know we’re in good hands. TIM RUGLESS Managing Director, Rugless Family Foodland

Brett Connell - VAFA CEO
Whether your club or team is involved in finals or your season has finished up, planning is imperative.
which will assist clubs in addressing their needs in terms volunteer recruitment, retention and recognition.
We all love to know where we are going and importantly how to get there, whether it’s planning an assault on your respective premiership or just as importantly planning for 2019.
Risk management and compliance was also an area of concern for clubs, although what was encouraging was that just over 50% of our clubs have a risk management plan in place, with specifically requested areas of assistance for clubs being trainers and coach accreditation, Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), food handling and other LGAs (Council) requirements.
Last Monday we completed our second night of club forums. Held at the VAFA’s new headquarters, we had 80 people attend across two Mondays to i) discuss the club survey results and ii) plan a way forward to support VAFA clubs. Back in July we spoke to the survey at a high level outlining key take outs be they opportunities, threats or specifically related topics i.e. planning, financial management, risk management & compliance, volunteers, development & community. To take a snapshot of the evenings there were a number of key themes. Planning, while obviously a key to success, can be a challenge with around 50% of our clubs either without a strategic plan or in the process of developing one. A key takeout is that we facilitate strategic planning sessions for those clubs in need between now and Christmas – a work in progress, however a key performance indicator for the VAFA in terms of club assistance, stay tuned. Not surprisingly, volunteers, or distinctly a lack of, is a major threat to our clubs, as are closely related themes of player retention and financial stability. Easing the burden on volunteers is a major focus, as is how we attract, recognise and retain these individuals who underpin our clubs. Our focus also in the last four months for the year will be to run a number of volunteer workshops
AFL Victoria Football Development Managers (FDMs) are key contacts in relation to coach accreditation, the VAFA will work with clubs on the trainers’ accreditation front and local LGAs should be the first port of call for clubs seeking assistance related to other compliances. The major compliance risk identified was the new Child Safety Standards, which are law and require extra diligence on behalf of all community clubs. The aim is to provide a forum(s) for clubs specifically related to Child Safety Standards so we are aware of our responsibilities as an Association and what’s required of our clubs before the end of the year. A copy of the full club survey will be distributed to clubs within the next week, along with additional information and notes from the nights. We will also post copies on the VAFA website. We would like to thank all clubs who completed the survey and attended the evenings. The VAFA is committed to supporting all of our clubs via our own administration team and the associated FDM network, and we look forward to setting a path for future sustainability for all of our clubs across the VAFA. See you at the footy.

PLANNING IS THE KEY FROM HERE ON IN
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
Nick Armistead
FOUR TEAMS, THREE WEEKS, ONE FLAG If anyone needed a reminder of the tight-knit nature of William Buck Premier, they need only look at the fact University Blues were 11 points away from relegation yet managed to finish fifth on the ladder. Less than two goals separated one of the most talent-riddled lists from safety and a return to Premier B, highlighting what an incredible home and away season we’ve witnessed in our top tier. In what eventuated as the ultimate ‘relegation battle’, Uni Blues proved too strong for Old Scotch as they ran out 10-point winners at University Oval. With whispers circulating of De La Salle’s dominance down at Brindisi St Oval, both sides knew they needed to bank the four points to avoid Premier B. It was the Blues who held off a second-half charge from the Cardinals where they reduced a 31-point deficit to single digits, before the home side’s stars stood up and solidified their position in William Buck Premier for 2019. Kieran Harper kicked three goals for the Blues, while Ayce Cordy and Tom Quinn continued their impressive form. Scotch ruckman, Josh Tilley, suffered a head knock early in the match and played no further part, allowing Cordy to dominate stoppages and give his midfielders first use. Jack Bull starred for the Cardinals, while Thomas McKinley proved dangerous and nailed a sensational snap midway through Scotch’s third term renaissance. Avoiding an immediate return to Premier B continually got tougher as the season progressed for Scotch after they lost their first seven games in a row by an average of just 11.8ppg. They lost Nick Jamieson to injury in the back half of the year and seven of their 12 losses were by 15 points or less. No team enjoys dropping a section but, on the flip side, they now have the chance to come back into the VAFA’s premier competition with their first senior flag since 1978. The Blues are another story altogether, by their own admission underperforming this season after adding players the ilk of Ayce Cordy and Tim Harper to their stocks. Five losses by five points or less and a draw against Trinity was the theme of the Blues’ year as they found themselves in matches but struggled to see them out until the final siren. Luck and injuries certainly play a part but, at the end of the day, the history books will show them as the fifth-ranked side of 2018. De La Salle avoided relegation in the most 2
@NickArmistead emphatic fashion possible, defeating SBMT by 85 points with 37 scoring shots to 12. Lachlan Walker, Tom Humphrey and Brodie McLaughlin starred for the La Sallians as they recorded their first win at Brindisi this decade. Injuries and unavailability’s hit De La as much as the next side this season, but the positive is the senior match experience gained from young guns Geordie Nagle, Liam Murphy, Lachlan and Andrew Walker, and McLaughlin. Paul Satterley announced he was stepping down as senior coach after five years at the helm which is an outstanding effort by anyone’s measure. The Tigers were resigned to relegation one week prior but finished their campaign with four wins. Again, VFL commitments meant weekly changes but they had genuine season-long standouts; including, Michael Barnes, Josh Cowan and Kye Beveridge. As is tradition in our great competition, both sides came together post-game to form a guard of honour for retiring stalwarts James Tyquin (SBMT) and David Lowe (De La) after each gave years of service to their respective clubs and the VAFA. Fellow De La star Matt Fieldsend, who won the 2009 Woodrow Medal alongside Lowe, also announced his retirement after battling injury for most of the season. While all these relegation battles were taking place, St Kevin’s OB quietly went about claiming the minor premiership for the second year in a row after they defeated Old Melburnians by 83 points at TH King Oval. Six goals to Billy Kanakis solidified the goal kicking award for the SKOB forward, finishing the year with 53 and proving the prophetic prowess of Anthony Lynch who made the prediction on the Round 1 edition of the VAFA Podcast. Nick Wood and Michael Di Natale made their return to the side and they are set to regain Lachie Sullivan for finals after Footscray finished ninth in the VFL. Mitch Brown was best afield for the second week in a row as the stars continue to align for SKOB on their quest for back-to-back flags. OMs entered the game free of stress after cementing their spot in William Buck Premier one week earlier. Josh Freezer was named their best for the fourth time this season. From his 17 games, Freezer has been in the best 11 times and should poll well in both the Woodrow and Coaches MVP. OMs finish the season in eighth spot with seven wins but keeping in mind Blues had seven in fifth. Old Trinity claimed their second top four scalp THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

in the space of four games after they defeated Collegians by three goals at Harry Trott Oval. Trailing by 14 points at three quarter time, the T’s exploded with five unanswered goals in the final term. Alex Polidoros has hit a genuine purple patch as he kicked five goals, while Gabe Hamilton was best afield. The T’s have won four games in a row entering finals beginning with their Round 15 demolition of Brighton. They will, however, enter next week’s elimination final without Hamilton after he accepted a two-game prescribed penalty for striking. The Lions lost top spot to SKOB following the defeat but will be comfortable with the performances of George Burbury, Viv Michie and Lachie Ferguson heading into the business end of the year. Kenny Ong played his first senior game for the season after one week in the reserves, while Hugh Johnson impressed yet again.
by 19 points at Toorak Park. Excitement machine, Anthony Zimmerman, booted four goals for the Tonners and Nick Pavlou returned to the line-up with a BOG performance. The Tonners haven’t strung two wins together since R13-14 but claimed the scalp of Collegians just three weeks ago. They’ve been the fairy tale story of 2018 after winning last year’s Premier B flag, and their match-up with Old Trinity at Elsternwick Park is primed as the game of the season. Old Xaverians ended their campaign celebrating the 250th game of star forward Matt Handley. Chopper booted four goals to end his season with 48 and in second spot on the goal kicking leader board. It was an interesting season to say the least, with a change of coach and the regular threat of finals ending in a seventh-placed finish they set their sights on 2019. TIPS St Kevin’s OB v Collegians

HARD ACT TO FOLLOW: TOP DOGS AND THE CHASING PACK What a week to set the tone for the St Bernard’s finals campaign in Premier B. The club solidified their minor premiership title with an emphatic 154-point win over Ajax, their spearhead in Chad Jones kicked his 100th (and 101st) goal, and their U23’s side in Thirds Section 3 won the premiership flag on Sunday morning – talk about a hard act to follow! Other than percentage improvements and reductions, little changed in this competition’s ladder following the eighteenth and final round of the home & away season. Led by Keegan Stewart (6), Nathan Page (3) and Will Barker (3), Caulfield Grammarians solidified their third finals berth in three years (2016 & 2017 – Premier C) with a fifth consecutive win over 6th placed Parkdale Vultures, while the afore mentioned Snow Dogs confirmed Ajax’s relocation to Premier C in 2019 with their 25+ goal win at Gary Smorgan Oval. appreciated, confidence boosting win when they took care of Monash Blues (8th) by 63 points at home. Perhaps spurred on by the success of their Thirds side, who took out the Section 5 premiership flag on Sunday afternoon, the Blues will be thrilled to reboot their campaign in the Premier B competition next season, an outcome which looked nigh on impossible considering they loitered in relegation territory for 15 of the 18 rounds this year. The same fate cannot be shared with Mazenod (10th) as their tough season was finally put to bed via a 113-point deficit to the finals destined University Blacks. The Blacks flaunted their stamina and depth in talent in the final term, with the likes of Joel Ernest (4), Luke Seviour (3), John Vrodos (3) and Angus Locke (3) putting on a goal-kicking masterclass. Though they finished their season on an unmistakeable high, putting Old Haileybury (7th) to the sword by 29 points and sending off AFL gun and Beaumaris legend, Stephen Milne, with a bang, the Sharks find themselves sidelined by way of percentage from a 2018 finals appearance in Premier B.

The Blacks hold ascendancy in these side’s head to head clashes to date, winning in both Round 6 and Round 13 by 14 and 35 points, respectively. In their Round 6 encounter, only a solitary goal separated the two sides at the first interchange; a telling sign of the close battle which ensued. The Blacks, led by Jordan Quaile (1) and Campbell Moorfield, had an impressive 19-point lead heading into halftime which could have been greater if not marred by missed opportunities (3.7). Though the Fields intensity, led by Jordan Stewart (4) and Declan Reilly, was clear to see, highlighted in the fourth term when they outscored the home side 4.4 to 3.2, the polished Blacks never relinquished their advantage. Fast-forward to Round 13, and a similar story of middle-of-the-game dominance unfolded for the Blacks at Glenhuntly Oval. Though the scoreline was relatively even early in the piece, a telling “premiership” quarter in the third, where the Uni boys pilled on 60 points to the Fields 1.2, sealed the games fate despite the gallant efforts of both Keegan (2) and Jordan (2) Stewart.
There are just two blemishes to the otherwise perfect St Bernard’s and Old Carey 2018 campaigns, and one of those losses can be accounted for by the other. In Round 2, it was the Panther’s who wrangled victory by way of a blistering final quarter which saw them 38-point victors. With 53 a-piece at three quarter time, it was a remarkable feat to see Old Carey keep the Snow Dogs scoreless, and bring it home so convincingly, in this top of the table clash. Guy Dickson and Kristian Jaksch iced the game in the fourth, scoring the final two goals of the match to earn themselves four and two goals apiece, while Henry Schade was excellent off half-back. Shaun Clarke was instrumental in the ruck for St Bernard’s, as was Conor Riley who was damaging in the midfield. Fast-track to Round 10, and the Snow Dogs exacted revenge at the Snake Pit. St Bernard’s were on song early, nabbing an 11-point lead at the first break which they built to 45 points at halftime and 76 points at the end of the third. The Panthers showed fight in the fourth term, outscoring the home side 4.2 to 3.1, but the top dogs proved too good. Competition sharpshooter, Chad Jones, had an absolute field day booting eight majors, while Old Carey’s Jason Ashby (1) featured in the best for the sixth week in a row, this time in the top position, while Tom Jepson and Will Nichols (1) were also good.
PLAYERS TO WATCH University Blacks: Lochie Dornauf and Hugh Curnow Dornauf has had absolute ‘field’ days in the Blacks matches with 4th placed Caulfield so far in 2018. On both occasions, Dornauf has earnt the BOG honours for the prevailing University side by way of a six-goal haul in Round 6, as well as a very commendable four majors in Round 13. Curbing Dornauf’s influence will go a long way if the Fields are to cause the upset, though plenty of others donning the Blacks jumper, like Hugh Curnow, have an affinity for goals (Lachlan Huntington, John Vrodos, Joel Beasely). Caulfield Gr: Tim Nixon and Keegan Stewart Club captain and Big V B-D4 captain, Nixon’s onfield leadership and unwavering work rate around stoppages could really break this elimination final open for the Fields. This can especially be the case with able support from Keegan Stewart up forward, the Fields leading goalkicker who is coming off a game-high bag of six majors in Round 18. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018
PLAYERS TO WATCH St Bernard’s: Chad Jones and Adam Bentick With 101 goals from 15 games, need I say more about Jones? The Snow Dogs have had fantastic depth to their line-up this season, which means a number of standout players can really have an effect in this semi. With his faithful track record against the Panthers in mind, I’m tipping Bentick to break things open. Old Carey: Kristian Jaksch and Henry Schade Jaksch really bolsters the Panther’s line-up, and his presence around goals is quite unmissable. Since returning from injury, Jaksch has been back to his unfailing form, notching three, four and four majors each week since from Round 16. Schade plays a massive role across half back in the Panther’s camp, and is a key factor in his team’s #2 defensive ranking, averaging only 60 points against each week. 5

ROYS AND WELLERS READY TO RUMBLE, OGS MASTER MINOR PREMIERS Fitzroy FC will go into the final series confident they can close tight matches after a stirring two point victory over PEGS Football Club at Brunswick St Oval on Saturday. The Roys remained in control over the first half, leading by 21 points at quarter time and holding on for a slim seven-point margin at the main break. The Bombers responded with a solid third-term effort to steal a nine-point lead by three quarter time, but it was the Roys who held their nerve and kicked towards a two-point win to end the season. Fitzroy’s Max Ellis and Sam Baker each kicked three goals for the winning side, while Thomas Cheshire also stood tall. Four players kicked two majors for the Bombers, including Adrian Romanyk who takes out the competition’s leading goal kicker award this season with 61 majors, 10 ahead of runner up Adrian Del Monte of Old Ivanhoe. The Roys finish in the top two and will boast the coveted second chance in finals, while the Bombers season comes to an end in 8th. Old Geelong showed that Williamstown CYMS are in fact very beatable as both teams head into the final series, with the OGs upsetting CY by 48 points at Como Park. CY took the lead early, before the OGs kicked five second quarter goals to take a lead which they never gave up. Ultimately though, it was CYs inaccuracy in front of goal that proved detrimental, with the visitors kicking 9.17 to the OGs very straight 19.5. Will Sloss earnt Best on Ground honours for the OGs, with Christian Hatzis slotting five majors and Matt Bird and Scott Dixon each chipping in three. Ben Gray was the only multiple goal scorer for CY with three majors, while William Chan also impressed. The OGs finish the season in 3rd, while CY claims the minor premiership. Peninsula’s season came to a disappointing end after Old Camberwell delivered a 104-point thrashing at Gordon Barnard Reserve. While the Pirates were able to contest in the majority of the quarters, it was eight unanswered goals from the Wellers in the third 6
term that did the most damage. Peninsula was even able to outscore the Wellers in the fourth term, in what would have been some little victory, but ultimately proved futile. Old Camberwell’s Nicholas Adamson was again the star with seven goals in a Best on Ground performance, while Nick Latsas (5) and Sam Boyce were also dominant forces for the victors. Alex Wood kicked two goals for the Pirates, while Shaun Payze and Mikey Mclellan fought hard in trying circumstances. Peninsula finish 9th for the season, and unfortunately will be relegated next season, while the Wellers finish 4th and will have the chance to contend for the premiership. Old Mentonians late season form continued into the last round with a 44-point win over St Mary’s Salesian at Keysborough Playing Fields. Dominant first and third quarters from the Panthers proved the difference, with the home side kicking six goals to two in each of these terms. The Panthers’ Darcy Brown, Lachlan Boyd and Keiffer Smith-Cameron each found the goals on three occasions, while Bryce Damin was awarded Best on Ground honours. Manny Dolan held the fort down forward for St Mary’s with five majors to his name, while Jake Kidman was the Saints best in his first senior game of the season after coming up through both thirds and seconds this year. The Panthers finish 7th overall for the season, after fear of relegation only a month earlier, though it will be relegation for the Saints who finished with the wooden spoon this season. Marcellin OC finished their season in high spirits with a 52-point win over Old Ivanhoe at Marcellin College on Saturday. With the contest fairly even in the second half, it proved to be the first half, where the Eagles outscored the Hoers 13 goals to five, which sealed the victory. Isaac Nolan and Adam Tomaro starred down forward for the Eagles with five and three goals respectively, while James Robertson was judged best afield. Hoers’ Kane Veliou THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

kicked three goals in his first game in the seniors side after playing a number of games in U19’s this year, and was duly awarded best honours for the defeated. Sam Geilings played his last game for Old Ivanhoe after playing 220 games in the brown and white, with the Hoers finishing in 6th this season, just behind the Eagles who ranked 5th.
22-point win in Round 17. With both sides known as the teams to beat this season, with CY only losing two matches and the Roys only narrowly behind with three losses, it could be anyone’s game.
PREVIEW
Similar to the first final on Saturday, both sides will also go into the match having beaten the other, with OG 19-point winners in Round 4 before the Wellers responded with a 14-point win in Round 10. Both OG and the Wellers sit close together on the ladder with 12 and 11 wins respectively, though each team has lost and won matches they weren’t expected to at times throughout the season.
With the final round of the Premier C home and away season complete, four teams now remain in the hunt for the coveted premiership cup. Williamstown CYMS will play Fitzroy FC at Bill Lawry Oval on Saturday for the first spot in the grand final. Both sides have faced each other twice this season, with the Roys 45-point victors in Round 7, though CY returned the favour and levelled the score with a comfortable

JONES & CLOKE BAG THE BIG 100 St Bernard’s star, Chad Jones, achieved the centurion (100) goal accolade on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a goal-square dribble, in the club’s Round 18 clash with Ajax. Jones managed to bag six majors in the outing, extending his season tally to an incredible 101 goals from just 15 games. The VAFA proudly boasts two 100+ goal kickers in the home & away season in 2018 in Chad Jones (St Bernard’s, Premier B) and Aaron Cloke (Oakleigh, Division 1). Cloke, the Krushers spearhead, notched an incredible nine goals against Therry Penola in Round 18 last weekend to take his season tally to an enormous 102 majors.
PROMOTION BOUND: OUR DIVISIONAL SIDES READY FOR GREATER CHALLENGES IN 2019 With week one of the Division finals done and dusted, four teams have already locked away their place in their section’s ultimate decider next weekend, as well as booked their ticket to greater challenges in the section above for season 2019. Ormond (2nd) toppled Hampton Rovers (1st) in Division 1, and will look forward to Premier C action in 2019, whilst UHS-VU’s victory in Division 2 will see them promoted to Division 1 next season; the first time the club has been there since 1978. The Division 3 minor premiers, Glen Eira, are set for grand final action and a 2019 season in
16
Division 2 after the narrowest of victories (1 point) over Hawthorn AFC, and North Brunswick will be thrilled to move up to Division 3 after an 18-year stay in Division 4. All the best to these clubs in their grand final appearances next weekend, and for their 2019 season in a new section of the VAFA competition!

In his first two years at the club, Ed played in the U19s preliminary finals in both 2011 and 2012. He made his senior debut in 2013 and was in the reserves grand final team that finished runners up. In 2015, he again played in the preliminary final with the reserves. All of his finals history changed for Ed when he was a member of the 2017 Thirds Gold Premiership side. Ed has become a spearhead for the Gold team and this year won the Premier Thirds leading goal kicking award with 55 goals.

Congratulations to St Kevin's Old Boys GERARD GLEESON - A true champion of SKOB, Gerard has achieved numerous milestones after commencing with SKOB in 2012. A promising player with the Sandringham Dragons, Gerard launched onto the SKOB scene as a 18 year old playing with the Senior team in 2013. Richmond VFL came calling in 2014/15 limiting his appearances with SKOB, but he was on hand to play a major role in the 2015 Premier B Grand Final win. Gerard’s career at SKOB has gone from strength to strength and in 2017 he tied for the Best & Fairest in the Seniors during their historic William Buck Premier premiership season. He has represented the VAFA Big V on five occasions, including 2014, and again each year from 2016-18.

Congratulations to St Kevin's Old Boys JULIAN GAMBARO - Julian joined SKOB in 2012, playing nineteen U19 games that year which included finals football. He moved up to the ressies in 2013 and 2014 where he was leading Goal Kicker both years! Julian was instrumental in ensuring the team reached the finals in both 2013 & 2014. He missed the 2015 season but is back, playing great football for the club with the Thirds Gold in 2018.

Congratulations to St Kevin's Old Boys LUKE McDONNELL - Luke joined the SKOB U19s in 2010 and had a great season with the team finishing at the penultimate hurdle - going down in a preliminary final. The same fate befell Luke in 2011, but he stuck at it, plying his trade with the reserves and then thirds teams for the next few seasons - reaching another preliminary final in 2016. The breakthrough finally came for Luke last year when he was part of the Premiership winning Thirds Gold team. We wish Luke all the best for his next 100 games for the club.

Congratulations to St Kevin's Old Boys NELSON PRYOR - Nelson began with the St. Kevin’s Old Boys playing for the U19s in 2012. In his third year with SKOB, he was an integral part of the Thirds Premier C 2014 Premiership team. Nelson then won back to back premierships as a member of the Premier Thirds team in 2015. A popular figure at SKOB, we wish Nelson all the best for his next 100 games.
100
Congratulations to St Kevin's Old Boys PAUL DI NATALE - Paul first played with SKOBs back in 2011 with the U19s. He has played most of his football with the Thirds, including three grand finals. We wish Paul all the best to make it four this season! Paul and the Di Natale family are key figures within the SKOB community helping out wherever possible to ensure the club remains successful.

RISING STAR
GRILL’D RISING STAR LUKE SEVIOR (University Blacks) Luke was recruited from Assumption College Kilmore and came to University Blacks as he began his university degree. Plays like Josh Kennedy at the contest. Strong bodies and clean hands in close, mixed in with outside running ability of Mark Blicavs. His strengths are his running capacity, competitiveness, along with decision making. As the captain of the under 19’s, Luke has shown exceptional leadership qualities and has risen to the challenge of inspiring his team mates both through words and actions. In his 4 senior and 1 reserves game he has looked more comfortable and has had genuine impact at senior level. Regularly hitting the scoreboard.

ALL OVER FOR THERRY PENOLA, ORMOND BOOK THEIR SPOT IN PREMIER C The weather gods could not have been kinder, providing a beautiful, finals-announcing Saturday for Ormond and Hampton Rovers to strut their stuff on the verdant expanses of Elsternwick Park. The Monders, relishing the benign spring conditions, carried on from where they left off last week and had the Rovers on the ropes with still a quarter to play.
unassailable position. Hampton Rovers also had a trio of dual goal scorers - Matthew Rienets, Richard Atkins, Anthony Folino - and indefatigable triers in James Prosser, Liam McCartney and Kyle Pinto. Two wins and a draw from three meetings now gives Ormond an irrefutable, confidence-boosting edge over the Rovers, should they be fated to lock horns one more time in the premiership decider.
Sunday dawned with cloud cover and a cooler temperature for the elimination clash at Northcote’s Bill Lawry Oval, where the Krushers and the Lions squared off to stay alive in the flag and promotion race. Therry Penola deserve admiration as they engineered a massive turnaround from their 106 point flogging a week previous, ultimately failing by the most exiguous of margins. For Oakleigh, the amazing run - and the dream stays alive.
Sunday’s first semi was going to require a phenomenal improvement from Therry Penola were they even to mitigate, let alone orchestrate retribution for, the embarrassing hiding Oakleigh had handed them the week before. Limiting Aaron Cloke to a respectable number was a priority mission, and one at which they failed as he bagged another haul of eight, although that output was largely nullified by five to Jarryd and three to Jordan Bannister. The Lions’ early intent was palpable, as they peppered the goals in the opening quarter but unearthed another unwelcome enemy - inaccuracy - and, despite nine shots to four, had no lead to show for it. And that came back to haunt them in the ensuing quarter, as the Krushers banged on seven goals to one, with Luke Pappon and James Hunt joining their indomitable spearhead in setting up what at that stage had the harbingers of another rout. Mitch Trimble and Jedd Taylor were among a number of Lions who had other ideas, sparking a frantic thirdquarter six goal to one revival that set up the match for a breathtaking finish. As they’ve done so often during their barnstorming run, Oakleigh once again found a way to hold on oh so narrowly, in no small part due to the resilience of Pat Ioannidis, Nick Seel and the remarkably reliable Liam Gillard. It was a gutwrenching finale to the season for the likes of Jarrod and Brock Egglestone and Justin Crotty, who tried their absolute hearts out for Therry Penola.
The second semi had, as usual, the double carrot dangled in the countenance of the eventually successful club. Win, and promotion is guaranteed. Win, and a grand final appearance beckons. Ormond had set the standard with their meritorious (albeit narrow) victory the week before, and played throughout as if they believed they had the Rovers’ measure. It was tough, tight and uncompromising early, Christian Carnovale and Anthony Folino busy for Hampton, Jeremy Simon and Jake Lever pressing for the Monders, who edged to a 14-point half-time lead after the teams had been deadlocked at the first break. Then the decisive move came, as Ormond put the foot down with a six goal to one third stanza, leaving the Rovers with an unsurmountable recovery mission to perform in the last 25 minutes. Jack McCartney, Travis Hine and Sam Mason shared in the goalkicking spoils with a pair each, and it was the impetus provided around the ground by Max Kennedy and Chris Coghlan that manoeuvred the Monders to a virtually 32

PREVIEW: The action shifts to Sandringham’s Trevor Barker Oval for the much anticipated preliminary final, focussing on two teams with very different paths leading to this showdown. It would mean unimaginable heartbreak for the Rovers to lose this, having set the pace all year and only once surrendering ladder leadership (albeit briefly, to Ormond after a hiccup in Round 12). The last meeting between these teams occurred in Round 15, and was also the last time Oakleigh tasted defeat. That day, the Rovers jumped the Krushers early, then held sway for a reasonably comfortable victory. But it might be worth remembering that Oakleigh, despite succumbing by 13 points, still had the better of the scoring shots, and also had their

champion full-forward held to a rare low three goals - a containment the Rovers may need to replicate to keep the boys from Scammell in check. Conversely, the run from the Krushers started from humble beginnings, and what they have pieced together since Round 7 has been nothing short of astounding - the abovementioned their only loss in 12 outings. Based on ladder positions, they may still go in as underdogs. Will fate be cruel and stop their momentum in its tracks at the penultimate hurdle? Or will they deny Hampton a fourth crack at the Monders? Either result will leave a tinge of sadness for us “tragics”, a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in sight for the victors....

UHS-VU DOUBLE JUMP, PARADIANS OUT OF BOUNDS For the second year in a row, UHS-VU have won the second-semi-final, earning them direct promotion into Division 1 and an all-important shot at a second-successive premiership. In the other semi-final, Whitefriars have served notice on the remaining teams that they are the real deal. While we say goodbye to a fighting Yarra Old Grammarians, our other semi final loser, Old Paradians, must lick their wounds, regroup and figure out how to match a freescoring and hard running Friars outfit in the Preliminary Final.
Old Parade were reeling at their shock exit at the hands of MHSOB in the Division 2 semifinals. Fast forward to this week and both sides are playing for redemption. This is going to be a classic battle between two sides who are evenly matched at both ends of the field, both with much to prove. Whitefriars are taking good recent form into this game after a solid win over Yarra Old Grammarians last week, while the Raiders are looking for some answers after losing four out of their last five matches, after being front runners for most of the home-and-away season.
UHS-VU’s time in Division 2 was short lived, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. They have defeated a gallant Old Paradians side by 16 points and have earned themselves not only a spot in the Division 2 Grand Final, but promotion to Division 1 for the first time since 1978. In the other semi, the Whitefriars boys held off a hard-fighting Yarra Old Grammarians by 20 points to take them into a preliminary final appearance against Old Paradians this weekend.
Last time these two met was in Round 15, where Whitefriars defeated the Raiders, despite giving up a 27-point three-quartertime lead, to hang on by eight points. Before that, in Round 8, Parade came from 22 points down at three quarter time to kick five unanswered goals to snatch a four-point victory. This prelim will be no different. Since losing Michael Boundy to injury, the Raiders have struggled to kick a winning score and look to Marcus Nolan and Byron Walton to have an impact in front of goal. The Jeffrey brothers recent form has been excellent, but they need a whole team effort and increased group contribution. Their defence last week was solid, holding UHS-VU to 81 points, but their challenge will be to kick a winning score.
In the Reserves, Whitefriars have won through to the Division 2 Reserve Grand Final with a 34-point win over UHS-VU, while MHSOB defeated Old Parade by 25 points to book their spot in the Preliminary Final. The Raiders waved goodbye to season 2018.
PREVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL: OLD PARADIANS VS WHITEFRIARS This time last year, Whitefriars were reviewing the prospect of playing Division 2 football after a disappointing Division 1 season, while 34
On the flip side, the Friars have been flying, winning their last eight games in a row and looking every bit a premiership contender. Their pace, spread and depth through the midfield, spearheaded by Kristan Height and supported by unheralded Angus Hands and Hewitt Murray, make them hard to contain. But, despite Paradians’ recent losses, their defence has still been miserly. In their recent

clashes, Parade has come storming home in the last quarters of both games, which proves that their fitness is strong and they have belief. The key is whether the Raiders’ backline can contain the Friars’ spread of star-studded forward options. Both sides know their best is good enough. In a battle that is likely to be tense and close it will all depend on the team that shows up on game day. In the Reserves Preliminary finals, it’s the battle of the high schools, with UHS-VU and MHSOB playing off for a shot at Whitefriars in next week’s Grand Final. Uni High are looking to bounce back after their second semi-final loss last week, but it’s the inform Unicorns who might just take the points in a close one. TIPS Whitefriars v Old Paradians

WARRIORS BLEED AQUINAS DRY, GRAND FINAL BOUND GRYPHONS Glen Eira booked their place in Division 2 PREVIOUS MEETINGS for 2019, the week off & the Division 3 Grand Final with a one-point win in a thriller against Hawthorn AFC. The Hawks kept the Gryphons to a solitary behind in the last quarter, with Glen Eira clinging on in a tense finish. Going into the main break 20 points up in a relatively low scoring tussle and then extending their lead to 34 points, the Gryphons were then challenged by the Hawks, who kicked 4.10 in the second half and will rue missed opportunities. Reports out of the game are that Glen Eira may have a couple of injury concerns, however hopefully the week break can give the Gryphons under these clouds ample time to recover. No such luck for the Hawks who have to back it up today in a cutthroat Preliminary Final. The Bloods magic run came to an end with Westbourne peppering the goals to register a 36 point win on Sunday. The Warriors defensive set up was exemplary, keeping Aquinas to one-goal for the first half and scoreless for the second quarter, however errant kicking kept the Bloods in the contest, going in to the main break 21 points ahead. Aquinas wrestled their way to only trail by nine points at the final change, with Westbourne starting to wonder whether their missed opportunities would come back to haunt them. However the side that was dubbed the Truganina Train steamrolled the Bloods in the last quarter, kicking 5.11 to run away with the victory and book their place in today’s Preliminary Final.

THE CASE FOR HAWTHORN The Hawks were inches away from knocking off the standout side in the competition last week, further emphasising that their best is equal to any in the division. A return to Division 2 and another crack at the Gryphons is the prize at the final siren today. Kicking 9.14 last week, accuracy in front of goal will be at the forefront of both sides coming into this week, but the Hawks will take the knowledge that keeping Glen Eira to two goals in the second half into this match-up, knowing they can keep the Warriors to a manageable score. Looking through who performed last week for the Hawks, there are winners across every line, and you cannot disregard the class Hawthorn possess, which took them to 2nd on the ladder and within a solitary point of Glen Eira.
THE CASE FOR WESTBOURNE GRAMMARIANS To put it simply, they are good enough to knock off Hawthorn. With absolutely no disrespect to Aquinas, looking at the results between the top three sides, and the evenness THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

of all three against each other, you can pick a winner on any day which created a gap to the rest of the competition. If the Warriors can rectify kicking 9.25 as they did against the Bloods, they have the scoring capacity to kick a score against the Hawks. Defensively, they were impressive last week and will give the Hawthorn coaching staff plenty to think about coming into this week’s preliminary

BULLS STAMP GRAND FINAL TICKET, X-MEN SET UP CLASH WITH PARKSIDE Minor premiers and flag favourites North Brunswick have officially locked themselves into the 2018 Division 4 Grand Final, as well as the Division 3 competition next season, with a convincing 48-point victory over Parkside at Garvey Oval. It was the usual suspects’ in-front of goal who did most of the damage, with the George brothers and Michael Salloum combining for 10 of their sides 14 majors to cruise to their first Grand Final appearance since 1995, and ending an 18-year stay in Division Four. The Red-Devils will lick their wounds and look to bounce back strongly when they face St Francis Xavier in a Preliminary Final after the X-Men accounted for the South Melbourne Districts by 30-points at Waverley Oval. Despite a slow start, SFX used a 10-goal to three second half to storm past the Swans and set up a mouth-watering do-or-die clash with the afore mentioned Parkside. Here is what to expect from our only contest this weekend. A chance to battle with the best of the best. A clash featuring the two best defensive sides in the competition, Parkside and St Francis Xavier, is set and ready to put on a classic, with the winner to etch their name into the second Saturday of September, and a date with the all-conquering Bulls. Winners in 11 of their last 12 before their 48-point loss on the weekend, the Red-Devils had put together one of their strongest seasons in recent memory, and despite the loss, are still very much in the drivers’ seat to get another crack at the Bulls next weekend. The X-Men’s start to the season had to be seen to be believed, and even though their all-out scoring style of play may have cooled since Round 6, they have still found ways to get the points, winning five in a row and giving themselves every opportunity to cause a major upset in this one. The two sides are eerily similar in a number of 38
facets. Both possess high scoring forward lines (SFX 2nd – Parkside 3rd), and elite defensive back sixes (SFX 1st – Parkside 2nd) that make it very difficult for their opponents to score. Their midfields are both of a high class, with names like Brendan O’Hara, Stephen Chin and Daniel Chin setting up for St Francis Xavier while Parkside come back with Adam Wells, Marco Creek and a rejuvenated Isaac Romano. The two sides faced each other twice this season, first on June 2nd and again on July 14th, with both clashes going the way of the Red-Devils, but a combined winning margin of just eight points from those matches suggests that it is indeed closer than the 2-0 season sweep suggests. The two low-scoring affairs (67-63 & 74-70) both came down to the wire, with the difference maker being Parkside’s ability to run out games, and handle the fourth quarter pressure more effectively than their X-Men counterparts. A three goal to one final term in both Round 9 & 13 saw the Devils leapfrog their opponents with just minutes remaining, and escape with the points on both occasions. St Francis Xavier full-forward Harrison Coe has been on a tear in recent weeks, booting 12 majors in his last three outings, including three last weekend against the Swans. Parkside’s second ranked defensive unit lead by Anthony Waters will have their hands full dealing with him, as well as the likes of Andrew Daly and their plethora of midfield scoring talent in Brendan O’Hara and Stephen Richards-Gill. For St Francis Xavier, containing all of Matthew Soligo, Sam Gilfedder, Isaac Romano and Luciano Logozzo is almost impossible, leaning on Josh Lafranchi and Ryan Eggleston to handle the brunt of the load. But if they are able to control the midfield battle and limit the amount of Parkside forward entry like the Bulls did last weekend, it will go a long way in securing an THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

Geoff Reilley
@GeoffreyReilley
5 YEARS AGO - 2013 Old Brighton had finished on top of the Premier B ladder and proved their favoured position with a clear victory over Old Trinity in the second semi, 15.17 to 9.14. With an eight-goal lead at half time, the Tonners were now ‘red hot’ for the flag and on their way to the Premier section in 2014. Trinity could only manage four goals in the first half but did fight their way back in the third quarter with four majors to one. Skewes was pivotal for Brighton in the ruck and enabled Marcel Bruin to help nullify the usual influence of Trinity’s midfielders. Trinity were well served by ‘team of the year’ inductees, David Wildsmith and Gabe Hamilton. Best - Skewes, Fallon, Jakobi, North, Karayannis (5), Cavalloro (Brighton) and Pacconi, Wildsmith, Howell, Stewart, Tinney, Ramsden (Trinity). In Premier C, Mazenod completely overpowered their rivals, Marcellin, in the second semi final, 24.11 to 9.12. Marcellin had led at quarter time 5.3 to 3. 2 but it was all Mazenod after that. Best Mann, Patti, Thomas, Inglis, Chamberlain, Oldman (Maz) and Viney, J Bortolotto, J Carlson, Holmes, Gasparini, T Carlson (Marcellin).
10 YEARS AGO - 2008 A Section scribe, Jonathan Horne, summed up the A Section First semi final perfectly “one of those games that warrants a follow up look on DVD as it happened a bit quickly to take it in properly”. Scotch led 6.8 to Xavs 3.2 at quarter time and looked really slick despite the rain. Xavs came back hard in the second term but still trailed by ten points at the main break. Scotch cut loose again in the third quarter to take a 12.13 to 9.5 lead into the three quarter time break. When James Scanlon ran down Scotch captain Will Lewis as he ran into an open goal, the tide seemed to turn and Xavs banged on five consecutive goals and went on to win 16.7 to 14.13 in a magnificent exhibition of amateur football. Best - Chatfield, Lynch (4), Ryan, Scanlon, Howard, Clarke (Xavs) and Houlihan (7), Barton, Eva (3), Aurel-Smith, Scheetz, Angus (Scotch). Marcellin Old Collegians won the B Section first semi over Old Haileybury 14.15 to 13.15, an entertaining game with the lead changing a number of times. Eleven goals were kicked in the final quarter. Best - J Carlson, J Bortolotto (5), 48
Montagna, Spence, T Carlson, Crapper (Marcellin) and Voss (3), Siapantis (4), McLauchlan, Brewer, Loewe, Mackenzie (Haileybury). The C Section second semi was a triumph for Ormond over rivals Hampton Rovers 11.18 to 9.11 with the best - Duthie, Martinov (3), Keleher, Brosnan, Jones (Orm) and Woods, Zampaglione, Alexander, Devereaux, Carr, Dallas (Hampton).
20 YEARS AGO - 1998 Old Scotch (14.15) easily defeated Old Melburnians (8.8) in the A Section first semi, with Scotch leading at every break. Best - Eagle, Smith, Collins, Duthie (3), Millar, O’Brien (Scotch) and Roberts, Guest (3), Eabry, L Bond, McKeon, Aubrey (OM’s). Old Trinity defeated North Old Boys in the B Section first semi in a high scoring match; 20.20 to 18.13. Best - D Burrows, Alibon, Stephen, Ramsden, Heath (4), C Phillips (Trinity) and Jordan (3), Mikunda (5), Vavallo, Collison, Manassa, Tonkin (NOBS). In C Section, Beaumaris had often jumped out the blocks quickly in their matches and the second semi final was no exception when they kicked 7.4 to Old Mentonians one goal straight. The Mentonians made up some ground but were playing catch up footy for the remainder of the game, Beaumaris winning 14.19 to 12.9. Best Groves, Holt, Vance (3), Mitchell, Fisher, Vaughan (Beaumaris) and Lean, Dart, Paterson, Stroud, Stephen, Solley (Mentonians).
30 YEARS AGO - 1988 The A Section first semi final went as the scribes predicted; Old Xaverians defeating Marcellin Old Collegians 16.11 to 8.11 with Steve Curtain starring for the Xavs. Many were predicting Xavs to be A Section premiers in two weeks time. Best - Callan, J McKay, Atkins, S Curtain (7), Meagher, D McKay (Old Xavs) and Sheehan, Lennox, Delahunt, Cooper, M Day, O’Flynn (Marc). In the B Section first semi, Therry defeated Bulleen Templestowe 13.15 to 11.5. Best - Nyman, Tyler, Matton, McCann, Grocock, Quinn (Therry) and George, Smythe (5), Espenchied, Driver, Tsiotinas, Fairley (Bull/Temp). Old Brighton controlled the C Section preliminary final 16.12 to Banyule’s 9.18. Best - Woff, P Grant, Lade, Waddington (5), Pryor, Farrell (Old Brighton) THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018
and D Williams, J Fraumano, Mooney, Hobbs, Attard, Gilham (Banyule).
(5), Clark, I Mathieson, Greg Tootell (3), John Tootell (Caulfield Grammarians) and Crouch, Pruden, Patterson, Saunders, Hill, McGregor (Uni Blacks).
40 YEARS AGO - 1978 Field umpires appointments were as follows - A Grade 1st semi final - Croxford and Goodman, B Grade - J Smith, C Grade - King and Tracey, D Grade - G Simpson and Rowe, E Grade - Rowell and Willis, F Grade - Meade and Sharpe.
Parkside won a thriller in the B Section first semi-final at the expense of St Kevin’s Old Boys. The biggest lead in the game was 3.5 to 0.2 by Parkside, as SKOB fought back and it was a real arm wrestle until the final bell which saw Parkside achieve victory 11.10 to 10.10. Best players – D Gleeson, Willoughby, Eames, Romani, Wilson, Ford (Parkside) and Morgan, Sheehan (5), Lewin, Simon, Cox, Mooney (SKOBS).
At half time of the A Section 1st semi North Old Boys and Ivanhoe were 13 points apart but in the second half NOBS went on to kick 11.7 to 0.10! Best players - Borcich, Hannaberry, Robertson, Dillon (6) all from NOBS and Simpson, McNamara and Stredwick for Ivanhoe. In B Grade, Old Paradians’ inaccuracy (8.23) in the first semi threw the competition into ‘minor’ chaos when they drew with Old Haileybury (10.11). Best - Natoli, Rowe, Johnson (OP) and Houghton, D Legge and Paul starred for OH. In the C Section second semi, AJAX won their way into B Section for the following season by defeating St Kilda CBC Old Boys by a solitary point 11.6 to 10.11. Best - Rozen, M Ritterman, Korn (AJAX) and Jones, Dynon, Salter (StK CBC). The same margin saw Bulleen Templestowe 11.18 defeat St Bedes OC 12.11 in E Section for Bulleen Temp to earn promotion to D Grade for 1979.
50 YEARS AGO - 1968 After losing their second spot in the top four after a last round loss, Caulfield Grammarians met University Blacks in the A Section first semi-final. The Grammarians started better with six goals in the first quarter to the Blacks’ three, and Caulfield’s talented forward line looked especially dangerous. The Blacks displayed a much improved system in the second quarter to be only three points down at half time and respective coaches, John Wilson and Brian Gleeson, challenged the players to better efforts in the knock-out final. Caulfield again took the advantage with 7.4 against the Blacks’ 3.5. It was a very high standard game considering the heavy rain in the first quarter that had rendered the ground slippery. With a handy lead, Caulfield entered the final term full of confidence but it was the Blacks who were first in and they drew within 17 points with plenty of time before Caulfield steadied with an important goal against the flow win 17.12 to 15.13. Best players – Atchison, Butcher THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018
60 YEARS AGO - 1958 Geoff Hibbins (Collegians) won the A Section Best & Fairest by 2 votes from Frank Hillyear (Coburg). Bob McLellan (Old Brighton) won the E Section Best & Fairest with an outstanding performance of scoring votes in 16 out of the 18 games played. Old Scotch (11.6) defeated State Savings Bank (9.6) in the A Section first semi final. Best players - Ian Law, Keith Maughan, R Morris, K Melville, M Parry. M Eggleston (Old Scotch) and McNeill, Strachan, Walters and Bill Petering were the Bank’s best. Bill Petering kicked five goals straight. Bill’s son, Grant, went on to win an Ormond B&F in an A Grade premiership season, and his grandson, Matthew Petering, is a highly regarded present day player with Beaumaris.
70 YEARS AGO - 1948 The A Grade and B Grade B&F awards were announced - Denis Cordner (Uni Blacks) was the A Grade winner with 5 votes from Sam Birtles (Hampton Rovers), Ted Cordner (Old Melburnians), Keith Gough (Old Scotch) and Doug Heywood (Uni Blacks) all with 3 votes. John Kennedy (Teachers’ College) won B Grade with 5 votes ahead of H Lummas (Elsternwick) 4 votes. The A Grade first semi final was played at Parkdale. Old Scotch were three goals up at three quarter time but wilted under a determined attack by Old Melburnians who went on to win 13.11 to 14.15. Best - Schwarz, Woods, Smyth, Cox (OM’s) and Bedford, Eggleston, Geer, Hardy (Old Scotch). Old Xaverians won the B Grade first semi final 10.7 to Parkside’s 8.12. Old Xaverians named Tiernan, Dooley, Murphy, Phelan, Barbaro and Williams as their best players. 49

REVIEW:
REVIEW:
Despite some shocking inaccuracy in front of goals, Old Xaverians were able to hold off a gallant Caulfield Grammarians in the elimination first semi final at a wind swept Elsternwick Park. With a strong wind favouring the Glenhuntly Rd end, it was quite surprising that neither team really were able to take advantage of the pronounced breeze. For Xavs, it was familiar names who were prominent with Dalbosco and Soccio, both with two majors in the best, along with Batten and Troiani, whereas the Fields Lowe was their standout. Whilst disappointing to lose, Caulfield can take great heart they have a good group coming through. A horribly lopsided contest from the start, with a strangely subdued and disappointing De La Salle, meekly conceding to a very slick Old Scotch team which deservedly won through to the grand final. For Scotch, they were able to play as they wished, and for De La they will need to improve if they entertain hopes of extending their season. Blenheim (4) and Griffin were in the best for Scotch, but Tom Loveridge also had an impact on proceedings. For De La, it was slim pickings looking for good players, and they will need more from all players.
PREVIEW: If the same attitudes and behaviours occur in the preliminary final, it could well be straight sets for De La because Old Xaverians are well organised and determined to keep their season going and they certainly played better in their match. De La will need to keep an eye on Batten and Dalbosco in the mids and find a strong bodied defender to go with Soccio who is a tough assignment up forward. For Old Xaverians, they may need to just keep doing what they did because their trademark aggression and pressure always gives opposing sides less time then they may actually have. Based on the two games last week it’s hard to go past Old Xaverians and I see them advancing to the last game for season 2018.
Parkdale seem to have found the right time to resurrect their season when they defeated near neighbours St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in the bayside derby to advance to the preliminary final this week. Finals are always tight and pressure filled and, for the tigers, a goalless opening quarter was always going to prove a huge hurdle for them to overcome if they were looking to upset the higher placed Parkdale. For the Vultures, they keep their season alive and it is a fair result given their consistency across the whole game. O’Leary (3) and Love-Linay (2) up forward working in tandem was just a bit too hard for the Tigers to subdue. Williamstown CYMS advance to the grand final as a result of a tight victory over an Old Carey team which has now lost three on the trot and has it all to play for this week. The game was tight all day, but with a couple of effective targets up forwards in Cutajar (3) and King (2), the seagulls were able to sneak home. For Old Carey, they have been stumbling badly in the last few weeks and they need to arrest this slump given they are in the last chance saloon.
PREVIEW: This has the hallmarks of being a terrific game, Old Carey who four weeks ago were sitting pretty and taking all before them and a Parkdale side, who were my early season flag favourites, newly resurgent and ready to return to Premier grade for season 2019. Old Carey have been faltering, but in their favour is they have a larger collective of players who can step up, whereas Parkdale seem to have a strong reliance upon Love-Linay up forward, so it may come down to if the Panthers can stop the supply to him and get their collective all firing as opposed to a smaller group trying to do more work. I’m going to stick my neck out here and say that Old Carey are a club on the rise and I have a sneaking suspicion they could well return to face a rested Williamstown next week.
Holmesglen U19 Premier De La Salle v Old Xaverians
PREMIER RESERVE: 2 from 2 here and what surprised was the closeness of the games, so it makes this week a disaster for me to try and get it right. With their premier team enjoying a week off, I think Old Scotch may be able to bring a few back to make it two teams in a grand final, so with absolutely no conviction whatsoever I’m selecting them. SECTION 3: REVIEW:
Old Trinity will be bitterly disappointed with their loss against Marcellin after they had peppered away in the last to try and overcome a three-quarter time deficit and fell just short. They now sit out the rest of the year when they would have desperately wanted to have been joining their senior counterparts in finals action. For the Eagles, after sneaking into finals very late in the year, this was a terrific win they were THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018
well led by familiar names in Capetola and Way, and they now advance into the prelim and they have nothing to lose. Mazenod turned the tables on Old Brighton to enjoy a week off when they were able to strangle the previously free flowing free running Old Brighton in a surprising, but ultimately pretty comprehensive, victory. The win was set up by a combination of a six goal second quarter and defensively locking out the Tonners who were unable to break the shackles until the game was too far out of reach. For the Nodders, a second successive promotion and this group may indeed be the tonic for the Seniors who were disappointing in Premier B.
PREVIEW: I have a horrible feeling that the hornets nest has been poked and Old Brighton may indeed look to wreak vengeance upon Marcellin. Old Brighton would be looking to atone for their loss in the second semi and will want to have one more crack at Mazenod and it may well be that Marcellin are on the end of a fired up Tonners outfit. Marcellin have enjoyed a terrific run over the last five weeks making finals late and winning last week over their next door neighbour, but this may be a bridge too far to them. For mine it’s Old Brighton. Holmesglen U19 Section 3 Old Brighton v Marcellin
SECTION 4: REVIEW:
Confusion reigned at the conclusion of the game between Whitefriars and South Melbourne Districts when the umpires were required to sort out the scores to determine a winner, when the scoreboard showed the teams locked together on 82 points apiece, and both teams were wondering what they needed to do. In a game which was close all day despite the prevailing breeze, these evenly matched teams put on a terrific contest. For the victors, they were able to bring a couple of boys back from the seniors which may well have harmed their seniors chances of advancing. With Twigg (3) and Booker leading the way, South Melbourne have a chance to advance to the grand final next week. For the Friars, this was a dreadful way to lose, but they should reflect on what has been a great season despite this heartbreaking loss. Old McKinnon did what was required when they were able to pull away from a tiring PEGS outfit and advance to Section 3 next year, but also give them a grand final berth. For PEGS, they were able to stick with the Gryphons for a half, but were overrrun by a powerful last quarter when Old McKinnon flicked the switch and stamped their premiership favouritism. For the Gryphons, they were well led by Bass and Tang. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018
PREVIEW: I’m not sure who will win this, because I’m not sure if PEGS will have any residual negativity from another debilitating loss to the flag favourites which would have been quite disappointing given their improved effort. On the other hand, South Melbourne Districts have a real buoyancy about them given they enjoyed a win at a difficult venue by the slimmest of margins away, they have players back from their senior group and with strong support from the senior club they could well have momentum on their side. PEGS have clearly been in the top two all year so they deserve to enjoy a second successive promotion, but they will need to improve and with this in mind I’m leaning to them. Holmesglen U19 Section 4 PEGS v South Melbourne Districts
SECTION 5: REVIEW:
Old Paradians defeated Peninsula to advance to the preliminary final in game which was characterised by quite distinctive halves. Peninsula must have been trying to overcome both no bench and the long trip to Garvey oval because it took them until the third to mount their charge. In finals, it is usually fatal to be slightly off when there are fine margins at stake, and maybe that third quarter effort was proof because Old Paradians weathered that storm and overran a tiring Peninsula to earn a chance to be promoted to Section 4. Aquinas deservedly advanced to the grand final when they ran away from a tiring De La Salle with a commanding last quarter win. For De La, it’s not all doom and gloom because they were able to stay close to the Bloods for three quarters, but were simply overpowered in the last. For the Bloods, Dwyer (5) and Dodd were good, but I liked the game of Noyes who was far too elusive for his De La counterparts in the mids.
PREVIEW:
Old Paradians have a look of destiny about them and after a disappointing loss to Aquinas recently they would want to atone for that and prove they can take a long overdue flag back to Garvey. For De La, they will need more from their leaders who meekly surrendered when the game was on the line last week if they want to advance. It’s an interesting match-up as De La may be able to get a few back from their premier team which would certainly help bolster them and it could be that which tips the balance. For the Paradians, this is a real chance to help revive a proud VAFA club, and with so much at stake it may be this that helps get them over the line. UMPIRES CORNER
Haydn O’Connor - Umpire Operations Manager Congratulations to all those selected for Grand Finals to date. It is a testament to your commitment and also fulfilling all requirements with the Finals Selection Criteria. I have no doubt you will represent the VAFA Umpires & VAFAUA in the same professional manner that you have done all season.
GRAND FINAL APPOINTMENTS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 5: The Division 1-4 Seniors & Reserves, U19 Grand Finals & Premier Division Preliminary Finals will be announced on Wednesday September 5 at VAFA HQ Social Room (upstairs). I urge all umpires from 2018 to attend to celebrate the achievements of those selected and also reflect on the year. It is an important night on the VAFA & VAFAUA Calendar and in the brand new facility with food & drinks provided by the VAFAUA, it is sure to be a wonderful evening. More details will follow about the Premier Grand Final Appointments over the next week so please stay tuned.
FINALS SELECTION CRITERIA: All umpires were sent in July, and for transparency, all clubs have had access to the Selection Policy regarding how the umpires are picked to officiate every finals match. As an example, the Field Umpires selected for each finals match are selected on the following criteria;
THE OVERARCHING CONSIDERATION IS UMPIRES ADHERING TO THE VAFA UMPIRES GAME PLAN • Protect the ball player • Work as a team • Work hard • Take control when needed • Blend into the game
FROM THIS, THE 3 KEY CRITERIA ARE: • Decisional accuracy (paying major and obvious free kicks; no unwarranted) • Match management (taking appropriate action, especially at set plays and volatile situations) • Teamwork (commitment to the umpiring team on the day and the group as a whole) OTHER FACTORS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION ARE: • Appropriate communication (to players, officials and other umpires) • Consistent effort (strong work rate; change of pace; in the best position) • Regular attendance at pre-season training • Regular attendance at in-season training • Regular attendance at coaching sessions • Appropriate notification when unable to attend training, coaching or to umpire • Regular availability to umpire • Presentation • Coachability • Commitment to umpiring in the VAFA Our other two disciplines (Boundary & Goal) also have similar criteria in order to be selected that relate to their specific skills. The VAFA Umpiring Department accept there will be errors made throughout the finals series, however I urge to all football supporters to reflect on the above criteria when looking to evaluate the performance of the umpires on the day, as all of the criteria has been met by the best that we have running around over the next three weekends.
