Our family had a working relationship 40 years strong with William Buck. Their team really understood our business. Our biggest challenge in the last 5 years has been seeking finance as we executed our growth plans. Our advisors have been our greatest allies and outcomes have been significant – 30% increase in sales, financial stability and most importantly, peace of mind, which lets us sleep well at night. We now plan to double our turnover through a second redevelopment. So more fresh thinking will be in order. We know we’re in good hands. TIM RUGLESS Managing Director, Rugless Family Foodland

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

Brett Connell - VAFA CEO

As the 2018 season draws to a close, it is worthwhile reflecting on some of the achievements across the association this year. The season began back in April with 74 clubs, 301 teams and 34 divisions, with our total number of players reaching 13,000; 3000 of those being women across eight divisions. While some clubs struggled at times due to unavailability and injuries, we still provided the single biggest male and female competitions in community sport across the nation – no mean achievement. Full credit to the dedicated number of volunteers who keep their VAFA clubs ticking across the season. The main achievements that spring to mind and are worth noting are i) the move into the new pavilion and being able to take to the field on the brand new surface at Elsternwick Park, ii) the historic four-peat which saw the VAFA win every representative match we competed in this season, including our first every women’s interstate victory and iii) the continued growth and development of our women’s competition, the likes of which none of us could have imagined. In particular the ground renovation and pavilion upgrade made possible through the support and assistance of the AFL, AFL Vic, SRV, Bayside Council, Old Melburnians FC and the Elsternwick CC is historic, as it has finally put first class facilities at the disposal of all VAFA clubs and umpires – a precinct we should all be very proud of, while still a work in progress. We are continually looking to improve across a number of key areas across the VAFA. This

includes the manner in which we support and assist our clubs (Club Development), to reviewing our current operating rules, in particular tribunal and investigation policies and procedures (Rules). Working to find solutions for the major pain points for our clubs, namely financial challenges of running a club, recruiting and retaining volunteers and the plethora of compliances that add to the strain on volunteers (Club Development), is always a forefront priority. Across the off season, with a view to 2019, our focus will also be on a number of crucial areas of our game in general, coaching and umpiring. We need to invest more in our coaches at all levels as they are important leaders on match-days and set the tone in many ways. We also must recruit, develop and continue to retain umpires in greater numbers, particularly female umpires. This will remain a key focus for us and the VAFAUA working closely together. None of these improvements will happen overnight, however rest assured they are key focus areas for us moving forward so as to keep the VAFA at the forefront of community football in this state. In closing, congratulations to all our premiership winners to date, you have made history on many fronts and continue to inspire us all. To those clubs who have gained promotion to a higher division in 2019, well done to all involved, a fitting reward for all of your efforts. To the teams and umpires competing in grand finals or preliminary finals, may the best team win and enjoy the experience. See you at the footy.

T’S TAMING FINALS FOOTBALL BEAST Finals football is a different beast. With the spike in intensity, it requires a calm head and supreme execution of skills, and it’s safe to say Old Trinity exhibited that in spades when they defeated Old Brighton by 40 points on Sunday afternoon. The T’s entered the elimination final on a four-game winning streak and continued that form with five goals to one in the opening term. Jake Steinhart set the tone early with a bomb from outside 50 before Anthony Scott, Luther Juric, Harry Tinney and Sam Joyce each found the scoreboard. The Tonners were forced to play catch-up thereafter and, despite a slight window where they kicked the first two goals of the third term, it proved far too steep a hill to climb. The T’s showcased corridor football in its purest, carving it up through the middle of the ground via the sublime foot skills of Jack Hunt, Scott and Steinhart, giving Ed Weatherson, Seb Nicolosi and Tinney every chance of applying scoreboard pressure. The young Tonners outfit will take lessons learnt, particularly from the fourth term when the game was ultimately over, as they reload for 2019 under the captaincy of their two most composed and discipline players, Harry Hill and Dylan Verney. They took VAFA supporters on an incredible ride throughout the 2018 season and they are primed for another assault on the VAFA’s top section next year. As for the T’s, they must feel as though they are a genuine chance in this weekend’s preliminary final against St Kevin’s OB after SKOB fell short against Collegians in the second semi-final. Collegians will compete in their second consecutive William Buck Premier grand final and for its first flag since 2012 after they defeated SKOB by seven points on Saturday. The Lions led by 23 points at three quarter time and kicked the first goal of the fourth via the boot of star forward Lachie Ferguson, until SKOB fought back to within a point with 2

four straight goals. It was Hugh Johnson who bobbed up for the sealer for the Lions when he soccered one from 12m with just three minutes remaining. Courtney Hylton was incredible as he spent periods in the ruck, while Sam Hibbins and Viv Michie continued their outstanding recent form. George Burbury was silk in the first term and paved the way with the opening two goals of the game. The story of SKOB’s game and the days following were the early injuries to Mitch Brown (concussion), Sam Critchley (ankle) and Stephen Gilham (knee). Brown and Critchley played no further part in the game after the first 18m of the opening term, while Gilham walked off the field for what will likely be the last time in his illustrious career early in the second. The situation certainly didn’t improve for SKOB when James Strauss hobbled off the ground in the third clutching his nether regions, but a short break and a few deep breaths allowed him to return in the fourth. It’s no secret Anthony Lynch is one of the alltime leaders in the VAFA and his performance on Saturday, both in a playing and leadership capacity, was of the utmost professionalism. Despite being undermanned, his belief in his team not once wavered and his ruck work was as dominant a performance you will likely see at Amateur level. The question for SKOB heading into this week’s preliminary final will be who, if any, of their injured played gets up and then how big of an impact Tom Jok will have in his return from VFL.

PREVIEW St Kevin’s OB and Old Trinity have met twice throughout the 2018 season with SKOB running out winners on both occasions. Their first meeting in Round 4 was a dominant THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

42-point win at TH King Oval, but the return clash at the Daley went down to the wire as SKOB came from 13 points down at half time and claimed a thrilling three-point victory. Despite missing key personnel, SKOB are one of the most disciplined and well-structured teams in recent memory, meaning their ability to cover losses through a wholistic team approach is more than possible. However, if Trinity can play on their terms,

tearing off half back and carving shapes through the middle of the ground, they are more than capable of winning their fifth game in a row. KEY MATCH-UPS Anthony Lynch vs Harry Thompson Tom Jok vs Anthony Scott Billy Kanakis vs Luke Pacconi TIPS St Kevins’ OB v Old Trinity

DOG DAYS ARE OVER; ST BERNARD’S PROMOTED, BLACKS EYE OFF PANTHERS For the Premier B faithful, there could be no surprise at Box Hill City oval on Saturday afternoon when this section’s standouts, St Bernard’s, kept rolling out their undeniable 2018 campaign with a 31-point victory over second placed Old Carey. Though a resounding final siren result, the day didn’t go all the Snow Dog’s way when the Panthers pounced to an early 16-point lead in the opening term, but true to character, the unyielding St Bernard’s crew were quick to bite back with a five goal second quarter while limiting the fast starter’s to a meagre point. The match continued in a similar fashion in the latter half, with the Bernard’s Caven boys, Michael (4), Thomas and Simon, running riot, though our newly crowned Premier B B&F winner, the recipient of the GT Moore medal, Chad Jones, was held unusually goalless – a credit to the work of the Carey defence on the section’s leading goalkicker. Though unsuccessful here, the Panthers will take solace in the outstanding form of Kristian Jaksch (2), and the reliable Sam Cust and Henry Schade heading into their preliminary battle against University Blacks. Jaksch, Cust and Schade all polled remarkably well for Old Carey in the B&F count, with 20, 16 and 9 votes, respectively. A display of utter dominance in the fourth quarter at Trevor Barker oval on Sunday afternoon enabled University Blacks to renege a 15-point 3QT deficit and emerge as 19-point victors over the inspiring Caulfield Grammarians. The remarkable tale of the Fields journey to finals, a feat made possible by five consecutive wins (including a 4-point scalp over St Bernard’s), looked destined to continue during the heart of this battle, with players the ilk of Chris Diggle and Tom Green (2) standing tall against the Blacks’ brunt. But, a series of unfortunate events brought 4

this silverware dream crashing down for the grammarians, including a horrific second quarter ankle injury to co-skipper and Big V star, Tim Nixon, and squandered opportunities in front of goals by the most reliable of stalwarts like Nick Baltas (3), Louis O’Keefe (1) and Green (2) mid-way through the third term which left a crack in the door for the Blacks to inevitably break open. For the victorious Blacks, who’s final quarter turnaround is a testament to the leadership of the always calm-and-collected Cam Roberts, John Vrodos (4) was outstanding, as was the Blacks top vote getter in the GT Moore medal, Joshua Steadman (15 votes).

PRELIMINARY FINAL: OLD CAREY V UNIVERSITY BLACKS SATURDAY 2.20PM, ELSTERNWICK PARK CURRENT FORM OLD CAREY: WWWWL

Uni Blacks: WWWWW

HEAD TO HEAD  1-1 It’s four premiership points apiece when reflecting on these side’s 2018 clashes to date, with the Blacks claiming victory at Carey Sports Complex in Round 8 by way of a 26-point ascendancy at the final siren and the Panthers returning the favour at Melbourne Uni in Round 14 by a comparable 24 points. In their first meeting, University Blacks were up against the then ladder-leaders on their home deck, and this advantage held true for part of the match as the Panthers led the Blacks by four points at the main break. Though the Blacks had difficulties converting on the scoreboard to this point, scoring 1.12, they raised hell with seven goals to the Panthers one in the third, a result enhanced THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

by numerous undisciplined 25m penalties from the Carey boys when their resilience was needed most. The return of Lachlan Huntington (4) did not go unnoticed for the winners here, while 2017 Woodrow medallist, Bede Mahon, caught the eye of the umpires with three GT Moore medalvotes. Kristian Jaksch was in the midst of his red-hot streak at this stage, matching Huntington’s four majors. In the latter encounter, a flying start simply wasn’t enough for University Blacks to win and withhold 2nd place from Old Carey. Though Blacks regulars Lochie Dornauf (3), Jordan Quaile (2) and Jarrod Carlson performed admirably when the visitors questioned, the Panthers evidently had all the answers after a half-time regroup, dispelling the Uni boys hopes with a nine goal to four secondhalf. Sam Cust was deemed the BOG by the umpires, adding three votes to his eventual 16 vote GT Moore medalhaul, while the coaching staff acknowledged Jason Ashby (1) for his around the ground work-rate.

(PRELIM) FINAL THOUGHTS 1. Can the Blacks Mahon up? Red carded in the third quarter of the Blacks nail-biter with Caulfield last weekend, the reality of suspension is a definite possibility for the Blacks “clearance king”, Bede Mahon. If suspended, can the Uni boys rise and can Cam Roberts weave enough magic to fill this palpable void?

rounds 1-8 in the GT Moore medal, leading with an incredible 20 votes at Round 8 – 11 votes clear of Chad Jones (St Bernard’s) and Jack Wallace (Caulfield Grammarians) in second with 9 votes – the Kristian Jaksch effect is real. If Jaksch is up and about, the Panthers will follow suit. TIPS Old Carey v University Blacks

ROY BOYS RISE, CYS DO-OR-DIE The first week of the Premier C finals action produced two of the closest games of football this season, with each of the top four sides giving their all in search for premiership glory. Fitzroy FC booked their ticket into the grand final with a thrilling three-point victory over Williamstown CYMS at Bill Lawry Oval on Saturday. With both of the top two teams claiming a win over the other in the home and away season, little split the two sides. Fitzroy came out firing first with four goals to one to stretch the margin to 17 points early on, but when both sides returned from the first huddle, CY’s Sam Callard lea his team response as he went on to kick three of CY’s next four goals. With the Roy’s maintaining a sliver of a lead heading into the second half, they again capitalised early to kick the first two goals of the third term. After Russell Ackerly booted the CY’s next two majors to level the score, CY were able to edge in front of the Roy’s for the first time all day and they fought to finish the quarter two points ahead. Shortly afterwards, CY kicked the opening goal of the final quarter and it looked like it could be over, but it was Fitzroy who sealed the fate of the game with the final two goals of the game to secure their grand final berth. Fitzroy’s Nathan Jumeau starred down forward with his three goals, while Sam Baker and Tom Cheshire were two of the Roy’s best, and contributed another few goals between them. Ackerly was judged CY’s best with his efforts on the field, Tom Johnstone put in another fine performance, while Sam Callard’s three goal haul kept his side in the hunt. Fitzroy’s win will see them return to Premier B next season, while CY will need to take the longer road if they want to 6

feature in the grand final this season, with another match to play. A final quarter surge saw Old Geelong pip Old Camberwell for a closely fought sevenpoint victory at Bill Lawry Oval on Sunday. Old Geelong were left ruing their own inaccurate kicking early, with the OGs slotting six minor scores in the opening term, while the Wellers converted two of their own to lead by nine points at the first break. The OGs returned in the second term in better form down forward, outscoring the Wellers three goals to two, though the Wellers held on for a four point lead at the main break. An even slog in the third quarter meant the OGs could only reel back the lead by a point ahead of the final quarter, though the OGs didn’t waste their chances in the final term, kicking three goals to two to end the Wellers season. After kicking five goals last week, Christian Hatzis was again prolific down forward, with two majors for the winning side and was suitably supported by John Simson, who also slotted two. Will Sloss was again his side’s best, while Will Horsfall also impressed. Old Camberwell’s Simon Bennett was the top scorer for the day with his three goals, Harry Crothers did his part and chipped in another two, while Robert Deev and Fraser Wells were the best of the defeated.

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW Williamstown CYMS and Old Geelong will face off for the final spot in the grand final weekend, meeting at Box Hill City Oval this Saturday. The two teams have met twice this season, with the battle ground level at one THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

win a piece. CY were victorious in their first meeting with the OGs, thrashing them by 79 points in Round 5, but it was the Round 18 match up that may prove more telling, with OG upsetting CY by 47 points. It was CY’s second loss for the home and away season, and with it occurring in the final game of the season, it has now sent CY on a two game losing streak for the first time this season. The OGs, on the other hand, have won their last four games, with Christian Hatzis and Will Sloss both in great form over the last two games.

GRILL’D RISING STAR

t s i l t r Sho

Six players have been shortlisted for the 2018 Grill’d Rising Star Award from the talented crop of 19 who were nominated after each round this season. After a thorough deliberation process, those shortlisted and in the running to take out the coveted award are Anthony Zimmerman (Old Brighton), Ben Huggard (St Bernard’s), Cam Hodges (St Kevin’s OB), Geordie Nagle (De La Salle), Liam Murphy (De La Salle) and Shaun Lovell (Mazenod). The winner will be announced at the 2018 Woodrow Medal and Awards Night next Wednesday 12 September at Crown’s River Room. The Rising Star Award has long been an accurate prelude of future football success, with previous winners including two-time Woodrow Medallist Brendan Iezzi (2007), Harry Hill (2016), James Fletcher (2015), Anthony Scott (2014) and Nick Wynne (2009) and AFL player Dan Nicholson (2010). Congratulations to Zimmerman, Huggard, Hodges, Nagle, Murphy and Lovell!

2018 DIVISION BEST & FAIREST WINNERS The VAFA would like to congratulate the four winners who each came away with a medal during the week’s Division 1-4 vote counts, as announced on Tuesday evening.

Wilson (Bulleen Templestowe) and Jackson’s teammate Esubalew Ramsay (UHS-VU) polled 15 each. Jackson was one of three winners who will play in a grand final this weekend.

Sean Calcedo (Preston Bullants) was named the Division 1 LS Pepper Medallist with 29 votes from his 18 matches. Calcedo caught fire throughout the middle of the year and polled seven 3’s and a 2 in the space of eight matches between Rounds 5-12. He may have only obtained three votes in his last six games but the damage had been done, with Calcedo finishing ahead of Oakleigh pair James Hunt (24) and Aaron Cloke (23). 2017 Division 2 Medallist and Prahran Assumption skipper James Musster also polled heavily with 20. Calcedo’s twin brother, Dean, took out the same award last year and his three medals gives the family a total of four.

The Division 3 Hutchison Medal was a blowout as Hawthorn AFC’s Justin Raiti stormed home with 34 votes, 12 ahead of Westbourne Grammarians star Michael Culliver. Raiti sat on seven votes after Round 7 before exploding with 27 in the last 11 rounds. He polled 10 3’s; including, six in a row from Rounds 9-14. Culliver finished runner-up on 22 votes before injury his knee late in the season, while Jack Amies (Albert Park) polled 18 despite the Falcons winning just one game for the year. Glen Eira’s Lachlan Pound and Canterbury’s Sam Murphy round out the top five with 17 votes each.

Three votes in Round 18 gave UHS-VU midfielder, Brandon Jackson, a two-vote win in the Division 2 Fullerton Medal count. Jackson, who was named best afield in last year’s Division 3 premiership with the Vultures, trailed Whitefriars coach Kristian Height by one vote heading into the final round before piecing together a magnificent nine-goal performance against Power House. Height finished his first season with the club on 16 votes, while Billy

Proceedings kicked off sensationally for Division 4 grand finalists Parkside, with young gun Marco Creek named the OJ Meehan Medallist. Creek polled 24 votes to finish one ahead of St Francis Xavier’s Daniel Chin while his Red Devils teammate Adam Wells finished third with 17. Creek had 10 votes by Round 4 and finished with a total of six three-vote performances. Parkside had three players in the top five with Isaac Romano equal-fourth with Peter CassidyMarsh (Mt Lilydale) on 14.

Parkside FC secured a grand final berth, and promotion to Division 3, with their resounding victory over St Francis Xavier

OLD HAILEYBURY’S LIAM STOCKER WINS 2018 TAC CUP B&F AWARD

The coveted Morrish Medal has been awarded to former Old Haileybury player Liam Stocker for his outstanding performance in the 2018 season. The now Sandringham Dragons midfielder, Stocker was awarded the 2018 Morrish Medal, which is awarded to the TAC Cup’s best and fairest player, last week after polling 18 votes to finish two votes ahead of Western Jets ball-winner Connor Thar. In his 12 TAC Cup matches this season, Stocker kicked five majors while managing an impressive 23 disposals and five tackles each game. This triumph was Sandringham’s second Morrish medallist in the club’s 27-year history, the first of which was Jackson Sketcher’s joint win with Dyson Heppell (Gippsland Power) in 2010.

2018 22UNDER22 TEAM IS NAMED Congratulations to former VAFA player, Ben Ronke, on being named in the 22Under22 side for his outstanding achievements in the 2018 season. A fan-voted concept, the 22Under22 is an initiative which recognises the best 22 players aged under 22 for the year. Before being drafted at Sydney, and before being listed at the Calder Cannons, Ronke was a senior player in the VAFA at St Bernard’s. Under Fremantle assistant coach Anthony Rock, Ronke was an integral unit in helping his team secure their premiership win over Old Trinity in 2015. On behalf of the entire VAFA community, we congratulate Ben Ronke on his stellar performance this year, and his selection in this prestigious team!

KRUSHERS BOW OUT, ROVERS JOIN MONDERS IN DECIDER PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Having suffered the ignominy of the double drop in two years, Hampton Rovers have clawed one back and will be competing in Premier C in 2019, booking their place in the decider with an ultimately assertive 33-point win over a brave Oakleigh at Trevor Barker Oval. Played under intermittent precipitation and with a slippery ball, the game reached no great heights as a spectacle, yet was in the balance with only a three-point separation at the last huddle. Going with the aid of the breeze, the Hampton camp sensed that they held the upper hand, and so it proved when they moved away with four unanswered goals to ice the day. Josh Pavlou had been pivotal to the Rovers’ cause, restricting the dangerous Aaron Cloke to only three in the wake of the champion Krusher’s recent mammoth hauls. For the winners, Christian Carnovale, Cam Hetherington and Danny Corp kicked three each, while Ant Folino snared two to go with best afield honours. Harry Boontjes was mighty for the Krushers, for whom Tim Scott also booted three, but their powerful charge - and the improbable dream - came to an end.+ TIPS Ormond v Hampton Rovers

DIVISION 1

Indicative of the depth these sides possess, the same two will also square off in the reserves, giving selectors a potential headache and no doubt leading to some individual disappointments. Strong lists they are, with a plethora of potential matchwinners. We can salivate at the thought of the Monders’ Jeremy Simon, Blair Atkins, Matt Hine and Thomas Buckley going head to head with, and trying to negate the influence of, the Rovers’ Ant Folino, Christian Carnovale, Danny Corp and Ben Kneebush for the fourth time this season. Ormond hold the bragging rights with two wins and a draw from three prior encounters, but there has never been enough substantive evidence to suggest that the Rovers are incapable of engineering a turnaround. Sandringham is the place to be at 2.30pm this Saturday....and my tip...Rovers by 5!

It’s always fitting when the grand final comes down to the two teams that stood out in the regular season, vindicating the fact that their efforts had them equal top, ten premiership points clear of third place. For Hampton, this has meant the much craved return to a higher division, for Ormond, atonement for crashing out in straight sets last year. But first, there is a monumental battle to be fought and won - for all-important silverware.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: UHS-VU VS OLD PARADIANS At the start of this season, UHS-VU had nothing to lose and Old Paradians had everything to prove. Flash forward more than 20 weeks and they’re meeting in the biggest game of the 2018 season. They’ve both shown they are capable of hurting teams across the ground both in defence and attack, but the Grand Final always tells a different tale. Last time these two sides met was only two weeks ago in the Semi Final, where UHS-VU came out on top by 16 points. Since then, the Raiders took apart one of the highest scoring teams in the division (Whitefriars) and are on an upward trajectory. It’s a mental and tactical battle as much as it is about physicality and skill. The winner will be the side who can shut down their opponents early on in front of goal. During the season, these sides met in Round 16, when UHS-VU comprehensively beat the Raiders by 57 points, holding Parade to only five goals all day. Before that in Round 4, it was the Raiders who came out 22-point winners. The Raiders in recent weeks have struggled to kick winning scores, due largely to the loss of key forward Michael Boundy and the impact on their forward structure. But his return last week (3 goals) has already steadied their ship as he proves to be a hard-to-beat target up forward. Old Parade’s recent catalyst is their ability to shut down sides and keep them to lower-thanaverage scores. Last week, they kept the highest scoring side in the competition to only eight goals and the week before that, kept UHS-VU to well below their season average. Put simply,

DIVISION 2

On the other hand, Uni High are in great shape. The Vultures are well rested and in fine form and will stop at nothing to go all the way. The key to victory will be goal scoring machine Brandon Jackson, who is in great recent form. The Vulture’s midfield bats deep and prides itself on two-way running, congesting opposition forward lines while running ahead of the ball scoring freely. Can Gerard Hawkins and his tight UHS-VU defence shut down key target Michael Boundy and the surprise pocket, James Kandilakis, who is finding form at the right time of the year? The midfield battle between James Healy and his UHS-VU spread and Parade’s Warren Jeffrey and Anthony D Souza will be one to watch. Old Paradians’ Senior Coach Ryan Smith, who is looking for Paradians’ first flag since 2015, is up against the experienced Brendan Payne who orchestrated Uni High’s Division 3 Premiership win last year and is preparing to go back-toback, on the back of a 35-4 winning record over the past two seasons This game is truly showcasing the best sides of Division 2, but there can be only one winner who holds the Cup. DIVISION 3

THEN THERE WERE TWO… The two standout sides in Division 3 for 2018 will face off on Sunday at Trevor Barker Oval and after a season that has had twists, turns, ups and downs, there is no doubt a big crowd will be there to witness the final showdown between Glen Eira and Hawthorn AFC. The sides have met three times this season, with an epic second semi final leaving the Gryphons battered and bruised but ultimately triumphant by a solitary point. Even with the week off, the toll that the match had with key players suffering injuries will not be truly known until 5pm on Sunday.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS ROUND 3 Glen Eira 20.13.135 def Hawthorn 11.14.80 ROUND 14 Glen Eira 17.8.110 def Hawthorn 15.13.103 2ND SEMI FINAL Glen Eira 10.9.69 def Hawthorn 9.14.68

FIVE KEY TALKING POINTS 1. Justin Raiti. Coming off a remarkable 34 vote season in the section B&F, Raiti is a known big game player and will be a key factor in whether or not the Hawks can salute at the end of the day. A player who leads by example, the Gryphons will certainly be putting in a lot of homework on how to stop the Hawthorn skipper.

2. Injuries. The injuries to the Gryphons may have just reached tipping point, including previous section B&F winner Jules Waras Carstensen breaking his arm and not being available from all reports for the grand final. The depth with the Gryphons has been outstanding, but is this the straw that breaks the camels back? 3. What game style will Kade Parteger and the Hawks employ to curtail the Gryphons front half? With their first two meetings being high scoring affairs, the nature of finals football is conducive to high pressure, lower scoring and contested football. Mix this with a quick deck at Trevor Barker Oval, the battle in the coaches’ box will be imperative. 4. Glen Eira’s spread of talent. To have 19 players poll votes in the Division 3 B&F showcases the Gryphons even-ness across the park. Lachlan Pound led the way with 17 votes, but had a vast selection of helpers which has meant the Gryphons have only fallen short once to date in 2018. 5. Expectation. How often does a side go through the season looking like the most dominant side and stumble at the final hurdle? There are plenty of examples at the highest level (Geelong 2008, St.Kilda 2009, Collingwood 2011, Sydney 2014), which Kade Parteger can draw inspiration. What has happened previous now falls into insignificance if the Hawks get up today.

WHY GLEN EIRA WILL WIN

WHY HAWTHORN WILL WIN

The Gryphons are a considerably professional outfit with outstanding depth, have been the best team all year and will show their talent on Sunday on a ground that will suit their game style. Stopping all their avenues to goal has been an issue for all the Division 3 clubs in 2018 and Glen Eira have ticked every box on their way to this grand final and will complete their season in a manner which is deserved of a premiership.

After securing promotion with a win the preliminary final, you could say the Hawks have nothing to lose. After being comprehensively beaten in their first encounter, their last two showdowns have been epics. You get the feeling the Hawks are creeping closer and closer and now have unlocked the way to play to beat the Gryphons if they can get the game on their terms. Class players like Justin Raiti, Nathan Raiti and Aaron Downie can all deliver on the biggest stage and are looking like a healthier side with top end talent. Have the Hawks gained enough momentum at the right time?

DIVISION 4

PARKSIDE BREAK X-MEN HEARTS, SET-UP PENULTIMATE CLASH WITH BULLS. After a disappointing performance against Canterbury in the 2015 Division 4 grand final, Parkside will once again have another chance to taste premiership glory after they accounted for St Francis Xavier by 65-points. In an afternoon that the team said was one of the greatest in the club’s history, Parkside’s win earnt them the right to be promoted to Division 3 next season, and a grand final date with the all-conquering North Brunswick Bulls. This will be the clubs second attempt at a flag since they returned to the Victorian Amateur Football Association in 2015, after a brief hiatus which saw them compete in the Northern Football League from 2003. This mouth-watering top of the table clash was destined to happen, and boy are we excited it finally is. The unquestioned premiership favourites all season, North Brunswick, squaring up against the unlikely hopefuls who are more than capable of committing the upsets of all upsets, Parkside. Meeting three times already this season, the Bulls have come away with the chocolates on all three occasions, with margins of victory sitting at 62, 26 and 49 points. This may suggest that our grand final could be a onesided affair, but after a dominating win over the X-Men, and big names Luciano Logozzo and Isaac Romano firing up-forward, Anthony Waters down back and captain Adam Wells in the middle leading the charge, Parkside should be very confident they’ll be able to knock over the best of the best. After just two blemishes on the year, North Brunswick earned their week off and deservedly so, hold the favouritism for this weekend’s do-or-die decider. Playing the role 38

of the immovable and intimidating shadow that lingered over the rest of the competition, the Bulls have had little issue accounting for their rivals, eviscerating all who stood before them by an average of 72-points. Goal-scoring dynamos Michael Salloum and the George brothers, Brendon and Jake, have been almost unstoppable up-forward all year, while the potential return of Daniel Orr to that forward line could help bolster it even more. Cameron Lee and Gavin Livingston in defence have helped the Bulls to the third best defensive rating on the year while midfielders Seamus Lynch and Peter Butler have been exquisite all season long. The Bulls haven’t been stopped when at their best this year, and it’s going to take a lot for that to change. Their matchup just two weeks ago in SemiFinal 2 saw the Bulls run out convincing 49-point winners. A nine-goal to two first half set up the outcome, and despite a strong showing from Parkside in the third term that saw them steadily reduce the margin, a mix of poor kicking in-front of goal and the dominance by the Bulls overwhelmed the Devils in the final stanza. The Bulls threeheaded forward monster led by Salloum and the George brothers combined for 10 of their sides 14 majors, while their stingy defensive back six limited Parkside to just 48-points, their second-lowest scoring output on the year. Emulating this performance will almost certainly be good enough to gift the Bulls their first Premiership since 1981, a monumental achievement for the club. Despite failing to stop the Bulls a fortnight ago, Parkside should now have an idea of at least how to slow down their opponents, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

Please email your match reports, thoughts and feelings by Sunday afternoon to jake.morris01@hotmail.com

whether that is crowding the backline and making life hard for the George brothers and Michael Salloum, or simply putting more numbers around the ball and relying on Adam Wells and co. to get the job done in the middle. Tidying up their inaccurate kicking of a fortnight ago goes without saying, which they went a long way in doing with a 15.5 (95) performance against St Francis Xavier last weekend. The amount of options up-forward the Bulls should be enough to overwhelm the Devils defence, making it hard to go past North Brunswick in this one. Look for Parkside to show a lot of heart, play gallant football and compete for four-quarters, but North Brunswick will just be too strong, too powerful and run out winners in what will be a historic day for the club, breaking their 37-year Premiership drought and ending their 18-year stay in Division 4 with a bang.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

RETROSPECTIVE

Geoff Reilley

@GeoffreyReilley

5 YEARS AGO - 2013 The Premier C preliminary final was between Marcellin and Old Ivanhoe, with Marcellin holding a five-point lead at half time in a low scoring game of football. Old Ivanhoe flexed their muscles in the third term and jumped to a 20-point lead. In the final term, Marcellin had no answers for the applied pressure and dash of the Old Ivanhoe formation, who ran out easy winners in the end 14.3 to 5.9 and earnt the right to challenge Mazenod in the Grand Final. Best players - Del Monte (8), Glavas, Hondromatidis, D Heta, H Heta, Nagel (Old Ivanhoe) and T Carlson, J Bortolotto, J Carlson, Blanch, Gasparini, Augustin (Marcellin). The Division 1 grand final was a local derby between fierce Hampton Rovers and Ormond. The Rovers had the lead at quarter time by 10 points and increased it to 27 points at half time. Ormond came out full of determination after half time but the Rovers met every challenge and increased their lead to 32 points by the final break. The final quarter was a ‘walk in the park’ for the Rovers who cantered home 17.20 to 9.10 for a fully deserved flag. Ormond had won their way through the first semi and preliminary. Best - Corp (4), Pinto (3), McNeil, Ting, Lovig, Fletcher (Hampton) and Seehusen, Tabakman (4), Upstill, Blandford, Gay, Martinov (Ormond). Old Geelong won the Reserves grand final against Ormond 12.20 to 7.8. Ormond were disappointed to lose having finished the home and away season on top of the ladder. Best - Kemp, Leahy (3), Macdonald, Quirk, Herd, Hughes (Geelong) and Clinch, Pappas, Haysom, Jacobs, Casey, Atkins (Ormond)

10 YEARS AGO - 2008 The A Section prelim between Collegians and Old Xaverians became a one-sided affair after half time as the Lions took over completely. The three quarter time score (14.10 to 6.11) was conclusive enough and the final score 16.15 to 7.12 made Collegians red hot favourites for the following week. Best players - Dixon, Adkins, Roach, Fry, Baxter, A Stone (Coll) and Chatfield, T Clarke (3), S Johnston, Douglas, Scanlon, Ryan (Xavs). A Section scribe, Jonathan Horne, made a strong point about how Collegians, not that long ago, had been in C Section and their school team were ‘not worth a cracker’. He went on to say that the C Section team now had a core of senior players who didn’t ‘jump ship’ or chase money elsewhere and were important parts of the 2008 side taking all before them - Jono Dixon, Cam Unsworth, Brock Mooney and Shura Taft were among them. Jono also noted several key old boys from the school who didn’t quite ‘nail a career’ in AFL were now key players, namely Nick Ries, Fergus Watts and Nick Stone. 50

The C Section grand final was another local derby, Ormond v Hampton Rovers, and was a tough encounter from the opening bounce. The Rovers held a one-goal lead in the first quarter but Ormond increased their intensity in the second term to lead by four goals at half time. The Rovers reduced the margin to 11 points at three quarter time but it was all Ormond in the last with Robbins on fire up forward and they went on to win 15.12 to 9.10. Best - S Keleher, Robbins (6), Duthie, Cromack, Allan, Keane (Ormond) and Ting, Devereaux, Zampaglione, Carr, Gavina, Dallas (Hampton Rovers). Bulleen Templestowe won the D1 grand final against Old Geelong in a high scoring game (21.9 to 17.21) with the OGs making a huge effort in the last quarter with 8.4 to 4.2. Best - Bone, Bain (6), McKenzie, Voglis (6), Williams, Tulloch (BT) and Vasey, Bayles, Casboult, Branigan (5), Legoe, Lyons (OG).

20 YEARS AGO - 1998 It was a premiership for Hampton Rovers in C Section in a thriller over Beaumaris 11.9 to 10.9. There was never much between the two teams for the whole day in this ‘seaside’ battle by two determined teams. Best - Hobson, Browne, Power (4), S Anderson, D Artz, Natoli (Rovers) and Sherman, A Quin, Vaughan, Fraser, Mitchell (Beaumaris). The winning line up was B: Martyn, Day, Hobson HB: Hoare, Scarlett, Ferguson C: B Artz, S Anderson, D Anderson HF: Wills, Parkinson, Blick F: Ferguson, Power, Natoli RUCKS: Browne, D Artz, McKellar (C): IC: Grimmer, Helliger, McGregor Coach: Russell Barnes Whitefriars (12.20) defeated Southbank (7.11) in the D Section grand final. Best - Power, Pawlik, Jongebloed. Winterburn, Bateman, Gillan (Whitefriars) and Morgan, McNamara, Murphy, Rhodes, Corboy, Rolfs (Southbank).

30 YEARS AGO - 1988 The A Section second semi final saw top team Old Paradians face up to Ormond (2nd). After an even first quarter, Ormond built a six-goal lead by half time and went on to a huge win (21.13 to 9.15) to earn the right of entry into the grand final. Best - M McDonald, Jobling, Kingston (3), Gilmore, Schuhkraft (6), Barnes (Ormond) and Beare, Canavan, Pritchard, M Considine, M Wood, P Considine (Old Paradians). Parkside thrashed Kew in the B Section second semi 17.17 to 8.13 after Kew had finished clear on top of the ladder. There were only two points in it at half time but Parkside ‘obliterated’ Kew in the second half. Best - Sedgwick, Cowell, L Panjari, Sansonetti, Inserra (4), Sturgess (Parkside) and Thornley, Kalac, Smith. Lord, Love, Peric (Kew). In a thrilling C Section Grand Final with never more than a goal difference throughout the game, Old THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

Melburnians defeated Old Brighton 11.10 to 10.10. Best - Johnstone, Pisarski, Brown, Bradshaw, Nichols, Cordner (OM’s) and Lade, O’Connor, Woff, Barber, Farrell, P Grant (OB). The D Section grand final was also a really close match before Preston MBOB triumphed over Hampton Rovers 10.12 to 9.11. Best - De Bono, Brydson, Turner, O’Connor, O’Brien, Johnson (Preston) and Hartshorn, Hoggett, Austin, Capp, E Melnjak, Young (Hampton Rovers).

40 YEARS AGO - 1978 It was preliminary final time for A and B Sections but grand finals for the sections below. In C Section, AJAX were fighting back after finishing on top of the ladder after Round 18 and then losing the second semifinal. Their opponents, Old Xaverians, had come from fourth position having disposed of St Kilda CBCOB in the prelim. Although getting one-point in front at half time, AJAX could not hold the Xavs who kicked away in the third term and went on to win 16.8 to 11.11. Best players – Hants, Sierakowski, Noonan, Brimacombe, Caleo, O’Sullivan (Old Xavs) and M Ritterman, Rosner, H Ritterman, Korn, Marks, Fayman (AJAX). In a thrilling D Section grand final, Old Camberwell hung on to defeat St Kevins Old Boys, 19.13 to 19.10. Best players – Hewitt, D Rimington, A Ker, Ellis, MacCallum, Horton (Old Camberwell) and Callanan, D Reynolds, Hart, Hannan (6), McKaige, Gavern. Bulleen Templestowe were too strong for St Bedes Old Collegians in the E Section grand final, 23.11 to 15.17. Best players – Johnston, Lempriere (7), Ling, Dozzi, Walton, Keast (Bulleen Templestowe) and Signoretti, Lockwood (4), Howe, Fogarty, Vaughan, O’Shannassy (St Bedes). Thornbury won the F Section premiership comfortably, 13.17 to Bulleen United’s 7.14. Best players – S Byrne, M Staff, Pietsch, G Burrows, Cowan, Fitzpatrick (Thornbury) and Morley, R Divirglio, Wilson, McLeod, A Divirglio, Slett.

50 YEARS AGO - 1968 Footscray Tech Old Boys comfortably won the C Section grand final 11.6 to St Bernard’s 7.9. Footscray led from early in the second quarter and were not headed. Best players – Smalley, Dyer, Scott, Park, McNeil, Henderson (Footscray) and Hancox, Hilbert, McCartney, Collins, Trigg, Taylor (St Bernard’s). National Bank easily won the D Section grand final 16.11 to Tooronga Malvern 7.16. Best players – Temby, R Sutherland, Brewer, Dunn, Wakefield, Lloyd (National Bank) and Steele, Madigan, G Downs, Buick, O’Hagan, Martin (Tooronga Malvern). It was a great E Section grand final with nothing between the two sides, AMP Society and Old Trinity Grammarians. AMP were the victors after coming from behind in the last few minutes, 8.11 to 7.13. Best players THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

– Metcalfe, Eddy, Eberhard, Sewell, Phelan, Crompton (AMP) and Curtis, Christie, Kennedy, Williams, Duke, Jones (Old Trinity). Ormond won the Junior 1 Section grand final, 13.14 to University 8.10. Best players – Fitts, Bourne, Hamley, Russ, Jackson, Jones (Ormond) and Astbury, Smith, Johnson, Leitch, Fielder, Brown (University).

60 YEARS AGO - 1958 In the C Section grand final, De La Salle met Parkside hoping to gain promotion to the higher section for the second consecutive season, having been runners-up to National Bank in D Section in 1957. De La established themselves early in the game and were never headed although Parkside held them scoreless in the final quarter and drew within 10 points. The D’s defenders held firm to ensure the premiership was theirs, 6.12 to 5.8. Best players – Watts, Gilfedder, Pilkington, Nesbit, Kelly, Watts (DLS) and Wasley, Randell, McDonald, Dempster, Die, Holcombe (Parkside). Port Melbourne’s dazzling second quarter left Bellfield standing as Port went on to win the D Section flag, 14.10 to 10.12. Best players – Aghan, Conway, Oliver (4), Munnery, Donohue, Eno (Port Melbourne) and Bartlett, Smith, Lawton, Chapman (3), Spencer, Getson (Bellfield). St Kilda CBC’s strong second half enabled them to take the E Section pennant, 12.14 to ANZ Bank’s 10.13. Best players – D Davidson, Walsh, Roseman, Langley (3), O’Brien, Marchmont (St Kilda CBC) and Elvish, Bendall, Goldsmid (3), Black, Spencer (ANZ). The A grade second semi final was a thriller with Collegians in control throughout until Old Xaverians staged a fighting finish and drew level with a goal kicked seconds before the final siren. In the replay, Collegians established an early lead and were never in danger of defeat! St Kilda CBC Old Boys, in an impressive debut in E Section, finished on top of the ladder and defeated Uni Reds by two points in the second semi, while ANZ Bank defeated Old Brighton by eight points in the first semi final.

70 YEARS AGO - 1948 Uni Blacks 11.22 defeated Hampton Rovers 10.10 in the A Section second semi final. Best - Doug Heywood, John Brady, Denis Cordner (Uni Blacks) and Doug Arnold, Peter Lucas, Merv Davidson (Hampton Rovers). In B Section, Old Xaverians defeated Balwyn by seven points to gain admission to A Section for the following season. Dooley, Ralph and McCluskey were the stars for the Xavs. Geelong won the C Section flag when they kicked 6.6 to Alphington’s 1.1 in the first quarter. Although Alphington fought back in the last quarter with 5.1 to 1.2, Geelong ran out winners by 21 points. 51

HOLMESGLEN UNDER 19

Marty Kelliher

PREMIER: PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW: A game with contrasting emotions and attitudes from both teams - Old Xaverians came to play and simply overpowered a very meek De La Salle who have endured a horror show in this season’s finals campaign. Best for the victors were Power, MacIsaac, Turner and the irrepressible Batten whilst Soccio was the recipient of all that hard work up the ground and kicked five. For De La, it was Ahearn who looked to break lines, along with undersized ruck Bohan, Aitken and O’Callaghan who tried valiantly.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: Given both teams have squared results across the year when they have met, it augers well for a close game and one that could showcase all that is good about U19 footy in the VAFA. In many ways, it’s a contrast of styles as Old Xaverians are all about power and intimidation to place doubts in the minds of their opponents, along with a very structured defence, pacy wingers and outside flankers to help carry the ball deep into the forward area. For Old Scotch, they work upon their two way running where they push numbers back to clog up the opposing forward area whilst slingshotting the ball up the ground where they have a number of runners making space. In all, it makes for a fascinating contest. Xavs will need to keep the ball away from Griffin, keep a tight rein on Bangs and the Loveridge boys who were all instrumental in their second semi win over De La, whereas for Scotch they need to be wary of Sheedy, the inside work of Batten, the pace outside of Troiani and keep the ball away from their tall defenders who were supreme in their win last week. After being pilloried for not selecting them last year, and having seen both sides up close over the last two weeks I’m leaning to Old Xaverians, but only because of their hatred of losing, and more particularly to this week’s opponent. Holmesglen U19 Premier Old Scotch v Old Xaverians

PREMIER RESERVE: My prognostication that Old Scotch would bring a few back to help their reserve side make a grand final was errant as SKOB, who’s senior U19 team put the cue in the rack early, were far too strong and advance to their second successive grand final in this competition with this 2nd team have a chance to register their 4th consecutive premiership. With the talent they have at their disposal, they will overcome Old Xaverians who 54

probably have their focus on the 2.00pm game. Holmesglen U19 Premier Reserve Old Xaverians v SKOB

SECTION 2: PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW: Old Carey advance to the last game of the season as a result of overcoming a spluttering Parkdale which had wobbled badly in the lead up to finals and just couldn’t get their mojo back and reclaim their spot in premier for season 2019. That in itself may undersell the achievement of Old Carey who have made significant gains in their U19 program and this victory provides an opportunity for them to go back to back. With a solitary goal to the main break, it was looking ominous for Parkdale which was only compounded when the Panthers kicked away in the third to establish an unassailable lead, subsequently cruising into the grand final.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: Both Williamstown CYMS and Old Carey are clubs on the rise, albeit in slightly different circumstances, Williamstown via the strong junior program, a club with ambitious spirit who have taken the punt with two U19 teams, and Old Carey with a burgeoning relationship with the school where they have a ready-made pool of raw talent they can nurture. This game looks to be extremely evenly matched and results across the year have mirrored that. Carey have a number of players who are the barometers for them; Chapman who has been listed in the best 11 times this year, Virgona, Dickson and Valentine have also been prominent across the year, and they will need to be watched. The Seagulls have been well led by Cutajar, who is now in his third year of U19 footy, Haines, Kellett and Costa. There’s an apocryphal story told by Martin Flanagan of ex-Carlton player Brent Crosswell tipping a draw in a match, and given the closeness across the year of these two teams, that could indeed be an option, but I’m going to flip the coin and say Williamstown, and I have no rational reason why. Holmesglen U19 Section 2 Williamstown CYMS v Old Carey

SECTION 3:

PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW:

Old Brighton won through to the grand final when they defeated a gallant Marcellin who simply lacked the firepower of their opponents. The Tonners were well led by familiar names in Hynes, Burt and Campigli and they now face up to Mazenod seeking THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

to avenge their loss two weeks ago.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: All clubs want to sell a message of hope for the future, and Mazenod have that message here. They have an exciting group of youngsters coming through, they are chasing back to back flags and they could be the group that returns their seniors to Premier B. For Old Brighton, they have a mix of older lads with some boys from the school to help them secure a flag. For Mazenod, they will need to keep an eye on Campigli (11 times listed in the best), Konoroth (9 times) and Hynes along with Branson who looks to have come from the school. Lock these guys down and they can repeat their victory of two weeks ago. For the Tonners, they need to be aware of Raffa who had been drafted into the seniors to try and halt the slide to Premier C, Sullivan who has been growing in stature late in the season, as well as Pascuzzi and Khaiyath. Given that the teams have clearly been the benchmark across the season, it has the hallmarks of being close and tight and the vanquished will be unlucky. I’m tipping a reverse of the second semi, with Old Brighton will get the win in a close one. Holmesglen U19 Section 3 Mazenod v Old Brighton

SECTION 4:

PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW:

PEGS won through to earn their second successive promotion when they defeated a gallant South Melbourne districts by two goals. In reality it was probably more comfortable then the scoreboard suggested, but that still creates a few more jangly nerves amongst Bomber supporters. For the Bloods, this was a terrific start to life in U19 footy and word has it they may be looking to enter a second team next year.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: The two best teams in the grade made it through, and to be fair PEGS will need to find an extra gear here if they are to wrest the pretty firm grip that Old McKinnon/Glen Eira have around the trophy. There may be some issues with the Gryphons as their seniors lost a few soldiers to season ending injuries and may come looking for younger players from this group to plug those gaps, so PEGS may have just that little bit of luck that’s needed. When we look at the teams, Old McKinnon/Glen Eira have Strangio and Cohen but either of them could be drafted up to the seniors, Bass has been good and McDonald too across the year. For PEGS, they will look to Constantinou who has 46 goals to this point to provide again, he has been well supported by THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2018

Gallus with 23, plus Carlini and Riley. I’m sticking with Old McKinnon/Glen Eira but it won’t all be one way traffic. I think it may well take until the last quarter for the decisive break to be made, but it’s the Gryphons flag this year. Holmesglen U19 Section 4 Old McKinnon/Glen Eira v PEGS

SECTION 5: PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW: Old Paradians bowed out after being defeated by a young De La Salle team which led all day, but struggled to put the gallant Raiders away until late in the game. It was a terrific game of footy, with Old Paradians having plenty to look forward to with some good young players coming through. For De La, they made hard work of it but when they were tested they had enough numbers and a couple of class acts who helped steady the ship and get them home.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW: Aquinas have probably been the team to beat since about Round 4, which ironically was the week after they had been beaten in a terrific game of footy by their very opponents today in De La Salle. With nothing to lose, De La can roll the dice given Aquinas were very good in their win over them two weeks ago. The Dees need more output from their leaders than they got last time, and for Aquinas it’s about recognising this massive opportunity to take some silverware back to Ringwood and start climbing through the grades. De La will need to stop the supply from the mids because up forward they have Dwyer (47), Mantel (43) and Baxter (48) who work well. They are well fed by Dodd (8 times in the best), the pocket rocket Noyes (9 times) and Leigh (7 times), so there’s plenty of players for De La to account for. The Bloods will recognise that De La as a sum are greater than their individual parts and have fantastic spirit which takes them a long way. Players that have been prominent across the year include Powell in defence along with Horrigan and White, but it’s more the collective and their overall and combined work rate which gives them a chance. I’m leaning to Aquinas to win purely because De La’s young side got the jitters when it got close last week. Aquinas more imposing bodies across the ground could also impose themselves over their more diminutive opponents, all of which are cortical ingredients in any grand final.
