THE FINAL TWO

We reach our final week of the season, and it’s been a memorable and successful season by many measures. I want to take this opportunity to thank our many volunteers and you, the supporters, for making our competition what it is today. I would particularly like to acknowledge our umpire’s association and coaches as well the dedicated and committed umpires who run out each week to adjudicate what is such a demanding game.

In Premier C the dream lives on for the Nick Bourke led Old Geelong who have both senior and reserves teams into the big one. With top team Williamstown CYMS tumbling at the final hurdle in gut wrenching fashion, this game really opens up. The week’s rest may prove to be the difference here as the Roys hard running, physicality and passion for the contest will be hard to combat, although I am sure Nick has some tricks up his sleeve.

Following a remarkable William Buck Premier season, we are left with two. Most would agree that Collegians and St Kevin’s OB were the dominant teams of season 2018 and are deserving grand finalists. The re-match of last year’s grand final promises to be a game for the ages. Last season, we witnessed St Kevin’s OB hold off a fast finishing Collegians team, who played with dare and flair in the final term into a sharp breeze to almost pinch the match.

To make the final two in our Premier competitions is an outstanding achievement. Whilst the reward of promotion is a much sought-after prize, a flag is what it is all about. Premiership flags are hard earned and are often years in the making. Whilst it is the twenty-two, and immediate staff and committee on the day, that get the accolades, it is also the ultimate reward for many others behind the scenes - past players, ex committee members, sponsors, supporters, parents, family etc. who have played their role over the years - all for the love of the game!

This year we are back at the revamped Elsternwick Park on a first-class surface and all indicators are that it will be a close, tight affair given the evenness of the teams. No doubt the spring Elsternwick wind will play a role, however thus far we have seen teams in the finals score comfortably at both ends. It’s almost too close to call with both teams stacked with talent, well coached and with strong motivation to take the prize. Will the week’s rest for Collegians prove to be the difference or will last week’s momentum building win sweep St Kevin’s OB to victory? Only time will tell.

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge your club’s community; past and present who have contributed in some way to your club’s success and just like the lead out rider in the peloton, they have played a significant role in delivering you to the finish line today. This community has helped define and shape your culture, hung in when times were not great, inspired you when you needed to dig deep and gone the extra mile when it mattered most.

In Premier B we see St Bernard’s and Old Carey battle for supremacy, with the boys from Essendon on the back of a brilliant Chad Jones season looking the goods. No doubt Carey will enjoy the space at Elsternwick Park and, after many anxious moments last week, will be well prepared to counter whatever St Bernard’s have to offer.

The big prize in VAFA footy is for everyone; that’s why it matters more, that’s what separates us, and it’s why the VAFA is MORE THAN FOOTBALL. Tim Nelson VAFA President

COLLEGIANS VS SKOB: ROUND 2

After losing the second semi-final against Collegians, St Kevin’s OB entered their match against Old Trinity with a point to prove. It’s safe to say they proved it. In one of the most impressive displays of unwavering physicality seen in recent years, SKOB opened their preliminary final with eight goals to four, sending a message to all those who questioned the 2017 premiers after losing both Sam Critchley and Stephen Gilham for the season. Nick Wood, Lachie Sullivan and Anthony Lynch set the tone with their pressure on the ball carrier and around the contest unprecedented. Barring a period in the second term where Trinity threatened to make inroads on the scoreboard, SKOB demonstrated why Amateur football is the best non-professional football in the country. Tom Jok’s inclusion after returning from Collingwood VFL duties reaped instant reward, while Mitch Brown recovered from concussion suffered in the second semi with four goals in a best-on-ground performance. By no means were Trinity poor; they were simply up against one of the best two sides in the competition. Losing Harry Tinney to a broken hand prior to the match hurt, but Anthony Scott, Sam Joyce and Jack Hunt were among those who stood tall for the T’s. The highlight of the day was certainly the guard of honour formed for retiring champion, Brendan Iezzi. Both sides and a large group of supporters lined up to send off the two-time Woodrow Medallist in an emotional and touching tribute to one of our Associations’ finest competitors. If SKOB’s performance demonstrated the strength of our competition on the field, this act alone showcased the spirit of our community off it. Bernie Dinneen’s men were sensational in 2018 and with players the ilk of Harry Thompson, Seb Nicolosi, Ben Howell and Scott taking their games to a new level this season, the future is bright for the T’s.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW 14 times have the same two sides met in consecutive grand finals in the VAFA’s top section and nine of those have been backto-back victories. History suggests SKOB has a 64% chance of victory this weekend. The second semi-final, however, may suggest otherwise. Collegians held on in the final moments of the last meeting between these two sides, with Hugh Johnson soccering the gameVAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

winner with three minutes remaining on the clock. It was an important victory for the Lions after they missed out on the minor premiership following a Round 18 loss to Old Trinity and the week’s break came at an ideal time as they look forward to welcoming Tom Penberthy, Will Johnson and Matt Singleton back into their line-up for the decider. SKOB, who spent 12 weeks on top of the ladder this season, fought valiantly in the second semi after losing Gilham, Critchley and Brown but, as mentioned earlier, really returned to form in last weekend’s preliminary final against the T’s. They will be vying for their second William Buck Premier flag after last year’s three-point victory over the Lions, while Collegians will be looking for their 18th.

HEAD TO HEAD After these two sides met on the last day in 2017, it took until Round 8 for the highlyanticipated re-match where the Lions ran out 28-point winners at Harry Trott. Fastforward to Round 12 and SKOB flipped 4

the script with a hard-fought seven-point victory at St Kevin’s College. The Lions hold a 2-1 lead after their second semi-final win two weeks ago, making it 3-3 over the past two years.

ON-BALL BATTLE Collegians: Tom Penberthy, Viv Michie, Courtney Hylton, Kenny Ong and Sam Hibbins St Kevin’s OB: Anthony Lynch, Mitch Brown, Nick Wood, Gerard Gleeson and Lachie Sullivan Stars everywhere. Absolutely everywhere.

KEY MATCH-UPS Al Fahie (Coll) vs Billy Kanakis (SKOB) – The competition’s leading goal kicker vs the William Buck Premier Team of the Year defender. This match-up alone could decide the outcome of the game. Tom Penberthy (Coll) vs Anthony Lynch (SKOB) – If Penberthy returns after a lengthy injury

layoff, he will be required to stem the ruck dominance of Lynch – a big man who uses his size as well as any player in the competition. Two Big V ruckmen going head-to-head is about as mouth-watering a prospect as you’re likely to get and the risk of playing Penberthy for the first time since Round 11 is well worth taking. Will Johnson (Coll) vs Will Coates (SKOB) – Johnson was leading the goal kicking prior to injury earlier this season with nine goals in his first two games and four outings of four goals or more from his 10 matches. This weekend, he will come up against one of, if not, the best stopper in William Buck Premier and one of the only defenders who can match Johnson’s strength. George Burbury (Coll) vs Conor Ross (SKOB) – A dream match-up of the classy Big V skipper against the defender who you would want to line up next to each week of the season.

YOUNG GUNS

X-FACTORS

Collegians: Nathan Boucher and Fraser Cameron

Collegians: Lachlan Ferguson

St Kevin’s OB: Cam Hodges and Sam Barnett

St Kevin’s OB: Tom Jok

Both sides boast young talent throughout their line-ups but expect these four to make a real impact when required. Hodges and Barnett formed part of the successful Big V U19s while both Boucher and Cameron have made an impact at VFL level this year.

It seems strange to call Ferguson and Jok ‘x-factors’ given both are bona fide stars but the fact is for either side to win, these two will need to be at the forefront.

CLAWS AND PAWS; ST BERNARDS V PANTHERS 23 weeks have come to pass since that unseasonably summer-like afternoon greeted our Premier B clubs and supporters in Round 1. No less than 90 home & away games, and three thrilling finals, later and we have arrived at the final stand-off for 2018 between the unyielding St Bernard’s (1st), and the resolute Old Carey (2nd).

REVIEW Having lost to the minor premiers, St Bernard’s, by 31 points in the second semi final the week prior, Old Carey found themselves in a fail-or-flail scenario at Elsternwick Park on Saturday 8 September in the Premier B preliminary final against the raring University Blacks (3rd). The opening half was the very definition of a see-sawing affair, as the Panthers raced to a five-goal opening term before the Blacks returned the favour in the second to hold a single-goal margin at the major break. In what was a pure illustration of the evenness of our top-tier Premier B sides, the final quarter exemplified this section’s breadth of talent and our players’ hunger for success. A point down at the third quarter break, Old Carey managed to level the scores almost immediately at the start of the fourth before a goal-for-goal style of play prevailed. With a huge eight goals kicked in this final 25 minutes of play, the Blacks John Vrodos (2), Lachlan Knight (1) and Lachlan Huntington (3) all played important roles with their respective majors. You simply could not overlook Old Carey’s Morgan Evans, who kicked four majors for the match, three of which were slotted in the fourth, or Jason Ashby’s goal with less than a minute remaining, which paved the way for the Panther’s four-point win.

PREVIEW CURRENT FORM St Bernard’s – WWWLW Old Carey - WLWWW

LAST TIME THEY MET We needn’t search too far to discern how these sides have fared against each other in the past, as their last encounter was just a fortnight ago in the second semi final at Box Hill City oval. In that instance, St Bernard’s retained their top dog persona with a 31-point final siren victory. Though a seemingly straightforward result, the day didn’t go all the Snow Dog’s way when the Panthers pounced to VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

an early 16-point lead in the opening term, a lead that could have undoubtedly been more greater given their 21 inside 50s to St Bernard’s six. But, true to character and their ranking as the best offensive and defensive side in the Premier B competition, the determined St Bernard’s crew repelled the Panthers barrage and were quick to bite back with a five goal second quarter while limiting the fast starter’s to a meagre point. The match continued in a similar fashion in the latter half, with the Bernard’s Caven boys, Michael (4), Thomas and Simon, putting on a masterclass around the ground. The outstanding effort from the Old Carey side, especially considering the loss of their inspirational captain, Cam Jones, during the match with a broken leg, could not be missed. Players like Kristian Jaksch (2), Sam Cust and Henry Schade were particular highlights.

ESTABLISHED PERFORMERS St Bernard’s and Old Carey both have proven performers who are undoubtedly brilliant in their own right, a fact which was abundantly clear in the 2018 Premier B Team of the Year selection when the teams had five and four selections, respectively. For St Bernard’s, Chad Jones (GT Moore Medallist), Adam Bentick, Tom Sullivan and Connor Riley are just a handful from the starting line-up who have commanded the respect of the competition with their 2018 seasons. Not to be overlooked, the Caven

brothers in Tom, Simon and Michael will be a sight to see, as this will be their second senior grand final appearance together in three years (2015, 2018), and Tom will also be notching a remarkable 200 senior games milestone. Players the ilk of Kristian Jaksch, Henry Schade, Sam Cust and Andrew Sloane come to mind when thinking of the Panther’s bona fide stars, but their win over Uni Blacks in the preliminary final was just a small reminder of the versatility and young talent which they can assert. Returning from VFL duties this weekend, look for VAFA Big V U19s captain, Charlie Thomas, to make things difficult for Mark Riley’s men.

FINAL THOUGHTS Old Carey’s re-entry into William Buck Premier after a two year stint in Premier B has been no accident. Under the remarkable guidance of senior coach, Michael Tarrant, the Panthers have completely rebuilt their list in a enviable fashion since 2015/16 and will be fired up for another flag. St Bernard’s have also been through a major rebuild in this period, and would be thrilled at the progress of their debutants over the year. In Round 1, the Snow Dog’s had seven players debut, five of which were U19 players, and a number of these would be considered highly for a feature this weekend.

OLD GEELONG DOWN CYs TO CLINCH GRAND FINAL BERTH In thrilling fashion, Old Geelong upsurged minor premier Williamstown CYMS by one GRAND FINAL PREVIEW point at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday to book the final spot in a premiership bout against Fitzroy FC. With the Premier C finals series proving closer than ever, with both Week 1 finals matches decided by seven points or less, the Preliminary Final between first and third exceeded all expectations. CY started strong, kicking three goals to two in the opening term to lead by seven points at the first break. OG’s forward Samuel Anderson, who days earlier finished equal third in the Zachariah medal count, kicked the opening goal of the second term to bring the lead back within one point. CY soon ramped up their pressure and piled on the next three majors, but Old Geelong were able to put one more on the board with Tom Balcombe kicking his second of the day to bring it within two straight kicks heading into half time. Returning for the third term, it was Old Geelong who found the advantage, slotting two goals to one to bring the margin within six point at the final break, before Christian Hatzis and Jonathan Read kicked the opening two goals of the final quarter to put OG in front. But CY weren’t going down without a fight, slotting the next two majors to edge two points in front. And in a nervous finish, it was ultimately minor scores that pushed OG in front and gifted them the trifecta; the win, a grand final berth and a promotion to Premier B next season. Balcombe was the OGs most prolific goal scorer with his two majors, while Ed Keach and Joshua Hutley were named Best on Ground for the winners. Joel Hogarth and Jack Gray each added two majors to CY’s final score, while Tom Johnstone and 2018 Zachariah Medalist Yuma Hemphill were best afield for the defeated.

As the final two teams left standing, Fitzroy FC and Old Geelong will play off for the premiership cup at Trevor Barker Oval this Saturday.

2018 ENCOUNTERS Round 3 saw Fitzroy FC thrash Old Geelong 153-64 at Brunswick St Oval. Six unanswered goals in the opening term allowed the Roys take an early lead, while an additional 15 second half majors saw the margin ultimately stretch to 89 points. The Roys boasted 11 individual goal kickers to Old Geelong’s five, with Roys skipper Julian Turner leading the way with five majors, while Matthew Bird finished with four for the OGs. Ted Clayton was named Best on Ground for Fitzroy in the win, kicking three himself. Meeting again at Como Park in Round 11, Fitzroy FC outlasted Old Geelong for a hard won four point victory. Old Geelong held a slight lead at both the first and second quarter breaks, before the Roys edged in front and built a 16-point buffer by three quarter time. In a tense final quarter, OG outscored the Roys in their quest to chase down the win, but fell four agonising points short by the final siren. OG’s Matthew Bird was again prolific with three goals, while midfielder Will Sloss also stood up for Old Geelong. Sam Baker top scored for the Roys with three majors, with teammate Tom Biscaro named Best on Ground in the win.

FORM COMING IN With Fitzroy FC losing their second-to-last game of the home and away season to Williamstown CYMS, it was sweet revenge when the Roys edged past CY by three points in their semi final match-up to advance straight into the grand final.

Old Geelong took the longer route to the grand final, eliminating Old Camberwell from the finals series with a seven-point win, before upsetting minor premiers’ CY by one point in the preliminary final last week. VAFA CONGRATULATES YOU IN REACHING THE MILESTONE

200

Congratulations to St Bernards' TOM 'ROCK' CAVEN - One of St Bernard's and the VAFA's greatest players, Tom Caven will play his 200th ‘senior’ game in this week’s Premier B Grand Final. A St Bernard's junior, Tom won our U19 Best & Fairest before making his senior debut in 2007 and has been the ‘the Rock’ of St Bernard's defence ever since. One of the club’s most decorated players, Tom has won two senior Best & Fairests, multiple VAFA Big V jumpers, captained the club to the 2015 Premier Division Premiership and named Full Back in St Bernard's team of the half century. A great player, first class clubman and super bloke. All at St Bernard's salute Tom on his fine career and wish him well in his 200th.

150

Congratulations to Old Xaverians' TRISTAN PARKER - tristan joined the club from Xavier College in 2009, playing in U19 Grand Finals in his first two years. In 2011, Tristan progressed to the reserves, playing in the 2012 Grand Final and cracking a premiership with the 3rds in 2013. Since then he has been an important member of the reserves, playing in the 2014 Grand Final and then helping to win the 2015 flag. Tristan has been captain for the last two years, leading from the front both on and off the field, also playing three senior games for the club. Good luck for your 8th Grand Final and hopefully your 3rd flag at Old Xavs this weekend. Well done on achieving this milestone Hollywood, hopefully many more games in the ‘red and black’ to come.

150

Congratulations to St Bernards' NIC COOKE - Best wishes to Nic Cooke who will line up for his 150th ‘senior’ game for St Bernard's in this week’s Grand Final. A St Bernard's junior, Nic progressed into U19 ranks before making his senior debut in 2009. Since then Nic has been a regular member of the senior side. Along the way, Nic won VAFA U19 Big V honours, was runner-up in the senior B&F in 2012 and played in our 2015 Premier Division Premiership team. Congrats to Nic on his 150th and a terrific career to date, we look forward to many more to come. Well played ‘Cooka’. 17

LEAGUE BEST AND FAIREST WINNERS On Wednesday 12 September 2018, the VAFA held their annual Woodrow Medal & VAFA Awards Night at the Crown River Room. While the night was centralised around the William Buck Premier Woodrow Medal vote count, our association’s best and fairest recipients, outstanding umpires and rising stars were acknowledged and awarded on the occasion too. Many VAFA legends and life members, both young and old, were in attendance to celebrate yet another successful year of amateur football and a shared love of the game. Congratulations to everyone who was recognised for their stellar performance over the course of the year, particularly Ayce Cordy from University Blues who was crowned the 2018 Woodrow Medallist.

The previous record was 72 polled by Harry Tinney in 2014, but Brown’s dominant performance included 12 5-vote matches and two of those the perfect 10. Brown was at his best with four goals and a BOG display in the preliminary final as he looks ahead to this weekend’s decider with SKOB.

WOODROW MEDAL REVIEW At the VAFA’s night of nights at the Crown River Room, the evening reached a climax with University Blues ruckman Ayce Cordy capping off an excellent season, by securing the accolade of the 2018 Woodrow Medal. Polling 23 votes, he finished four points clear of runner-up Anthony Scott, the class midfielder from Old Trinity. Collegians’ Viv Michie was third one vote further back. Cordy, a former Western Bulldogs & Williamstown VFL product, had a slow start to the VAFA William Buck Premier Season, failing to register a vote until Round 8, showcasing the Blues stuttering beginning to 2018. Following his best on ground performance against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers, the athleticism and versatility of Cordy shone from this point on. In many ways it could be argued that Ayce near-on single handedly kept the University club away from relegation in William Buck Premier, polling maximum votes against Old Brighton (Rd 10), De La Salle (Rd 11), St Kevin’s Old Boys (Rd 13), Collegians (Rd 14), St Bedes/Mentone Tigers (Rd 16) &

Old Scotch (Rd 18) to be the 2018 Woodrow Medallist. The importance of Cordy was no further exemplified than his three-vote performance in Round 18, with the loser of University Blues & Old Scotch facing relegation, the big man was influential not only in the ruck but through his contested marking around the ground. St Kevin’s Old Boys Mitch Brown, Old Trinity’s Anthony Scott and Old Melburnians’ Josh Freezer all featured in the first half of the season, with only the T’s ball magnet continuing on to finish the season on the podium of the prestigious award. Scott was only one vote behind Cordy coming into the final game, but back-to-back BOG’s by Gabriel Hamilton from Old Trinity left him four votes short at the end of the season. Ayce Cordy becomes the 7th recipient of the Woodrow Medal from University Blues Football Club, and the first since Ross Young tied with St Bernard’s Adam Bentick in 2015.

ANTHONY ZIMMERMAN - 2018 GRILL’D MEN’S RISING STAR Determined to be a mainstay in the seniors line-up, despite his eligibility to still play in the U19’s competition, Zimmerman’s energetic game-style saw him flourish within this team, as exemplified by his 18 matches in William Buck Premier. With a blatant appetite for goals, Zimmerman also notched an impressive 26 goals throughout the year, with a game-high bag of four coming in Round 17 against Old Xaverians.

As part of the festivities of Wednesday evening’s Woodrow Medal & VAFA Awards Night, the Grill’d Men’s Rising Star award was determined. From the talented pool of 19 budding superstars nominated for this prestigious award throughout the home & away season, a shortlist of six players were in the running to take out top honours; Anthony Zimmerman (Old Brighton), Ben Huggard (St Bernard’s), Cam Hodges (St Kevin’s OB), Geordie Nagle (De La Salle), Liam Murphy (De La Salle) and Shaun Lovell (Mazenod).

With an undoubtedly difficult decision at hand, the selectors unanimously agreed on a winner; Anthony Zimmerman from Old Brighton. Zimmerman was nominated for this award in Round 7 of the 2018 season, after a blistering match against Old Melburnians really showcased the youngster’s ability to dominate around contests. In turn, Zimmerman earnt his third best on ground accolade from this performance and propelled him into the thick of potential Rising Star glory. d

19

To top off his fantastic season, Zimmerman was also named in the 2018 William Buck Premier Team of the Year; another resounding testament to his brilliant and consistent season. Congratulations on taking out the 2018 Grill’d Men’s Rising Star, Anthony.

WHAT THE CLUB SAID: “Anthony first started playing For Old Brighton in 2016 as an U19 player. His strengths as a footballer include good leg speed, willingness to tackle and apply pressure at the contest.” “Anthony is renowned for being highly energised and kicking barrels at training. He is still eligible to play U19’s and trains with that group prior to senior training on Thursdays.”

PREMIER B WHITE DIVISION 2

Old Haileybury claimed their first VAFA Wilson Women’s flag when they overcame Old Scotch at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday 19 August 2018. After finishing fourth at the end of the home & away season, compared to Old Scotch in second, the Hearts showed utter determination en route to the grand final after inspiring wins over Old Brighton and Beaumaris. Undaunted by their previous two encounters with the Scotch Stars, both of which were three-goal plus losses, the Hearts put the foot down from the opening bounce in this ultimate decider, racing to a four goal first term thanks to the handywork of Romy Teubler (1), Sarah Casey (1), Jordan Shanks (1) and Danielle Frawley (1). Though the Scotch Stars did manage to stunt the Hearts score-power from there onwards, restricting them to just four points for the remaining three quarters, the standout work-rate from Charlotte Serafini, Greta Larkey (1) and Emily Jarman just wasn’t enough to impact the scoreboard beyond their final 2.7 score. For the victorious Haileybury, who emerged as eventual 13-point premiers, Casey (1) was absolutely marvellous with her solitary goal and around the ground efforts, earning the BOG honours accordingly.

Whitefriars FC celebrated their inaugural season in style by taking out the Division 2 Premiership with a 21-point victory over Old Melburnians at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday 19 August 2018. Accuracy won out in the end, with OMFC’s 2.9 split failing to match the Friars straight seven majors. Eilish Boyd opened the match with the Friars first of the day, before OMFC’s Isabelle Smith switched the lead before the first siren with her own shot on goal. Two unanswered goals to the Friars in the second term put the navy and gold ahead at half time, though OMFC’s Georgia Dunlop minimised the damage early in the third term. It was the Friars from then on out, with the side kicking the last four goals of the game to take the result beyond doubt. Boyd stood tall on the big stage with her four goal haul for the Friars, alongside Best on Ground honours, with Kate Tull also a standout. For the defeated OMFC, it was Athena Williamson and Clare Fraser who impressed. Best on Ground Medal: Eilish Boyd (Whitefriars)

Hawthorn AFC made it back-to-back flags for the club, beating Ivanhoe by 24 points at Elsternwick Park Oval in the Division 1 decider on Sunday 19 August 2018. The Hawks started strong with Laura Castleden opening proceedings with the first major of the day, before a contested standstill in the second term meant neither side added a goal to their tallies. The Ivies kickstarted their attack in the third term, when Tahlia Day kicked truly to close the margin down to seven points, but it would ultimately prove the Ivies last, with final quarter goals to Hawthorn’s Molly Johnston and Lauren Cosson sealing the win for the brown and gold. Hawthorn’s Penny Brown won back-to-back Best on Ground medals with her performance, while Cosson and Diamantina Kloufetos also starred. The win is the Hawks second in two years, after they beat St Kevin’s by 17 points in the Women’s Development Division 4 decider last year.

Two final quarter goals gifted the Westbourne Grammarians’ their first Division 3 flag, with the club running out 11-point winners over Preston Bullants at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday 19 August 2018. Having beat the Bullants just over a month ago in the home & away season, the Warriors backed it up with another win over the minor premiers on the biggest occasion of all. The Bullants started well early, albeit inaccurately, posting 1.4 on the board in the opening term, before the Warriors responded with their own unanswered 1.5 to take a one point lead into the main break. With each side slotting a goal apiece in the third ‘premiership’ quarter and with scores remaining separated by a lone point, it was the Warriors who found that something extra to kick the two goals and cement the victory. Brianna Herman booted two goals for the Warriors, while teammate Lauren Spark was judged Best on Ground. Melissa Halton and Jacara Thomas admirably led the Bullants, with both adding to their teams’ score.

VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

ORMOND TRIUMPH IN NAIL-BITING CONTEST Motivation fuelled by nine seasons without a flag, coupled with desire for retribution following last year’s straightsets exit, has propelled Ormond to the title of Division 1 premiers for 2018. Only headed twice in this epic battle at Trevor Barker Oval - very early and very late - the Monders needed steely resolve and a bit of magic from hero and GF Medallist Max Kennedy to overcome the desperate charge of the Rovers.

THE MATCH Befitting the occasion and the high stakes, the opening session was played with unerring intensity, dominated by stoppages and almost bereft of freeflowing passages. The Rovers opened the scoring with a fine left foot snap in their first foray forward, following what was a scrappy period where most of the action occurred around the boundary between the two fifty-metre arcs. After the ten minute mark, Ormond managed to get the ball more regularly into their forward half, and made more of their chances with goals at 14, 21 and 23 minutes. It was then Hampton’s turn to attack incessantly during time-on, but their inability to manufacture clear shots at the target left Ormond with an 11 point buffer at the first break. The Monders took only two minutes to open up the first decisive gap of the game in the second quarter, but Hampton replied soon after. With the crowd (which included an interested onlooker in Max Gawn) swelling and the arena bathed in sunshine, the play also began to open up a bit, although scoring was still at a premium. An undisciplined act from an Ormond defender gifted Ben Kneebush a 25 metre penalty and unmissable goal at the 15 minute mark, and the difference was back to six points. Majors to the Monders at 22 and 32 minutes reestablished the 17 point buffer. Fifty seconds in to the third term and Ormond skipped away again, when a pinpoint pass from Max Kennedy found a teammate near the goal square. The game reverted to a hard but high tempo slog for the next ten minutes, before Kennedy earned a free and slotted a beautiful drop punt from tight in the pocket. At this stage the lead had reached an ominous 30 points, and Hampton had it all to do. At 21 minutes they clawed one back, followed by another sixty seconds later. So the quarter ended where it started, VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

the margin still at 17 points. No one needed to remind the Rovers that they had to come out all guns blazing in the fourth and final quarter of Division 1 football for 2018, and they had reduced the deficit to two goals by the three minute mark. The man who invented the word frenzy may very well have had this kind of scenario in mind, so relentlessly did Hampton attack, and the game was being acted out almost exclusively in their forward half. A set shot from Danny Corp brought them back within three points, and the crowd erupted when Ant Folino dribbled one through from close range to give Rovers the lead with half the quarter to play. When Folino was tackled high straight in front six minutes later, the subsequent goal had taken Hampton to an unlikely 10-point lead, and they were on a roll. But just like the tide ebbs and flows, Ormond lifted and began to find some run. They had conceded 4.3 without reply, but on their next run forward, Kennedy roved and snapped accurately. Two minutes later at the other end, an attempted “Daicos” from Folino agonisingly shaved the post, and Hampton led by 5. At 27 minutes in, enter the man of the moment. Running along the boundary and on his wrong foot, Max Kennedy 22

conjured up a right foot banana to wrestle back a solitary point lead for the Monders. When a difficult long range attempt at the other end could only muster a behind, things were all tied up with surely only a few minutes left. An errant clearing kick from Hampton’s back pocket landed at a contest, then a couple of handballs later the ball was in the arms of Sam Mason, who sent it long towards the goalsquare, where Blair Atkins stood firm to take the contested mark dead in front - game, set and match.

SUMMARY Just for that last quarter alone, this should go down as one of the great Grand Finals. The relentless comeback from Hampton, then the turnaround from Ormond, sparked by a five-goal hero, to snatch it back again. A large and vociferous crowd, who saw a truly great player in Blair Atkins appropriately kick the winning goal. Kyle Pinto, Liam McCartney, Ben Kneebush and Josh Broadley were heroic for Hampton, yet in the end Ormond had so many contributors other than the two mentioned above. The VAFA could not have hoped for a better showcase for our great game, one which the upcoming Premier Section showdowns will find hard to trump.

UNI ON A HIGH AFTER SECOND STRAIGHT FLAG David Huntley was moved onto Brandon Jackson in the third and quietened down the Divisional Best and Fairest. UHS-VU forced key forward Michael Boundy up the ground in search of possessions and removed his impact in the third term. Parade’s Rob Valente exited the field with what looked to be a serious knee injury and was put straight on the ice to end the third quarter. The Vultures’ Aaron Christensen snapped one off the pack and stretched the threequarter time margin to 20 points. Brandon Jackson kick started the Vultures last term when he converted his third and extended his sides lead to 26 points. Waters then goaled again after the Vultures locked the ball in their territory. The spotlight was back on Jackson with his monster fourth goal from outside 50.

After 94 games over a long and brutal season, it is the UHS-VU boys who have been crowned the Division 2 Premiers in what was a near perfect 2018, after defeating Old Paradians by 55 points in the Grand Final. The Vultures have completed the perfect double-jump, just 12 months after their Division 3 Premiership.

REVIEW Michael Deligiorgis was at full back, taking on competition Best and Fairest Brandon Jackson. While at the other end, the Vultures’ James Ford had the job on key forward Michael Boundy. Old Paradians started tight, packing every contest, flooding the backline and attempting to shut down the Vultures dominance from the middle. Tom Waters was dominant early with four marks, finally converting UHS-VU’s first goal at the 16-minute mark. Andrew D’Souza was soon to fire back with the Raider’s first to bring his side’s momentum up. The Raider’s Will Gilmore went off injured as Uni High’s Tom Waters kicked his second. An elusive running goal from Raider James Kandilakis in the dying minutes of the first quarter brought Old Parade back into the game. UHS-VU forced the Raiders wide and blocked up the corridor to keep the ball in their half for the first quarter. However, it was Parade who capitalised on their rare forward opportunities, with limited forward 50 entries resulting in two goals. Uni High’s wasted opportunities resulted in the Vultures going into the first break 2.4 to 2.0, only four points

up after controlling the first quarter. UHS-VU’s Brandon Jackson missed another key shot to open the second term, but redeemed himself with a big running goal after a Dustin Martin style fend-off from a quick transition minutes later. Small forward harassment and pressure around every contest in Uni’s forward 50 forced the Raiders to turn the ball over and give Jackson his second of the quarter. The Vultures lifted again half way through the term with their pressure and pace, led by James Dimattina across half forward. Matt Derham converted for the Raider’s third and minutes later, Byron Walton scrapped one off the pack and booted it around the corner from the boundary, giving their side half a sniff going into half time. But Waters took one back for the Vultures and kicked a hard-running goal from just outside fifty to push the lead back out to 12 points. Minutes later, Nick Devereux marked and kicked truly for the Vulture’s sixth going into the main break. The Vulture’s went into half-time with eight more scoring shots, but only led by 18 points. The Raiders came into the third quarter with all guns blazing, booting the first goal in the first minute. Minutes later, a Michael Mahoney set shot goal reduced the Vultures lead to only five points. UHS-VU, however, were not backing down, with a big Waters mark and goal lifting them again. A big quarter from Vulture Essa Ramsey was vital as he booted a key goal from a stoppage. 23

Not long after it was Christensen, Dimattina and Devereux who added final quarter majors for UHS. UHS-VU managed to break open the game in the final term, putting Parade to the sword, booting five unanswered goals (and nine to two after halftime) to seal their premiership victory. For the Raiders, David Huntley and Ryan Jeffrey battled hard across the backline, while Byron Walton was gallant up forward. Tom Waters walked away with five goals, along with Jackson’s four goals for the Vultures, while Nick Devereux was awarded the A.R Fellows Medal for his best on ground Grand Final performance. Overall, the game was won on the back of discipline of team structure and team work from all of UHS-VU coach Brendan Payne’s men, who only dropped one game all season.

RESERVES GRAND FINAL: WHITEFRIARS VS MHSOB Favourites Whitefriars defeated a gallant MHSOB side at Coburg City Oval by 22 points in the Division 2 Reserve Grand Final. The Friars kicked away in the third quarter to seal victory. Charles McWhinney was best for the Unicorns in what was a tough day, while Tom Gaston kicked two for the Friars, and Corey Dineen booted three goals and was awarded the Best On Ground Grand Final Medal.

VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

WHAT A DIFFERENCE TWELVE MONTHS MAKES. When Glen Eira achieved the ultimate success on a blustery day at Sandringham, I am sure all those involved with the Gryphons would have taken the time to reflect on the journey the club has taken over the past year. 2017 resulted in relegation from Division 2, in the cruellest of circumstances, winning 7 games and a percentage of over 90, which was still was not enough to see them face the drop down to Division 3. Their opponents, the Hawthorn AFC, also rebounded from a disappointing 2017 where they found themselves relegated without registering a victory. The Hawks are a club on the rise and their strength was shown in reaching the final game of the Division 3 season of 2018. In reviewing the complete season, Glen Eira were the class side of the year, only falling once and overcoming major adversity with various injuries at important times of the season. Such was the depth of the club that their Reserves & Under 19s also were present on Grand Final day participating for premiership glory. Coming into the season decider, question marks of whether their injury toll and their dominance all season could eventually bring them unstuck at the final hurdle. The Hawks finished second on the ladder and came up short in the 2nd semi final by a solitary point. After edging closer each game to Glen Eira, some thought that this were the stepping stones needed to eventually topple the ladder leaders. Hawthorn’s form over the

VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

last quarter of the season wasn’t at the levels in which they started the year, however, their class could not be denied. Come Grand Final day of 2018, both sides had their claims to hold up the Premiership Cup and claim bragging rights for their return to Division 2 in 2019. As is the case with all contests with so much to play for, the opening stanza was physical, contested and both sides exerting a lot of pressure around the football. Lachlan Pound opened the account for the Gryphons, in a warning sign for the Hawthorn coaching staff given his goal kicking ability throughout the season. The Hawks steadied with goals to Thomas Bowler & Richard Ogge taking them into the quarter time break 3 points in front. A blistering start to the 2nd term meant the lads from Rathmines shot out to a 15-point lead through goals from Coady Travaglia & James Ridley, both within the first couple of minutes. The Gryphons responded quickly through Andrew Barrett’s first major, before the arm wrestle resumed which was evident in the first 30 minutes of the contest. Thomas Bowler again bobbed up to kick a goal which took the Hawks 14 points in front at Half Time. Hawthorn were rising with confidence as the game wore on, but there was no doubt from the Glen Eira outfit that with their systems and on the wide expanses of Sandringham that they were up to their necks in the contest.

24

An old football cliché’ is the third quarter is the “premiership quarter”. Glen Eira will look back in years to come and adhere to this adage piling on 5 goals, with Andrew Barrett kicking three goals in the term. The Hawks held tough with goals from Nathan Raiti & Steven Wintle, but the momentum was certainly with the Gryphons heading into the final term with a lead of 3 points in a low scoring affair. Trevor Barker Oval rewards those that run hard and Glen Eira ran out the game on top of the ground, peppering the goals in the final term, and punishing the Hawks off halfback. However they couldn’t put Hawthorn away, not capitalising on their opportunities. Andrew Barrett again fired early in the quarter to put the Gryphons 10 points up. After the Gryphons kicked the opening goal of the term, Callum Bilton-Gough gave the Hawks some lift with a goal to put them within a kick at around the half way point of the term but Glen Eira’s defensive structures were sublime, and were capped off with a Brent Connelly goal on the siren to result in a 15 point victory. The Division 3 season was capped off in a style that warranted one of the tightest seasons in recent history, and Glen Eira walk up to Division 2 with a deserving premiership.

BULLS COMPLETE FAIRYTALE SEASON, ECLIPSE PARKSIDE FOR FIRST FLAG IN 37-YEARS prowess began to take shape shortly after. Four majors in a row to end the opening term from Matthew David, Robert Santacroce, Davor Lucevic and Brendon George, as well as goal-saving smother from Lucevic and a touched ball from Justin Fistrovic on the goal-line, gifted the Bulls a 13-point lead heading into quarter time. The second quarter began very much like the way the first finished, with an incredible goal from North Brunswick livewire Seamus Lynch from the boundary to push it out to a 19-point gap. This was followed by majors from Peter Butler, Jake George, Matthew David and Brandon George, with the only goal from Parkside coming from Michael Romano in a very difficult second stanza. The Bulls forward pressure was immense in this term, forcing error after error from Parkside’s back six, keeping the ball locked away in their forward half for the majority of the term. A healthy 41-point lead saw the Bulls almost have this one wrapped up at the half way mark. North Brunswick, the premier artist of the Division 4 competition for season 2018, have completed their year-long masterpiece in overwhelming fashion, downing a gallant Parkside outfit by 36-points in a fantastic game of football at Garvey Oval. In a history making afternoon for the green and gold, the Bulls put an exclamation mark on their already historic season, claiming their first premiership since 1981, and enter the Division 3 competition after a gruelling 18-year stay in Division 4. A five-goal to one second quarter was the difference maker in the clash, with the Bulls taking a resounding 41-point lead into the main break, a lead they would refuse to squander. Brendon George was the hero infront of the big sticks on the day, booting five majors and carrying most of the load up-forward, with his brother Jake George and Michael Salloum combining for just two

goals on the afternoon. In just his 10th game in the Bulls seniors’ side, ruckman Chris Bateman was awarded Best on Ground honours while an unlikely scoring threat in big man Matthew David was next in line, booting two crucial majors and having a huge impact across the ground. For Parkside, Luciano Logozzo was easily his sides’ best, kicking three, and was an integral part of the Red-Devils run across the park. Michael Romano booted two while Isaac Romano and Matthew Soligo also stood out and put in fantastic performances. The Red-Devils looked ominous early, booting the first two majors of the afternoon through Luciano Logozzo, with the second of the two coming off a spectacular hanger taken in Parkside’s forward pocket, where he would make no mistake to give Parkside an early 11-point lead. This small advantage was short lived however, as the Bulls scoring

25

Much like their encounter a fortnight ago, Parkside used their third term to take control of the game and begin their monumental fight back. Unfortunately for the Devils though, it was also the quarter of missed opportunities, with a score-line of 3.7 to 3.3 making it seem their dominance that quarter had left little impact in the grand scheme of things. An early goal to Peter Butler pushed the margin out to 49-points, but goals to Cameron McFadyen, Luciano Logozzo and Michael Romano, as well as the seven behinds in the term, brought the margin to a manageable 30-point deficit. The Red-Devils were in striking distance, but were unable to finish the quarter strongly, allowing Brendon George to kick his fourth after the siren, and push the margin back out to 37-points. Parkside continued on its spirited fightback early in the final term, booting the first two majors of the quarter through Matthew Soligo and Anthony Waters, reducing the margin to just 24-points and grabbing all of the momentum for what was setting up to be a thrilling final term. But in typical North Brunswick fashion, the Bulls steadied through their big bodies, with Brendon George booting his fifth shortly after, Stephen Monteleone kicking his first and Chris Bateman flexing his muscles in the middle to all but end the Parkside fight back. The always reliable Michael Salloum put the cream on a historic cake when he booted his first at the 25-minute mark to push the margin out to 37-points and celebrations could commence. The Bulls were Premiers after a 37-year drought, and you better believe they were going to savour this one. VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

HOLMESGLEN U19 PREMIER Four goals to one in the final quarter helped Old Xaverians to a thrilling nine-point victory over Old Scotch at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday 9 September 2018. Xavs trailed by as much as 17 points in the third quarter before BOG Medallist Lucas Soccio booted the first two goals of the final term in the opening 13 minutes. Scotch did hit back through a Noah Croes major but another two goals to Ed Ralph and Angus Sheedy helped seal the sensational come-from behind victory. Soccio was named best afield from the officiating umpires, while James Dalbosco and Thomas Hart were standouts. Croes was the only multiple goal kicker for the Cardinals and Tom Blenheim was their most prolific player. Best on Ground Medal: Lucas Soccio (Old Xaverians)

HOLMESGLEN U19 PREMIER RESERVE Old Xaverians commenced their day on Sunday 9 September 2018 in fine fashion as they took out the U19 Premier Reserve flag with a 28-point victory over St Kevin’s OB. 5 YEARS AGO - 2013 In Premier C Section, Old Ivanhoe had won the right to play Mazenod in the Grand Final. Mazenod had finished on top after Round 18, three games clear of Marcellin, Old Ivanhoe and Monash Blues. Mazenod started in fine fashion with seven goals to three in the first quarter, with Heath Black exceedingly dangerous up forward. Old Ivanhoe bounced back in the second quarter and were only two points behind. It was an even third quarter with three points the difference at the final break and in a great last quarter Old Ivanhoe secured the premiership 12.12 to 11.10. Best - Jessop (5), Low, Geilings, Vella, Gieschen, Johnson (Old Ivan) and Bonner, Inglis, Kelly, Chamberlain, Phibbs, Oldman (Mazenod). Sam Geilings was the Michael Ritterman Medallist as best player. Old Brighton defeated Old Trinity for the Premier B Flag in another closely fought contest. After a strong first quarter, the ‘Tonners’ found Old Trinity challenging, taking a one-point lead by half time. The match remained close right through to the final siren when Old Brighton celebrated their 12.11 to 11.9 victory. Best - Perrett, Mariani (3), Fallon, Cavallaro, Bruin, Skewes (Brighton) and Hunt, Wildsmith, Pacconi, Ramsden, Iezzi, Hamilton (Trinity). Tom Mentiplay (Old Brighton) was the Cordner Medallist. The Old Xaverians broke a three-year drought when they won the Premier Section flag, their 13th, by defeating St Bedes/Mentone Tigers comfortably 13.17 to 6.9. In a ‘triple’ for the Xavs they also won the Reserves and Thirds flags. Best - Waller, Prouse, Kennedy, Williams (3), Colbert, Shaw (Old Xavs) and Shaikaib, Doherty, Garside, McGettigan, L Wintle, O’Kearney (StBMT). Chris Waller (Old Xavs) was the Jock Nelson Medallist.

10 YEARS AGO - 2008 In an unprecedented effort, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers completed the feat of winning C, B and A Sections under the leadership of Luke Beveridge as their senior coach. There were eight players who had been in each of the three premiership teams and this was one of the greatest success stories in the VAFA’s history. The A Section premiership was at the expense of Collegians; 10.17 to 5.17 with Collegians unable to register a goal in the first half. Best - L Wintle, Anstey, Groves, Hazell, Poyston, P Wintle (StBMT) and Robbins, Baxter, Holst, Blumfield, Adkins, Ries (Collegians). Marcellin Old Collegians won their fourth B Section flag when they defeated Old Essendon 11.8 to 8.8 in a hard fought, low scoring contest. Best - Crapper, Considine, Symes, Augustin, Spence, Marson (Marcellin) and Goullet, Saville, Wilson, Towner, Ryan, Williams (Old Ess). Ormond and Hampton Rovers fought out the C Section Grand final with the Rovers coming back into the game in the third quarter after trailing by four goals at half time. Ormond surged again in the final quarter to run our relatively easy winners 15.12 to 9.10. Best - S Keleher, M Robbins (6), Duthie, Cromack, Allan, Keane (Ormond) and Ting, Devereaux, Zampaglione, Carr, Gravina, Dallas (Rovers). This was Ormond’s second C Grade flag, having previously won C Grade way back in 1934.

20 YEARS AGO - 1998 The Old Xaverians demolished Old Scotch in the Grand Final by kicking 11 goals to five in the second half. The final score of 21.13 to 11.12 proved the domination of the club at that time with Old Xaverians winning their fourth A Section title in a row, equalling the records of Ormond (19871990), Uni Blacks (1946-49) and Old Scotch (1931-34). The Xavs’ Reserves’ team also took out the title by a huge margin along with their U19 team in the Premier Junior Section. Best players Wood, Blood, Cranage, Woodruff, Hede (3), Dann (Old Xavs) and Wilson, Spiden, Pritchard, Price, Phillips, Laird (Old Scotch). The B Section Grand final was a thriller with Old Ivanhoe probably regretting their in-accuracy in front of goal but Marcellin fully deserved their 9.9 to 8.14 victory. The lead had changed at each break before Marcellin won this, their third B Section pennant. Best - Seabury, Cox, Slattery, M Boysen, S Boysen, Cronin (Marcellin) and Donaldson, Young, Tully, Veal, Mansfield, Russian (Old Ivanhoe). It was another thriller in C Section as Hampton Rovers held off a valiant Beaumaris to win 11.9 to 10.9 in what was becoming a great rivalry in the seaside area. The last quarter was terrific football with goal for goal. Best - Hobson, Browne, Power (4), S Aanderson, D Artz, Natoli and Sherman, A Quin, Vaughan, Fraser, Mitchell (Beaumaris). Luke Gallant (St Bernard’s) won the Woodrow Medal for the A Section Best & Fairest, Bernie Dineen (Marcellin) took out the B Section award, the G T Moore Medal, and Murray Pitts the C Section award, the L S Zachariah Medal.

30 YEARS AGO - 1988 The A Section Grand Final was expected to be an epic between Old Xaverians and Ormond. Old Xaverians had gone to great lengths to increase their intensity after losing the second semi and had performed very well in their prelim final win over Old Paradians. Xav’s coach Danny Corcoran, whilst ‘glad to be in there again with a chance’ reminded his players that the grand final on Sunday would depend on ‘how much they want it’. Danny also went on to say ‘his players’ character and in some instances football career was on the line’. Ormond’s Mike McArthur-Allen made no bones about it when he was quoted ‘I think we’ll win because we have a better spread of talent, particularly around the edges’ and ‘Ormond players have a better record when it comes to winning the harder contests’. Fighting words indeed! In an especially vigorous match, it was again Ormond who came out on top by six goals, 14.11 to 8.11, their 7th A section premiership. In an extremely tough B Section Grand Final, Parkside 15.8 easily defeated Kew 5.18, their highest achievement in their VAFA history and an immediate follow on from finishing in fourth place in the two preceding seasons. It was Old Melburnians 11.10 as premiers in C Section defeating Old Brighton 10.10 in another absorbing amateur grand final. John Moir (Old Scotch) won the J N Woodrow Medal as the best and fairest player in A Section whilst Brett Burden (Kew) won the B Section Medal (the G T Moore). G P Mulcahy (St Kevins Old Boys) won the L S Zachariah Medal as best and fairest in C Section. 31

Paul Schuhkraft (Ormond) led the A Section goalkicking with 64 goals, Chris Freeman (Parkside) in B Section with 69 and Andrew Pryor (Old Brighton) in C Section with 59.

40 YEARS AGO - 1978 Old Scotch 16.16 defeated North Old Boys 16.11 in the A Section Grand final. Uni Blues and Ivanhoe were third and fourth respectively. It was Old Melburnians’ flag in B Section, 18.16 over Old Paradians 11.10. Old Xaverians took home the A J Stewart premiership cup in C Section. The best and fairest awards went to C A Price (Marcellin) in A Section; R I Cordner (Old Melburnians) in B Section and Michael Ritterman (AJAX) in C Section.

50 YEARS AGO - 1968 The all-powerful Old Paradians 17.23 easily defeated Caulfield Grammarians 7.8 in the A Section Grand Final. Parade also won the reserves and junior two flags, completing an excellent season for the club. P M Moran (Uni Blues) won the J N Woodrow Medal. Ormond 14.9 defeated Monash Blues for the B Section premiership and also won the reserves and junior 1 flags as well as promotion to A Section. The B Section best & fairest (G T Moore Medal) was shared by D H Hone (Monash Blues) and M C McKenzie (Old Xaverians). Greg James (Ormond) won his fourth consecutive leading goal kicking award with 73 goals. Footscray Tech Old Boys 11.6 defeated St Bernard’s Old Collegians in the C Section Grand Final with R Mannix (Footscray Tech OB) winning the L S Zachariah Medal.

60 YEARS AGO - 1958 Collegians 9.6 defeated Old Scotch 8.6 in the A Section Grand Final (their 10th A Section flag); Old Paradians 21.13 defeated Uni Blacks 15.14 in B Section and De La Salle 6.12 defeated Parkside 5.8 in C Section. The highly decorated Geoff Hibbins won the J N Woodrow Medal in A Section and Collegians’ P J Bennett won the goalkicking (74 goals); John Winneke (Uni Blacks) the G T Moore Medal in B Section and R Kilner won the L S Zachariah Medal in C Section.

70 YEARS AGO - 1948 The mighty Uni Blacks team won their 5th consecutive A Section premiership (allowing for No Competition from 1940 to 1945) kicking 15.11 to Old Melburnians 7.14 and their star G D Cordner won the J N Woodrow Medal. Old Xaverians 11.7 defeated Brunswick 9.16 in B Section and Geelong 12.13 defeated Alphington 9.10 in C Section. John Kennedy (Teachers College) took out the G T Moore Medal in B Section with R S Clarke (Glenhuntly) and C Robinson (East Caulfield) sharing the L S Zachariah Medal. The were no records available for the leading goal kickers in 1948. VAFA GRAND FINAL 2018

Owen Hinson

THANKS As another season comes to a close, I’d like to say a few thanks to everyone involved in making the VAFA the best place to umpire. Firstly, thank you to the entire VAFA community. Players, spectators, officials and clubs show a great respect for umpires, even when sometimes it may be hard to do! We particularly thank the Team Managers and Club Leaders who so often go out of their way to welcome us to their club. There are not many competitions where the umpires are so lucky as to be invited to join the teams after the game – and your efforts in making this a welcoming place are truly appreciated. The continued dedication to advancing umpiring from the VAFA Board and Management ensures we have the support to umpire to the very best of our abilities – and the tireless work from umpire operations manager (and fellow scribe of this column) Haydn O’Connor has kept the show on the road every week despite the constant challenges! Having only a short ‘pre-season’, stepping into the role just prior to the first bounce, he has done an amazing job to manage training and coaching throughout the EP Oval unavailability and renovation. How good’s footy!

Haydn O’Connor

I’d also like to extend a huge thanks to our coaches, led by Tony Hales, Bernie Jephson

and Ryan O’Shea. These gentlemen, along with Mark Gibson, Guy Hexter, Zachary Schloeffel, John Hall, Shane Herbert, Asha Hinton, Jack Punshon, Terry Gunn and our Matchday Observers provide a huge service to the entire umpiring group. Our extensive list of alumni officiating in state league and AFL competition (including in finals) is a testament to the quality of coaching we receive. You would be hardpressed to find a more dedicated coaching staff anywhere in the umpiring world. Thank you again for the time you commit to helping us achieve our goals. Thank you also to our families. To the parents – thank you for driving across town for those 9:20 games, and for cleaning the mud off the boots! To the partners – thank you for putting up with us being absent on training nights and match days, for listening to our grumbling, and for not complaining when we are sitting on the couch with sore legs! Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to fulfill our umpiring passion.

FATHER-DAUGHTER RULE? Over the last few years we have seen a number of new female umpires take to the field, including a few under the

Father-Daughter rule. Julia and Ray Stokes have officiated together a number of times, including with son/brother Frank, and Katie Gillespie joins father Rob and brother Jackson in the lime green. This year we’ve gone even further, with father and daughter combination Bruce and Emily Lister umpiring together in the field in the Premier Reserve Women’s Grand Final. We’d love to see even more families on the track together next year!

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR! Finally, thank you all our umpires for what has been an amazing year. Our umpiring standards are unbelievably high, we have a great vibe and camaraderie within the group, and without doubt we will send more of our ranks to the VFL to continue their umpiring careers. Sadly, we will also have some umpires retire – but we hope that you stay connected with the group. To those running today, congratulations for being selected to officiate our highest matches.
