Welcome to season 2019

George Voyage – VAFA President

On behalf of the VAFA I am delighted to welcome everyone to the opening weekend of the 2019 season.

organisation and all of our clubs into the future. Apart from this critical core issue, some of our other key objectives for the season include:

The preparation time is over. The familiar cries across the city of the last few months ‘that promised recruit isn’t with us’ or ‘we lost a few chasing money’ is perhaps offset by ‘we’ve picked up a couple who can hopefully play’ or ‘we will be very young’ has me thinking. William Buck Director, Lindsay Holloway, highlighted that in a modern world where community activity seems to get less and less, the VAFA plays a key role in creating a forum for all people to be involved in a community. A safe place. A place to meet friends and make new ones. To get fit. To be part of a team and essentially to be part of a community. To play or officiate or support to the best of each person’s ability. Respect for everyone is a keystone of the VAFA. Respect for our opponents, our club mates, and our umpires, officials and volunteers. There have been some club moves during the off season. We welcome RMIT WFA as the newest club into our women’s competition. I’m certain this famous institution will have a wonderful impact in our Association.

To ensure the VAFA continues to be the very best operator and competition of Australian rules football in our community.

To ensure the VAFA’s well-skilled and highly engaged team continues to manage the competition and its associated systems and events efficiently and to the highest order.

To ensure the redevelopment of Elsternwick Park is seen as an asset that all our clubs are proud to own and be a part of.

A place to meet friends and make new ones.

We also have a very challenging representative programme for 2019 which will include another four outings from our senior men’s, senior women’s, B-D4 and U19’s teams. Welcome to all new players, officials, umpires and volunteers. We trust you will have a very positive VAFA experience.

Everything is set for a fantastic 2019 as our young women and men begin their six-month trek in search of the Holy Grail.

Regrettably, two clubs from our outer eastern area have folded or merged, whilst two of our iconic divisional clubs are consolidating as one team clubs in our Thirds competition. This emphasises the challenges faced and the key objective is to ensure financial stability and sustainability of our

Good luck to everyone. Game on!

2019 WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER PREVIEW Nick Armistead

University Blues The off-season chat has revolved largely around Uni Blues and, more specifically, the quality of personnel they’ve attracted to the club under new senior coach, Heath Jamieson. Josh Green, Cam O’Shea and Meyrick Buchanan lead a host of talented inclusions of the Blues look to improve upon their seven wins from 2018.

St Kevin’s OB 2018 was another successful season for SKOB, claiming their second William Buck Premier flag in two years. The off-season brought about change with the departures of Jay Schulz, Sam Fisher, Pele Manivong and Stephen Gilham, but the forward 50 was bolstered again with the addition of North Melbourne and Carlton big man, Jarrad Waite, and former OM Matthew Arnot. Big V reps and premiership players Tom Jok (Essendon) and Ned Reeves (Hawthorn) were drafted to their respective AFL squads, while they’ve several VFL-listed stars; including, Billy Kanakis and Lachie Sullivan.

De La Salle De La were one of a handful of sides battling to avoid relegation in Round 18 last year but with a top end as talented as Tom Humphrey, Jake Williams, Sam Williams, Antony Forato, Jason Tutt and Adrian Indovino, it was always a long shot to go down. Peter Schwab has taken the reins as senior coach and will need to galvanise the group after the departures of Tutt, Brendan Close and Liam Murphy.

Old Xaverians Xavs are every chance to bounce back to their 2016 form after attracting players the ilk of Rohan Bewick, Chris Prowse, Nick Prowse and Will Hams over the offseason. While the retirements of star midfielders Tomi Johnston and Ben Kennedy cannot be underestimated, as well as the departure of stalwart Murphy Ambrose, expect Xavs to improve upon their seven wins from last year under the watchful eye of Paul Satterley.

Collegians It was a heart-breaking end to 2018 for the Lions after suffering their second grand final loss by less than a goal. However, the return of newly-appointed co-captain Kalem Post will give them an important injection of strength and aggression in the ruck, and potentially offset some of their losses; Hugh Johnson, Kyle Emley, Christian Middleton and George Burbury (overseas). Led by Courtney Hylton, Sam Hibbins, Viv Michie and Lachie Ferguson, expect the Lions to hit hard come Round 1.

Old Melburnians Much like Uni Blues, OMs have created significant buzz over the off-season after adding Jackson Paine, Andrew Tashevski-Beckwith, Elliot Kavanagh, Adrian Karatzas and Nathan Drummond to their list. While they lose Matthew Arnot and U19 Big V representative Angus Hicks, OMs are primed to make a move in 2019.

Old Trinity It was an emotional end to the T’s 2018 campaign with the farewell of club and VAFA champion, Brendan Iezzi, following their preliminary final loss to SKOB. Luther Juric and Thomas Young have departed the club, while Ned Hunt is living abroad. They will rely on internal improvement from young guns such as Tom Mason and Anthony Larkey while the additions of Brandon Wood and Austin Hodge will have T’s supporters salivating.

St Bernard’s The big question for St Bernard’s has been whether Chad Jones and Tom Sullivan will play in 2019. While Sullivan was announced as Port Fairy’s newest gun recruit two weeks ago, Jones is seemingly unlikely to pull on the boots at all. Fingers crossed I’m wrong. However, premiership star Nathan Kazuro leads a host of ins upon their return to William Buck Premier.

Old Brighton Brighton impressed beyond all expectations last year as they earnt a finals berth on the back of gut running, aggressive attack on the ball and some of the most talented young players in the competition. Harry Hill and Dylan Verney proved a lethal combination as co-captains in 2018 alongside Rising Star winner Anthony Zimmerman (VFL-listed) and will no doubt play a vital role in the Tonners pushing for finals again.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2019

Old Carey The Panthers earnt promotion to William Buck Premier after falling short to the Snowdogs in last year’s Premier B decider. They’ve since added former Uni Black Tyrone Bean to their stocks while losing Charlie Thompson and Jordan Ceppi.

PREMIER B PREVIEW Jake Morris

Competition aplenty as Premier B returns

Beaumaris

Old Geelong

After winning 11 games and missing out on finals action by mere percentage in 2018, ‘Bluey’ McKenna and the Sharks will be circling once again with their eye on a bounce back campaign. Dropping three of their last four games was the Sharks downfall in 2018, so there is no doubt they have the talent and coaching to feature prominently in Premier B, just putting it all together will be Guy McKenna’s biggest task.

A Division 1 flag in 2016 and two years in Premier C has the Ogs’ fit for a deep run into Premier B. A disappointing result at the hands of the Roys’ in the Premier C Grand Final last year soured what was an otherwise successful season for the team, but with Dixon joining Cal Wood as co-captains, and Nick Bourke at the helm, it is ‘Ogwards and Upwards’ for Old Geelong.

Old Haileyburians

Caulfield Grammarians

Like 2016, the Bloods endured a rough Premier B campaign last year, managing just five wins and a 7th placed finish. Like the Monash Blues, Head Coach Daniel Ward must be instructing his players to use that season as a learning curve to make them better for the long run. A talented list led by James Paul and Lachlan Treverton should see this proud club right the ship in 2019.

The Fields’ return to Premier B with a familiar face in tow, former AFL star Brendon Goddard will don the navy blue this year, a huge boost to an already promising squad. An impressive four-game winning streak to end the year set up a top four finish, though a 19-point loss at the hands of the Uni Blacks ended their dream run to Premiership silverware. Watch the Fields’ to feature prominently in 2019.

Old Scotch Despite winning six games and staying competitive in most outings, the Cardinals will once again have to return to Premier B, finishing just one game back of that dreaded relegation zone. 15 wins in 2017 should give the Cards’ some confidence they can return to William Buck Premier, and with new captain Gene van der Broek leading the way, it would take a brave soul to pick against them doing so.

Fitzroy After just one incredibly successful season in the Premier C competition, the Roys’ are now back in Premier B and on the hunt for back-to-back flags. Club stalwart and legend Rory Angiolella hung up the boots after over 20 years of loyal service to the club which will no doubt impact the Roys’ midfield, but with the help of second-year captain Julian Turner and co, the big shoes will be filled.

Monash Blues

ROUND 1 TIPS

Consecutive finals appearances prior to last season meant that 2018’s four-win campaign and 8th placed finished may have come as a shock to the young up-and-coming side. A fresh approach should be the mindset for coach Mark Passador and his men, with new names Tom Le Lievre and Jack Kernan, as well as the returning Taylor Cameron, the Blues one-year finals hiatus should be a thing of the past at the end 2019.

After two years of steady improvement which saw them win five and six games respectively, new Head Coach Owen Lalor has expressed his intent to make 2019 the year for his revamped squad to make that leap towards the top half of the competition. The addition of former AFL young gun Harley Balic to mix with skipper Charlie Dillon in the Vultures midfield could spearhead a surprising 2019 campaign.

St Bedes/Mentone Tigers return to Premier B for the first time since 2016 after a disappointing fourwin season last year. Despite some list changes, the biggest off-season addition may be new Head Coach and former VAFA President Michael Hazell. A Premiership player with the Tigers from 2008, Hazell brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to a squad that’s ripe to return to William Buck Premier.

PREMIER C PREVIEW Old Camberwell

As we bid farewell to Fitzroy and Old Geelong upon their promotion to Premier B as well as Peninsula and St Mary’s to Division 1, we welcome four new sides in Premier C for the 2019 season. Joining us from the section above will be Ajax and Mazenod while Ormond and Hampton Rovers return after one of the all-time great finishes to the Division 1 Grand Final.

The Wellers were finalists in 2018 after going on a six-game winning streak throughout the season. While they’ve lost star midfielder and Zachariah Medallist Ben Hart to Caulfield Grammarians, the Wellers will push for the four yet again with Robbie Campbell and Simon Bennett leading largely the same squad this season.

Ajax

Old Ivanhoe

2018 proved the toughest season in several years for the Jackas after they suffered relegation from Premier B on the back of just three wins. They’ve lost Adam Caplan and Ash Krakauer but have always got a strong number of young kids coming through their juniors. The appointment of former Old Trinity coach Adam Andrews is of the utmost importance after he took the T’s to consecutive grand finals from 2015-16.

Old Ivanhoe is another team whose list in 2018 far exceeded the 7-11 win/loss record they finished with. Losses of midfielders Carl Groth and Justin Powick over the off-season have been offset somewhat by the huge inclusion of former SBMT forward, Luke Velluto. Mal Mitris will cause headaches forward or back and Adrian Del Monte is going around again as the Hoers attempt to add consistency to their game in 2019.

Hampton Rovers

Old Mentonians

The Rovers were agonisingly close to Division 1 glory last year after falling to the Monders by six points after trailing by as much as five goals. Led by Big V representative, Christian Carnovale, the Rovers will want to solidify their position in Premier C after suffering the double drop the two seasons prior.

Old Mentonians claimed seven wins of their own in 2018 after officially avoiding relation in Round 17. They’ve retained most of their list from last season and the likes of Daniel Maitland, Darcy Brown, Lachlan Boyd, Luke Hull, Comrey Edgeworth and Kyle Conlon means the Panthers can be a force this year.

Marcellin

Ormond

The Eagles were the middle of the pack last season after claiming fifth spot with nine wins and finishing two games outside the four. There hasn’t been a huge turnover of players as opposed to last season which will allow the Eagles to grow under the guidance of senior coach Glenn Cox and with Andrew Kay and Daniel McMahon leading the charge.

Back in Premier C and with a premiership medallion draped around their neck, expect the Monders to give it a real shake this season. Tom Buckley is an exceptional leader, the Hine boys and Blair Atkins are next level and Max Kennedy is a young star – need I say more?

ROUND 1 TIPS

Mazenod Like Ajax, the Nodders suffered relegation from Premier B on the back of just three wins last year. They’ve since lost a handful of senior players from their ranks; including, Goy Lok, Shaun Lovell, Liam Riley and Stephen Welsford. However, new senior coach Dylan Cousins will work alongside Rob Mann, Liam Welsford and other senior players to ensure the Nodders regain their winning ways.

Mother & son combined for MS half marathon Running a half marathon to raise awareness and funds for people living with multiple sclerosis is certainly a challenge, but to do so while pushing your wheelchairbound mother is simply incredible. Old Scotch FC’s Josh Richards did just that when he took part in the MS Melbourne Half-Marathon last weekend. Richards, who will be playing U23’s for the Cardinals in 2019, decided to partake in this year’s event after watching his mother, Sharee, suffer from MS for almost 10 years. “The main reason I decided to contribute to this cause is because I have seen the daily struggle that people living with MS go through and I’d like to help them,” Richards said. “In other words, I have the ability to make a difference for MS sufferers, so why wouldn’t I?” The VAFA congratulates Josh on an outstanding and awe-inspiring initiative!

OM’s sparkle at Lighting Premiership Old Melburnians kick-started their 2019 campaign in style, claiming the women’s Lightning Premiership following a thrilling one-point victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in last weekend’s final at Keysborough Playing Fields. OM’s, who were the only team to win all three of their round robin matches earlier in the day, kicked the first goal of the final before the Tigers hit back at the start of the second half. An incredible defensive display from the OM’s backline helped them stave off several Tiger attacks late in the game before a rushed behind in the final 30 seconds of the match handed them victory. The Tigers were outstanding across the day and won two of their three games en route to the final, as were all teams; Parkdale Vultures, Albert Park, St Mary’s Salesian and St Bernard’s. The VAFA thanks all players, officials and support staff who took part in today’s Lightning Premiership and gives special thanks to Old Mentonians Football Club for the use of their outstanding facilities and assistance across the day. DIVISION 1: 2019 PREVIEW PENINSULA OLD BOYS:

Welcome to arguably the most even Division of 2019, where another 18 weeks of Home & Away triumph, defeat & clichés await.

One of the hardest trips in the VAFA when the ship is sailing, the Pirates in their 40th season have a new coach in Shane Mottram, a new skipper in Sam Glenn and new attitude in rebounding after consecutive drops in 2017 & 2018. Looking at some of the returning faces and new names, the trip down Nepean Highway could give some opposition some wobbly legs on deck.

KEW: The return of Premiership Coach Ian Aitken announced in September last year showed that the Bears mean business for the upcoming season. After a 6-12 campaign in 2018, an immediate upward spike in results may not happen in 2019, but the platform to return to Premier C may be laid this year.

PRAHRAN ASSUMPTION: The Two Blues stormed home winning four of their last five in 2018 to finish a game outside finals. With a class on ball brigade, they have progressed from Division 2 Premiers in 2017 to now ready to progress to higher levels in Division 1. Ashley Mills is taking the reigns for a seventh consecutive season showcasing solidity at Toorak Park.

OAKLEIGH: Oakleigh come into 2019 on the back of Preliminary Final defeat and should be confident that with now settling into a new facility that they should be one of the contenders for the Division 1 season. The Krushers are certainly more than one-trick pony under the tutelage of Chris Moore, however, with a bloke like Aaron Cloke in your stable, giddy-up at W.A Scammell Reserve.

PRESTON BULLANTS: The Bullants lay claim to a VAFA Coach Of The Year in George Wakim, reigning Best & Fairest Winner Sean Calcedo, 2017 Pepper Medalist Dean Calcedo, and a culture of success from winning premierships since their entry into the VAFA. Should improve on a 9-9 2018 season.

OLD PARADIANS: Grand Finalists in 2018 in Division 2, the lads from Garvey Oval take on one of the hardest challenges in VAFA Football, the promotion without the premiership. Bringing in Phil Plunkett to lead the charges, along with a strongly run off-field department, Old Paradians will look to use the same formula that took them to 15 wins to reach their potential in this highly competitive division.

ST MARY’S SALESIAN The changes off-field show the Saints are looking to bounce back from a tough year in Premier C with new coach Brett Gatehouse taking the helm. A young list, with a lot of X-Factor, Ferndale Park is a fortress when St Mary’s have it on their terms.

THERRY PENOLA Playing one of the most epic Semi Finals in recent memory last season, the Lions left 2018 with many questions unanswered given their fire power. A new coach in Damian Peverill, which comes with continued professionalism left by Dean Rioli, the Lions should be in the mix for 2019 if they keep their core list together.

DIVISION 2: 2019 PREVIEW Anna Pavlou

Hawthorn follow as they enter Division 2 after dropping only five games last season, while close finals losses to Glen Eira (by 1 point and 15 points respectively) will leave them hungry for redemption in 2019. The Hawks are known for highpressure footy and there’s no doubt new player and Assistant Coach Jordan Hallam will be leading the Hawks from the front from Round 1. Peter Hutchinson Medal winner Justin Raiti is on track for another remarkable season up forward and around the ground in 2019.

Welcome to 2019 in Division 2! What was an outstanding year of football in 2018 will surely be matched this season, with the introduction of Glen Eira, Hawthorn, Brunswick and Ivanhoe into the mix of equally capable and eager teams in a bustling competition. Let’s delve in and see what each team is bringing to the table, aiming to go all the way in 2019. We welcome Brunswick FC into Division 2 from Division 1. The NOBS won three games last season, all by margins of under 20 points, meaning they’ve been working to improve their skills around the footy for 2019. The plans to improve their game style will be led and built on, with Senior Coach Anthony Palmer getting another shot to show the talent his Brunswick list consists of. The addition of 2012 Premiership Players Chris Ford and Michael O’Donoghue will be vital in bringing the competitive spirit from the past back into the side who are keen to rejuvenate in 2019.

Ivanhoe have made the move from Division 1, where they now have the chance to prove their worth in Division 2. The recent appointment of former Ivanhoe Juniors and Diamond Valley League Champion Mario Bandera as Senior Coach, will bring a new lease of life to the team. Melbourne High School Old Boys (MHSOB) are looking to improve on what turned out to be an even season in 2018. The Unicorns finished in the middle of the table after winning and losing nine matches, a credit to their free running attacking style of play. The recruitment of Scott Braithwaite amongst a few old Melbourne High School boys proves positive signs for the Unicorns, who have the depth to push their team to the top to play high intensity footy in 2019.

Bulleen Templestowe are here again and are looking to improve on an up and down season in 2018 that showed real promise for their young list. The Bullants finished 2018 with five wins and a draw, and showed some exciting attacking football during their campaign. Senior Coach Jason Reynolds has now put a strong emphasis on disposal efficiency, decision making, contested football, defensive transition, fitness, and “team first” with a “one club culture”. With good numbers on the track, don’t be surprised if the Bullants come biting in 2019. Glen Eira are on their way up from their 15-point Grand Final win against Hawthorn in Division 3 last season, with the aim to cement their position in Division 2. The Gryphons only lost one game in 2018, but Senior Coach John Edgar has been busy working on the intensity and fast ball movement in the pre-season so to remain competitive against the higher-skilled Division 2 sides. Glen Eira’s multifacetted forward line will be vital in their bid to not only retain their spot in the higher division, but also push for a finals berth.

Whitefriars were ahead of the Division 2 pack last season, falling to a poised Old Paradians in the Preliminary Final in 2018. Losing only four games last year, Whitefriars proved that on their day, they could match it with the top teams. The Friars will again look to captain coach Kristan Height who turned their on-field fortunes around and built a strong forward set up again to push for finals. The loss of star forward Lewis Neate may prove costly, but with the likes of pocket-rocket Michael Nitas, the Friars will still have a hard-to-beat multifacetted forward line.

DIVISION 3: 2019 PREVIEW North Brunswick

After a fixture restructure, Division 3 is left with eight teams and a 14-game fixture in 2019. Emmaus St Leo’s have made the drop from Division 2, while North Brunswick and Parkside make the jump from Division 4 after strong 2018 campaignss. The existing Division 3 sides are a very even group based on last years results so it shapes to be a fascinating and relatively even season. Here’s a look at the teams squaring up for Premiership glory…

2018 Record (Division 4) 18 Wins/2 Losses/ 208.37% Premiers It was a drought breaking premiership for North Brunswick in Division 4 with their first flag since 1981 and re-entry into Division 3 after an 18-year absence. Winning is a good habit to get into, and the Bulls rampaged in 2018 with their 18-2 record in Seniors and 19-1 in the Reserves. They shouldn’t have any issues jumping up to the higher grade, with he quick double jump from lower divisions is an achievable feat in recent seasons (Kew, West Brunswick etc.).

Aquinas OC 2018 Record (Division 3) 10 Wins/ 9 Losses/121.53% 4th Aquinas has made a habit of winning premierships recently with Division 4 success in 2017 followed by an U19’s flag last year. This would give the bloods a great platform to build from in 2019 after an early finals exit last year. Senior coach Ash Naulty would be excited by a strong number of recruits coming in. One of the main contenders.

Parkside 2018 Record (Division 4) 15 Wins/6 Losses/ 193.30% Runners Up In 2018, the devils had a great run of wins before falling just short of North Brunswick in both Senior and Reserves Grand Finals in what will no doubt be a great rivalry renewed in Division 3 this year. There were some outstanding individual performances last year with 3 players (Marco Creek, Adam Wells & Ian Romano) all finishing in the top 5 of the league so they clearly have the top end talent to compete in this grade. Club legend Robbie Wise will take the helm as Senior Coach this season.

Canterbury 2018 Record (Division 3) 9 Wins/9 Losses/118.06% 7th Although on face value season 2018 may have been disappointing, it was a much better record than their ladder position suggested as they were only a game out of the Top 4. There are whispers going around they have recruited very astutely in the off-season, giving themselves the best possible chance to return to finals action. They’ll be looking for big seasons from B&F winner Sam Murphy and Leading Goalkicker Martin Astbury.

Richmond Central 2018 Record (Division 3) 7 Wins/11 Losses/ 90.86% 8th Despite finishing 8th in 2018, the Snakes still finished six games above relegation and were only three games out of the Top 4 in Division 3. Spearhead Jake Munro is a huge loss for the club, but they are looking reasonably healthy with plenty of clearances coming in and the introduction of their women’s side this season.

Emmaus St Leo’s 2018 Record (Division 2) 4 Wins/14 Losses/64.41% 9th It was a disappointing Division 2 campaign for Emmaus St Leo’s in 2018 after losing the relegation battle to St Johns in the final round. The Animals will be looking to regroup this season under new coach Ian Ledder after three seasons in the higher division. Emmaus have recruited plenty of exciting young talent through their affiliation with Deakin University in recent seasons, led by club veterans Paul Baranello and Chris Beluszar.

Manningham Cobras

ROUND 1 TIPS

2018 Record (Division 3) 10 Wins/8 Losses/ 114.53% 5th Such was the nature of the 2018 competition, the Cobras were one of two teams to miss out on finals by just percentage. The boys from Manningham will take plenty of confidence from their 56 point win over eventual Grand Finalists, Hawthorn, in Round 15 last season and will only have to improve a little to be right in the frame for a Top 4 finish.

They should be strongly fancied given they are the highest rated team from last year to remain in the division, not to mention their dangerous forward line with Dale Collins, Benjamin Johnson and Eqbal combining for over 100 goals in 2018. DIVISION 4: 2019 PREVIEW Box Hill North

What an ending to the Division 4 section in 2018. North Brunswick’s premiership victory sees them progress to Division 3, leaving this section for the first time in 18 years, while Parkside’s season-long performance will also see them lodged in Division 3 action in 2019. The departure of Mt Lilydale from the VAFA sets this section with nine teams and a bye round for the year, but the race for premiership silverware is well and truly on with the clubs who remain.

An impressively creative recruitment drive during the off-season was a clear demonstration of Box Hill North’s desire to succeed in the this section for 2019. With fresh faces around the club, expect the Demons to raise hell this year.

Masala/Dandenong Despite their bottom of the ladder finish to their Division 4 campaign in 2018, Masala Dandenong embark on a new chapter in 2019 which begins first and foremost with their name change to Masala Dandenong Football Club. With strengthened ties to their local community, the Tigers will look to continue their competitive end-of-season form from 2018, where they scalped their two wins for the year against the finals-bound South Melbourne Districts and Mt Lilydale.

St Francis Xavier St Francis Xavier will be hoping to emulate their blistering beginnings from 2018, where they won six of their opening seven rounds. With the Chin brothers leading the charge again, expect the X-Men to push for promotion again this season.

South Melbourne Districts

Albert Park

After a couple of tough seasons, South Melbourne Districts regrouped in 2018 to put together a 10-win season which saw them finish in the Top 4. Despite losing to St Francis Xavier in the first week of finals action, the Swans will be buoyed by their improved performance and will expect nothing less than another chance for premiership silverware in 2019.

A superb off-season centred on club growth and development sees Albert Park poised to take the Division 4 competition by storm in 2019. With the appointment of new senior playing coach, David Jenkins, expect to see a new game style by the Falcons which is sure to see them better their solitary win from 2018.

South Mornington

La Trobe University

South Mornington improved significantly in 2018 with nine wins for the season. With the relationship between them and their juniors continually improving, expect the Tigers to go a step further and play finals in 2019.

In 2018, La Trobe University followed in the footsteps of their ninth-placed predecessors, Albert Park, in Division 3 and concluded their season with one win. However, with the redevelopment of their usual home ground at the La Trobe University campus in Bundoora complete and looking truly immaculate, they look primed and ready to roll into the season. With senior coach Alan Ezard back at the helm, and Division 3 Team of the Year player Matthew Ogle in the line-up, the Trobers could be a real contender in 2019.

Elsternwick Finishing 6th was not an overly representative indication of Elsternwick’s 2018 campaign, as they concluded with nine wins and only one match out of a finals berth. With their new surface at Elsternwick Park set to be ready early in the season, the Wickers will be keen to improve in 2019. Look for Justin Hunter and Julian Yeatman to pose a significant threat for defenders in the Wickers forward 50.

ROUND 1 TIPS

Eley Park While they were two wins out of finals action in 2018, Eley Park sat comfortably above the bottom three despite losing their last four games of the season. The Sharks held a very respectable 8-6 record after 14 rounds, so finals is certainly not off the cards if they can sustain that form this season. Expect fireworks at Shark Park in 2019. WILSON WOMEN’S: 2019 PREVIEW Alisha Min

Premier B

When the VAFA commenced a women’s football competition in its milestone 125th year in 2017, 40 teams from 35 made their mark and took part in the movement. Fast forward three years later, and the unprecedented growth of the sport leaves us staring down the eve of another electrifying football season; this time with 79 teams participating from 55 clubs in a structure which emulates that of the Senior Men’s.

Moving away from the Premier B Blue and Premier B White structure from 2018, a single Premier B competition takes its place for 2019. In it we see some familiar faces, think Caulfield Grammarians, Old Camberwell, Collegians, Monash Blues, Old Geelong and Old Xaverians, while the additional University sides in RMIT and La Trobe University join the VAFA fold for the first time. Interestingly, no team in this section has secured a VAFA Premiership flag to date…there’s history in the making here.

For the first time in the VAFA’s history, each of the Premier Women’s Football sections also has a Reserves section to compliment the Seniors; a feat which truly captures our community’s love of the game.

ROUND 1 TIPS

William Buck Premier After two consecutive Grand Final appearances in Premier B in 2017 & 2018, both St Mary’s Salesian and West Brunswick have well and truly earnt their place in the William Buck Premier section for 2019. Joined by reigning premiers Melbourne University WFC, as well as Marcellin, Old Trinity, Fitzroy, SKOB Saints and Kew, this section has all the makings for an epic battle for Premiership silverware.

With hot-favourites Brunswick Renegades, Canterbury, Mazenod, 2019 VAFA Lightening Premiership winners Old Melburnians, South Melbourne Districts, St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers and Yarra Old Grammarians in the mix, and bolstered by these club’s Reserve teams, the Premier C competition will be one to watch in 2019.

With Power House, Old Carey, Whitefriars, MCC Football Club, Aquinas, Old Ivanhoe and Therry Penola blocking their path to consecutive grand final victories, the Warriors will need to muster all their fight if they hope to double-down.

Division 4 The first ever Division 4 section is set to grace the VAFA’s Wilson Women’s competition in 2019, and in it we see five clubs field their first ever women’s teams. Will the experienced heads at Ajax and De La Salle come to the fore here, or do our newcomers in Richmond Central, St Bernard’s, Albert Park, Parkdale Vultures and Glen Eira show their staunch?

Division 3 Eight sides will take part in the Division 3 competition in 2019, and who exactly holds any ascendancy at this early stage of the season is nigh-on impossible to say. While Prahran Assumption, Emmaus St Leo’s and Preston Bullants will be intimately familiar after their Division 3 face-offs in 2018, new rivalries are sure to be forged when adding Swinburne University, Oakleigh, Bulleen Templestowe, Hampton Rovers and UHS-VU to the mix.
