VAFA Senior Big V Women’s v AFL Goldfields 2.20pm, Saturday 8 June 2019 Elsternwick Park

REPORT VAFA President’s Report Welcome to everyone as the Big V comes to town for today’s two epic representative team games with the VAFA v AFL Vic Country U19’s match to be followed by the VAFA v AFL Goldfields women’s match taking place at Elsternwick Park. The opportunity to represent our Association has been an integral part of the VAFA since the Big V was first worn nearly 100 years ago. Our U19 men’s competition is the largest such age group Australian Football competition in the country with nearly 2500 registered players spread across Melbourne. For the AFL Vic Country team, we recognise the sacrifices the players have made to attend training with often hours of travel involved. Bar from the VAFA U19’s win in Ballarat in 2018, the AFL Vic Country team has had the ascendancy in recent encounters. The last time the two teams met a classic match was played, and I am sure if both teams play with the same tenacity and skill level, that another great game will take place. Good luck to both squads for today. The meeting between the VAFA Women’s

2019 Representative Football

and AFL Goldfields teams also promises to be an absorbing contest. The VAFA was victorious when the two teams previously met in a game which was played with terrific spirit, skill and application. The VAFA Women’s competition has gone from strength to strength in the three years since its inception, whilst the Goldfields League has also shown strong growth. This will be a tough match as players from both teams wear their representative jumpers with pride. It is a great honour for all players to be part of the initial training squads and then making the final teams. I am sure hearts will be pumping as the games begin. On behalf of the VAFA I wish all players in both games well, and above all to represent your League/Association with pride and enjoy this unique experience. Thanks to the coaches, assistants, selectors, volunteers and administrators from the VAFA, Goldfields and Vic Country for putting this all together and providing our young men and women the opportunity for this day. George Voyage VAFA President

REPORT AFL Victoria Country Report The Energy Safe Challenge Cup returns today and promises to deliver another exciting game of football between these two great rivals. The VAFA Big V side proved too strong in Ballarat last year and no doubt the AFL Victoria Country boys will be very keen to atone under new coach Robbie Waters. Rob has an extensive coaching record and is sure to deliver a very competitive side today. The AFL Vic Country U19 side has been coached by Damien Sexton for the last 10 years and all at AFL Victoria sincerely thank Damien for the time, knowledge and effort he has provided throughout his tenure. A total of 44 Senior Leagues make up the leagues affiliated with AFL Victoria Country and a huge congratulations must be extended to all the boys selected to make up the final 22 which represents AFL Victoria Country today. The players have represented themselves with distinction at local level and as part of the recent Community Championships round. Players have travelled from all parts of the state to train at Harry Trott Oval in Albert Park over the last three Sundays and their commitment to be a part of this team cannot be underestimated. Thanks must go to Collegians Football Club who have

provided their facilities for training for a number of years. The Energy Safe Challenge Cup provides a great opportunity not only for players, but also for umpires, coaches, administrators and medical staff to get involved in an elite experience over the course of the U19 Representative program. We are proud to be able to showcase the best of community football at the U19 level, and to provide players with the opportunity to showcase their skills to the supporters of AFL Victoria Country and the VAFA. The game also provides an opportunity for these young players to put their best foot forward in front of recruiters from AFL clubs. We also look forward to hosting the Senior Men’s match between AFL Vic Country and the VAFA at IKON park on July 13 2019. Lastly, I would like to thank all the leagues, clubs, staff, players and coaches for making this event possible. We hope that you enjoy this year’s Energy Safe Challenge Cup and may the best team win. Stephen O’Donohue Community Football & Development Manager – AFL Victoria

REPORT AFL Goldfields Report On behalf of AFL Goldfields, I would like to thank the VAFA for hosting today’s representative match between our two competitions. The VAFA has been a great supporter of women’s representative football, to which we are thankful to have the opportunity to showcase the talent across both our respective leagues/associations. The coaching staff have been very impressed with how quickly the girls have bonded together over the past three weeks. Players have been enthusiastic on the training track and they are all excited about having the opportunity to represent AFL Goldfields, in the just the second representative game for the league.

today. Once again, thank you to our league sponsors, McDonald’s Ballarat, Red Onion Creative, Haymes Paint, and the Western Bulldogs along with our league Boards from the RDFNL, MCDFNL and BFNL for showing your support. To our coaching staff and team officials, I thank you for your time and effort in 2019. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our coaches; Shaun Stevens, Peter Forbes, Michael Colville and Emma Kent. As I am sure the players will attest to, your experience and guidance has been valuable for the program.

Our coaching staff and players are aware of the challenge that is set before the us; taking on a strong VAFA team. Our coaching staff firmly believe they have selected a competitive side that will represent the league well.

Finally, on behalf of AFL Goldfields, good luck to all of the women who are playing today. It is a fantastic effort to be selected to represent your football competition and an honour that many past players who have gone on to bigger and better careers in the AFLW have also experienced. Wear your jumper with pride and most of all, have fun out there today.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all players, support staff and supporters of the Women’s Interleague for participating

REPORT Last time they met: VAFA Big V vs AFL Goldfields VAFA defeated AFL Goldfields 8.9.57 to 1.2.8 at Mars Stadium on July 9, 2017 VAFA Women’s kick-started their Big V journey in emphatic fashion, defeating AFL Goldfields by 49 points at Mars Stadium in North Ballarat in 2017.

continually palmed the ball into the hands of her midfielders, before following up and gathering a bevy of disposals throughout the match.

Led by a best-on-ground performance from Irena Malliaras (Caulfield Grammarians) and a three-goal haul from Sarah Cameron (SKOB Saints), the Big V won the game in the second half as they piled on six goals to one.

The Big V broke the shackles of the Goldfields in the third with three goals to one before mirroring their own production in the fourth while keeping their opponents scoreless in the final term.

It was a tough first quarter as both outfits asserted their dominance but remained goalless until Cameron converted a set shot after the siren to give the Big V a seven-point lead at the first break. Mietta McDonald (Old Haileybury) picked up where Cameron left off as she gathered and snapped a leftfoot stunner four minutes into the second term, the first of two goals for the Hearts goal sneak, and extended the lead to 13 points which remained until the main break due to the elite defensive prowess of Riley Christgoergl (Old Xaverians) and the Big V back six holding the Goldfields scoreless.

Captain Claire Messent (Old Trinity), Sasha Long (Beaumaris) and Grace Buchan (Caulfield Grammarians) gathered disposals at will, while Kate Macqueen (Ormond) gave a supreme performance at centre half forward.

COACH & CAPTAIN Coaches Back to Back: VAFA Coach Tom Stafford

AFL Goldfields Coach

Tom is well-known for his success at VAFA women’s level since its inception three years ago, having coached Marcellin to the inaugural William Buck Premier flag in 2017 and into a successive grand final last year. He was named the first-ever VAFA Women’s Coach of the Year in 2017, and he is currently Head Coach of Whitefriars College First XVIII. Tom shares a strong connection with the VAFA as a player having taken to the field for Marcellin over a 10-year span. Highlights of his playing career include his 2005 B&F award in the U19 Premier Section to accompany Marcellin’s premiership, and an additional premiership in the senior’s in Premier B in 2008.

Coaching the Redan FNC Senior Women’s team to a premiership in 2018, Peter Forbes has instilled a culture of work ethic combined with the enjoyment and team ethos that makes our game great even on those cold, wet nights in the middle of July. Peter’s enthusiasm to coach and develop new and existing players is the reason he has been involved with the 2018/2019 AFL Goldfields Women’s Academy program and selected to head this year’s Women’s Interleague Program.

Abbey started her career in 2012 with Bacchus Marsh youth girls, although having never played before, Abbey showed an eagerness to learn the game. Abbey was selected in the U18 V Line Cup team where she was named Vice captain, along with numerous interleague opportunities across her U18 and open age career.

A Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC) graduate, Vanessa took up the game in the inaugural season of VAFA Wilson Women’s football in 2017 donning the green and gold for Old Trinity Grammarians. Playing in the highest level of competition in the VAFA since day dot, in the William Buck Premier Women’s section, Vanessa has a genuine love for running around the footy field with friends and teammates and has developed into a strong-bodied and determined midfielder with tonnes of speed and fantastic defensive pressure. Averaging 20+ disposals each round in 2019 to date, and spearheading the majority of the T’s clearances, Vanessa is in fantastic form and looks forwards to wearing the Big V for the first time today. 2019 Representative Football

In 2017, Abbey was fortunate enough to trial and be selected in the 1st ever Geelong Cats VFLW team where she gained valuable experience at the top level. Abbey has missed very few games in her time playing football, despite a broken nose in 2017, and this Saturday Abbey will Captain the AFL Goldfields Women’s Interleague in her 100th game of football, 94 of those with her home club Bacchus Marsh. 17
