LEST WE FORGET This Anzac Day long weekend is a time to remember those who tragically passed away in war defending the rights of Australians. Last year we focussed on the two VAFA recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest individual honour bestowed on a soldier. The heroic stories of Captain Robert (Bob) Cuthbert Grieve (Collegians) and Flight Lieutenant William (Bill) Ellis Newton (Old Melburnians) are published in more detail on our website www.vafa.com.au. Two VAFA matches will be played on Anzac Day, Monday. St Bedes Mentone Tigers host Old Scotch in an Anzac Day traditional clash. This match is able to be reintroduced this season as both are reunited in the same section. On the other side of town Fitzroy will host AJAX at the Brunswick St Oval. Two opportunities for independent VAFA supporters to spend a relaxing holiday afternoon watching some great football without the stresses of their team playing. Whilst not actually participating on Anzac Day, many clubs will still be conducting service to honour the Anzacs, predominantly during the interval between the reserves and the seniors. As we remember these heroic deeds of great Australian soldiers it is with great sadness the football community in Melbourne was devastated to lose a young Australian in a cowardly act last weekend. On behalf of the VAFA community I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Cronin family on the tragic passing of their son Patrick. Patrick played his junior football with Research FC and then progressed to their senior affiliate Lower Plenty FC in the Northern Football League. Whilst his team were defeated by West Preston- Lakeside he was celebrating playing his first senior football match with his brother
@vafaceo Lucas. A large brawl broke out at a hotel in Diamond Creek and Patrick was punched from behind when coming to the aid of a friend caught in the crossfire. Patrick never regained consciousness and his life support system was turned off on Monday. All of Patrick’s organ’s, except for his heart, have been donated. The VAFA community suffered from an event when James Macready-Bryan was celebrating his 20th birthday with his Old Carey teammates. An act of senseless violence left James permanently disabled. The James Macready-Bryan Foundation was set up in February 2007 with these main aims: • To provide financial support for care and rehabilitation, not only for James, but also for other young sufferers of an acquired brain injury. • To give a public voice to those young people, who all too often literally cannot speak for themselves. • To improve the shortfalls in the medical, financial, political and social service systems, in which young lives are saved but not adequately supported. The VAFA endeavours to promote a safe and family friendly environment to play, and watch football. All of our clubs are supportive of the non-consumption of alcohol at our games, our strict zero tolerance of poor behaviour directed at umpires and our send-off audible obscenity rule. These are all enforceable whilst under the strict supervision of our officials and clubs. Unfortunately, it is generally when the players are out in large numbers, without the control of our clubs that problems arise. The VAFA and our clubs must continue to drive the messages to our players and supporters that one punch can kill. Cover: dual Woodrow Medalist Adam Bentick in action on Grand Final Day

NOW THAT WAS VAFA FOOTY. Old Melburnians exacted what little grand final revenge one can in a home and away rematch against St Kevin’s; De La Salle scraped over the line by the smallest of margins in a night time classic against Old Xaverians; St Bernard’s lost their second consecutive match in 2016 at the hands of Collegians; while University Blues and Old Trinity were clinical in their Round 2 victories against Old Carey and University Blacks, respectively. I’m sure the elation of a Round 2 victory pales in comparison to the disappointment of grand final loss, but Old Melburnians must have felt an air of satisfaction following their 45-point win against St Kevin’s at Sportscover Arena. George Hurley-Wellington kicked four goals to go alongside his best-on-ground performance, while Al Armstrong continues to cause havoc in the OMs forward 50, with his three goals placing him second on the overall leader board with six. OMs are exciting in more ways than one as they respond to the rigours of William Buck Premier football with an ease encompassed by very few. SKOB are placed precariously two rounds into the season, sitting eighth after allowing the second-highest amount of points against. Stephen Gilham, Jordan Gysberts and Anthony Lynch missing from their starting line-up hurts and if they’re unable to return to the fold sooner rather than later, SKOB will miss their chance to accomplish the same feats as St Bedes/Mentone Tigers in 2007/08. Night time football often elicits champagne results and this year’s first senior match under lights was no exception. Paul Satterly’s De La Salle outfit is firing on all cylinders at present, taking us back to their last 10 home and away matches of 2015 with run, carry and a whole lot more run. Despite losing Matt Fieldsend and Matthew Moore to injury in the first quarter, De La managed to abolish a four-goal quarter time deficit (thanks largely to the Williams brothers) and hold on in the clutches by the smallest of margins. Xavs were not without their own 2
@NickArmistead injury concerns as Michael Darvell limped off early in the match with a strained hamstring. Tyson Thomas had the opportunity to put the Xavs in front with just minutes remaining but after completing a stunning grab in slightly wet conditions he failed to convert and pushed it out on the full. As disappointing the result was for Xavs, they can expect to find themselves pitted against the De La train in September. Collegians are showcasing similar traits to OMs at the moment; relative unknown heading into the season but surprising brilliant. Lindsay Apted, Tom Penberthy and Will Tardif starred in their 34-point win against St Bernard’s, while Courtney Hylton and Andrew Scott refuse to slow down. 1-1 after two rounds and with a combined list of youthful exuberance and premiership experience, the Lions may surprise a few more teams in the near future; starting with a mouthwatering clash against De La this weekend. It’s hard to analyse the Snow Dogs’ slow start to the season due to the number of premiership players representing again in 2016. U23 Big V Simon Caven played his first match for Coburg on the weekend, while Jock Nelson medallist, Mitch Hannan, and a host of other players continue to ply their trade elsewhere. However, their loss to Collegians takes them to 0-2 and ninth on the ladder. It’s not where Mark Riley would have wanted them but with a few tweaks of the game plan and a healthy list, expect them to bounce back in the coming weeks. Once a champion, always a threat. University Blues were an improved unit this week from the side who narrowly held off OMs as they sent through four unanswered first-term goals on their way to a 39-point win against Old Carey. Whether 39 points against the Panthers or eight against OMs, the Blues are getting it done. Kieran Harper will miss for most, if not all, of the season and losing joint Woodrow medallist, Ross Young, to the country will get some getting used to. However, with Hugh Vicker-Willis (best afield), TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Old Carey v Old Melburnians University Blues v University Blacks St Bernard’s v Old Trinity St Kevin’s v Old Xaverians De La Salle v Collegians

Tom Quinn (three goals), Marshall Rippon (game changer) and Jeremy Mugavin (does it all) at the forefront, the Blues will continue to get the points. The Panthers were valiant in defeat and kicked just two less goals than the Blues in the last three quarters after a scoreless opening term. Julian Rowe was dominant in his 100th match for the Club, while Sam Cust is exploding as an elite midfielder of the competition. Best on last week and two goals in a stunning display this week, Cust is the young Panther to put on the watch list. Sitting atop the William Buck Premier ladder, Old Trinity are perched slightly above De La Salle as the form side of the competition. Over the weekend, they backed up their first round win with a hard-fought 26-point victory against University Blacks. Andrew Kyriacopolous has arguably polled six votes with his Andrew Gaffesque run and carry, Jack Hunt displayed a second consecutive standout performance with two goals, while Ed Weatherson added four majors of his own. On the flip side, the Blacks
WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
This weekend bodes as another William Buck Premier special headlined by the grand final rematch between the T’s and Snow Dogs. Xavs and St Kevin’s will reignite rivalries when they clash at TH King; Collegians are up against the red-hot De La train; the Panthers and OMs will go head-to-head at Carey Sports Complex; and not to mention, there a Uni derby. Is it rivalry round?

A five-goal to two third term brought them within four points, but the T’s proved too strong in the end and booted four consecutive goals in the final quarter. The Blacks are looking ominous under Cam Roberts this season and with Bede Mahon, Adam Pitt and Brendan Dess running riot, they are not without a chance.

AS EXPECTED The Premier B ladder has been taken over by the newcomers, with Old Scotch, Beaumaris and Old Haileybury occupying the top three positions on the ladder after Round 2. St Bede’s/Mentone makes up the four despite being rolled by Old Brighton, while Ajax had an impressive second half, allowing them to run away from the Rovers at home. The Vultures held a two point lead over the Sharks in a relatively low scoring first half but the game opened up in the third quarter, with both teams basically doubling their half time score. The Vultures got on the board first seven minutes in, while Tom Simpkin quickly replied for Beaumaris after being set up by Will Edmonds. It was goal-for-goal as Kurt Lopo marked uncontested and converted successfully for the Vultures, then Shark Josh Ward finished off some good gut running through the middle of the ground. Jason Bristow goaled off the pack then Matt Lovejoy pounced on a loose ball and finished for Beaumaris. Jesse Waters kicked truly for the Vultures after being the recipient of a holding free kick, then Beaumaris finally managed to string together two goals in a row through Stephen Milne and Simpkin, who completed a clever soccer goal in the goal square after a marking contest. Parkdale scored the last two goals of the quarter; Lopo finished off some great work from teammate Josh Manning, who laid the perfect tackle and was rewarded, while Nathan Peterson fired in a long set shot through the uprights to give Parkdale a seven point lead heading into the last quarter. However, it was all Beaumaris in the final stanza, finishing with eight goals to two including three to Stephen Milne and two to Drew Kelly. St Bede’s/Mentone started their season off in fine form, with an 85 point win over Fitzroy, while Old Brighton were overrun by the Bloods. The Tigers started better, opening up a 20-point lead at the first break. However, the Tonners broke the game open with a seven-goal-to-one second term and never looked back. Nick Coroneos set the tone with a clever tap to Tom Fisher in the goal square. The game was hard and tough early on, with lots of stoppages. A chain of Tiger handballs ended up with Brett Denton who kicked long to Mitch Coen for the Tigers first and only goal for the quarter. Michael Karayannis was lively all day, 4
kicking four goals. He made the Tigers pay for their mistakes, kicking the last one of the quarter after the Tigers defender failed to rush it through and he picked it up and snapped truly over his shoulder. Brock Rawlinson had a big quarter with three goals for the Tonners. Carrying the momentum into the second half, the Tonners led the whole way through, finishing with a ten-goal second half to run out with a four-goal win. Ajax hosted the Hampton Rovers, with both teams looking to get on the winners list after going down in Round 1. The Jackas opened up a nice lead after a five goal first term, but the Rovers did the same in the second, bringing the margin back to seven points in favour of the home side at the main break. Four Ajax goals to none in the third set up the game, and the Rovers needed to produce something special. They started the final term well, kicking the first two goals inside the first three minutes through Sam Bradford and Nathan Smith. Ajax squandered a couple of chances before Alex Wollan gathered a loose ball and snapped their first. Nick Lewis kicked to Geoff Measey on the lead. His set shot fell short but Richie Simon pounced in the goal square and put it through. Dean Rotenberg and Warren Steinberg both converted from set shots, then Jarryd Ludski got the ball to David Fayman who turned side-on, Stevie-J style, and slotted it through. Measey and Fayman both scored majors before Smith got himself a free kick from a throw-in and converted a late consolation goal for the Rovers. Monash Blues would be cursing their luck, having to face the two Premier-relegated sides in the first two weeks. Just like the previous week against Beaumaris, the Blues started well, matching the Cardinals in a tight opening term. Old Scotch opened up the game, kicking four goals to two in each of the middle quarters, giving themselves a 35 point lead at the final break. Jonathan Daggian opened the scoring for the Cardinals, then Tom Havers finished up on the end of a chain of errors by both sides. His kick just cleared the pack on the goal line TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Beaumaris v Old Haileybury Old Brighton v Hampton Parkdale v Monash Old Scotch v St Bede’s/Mentone Ajax v Fitzroy

for the Cardinals second. Daggian kicked two more for the Cardinals before the Blues replied with two of their own through Andre Headberry and Nick Petering, both from strong contested marks inside 50. Callum Goldby kicked truly for the Cardinals after a handball over the top from Daggian and Headberry kicked his fourth for the Blues after another strong contested mark. Fitzroy was looking to bounce back after being trounced by the Tigers in Round 1 and came up against Old Haileybury, who started their Premier B campaign by rolling over the top of Old Brighton. It was a rather dull and unpleasant day, but the atmosphere at Brunswick Street always lifts the spirits. The game was tight early on, with the Roys going into half time with a five point buffer in a low-scoring contest. Five goals to three in the third term extended the Roys lead and the passionate Redders fans were expectant. The quarter began with two behinds each, before Peter Shakallis marked from a Fitzroy backline error and kicked truly.

Round 3 will take place over two days: On Saturday, Old Haileybury will have their good form tested when they travel to take on Beaumaris; the Rovers are looking for their first win and will host Old Brighton; Monash Blues travel to the Vultures Nest to face Parkdale. On Monday (Anzac Day), the Tigers host top-ofthe-ladder Old Scotch and Ajax meets Fitzroy at Brunswick Street.

Six minutes of scoreless footy later, a long kick inside 50 by Joseph Fisscher found Corey Connelly who converted the Bloods second for the quarter. A few minutes later Ed Limon found himself in front of goal and kicked another one for the Bloods, putting them in front. Connelly kicked two more for the visitors who ran out with a 14-point win. Contrary to what the official scoreline says, the Roys were not scoreless in the final term, but they were goalless, managing just two behinds. Daniel Bisetto and Tom Cheshire kicked five goals between them and were among the best for Fitzroy.

THRILLING! It was undoubtable the match of the round, and no better place to start the Premier C report than with the Kew vs Old Ivanhoe battle! It was going to be a telling game, setting up either side for their year ahead and it’s fair to say, both sides can come out of the game with positives. Kew showed that they are capable of competing against the Sections best and will be a force in 2016. For Old Ivanhoe, they showed they’ve got the courage and to never write them off after the come from behind victory without Groth and Ferguson. It was a see-saw battle which saw Old Ivanhoe Grammarians captain, Michael Mitris, cap off his standout four quarter performance by kicking the winning goal after the siren and sealing an incredible one-point win at Chelsworth Park. Trailing by 11 points with three minutes left on the clock, the Hoes kicked successive majors in the dying minutes, with the skipper’s coming on the back of a Nick Reiwoldt-inspired contested mark 20m out. The match between the two Premier C heavyweights stood up to all expectations, with both sides dominating play at different times throughout the day. The Bears were outstanding in their last quarter comeback, turning a 21-point deficit into an 11-point lead via dominant displays by Kyle Margaritis and Zac Jones. Jack Delbridge often found himself at the coalface and Maibaum snagged three majors for the Bears, while Paul Colbert kicked three of his own for the Hoes. Caulfield Grammarians flexed their muscles in what looked like a close encounter at three quarter time against Ormond, until Caulfield piled on six goals in the last quarter to finish the game 50 points clear. It was the first victory for Caulfield and they will try to continue their form into this week’s game against Marcellin. Brett Sinclair was superb all day finishing with three goals for the Fields whilst Charlie Logan managed to kick four majors. Daniel Haysom tried to will the Monders over the line but it wasn’t enough even with 6
the help of Jeremy Simon and James Landman who kicked two goals respectively. Ormond now find themselves last on the ladder and face the difficult task of unbeaten Old Ivanhoe this weekend. An electric first quarter to Mazenod saw them four goals clear of Old Camberwell Grammarians at quarter time. Not to give in, the Wellers were equally impressive in the second quarter kicking 4.7 and held the Nodders to only one point. But it was the resurgent that saw the Nodders pile on 12 goals in the second half to run away with a 43 point victory. Kieren McKeogh was a part of the Mazenod Under 19 program since 2014 where he played a dominant role up forward. What looks to be like his first senior year of football, Kieren found his feet finishing the day with four majors. His partner in crime and another young gun of the Nodders was Thomas Cincotta who also bagged four goals to go with his best on ground performance. Thomas Kanz kicked three for the Wellers but it was enough as they finished with 10.12 for the day. The Wellers are yet to register a win but face off with Oakleigh this weekend in what is expected to be an enthralling battle. Peninsula OB’s sent a message to the competition with their win against Premier C stalwart’s, Marcellin. The Pirates led all day averaging more than 4 goals per quarter. Led by their Skipper Stu Grigg who was best afield on the day, working tirelessly with fellow midfielders making it easier for Stefan Barbour who finished the day with five goals. The Pirates had 11 goal kickers on the day and have earnt themselves top spot on TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Mazenod v Kew Ormond v Old Ivanhoe Gr Old Camberwell Gr v Oakleigh AFC Marcellin OC v Caulfield Gr Peninsula OB v Williamstown CYMS

the ladder after round 2. Jeremiah Antypas, a previous Rising Star nominee was a shining light for the Eagles, finishing with four goals. Some inaccurate kicking in the first quarter saw Oakleigh 0.5 and Williamstown CYMS 1.7. Both teams had their chances to get to an early lead but it was left until the second quarter when Oakleigh found their first goal and three more to be five points clear at half time. Unfortunately for the Krushers, the lead quickly changed in a dominant quarter to the Cy’s as they kicked six goals to the Krushers one. Daniel Calman-Orr was impressive for the Cy’s kicking one major and was best on ground for the day. Aaron Cloke did what Cloke does best, kicking three and was helped by

I predict Kew will be out for redemption and will win away from home this weekend. Old Ivanhoe will continue their winning form against winless Ormond. Old Camberwell Grammarians will only just be victors against the Krushers. The match of the round will be Marcellin v Caulfield, where I think Marcellin will register their first win for the season. If they don’t it will make it very difficult to resurge for finals from there. Peninsula will hold top spot and defeat Williamstown CYMS. I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!

25 YEAR CELEBRATIONS FOR TOM! Congratulations to Tom Brain who has voluntarily hosted 88.3 Southern FM VAFA Sundays for 25 years! It is a huge achievement and deserves to be recognized within the VAFA community. The Sunday show gives the VAFA community a recap of Saturdays games and discuss the hot topics within the VAFA. The 25th year anniversary show was held last weekend and had Special Guest Brian Goodman, General Manager of Football and Umpiring on the panel.
DANE ROY’S PUNT TO THE BIG TIME! Richmond Centrals’ Dane Roy has been accepted into the University of Houston after launching a 73m barrel at a torpedo competition at the AFL grand final last year. The 27-year-old was awarded a scholarship to Prokick Australia, an academy established to help aspiring punters make it to the bright lights of the NFL. Roy’s talent was quickly identified at the academy, with the Houston Cougars signing up the 200cm, 105kg Tigers ruckman for this season’s American Athletic Conference. Dane accepted the scholarship values at $250,000.
MATES PROGRAM – Two of the VAFA’s most talented young umpires, Joshua Ball and Logan Webster, have been paired with ex-St Kilda player and current umpire, Leigh Fisher, in a bid to fast track their development in the field through the 2016 Mates Program. Created in conjunction with AFL Victoria and AFL Umpires, the Mates Program pairs talented field umpires from the seven senior metropolitan umpiring groups including the Eastern FL, Essendon DFL, Northern FL, Riddell DFL, Southern FNL, VAFA and Western Region FL with AFL listed umpires.
THRILLING ENCOUNTERS! In an exciting weekend of football, it was great to see the competitive balance is still so strong within the VAFA. We saw a kick after the siren be the decider in the Kew vs Old Ivanhoe Grammarians battle, De La Salle vs Old Xaverians decided by a single point, Albert Park vs Hawthorn decided by less than a goal, amongst many other tight tussles.

DREAM COME TRUE! Many boys dream about kicking the match winning goal after the siren for their beloved club. Well, for Old Ivanhoe Grammarian’s Captain, this dream came true. Michael Mitris capped off a standout four quarter performance by kicking the winning goal after the siren and sealing an incredible onepoint win against Kew at Chelsworth Park. Trailing by 11 points with three minutes left on the clock, the Hoes kicked successive majors in the dying minutes, with the skipper clunking a huge pack mark at the top of the goal square. As the siren sounded, Kew opponents did all they could as they watched Mitris waltz in for the sealer!

The past couple of years he has settled into Centre Half Back and made the spot his own. Never afraid to wander down into the forward line in quest of a goal his kicking is a feature of his game. Congratulations to Ivanhoe’s Lachie Roberts - Lachie has been a key member of the Hoes’ seniors in their rise up the grades since 2012, alternating across halfback and half-forward and also as a pivot on the wing. Well done Nashy!

GOOD VIBRATIONS According to WildFlorida.Tv, “unlike lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars that produce a roar with the vibration of flexible cartilage at the base of their tongue, panthers are usually quiet creatures. When panthers do make sounds they will usually chirp, whistle, purr, scream, growl or hiss”, well this scribe can confirm that the vibrations of the Panthers that originate from Keysborough are at an all time high, and what good vibrations they are. It’s all about the Old Mentonians after two rounds. The panthers are sitting pretty on top of the table having a percentage of 328.21, with Therry Penola the only other team to register two wins. Round 2 produced another enthralling weekend of football in Division 1 filled with closely fought contests, thrashings and upsets. Old Geelong welcomed Como Park to season 2016 with a strong victory over St Mary’s Salesian. The first quarter saw the Saints get off to a strong start, using the slight wind advantage to take a 17-point lead into quarter time. From there on in it was all about the Oggers as they went on to comfortably win the remaining three quarters, led by ruckman Josh Hoevenaars and their strong core of midfielders. Jock Grimshaw and Callum Wood each slotted three for the Oggers, while Will Sloss had it on a string. For the Saints, Tiwi Islands based star, Gary Puruntatameri was prominent in front of the big sticks banging home three majors, as did Sidney Jones who was their best for the day. Pegs confirmed how hungry they are to fight back following their 2015 relegation with a convincing 43 point victory over Old Paradians. The Raiders faithful were understandably excited pre game as the long awaited debut of former Parade College student Adam Pattison was upon us. Despite Pattison’s best efforts first up (2 goals); the boys from the runway were too strong. Jarryd Rogers and Mark Wilson each snared three majors and Robert Baddeley was dominant for Pegs. For the Raiders, Robbie Amerena and Marcus Nolan can keep their heads held high after strong displays, while Michael Bellizia was their only other multiple goal scorer with two. 16
Brunswick NOBSPC regained some respect over the weekend with a strong performance, however it wasn’t enough to overcome PrahranAssumption who ran over the top to end up 17-point victors. Goals were at a premium out at St Pats College in Ballarat as windy conditions contributed to an error riddled game. The home side held a nine-point lead going into the final quarter, so someone needed to stand up for the Two Blues. Enter key forward Paddy Harris who virtually won the game off his own boot by slotting three majors in the first six minutes of the term, despite an indifferent first three quarters Harris finished with a bag of five next to his name. Jamie Robbins was the other standout forward for the day with three maximums, small defender John Simonetta ran rampant in the backline and debutant John Stocker was courageous in his first outing for the Two Blues. For the boys from Brunswick, Kyle Docherty provided a strong target across half forward and Chris Ford was good down back. Therry Penola took the chocolates in another even contest, as they remain unbeaten in 2016. An explosive burst early in the last quarter was enough for the Lions to see off Whitefriars and register as narrow nine point win. The Lions know how to win a game of footy and on this occasion simply got the job done. The Friars fought hard all day and even led by three points at the last interval, but were overrun in the end. Jarrod Bannister continued his love affair with Whitefriars by slotting five, while Jake Mennuni had a strong game along with (surprise, surprise) Jarrod Egglestone who had another standout game. Friars forward, Ciaran Hickey continued his stellar form in a performance that featured three goals, and Kieran Hayes put in a quality four-quarter effort. Old Mentonians have well and truly made a statement to start the season with their second consecutive triumph of greater than 100 points and their second team score in excess of 190, TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Old Geelong v St Mary’s Old Paradians v PEGS Ivanhoe v Old Mentonians Brunswick NOBSPC v Prahran-Assumption Whitefriars v Therry Penola

forcing this scribe to steal a catch phrase from Brian Taylor… Wowee! On Saturday it was Ivanhoe who were on the receiving end of the Panthers dominance. The Panthers shot out of the blocks with a seven goal opening term and certainly didn’t look back from there, kicking eight, seven and seven in the next three. Darcy Brown was the star of the show this week kicking 7 majors, in his return to the Panthers after featuring for Sandringham Zebras last season, Brown leads the league goal kicking tally with 12. Luke Hull was once again amongst the action down forward snagging five goals, while Comrey Edgeworth was everywhere. The shining lights for the Hoers were Reuben Blackmore-Moore who kicked three and Chris Kingsford who was impressive in his first game for the season.
improved round 2 performance this week against a quality opponent in PEGS, Therry Penola are likely to continue their winning ways against St Mary’s Salesian, Old Geelong look set to build on their dominant round 2 performance against Ivanhoe and Old Mentonians will keep setting the standard when they come up against Old Paradians. This week’s match of the round features Prahran-Assumption and Whitefriars. The Friars have been competitive despite remaining winless, whilst Prahran-Assumption has played out two very tight games. I’m tipping the fighting Friars to provide an upset and manufacture their first win of the season.

DIVISION 2
Jarryd McGuane
IT’S ALL HAPPENING! In an exciting Round 2 of Division 2; saw the return of last year’s finalists St Johns OC to action, a first win in the Division for a promoted side, and another impressive come from behind victory. A strong first half was not enough for Emmaus St Leos to get their first win of the season, as MHSOB took the 29 point victory at Melbourne High School. The game started with Emmaus St Leos getting out of the gate quickly to take an 11 point lead into quarter time. The Animals continued to extend their lead in the second quarter and led by 29 points at half time. But with a five to one goal quarter for the Unicorns bought the margin back to one point at the final change. With the momentum from the third quarter, MHSOB maintained their dominance in the final term to run out with the 29 point victory. Beau Jellis added to his five goals from round one with a bag of four and a best on ground performance for the Unicorns. Jack Wotherspoon was the Animals best while Paul Barranello put through three majors. St Johns OC returned to VAFA action in Round 2 in the winner’s column, defeating Yarra Valley OB by 19 points at Doncaster Reserve. The game started in a tight fashion with St Johns taking a four point lead into the first change. The JOC’s extended their lead in the second quarter out to 18 points after kicking five goals to the Bushrangers two goals. Yarra Valley battled hard and were able to reduce the margin to 13 points at three quarter time as they looked to maintain their unbeaten start to the year. But St Johns settled in the last quarter with four goals to three to take the margin out to 19 at the final siren. Aaron Thornton was dominant for the JOC’s putting through 8 goals and Keith Ash was 18
best on ground. Ryan Pollard was the best for the Bushrangers as Jordan Canham kicked four goals for the second week in a row. After a very competitive round one, West Brunswick became the first of the 2015 promoted sides to get a Division 2 victory, taking down Eltham Collegians at Eltham College by 47 points. West Brunswick got off to a flyer of a start and never allowed Eltham Collegians to settle. The Magpies started with a five goal quarter to the Turtles one as the hit the first break with a 25 point lead. The West Brunswick lead was extended to 34 points by the end of the second quarter, as the game looked as if the Magpies would blow the Turtles away. The momentum didn’t change in the third quarter but West Brunswick’s inaccuracy was the only reason that the margin didn’t reach above the 44 point third quarter time margin. The final quarter was effectively halved as both sides kicked three goals apiece, just the Magpies inaccuracy extending the final margin. Joel Beer was the best for West Brunswick, while Dylan Muscat put through four goals. Ben Gill was again Eltham Collegians leading goal kicker with three as Jonathan Iaquinto was the most influential for the Turtles. In the battle of the Bullants, Preston due to the strength of their second half were able to hand Bulleen/Templestowe a 72 point defeat at W.R. Ruthven Reserve. After a strong second half comeback against the Turtles last week, Bulleen/Templestowe could not show the same second half strength against the very strong Preston. The game looked as if it would be a tight one as Bulleen/Templestowe led by four TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Yarra Valley OB v West Brunswick Eltham Collegians v Preston Bullants Richmond Central v Emmaus St Leos

points at quarter time and Preston took a two point lead into half time. Preston was the more successful in front of goal in the high scoring third quarter, as they won the quarter six goals to four and led by 19 at the final change. Preston then held Bulleen/Templestowe to one behind in the final quarter compared to eight goals themselves turning the game into a blowout. Kent Beaumont was Preston’s leading goal kicker with four goals and Nicholas De Andrade was best on ground. Anthony Lucisano was Bulleen/Templestowe’s best player and leading goal kicker with four majors.

of Emmaus St Leos as both teams chase their first win of the year. The final match of the round sees a matchup of undefeated sides as 2-0 MHSOB host 1-0 St Johns OC at Melbourne High School. Bulleen/Templestowe have a week to regroup and lick their wounds as they have the bye in round 3
Round 3 sees fifth placed West Brunswick travel to Doncaster Reserve to take on fourth placed Yarra Valley OB, with the winner to position themselves nicely in the top half of the ladder. If the start of the season for bottom placed Eltham Collegians couldn’t be tougher, have a difficult proposition as they host top of the table Preston Bullants. ROUND 2 In a round that had the early contender for game of the season between the birds, Hawthorn and Albert Park, some teams are flying high in 2016, striking the division with ferocity like the Canterbury Cobras, some are rediscovering their form like the South Melbourne Districts, while there is a battle to get off the bottom too.
AQUINAS DEF. PARKSIDE FOOTBALL CLUB Parkside travelled to Aquinas College on Saturday, unfortunately for them as expected Aquinas was looking to take out some of the frustration of their loss last week, and that was evident as they took a commanding eight goal lead into the main break. Sam Williams booted six, and David Malvaso booted five of his own, as the duo were too dominate on the day outscoring the entire Red Devils squad. Philip Jurkovsky was best on the field for Aquinas who rebounded nicely after the defeat last week, putting up an impressive 153 points on the scoreboard, including 23 goals, to dominate, 153-57. Aquinas will look to make it two in a row as they head to face the Wickers next, while Parkside will look to prove they can play Division 3 football against Glen Eira next weekend. GLEN EIRA DEF. UHS-UV Glen Eira is making some noise in 2016. Faced with the difficult task of heading down to Brens Oval, the Saints had some work ahead of them though, after dominating the first half, the Vultures made a stirring comeback in the premiership quarter to make the contest much more interesting, reducing the deficit to 14, as the game headed into the final quarter. However it was in the fourth where Glen Eira kicked away, kicking five majors to a single UHS-VU goal, to overrun the Vultures, as escape with the victory, 99-58. Glen Eira look to make it three on the trot as they next face a reeling Parkside. While UHS-VU continue to struggle this year, unable to turn up the defensive pressure, and with a match-up against the red hot Canterbury next, it could be a tough season for the Vultures’ faithful. Canterbury Football Club def. Power House 20
Speaking of Canterbury, they are looking like they are made for Division 3 football, as they retained their spot at the top of the table as they were too much for a persistent Power House, hanging on for a 36 point victory, 107-71, at the Canterbury Sportsground. Nick Szabo was stellar up front for the Cobras kicking a massive haul of six, with Scott Fitzgerald adding four of his own. Power House started off on the wrong foot, falling behind by 20 after the first quarter, an amount they couldn’t peg back, even with the outstanding effort by Luke Stubbs kicking six of his own but inaccurate kicking cost Power House on the scoreboard, and eventually the game.
LA TROBE UNIVERSITY DEF. ELSTERNWICK La Trobe smacked Elsternwick in the face from the opening bell, and the drubbing didn’t let up, as they dominated to lowly Wickers by the tune of 107 points, 137-30, kicking a minimum of four goals in each quarter to finish the game with 21 majors as a team. The Wickers had absolutely no answers for the onslaught, Scott Grace can hold his head high, kicking four goals, every one for his team, but that was the only highlight, in a game of lowlights for Elsternwick, as La Trobe cruised from pillar to post. Mitch Gleeson kicked five, while Matt Hay won the best on the ground, in a dominate performance. HAWTHORN DEF. ALBERT PARK In the game of the round, the ‘battle of the birds,’ saw the Hawks narrow edge the Falcons in a five point thriller at Ross Gregory Oval. Hawthorn were led by Jason Ince’s four goals, while Lachlan Chapman put in the best performance on the park, in a game full of amazing efforts. A win still eludes Albert Park in 2016, however this performance is definitely something to build on, if they can sustain this level of effort for the rest of the season, then they could be pushing for a DIVISION 3 — TIPS IN BOLD Canterbury v UHS-VU Elsternwick v Aquinas South Melbourne v La Trobe University Glen Eira v Parkside Football Club Hawthorn v Swinburne University Power House v Albert Park

spot in finals footy come September, but for now the focus shifts to Power House next week, and recording the first W.
SOUTH MELBOURNE DISTRICTS DEF. SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY It was a second quarter in which the Swans kicked eight goals to rocket them back into the match. Swinburne controlled an opening quarter piling on five quick goals to hold a 30 point lead after the first, however South Melbourne found another gear, to set up an tense second half. Steve Clarke showed moments of brilliance leading South Melbourne back into the match, and hit the scoreboard himself with two key goals, in his second straight man of the man performance. An awesome game between two tough football clubs, can’t wait for the return fixture.
DIVISION 3
Another stellar week in the third division wraps up, we are seeing a number of clubs kick away at the top of the table, including our new boys Canterbury who have strung together two impressive wins, they look to go three for three against UHS-VU this week. While an early pick for match of the round looks to be Hawthorn hosting Swinburne. Round 3, has the potential to shake up the table, and for some struggling teams to get back on the winning side of the ledger.

WEST TEAMS ON TOP Last Saturday was certainly 4 seasons in one day as we saw high winds, sun and some rain. Once it was all said and done, the 2 WEST teams sit atop undefeated whilst, the other teams this side of the Westgate, still have a lot of work to do. Manningham came away with an upset, Eley Park couldn’t handle the wind and a half-strength Chaddy kept posting live scores (Westbourne’s live scores) and maybe should have stopped. Box Hill North had a rest and this week, and this week a test. Mt. Lilydale currently sit third and seem rejuvenated. To last week’s games:
MASALA DEF BY MT. LILYDALE Mt. Lilydale headed out to WJ Turner reserve to take on Masala in their second straight home game. A fairly even first quarter by the two teams (9 nine scoring shots each). If not for Masala’s inaccurate kicking with a slight wind, they could have the given the Rams a run for the money. Come the second quarter, the Rams took control of the wind advantage and the game, going crazy with 9-8 to 2-2 quarter. It turned out to be more of the same for Masala in the third, again wasting opportunities kicking 1-7 to 6-5. By the last quarter, Mt. Lilydale again applied the pressure and ran away 133 point victors. BOG Rhett Singer (3 goals) controlled the midfield whilst, Sean Gibson and Max Hampton (5 each) and 8 other goal-scorers had a field day. For Masala, Sam Freeman (3 goals) was the only forward causing headaches and Zack Kelly was best for the Tiges. NORTH BRUNSWICK DEF BY MANNINGHAM Manningham Cobras travelled to Allard Park and the Bulls of North Brunswick. The Bulls made two changes from last week but, one was last week’s “best-on” Hugh Sheridan. The Cobra’s four changes made an influence after being given a lesson last week by Westbourne and wanted make amends. The Coabra’s were hungry in the first quarter shooting 6-1 and a 28pt 1/4 lead. This lead was maintained (give or take a few points) until the final siren as Manningham was able to stifle any of the Bulls advances. Shooting 5-13 at 22
home was a major concern for the Bulls and this loss may haunt them later in the season. For the Cobra’s Jacob Daily was best judged afield and Scott McPherson (5 goals) was their only multiple goal scorer. Peter Notaro kicked 3 for North Brunny and Luke Mahoney was the Bulls best.
CHADSTONE DEF BY WESTBOURNE Chaddy were pumped to finally get their season underway after a bye, despite having to face a tall order in the visiting Westbourne Warriors. Westbourne over-powered the under-manned in every area and in every way. The Synners were able to contain Jason Collins (4 goals) to a degree thanks to Caleb Vardy-Olsson but, there were 14 other goal-kickers to contend with and WITHOUT Ali Eqbal, who had 7 last week. Yes, the Synners played 8 first Senior gamers but, new Synner coach, Jason Cotsis wants “no excuses”. Westbourne are definitely the real-deal but, their real test lies next week, with Point Cook. Kieran Delaney was BOG, Chris Hudson and Aaron Taylor had 7 each for the visitors. Newly appointed vicecaptain, Jason Edwards battled hard all day for the Synners. Chadstone reportedly have a multitude of players coming back for their make or break this week against Masala. POINT COOK DEF ELEY PARK Our match of the round, had a young Point Cook outfit hosting an older, experienced Eley Park at Saltwater Reserve. With a blowing a gale to one end all day, only 2 goals were kicked to the nonscoring end. The Sharks had the wind in the first, and a quick 27-1 lead. The Sharks had never played at Saltwater Reserve before and the Doggies were a lot smarter with the footy, kicking into the breeze and capitalised when they had it. The Sharks 3rd quarter could have been better, unable to utilise what was a 5 goal wind which eventually TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Box Hill North v Eley Park Chadstone v Masala Mt. cost them the game. Point Cook’s young ruckmen, Alex Grigg and Cam England stood up well against Eley Park’s Ramy Rayden in a tight contest. For Eley Park, Dan Isaac (3 goals), Adrian Pillay (1) and Brent Christie, were amongst their best. Point Cook were well led by William Dawson (5 goals), Matt Herbertson (3) and BOG Paul Hegarty (1).
game, travelling to Jordan Reserve and the Chadstone Synners. These two teams split their games in 2015, both winning at home. Both training sessions will have double attendance to ensure selection for one of these teams first win. It’s tough choice but, I’ll stick with the flow and have faith that the home team will bounce back.
PREVIEW
Manningham (7th) head up the Maroondah to Quarry Rd and Mt. Lilydale (3rd). It’s too early to pick form with these two as both are 1-1 but, Mt. Lilydale pitted themselves well when I saw them in Round 1 against the Sharks. I’ll go Rams at home.
Round 3 this week, really should be considered the round of the year with evenly matched sides and rivalries every where you look. Everybody gets match of the round!! A paltry 2/4 tipping last week, we’ve got 4 tough games to pick winners. To the games: Box Hill North (6th) had a week off to prepare for their neighbours and bitter rivals in Eley Park (5th). Both teams coming off Point Cook losses, Eley Park will lick their wounds and will be expected to snatch this one at Elgar Park.
If you REALLY had to choose a match of the round, Point Cook (2nd) at Westbourne (1st), would be the winner. Having seen Westbourne last week, I’ll have to stay with them until I’m wrong. Westbourne North Brunswick (4th) have the bye and have 2 weeks to prepare for the Sharks. Come the start of round 4, they’ll still be equal second.
Another game of interest, is Masala’s first away

GRILL’D RISING STAR 2016 COREY CONNELLY – OLD HAILEYBURY moves the footy and even his hair do on game day. Corey’s strengths as a footballer would be his ability to go forward to kick goals using his explosive speed, getting over the ball and he is an incredible desperate defensive player. The young gun is known for his excellent team work and plays the right way with a coachable Corey first came to play at Old Haileybury in 2014 where he started in under 19s and seniors
attitude.
while in Year 11 at school and kicked 3 goals on debut, by the following year he had found himself a spot in the senior side permanently. Corey played in the Haileyburians premiership in Premier C and became the first school boy to do this since Mike Porter in 1963. Corey’s style of football is most like Nathan Fyfe with how he

5 YEARS AGO – 2011 In D1 Section, Therry Penola had a huge win over Old Westbourne, 25.10 to 6.6 and maintained their position on top of the ladder. Therry jumped out of the blocks with a 7 goal to 1 first quarter and cruised home from there. Best – George (9), Faroldi, Pell, Egglestone, Harding (3), Doyle (Therry) and Miller, Barnes, Walker, Pavez, Nikola, Whiting (OW). Elsternwick ran right over Mt Lilydale kicking 27.10 to 12.16 with key forward, Adam Thornton, kicking 8 goals. The Wicks were looking to have a big season but they had started with two losses up until this round. Best – Thornton (8), Craig, D Richardson, Healey, Yemm (3), A Richardson (Elsternwick) and Cerra, Moyes, Hickey, Paul (3), Evans (3), Hollingsworth (Mt Lilydale). In Division 4, St Francis Xavier were the only undefeated team after round 3. They had little difficulty against South Mornington and won comfortably 23.15 to 9.14. Best – Spencer (8), Pabst (5), Burns, Howard, Pearson, Andrews (StF-X) and Price, Fitzsimmons, Williams, Heib, Riordan, Smith (Sth M). John Nicolopoulos had been a star at junior club, Ashburton Redbacks and in 2008 had been selected in the Vic Metro U18 squad however he injured his knee playing with Oakleigh Chargers and could not take his place in the Vic Metro team. John then transferred to De La Salle in 2010 after a season at Williamstown in the VFL. In this round John won the Club Warehouse Rising Star Award after his 5 goals against St Bedes Mentone Tigers. Ormond’s Damien (Pistons) Cleary played his junior football at St Peters before moving to Oakleigh in the VFA. He crossed to Ormond in 1995 and played in the 98 Reserves’ premiership. Along the way Damien won 2 best and fairests in Ormond’s Reserves and was awarded life membership in 2005. Off the field Damien was an outstanding contributor for Ormond in a number of areas.
10 YEARS AGO – 2006 In D1 Bulleen Templestowe won a ‘heart stopper’ against Banyule. The lead changed a number of times during the game and the wind had a considerable effect on the scoring abilities each term. Best – Barker, Chivers, Hare, Schneider, Tulloch, Tehan (BT) and Taylor, Shepherd, Gray, Smith Swift, Rothe (Banyule). The closest game in D2 Section was between Oakleigh and La Trobe Uni with the ‘Trobers’ accuracy in front of goal the difference 14.5 to 12.16 giving LaTrobe victory by a solitary point. The match had 44
constantly fluctuated keeping the crowd on their toes. Best – Waterman, Maatman, Brooks, Martin, Marx, McMullan (LaTrobe) and Bell, Holden Lamb (3), Gately, Briggs, Rutter (Oakleigh). West Brunswick too an early lead in their Division 3 match against Monash Gryphons and never relinquished it, running out 12.14 to 7.12 winners in an entertaining game. Best – Martin, Irving, Miller, Haysey (4), Dishon, Batters (West Brunswick) and Baxter, Rose, Vallance, Burgess, Keating, Wilson (Monash Gryphons). Umpires’ Corner paid tribute to Steve McCarthy on his 500th match as an umpire. His co-scribe, Leah Gallagher, asked ‘Macca’ a few questions relating to his long career including asking Macca to tell us the funniest thing he had seen on the field of play. His response “had a final many seasons before and the losing team asked for a count. A very large ruckman from one side sat on the extra player about 3 meters from the boundary to prevent him from escaping the count! The poor guy was trying to ‘claw’ his way to the line! Also asked to name the best player he mentioned a number – Michael Blood, Garry Connolly, Tim Cooke, Bernie Dineen, Rob Fuller, Andrew Leoncelli, Terry Young, Andrew Ramsden and Tony MacGeorge but he couldn’t split them. Macca also said Russell Barnes was the toughest and most courageous he had seen.
20 YEARS AGO – 1996 In D Section, it was an even and entertaining game between Southbank and Parkside with the lead changing several times in the first half before Southbank clung to a slender lead in the second half and finished ahead 10.15 to 10.9. Best – Eastham, Treyvaud, Keighran, Bunnett, Bluhm, Pitts (Southbank) and Moodie, Chilcott, Campbell, Dean, Tessari, Panjari (Parkside). In E East Section Richmond Central made a determined effort to overtake Old Carey in the last quarter but Old Carey pulled away in the last few minutes to win comfortably 14.19 to 12.16. Best – Hickey (6), Lee, Yarnall, Eccles (3), Glindermann, Campbell (Old Carey) and Shannon, Malcolm, Holt, Dunne Siwka, Warne (Richmond Centrals). In E Central Old Westbourne ‘kicked the sweep’ against the hapless Thornbury Cougars, 36.25 to 2.7. The goals were well spread apart from Scott Whiting’s 11! Best – Whiting, Blake, Franklin (4), Outen, Billman (Old Westbourne) and Alembakis, Cutler, Lincoln, Brewer, Muscat, Mitronatsios (Thornbury Cougars). Monash Whites were handed a thrashing by ANZ Bank in E South Section. The bankers kicked 9 in the final term with a final scoreline of 24.8 to 8.11. Best – Malone (8), THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
Boyle (6), Lawrence (3), Phillips, McDonald, Walkley (ANZ) and Riddle, Cormick, Utting, Collier, Van Den Zalm (3), Sprague (Monash Whites). VAFA CEO Phil Stevens placed a message of condolence following the sad passing of his former team mate, Trevor Barker, one of St Kilda’s finest ever players. In ‘Tap Outs by The Rover’ column, the comment was made – ‘Three weeks in and it’s all happening. Old Xavs and Ormond making up 9 and 10 positions in A Section when in the previous season they had been heading up the A Section ladder.
30 YEARS AGO – 1986 The VAFA Certificate of Merit winners or 1986 were – Graeme Simpson (15 years with VAFA Umpires Association including an A Grade Grand Final and VAFA Rep game), Cliff Bastow (Foundation Member of his Club, West Brunswick, played 224 games and had also been U19 and Senior Coach. David Urquhart (played 220 games over 17 years for the Old Melburnians, committeeman, Life Member and Interstate team runner 1983/84). In E Section, State Bank overwhelmed Clayton 21.19 to 11.5. Best – Coghlan, Rerdon, Curtin, Mathieson, Jenkins (6), Connelly (State Bank) and Dinsdale, Bosley, Gent, Eaton, Patsianis, Luxa (Clayton). In F Section, Whitefriars were really looking the goods with another strong win, this time over Doveton SJOC 18.22 to 5.8. Best – G Harrison (6), Dunn, Tierney, Rohan, D Crowe, F Reidy (Whitefriars) and Trimboli, Tucci, Huffer, Paynter, Athanasakis, Dunin (La Trobe). THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
Leading goalkicker for the round was David O’Shaughnessy (Old Trinity) in C Section – 11 goals.
40 YEARS AGO – 1976 De La Salle were the ‘trend setters’ in A Section and their seniors and reserves were both on top of the ladder undefeated. Reservoir Old Boys made De La work hard to gain the 4 points in the main game and it was only De La’s 5 goals to 2 in the final term that sealed the game, 17.17 to 12.14. Hill (5), Fitzpatrick, Lyons, McHenry, Power and Mulqueen were the best players for De La Salle. For Reservoir, R Shepherd, Bates, Wilson, Dowell, Scott and Massey were the losers’ best contributors. A Section coaches were Graham Warfe (Coburg), Bernie Sheehy (DLS), Bill Harding (Monash), Shane Maquire (NOBS), Alec Gardiner (Trinity), Ian Cameron (Ormond), Brian King (Reservoir), Gus Mitchell (St Bernards), Peter O’Donohue (Uni Blacks) and Alan Salter (Uni Blues). 50 YEARS AGO – 1966 North CBC Old Boys and Monash Uni were now the only two undefeated teams in C Section. North only won against Old Brighton by 3 points, 11.9 to 9.18 and the margin was exactly the same as Monash 9.15 defeated Old Haileybury 9.12. The best players in the these games were Kelsey, Drew, L Carney, Garland, D Adams and Thomas (North CBC); D Myers, J Agar, Millis, Code, Berry and Pryor (Old Brighton); Cole, Message, Windust, Hone, Evans and Dixon (Monash) and Young, Bowring, Home, Mulvey, Langford-Jones and Burke (Old Haileybury). Peter Booth celebrated his appointment as Captain of Old Paradians by playing his 150th game for the club. Peter’s brother, John, had been appointed coach of the club.
60 YEARS AGO – 1956 The Power House Club were strong enough in numbers to field two teams, the “Greens” in B Section and the “Golds” in E Section. While the Greens were going along nicely in third spot, the Golds had yet to record a win but were very stiff to go down to Brighton by a solitary point. The Golds’ scribe was magnanimous enough to thank Brighton for the game and also congratulate the umpire for his efforts. Mark Marsden (University – E Section) was the highest goal scorer to date in the competition with 37. The Junior Section was dominated by district teams, both in terms of the top four (Ivanhoe, Alphington, Hampton Scouts and Ormond) and in the make up of the section (only “old boys teams” were Old Scotch, MHSOB and Footscray Tech). 45

SCOTCH JUMP SKOBS, EMERGE AS A CONTENDER IN 2016 Old Scotch has emerged as a contender for this year’s Premiership after defeating St.Kevins by 8pts. St.Kevins took an early lead at the first break before some stoic defence and attacking offensive play got Scotch’s game going, if not for some errant kicking they would have led by more at the half, kicking 2.7 in the second term to lead by 10. The second half saw a typical St.Kevins comeback, kicking 4 goals to 1 and they went into the final change leading by 7 points, Skobs would have been hoping to hold on to the momentum and storm home victorious. Scotch managed to outdo Skobs in the final term kicking 3 goals to 0 to run away 8pt victors in what was already the game of the season. Terrific effort on both sides and Scotch has got their groove back to really put their name in lights as a contender in 2016. They are undefeated alongside their foes Old Xavs and will take on Beaumaris next week, with the hope of going 3-0 and building their season into something special. Murchie and Lindholm were their best players while Stewart kicked 3 crucial goals. St.Kevins were gallant, but just couldn’t get the job done on the day, they will be right up there at seasons end too, but this day simply belonged to a much hungrier Scotch outfit. Well played. Beaumaris took on Uni Blacks and were in control from the get go, blazing away to a 61pt lead at half time. Blacks never looked like firing a shot at the Sharks and only managed to kick 4 goals for the entire match to Beauy’s 16. Sam Gibbins was outstanding booting 4 while Hendricks chimed in to kick 3 goals in the rout. Cusack and Tedde were outstanding for the Sharks as they continue to march up the ladder. They currently sit 4th after two rounds and will face a stern test against a rejuvenated Old Scotch outfit this week. St.Bernard returned to the winners list with a comprehensive win over Uni Blues at Crawford oval, the Uni boys put it right up to the Snowdogs in the first term, with the Bernards boys holding a slender 7pt lead at the first change, before clicking into gear, booting 4 goals in the second term, and going in 20pts up at the half. Bernards continued to kick away after half time and kept Uni goalless in the final term running away with an 89Holmesglen UNDER 19 Section 2 St Bedes/Mentone v Old Brighton Caulfield Grammar v Parkdale Old Carey v Old Melburnians Fitzroy v Old Ivanhoe Whitefriars v Old Trinity

36 win, their first of the season as they look to get things back on track following a hammering from the Old Xavs in round 1. Doody and Beddoe were the headliners for the Snowdogs playing outstanding games with Sawaya kicking 2 goals on the day. Clements and Walmsley were Blues best on a pretty poor day for both University teams. There was a nice buzz around Toorak Park on Saturday with the Under 19s playing the curtain raiser for the Night time festivities in a festival of football against De La Salle throughout the day. They begun proceedings by reminding everyone of last seasons triumph, raising their premiership flag in front of adoring supporters at their traditional home of football. It was a tight opening term with the reigning champs holding a 3 point lead at Quarter time and many though, it is game on now, but no doubt some stern words from coach Callinan sparked the Premiers into action booting 7 goals to 1 in the second term and never looking back, eventually running out 102-59 winners, a pretty comprehensive win for the Kew boys. Patty Wallace had his kicking boots on, booting 6 majors and featuring in the best players while Silk, Pirrie and Amad all put together strong performances on the day. For De La, Trusler kicked 4 majors and Martinez and Pennell tried to spark the Dee’s but were unable to get them over the line. Outstanding performance by the Old Xavs who continue to motor along, while for De La, it will be back to the drawing board with a big game against St.Bernards next week, while the Old Xavs return to their home away from home at Stradbroke park to clash with St.Kevins in what should be a fiery contest. Old Xaverians by 27pts Beaumaris by 77pts
St.Bernards by 20pts St.Kevins by 45pts
U19 SEC. 2 - AND SO IT BEGINS! A rampant Old Melburnians side put an exclamation mark to their hot start to 2016 with a thumping victory over an out of sorts Old Brighton on Saturday morning. A seven goal to zero first half blitz set up the 71-point win against last seasons preliminary finalists, as Old Melburnians simply couldn’t miss. Hugo Hall was stellar in a best afield display, While Josh Kerin hit the scoreboard again with four majors to his name. The result is the second crushing defeat in as many weeks for Old Brighton. the one that played off for a grand final, the Tonners are struggling to find any cohesion over the four quarters. Next week Old Brighton will look for a more competitive effort against a 2-0 St Bedes/Mentone side, whilst Old Melburnians face off against Old Carey in what promises to be the match of the round. In a rather bizarre contest at Brindisi Street Oval on Saturday, St Bedes/Mentone handed Caulfield Grammar their first triple figure loss in some time. The match was effectively over at quarter time, a 7.7 to 0.0 scoreline flattering the reigning premiers as they were dominated all over the field. Mitchell Johnstone ran all day and was the best player out there, whilst James Mangoni and Brandon De Zilva bobbed up for three goals each in the 104-point win. Caulfield Grammar finished on 1.16 for the day, a strange score in modern football. In other results, Whitefriars notched their first win of the season, beating Old Carey by 74 points, Parkdale were far too strong for Old Ivanhoe, and Fitzroy held off a plucky Old Trinity at Hudson Oval.
U19 SEC. 3 - GOOD TO BE BACK! Mazenod continued their fine start to the new season, overpowering a strong Marcellin squad in the final quarter to run out impressive 54-point winners away from home. The most pleasing aspect of the win was that their 14 goals were scored by nine different players. Sam Deegan was prominent through the midfield while Corey Martino provided some x factor with three important goals for the Nodders. The match was an old fashioned arm wrestle for three quarters, with Marcellin kicking out to an early three goal lead on the back of some tough and direct football lead by Daniel Lunn. Mazenod slowly but surely reeled Marcellin in, eventually blowing them away with a ruthless 7 goal to 0 final quarter. Williamstown survived a brilliant last quarter charge from Ormond, who came from 37 points down at the final change to kick six of the last seven goals and fall agonisingly short at the siren. Jake Slee proved the matchwinner for Williamstown, booting six majors to claim best afield honours, whilst Zach Papacostas nearly dragged Ormond over the line with a standout performance. The 11-point victory sees Williamstown sitting pretty at 2-0, whilst the Monders languish in 7th position on the ladder with a record of 0-2. have every chance to notch their first win against Old Geelong. Elsewhere in section three Peninsula overcame a disappointing Hampton Rovers, whilst Collegians were far too good for Old Geelong at Como Park.
UNDER 19 SECTION 4 Hot early, Old Haileybury kicked off with a 38 point lead by quarter time setting up there impressive win over UHS-VU last week. The Haileyburian’s might be the side to challenge for high honours and it’s hard to disagree, with the likes of Benjamin Oakes, Brodie Steele, Jordan Hurley and Jack Munro. With a low scoring game, the action continued on as Monash Blues took on Therry Penola. Patrick Easson lit it up with two goals getting Monash Blues over the line to win. AJAX kicked off the game strong but that didn’t stop Preston Bullants travelling not far behind by half time. The second quarter brought both teams fighting hard for that glorious win, but AJAX were unstoppable with Ryan Kagan kicking five goals to get them over the mark to win. PEGS were strong from the get go and even though Aquinas put up a good fight from the very start, Jordan Erougian and Max Tonna from PEGS tore it up with a massive five goals each.
UNDER 19 SECTION 4 With a nail biting match between Old Paradians and MHSOB brought all supporters out of there seats as it was neck to neck all game. By three quarter time the game was tied and with Dean Liuzzi, James Frank and Ashley Carabott from Old Paradians tearing it up, MHSOB just got over the line with a one point win. De La Salle put on a show down at La Trobe University as they took on La Trobe who brought the heat. Oliver Gunning and Riccardo Rando showed who was boss as they took De La Salle two there second win of the season. With a thrilling match down at W.A. Scammell Reserve between Oakleigh and Parkside both teams were fierce from the start. Oakleigh struggling to score in the first half quickly turned it around by fourth quarter by snagging a few goals but Parkside who were on fire from the start took home the win. St Johns boy’s Brayden Follett and Ben Kelly tried to get amongst the action as much as they could, but Mazenod brought there A game leaving them to take out the win with Tom Riley kicking five and Thomas Patterson kicking three. UMPIRES CORNER
@VAFAUA
AGM The VAFA Umpires Association Annual General Meeting is to be held at 7:30pm after training on Thursday 28 April. All running members are expected to attend, with a free BBQ after the meeting. Rumour has it VAFA General Manager Football and Umpiring Brian Goodman may be manning the tongs. Family, friends and retired umpires welcome!
VALE HELEN EVANS Late last week we learned of the sad and sudden passing of Helen Evans, mother of Goal Umpire Clayton Evans. Umpires wore two black armbands last weekend in respect and support of the Evans and Hinton families.
Our beloved Kevin ‘Chillie’ Segota added to the yearly falls tally with a spectacular slip in the Saturday Night thriller between Old Xavarians and De La Salle. Fortunately Chillie suffered only minor bruising (mostly to his ego), and was up and in position for the next act of play.
WEBSITE/ SOCIAL MEDIA Don’t forget to regularly check www.vafaua.asn. au, www.facebook.com/vafaua and @vafaua on Twitter and Instagram to stay up to do date with the latest information. If you see anything that could feature in the Umpires Corner please email vafaua@gmail.com by 8pm Sunday
JONESY JUICING? Arriving at Old Trinity, we were quite surprised to see Paul Jones running around umpiring the reserves, looking as limber as ever. With Daniel Silfo declaring ‘severe leg soreness’ on Thursday after being appointed to the large, lush ground (and being unable to find a way out of the match), Jonsey was asked what his secret was to staying so agile. ‘Here, try some of this cream, its 20 times as strong as Deep Heat’. Silf applied a liberal dose, and off he went. Quarter time saw the offending leg change to a colour more usually associated with the Sherrin, while half time was spent frantically looking for a way to get the cream off. Post match, despite chemist’s advice to the contrary, Silf jumped straight into the steaming hot shower to remove the cream. Babies are born with less noise and fewer expletives, and he is now seeking advice about treatment for 3rd degree burns (albeit not from Jonesy). On the plus side, we now know what keeps Jonesy moving at training!
PLEASE REPLACE YOUR DIVOTS It’s always fun to watch umpires fall over – Brendan Hoornweg and Sam Levin with prizeworthy efforts so far. But it’s extra special when a Goal Umpire provides us with comedy gold. 54

AUTUMN BLUES Comparative team strengths appear to have been revealed even after two Rounds. Much scoreboard inaccuracy permeated Round 2 and repercussions of this could prove vital as the season progresses and as percentage is a determinant in the final Sectional placement.
REVIEW OF ROUND 2 SECTION 1 Melbourne High School Old Boys led throughout to defeat the markedly inaccurate South Mornington by seventy five points. The visitors, who only managed one second half goal at Forest Hill will appreciate their home match today. Brunswick/ North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s, who started well against Richmond Central, were unable to maintain the required standard and slipped further behind the “Cardinals” as the match proceeded. Inaccuracy restricted the Richmond Central margin to eighteen points. Ruckman, Peter Iser was best for the victors. St Francis Xavier again found the opposition far too strong. Hawthorn held the 2015 Section 2 premiers goalless until the third quarter as they built a nine goal lead. The last quarter saw a complete reversal of form as the “Beaconsfield Boys” restricted Hawthorn to two points while they added five goals to give respectability to their final score which left them twenty one points in arrears as the final siren sounded. In the afternoon match, Old Xaverians led throughout against Prahran/ Assumption who provided strong opposition throughout the first half. Superior fitness enabled the Xaverians to finish far too strongly for the “Two Blues” who lost by fifty points.
SECTION 2 Monash Blues certainly did find “the Blues” against West Brunswick who led through and won by seventy seven points; a margin which was restricted only by the inaccurate kicking of the 58
West Brunswick players. Swinburne University did bounce back from their Round 1 loss when they led throughout to defeat University High School Old Boys/ V.U.T. by thirty six points. Monash Gryphons, who failed to score throughout the second half, were overrun by a rampant Old Geelong, who scored forty two times to three by the Gryphons, who thus lost by one hundred and nineteen points.
PREVIEW OF ROUND 3 SECTION 1 Reigning Premiers, Hawthorn, should comfortably account for Brunswick/ North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s in their early morning match. The greater talent pool and superior match fitness will insure another Hawthorn victory. The game between eighth placed Prahran/ Assumption and fourth placed Melbourne High School Old Boys should be an interesting encounter. The outcome will help judge just where the two teams rightly sit on the ladder. The “Two Blues”, who have been perennial finalists, have lost in successive weeks whilst “the Unicorns’ have a single win to their credit. On Toorak Park, I feel that Prahran/ Assumption can win for the first time in 2016. Old Xaverians, who travel to South Mornington, will receive strong opposition from the local side, who will be desperate to record their first win in SECTION 1 Hawthorn v Brunswick NOBSPC Prahran/ Assumption v MHSOB Old Xaverians v South Mornington St Francis Xavier v Richmond Central SECTION 2 Old Geelong v West Brunswick Monash Blues v UHS-VU Monash Gryphons v Swinburne University
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
Club XV111. I expect the Xaverians to overcome the local opposition, win the match and then continue onto the “Peninsula Playground around Portsea” for the week end. Richmond Central face the great trek to Beaconsfield to play the yet to win St Francis Xavier. A continuation of their last quarter form from Round 2 would see the home side victorious. I select them to record a narrow win largely due to home ground advantage.
SECTION 2 Old Geelong meet West Brunswick on Como Park in an early match. Even after two Rounds, these two teams have staked claims to be the strongest in the competition. I suspect a major reason for an Old Geelong victory this morning will be their marked home ground advantage because Como Park is so much bigger than the Ransford Oval (and most other grounds!!) I expect that Old Geelong will have too much run for their visitors and that they will maintain their unbeaten record. Monash Blues should be able to win at the expense of University High School/ V.U.T., despite the Royal Park based team showing improved form last week. In an academic encounter, Monash Gryphons host Swinburne University whose form over the first two Rounds was inconsistent … a big loss followed by a strong win … Although the Gryphons languish last, I select them to win today, largely because they hold the home ground advantage.
