ALL STAR ~- J ------'TEAM OF THE YEAR -A M 'I ' Although the selection process may need refining, the concept of naming a"best" team was well received by the followers of the VAFA during the season, and at the Vote Count when the team was announced . The team, a hybrid of the best players from the seven senior sections, certainly recognised our best players, even if it is no t the best VAFA team . One positive suggestion for improvement was for each section to have its Team of the Year, with each section's Captain and Player of the Year receiving the ASA statuette with other team members receiving a framed certificate. However we will look at building on what is a sound concept during the off season . The team that was announced last Monday B : Phil Av ~$y (Hawthorn), R ohan Price (Old Scotch- C), c : :1 Blood (Old Xavs ) HB : Ancl- =_째 orsburgh (Old Westbourne) . Sam McGee (Mon . -67 l.D Xaverians' super run is over. The win'ners of the past five A Section premiership s will not be able to overcome their injuries for today's preliminary final against a rampaging St Kevins . It is not easy to type these words as it would be sensational to see Xavs equal University Blacks' record of six A Section flags in a row set before and after the Second World War . The Xavs' medical room is a depressing place : Adam Jones - knee . Ben Coughlan - hamstring, Ted Woodruff - recovering from a broken leg, Dan Richardson - shoulder, Dave Landrigan back spasms, Chris Ellis - hamstring and Tim Gordon - ankle . Star of A Section Andy Gowers, returning after two weeks to overcome a calf strain, looked bland against the unfashionable half-back Sam Taylor. "The calf didn't affect me . I had a dirty day," Gowers said . Xavs are not the most popular team - winners are the benchmark that have to be surpassed - but in my three years of covering the VAFA Xaverians have been a football factory . The have terrific administration, a highly organised football department and playing depth (they have won four under 19 and two reserve flags during their run of five senior flags in a row) . In each of Xavs' flags they have averaged six changes in playing personnel . Last Sunday, in the 22-point second-semi final loss to St Bernards . 12 of the 21 players from last year's premiership took to Elsternwick Park. Three of those nine losses were Craig Kelly (12 marks at half-back in last year's grand final) . Simon Wood (35 possessions in the midfield), an d Matt Bourke (eight goals) . A weary Tim O'Shaughnessy, who coached Xavs to their past two flags, said the rebuilding process would start at the team's Monday recovery session . "We are still one win away from the grand final," O'Shaughnessy said . Garry Foulds pulled off the move of the day when he switched centre half-back Tait Wilkinson. who was beating Jones, to centre half-fonvard during Xavs' six-goal run in the third term with the breeze to the Glenhunttv Road end . Xavs got to within three points in time-on . He sent Nick Mitchell from full-forward to half-back and it worked superbly . Mitchell picked up possessions to add to his seven goals and the Bernies kicked three goals in time-on includuii one to Wilkinson . Foulds says this is
the pinnacle of his coaching caree r that started in the -~ ~ Goulburn Valley i n 1990 . "Yes, reaching the A Section Grand Final, the first for the club for 24 years, is the best," Foulds says . SKOBS and Xavs enjoy a bitter rivalry that stems from their Catholic schools' involvement in the Associated Public Schools sports competitions . St Kevs' first win ever over Xavs in A Section was in May last year and it drew a reaction like that of winning a flag . Ironcally, it was at Elsternwick Park . Since then Xavs have won two of the three contests including the latest which was at St Kevins' Toorak campus by four goals . St Kevs have done well considering they have played all around Gardiners Creek this season because their home ground, Ausdoc Oval, has been under going renovations . The SKOBBERS, in only their third season of A Section since inaugurating in 1947, are looking for their first berth in an elite grand final . Their form is the best out of the three finalists having won seven in a row. Assistant coach Mick Knuppel says rover Joe Sibilia has taken some of the pressure off fiill-fonvard Matt Lucas. "Around goals Joe wa .= handy against Uni Blues," Knuppel says . Sibilie got two goals in the 22-point win at Trevoi Barker Oval over the Blues who hit the final : with brilliant form having knocked over fmal : aspirants Trinity and Scotch . Blues ebach Lee Adamson savs his side i builit for marking. "Our trouble was our overa pace because we are big and the SKOBS ar more of a balanced team," Adamson says . A COUPLE of sub-plots in the preliminar final, Michael Blood, captain of Xavs . did 1 years schooling at St Kevins and he played h first senior game with the SKOBBERS, then in Section, before transferring to the A Section O: Melburnians and then to Xavs. How ironic wou it be if St Kevins' coach Mike McArthur-Alle who took Ormond to five A Section flags in s years - the fourth best in Amateur history - w, to be at the helm of the opposition that sto ; Xavs' attempt to equal the most successive Section flags ? NEXT Sunda_v's (August 27) VFL Grand Fins
are on the same day as A Section and this could be a headache for St Bernards . If Carlton makes it then Adam Merrington might have to play . I wonder what Carlton head-coach David Parkin . who is an Amateur supporter and played with Melbourne High, would do ? If Port Melbourne reserves make it Damian McLaughlin might be required . McLaughlin did not train with Port in the lead up to the Xavs match in which he kicked two telling goals . Brad B eitzel writes VAFA for the S unday Herald Sun . He can be heard tonight at 6 .25 on ABC 774 doing a VAFA update. IDei t E7 ClV . i -.IT3hsii- 7 _ .t''

lhere were no real surprise results last week, with the possible exception of Old Brighto n Magoos, who defied their ladder position and won . The stakes are very high today : a victory means A section and a GF berth . Good luck to all concerned . Review 1st Semi Final At Toorak Park, DLS came out of the blocks in the lst quarter, and it appeared that they came to play . They were playing the better footy, but couldn't convert their chances, and their kicking was letting them down big time . It was frustrating to watch, and I can *t imagine how much hair Paul Cooper would have shed during the quarter! The first goal of the game came from Boyle (NOBs) at the 14 min mark, which ironically, enabled NOBs to have a 1/4 time lead . The 2nd quarter was similar in that DLS were playing well, but it was the half back line of Vogels, Collison and Halpin that steadied the ship for NOBs . and they were able to make their opponents pay . Nine straight points before their first goal didn't help DLS's cause, and then two goals in 2 mins to NOBs saw them take a 16 pt lead into 1/2 time . The 3rd quarter was a funny one . North kicked the first goal of the quarter, before DLS took control of the game and dominated for the majority of the quarter, with Swift and Wood both making a few dashes down the ground, but could only manage 2 .6 in this period . DLS were paving the penalty of not giving off the first option . and right before 3/4 time, goalsneak Boyle bagged 2 goals in 2 mins, and the pendulum swung back to the boys from Brunswick . NOBs ended any DLS thoughts of a turnaround . when they booted the lst three goals of the quarter to put the issue beyond doubt . Booth continued on his merry way in the final term and had the ball on a string. Saad started to hold his marks and even booted a goal that smashed a window on the building out the back ! For the winners, the evergreen Booth was great for most of the day, and was well supported by Drum, Lock and Curry . DLS was best served by last week's All Star nomination in Swift, as well as Evans . Mannix and Goodier . 2nd Semi Final It was a nervous and tentative Old Brighton
that took the field against Maze- o~ . The flag favourites were second to the footy in the firs t quarter, and were getting slaughtered in the ruck and midfield . So much so . the 7 pt deficit should have been a lot more . In the second stanza . Dennis lifted his game, and that enabled more of his teammates to get into the contest . However, their opponents were still beating OB to the footy and for the first time in ages, they were made to look slow . Nearing 1/2 time, however, Ewert started to get on top in the ruck, and a Dennis goal on the siren saw the margin to be only 13 pts . Rather than go nuts, Dale Tapping quietlN encouraged his charges at the main break, a ntha se medtopaydivdendsa thelad erl aders went beserk where it counted : on the field The run that was missing was now suddenl} there. The stagnant midfield of OB found somf energy, and the 3rd quarter was a procession 8 .4 to 0 .2 tells the story . Whilst Dennis was run ning riot, it was that massive man Bradley wh( stole the show . He booted 5 of his 8 (all from 50n out on angles!) in this quarter, and the fat lad ; had appeared and was nearly ready to sing a 3/4 time when the margin blew out to 37 pts . Even though their opponents kicked the firs 3 goals of the quarter and were dominating th centre clearances, OB were able to boot 3 of thei own in a 6-7 minute period and steady the sh iThevctorynwmasAibeckon x year, whilst Mazenod live to battle another day . Bradley (8 goals) and Dennis were the stan outs for the winners, as too were Lennox an Ewert. For Mazenod, the papers reported thE Ryan, O'Donoghue and Murray were the bette players . Preview Preliminary Final - Mazenod (4/7) vs NDE? (5/4) The score stands at 1 each, with the respe live winning margins being around the san mark . There was only 2 pts and a handful of pe cent separating the two at the end of the yea That would indicate a close game is very posa ble . Dave Murray's cohesive, professional ar . structured approach has been the fresh air Mazenod has needed in 2000, and it has paid handsome dividends . The fact that they outscored the raging hot flag favourites in 3 of the 4 quarters last week is the proof in the pudding that the famous structured game plan is a ripper and doesn't break under pressure . A victory today is paramount for the boys from Glen Waverle-y, as they strive to erase the bitter disappointment of this corresponding final last year . It will not be easy, though . Frank Dunell's boys are in fine form at present. Last week it was the crumbers of Boyle and Skene who stepped up to the plate to kick the goals, and they were well fed by the evergreen veteran Booth . One could also sense that Saad was ready to let rip, and the open spaces of EP might just be the answer. The half back line were tremendous under pressure last week, and will need to be similar today . as the relentless running of their opponents will test them out . I'm going to tip Mazenod to win today, but not by much (10 pts), as I believe that anyone who can outscore Old Brighton for 3 quarters is very good . Also, I'm probably doing NOBs a favour, as every time I tip against them, they win . So I'll expect a dozen stubbies if you win today, Frank! Magoo s
Mazenod (2/5) vs OB (7/4) . An emphatic win to one . and a narrow loss to the other . The momentum is with OB at the moment, and I believe it will continue today, and Mazenod will depart in straight sets.
Mazenod - congratulate Steve "Super" Polan on playing his 150th game, for the club . Steve is very hard at the football and has great skills and is a leader both on and off the field . Mazenod again congratulates Steve and hope he plays many more for the club. TODAY'S MATCHES B SECTION PRELIMINARY FINAL - August 19, 2000 SENIORS Elsternwick Park, Elsternwick - 2 p.m.

forni while Therry may be flattened a bit after their third pretty good effort in trying to topple the Sharks just failed . Both have had 76 point victories over each other during the season so the ledger is square with no one having any advantage. It was a tough physical game on Saturday with Sunday's one perhaps a little less so demanding so Ajax even with the shorter break may just be that little fresher. Therry have a couple carrying injuries, while the Jackas are at full strength with even Julian Kirzner contemplating a return . Promotion is on the line here so there will be no quarters given or asked and perhaps to some I'm going for a bit of a radical selection by tipping Ajax to win today, earn promotion and the right to have a crack at Beaumaris in the big one next week . The Beaumaris Reserves do not want to be the only side in the club not to make a Grand Final this year and that motivation alone should be enough to get them over the line against a Prahran side that will not be easy to beat. My new club against my old club in a cut throat preliminary final not a pleasant thought for this scribe but I can handle it and am tipping Beaumaris to just win and advance next week . PRESS CORRESPONDENTS Goodbye and thanks to Barry Bird of Hampton Rovers for your efforts this year very much appreciated. Two weeks to go for those of us left keep those reports coming in . Don't forget the numbers 9-553 1561 phone or fax 0412 213 541 is the mobile or drop an e-mail to brainco@optusnet .com.au . Would be nice to hear from Therry again you have a hat trick of misses now .
Prahran - congratulates Neil "Robbo" Roberts who today plays his 200th game . part from the seamless organization and . genial helpfulness of Alan & Gary and th e Box Hill City Oval team, last weekend got off to a great start when Caulfield's black kelpie cross dog responded to the Ressies Coach, Kornel Dachs, pre-match command, "Stretch up!!" . by lying down, doing a high right leg lift, and licking its important bits! Strong on discipline the Fields are!! LAST WEE K SECOND SENII : Sat . 12 Aug. Seniors Caulfield Grammarians won a thriller against Old Essendon Grammarians, with extra time required to decide who clinched the first GF spot . Fields grabbed a handy break kicking to the Davey St . end in the lst Qtr, only to be blown apart by Grammar's 9 goal 2nd term . The 'speccy' of the day came in the 13th minute of the 3rd term, when Goodger leaped skyward in the Davey St . goal square, only to have Margerison soar even higher for a sensational grab & subsequent conversion . OEG clung doggedly to their 1/2 time lead, with the wandering D .Fletcher brilliant from one end of the ground to the other. HalfiNay through the last term OEG was six points up ; Sam Evans put them a further goal ahead in the 21st minute ; Arniet reduced the deficit to one goal at the start of time-on ; a great snap by Cowlishaw at the 26th levelled the scores; Pana goaled in the 28th minute to restore OEG's 1 goal margin ; in the 30th (& final) minute . Cowlishaw again snapped freakishly and truly to level up the scores just ahead of the siren! Caulfield continued their late command of the run of play into the 2 x 5 minute extra time periods, scoring 3-1 to 0-0 . and enjoy the elation of victory . Andrew Will had a fantastic game for the Fields, whether taking ruck knocks, streaming out of defence or linking effectively in attack ; Steve Amiet's clever play at FF kept the Fields within striking distance ; Simon Widjaja's hard ball gets were crucial to the final result ; and Rosman's contribution between the HB & HF lines was outstanding . OEG best was clearly D .Fletcher, whether kicking for goal or kicking out from FB : Scott MacPherson rucked superbly; Sam Evans was effective up forward ; & Papal was strong at CHB .
':eserves Ti : Field s started their day well against Grammar when they triumphed after a dour struggle, in which only a kick separated the combatants throughout the game until a minute before full time . when Evans steered through the clincher. In a defence dominated game, backmen Simon Mose, Scott Williams, and Justin Holloway stood out for Caulfield . For OEG, T. Mansfield did well in the ruck, and Grigg was effective through midfield . FIRST SEMI: Sun . 13 Aug . Seniors Aquinas Old Collegians went down to Monash Blues in an intense, hard slogging game which did not show off the skills that both sides possess to best advantage . The game had a simple story, the Blues established a 2/3 goal lead early, and try as they certainly did, the Blood= couldn't peg them back . The Blues had t ogamesfr ChitanGregoytF,Jh n Caldwell ruck roving, Ed Morrison who blanket. ed the dangerous Andy Cultrera, Dave Furnel whose rucking and field play was exemplary . anc Sam McGee, who frustrated Aquinas time anc again from CHB . Flanker, Cam Quinn, was bril liant for the Bloods, well supported by Sear Flynn and the courageous Cam Colliver on th( ball, but it just wasn't their day .
Reserves Monash Blues outclassed St Leo's Emmau; in what turned out an unexpectedly one side( affair. The Blues didn't give the Parks a snif after the first Qtr and cruised to an easy victo rDaleMurchiestaredfortheBluswith6bi; ones, Richard Walsh was rarely out of the play and Al Barry did good work at CHB . For St Leo' : Eddie Mitchell roved valiantly, Danny Lear wa strong in midfield, and Stephen McCann simila up forward . PRELIMINARY FINALS Seniors : Sat . 19 Aug . Old Essendon and Monash Blues confror today. with Grammar devastated by their 2n Semi loss, and Blues overjoyed by finally winnin a game at Box Hill! But OEG is not to be writte off on those accounts, in spite of having a nun her of good players off song last week, they wei THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2a
still good enough to push a very good side into extra time, and they will be determined to reverse their fortunes today . The Blues are in the happy position of being able to field their strongest side since mid season, and the returning players of last week, Caldwell, Creamer, & Holloway. will benefit from the lst semi hit out . The key, as always, will be midfield ascendency, and, if there is not a clear outcome there . then the clincher will be the fire power the Blues have up forward, combined with the better balanced look their defence has with Sam McGee in his customary CHB position . Mind you, it is rare for Peter Lutterschmidt to have two down games in a row, so the Blues defence will need to be at its sharpest . I'll go for the Blues by 2/3 goals, because the Gods seem to be smiling upon them, but then, we all know the Gods are crazv! Reserves OEG an d the Blues also compete in the dew kicker and I expect this to be a repeat of OEG's game against the Fields last week, nothing in it . Grammar has won both their encounters this season, and the Blues are going to have to pull something special out to reverse things . Marcus Spencer will have a fairly fired up crew in the turquoise guernseys today, and I expect them to win by a few points .

LOOKNG BACK :1. lun 'e by 35 YEARS AGO - 1995 t was an easy ride to the 'A' section Grand Final I for the Old Xaverians when they defeate d Ormond 14 .15 (99) to 6 .8 (44) . Best were Blood, Sassi, Bowen (O .X) . and Sebo, Grace . McDonald (Orm) . Old Haileybury won their back to 'A' section with an unusual victory over Mazenod who led for most of the day but ran out of legs and succumbed to the strength of O .H .'s . Mazenod led 15 .8 to 13 .8 at the last change but could only kick 3 behinds to O .H's 5 .3 . Best were Phillips, Walden, Dann (O .H) and Polan, Chilcott, Green (Maz) . There was high drama at Camberwell Sports Ground when St Leos and Aquinas OB met in the E East Grand Final . Aquinas turned a 10 point deficit at half time into a last change lead of 18 points . Jason Livingstone dominated the quarter for Aquinas with . four goals . St Leos opened the quarter brilliantly Paul Kelly kicked his third in the first minute, Vaughan goaled again in the fifth minute, Paul Kelly marked and goaled again, and then twice more, then Brendan Vaughan kicked his fifth to put the Two Blues 22 points up . Then the run of play changed . Aquinas kicked goals at 18th . 20th, .23rd and 30th (Anthony Whelan got 3 of the four) For the Bloods to go one point up . The Two Blues gained some composure, worked the forward until after a series of throw ins and ball ups, in the 33rd minute Martin Shacklock grabbed the ball in the pack deep in the pocket, and let fly for a behind . The scores were level, the siren sounded and it was on again next week . Best were Armstrong, Kelly (6 goals), Ronchi, Douglas, McKenzie, Corrigan (St Leos) and J . Livingstone (7 gls) . Flynn, Vankerhoven, Kenny . Hiney. Morice (Aquinas) . The umpires were Mark Bushfield . Colin Segota (Field) . Andrew Stephen, Matt Meier (boundary) and Geoff Grigg . Kevin Segota (goal) and they were all re-appointed to the replay at Mordialloc . Beaumaris won their first VAFA flag when they were far too strong for Peninsula O .B . in E South Grand Final, 18 .10 (118) to 7 .10 (52) . It was a disappointment to the Pirates as in the second semi only a kick separated them at the final bell . Best were M. Hanrahan . Sherwin, McGrath, S . Hanrahan . Bennett, King (Beaum) and C . Landry . Franks, Johnson . Bowen . A . Landry, Torossi (P.O .B) . Old Xaverians were ahead of De LaSalle all day in Under 19 P.F . to go on to meet Uni Blues in the
Grand Final . In the last two meetings Xavs were bolted ou t of the blocks an d kicked 8 goals in each first quarter only to be overrun by Blues in the second half. Would the Xavs be able to change this? North O .B and Beaumaris won Under 19 section 2 Central and Under 19 Section 2 South flags .
10 YEARS AGO - 199 0 Collegians with a 16 .1 .1 record, ran onto the ground hot favourites against 1987 - 88 - 89 premiers . Ormond . whose second half of the season had not been encouraging for the Monders supporters. And so it turned out . After an even first half, Collegians through James Bennett, Rick Schober and Steven Mount dominated the aerial duels . To show Collegians strength Ray Berzins came off the bench and kicked three goals . Final scores were 19.17 to 15 .7 . Best were Schober, Wallace, B . Ingleton (Coll) and P . McDonald . Gilmore Petering (Orm) . Umpires were Richard Simon and Brett Greene . As the season had progressed so had the strength of Old Haileyburians and the belief that Old Haileybury would at last win its way to 'A' section. And it was as predicted. It was all too easy, with O.H. defeating Kew 29 .15 to 9 .14 . Giant ruck man Kidgell was brilliant and Kraus (7 gls) and Tanner (3 gls) were very good players . Royston . L . Bradley and Harrison did best for Kew . In 'C' Uni Blacks beat Fawkner 14 .10 to 7 .12 Nick Heath, kicked 7 of the 14 goals but could no, make it into Blacks best who were reckoned to bf Glover, Radford and Russell . State Bank won their first 'D' section flag . Ii control all day against . Whitefriars, the Banker : beat the Friars 16 .14 to 12 .17 . Best were Gnell Short,T. Maher(SB) and Hay, Houston, M . Whit (W) . Ajax keeping the ball low to the ground had a 21 point lead against Old Geelong at the 20 minut mark of the second quarter . Old Geelong started t kick the ball long, got results and trailed by only points at half time . Height and marking power wer too much for the Jackers in the second half and 01 Geelong won 19 .15 to 10.7 . Cullen Gunn 01 Geelong captain, was outstanding, and Job Manton . Sam Furphy and Bruce Harwood wei stars . B . Goldberg, D .Marks and Bursztyn wei best for the losers . Tuc enenTFl IR FOOTBALLER 2C
It was a big day for Old Geelong as they also won the reserves, beating Aquinas 12 .15 to 10 .3 . A wonderful season ended disappointingly for Williamstown when St Mary's reversed the second semi result to beat the Towners 11 .11 to 10 .7 and take a flag in their first year in the VAFA. Wade, Huebner . Anderson (St Marys) and Mazouris, Temby, Gunn (W'town) were best . W'town also lost there serves grand final to UHSOB 10 .12 to12 .6 . 15 YEARS AGO - 198 5 De La Salle OC fought their way back into 'A' section Grand Final to give itself a chance of a hat trick of premierships when it game back from 31 points down halfway through the last quarter to kick 11 .4 to Collegians 1 .3 to win by 44 points . It was De La's persistence that finally got the better of Collegians high marking . Collegians slowed to a walk with De La running everywhere . Final scores were 25 .9 (150) to 17 .11 (123).Best were Kerin (9 gls), Harrington, Deveson . Greene, Cooke, Barry (De La) and I . Herman, Pollock, English (7 gls), Laussen, G . Parsons, Irvine. It looked as if Parkside's dream of 'A' section had come true when it led Marcellin by 22 points at half time but as in 'A' fortunes changed as Marcellin added 10 .8 tol .5 to win an immediate return to 'A' section . Marcellin had been unlucky in 1984 - one game outside the four and relegated . Best were Carr, Hellard, Psoras . Caffry, M . Getson, Petroff (7 gls), (Marc) and Williams, Sansonetti, Bradley, Torre, King . Griffiths (Park) . Final scores were 13 .12 (90) to 7 .13 (55 ) In 'C' section Grand Final Fawkner kicked 7 goals in the championship term to triumph over Therry . final scores 19 .15 to 12 .15 . Stars were M . Majerczak (7 gls), Kerslake, Mitchell (Fawk) and Cerini. Flaherty, Beidy (Therry) . Fawkner's lineup was Bks : M . M . Middlemo, S . Buckley, T. Burke . HB: K . Busst, S. Rhodes, P . Kerslake . In 'D' Old Trinity defeated MHSOB by 11 goals, in 'E' Heatherton 16 .19 defeated Preston, and in 'F' Brunswick gained a flag with a two point win .over Clayton . Old Trinity's lineup: Bks : A . Dobson, E . Borghesi, A . Maizels . HB : C . Robison, I . Wallace, S . Adgemis .C : R. Heath, A . Allibon . B . Reiniets . HF : D. O'Shaughnessy, D . Gee, G. O'Connor. F : S . Cowle, C. Brent, C . Glass. Rucks : R . Wardrop, T.Pontefract, T . Norman . I/C : G . Heath, N . Sammut . 20 YEARS AGO - 1980 'A' section Best and Fairest went to St Bernards elusive centreman Bernie Angel on a count back from high leaping ruckman Michael Yeo (UniBlues) . Both players polled 22 points, with Bernie scoring 6 b .o .g. and Michael 3 other awards were 'B' Mark Hibbuis (Coll) 18, Tom Mason (Old Scotch) 16, 'C' IM TuC enAATG1IR G(1llTRCI I FR'JMNI

AJAX and Monash Whites won 'E' and 'F' grand finals . 30 YEARS AGO - 197 0 Caulfield Grammarians won their first ever 'A' section premiership when they held off a magnificent last quarter bid by Coburg, who were trying for a repeat of their 1969 Nvin . Caulfield played wonderful football to lead 12 .15 to 7 .6 at the last change, only to see Coburg kick 8.4 to their 2.3in a whirlwind final quarter leaving Caulfield victors by 2 points . Congratulations went to coach John Wilson, captain David Williams and the stars of the game Larry McNichol, "Crewy" Barker and Greg Tootell . Old Scotch were far too strong for St Bernards in 'B' section winning 14 .22 . 106 to7 .9 .51 . The outsider also got up in 'B' section when St Bernards O .C . led Geelong by a point at the last change and then after the game was in the balance for all the last quarter, went away with three quick goals at the finish . Brunswick confirmed their supremacy over Reservoir Old Boys with a win in the 'E' section grand final by 21 points, and congratulated their coach Bill Barnes. A surprise was the victory of UHSOB in the 'C' section Grand Final where they reversed their semi final defeat by Old Carey with an easy 7 goal win, kicking 8 .4 to 1 .1 in the last quarter.

any coaches ar athletes have approached the sport psych much like a blindfolded shooter, with no specific target in mind . . . . few coaches have a spec ifi c plan for improving psychological readiness (mental toughness) for training and competition ., ' A periodised and integrated approach to mental training has previously been presented in this magazine (see past issues of Sports Coach) . The response to these articles has been very good, although some coaches have requested practical advice and tips to help apply these ideas . The aim of this article is to provide some valuable tips and then to present some case scenarios which outline the type of program a sport psychologist might follow in developing mental toughness . These general tips and suggestions are not completely exclusive or exhaustive but they should provide both the coach and athlete with further valuable advice for developing mentally tough athletes . In an article (Sports Monday, The Age, 12/1/98) Swedish tennis star and world number 4 Jonas Bjorkman was asked what was the key to his astonishing and dramatic improvement in his international world ranking from 69 to 4 during 1997 .He suggested that enhanced self belief was the major factor following concentrated work with a Swedish sport psychologist . His dramatic ascendancy has been paralleled by our own Australian tennis superstar Patrick Rafter who was seen as so successful during 1997 because of his mental toughness! (HeraldSun,SundayMagazine,18/l/98, 8-9) . This again leads one to ponder the impact of effective mental skills in elite sport . Various judges have suggested that the elite end of sport, success is up to 90% psychological, yet many sport teams do not fully commit themselves to this area . This is reflected in the quote above which demonstrates the lack of real planning adopted by coaches in mental toughness development . â–ş
Professionalism - being professional means covering all contingencies and ensuring optimal and complete preparation for your squad . Professionalism, includes recognising the importance of planning across a season addressing all the major factors (eg the sport sciences) in an inte~rated approach . Professionals stay positive and focused despite disappointments and distractions . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2000
Professionals approach their sport and success in a scientific and systematic way . Professional coaches are prepared to stretch themselves and their team by stepping outside comfort zones . They regularly analyse themselves, welcome peer analysis and give regular feedback to their athletes. Professional coaches present themselves as outstanding role models for their squad and are willing to practice what they preach . Professionals are mentally tough and successful . Focus on controllables - focus on things within your control . A major source of anxiety in sport is worrying about factors beyond one's control (eg weather conditions, form of the other competitors, winning and losing) . These factors distract you (and your concentration) from the important task at hand - your performance! It is therefore essential to take responsibility for your performances by focusing on yourself, your technique and your self talk . . . and to ensure that all these aspects are focusing on those things which can be controlled . Further more, success should be defined in terms of these performance factors and not outcomes (win/loss) . Commitment to those aspects that can be controlled is a powerful lesson and allows athletes and coaches to 'own' their performances . Practice through the use of successive simulations - it is imperative that athletes and coaches alike do not expect immediate success - they should expect small gains at first . Mental toughness doesn't just happen! Successful athletes need to work hard on fine tuning in this area just as much as for their physical skills and technique to ensure complete development across all aspects . Coaches and athletes are fully aware that physical skills proceed through similar stages . Coaches and athletes should therefore not expect immediate improvement but be prepared to persevere with developing these skills during the expected period of frustration and disappointment . At first, patience is required while athletes use and practice these skills in non-competitive situations, free from game pressures . Then, as athletes become adept and skilled in this area, more competitive simulations might be created requiring the application of such skills. Finally . athletes need to transfer this learning to real games and competitive situations . Re-printed Sports Coach, Autumn 199 8 25

KNITWEA RI omm REVIEW 2nd Semi Final Uni Blacks -v- Yarra Valley O B n perfect football conditions at Central Reserve, Uni Blacks opened strongly in the first quarter registering 6 goals and holding Yarra Valley to 4 points, with Wilson proving an excellent focal point with 5 first half goals . Despite the still conditions, Yarra responded with a 7 goal second term to square things up by the main break . The Blacks probably had the edge in the third but were comprehensively beaten in the final quarter, where Yarra's running game burst the game open on the way to a 5 goal victorv and the satisfaction of booking a place in the Big One and the important promotion . Positional changes in defence saw the Bushrangers rebound effectively from the back half. with the Blacks becoming perhaps a little Wilson-conscious and having a dearth of crumbers either around the goals or around the ground . Conversely . Yarra Valley spread its goal kickers evenly, with Stone the best of these with 4 . It was a convincing victory that has no doubt caused some headaches for Kane Bowden and his crew . whilst Tim Killworth's charges will have enjoyed their success (though perhaps not the 9 .30am recovery session on Sunday!), and the extra week's break . 1st Semi Final - Salesian -v- Parkside Salesian could not have hoped for better star t against Parkside, kicking 6 goals to 1 in the first term . They were first to the ball and teaming well, as has been a feature of their play in recent weeks . Parkside was able to settle as the quarter wore on but couldn't capitalise on its opportunities up forward . They trailed by just a couple of kicks at half time . Parkside's influential centreman/half back Brad Hockey was reported in the third leaving his side a man short, and despite McCall's dominance in the ruck, Salesian extended their lead to 29 points at the final change . After Parkside kicked the first goal of the last, Salesian was able to conjure a response against the breeze to again look as though the game was in the keeping . Parkside . however, dug deep and inched closer as their opponents' edge in pace and confidence diminished . A costly 25m penalty didn't help Salesian's cause and Parkside's runners stormed home to engineer a courageous I point win .
PREVIEW Preliminary Final - Uni Blacks -vParkside Despite losing to Salesian in round 18, I have no doubt that they would have been the Blacks' preferred opponents this week. Parkside will be only too aware of this fact and will look to impose as much physical pressure on the students this week as possible . The Blacks, ladder leaders for much of the year, looked brittle in the last quarter against Yarra and will have done much soul searching this week. They were second to the ball, outnumbered around the contests and flat . Laffy was in great touch last week but will need to be at the peak of his powers to overcome McCall's bulky frame and clever body work. Should he continue to get his hands first to the ball as he did last week, he'll be hoping the Blacks' onballers can capitilise - something they failed to do then . Wise will be another concern for the Blacks, the open spaces custom-made for the racehorse as he showed last week . Another problem area is up forward, where I expect Caccaviello will spend more time this week to present the Blacks with more options . The outcome of Hockey's tribunal appearance is sure to have a significant effect on the outcome . He has played the role of loose man in defense with aplomb of late and his absence could unsettle what is otherwise a pretty even line up . Provided Parkside can exert enough sensible physical pressure, I believe they can win . Conversely, the Blacks will make them pay should they have the luxury of an extra player at any stage, providing they can lift themselves up after last week . Panic can be a terrible affliction around this time of the year. but I think the Blacks will find a cool head somewhere and sneak home by 5 points . Reserves - Parkside -v- Yarra Valle y Parkside were outrun by Uni Blacks last week and will be determined to put in a better performance this week against Yarra Valley . Yarra, however, boast a swag of runners and some good tails and should be too strong for Parkside provided they can use the space available . Congratulations to Andy Campbell from Salesian OC in winning the D2 section award at the VAFA Vote Count . Andy has had a terrific second half of the season in particular and is e deserved winner. Congratulations must go to Ken Walker this week . The umpiring veteran officiated in his 400th match last week that is an outstanding effort . Ken's been around, well forever, and joins an elite list of umpires to run in 400 games . Well Done . With finals fever in full swing, we decided to do something a bit different and speak to a stack of umpires about their favourite VAFA final . Here are some of the responses .
and chased after him . It _ was amazing!" t KEVI N SEGOTA : "Oh my first A Section Grand Final was great . It was 1987 between Xavs and Ormond . It was a sensational game on a beautiful day and they played it hard . I umpired it with Greg Hardiman and that's what you umpire for. In final's footy . nothing tops an A Grade Grand Final . " LEAH GALLAGHER: "There's two finals I'll never forget . I boundary umpired both . The first was after a goal and we beat Steve McCarthy back to the centre with the ball at Elsternwick Park . The second was at Brunswick Oval in 1994 and I kicked the ball back to a player and Maccals face was covered in bewilderment . "You don't kick the footy in finals!" he said . " JAMIE KVINS : "It was 1990 and I umpired the C Grade lst Semi Final . It was my first senior final in the amateurs and Caulfield Grammarians played Fawkner. It was one hell of a wet day at Northcote Oval and the Grammarians got up by four points . I remember doing the warm up lap thinking . "man this is a senior final and I'm out here as part of it . "
John Miller JOHN MILLER: "Definitely last year's A Section prelim . I think I umpired the best I did for the entire season and I think it made me almost a certainty for the Grand Final the week after and history says that's what happened . It was sunny. it was hard and it was a real experience . I can 't even remember who played because I was so focussed on doing a good job . " GEOFF CURRAN : "I'll never forget the melee breaker free kick in the 1991 E Section Grand Final between Mazenod and Williamstown . A blue started so I gave the Williamstown bloke the footy and he had three blokes between him and the goal . I said "you're three goals down and there's 10 minutes to go, kick the ball" he looked at the fight, kicked the ball out of bounds and joined the fight . I got the ball back, handed it to the nearest Mazenod bloke and said the same thing . He couldn't believe his luck, took off,, passed the ball to his only team-mate not in the blue and everyone looked up, stopped fighting 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2000
We also asked four people what they thought of when final's football was mentioned . STEVE McCARTHY : "I go right off in finals. Without sounding like a big head, finals are what I do . I love the big occasion, I enjoy it and I'm good at it . You don't have a big build up because you get too nervous so I just worry about it at 1 .30 . " RICK LOVE : "I just think of the increase in tempo in the game, the crowd support and the whole atmosphere of the situation . " LUKE JOHNSTONE: "I don't think of Richmond because we're never there! I think of the hard slog from day one, the pre-season, the reward and the game that I'll get . . .one day . " RUSSELL OWENS : "There's a lot more pressure, the players are harder at the ball and every contest means something . It means everything to everyone . It's more aggressive and therels bigger crowds ." Fax 9564 721 8 e-mail craig .o'donoghue@acpaction .com.au 3

re able to run out winners ani )t in the GF with a gritty wi n over ~n . Willy jumped from the blocks early e A with Hynes dominant across half back . Cocks firing in the middle and Lee and Twist marking ever~,thing, the signs were ominous for the House . A rarely seen "double goal" compounded the situation and saw the Willy boys lead by four goals at 1/4 time . Although a good start, their dominance of the game wasn't reflected on the scoreboard, always a worrying sign .
The House worked back into the game in the second stanza, with their midfield of Robertson and Rolls in particular becoming damaging . Hynes was still having a big influence for Willy whilst the gun forwards were being well held . Willy by a couple of points at the half . The game continued to be a tough and close affair in the third quarter . The loss of Rampling to injury meant that some of the midfielders needed to stand up for the House and McCrae was the man to do so . He got plenty of the ball and drove it down to Captain Craven at CHF who was now having a big influence on the game. Matthews work around the pack for Willy was histrumental in keeping them in the game but the warning signs were there . The House drew away in the last quarter, with once again Robertson and Craven the significant players . Morris continued to negate Dumbo Williams influence whilst at the other end . Searle, whilst not dominant had a hand in a number of goals . Overall, best for the winners included Robertson . Craven . Lloyd, Rolls an d orris whilst Willy were best served Hynes, Featherstone . Phemister and Hart . A win for the House but not overly conclusive . Still plenty of light at the end of the tunnel for Willy . F; .,e t c =y. 7~'i n â‚Źal
". Centrals were able to advance t o the preu tinary final when they accounted for St . Johra; ; in a torrid affair . Frank Macak was at his brilliant best for the winners whilst Trav Graham was an absolute rock in defence for Centrals as well . Up forward, Andrew "Thighs" Fawcett served notice of things to come . Interesting to note and rather ominous, the usual suspects at Richmond weren't in the best, a very good sign .
Y ! _~ = was able to defeat St .Joians in a hard fought encounter . With multiple goalkickers a feature of their day, the Uni High boys can look forward to next week's game with great confidence . Willy were able to defeat Power House and book a seat a the Grand Final breakfast . Willy ran over the top in the last quarter and will start short price favourites in a few weeks time . Preview
Pre, minary Final ' V Richmond Central s A few key match ups . Hynes and Siwka?, Dumbo Williams and the Chief Shannon? Daisy Williams and O'Sullivan, Cocks anti Andonopolous? Clearly the key match ups but how often are the lesser lights the stars in finals ? Richmond are the talls, with the likes of the Shannons, Siwka, Smith and Waters all capable of dominating games with their aerial skills. Willy have a bit more of a mix, not quite as tall but still capable of the big mark . Twist, Lee and Hynes fall into that category whilst the great man at Full Forward for them is in an entire category of his own . Richmond will be heading into the game with confidence high and the feeling a roll has started whilst Williamstown will need to shake the disappointment of last week and get on with the job at hand . I tipped against Richmond last week and they proved me wrong . Does lightning strike twice? I saw something in Willy last week that suggests they will not be a spent force . Williams needs to fire, if he does they win and join the House in the GF !
Magoo s Preliminary Final Power House V Urei High School Old Boys Interesting game . Will the vagaries of eligibilitv effect some selections for the House or will the reverse apply and they get a few back? Risk them or play them? The joys of coaching hey Kev and Richie! Anyway, Uni High always put in notable performances come final's time and I expect this to be no different . Veteran Jimmy Hall is the catalyst for the House, a true match day warrior . Mills only kicked a couple last week but will n o A'ft -ruc nAen'f'c . 1. C(1hTR011 FR'J(7f(1

,he winners were as expected last weekend bu t :_ the two games proved to be far more intriguin g iiian just the plain old results show . Bentleigh are through to the Grand Final and Eltham are out as we are down to just three sides . REVIEW 2nd SEMI P'INAI. The clash between Bentleigh and South Melbourne out at Scammell Reserve was an amazing affair . The Demons started like a house on fire in what was a free flowing and high scoring opening term . Chris Sharp, finding plenty of space in the Bentleigh forward line, was everywhere and had an individual tally of seven goals at the first break as the Demons opened a handy break . The trend continued in the second term as Sharp booted another five to have (12) at half time as the game was all but over as a contest with Bentleigh more than 70 points up . However the South side was far from prepared to throw in the towel in the second half as they began to win the ball out of the centre and started to take control as Downing was creative across half forward . With the supply to the Bentleigh forwards drying up and the Demons missing opportunities in front of goal South were able to cut the margin . McDougall . King and Hogan again battled hard to give Hall (4) and Wright (4) chances in the final term as South added some respectability to the scoreboard with Bentleigh eventually running out (40) point winners . Sharp ended up with (14) in a remarkable individual efforts for the victors as Henry and Martin provided plenty of drive and the steady hands of Evles down back were also important . 1st SEMI FINAL In another topsy turvy encounter Syndal Tally Ho were the ones with their heads in front at the right time as they knocked off Eltham by a solitary point at Toorak Park . The Turtles started well but the Synners hit back to hit the front before a crackerjack last term that had everything . In the end it was the old adage, bad kicking is bad football, that came back to haunt the Eltham side . Despite kicking into the breeze in the last term the Turtles dominated the majority of general play only to let themselves down in front of goal as they booted 2 .7 . On other hand Syndal couldn't have been more effective with their forward thrusts as they booted two crucial goals to seal the tightest of victories . Hannemann, Joy. Sheer and Brown were best for the Synners whilst Hardie in the ruck,
Sm, the, Horsburgh through the middle as well as Mann led the way for the shattered Eltham side . PREVIEW South Melbourne Districts meet Sync-_ ---, Ho in today's Preliminary Final for the right to meet Bentleigh in the big one . The records of the two sides during the season were ridiculously close with the South side finishing a mere two percentage points clear at the end of (18) home and awav rounds . Both sides have also shown that they have a number of players up forward who they can look to and this versatility will be a big part of today's game . As well as this both came away from last week's games with injury clouds and will have done everything possible to get their best line ups on the track . If Hannemann and Cachia can take control in the midfield and stop the run of South out of the middle they will go a long way to winning this match . The forwards of both sides, namely Thompson and Vanderkruk from the Synners, and Wright . Daly and Downing for the South side, will also have a huge say in the outcome of this game meaning both backlines have their work cut out . A close encounter is on the cards and South will have to make sure they are switched on from the first bounce . If they can do this they may just get over Syndal to earn another crack at the Demons . RESERVES St M arys won their way through to the Reserves Grand Final with a comprehensive win over Werribee in the Second Semi Final . In the other game North Brunswick avenged a recent loss at the hands of Bentleigh to move into today's preliminary . Briffa, Boudoloh and Marin and a steady defence lead the way for North while Pirie, Codraine and Fly for best for Bentleigh . PRESS CORESSPONDENT S Please fax match details to 9457 1580 and I can also be contacted on 0409 571 580 .

(U19/1 & Blue) Sports & F~iedicali Supplie s c rxew Section 1 -hat a fantastic weekend of U19 football . It began with SKOBS v . Xavs - the winner through to the GF and has the valuable week's rest . The game is fast, ferocious and pressurised! Rigby on the dangerous McDonnell, Pullen on the playmaker Calman, and result win, win! SKOBS pull out to a 42pt lead at the main break and only allow up 10pts at the end . SKOBS won by dominating the "hard ball gets" at centre bounces and around the ground . For Xavs a game of missed opportunities when it mattered most - shots, tackles & turnovers . Against T .C .O .'s committed unit, this can't be done and still win . Sunday, an absolute thriller! lst quarter saw the running Old B . team, switching the play, marking all over the ground and dominating the packs. 2nd quarter saw Uni attempting to close the game up, slowly making inroads on the scoreboard . But 4 turnovers - costly . 3rd quarter saw a terrific battle between Cheevers and Dickerson at CHF . Uni were definitely getting back in the game but not on the scoreboard . The last saw Uni storm home through Fricker . Birtley & Fallow but were finally held back by the "tide breaker", Dickerson at CHB with 2 sensational grabs . Stewart and Smith were rock solid under that enormous wave of pressure . Section 2 Beaumaris continued to show the form that has only seen them lose one game for the entire year by marching into the Grand Final with a sixteen point victory over Old Scotch in the Second Semi-Final . Beaumaris now have the week off to get ready for the only match that really counts. and without a doubt they are odds-on favorites to win the premiership . The Sharks had stand out performances from Edge . Tucker, and Tuck, while the major goal kickers were Blackmore with three, and Magee and Brook with two . To their credit Old Scotch fought the game out well, Brooke was their leading goal scorer kicking 2, while Wilson-Humphries, Page and Colman were all in the best. In the first Semi-Final Whitefriars proved my predictions of a close game to be drastically wrong with a well-earned seventy point victory over Old Trinity. The Friars were led by fine performances from Barugh . Baker, and Langord, while Graham was brilliant with six goals and was well supported by Purtell and Crea who
(U19''2 & Red)
kicked three apiece . Ellerback, Carter Buszard, Hine, and Burrows all played Tell in what was a disappointing end to a season for Steve Maus' Old Trinity, after some good early season wins they just couldn't go on with the job . Congratulations to Old Trinity's Cornell who had a terrific season kicking a section leading 57 goals . Section (2) Blue A nother absolute thriller between these twc evenly matched sides, with both coaches working overtime with match ups and counter moves . Aquilina was proving a h andful until Ormond' ; Coach Hille- placed a tag . Coach McKillop retaliates by tagging the d an gerous Ferrari after hat time dramatically curtailing his influence . Fo i Ormond, Heffern an was good in the first half Matinov, Luba and Noske were 4-quarter con tributors . For the winners, MacDonald, Wood Aquilino an d Brown were terrific . Scores level a full time saw extra time played and the resul could have gone either way . Special mention t the Umpires, especially young Paul Berry for well controlled perform ance . Thanks Harry. After a sensational game on Saturday, eve n, one was looking forward to this engrossing bai tle between St . Leo's an d the Blues . Both team began the game nervously, jabbing at each othe trying to work themselves into the game . TI :. Blues brothers seemed to settle slightly quicke There was a terrific contest going on betwee Cavicchiolo and Woods, with Golding providir plenty of spark for Monash . With the game se tling, Leithbridge and Dick battling, the mat( was being fought out in great spirit and hi E intensity . At the main break, Coach O'Sulli w called for his chargers to give that little bit mor to dig deeper into themselves to push their bo ies that bit harder . He used Moss as a cataly for this appeal and it worked . The St . Leo's Bo stuck to their game pl an and eventually ove carne a very stubborn an d determined Monasl Section 2 Red After being well defeated by Old Essend last week Old Camberwell got the last laugh a showed that it's the big games that really cou by pulling off a fi fteen point victo ry to go direc into the Gr an d Final. The Wells trailed by o point at three quarter time but ran over th opposition to record a memorable victory an d f - e -- ire Pn[1TRAi I FR ,

week's break . Unfortunately I received no best or goalkickers for Old Camberwell . Old Essendon were led by three goals from Clues and two from Burbridge, while Cetin . Slater, Jinks and Wuchatsch all played well . North Old Boys firmly grasped their spot in the preliminary final with a decisive seventy-six point victory over Rupertswood in the first SemiFinal at Garvey Oval Parade College . Delahunty and Edwards were the major goal kickers for the winners kicking six and five respectively, and Joyce chimed in with three . Maplestone and Toohey were also good for the NOBs while Kean put in an outstanding performance . Despite a disappointing end to the season Rupertswood should be proud of their achievements, and if they can maintain their core players should look forward to more success next year . Congratulations to Ben Hakim of Old Essendon for taking out the leading goal kicking title for this section with 76 goals, a fantastic effort considering the small amount of games he played . Preview
Section 1 Preliminary Final Week sees us back at Parkdale Thunder dome to witness the "vanquished" Xavarians host the Old Brighton running machine . (No doubt T .P.O . will be there with clipboard and Dictaphone!) The weather forecast sees sunny skies, which will allow both teams to show off their aerial skills . Both teams favour a long kicking, high marking game, but one team has a fantastic skill in being able to switch the play under pressure . This is why I am going for an upset by selecting Old B .'s! Sorry Manni! Coach Brown has a terrific game plan and when the players follow it they are the best running team in Section 1 . Marry that with strong marking forwards . Adamis across the FF line . Ginnavin and McGillivray across HF, a winning score looks likely . Aided by the in form duo of Smith (Ruck) and Dickerson across HB . But Old B .'s tread warily . If you can't sustain the "game plan" for 4 full quarters . watch out! This Xavs team will keep coming at you! No doubt Manni will have worked out a pathway for Calman to rid his tagger and help Dixon pump the ball forward to McCarthy and Chambers . No slow start to the game either . I expect a very tough encounter . O .B .'s by 8pts .
Section 2 This week the section 2 Preliminary final takes place on Saturday 19 at Toorak Park Armadale between Old Scotch and the Whitefriars to determine who will challenge Beaumaris in the Grand Final . The Friars have managed to win both their meetings for the year, firstly in round 8 when they won by only six points and again in round seventeen when they managed an impressive last quarter comeback to gain victory . The conditions and great defending has kept both games tight and with relatively low
1 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2000
scoring and this week shouldn't be any exception . Old Scotch will not only need big efforts from leading goal kicker Brooke and the likes of Barugh . Crea, and Wilson-Humphries, but also some of their more quiet players will have to step up if they're going to make the Grand Final . Despite missing some of their best players last week the Friars still looked good and I think they'll be too strong for Old Scotch once again and win by about 10 points in another close game . Section ( 2) Blue The never say die St. Leo's face the Ormond Mosquito Fleet back at Bentleigh in a game which could go either way . The last time these two sides met there was only 16 points in it, Ormond's way. That day Ormond jumped them early and maintained the deficit, so Coach O'Sullivan would have his team fully prepared to withstand the opening onslaught . Do that and they're half way home . The key to St . Leo's fortunes is to spread the goal kicking between the likes of McKean, Cherry, Irvin and Podbury . They will need to move the ball quickly, open up some space in the forward line to give their forwards enough room and opportunities to kick a winning score . But alas these St . Leo's Boys have to overcome the Ormond defence clearly the most miserly in Section Blue . This is Coach Hille's biggest weapon and one, which Coach O'Sullivan will find hard to combat . Couple this with Ormond's fleet footed on balling machine and a win seems inevitable . Note : Congratulations goes to Steven Aquilina from South Melbourne Districts for winning the Section Blue Best and Fairest . Section 2 Red In their two meetings this year Old Essendon Grammar and the North Old Boys have split the games with the Grammar winning conformably in round 2, while the NOBs gained revenge in round 11 by recording a hard fought four point victorv 77 to 73 . This week they meet again in the Preliminary Final at the Garvey Oval Bundoora to see who has the right to take on Old Camberwell in this year's Grand Final . Old Essendon will be hoping for the return of goal scoring machine Hakim to give their offence a much needed boost, with or without him they will have to be careful that they don't play with too much overconfidence in their own ability . If they drop this one it doesn't matter how good they played earlier on in the season, as it will be all over for the year . North Old Boys . like their opposition . didn't seem to have the same depth and strength in their team for the second half of the year, but to their credit they continued to play good football and thoroughly deserve their place in the Preliminary Final . In what I'm sure will be a display football at its best I'm going for Old Essendon to beat the NOBs by 5 goals and gain entry into this year's Grand Final . 51
