isc football is back. Eight months must constitute the ,es,_ off season of all time and has it been a busy ai with legal proceedings consuming much time an d ost- Olympic sponsorship hangovers making the ir;ug of sponsorship dollars difficult, the extensive ou our website development and many other issues we made the term "off- season" an incongruous i. se, son promises to be as big, busy and bright as ever . cciding not to commence after Easter, this has meant almost every weekend will either see home and away chcs played or representative matches . We have been znate enough to secure matches in Melbourne this on against the West Australian Amateur League (to 6ainst the VAFA C-D4 representative team in )ourne on April 3), against the South Australian „ ir League (to play against .the VAFA senior team in

ne on April 10) and the senior team again play s Victorian Country, again in Melbourne (on July 22). June 3 and July 22 matches will see players selected ing a round of club football and we are appreciative of :Iubs who have supported this.

i

e time of writing we are hopeful of securing Colonial jum for the playing of at least one of these senior :hes.

hter umpire uniforms. i the support of Sportscover Insurance and Schweppes Field and boundary umpires this year will be seen in a design of uniform with a splash of color added . Each u npire will wear a number which will be consistent Ins/her name which will appear in one of four lists ~veek in the "Amateur Footballer" on the page besides 'Umpires' Corner` column.

'A signs Agreement with Football Victoria of the most contentious issues has been whether we -ly sign an agreement or retain our absolute adence. After months and months of deliberation , C'FA a fortnight ago signed an Agreement which in edoes not hinder our independence yet makes us a bar of a body which represents football in this state most importantly is the only body that will b e

d

recognised by the AFL . What does this me an ? Simply the benefits are m any. We will be part of PHIL STEVENS a "big picture" that will develop football at all CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICE R levels in Victoria ; we will receive transfer fees as players are drafted or existing exVAFA players reach AFL milestones as well as other financial support for other projects that can be presented and justified . For example, Football Victoria assisted financially with the construction of the new fence at Elsternwick Park even before we were formally a party to the Agreement. We are awaiting the VMFL (Metropolitan League) and the VCFL (Country) to sign and then we eagerly await Football Victoria (with us), addressing issues such as providing compensation for clubs that may be disadvantaged by the decision of the AFL to broadcast live against the gate (2002) ; negotiating financial relief for clubs, leagues and associations who find it difficult to pay spiralling ground rental charges as well as providing realistic insurance costs and better legal protection for all volunteer participants. We wish Football Victoria's chairman Neil Busse, CEO Ken Gannon and the board well in their endeavors .

Did you know that for this year. . . . . . . . . . . . . ? Cards have been introduced into Amateur football for use by the umpires? Each ground must be marked with 45 metre arcs and there is a rule pertaining to these arcs? A new rule has been brought in which should enhance ruck play? Please refer to the "Umpires' Corner" column for full details .

Good luck. On behalf of the new VAFA president Richard Evans, new Executive chairman Bruce McTaggart, the Executive Committee and the VAFA Administration, I have great pleasure in wishing you all well for the season ahead . Welcome to another exciting season of Asection amateur football . The professional leagues have been back on the field for several weeks now so amateur footy followers should be champing at the bit at the prospect of today's round one clashes . Hope always springs eternal at this time of the season . There's been a certain amount of familiarity to the opening round report of A-section football for as many years as anyone cares to remember (six actually) . The central theme, of course, has revolved around just how good those Old Xaverians were last year, and to what extent they're going to be half a yard quicker, half a foot taller and half a game stronger in the year to come . It's not a question I will attempt to tackle, but rather, here is what Old Xaverians triplepremiership winning coach, Tim O'Shaugnessy, had to say about his charges' prospect of notching up flag no . 7 and thereby totally eclipsing once and for all University Blacks' record six consecutive premierships . "We're pretty excited about it all . The goal of winning 7 is something really exciting around the club, probably even more so than the last few years . Getting that record, achieving that goal has really got the club going. We've got something to strive for, because if we win it this year we'll become the greatest club, rather than just equalling the record . That opportunity will never come along again . " It's worth noting that just five players from last year's premiership team will be missing from the 2001 model Xavs, and only about 6 or 7 players from the full squad, and given the club's strength across all three grades, the reigning premiers will undoubtedly field a terribly strong line-up again . Worth noting too, the names Dillon, Richardson, Bowen an d Blood . The quartet have played in each of the Xavs six premiership-winning sides, a remarkable fea t

and a source or envy for footballer s throughout th e country. Xavs' opponents today, Old Scotc;i, know too well the awesome strength of their opposition, having lost the odd grand final to the mighty red and black over the past few years. Brendon Mason has been quick to earn the respect of his club in his brief time at the Cardinals but Mason is not the type to be patting himself on the back over last year's 10-8 record (due to work commitments Brendan has stepped aside an d Andrew Smith be Senior Coach for 2001 - Brendan will remain in a coaching capacity at the club) . Most believe Scotch have the talent to launch an assault on September action so don't expect the Cardinals or their coach to settle for anything less than a finals berth . The most appetising clash from today's matches pits St Kevins against University Blues - last year's third and fourth-placed teams - in a replay of the 2000 first semi final . The Blues conceded the lowest number of points against last year and Lee Adamson's water-tight backline was a big factor in the club's success and ultimate appearance in September action . Their opponents today, St Kevins, fell just four points short of a grand final appearance last year, knocked out by the eventual premiers in the preliminary final in what was clearly the SKOBS best account of themselves under the tutelage of their successful and hyphenated coach, Mike McArthur-A llen . A talent-laden side with good players across most lines, no doubt SKOBS will be looking to go one better in 2001 . Old Brighton return to A-section football determined to secure a permanent spot in the amateurs' premier division having straddled the B-section and A-section competitions over the past few years . Few could question Dale Tapping's success at the club but the experienced coach will still be feeling cheated

of a premiership given that Old Brighton were clearly the best-performed side of B-section throughout 2001 . Brighton may have won two games more than Mazenod during the home-and-away fixture last year but they lost the big one - the one that counts - and that should leave the club with a bitter taste that needs to be erased from their mouths in . old Trinity could well be feeling a 2001 similar sense of a goal not quite achieved given that Leigh C arlson and co . finished just one win short of a finals berth . Carlson is :~ astute coach with a talented team ; teams ,_,, , treat Trinity with anything less than l,-,pect do so at their peril . i-iazenod open their 2001 season account h a B-section flag under their belts and the ;yhty expectations of a supporter base N,:e in to see the Nodders build on a strong foundation and keep their place in A-section . Expect a strong showing from David Murray and his charges today, but the Mazenod coach must have drawn a big breath when he ran his finger down the fixture to find the club's season-opening clash would be against St Bernasds . The 2001 A-section runners-up caused headaches for every team in the competition last year and I don't fancy this tough side to be in any mood other than a

savage one today given the ultimately disappointing end to last season . Having beaten the all-conquering Xavs in September (August) last year in the second-semi final, Gary Foulds will be heartened to know that his team can beat the best, but that won't ease the pain of the sneaking suspicion that maybe last year was one that got away . The final clash of today's opening round sees Marcellin host MHSOB at the College ground in Bulleen . Two teams with plenty to prove, neither the Eagles nor the Students could truthfully claim to be happy with their efforts in 2000, with both teams returning 6-12 records that hardly kept them free of the relegation zone . Luke Soulos has taken over the reigns down at Melbourne High and will have the difficult task of harnessing the Unicorns' undeniable but erratic potential, while Simon Dalrymple has the unenviable task of transforming Marcellin from a meek team of also-rans into a powerful, finalsthreatening club . Good luck to all players, coaches and clubs for a successful and injury-free year . And good luck to all supporters for season 2001 here's hoping your team wins on the day.

Greetings and salutations to everyone for the 2001 footy year . You have the pleasure (or pain) of seeing my ugly mug again this year . It seems like an eternity since premiership celebrations were going on . Good luck to all and sundry this year . I've rounded up my coat pullers in an attempt to find out what's happening around the traps with each club . Here's what the drum is . . . . Old Ivanhoe - g .~ "rT and Paul Fahey give 01 a Parade fl, our, as they take over one of the relegants from A grade in 2000 . Sources tell me that a few high profile names have departed. Whilst the practice match form was nothing to write home about, it was only 2 years ago 01 were A grade finalists . Expect them to be in and around the final four . Old Melburnians - New coach Erwin Leyden has been faced with the reality of a number of senior players leaving with the drop down to B grade . There's also that other distraction which will surely not be helping their cause . If the club can maintain their focus on the footy, they will be more than competitive, although history shows that very few teams are promoted straight after being relegated. De SaIts been business as usual at Malvern, where Paul Cooper has been busy on the beat in an attempt to return to A grade . This has included a very tough preseason, where the emphasis has been on fitness . De La are looking to build on last year's first semi final appearance, go two better and earn promotion in 2002 . Old Paradians - There has been a mass change in personnel at Bundoora . A revamped committee and coaching staff has been the result of a clean out . Star players have been jumping out of the trees, giving new coach Matt Ryan plenty to get excited about . The torturous pre-season began when Brew charged home with the Cup, and the momentum continues to build at the home of Br Garvey. My mail is that Ryan is an

e x c e l l e n t strategist, and with large numbers at training, a top two finish is almost a certainty! North Old Boys - The dogs are barking in . Brunswick!! I% - ' : - s.aaell has kept most of last year's list, and with the addition of some big name recruits, the rumour is that NOBs will 'do an Essendon' this year . That is, they'll go through undefeated and clean up in the finals . Unbeatable is the word I keep hearing, and whilst a lot can happen, a premiership is a mere formality according to those in the know . And no, Frank, I'm NOT making it up! ! Whitefriars - Under new coach Greg Feutrill, Whitefriars will be looking to consolidate again in B grade and maybe even eye off a spot in the four . That may be a tough task, however, as apparently a few players have left the Donvale club, and, as has been with a lot of clubs around Melbourne, high quality replacements have been hard to find . However, with the backing of a strong school and quality juniors, this still may be possible . Old Haileybury - It's been a tough preseason for Mick Dwyer this year. A number of higher proffle players won't be pulling on the boots this year. Combine that with a disappointing year from the U 19s, it may a tough year down at McKinnon. Stranger things have happened, though, and last year's enigmas could surprise everyone . Therry - The chaps from Oak Park have one thing on their mind . A grade. The committee has been going gangbusters in the off season, and the signing of Wayne Harmes is testament to their persistence . Make no mistake, this mob are quite capable of coming up from C grade and finishing top four . Beaumaris - The bongo drums have been banging loudly down at B grade's resident beachside suburb . Only half a dozen or so players are left from last year's GF side . Whilst this may spell doom and gloom in normal circumstances for Jim Durnan, their

U19s were Section 2 premiers last year, so they have a winning culture, and may surprise a few pundits this year . orvaond _After a blazing start to the year in 2000, the residents of E . E . Gunn fell away towards the business end . New coach Ian Jj_,ckn2an has been busy in the off season, attempting to move upwards towards finals and promotion . The pre-season form has been steady and combine that with the home ground advantage in Mr . Gunn's backyard, it indicates they'll be around the mark again . Naturally, it would be remiss of me not to i 1 ~ ive done some homework myself . So I spoke to our bookie friends at Vanuatu and Darwin, and theyve come up the markets for the year . Such was the unanimous thought that NOBs would be a stand out, I requested a quote for an undefeated season . I was told 3/ 1 was the best on offer, and rd needed to be Maurice Greene to get it ! Reserves Seniors Old Melburnians 6/4 4/6 NOBs NOBs 4/1 Old Paradians 3/1 6/1 Ol d Old Melburnians Paradians 9/ 2 Ormond 8/1 16/1 De La Salle Therry 10/1 16/1 Therry DeLaSalle 10/1 Old Ivanhoe 20/1 Old Haileybury 25/1 Ormond 25/ 1 Old Ivanhoe 33/1 nmaris 50/ 1 50/1 Beaumaris Old Haileybury 50/1 66/ 1 Whitefriars 66/1 tWhitefriars Most of us would have at some time played "Pin the tail on the Donkey' . Well, as you can all appreciate Fm still playing it as I attempt to find the winners of the season opener. Still can't get the right end of the donkey . . . . • Old Haileybury (2 / 1) play host to De La Salle (4/11) at McKinnon . The big ground will suit the DLS running game and the away side will be too good by 35 pts. The 2000 C grade GF replay is between I3eaumaris (7/4) and Therry (4/9) down by the beach, where orange juice will be sold by the truck load . I think that the result will still be the same as that game, and Harmes and his boys from Oak Park will go home with the trolley full when they win by 28 pts . Old Ivanhoe (1/5) and Whitefriars (7/2)

meet at Chelsworth Park . The home ground advantage is too hard to ignore, and I think that the home side will give Sholly a good kick start to the year when 01 'land the bickies' by 45 pts . NOBs (1/3) and Old Melburnians (15/8) should be an interesting clash at Brunswick (that's Melways #29E6, for those OMs who wish to go to Wangaratta!!) . On paper, this seems like this should be a close contest . However, the raging flag favourites will live up to the huge boom on them and win like good things should, when Leyden and his men are sent packing . NOBs by 32 pts . Ormond (11 / 4) make the trek out to visit Br Garvey and face the resurgent and super fit Old Paradians (1/4) . The away side has a very good record against the OPs, however, today is square up time for the green and purples, and Tll go out on a limb here, and tip a massacre . OPs by 66 pts . Where does one start?? Tll lead with my chin on a few here . De La Salle (1 / 7) vs Old Haileybury(11 / 2) De La to win by 30 pts . Beaumaris (6/ 1) vs Therry (1 /8) Therry to win 39 pts . Well here we go again . After an 8 month sabbatical Footy is on the road again . It certainly has been a long break all batteries recharged and all enthusiasm should be to the forefront as we kick off another Ammo season today . Things in C-Section will be a little bit different this season as having over the summer severed my ties with Beaumaris, I have absolutely no club involvement at all, and therefore no bias whatsover in what I write during the season . Hopefully this will allow you the clubs to be a bit more forthcoming in information provided to me and thus making this a well read and appreciated column. At this stage I plan to see at least 2 matches each weekend so that I will know what I am writing about, if you have any queries likes or dislikes about what and how I write the column please feel free to approach and discuss it with me . Of course if you so wish I am open and available for any Luncheon invitations etc . etc .

Good Luck to all Coaches, Players and Administrators associated with all clubs, may we play the game in true Amateur spirit for the enjoyment of sport and may the best teams win. SUMMER FOIBLES. AJAX . The Jackas have enjoyed a pretty good season and believe they are certainly fitter than this time last season, and are very impressed with the way new Coach Mark Sarau has the boys firing . The loss of Gab Dukes (Overseas) and And rew Kalinski (retired at this stage) will hurt but they have improved their depth with the return of a few players from 99 . Practice match form is encouraging with impressive performances against higher grade clubs in Beaumaris and Old Brighton . BYTLLEEId-'I'E ; Dean Matthews LESTD in charge . A good move . Have not heard much about them, but an improved showing would not surprise at all . Their ladder position last

year did not do justice to their endeavour . Early season form will be the guide to their chances . CAULFIELD GRAMMAR . Back in the Section after a few years in the wilderness . Impressed in their practice matches have worked hard with the school to use it as a recruiting ground, have some good players coming through from the Under 19's and will be certainly thereabouts . You have to respect any side coached by Dean Anderson . COLLEGIANS. Good to see the club give Tim Hart another year at the helm . They are in a rebuilding phase and showing faith in the Coach is a good start . Conflicting stories about practice match form but a good victory over Mentonians should give them plenty of confidence going into Round 1 . GLEN EIRA. Not a happy preseason for the Sainters with no ground to train on, and no certainty of when they will get it back . The loss of Hasell to Black Rock has hurt too with a couple going with him . Any side coached by Paul Beddoe wiil certainly be competitive but with the disruptions one thinks they may struggle .

HAMPTON ROVERS . Certainly have recruited the coaching panel of the section with the Goss Brothers and David "Sammy" Holt all having input . Have not lost too many, the return from OM'S of Anthony Browne will be a boost as will the signing of Brudar from Haileybury. I'm tipping they will be thereabouts again, will be very young but the experience of Anderson, Artz, Fletcher, and Sc arlett helps them . Finals a certainty . PRAHRAN . Excellent practice match form with a i point loss their worst showing . Were certainly the form side of the comp at the end of last season, and if they can keep the momentum going will be a dangerous commodity . Have lost a few but gained a few and Tony Free will be a lot wiser in his

_(,„ , { Year at the helm . Keep safe . OLD ESS'1,71 330H• Chris Bye takes over after succcssful premiership stint at Therry . seen Chris in action I respect his greatly and will be expecting a ,r,,-,ird showing from them . Will still be ;~aresi~~from their GF performance and ma y iake some watching . A good win over utonians certainly lets them know they are p LO the standard . OLD r~TrNTOHIANS• Will certainly be out to themselves after a pretty dismal ,n Sven Sauailcl is at the helm again, and 1,1urn of a couple of Legends in Ada m ;; c_, iuau, and Drew Solley wiil certainly help a-ise, and the young kids blooded in B i1,i year will be certainly better for the "Nprience . Chooka is quietly confident bout the chances . ST BELyES-IiRE2d°l'ONE TIGERS . Russel Barnes takes the helm at a club that has promised plenty and delivered little in the last 3 years . The loss of Tony Macgeorge (coaching Mentone AFC) will hurt, believe a couple have gone with him too, and Sam Hecker is another loss . Timmy Beazley is pulling them on again and that with the coaching skills of Barnesy still gives them strong claims. I'm not going to stick my neck out and pick the Final 4 but it will come from the following 5 in no set order ; Hampton Rovers, Ajax, Prahran, Old Mentonians, Caulfield Grammar. Let's see how close I get . PREVIEW Hardest week of the year to tip with any confidence and some interesting games too but here goes ; Glen Eira travel to Harry Trott and with an interrupted pre season under their belt I feel they may be a bit under done so am tipping the Purple and Golds to start their season on a winning note but warn them to not underestimate the Sainters . Old Essendon welcome Ajax to the newly named Teac Park, and this promises to be an evenly fought contest . The OE'S are strong at home while away from Albert Park the Jackas can be a bit erratic, so I don't really know . Based on last year's form AJAX are the best side left in the section so I'm tipping them to win .

B een play host to the Tigers in what promises to be another hard fought contest where no quarter will be given by either side . Hard to gauge the strengths of either side as yet so I am going to take the easy way out and go with the home side . The combine to win but only just. Old

Mentonians welcome back old rivals Hampton Rovers to the picturesque playing fields at Keysborough . Again it promises an enthralling encounter. Both have a good blend of youth and experience on their side, which promises plenty it all boils down to who is on their game more. Again early season home ground advantage means heaps in the early part of the season so perhaps against my better judgement I'm going for the Tonners .

Match of the round this one the newly promoted Caulfield Grammar unfurling their hard earned flag welcome the all conquering Two Blues . Tough test for the newly promoted boys from the Grammar and their form will certainly let us know just exactly where they are at and what their season promises . I'm going to contradict myself here and go against the norm and tip the visitors because of their experience, but a reversal would not surprise . Press Correspondents This column belongs to you the club's as much as me, and I certainly can't write it without your input . Can you all send me a brief summary of your game including match highlights leading goalkickers and better players and any Social Events you may want published by 8pm each Sunday Night . Repeat 8pm Sunday Nights . The numbers are 9-553 1561 home and fax, the mobile is 0412 213 541 or email me at braincoC& optusnet .com .aaa Good luck and please send me your reports .

D1 SECTION by Barry Hickey

CYAN PRESS

Farewell and best wishes in C Section to Caulfield Grammarians and Old Essendon, who gave us some great finals action last year . Welcome to Uni.Blacks & Yarra Valley promoved from D2, and to Ivanhoe Assumption & Old Geelong arriving from C . The Dl competition again looks as tight as the proverbial piscatorial alimentary sphincter, so scoring the 11 or 12 wins to win a finals berth will not be easy. I wish success to all the Clubs, in what promises to be a splendid footy season . St Leos Emmaus v Aquinas Both the Two Blues and the Bloods have lost a few, gained a few from last year, but expect an overall performance improvement through the maturation of their younger players . With each Club striving to improve their 'away' game productivity, today will be an acid test for Aquinas . David Miller & Laurie Aghan continue at their respective helms, and this game will provide some clues as to the prospects for the rest of the Section . I expect the Two Blues to win a good game by a couple of goals, mainly because of the Bennettswood factor . Monash Blues v Old Geelong Headers tells me that a few weeks back, the Blues, with no McGee, Furnell, Caldwell, or Morrison, were definitely drowning dahlias. Since looking at the fresh intake of students though, the Blues have moved away from the mournful purple end of the spectrum, and now view their prospects in a much rosier light . Simon Perry of OGGs on the other hand, wanted time for reflection before committing himself, but whatever he saw in that mirror, he elected not to share with us, so methinks he must have something up his sleeve, the canny chap . Doc Rogers remains as chief agitator at the

Blues, while OGGs have a new coach in Jon I'll have Edgar. to go for the home side by 3 goals or so . B anyule v Yarra Valle y Greg 31Thitcroft has had the Bears beavering away since last November, so that, while they will be substantially the same as last year personnel-wise, he is banking on their early season fitness to get them into 2001 finals action . Tim Killworth will have a typical Yarra Valley team on the field again, with plenty of pace, skill, and youthful enthusiasm . Today's encounter will favou r the Bears who play Warringal so well, and their edge in preparation should give them a 4 or 5 goal margin . Ivanhoe Assumption v Old Camberwe ll Both clubs have new coaches this season : Brad Hall, comes via Assumption College, Melbourne and elsewhere, for the home side : while Jarrod O'Neill will be using his Box Hill background to lift the Wells . I-A will be relying on home grown talent to produce the goods, which is a similar story to that of the Wells, who have retained last year's list, with a couple of useful former players returning. The Wells were a good outfit in 2000, whose performance mystified both myself, and their own connexions . As a Club they are in the wonderful position of being able to field an U17 team as well as an U 19s this year, which speaks heaps for their longterm future . The Wells' pre-season form has been very good and on the strength of that I'll tip them to take the points by 2 or 3 goals . University Blacks v Old Carey Blacks have, naturally, retained premiership coach, Kane Bowden, an d are

looking forward to a big lift in performance ~,rith the addition of experienced footballers such as matt Armstrong from Frankston, from NOBs . In addition ix:. Dave Wilkinson big things are expected from rover, Ron Cunningham, Tom Chatfield in the ruck, and young former Old plus Nat Roberts Carey legend, Andrew Costello. The panther's have suffered the customary depredation of their junior ranks by A section pirates, but under new coach, Chris Hickey, with returning players in Chad Esler, Andrew Jackson, Ash Ross, added to Danny Walsh, & Chris Battle, outstanding youngsters such as Richard pppy, Andrew Kent, Damien Shutie, Travis Bull , & Peter Unkles, look a much

more settled unit than they were in an injury riddled 2000 . By all reports, Blacks are a little further ahead in their preparation than Old Carey, and could be a few points ahead at the siren after a terrific game . Reserves winners should be : St Leo's, Monash Blues, Banyule, Ivanhoe Assumption, & Old Carey. Correspondents : the contacts are: 9818 1425 Ph + Fax; bfhickey(dtelstrm eas v naail .coan .au . Deadline is 12 :OONoon Mondays, with sometime Sunday preferred .

LOVE LOCKS

LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AGO - 1996

Monash Gryphons .

Old Haileybury, 1995 'B' section Premiers, returned to 'A ' section under astute coach Neville Taylor, keen to vaporise the memories of their last dismal appearance in A' section. They will be joined by 'B' section runners up 1995, Mazenod who joined the VAFA in 1989 and have always looked as if they were headed for 'A' section . . 'A' section premiers Old Xaverians opened their 1996 season under new coach Simon Meehan against Old Melburnians under their new coach Sean Ralphsmith. The first quarter was close, but from then on O .Ms were always dominant, winning 15.13 (103) to 11 .10 (76) . Best players were A . Thompson, Hewitt, Eabry, Susa (OM) and Blood, Richardson, McClelland, Mollard. 'A' section scribe Don Blackwood was prompted to say, would the Old Xaverians turn out to be a one premiership wonder like the OMs proved to be after their 1994 W. St Kevin's O .B ., celebrated their 50th year in the VAFA with a 40 point win against Old Mentonians who had come down from 'B' . Coach Tim Hart was pleased with the team's all round strength. It was not much of a day for Old Mentonians 1995 B+F winner Tony Bournan to remember his big day, 150 games . Tony as always gave all and was among his team's best . Ivanhoe hosted a pre-match luncheon to honor the remarkable service of Harry Thomas, a stalwart of the club for 51 years - player, committeeman, and President in the 1969 premiership year. Closest match for the round was in 'B' section where Old Brighton were held scoreless in the final term by North Old Boys whose inaccuracy 3 .5 lost then the game by two points, 8 .11 (89) to 7.15 (57). Best were Pryor, Lennox, Rickarby (Old B'ton) and Collison, Curran, Abrahams (NOB) .

Old Geelong and the VAFA mourned the passing of Nugget Stephens, a life member of the club and a life member of the VAFA . From 1955, Nuggett served Old Geelong in every position, from unsung and mundane jobs through to President . He was always there - a popular friend, advisor, assistant and helper - and always a wonderful diplomat for his club and the VAFA ever conscious of the need to maintain standards, and of the need to try your utmost but always to remember its a game. He was a wonderful worker on Interstate trips any job was well done with a minimum of fuss . 10 YEARS AGO - 1991 New teams welcomed were Boronia Park, St Pats Mentone, Albanvale, Chirnside Park, St Johns OC, 20

premiership coach with Ormond, Mike McArthur-Allen, joined the Administration as Executive Officer. Peter Sherwin, well respected Old Scotch star and representative player on many occasions had been appointed coach of his old club . Former Collingwood and Fitzroy winger Leigh Carlson had joined Collegians as coach replacing long time coach Bruce Ferguson who had taken over at Parkside while Ormond had appointed former premiership player Michael McCarthy. An elite section had been introduced in the Under-19 section, with the balance of the teams divided into north and south sections . University Blues noted with regret the death in January of long serving time keeper Graeme Coleman who joined Blues from Caulfield Grammarians and to end of season 1990 had time kept about 800 games . VAFAUA office bearers were Andrew Belcher, President Peter Keogh, Secretary: Stephen Hopper, Treasurer: Richard Simon, Social Secretary: VAFA Member Kevin Segota. AJAX won the Vic Health pre-season Under 19 Lightening Premiership . The Executive had decided to honour the memory of late George McTaggart, widely known as father of VAFA Under 19 football and the magazine 'the Amateur Footballer", by leather binding a collection of all "Amateur Footballer" magazines and calling them 'The George McTaggart Collection", and displaying them in a prominent position in the Boardroom . 15 YEARS AGO - 1986 President John Dillon welcomed five new clubs, St Andrews, St Leonards OC and Whitefriars to F section, and also to Eltham and GTV-9 to compete in G section . Mark Hannebery had returned to coach North Old Boys. 'A' section scribe Ross Booth picked Collegians new player Rick Schober to have a big season .

Young Ormond star Simon Eishold had won a place on Melbourne's list. A' section umpires to open the season were Ron Lippold, Peter Wiseman, Shane Urwin, Steve McCarthy, Colin King, Ken Coughlin, Brian Goodman, John Horwood, Brian Hayward, Dick Tracey.

There had been so much trouble at 1980 finals series with owners bringing their dogs along for a run (including Greg Fisher of Ormond with his Alsation) that the Treasurer suggested to the Executive that owners be charged $1 .00 to bring their dogs into Elsternwick Park. Still , it's family footba ll, and what's a family without a Great Dane, or a St Bernard, or a Do berman Pincer to play with the children! 'there was a sensati on to start the season when on the Friday night prior to the first game, an investiga tion which had taken place over several weeks, culminated in U . Blues being relegated from 'A' section to 'B' sec tion for season 1981, due to an irregularity in circumst ances concerning a permit app lication for a prominent U. Blues player. AJAX was promoted to 'A' section. 25 YEARS AGO - 1976 Alf Keam, a man of many talents was the Amateur Footba ller's 'A' section tipster for 1976, a new feature with other confident characters . Blacks, NOB "always trained to the minute" against Monash Blues, Coburg and Reservoir Old Boys "a thriller" - lean to NOB's and Ormond, eager for a first up win for new coach I an Cameron to defeat De La Safe "minus Peter Mu rnane". You might say "Alfie needed the run" - for the record,

Blues annihilated OT. Gus did the right thing with a 31 point win, NOB (L. Murray 6 gls) too good for Blues (best player R. Booth), Coburg 110 points over NOB and poor 'Cammie', De La swamped Ormond by 45 points, Only two out of five, Alf. A "sour note" to start the season - a record of 14 players reported for an opening round. 30 YEARS AGO - 197 1 Lou Zachariah, a devoted Amatuer Footballer man for many years, and a particular enthusiast for interstate and AAFC games succeeded Ernest F . Atkins as President, who together with two former secretaries, Jack McCann and Geoff Moore, was appointed "Patron" of the Association. Marcellin and North Brunswick joined the Association (Peter French, VAFA General Manager for 1983 to 1989, played on the wing in Marcellin's first game and kicked one goal - NR) . Well known names among new coaches were Roger Head (Old Halleyburians), Kevin McLean (Old Ivanhoe), Paddy Walsh (St Kevin's) and John Bennetti (Ivanhoe). 1970 'A' premiers, Caulfield Grammarians, trailed Collegians by 2 goals at 3/4 time but put on 9 .7 to 0.4 to win easily . Best for the victors were Atchison (5), Clark and Lester and Crow, Opie, Roach (5) for Collegians. After settling a club record by winning three successive best and fairest awards Mick Quinlan deserved the honour of appointment as captain of Old Paradians . 35 YEARS AGO - 1966 For the second time in four years the Association has been forced to vacate its central ground, the latest blow being the loss of the St Kilda Cricket Ground . The Association had used Olympic Park for five years after the 1956 Olympic Games but the introduction of a dog racing track decreased the size of the ground and it became too small for Australian Rules . The following clubs did not reappear in 1966 : RAAF, Postal Institute, BellHeld, Cassle (this was a club of a Greek brotherhood and whose equivalent in South Australia were Al Premiers in the SAAFL in 1985), Monash Whites and Kooyong . 40 YEARS AGO - 196 1 Ian Cleland (in the 70's and 80's and 90's an "authority" on ABC on lawn bowls, trotting and football and any thing else he knows a bit about) was appointed VAFA umpires advisor. Rumour has it that Ian got re-appointed each year because he sang so well at the Association's Annual Dinner - those smashing top 40's numbers, "A Man Called Peter", and "The Place Where I Worship". He usually told a couple ofjokes of unusual quality before he sang. Other notable events were that Mr Geoff Moore of Collegians AFC was awarded Life Membership, and Old Geelong Grammarians, despite after finishing last in 'B' section, turned to former coach and "star" Noel Rundle to revitalise them in 'C' section as well as be club president! (A "star" hey Noel - BC) .

111 SECTION CLUB by Norm Nugen t

The sixteenth season of Club XVIII football in its present form commences today with each of the twenty sides confident they will be successful . Again this season there are several changes to the competing clubs . Unlike the 2000 situation there are no scheduled byes as twenty clubs are fielding teams in the two sections.

SECTION 1 . Therry Penola replace Marcellin and Brunswick have moved from D4 so that the bye has been eliminated . Old Scotch are always competitive and with the experience gained last season by many young players they will again prove worthy opposition . Their visitors, St Kevins, played well at times last season, although they lacked the consistency of the top four sides . At Camberwell lean towards Old Scotch to open with a win . Newcomers Brunswick are drawn to play Mazenod at Fleming Park . Brunswick are a long standing VAFA member, who first joined in 1925 . Included in their membership has been participation in 'A' section . How will they fare in 2001 remains to be seen . Mazenod, who did not enjoy much success last season, have been training well and are confident of a lot more success . I suspect today that their greater fitness will lead to Ma2enod's first win in 2001 . Two of last year's finalists, Prahran and Old Xaverians meet at Gardiner Park . For many seasons, each Old Xaverian team has been the measuring stick of its section . Will anything change in 2001? Overall match preparation and fitness will enable Old Xaverians to defeat Prahran today. Last year's preliminary finalists De La Salle an d Old Melburnians meet at Darling Park. A new look De La Salle led by Mark Williamson will be confident of victory as Old Melburnians off field happenings may have distracted the players . At home I select De La Salle to win narrowly . Last season's runners up in season 2 Therry Penola will be at home to Old Brighton, who disappointed in 2000, despite their club

enjoying a successful season . It has always bee n difficult for visitors to achieve success at Oak Park and today I forecast victory to Therry Penola. SECTION 2

Of the twelve sides who played in this section in 2000 only six remain . They are joined by four newcomers, two of whom will be making their Club XVIII debut. Old Essendon Grammarians journey to Bulleen to play Marcellin . Old Essendon played half a season in the section In 1996 and if I remember correctly, Marcellin were their last opposition . With the benefit of home ground advantage and an A section preparation by some of their players I predict victory to Marcellin . Old Trinity play-Monash Blues at Bulleen . As University sides are often slow to start, I suspect that last year's finalist may be short of match practice and so I favour Old Trinity to open with a win. From reports, Whitefriars may be short of players and if this March rumour is correct, last season's third placed side, Old Ivanhoe should score a comfortable first victory . The two new sides, University Blacks an d St Leos meet on the Brens Oval, which will be new territory to both. Even though University sides traditionally begin slowly, there would appear little between the virtual third eighteens of two D1 clubs . I therefore select University Blacks who are the more familiar with Royal Park conditions . News has filtered through that Collegians could be short of players . If this is true what about Old Geelong, who only won twice in 2000?? This game could be a close contest of the wide expanses of Como Park . With no great confidence I select Collegians . Please Press Correspondents, contact me by noon on Monday with details of your club . Please telephone 9467 2857 or fax 9467 2865 so that your players gain their deserved recognition.

COACHES' CLIPBOARD AFCA/VAFA

A.RC .A

V.A .F.A .

"Your Coaches' Association"

ROLE OF THE (;速At;速 速 By Anne Stephens Level 2 Jumps and Multi-Evens Coach, Australian Track and Field Coaches Associatio n 1~9ng goes that 'every coach will coach many l leics in their career, but each of those athletes only one career' . This, it is thought , cnrnhasises to coaches the responsibility they have to their athletes . But I believe this quote does not go far enough . We must develop an understanding of coaching on a deeper, more philosophical level . Every athlete who comes to us brings with them a dream - for some it is to be state champion, for others it is to be world champion . Each of these dreams are precious . When we accept an athlete's dream as a realistic goal, then we are placing ourselves in a position of trust - we become the 'keeper of faith' . Between the athlete and the coach there now becomes a 'bond of belief . The athletes believe you have the ability to take them to the level they wish to achieve, and the coach believes in the athlete's ability to achieve that level . Thus is born the coach/athlete relationship - a delicate balance of trust, faith and belief in each other. FACILITATOR OF LEARNING I hesitate to use the word teacher because I fuid the term restrictive and not conducive to the level of joint communication required between an athlete and a coach . The coach has technical knowledge and a picture/model of what they want the athlete to achieve . The athlete must develop a 'feeling or kinaesthetic awareness of what the movement patterns feel like, to be able to consistently reproduce the desired patterns.

2 . how to get there (the plan ) 3 . what it feels like (the performance )

Good coach/athlete communication must be interactive . The athlete must be encouraged to talk to the coach about how a movement feels to give the coach the 'whole picture' . Conversely for the athlete to have the 'whole picture' they must understand the picture/model and the technical requirements the coach feels appropriate for them . So the desired outcome of coach/athlete communication, over a period of time, must be that the athlete and coach have the same 'whole picture' of 1 . where they are going (the goal)

Coaching is the most challenging, most rewarding, most fulfilling job I have ever done . I am continually developing my communication skills and my network of supporters. I also take every opportunity to update and expand my knowledge . I owe that to myself and to my athletes . 'When you stop learning, you stop growing and you become less than you can be' . Re-printed from Sports Coach Summer 1998

This provides a solid performance base for the athlete . They will go into competition knowing they are physically well prepared, they will have confidence in their technique, and they will know that in the stands is someone who believes in them, as they believe in themselves . NETWORK SUPPORT There are thousands of roles a coach can play some of these roles you will take on, some you are not qualified for and will need help with . As the 'keeper of faith' it is important that you select carefully as those you trust to help you and your athlete realise their dream . I cannot stress how important it is that the healers and others experts that you choose to help your athletes are 'like minded' people, who understand the needs of the athletes and are 'like minded' people, who understand the needs of the athlete and are prepared to 'go the extra mile' for them . Please do not underestimate the value of other coaches . I often use the analogy that coaching athletes is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together . Sometimes you get stuck because you have been staring for too long . A fresh pair of eyes can often see what we are blinded to . Other coaches are not going to object to you asking their advice, most will indeed be flattered . It is always good to get another viewpoint - it doesn't mean you have to agree with it, or even act upon it, but other coaches can be a useful and stimulating coaching resource. BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE

D2 SECTION by Elvion Bowe n

KNITWEAR Welcome one and all to what promises to be another exciting season of D2 Amateur Football! The extended lay-off over summe r has provided clubs with possibly their longest pre-season ever, and hopefully a high standard of football will ensue in this opening round . Best of luck to all players and clubs if the 2001 season is as close as the previous one, then we are set for a beauty ! Mentone Amateurs has scored a major coup in the form of new playing coach Tony Macgeorge. Formally of St Bedes Mentone and Sandringham, he should prove a handful for opposition teams either around the centre, or up forward where his practice match form has been ominous . A number of players have followed him to Southern Road, with perhaps four likely to line-up this week in the seniors . The Under 19's are also looking strong, which should assist the Vulture's depth, and with no significant departures they will be eyeing a fmals berth . Parkside was a little slow off the mark last season but finished in a flurry to be a genuine threat come season's end . Laurie Zarafa wi ll again take the reins and will no doubt be keen to ensure the Red Devils are a force away from Pitcher Park . They should have enough class and balance to again be contender, however the trip to Mentone may prove a tough one first up . Round 1 will be a momentous occasion for Powerhouse when they unfurl their 2000 premiership flag down by the Lake . They have suffered a fairly high turnover of players following last year's success, the most notable of which include big Doc and a 100 goal forward in Searle . Their ability to cover such losses will largely determine their year, though doubtless they will be keen to utilise the flag as a springboard to further success . The addition of Anthony Palmer (ex-North Melb) and Damien Murrihy (North Ballarat) to their ranks could well be the answer . They lock horns with old rivals Peninsula, where Chris Gawne has ascended to the

senior coaching position . He has been joined b y

Greg Nelson and Darren Fenech to form what the Pirates hope will be a winning formula . They will be searching for a greater level of consistency following a fairly hot and cold 2000 . Peninsula has secured some promising youngsters and will do their utmost to ruin the Piranha's day. Kew has enjoyed good numbers on the track and has re-appointed Serge D' Angelo, with Greg Crimmins an d Leigh Bradley his righthand men . They've had solid hit-outs against Banyule, Salesian and West Brunswick in the lead-up and have recruited from as far afield as Warragul and Tasmania . After a disastrous start last season the K's rallied hard to be extremely tough opposition by season's end, and will be looking to take that up another notch when they host West Brunswick this week . The Westies have appointed '98 reserves premiership coach Paul Cook to the top job, who faces the immediate challenge of covering a few departures from the Magpie nest . These include Steve Benjamin (cricket o/s), Dave Edwards ( o/s) and Damien Koonan. Their practice match against Kew was very competitive, and the result may depend on the success of the West's recruiting drive, which may take a little time to bear fruit. The K's may just be gelling a little more at this point . La Trobe joins D2 section following a disappointing 2000, and are pitted against Oakleigh, who also rejoin us after suffering a similar fate . Andrew Sutherland will again call the shots with the knowledge that the Trober's have lost a few, including former captain and club stalwart Gerard Robinson, who has moved to Echuca for work . Fortunately, the University's colleges have provided both players and enthusiasm, and the massive Main Oval out at Bundoora

tiho.dld again be a daunting prospect for opposition teams . Qalcleigh will be hoping to bounce back after such a tough season, but they are a proud club that will no doubt be more than competitive this season following some significant changes . New coach Russell Brnerton is a former South Melbourne and pakleigh player with a wealth of coaching ~,xperience, and an able assistant in former Springvale and Noble Park player Adam Schultz . The Krushers have regained the T,ulk their '99 premiership side, and they'll be !wen to open their account early after the relative famine of last year . Other recruits to look for include former De La player Mark McHenry and 7ft giant Alex Mc Kenzie . Salesian has enjoyed some solid practice matches in the pre-season, with opponents including Kew and Peninsula . Their playing stocks appear to be largely unchanged, although last year's D2 best & fairest winner was noticeably absent . Big Andy may prove a tough loss to cover should he be missing from the Chaddy line-up this year . They will rely heavily once again on the experience of

Bobetic, Sutherland and Canavan and should have a cracker first up against Williamstown CYMS . Willi has Darren 'Dumbo' Williams on the clipboard once again and he has been buoyed by 'better than ever' numbers according to Pres . Peter Sadler. They have faced Ivanhoe, Old Westbourne and Coburg (Essendon District) in the lead-up and are anxiously waiting on the signing of a few big recruits, including Leigh Monkhorst (brother of youknow-who), who has played previously with Woori Yaliock . Press correspondent s Deadlines remain tight, so reports to be emailed, faxed or phoned by Sunday night please . Remember, the column is only as interesting/ informative as the info you provide, so please offer some insight, bearing in mind the VAFA already give me the best players and goalkickers . UMPIRES CORNER by Dianne Whiteley homf S_. .,n n Dinner out of oven . . . . .VB from fridge . . . . . . . .TV on . . . . .favourite chair . . . . . . relax . . . . . . .training over for another night . Only about 40 more sessions to go until. . . . . . . . .Finals Fever Hits Melbourne!!! ! The 2001 season hits off today . The whites are ironed, the shoes shined and the whistles are clean . . . . .ready for another year fiIled with football highs and lows . We wish every umpire, team, official and their families the best for Season 2001 and hope all goals pursued will be fulfilled . WELCOME The VAFAUA welcomes all new members to the Association . We have at least 15 new members . Three new members to keep an eye on are Jason AYcNeice (ex VFL Squad), James Watson (ex VFL Squad) and Mark Fraser (ex AFL player) . I think they will be giving our current 'A' Grade Umpires a 'run for their money!' REVIEW Year 2000 - what an excellent year . . . . . .for some anyway! Congratulations to all teams that won Grand Finals and to the umpires who officiated in Grand Finals .

We congratulate the staff of the VAFA for their professionalism which allowed for the smooth running of the Association . Thankyou to the past Executive Committee for their work and commitment throughout 2000 and to all umpiring members for a job well done . . . . .including the coaching staff . CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations goes to Leon Quinn (F), Dirk Kramer ( F), Rowan Dever ( B) an d Adam Conquest (B) for their well deserved promotion to the VFL Squad . 240 1 APPOINTMENTS

Congratulations to Graham Hunichen (ex AFL boundary umpire) for his appointment as Fitness Advisor and Jamie Kvins for his appointment as Skills Advisor . Congratulations also to : Michael Sneddon (Re-appointed Coach), Justin Toohey (Re-appointed Assistant Coach), Geoff Ridd (Re-appointed Advisor), Bob Mutton (Reappointed B .U . Coach), Shane Herbert (Reappointed Goal Umpires Coach), Mark Gibson (President), Peter Simpson (Vice President), Mark Jenkins (Junior Vice President), Richard Eastwood (Secretary), Paul Lamble / Paul Jones (Treasurer), & All the other Executive Members an

xx~zZ.EVJELL End of Season 2000 saw

some of our fellow umpires retire. We would like to thank them all for their dedication and commitment to the Association and hope every path they take in the future is fruitful . A SPECIAi, THANKYOU is owed to John Kelly (13 years / 273 games), Craig O'Donohue (moved to W.A - 9 years / 200 games), Graeme Thwaites (15 years / 310 games) an d Michael Lentini (moved to Bendigo) for their magnificent contribution to the Association . RULES Each ground must have two 45 metre arcs drawn on it for every match played. When a full back is kicking the ball back into play after a behind a free kick will be paid against a club if its runner or any other on-field official is positioned within the 45 metre area . This free is to be taken by a player of the opposition team from any point on the 45 metre arc in that half of the ground . If the team is slow in choosing player and point where the kick is taken the umpire will quickly do both .

This is a disincentive for clubs to "add to the numbers" . Umpires will obviously show discretion if a trainer is attending a distressed player . Under the VAFA's audible obscenity rule a player can be sent off, not be reported but be replaced the only time in Amateur football that this condition exists . If this is the case the field umpire will hold in the air a yellow card to indicate to all that this is the case . This is to avoid the confusion that often exists when players are ordered off . No yell ow card - the player has been reported and cannot be replaced until 15 minutes actual playing time has elapsed. More on new rules as the season unfolds . SPONSORS VAFAUA would like to thank the following sponsors for their continuing support towards the Association - Sportscover, Schweppes, Personal Mortgage Managers . UNIFORMS Today, most of the field and boundary umpires will feel 'brand new!' in their new uniforms . The uniforms are finally completed and ready for wear and tear. The field umpires have been allocated a coloured number on the back of their shirts fo r

~asier identification . lease refer i to list of umpires on our p~~e . . . .game, to Mark Gibson, Richard

p3 tnood, Phil Stevens and Tony O'Callaghan for tl eir tremendous work and effort . Thanks also to Sportecover and Schweppes for sponsoring the umpires uniforms . ~~'iiat are your thoughts on the new uniforms? please email us with any opinions you may have . UMPIRES CORNER The UC will be scribed by Anthony Simpson (Simo) and Dianne Whiteley (Di) this year . The VAFAUA would like to THANK Craig and Graeme

(D THE Presidents', Sec retaries' and Members, 30th season launch at Crown Casino was a hit last ,째eek. The new venue was ideal for before-and-after function entertainment. Highlights: -Business and AFL power-weight John Elliott, an old Carey boy, appeared to have no official role yet he turned up and enjoyed himself as one of the crew . 1 i(. was swamped during the breaks by fans and foes u-V!ng to get a word in and Big Jack supported the 5 m o1:eFrce policy during the function . .Nancy McTaggart joined her late husband George as a Life Member and she stole the show with this during her acceptance speech: -Ibis is the proudest moment of my life" . Nancy joins Norma Fullerton, who was at the launch, as the only women to be life members (more on this next issue).

-Life Membership also to retiring president Andrew Langford-Jones who described the acknowledgment as : " . . .special and wonderful" . ALJ, a former Haileybury and VAFA coach, three times went to court on VAFA matters during his reign and he handled the delicate issues professionally . His connection with Amateur Football spans four decades. -The Ansett Australia Media Persona lity of the Year was rightly given to The Age's Paul Daffey. His feature article at the start of last season headlined For The Love of the Game had a bit to do with this column firing up . Based on Paul's remark, that "I am welcomed by all officials" he must be a unique journalist - most scribes have a few places that are chilly even during the hot pre-season! -The famous four : Michael Blood, John Bowen, Andrew Dillon and Dan Richardson were given the Personality (sic) of the Year Award . They are the only Old Xavs to have played in all six of their consecutive A Section flags . Records are sketchy on whether that is a first (Uni Blacks did the same 50 years ago) but they are definitely the first to share the this award which was struck at the inaugural dinner and has been won only by individuals until now . Good touch to see each given a Cyan Press framed picture of the four celebrating on Headquarters moments after their latest triumph . -Next edition will have a wrap of the Merit Award winners an d Australian Sport Medal winners acknowledge at the night. -Essendon CEO Peter Jackson gave a wonderful THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2001

guest speech and it wasn't only about the issues of income generation for the AFL's dominant club . Peter recalled his day as a victim at the VAFA tribunal in the 1970s when he ended up being reprimanded for his testimony even though he explained to the umpire at the time of the report he wasn't involved! Noel Rundle dined out on this line. -New president Richard Evans noted that apart from the 5000 players involved in our competition there are another 2000 volunteers required each ,week. Appropriate recognition in this The Year of the Volunteer. Mr Evans quoted the American Medical Journal (September 2000) that people involved in team sports had a 62 per cent less chance of being involved in crime or drug abuse and he asked : "Why can't they (the latest national drug campaign) depict the positive aspects of getting involved and have contact numbers for Football Victoria at the end of commercials ?

"Are we not ideally placed to have a positive influence on men and women in this state?" Spot on . -Bombshell of the evening came from Old Scotch that has replaced its senior coach on the eve of the season . This is a legitimate case . The incumbent Brendan Mason, a police training officer, indicated during his re-appointment that he might be swamped by work so assistant coach and club pin-up Andrew Smith has stepped up to the plate . Andrew played 299 games with one of Australia's most famous clubs before retiring at the end of the century . Will the selection panel convince Andrew to play one last time or will the coach have the final say? Brendan will continue in a coaching role. 0 Still at the Cardinals and one of its administrators and VAFA executive John Bell has little time away from organising sports clubs . John works for the MCC in its cricket program and three weeks ago at the VCA Premier Final at the Albert Ground he was did an excellent job looking after the player and guest facilities . JB - you've done it again ! Also spotted at the Premier Final was VAFA C-D coach George Voyage. "I've captained the StKilda Fourths for two seasons," explained George . The Saints won the title in a thriller. got a point? beitzelbCalphalink .com .au zz

The Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) returns to the field this week for Round 1 of competition at Elsternwick Park ( Sunday April 29) . This season will see 3 Divisions made up of relative estimates of abilities . Division 1 is for higher functioning players, Division 2 for teams with a general mix of both higher and lower functioning players and Division 3 that will cater for lower functioning teams .

It is the vision of the FIDA Executive for all clubs who field teams in Division 1 to also field a team in Division 3 to assist with player overflow. Another major change will be that Division 1 will be the only teams to play for both points and percentage, Division 2 will compete for points only (percentage only being used to determine ladder positions), and Divisions 3 will not play for points at all, but mainly the opportunity to compete against one another . Round 1 Preview Hawthorn host South Yarra 1 with both teams hell bent on improving on last year's win loss ratios . The Hawks with the extra experience should finish in front. The other match at 10am sees Ringwood Blues challenge iVloonee Vally (previously Keilor) . Neither team were consistent enough to challenge the ladder leaders in 2000 and both will be keen to get off to a good start today - the Blues in a close one. Mambourin Tigers play Parkside who have moved from Section 1 to 2 due to a lack of player numbers . Given Parkside's ability from previous years the match should be a ripper, the Division 2 Premiers from 2000 the Tigers favoured in the finish .

Geelong 2 versus South Yarra 2 is an unknown with South Yarra producing their first Division 3 team in its short history . The young Cats will be pleased to come up against some opposition of similar ilk and for this reason their greater experience should hold them in good stead . Ballarat will be still smarting from being runners-up in 2000 and Geelong 1 despite their strong numbers and playing personnel will feel the brunt of a fired up Knights unit today. Karingal 2 and Bendigo 2 go head to head and if last year's results are any indication the Bulls should prove too strong, however the Warriors are never to be taken lightly and would not surprise should they get home today. Karingal 1 an d Broadmeadows 1 face off in what will be a beauty . The Kangas are a year older and likewise the Bulls. The Kangas have been improving week by week each year and could well be ready to challenge the big guns of Division 1 . One thing's for sure the Bulls will not have it all their own way today. The Bulls by a whisker. The final match pits Maribyrnong Bu lldogs against Colac. Expect Colac to be better performed than 2000 where they were clearly outclassed in Division 1 . The Bulldogs area surprise packet annually and on this form the Colac boys are tipped to open their account . Broadmeadows 2 and Bendigo 1 begin the season with a week's break due to byes in their respective sections .

Good luck to all teams, coaches, players and umpires today .

The return of the football season not only brings with it the normal expectations but this year it also sees the return of the dual reporting style that was so highly regarded during the Bremner/Brain era of sports reporting . What Peter Thinks : After an extra-long break, flrstly with the early finish to the season due to the Olympics, and with the late start due to Easter, we have returned! ! And what better way to start the season than with last season's D4 Grand Final Replay between South Melbourne Districts and Bentleigh. South Were too strong on that o e ccasion and I will say, admittedly withou being awar t personnel (rn of any changes to player y caveat always for games early in the season), that I will pick the Bloods again today. Another game which promises to be a hot contest is that of Richmond Central and Fitzroy Reds . The Cobras are always thereabouts while the Reds will be looking to return to D2 at the first attempt . The word is that Fitzroy have looked pretty handy in preseason, and while Richmond are usually difficult to beat at home, the Roys are it for me . EIsternwick

play host to Albert park, who gained a reprieve from relegation to D4 due to other clubs' circumstances . Elsternwick were always competitive last year, their midtable fate only confirmed in the final weeks of the season . Albert Park will want to make the most of their reprievai, but Will probably struggle today (but heed the caveat) win . . Wicks to

Hawthorn Amateurs entertain UgSOB at Rathmines Road . The Hawks will again be an influential team in this year's competition after falling short last season (when as a guest columnist, I tipped them as m y 36

"smokey") and UHSOB will b e looking to improve on last year's effort . Hawthorn's solid core of veterans along with the coaching smarts of Peter Tyson should see them win comfortably . Finally, Nionash Gryphons hit the road, Playing away to St . John's OC in a tough opening encounter . Probably Gr ythe eoughtes road trip all year, at least th e tphs g tit out of the way early . Monash have recruited Well, and have at times looked top class in their practice matches . However, letting m y head rule my heart, I'll pick the JOCs to triumph in an entertaining contest .

What Ed thinks : Bentleigh for me in the Grand Final replay . T aeytwill still be smarting from last year's hefe d, having fallen at the last hurdle . Should be a great game and one that will surely have an impact for the rest of the year . Central welcoming the Reds in another interesting encounter . Richmond farewelled a star or two at the end of last season but did see the emergance of some new stars late in the year . The "Ammo" telegraph is working overtime on the Reds, great numbers at training, fantastic recruits and grea t facilities, already Pencilled in by many as being the team to beat . Might get on the band wagon early, Reds to win . Eisternwick host Albert Park, a side granted a Pardon from demotion . Coach Murphy had his side running as well as anyone's at the start of last year before injury began to take its toll . I expect the Wicks to be right amongst this year and should start the season in fine form , Hawthorn against iTni High looks close on paper . The Hawks will be hoping their youngsters of last year can take the next step whilst Uni High will also be hoping that the

next generation step up . These sides generally split games along home ground lines so maybe the Hawks just . In the last game for preview, Monash trip to St.Johns for a tough road trip . Monash have recruited well and will look to improve on what was a disappointing season last year . St .Johns, on the other hand, will be looking to build on a promising year in 2000 . St .Johns are another side I have my eye on in 2001 and should get the season of to a good start with a win .

For what its wort h (and that wouldn't be much),- I fancy Reds, Bentleigh, St .Johns an d Elsternwick for the finals, 'Mushy' Jackson from the Reds for the league B+F and Lauletta from Hawthorn for the Goalkicking. D4 SECTION by Gavan Flowe r

Season 2001 begins seeing the introduction of new side Rupert swood into section D4 while some last minute swapping has resulted in Eley Park moving back into D4 with Albert Park returning to D3, runners-up Bentleigh and Premiers South Melbourne move into D3 . The season also has, for the first time in D4 the introduction of the bye, which will no doubt provide some valuable respite from the vigours of a hard season later in the year . Mt .Lilydale has had a solid pre season with a regular core of players attending most nights and had twenty-five players in attendance in a recent camp to Bacchus Marsh . Twelve new players have signed up and all have shown good form in recent intra-club games . David Keast remains as senior coach and is joined by ex-VFL Paul Cummerford who will take up the reigns in the twos. The side should look to improve on last season's form and could threaten for a valued finals birth . North Brunswick has had an interrupted preseason with training on three different grounds as the club grapples with local councils . Craig Fox has stayed on as senior coach but has seen the loss of a number of players from last season's side, however, a few new faces around the club have replaced these . The club would have been disappointed with last season's finish and would need significant improvement to better their finish in the upcoming season . Syndal Ta lly Ho, buoyed by their finals finish last season have picked up a large number of new players and have had in excess of fifty players attend training. Kevin Hannett has remained as senior coach and was pleased with a good win in their first practice game. Judging by the pre-season form, Syndal will be one of the teams to beat in season 2001 . Rupertswood is the new side to D4 after a successful campaign in Club 18 last year where it survived a nail-biter in the preliminary final and then took out the grade's Grand Final . Located in the hills of Sunbury, the home ground advantage will be one factor that will weigh heavily in the sides favour . If it can carry the form it had last season and also strengthen its reserves it could be one of the surprise

packets of the competition r this season: Swinburne University is anothe would have been disappointed with their fo r the 2000, season and' would be - looking to strengthen its ranks with the new influx of students for the new season . However, as with many university sides, form can fluctuate with player availabilities and the side may find it difficult to match it with some of the better quality sides as the season progresses . Werribee Amateurs have continued their building process and have significantly increased their player stocks thanks to a number of past players returning to the club and the progression of players from their under 19 side . Their results in practice matches have been encouraging and the numbers at preseason training have been consistent . The side has failed to impress in past seasons and will be dearly hoping that their building strategies pay dividends in 2001, however, experience does count for a lot in D4 and it may still be another couple of seasons before the side becomes a real force in the grade. Bulleen Cobras were solid on 2000 without being outstanding and are well poised to improve on last season's form . Numbers have been good in the pre season and whispers around D4 are that the club is quietly confident to give the front-runners a run for their money in the upcoming season. St .Mary's have had a number of retirements from the previous season thanks in part to their reserve's premiership . They have, however, been fortunate enough to have had eighteen new players attend pre-season training and most have shown they have good form in the clubs two intra-club matches. Peter Olivieri has remained as senior coach and would dearly like to improve on the clubs mediocre result from the 2000 season . It is hoped by the club a number of the reserves who played in the premiership side last season can replicate their feats in the firsts, however, the with a new mix of players it may find the going tough early in the season . Eley Park have probably experienced the worst

prcnliership hangover in the history of the VAFA n,he11 up until two weeks ago, only five players had e_,pressed interest in playing in season 2001 112 d the club was on the brink of folding . The club was therefore "demoted" to D4, after o~liltiug promotion to D3 for their 1999 flag, in order to try and save the club . Through the efforts of the committee by door knocking and mail drops; they have been able to assemble ,_,lou'511 players to continue . Time will tell as the Season progresses but it appears as though the club ~vill struggle through season 2001 until th e ; players get to know each other a little better . old Westbourne has had disappointing w,imbcrs on the track with an average of only wx, rt"= players in attendance most training 1 ;o1rts. The practice match form has, however, hen quite solid with a narrow loss to D3 side, Itichmond Centrals and a victory against a local FDFL side . Jeff Wilson has stayed on as coach, &hough he will most likely not be donning the boots to continue his club B&F from of las t season . There will be a need for much improvement of their disappointing 2000 season form if the side is to threaten the finals this season. The Eltham Turtles have appointed a new ,captain/coach at the club, Brian Doody, winner of the club's past two best and fairest awards and he has worked well in the off season retaining all but one from the 2000 finals senior side. New assistant coach Wayne Hansen who originates from the Diamond Valley league joins him. The Turtle's form in the clubs two practice matches has been good with a solid victory in one of the games . Once again the Turtles will be tough to beat at home and should be amongst the final's action again this season . Match Previews Mt Lilydale vs. Eltham O C Eltham makes the trip out to Mt.Lilydale and both teams with their good preparations would want to get the new season kick started with a victory. The Turtles new coach, Brian Doody will want to stamp his authority early as the Eltham side begins their premiership campaign, however, Mt.Lilydale will be a tough side to beat at home . With Doody continuing his B&F form the Turtles should prove too strong in this encounter to win by 15 points. North Brunswick vs. Eley Park North Brunswick may well have had an interrupted pre-season with a variety of ground changes, but this pales in comparison to the disastrous start Eley Park have experienced . a lot at stake early in the season, I think

North Brunswick will prove too strong for the undermanned Eley Park and will commence with a win by 35 points . Syndal Ta lly Ho vs. St.Mary' s

Syndal Tally Ho has had a dream preparation and is poised to take the next step in their quest for a D4 premiership . St.Mary's, however, are not to be underestimated and with a lot of new young blood in the side, the support of radio personality Ernie Sigley as club president, they could provide some stiff competition . However, Syndal have a great desire to commence their campaign with a victory and should beat St.Mary's by 19 points . Rupertswood vs . Bulleen Cobra s Bulleen Cobras is the first team to make the epic journey out to Sunbury to take on the new boys in D4 in Rupertswood . Rupertswood will be buoyed by their 2000 club 18 premiership and have a distinct home ground advantage . On the other hand, Bulleen would have been disappointed to have missed out on the finals last season and would dearly like to start their 2001 campaign with a positive and should run out victors by 28 points . Werribee Amateurs vs . Old Westbourne Werribee Amateurs will christen its newly laid turf at Soldiers Reserve against local side Old Westbourne boasting a plethora of new players and keen to start the season off on a positive . Old Westbourne on the other hand will be relying on experienced campaigners like Justin and Andrew Horsburgh and Glen Robson to lead from the front . The two sides have developed a rivalry and results are often close, however, Old Westbourne's experience will tell against the new look Werribee side and see it victorious by 18 points . Swinburne University has the bye in round 1 . TREATING THAT INJURY Last time we spoke about the first 48 hours in the freatment of an ankle or knee injury . After 48 hours let's begin the rehab . For both ankle and the knee reducing swelling, promoting healing, maintaining stability are essential features of getting the player back on track . We may use laser, or biofeedback or interferential at first, together with soft tissue massage and stretching .

I

Later proprioception or ability to balance functionally using wobble boards and a variety of practical drills is critical before returning to training . Maintaining some aerobic fitness during that time using an exercise bike even if only pedalling with one leg is also important .

SECTION 1 Welcome to the 2001 season of VAFA Unde r 19 football! This year there will be a Representative Team from all 4 sections playing against the Victorian Metropolitan Football League. I ask coaches, players and administrators of clubs to take this game very seriously ; we need your full commitment in player assessments and recommendations . Make sure the nomination forms are in by Round 3 and congratulations to the players who make the squad. Now that all those Easter eggs have been eaten and those extra kilos are gone from long hours on the track, all teams are set to fire this week in Round 1 . Congratulations to the newly promoted Beaumaris & Old Scotch, who play off against each other in the Grand Final Replay . Congratulations to the VAFA in deciding to have a Final 5! Some questions need to be asked that only the 'season' will answer . Can the Football Director maintain the same intensity now that he is looking after his burgeoning football teams and family? Can Xavs go one better or are they happy to play 'second fiddle'? Can the Blues finish off the season? Can Old B . continue with their excellent improvement from last year? Can Collegians get their paperwork right so they can play finals football? Will De La go for the 5 in the first half or just rely on their 2nd half run home? Can St . B .'s who promised so much, finally deliver? Can O .M .'s, Marcellin and Mazenod get their acts together and play more consistently ? Round 1 sees a number of great matches in the G .F. replay from Section 2 in Old Scotch at home to Beaumar3s . Alas I don't think Old S. can reverse the previous result. Beaumaris for me . O .M .'s travel to Victoria Park to meet Manni's Xavs . Unfortunately the drive back for O.M .'s won't be much fun . The Director unveils his new look Premiership team on Righetti Oval against the Uni Blue Boys in a game they should win well . St . Bernard's are at home at the College to Maaenod . St . B .'s 52

have a number of n e w recruits that will undoubtedly make an impression in Section i this year (or have I made an Assumption?) and prove too strong for the travelling Nodders . Marcellin at home will be a tough team to get over this year, but I just can't forget the outstanding form of Old B.'s . O .B .'s to win! Finally De La are at home to Co llegians with two new coaches looking for their lst win . Unsure on this one, so I'll go for the home team . Well done, Browny! SECTION 2 The action kicks off for the new season with Old Flaileybury hosting Yarra Va lley. Old Haileybury will be keen to improve on its disastrous season in section one last year, the club managing to win just one game . Yarra Valley gets another chance in section two despite finishing second last with just five wins in 2000 . Ormond has been promoted from Section (2) Blue, despite its loss in last year's preliminary final, and will be a force after a tough pre-season . Ormond take on Old Essendon, which last year dominated section 2 Red, finishing a game clear on top of the table, but was then eliminated from the finals in straight sets, eventually losing a classic preliminary final to North Old Boys by two points . Melbourne High host Old Ivanhoe in what should be an entertaining clash, the Hoes also surviving in Section 2 despite taking home the wooden spoon last year. Hampton Rovers an d Old Trinity shapes as one of the matches of the round, with both sides keen to improve on their midtable finishes in 2000 . Old Trinity was eliminated in the first semi-final by Whitefriars, who host Werribee, in what should be an entertaining clash . Werribee is a fresh face in the U 19's for season 2001 and will be keen to show that it can challenge for a place in Section 1 . The final game of the round sees Caulfield Grammarians take o n

St . Leos, both clubs having moved up from Section 2 Blue . Both sides have recruited well as they endeavour to push towards the top fl ;ghl and will be keen for a first up victory . UNI}ER 19 (2) BLUE Section Blue sees two new teams in the competition from Section 1 clubs . St . Kevin's ,, nd Xavs. St . Kevin's 2 is being coached by Steve Clarke, Premiership runner up, player n-ith power-house and Old Xavs by Nick Fay a Former player. r .ound 1 sees Monash Blues at home to St . K. 1 can.'t pick against practice match form so the Blues to win well . Oakleigh are at home to ;v,avs in what should be an interesting match . 130th dubs beat St . K . by 4 goals in practice matches, but due to Oakleigh's overall height and their big F .F ., Oaks by 2 goals . South Melbourne host Ajax in a game in which the Swans should dominate from start to finish . They will need to keep the ball in the air as .last year, but if it stays on the ground, the small running Ajax team might just get close enough to cause an upset; I think not! The Swans by 8 goals . Coach Buntine for De La has the week off, so I expect to see him down at the Glen Eira v . Mentone game . This will be a fantastic contest! Mentone have recruited well but will be tested by the Packer Boys, bolstered by the return of Mimmo,

Cassair, Clarke and the Ali's who are much stronger and hungrier. Glen Eira just! SECTION 2 RED The match of the round sees Therry Penola host 2000 Section (2) Red premiers Old Camberwell . Therry Penola boasted an impressive 11-7 win-loss record last year but still finished two games out of the finals and will be keen to atone for a season of missed opportunities . Old Paradians welcome Bulleen Templestowe, both sides coming off less than impressive seasons in 2000 . Old Paradians failed to win a game in Section 1, but should be more competitive in the lower grade, while Bulleen Templestowe could manage just five victories last year in this section. Uni Blacks, which missed the finals by just one game last year, host Ivanhoe/Fitzroy, the Blacks as usual boasting plenty of numbers at this early stage . Early victories are a must for the Uni side, before holidays and exams start to distract many players from the task. Aquinas take on Rupertswood and if last season is anything to go by it could be a long day for the home side . Rupertswood was eliminated in the first semifinal by North Old Boys last year, while Aquinas won the wooden spoon, managing just two victories for the season. Beaten grand finalists in this section in 2000, North Old Boys, have the bye first up .
