-1=v 6 The day opened with Collegians 12/4 on top in'A' and then five team, U . Blues, Old Xaverians, Old Haileybury, Old Scotch, Old Melburnians level on 9/7, trailed by De La 8/8. Four of the teams met each other, and at the end of the day OX, O.S ., O.M. Was second, third, fourth . Old Melburnians showed their best form for weeks when they were too strong for Blues, winning 11 .13 (79) to 8.7 (55). The other battle was a real "fizzer" when O .X. annihilated O.H. 19.16 (130) to 4 .6 (30) . Best were A Dillon, Petroff, Hawkins, Bowen, Brennan, Berry. The remarkably durable Phil Kingston broke the Ormond club record today when he ran out to play his 257th game .
In the final round in 'D' top team, Caulfield G were well beaten by 7th team, St Johns OC 8 .7 to 3.7. The losers still finished on top on percentage from A1lonash Blues. Top teams in B, Old Paradians, 16/ 1, held out fourth team, Old Brighton, 9.18 to 8 .11 . It was a tight last term, 1 .3 to 0 .2 . St Leos congratulated Jack Gronin on his 250th game. Drew Warne-Smith celebrated Peninsula Old Boys (ES) minor premiership with his 100th goal for the season in their unimpressive win over fifth team, Oakleigh, 7 .10 to 5.4 . The umpires held a FINALS PREPARATION SEMINAR, and were addressed by veteran AFL field umpire, John Russo, (2 grand finals and 200 games experience), and the UAFAUA's fitness advisor, Peter Young, who spoke on rood for Thought as we prepare for the FINALS . VAFAUA held their annual dinner at Carlton FC with Carlton's Football Manager and Chairman of Selectors Colin Kinnear, as guest speaker . The GOLDEN WHISTLE AWARD went to Matt McCrohan and life membership awards were awarded to Geoff "Retired" Ridd and Steve "Scoutmaster" Hopper. An emotional Mark Bushfleld won the Bob Dunstan Award for services to the UAFA Brad Nash, former Ormond premiership player and best and fairest (1987) won the Most Improved Goal Umpires Award. St Bernards, 8 .12 (60) defeated Mareellin 2.6 (18) in the ,North Club XVIII Grand Final while Old Xaverians were far too strong for Old Scotch in the final term to win the South Club XVIII Grand Final, 8.7 (55) to 5.4 (34).
10 YEARS AGO - 19 91 A reunion luncheon for past umpires was held at EP, 90 turned up, including Les Wenker, field umpire at the exhibition football match at 1956 Olympics (when the VAFA defeated the team of players who played VFL and VFA as amateurs), and former advisers, Max Barker and Kevin McKay.

Lyons a man with a big heart and ar~-~rce competitor . Over the hill at St Bernards, Kevin Mahady one of fi brothers to have played for the club reached the 200 ~ two B section flags to his credit, 1984 and 1987 . A sEat running player, Kevin was doing a fine job on the eomniii as player's member. Can anyone recall when an'A' section club did not sco, the first half, and only scored 1 .2 for the game? Well, I Blues scoreboard read 0 .0, 0.0, 1 .0, 1 .2 and the man v can tell the story in years to come "as the day I kicked ev goal for the Blues" was Mark MeCarty. The Brown and Blues kicked 19.13 to keep alive a slen chance of making the four which was a big turnarou after losing 5 straight at the start of the season .
Old Haileybury (A), 2 points behind fourth learn Ther climbed above sixth team Old Scotch when trailing b3 points at last change, they kicked 4.1 to 2 .0 to win. B were Armitage, Ray, Baxter (Old H.) and Fuller, Hu n Brown (Old Scotch) . St Bernards accurate kicking kept them in top place .h they went right away from second team Old Trinity . fl goal each at the first change, final scores were 11 .3 to 2. ~ Best were Fitzpatrick, J. Gollant, R Purcell, Mala, Wood, Comito.
In the U19 zone 1 De La Salle (Blue) kept their unbo r record when they beat second team St Bernards 17 .1 6 4.2 . Stars for the winners were Crowe, Dean, Schuling, Greeley, Lafferty, Murray . 15 YEARS AGO i

In the battle for 4th place in 'B' Parkside (5th) lost to Bernards (8th) by 2 points and Uni Blacks (4th) lost to Kilda (7th) by 14 points to draw level on top of the ladda both 2 games clear of Fawkner. Geelong almost lost their position in the 'C section four with a lucky point win over bottom team Monash University . Luscombe and the Smiths L. and E . saved the game while Wetternhall, Message and Hone dominated play for Monash. 100 games to Geoff James and Bob Douglas of SSB : Harvey Tartakover (0. At half time the scores were equal and a torrid second half seemed apparent. As the players tired on the big and hard Daley Oval, scoring opportunities all but dried up. De La Salle kicked the only goal of the third quarter and with five scaring shots to three by St Kevins, De La Salle led at the last change by seven points . Pau1 Baker, who gave De La Salle a sure avenue to goal, kicked the only major in the final quarter (the only De La Salle score for the quarter). As St Kevins attacked in desperate attempts to wrest the lead, the De La Salle defence stood firm as experience and strong marking held St Kerins out . A solitary minor score was all St Kevins could add to their total as De La Salle recorded a meritorious victory by twelve points. An elated De La Salle Coach, Mark Williamson, said the victory was earned by a real team effort . No great surp ' ses last week with all results as expected. The last two home-and-away games will see the four final's coaches fine tuning their line-ups and freshening up their charges . For Williamstown and Parkside the battle for the all-important second spot continues, and both clubs looking for a fairly 'easy' four points this week ahead of their Round 18 showdown . With no reports from Mentone, La Trobe, Kew, Powerhouse, West Brunswick or Salesian I' m forced to improvise considerably . M enton e finished with a 10 goal fina ' rm to blow out what looked to have been a respectable performance from La Th e superior fitness of the Vultures has been a constant this season and may prove even more decisive in the coming weeks . Macgeorge slotted another 10 to ensure his tally will finish at an extraordinary height, while the Barr bros and O'Meara continued some good form . Edwards, Camm and Bray battled hard for the Trobers . Wilflfa sfss C as forced to fight for the points against It after the Wests made effective use of the breeze and some running football to lead at the first change and apply enough pressure to trail by just 9 points at the main change . The CY's managed to revert to their preferred brand of football in the second half and a more direct approach created scoreboard dividends . The Westies continued their charge but never threatened, although skipper Cannane's 60m torpedo after the siren and into the breeze provided some solace. Wheeler, Featherston and McCutcheon were best for Willi . Parkside started its game against C in emphatic fashion, kicking 6 goals to i'I in the first qtr with busy players all around the ground . The Krushers improved in the second but could make no inroads on the scoreboard and found Parks runners Wise, Noble and Romano quite a handful . The Red Devils turned up the pressure in the second half, and despite the efforts of Papadopoulos, Kitts and Marshall for Oakleigh, 73 points separated the sides in the finish . Centreman Trevor Bromley staked his claim for BOG honours with 37 touches and three goals . S alesian and Peninsula
