"AND GUESS tvTiJ IS iiriCK IN TOWN? MARVELLOUS-MARCUS-OLIVE( " OK, it's a little too much to say to neutral observers that today's first semi is a world-championship, but if there is a bigger rivalry in A Section please send an email . The tale of the tape stretches back to school days when Xavs regularly defeated S A decade ago St Kevins' student _I Blood went to the more highly placed Xavs? It was a Greg Evans perfect match as Blood has now led O. : into nine successive A Section finals series .

! McCracken, Old Scotch's historian, informs us that the Cardinal's hold the record of 14 successive A Section final appearances set between 1922 and 1935 . When SKOBS made it into A Section in 1998 they were fodder for Xavs until Mike The Great (Milm : c- - r who coached Ormond to five A Section flags) arrived in 1999. Success was immediate with SKOBS breaking through for their first win over Xavs in the Amateurs but later in 1999 OX thrashed SKOBS . Later in 1999 SKOBS fell to Melburnians by three goals in the preliminary. Last year they split their home-and-away results again before the best match of the year was staged in the preliminary when Xavs got over SKOBS by four points . This year they have split their two rounds. After these battles many hombres from both teams have been unable to take the field the next week . Thankfully, the victor will have a week's recuperation before going into the preliminary against the loser of Marcellin and St Bernards . There's a theory that you've got to do your time in footy before you gain success so this year it should be the SKOBBERS' turn . "Each year is a separate entity," McArthur-Allen said . "It's a matter of whether we are learning . "No doubt they have been . "

Marcus Olive, fresh from taking out the best-andfairest in,an amateur London rugby competition, is ready to repeat his barnstorming performance from 24{}0 where he played his first game of the season in the reserves in the last round . Today, there is every chance the ruckman v ill play his

All four teams in the finals this year are Catholicboy clubs. "It's one of more profound aspects of having a la school from which to draw," McArthur -Allen, A teaches atA azenod, said . Last week, - ' kicked three goals in the I quarter despite having only 17 players when Anth( Cassell was sent off against Xavs. The Unico showed courage to come within 15 points . OX had John go down with a hamstring. 1 should pick up Lach F and Adam Jones, best-or last year's grand final, could play his first game t year after recovering from a groin injury . 1'c run for the finals was a week too late defeated by 58 points with Matt Greig and Li Hawkins kicking six goals each. In a bizarre set of cireumstances, and could play each other three times in a i of the games being staged at Elsternwick R week, the Bernies halted a 12-game wim r streak for the Eagles with a 14-point win . Well, there it is . 18 rounds of gut busting, and we've got 2 teams who take a breather, 2 keep going, 4 who are disappointed/ relieved and 2 who are devastated . The 'pre-season' is over and now the real stuff begins . Bring it on I say! ! :eview Down beachside way, Old eventually prevailed over a plucky by 30pts . A 5 goal 3rd qtr by OH was -r for the home side . Best for OH were Fletc 째r, Jayasekera and Harrop, and Beaumaris' were well served by Foley, Matulick and Fitzgerald . At Chelsworth Park, Ol d Ivanhoe held sway over a determined Therry and won by l3pts . 7 goals by 01 in the 2nd qtr set up the win . Best for 01 were Lillis, Tiernan and Lochran . Therry's best were Edwards (9 goals), Garoni and Carter. Frank was given a rousing send off by the boys from NOBs, as they made certain of Whitefriars' demise by posting a 29pt win . Retiree Boyle with 7 goals starred and was assisted by Drum and Barlow . The disappointing Whitefriars' better players were Phan, Ramp and Bryce . Br. Garvey bore witness to a shellacking, as tl- :l - . "- lens went nuts and buried Old Parat -s by a whopping 56pts . Mulligan (8 goals) blitzed against his old club, and the brothers Theodore went well too . Farrell . Jenkins and O'Loughlin battled hard for the OPs . Finally, E . E . Gunn put on an almost classic game of footy, when Ormond held off the fast finishing De La Salle by a measly 3pts . Best wishes to McConvill who entered hospital for leather poisoning, and the retiring S . Grace (6 goals) was seen in casualty too, as they burned for the home side . For DLS, Bowden, Morel and Buckley played well . Preview We've arrived at First Semi Final dav, and the home of football, EP, plays host to the rampaging Old Melir _s (1/5 and Old Haileybury (7/2) . The 2001 record stands at 2-0 in favour of OMs, and this will give Erwin Leyden plenty of confidence going into today's contest . Over the

past couple of months, he has slowly been able to gather his bunch of hard, tot -i iill together . A Section Hazell, !i ; goal : _ic

The scene is now set for a marvellous final's series, with all the finalists showing good form at the right end of the year . Congratulations to Mona "a . who averted relegation in a verv impressive an <ner. Farewell to Yarra Valley and Old C rs y, with every best wish for a quick return to D1 . To all the players, officials, and supporters involved in the finals, "Mav the road rise to meet your feet!" Which I think is Irish for "Don't put a foot wrong!" {It's usually said after a long session at the local! ) Monash Blu es thumped St, Leos in a magnificent effort, demonstrating that their recent narrow losses to final four sides were far from flukes . Liam Holloway again starred in the Asher's victory : Sam Lloyd did well at HB, Ben Merlin also in a minding role, and Sammy Hawkins at FF . The Animals were too disappointed to name names, although Brendt Henricus deserves a mention for his comeback game after a serious hand injury in Round 2 . Well done, Henry! Banyule pulverised Old Ge elong with a return to their early season dominance . OGS were never really in it and had no counter for the likes of Mick Gilbert, Simon Kaprooz, Chris & Cameron Tavlor, and Luke O'Connell . OGS had a great game from Hugh McCarthy on his wing, ably backed up by Hugh O'Brien, Jules Clark, and Jim Paul . Ivanhoe did just enough to beat Y Val: y ho were competitive all day but lacked the experience of the accomplished Hoes . The Hoes were particularly happy with the form of Chris Tucker & Matthew Maud up forward, and are approaching the 2nd Semi brim full of confidence . The Bushrangers had great efforts from Paul Cremean in the ruck, Brad Peake on the ball, Phil Valoppi who did well against Peter Flynn, and James Keem at CHF University Blac k s went down to Old. Camberwell, whose strong 2nd half won the day . Simon Hamm was brilliant round the packs for the Wellers, James Clyne was solid FB, & Matty Whitehead also defended well . Craig Franklin was Blacks best, well supported by Chris Schirner at CHF, and Ben Cunningham roving.

Old Carey was biovoz away Aquinas in the 2nd term, but the other quarters were surprisingly competitive, given the ladder relativities . Al Bethune gave a wonderful display of ruck wor k 1 C .

for the Daniel De-i was creat his flank , Moran was

solid in defence, Be ball, and Livo, Cm had field days up out in the Pa"er ' was a d di 4

Old Melburnians and Uni Blues played a very tight 'A' first semi. At the 18 minute mark of the final term, Chris Beltrame threaded one through for the Blues to lead by 2 points . OM's hit back and Peter Handbury kicked 2 goals for victory, 12 .19 (91) to 11 .9 (75) . Best for OM's were Andrew Thompson, Kennedy and Ellinghaus, and for Blues McLachlan, McIntyre and A. Henderson.

In 'B' Old Brighton were away far too early for T;ierry and had 5 goals on the board before Theny even crossed the half forward line . Therry were unlucky - their key mid fielder Pat German went down with chicken pox on the Friday . 1"nerry played catch up football, trailed by 3 points at half time and then OB's were brilliant in the premiership team, kicking 7 .4 to 0.1, and the game was really over. Best were Rickarby, Lennox, Oakley, Alderton . Birch, Alderson (Old B.) and Gauci, Seymour, Goodwin, Petrovski (Theny) . It was a disappointing 'C' Pmal series for Marcellln, losing their second semi to St Kevins by 22 points, and then after an even first half, were swamped by St Kilda/Sth Caulfield to lase 11 .10 to 21 .17 . The victors were too excited at their elevation to 'B', goalldekers and best players not received . Waters, O'Flynn and Bello were vmliant in defeat for Marcellin .

The story was much the same in 'D' section . Caulfield Grammarians finished on top, lost the second semi to a devastating last quarter by Monash Blues, and then were beaten by St Leos by 8 goals in the preliminary final. Darren Briggs (E Central 89%) won the aptly named Connell Cup (for AF scribes) from Barry Hickey (E East 84%), while Don Blackwood (A 65%) trailed the field. It was replay time in Under 19 Section 1 as Uni Blues were too strong for Old Melburnians in the preliminary final . The grand final was played at Oakleigh and umpired by Ben Schmidt and Andrew Stephen . The ground was hard and dry with a blustery northwesterly blowing . At half time it was Uni Blues 5 .7 to Old Xavs 6.4 . At the last change, 6 .9 to 7 .10. It was Old Xavs in the final term as they kicked 6.7 to 1 .0 to take out the flag for coach Pat Hawkins. Best were Heil, Hilbert, lacouangelo, Woodruff (OX) and Ryan, Fricker, Roydhouse (Uni Blues .

10 YEARS AGO - 1991 After a dramatic dash to grab finals spot in A' . Old Scotch's best were Duncan McCall, Rohan Aujard (5 goals from CHF), Hume, Eagle, Hunter, Reddish and for Ormond Jobling, Brown (4 gls), P. McDonald, Nankivel, B . Connell and S. Grace. Umpires were Steve McCarthy and Mark Bushfield . Monash Blues (C), MHSOB (D), Elsternwick (F) won the first semis. It was a thriller in 'E' where the scores at the last change were North Brunswick 10 .16 (76) and Aquinas 11 .11(77). It was a fantastic last quarter - 14 goals were scored, 7 by each team, and the final result the same solitary point, with Aquinas 18 .14 (122) still in front, North Brunswick

Coburg suffered their second successive defeat when they went down to Ormond by 27 points in the last round and lost second place. Coburg were hopelessly out of form, failing score a goal in the first half and went in at the interval with a 10 goal deficit. Coburg had little chance in the second half as heavy fog settled over the ground and it was impossible to see much of the play in this period . It was Ormond's first win in nine meetings with Coburg .

Winning Edge Presentations Sunday's games, which brought down the curtain on another successful season of Club XVIII football, were well attended despite the threatening weather. The games were tough contests in which players gave their all for their club . REVIEW SECTION I Despite a period of doubt early in the season, when three games were lost, Old Xaverians again have proven their pre-eminence by winning their sixth successive flag, which is their ninth in the last ten seasons . (1995 is the season of loss) . In his address to the big crowd, coat D d King paid tribute to ten players who a•fl o the "Crocodiles" this season . Obvio t y have blended well with thos e the last century! ! The game itself was a fairly even contest for nearly three quarters before the class of the Old Xaverians finally emerged . De La Salle to their credit proved formidable opponents, who especially during the first half of the third quarter played like a premiership team . Their difficulty was converting the opportunities created by their mid field players . To the credit of Old Xaverians, their restriction of key De La Salle forwards, Brad Robinson and Kevin Mannix to one goal each proved a key to their success . A telling moment in the outcome came at the fifteen minute mark of the third quarter when Tim O'Sullivan, broke a tackle to kick a long goal on the run . This goal took Old Xaverians to a two goal lead and ended the efforts of De La Salle, who had tried valiantly to wrest the lead during the first fifteen minutes of the quarter . The last quarter saw Old Xaverians virtually double their score as their demanding final's campaign took effect on the De La Salle players . In a five minute period between the ninth and fourteenth minutes Old Xaverians kicked five goals en route to their convincing fifty three point victory . The final score while showing the class of the Old Xaverians team, does not do justice to the competitive efforts of De La Salle, who seemed likely winners early in the second half . Again to

Th, -ar I I' : build up of a final and was punctuated a number of elements that seem to ec"-"e under particular scrutiny in such contests : inaccurate kicking, goals against the flow of play, undisciplined free kicks, big marks, and plenty of passion . Williamstown dominated much of the game and looked poised to blow their opponents away but allowed Park-side to remain in touch through late goals in each qtr . It took the Devils until late in the final term to get their running game into top gear, but their giant forward Trent Stonehouse came into his own with 3 telling marks in quick succession . His final shot on goal was the last kick of the day but registered only a point to leave scores locked at the bell . The CY's thus retained second position via a superior percentage . Stonehouse's 5 goals were a standout while teammate Anthony Vita played a great game on Williams. Featherston, Cocks and Robinson tin his 100th) were best for Willi , - one Amateurs completed a clean sweep with comfortable victory over Powerhouse . Coach Macgeorge rested and rotated several players to ensure their freshness for this week while Powerhouse endured yet another loss in a season that could not have been greater in contrast to last year's premiership success . Salesian looked to regain some much-needed momentum with a good win over + ,' i . Salesian was aggressive and first to the ball wh :,;h created many opportunities up forward . Th j were also disciplined and although the Krushers had very little to play for, the 81 point margin would have given all players a confidence boost ahead of this weekend's elimination final . For Oakieigh, Bromley was again in excellent form with another 35+ touches and 4 goals to complete a great second half to the season . Peninsula finished its season on a high with an 8 goal victory over Kew . The Pirates kicked 8 goals to 2 in a fiery third qtr that saw four players sent from the field. Peninsula was able to maintain its attack on the footy and had Payze (7) converting up forward. Atchison, Landry and Goldthorp were also good contributors for the victors . La Trobe easily accounted fo r and will look forward to next year an d enthusiastic list . The Wests will ' i" appointed with many 3/4 performances but are good enough 26

Review SECTION I What an absolute sensational day of football matches with SKOBS coming from behind to defeat St . Bernard's by Ipt to maintain second spot . Old Brighton did what it had to do and belted Uni Blues by I I lpts to get into the four and Old Scotch holding off a determined Do La to win by 4pts . Old Scotch & Be La fought out a very rugged opening 15 minutes until Be La (after an unfortunate decision) ~1 " sciplined allowed three Cardinal goals, roi actions. This 10-minute period allo~ °d Uid Scotch to produce a run-on with four unanswerf d goals . This ultimately proved the difference! Old Xavs provided another strong performance against a very determined Eagles team . Xad3 7g third quarter was outstanding and again proved to be the major difference . St. Bernard's at home was always going to be hard, so with Bernard's opening up with 4g to lg at quarter time, the signs were ominous . But NEVER doubt this SKOB team! He shori_' >t have worried because 15 iast half goals a: 3 :c_ Uni goalless ensured a 11lpt-winning margin and a place in the finals . Beaumaris had another pod win over the Nodders, with Coote, Gillespie and T.SeConchie dominating . SECTION 2 The last round of the season proved to be a beauty and' e ; u were the big winners, the Bees defeating Old I, ' : 26 points and in the process claiming top spo i the ladder and earning a vital br, this weekend . The Bees led all day, although Old N-anhoe, who had occupied top spot on the table for 7 the entire season, were always within strik- distance . Caulfield Grammarians claimed third spot and the crucial double chance when they defeated Old Essendon by 17 points in a great game . Caulfield trailed by 17 points at the last chance but booted six goals to nil in the last term . Napier, Sinclair and Fallu were best for Caulfield, while Old Essendon, who rounded out the season in fifth spot, were well served by Buckley, Wellington and Slater . Old Trinity finished fourth after ending the home and away games with a thumping 134-point win over Yarra UaL'ey. Old Trinity had 13 goalkickers, with Christopherson and Million topping the list with three each . Mi itone id Ajax clearly the two best sides in the competition, play in toda_vs 2nd Semi. Mentone have won both matches during the year and are therefore, the favorites . South elcourne Districts face up to Old Xavs at Benilei -? Reserve, still reeling from last week's loss of 26pts . Coach McKiIlop would have devised a plan in which to open 'die game up to release his goal kickers in Cheevers and Winters. Aquilina will need to be more destructive around the ball. Old Xavs on the other hand must be 'clzock full' of confidence with last week's performance. The likes of Chamberlain, Bryce, Cato, McCall and Dillion were the players that caused the havoc and this week will be looked at to repeat the performance . This game should go down to the wire, but I feel that the Swans should get up be a miserly 5 points .
