The Amateur Footballer, Week 22, 2001

I Fvelcome all Amateur Football followers to this, our one day in September - Grand final weekend . fhis weekend brings down the curtain on a p ;mendously successful year for our issociation . have seen very competitive football played in all sections of our competition, and of course have had great success in our representative games also . lll of our clubs should be justly proud of their ear, and I say that sincerely and regardless of chether or not they achieved on field success . : s I have said on many occasions the VAFA is , 2001, not only about providing a well run football competition, it is about, at club level, providing an environment where young men and women can also enjoy those intangible hings such as mateship, dependence, trust and support that when added together enrich yreatly our everyday lives . We are all passionate about our great game and our individual clubs. Often we are so engrossed in obtaining success for ourselves that we lose sight of what we are really about . The tragic events that occurred in the United States last week really do put into perspective the place Australian Rules football has in the overall scheme of things . Don't ever forget it is only a game that we are playing. This football year would not have been the success it has but for the magnificent support of my Executive Committee and our staff . I thank every one of you for your contribution and the passion you have for our Association . Congratulations to those clubs who have already won Grand Finals or who have gained promotion to higher sections for 2002 . In particular I congratulate Fitzroy Reds and ientonâ‚Ź Amateurs on both being "Premiers and Champions" in each of their sections , it is a wonderful effort to be the "premier"

club, but it is an even greater achievement to go through th e s e a s o n undefeated . To those in this week's games I wish every success to the competing clubs. This weekend is in that ;•- the A Section Gi we h ; e two participants ?o in n in an A section grand final - L Kevins . It is a wonderful ac ' 'e: ent by both clubs and I congratulate .iem on it .

In B section, the teams that finished first and second on the ladder after the first round matches -Old Ivanhoe and De La Salte, play off for the pennant. Both clubs have great respect for each other-both on and off the field -- and I am sure we will see a great game-good luck to you both . There has been a changing of the guard in A section with the Old Xaverians not playing in this year's grand final after having won the last six A section flags . When people talk of the Old Xaverians' achievement, they tend to focus only on their first XVIII . Consider also the fact their second XV11I have won four of the last six reserves section premierships, their UI19's five out of the last nine and their Club XVIII team nine of the last ten! .

This is a remarkable record and shows the strength of the Old Xaverians' club and the reason they have been so successful , Something for all clubs to aspire to! ! No doubt they will bounce back in 2002 . Good luck to every one this weekend. Thank you for your support this football year . Enjoy the break and I look forward to seeing you in 2002 .

21 weeks of matches, 5 representative tches, many meetings, many disputes solved , ,, ;;ny tribunal appearances and many of th e intless other things that make a football season find ourselves at G tal weekend . The very sound of it - Gr . usi <'inai! - conjures up great memories of fantastic football occasions and 1 ,hope this weekend provides similar experiences for many of the readers . Not everyone can be one of the winners, but you can win in the eves of hose watching if you can accept a loss with goo d _racc and spirit . Gcod luck to all finalists over the weekend . To those who played their final matches last vxekend - congratulations to Hampton Rovers (C °etion premiers) ; Old Camberwell (D1 premiers) ; ::i . ~-'one Amateurs (D2 premiers) ; 'Fit, roy 1 . (D3 premiers) and Ajax and OR 0 1 (under 19 blue and red premiers respectively) and to the runners up who gave their all - Old 17ssendon (C), Banyule (D1) ; Williamstown CYMS (D2), Bentleigh (D3) and Mentone Amateurs and Therry Penola (U/ 19) . I t<<?,e this opportunity of thanking everyone who has contributed to this highly successful season . To individualise is always dangerous because when you have gone to print it always dawns on you that you have forgotten someone that has been a huge contributor . Having said that I need to than', each member of the Administration for giving so much of their energy to make sure everything is always in place as well as possible for all our programmed events and also to Richar d Evans, Bruce McTaggart and the Executiv e Committee for their constant support of th e Administration . Wasn't it lovely to ingratiate ourselves in watching football last weekend after the terrible and tragic events in the United States of the week before ? Sport has the beautiful ability to do that in times of world, national or personal crisis and I am sure that Amateur football provided that tonic for us al l ast weekend . Let's all make sure that "your" VAFA continues to play an important part in all of ou r ves . U finally . . . . Thumbs Up (1):After a tight game (U19 Werribee v. Old Ivanhoe), where Werribee ,.,,ere the winners and before Werribee sang their ong they gave three cheers for Old Ivanhoe .

Thumbs Up (2) : To all club s who co-operate d with our request `--"~°-=--- ~-- -~ (web page), in light of the US tragedy, of where possible wearing black armbands, observing a minute's silence and flying flags at half mast . I was proud to feel the deep level of respect shown . Thank you . r- Thuanbs Do : To the supporters who jump the fences refusing to pay admittance prices at finals matches . It costs big money to secure first class venues for our finals and this money can only be raised by charging at the gates . One Collegians' fan "coughed up" and apologised . It is hoped that the Old Ivanhoe supporters will feel guilty and will agree to pay double at this Saturday's final . Their photographs have been taken whilst at Sandringham last week and gate staff will report back if these lads have "settled" . And in signing off for the year , . . . . Firstly I would like to bid farewell and a huge thanks for jobs well done to Michael Sneddon (Umpires Advisor) and his key assistant Geoff Ridd. We will miss you both - your efforts have been greatly appreciated . N ext a huge thank you to the members of the Executive and club volunteers who have given so much of their time to assist as duty officers at VAFA finals over the past few weeks - often a thankless task, but one that is appreciated by Administration . Best of luck to all readers and followers of our great game . I wish you an enjoyable weekend and look forward to doing it all again in the year 2002 . Phil Stevens Chief Executive ® f"?cer

"I HOPE Marcellin hears this : 'Tell them were coming'!" were the words used to start St. IÂŁ '' first ever VAFA A Section Grand Final week . "That's terrific," replied Marcellin coach Simon Dalrymple, "we're prepared". Like SKOBS, the Eagles are into unchartered territory . The best both clubs had achieved in A Section is third, St . Kevins in the past two years under MMA, and Marcellin three times from 1983-1990 . This time last year MMA was using his psychology training to see how he could get the club to take another step while Dalrymple, 36, was at the Olympics pondering whether his first year with the Eagles would be in A or B section depending on the Old Melburnians appeal to stay in A. There have been no recruits at MarceIlin just James rbrahim. and Oh `9 ' coming back from 1999, and Woodrow Medallist Dinneen enjoying good health this year. St. Kevins have also developed their existing talent with the standouts the Giansiracusa twins, Mick and Josh . The Boys from Bulleen are two-nil head-to-head this year, having thrashed SKOBS in seven of the eight quarters. It's that eighth quarter at Trevor Barker Oval that gives today's game a twist . SKOBS kicked i l goals to two to fall short by a goal . This along with SKOBS' come-from-behind wins in this finals series against Xaverians and St . Bernards has given the Toorak-based club an edge . In last Sundays seven-point preliminary final victory over the Bernies, St. Kevins' average age was 23 .6 years . Marcellin's average age in the second-semi win over the Bernies by 38 points was 26 .09 years . St. Kevins had one player 30 years old, Mike Kavanagh, whereas Marcellin had, Tony Caffry and Chris Slattery both 35, Steve O'Flynn 32, Andrew Duncan 31 and Justin Seabury and Andrew owan both 30. "If it's a hot day a couple of those players who are coming to the end of their careers might find it hard against the young kids who can run all day," MMA said . "Our fitness is the best in the comp and we've come from behind to kick nine goals to one against Xavs at Toorak Park and we go hard all day," Dalrymple countered .

MMA is the VAFA's most successful coach with five A Section

- - flags, two more than a ~- -: group with three, and Dalrymple seems ready for th mental battle after having an insight into M :,; at young age. When Dalrymple won the under-13s best-and-faire ; with Canterbury-North Balwyn, MMA was the club senior coach . "Mike took some interest in me," Dalrymple said . The respect has continued . "When Simon got the sack from Old Trinity in 1996 supported him," MMA said .

Asked if the connection would affect his coachin, Dalrymple said : "It's just a coincidence" . -TODAY'S key match-ups should be Eagle full-forwar Treganowan, in career-best form, against Pat O'K e who has become a team leader ; Stev O'Connor in the mid-field against Dinneen and Mar Browne, who rucks to the best mid-field in the VAF1 against Garth Pickford . Not sure if the age is a bi factor at this level because Dalryrnple will use h veterans off the bench . The best parts will be tib, centre breaks and Marcellin's height versus SKOA shorts . Maybe St. Kevins' experience at Elsternwic Park could be a factor.

-ST.KEVINS' effort into making the Grand Fin ; culminates 10-year and five-year plans . In 1991 whe SKOBS were in D Grade, the committee decided I change the culture with the appointment of Petrie who is still a supporter. Mike, a former VF umpire, said: "We got rid of the boozers and the losers In 1994, Tim Hart was into his first year of coachin~ when the club was runners-up in D Section and d. committee again sat to re-assess its goals .

President during the period Steve Browne said it . emphasis was put onto recruiting, makin gadminstraionstronger, clubdiscplineadplayin g team game. -ST. KEVIIVS's last premiership was in 1996 in Section, Marcellin's last flag was in 1998 in B Sectior -GARRY Foulds, coach of St Bernards . believes th McIntyre Final Four System needs to change to th arrangement used in last year's Olympic year . Th final four matches stayed the same but the first an second-semi finals were played on the openin weekend. "It is too much of an advantage for the tear coming out of the first-semi, which has a week's res meeting the team coming out of the second-semi th-, has to play in successive weeks . "Also the team goin

;,t,) the grand final has to play twice in four weeks and ,11at can be bad too . "Last year worked well," Foulds , o played for Essendon during the VFL final four :_ :id . Foulds was speaking after going out i n sets but last year the Bernies made the gran d er winning the second-semi . .( iULDS said the Bernies needed to get two more -r,lcling on-ballers after St . Bernards allowed a five? lead half-way during the third slip to St . Kevins . i+-teltell, who dominated the centre in the firs t 1!,1 if ; <_jeed. "I ran out of gas in the third term and ,;lule have Dan Byrne and Ben Jordan, other -:ms have them and a few extra to rotate," Mitchell . Mitchell had a snap-shot from 25 metres in th e third term to bring back the momentum but he mi~3ed . It was at the Glenhuntly Rd end from a similar <pot to where he missed a set-shot in last veal's grand tinai loss to Xavs but then it was in the last quarter . 1~ain it would have given momentum to the Bernies . une kick doesn't make a match," Mitchell said . Tiie preliminary final was highlighted by Mitchell's im-mate Tait Wilkinson, who was dominant in the rst half at half-back, being benched in the third term . ,,?,AA used his smaller men in positions when kicking uto the breeze beautifiilly. It left the tall Wilkinson out a spot and it gave the SKOBS bite . 6eL, ~D_ - dominated the final term like he did in iic first-semi but this time in attack . The 183cm .)olhnan proved too fast taking marks and tricking two D:- -u Tapping smiled when asked if would b e Old Xavs next year. After five years at Old Jre'uton most thought Tapps had temporarily retire d it lie said he was available . :ci i inherit Tim O'Sha , who has three flags nd a fourth in his four years, said he was yet to talk a the committee. Cc=ch of the Year. Marcellin's Simon Dalrymple. In day's and last week's copy you will find reasons for ,imon's selection . Even if MMA were to win today and )llect an unprecedented six A Section flags as coach, nd add a break of 11 years between premierships five ad six, the achievement is extraordinary . My 3clection was based on the home-and-away . <'Iayer of the Year : Old Scotch's Luke Hawkins. OK, ,uke only played nine games because of his ramitments with Essendon in the VFL . The slightly ,uilt red-head averaged six goals a match which would ave put him on course for the ton . The best standard atch I saw this year was at Camberwell when th e -leaping Hawkins was t riple-teamed by Old Xavs a the small oval . Luke still got five goals which Xavs ,d budgeted for. .1 =-.=.r'YIEW of today's match can be seen on th e '.FA's website : www.vafa .asn .au including the Player he Finals. In contention are : Nick Iffitchell, David , Tony Caffry, Mark Browne, Glenn Cox, rd Dinneen, Ben Dollman ;,nor.

The Holy Grail is up for grabs, and its down to just two : Old 1vanhoe and De La Salle . Good luck to all clubs in grades playing today . Review That same wind that lives at Elsternwick was alive and well down the road at Sandringham, as Old Ivanhoe proved too good for a seemingly lethargic Old Melburnians by 21 pts . Mrs Weddle's boy keeps -winning the two up, as OI kicked with what appeared to be a 5-6 goal breeze . It was a quarter of contrasts . OMs did particularly well for the first 20 or so minutes, as Treloar was running hard and Berry was finding space, but they couldn't quite find the goalposts . Hope was getting plenty of the ball and J . Weddle was running around like a rover, booting 4 goals for the quarter . 01 held a 15pt lead, but one felt it wasn't enough . We were all expecting OMs to pile on the goals in the 2nd qtr, but all we saw was an avalanche from 01, and a killing of the contest . The league leaders controlled the packs and found themselves in plenty of space, as OMs had dropped off their intensity from the first qtr. Crowley was wearing Mulligan like a second skin, choking all life from the big man . 01 slammed on 4 goals against the tide, before Berry (OMs) broke the drought at the 24 min mark, but the damage was done . A Toovey goal on the siren was that straw that saw the camel scream as his back snapped in half!! The main break saw 01 lead by an almost unbeatable 47pts .

The third quarter wasn't the greatest of spectacles, as both sides battled the difficult breeze . Treloar for OMs was playing well against the tide, and Lochran and 150 gamer Haros (01) were also showing plenty of zip . 01 had plenty of the ball but could only score points, whereas Treloar capped off a good qtr with the first goal at the 28 min mark, and then Berry followed quickly with another to put a smidgin of hope in the Redlegs' camp . They were facing a 41pt deficit, but had the wind at their backs in the final term . Again, the wind had an effect on the quality . Two goals by Hecker and Mulligan of OMs within the first 10 mins reduced the margin 8

to 29pts, and there was a minor chance of an upset . However, the 01 defence, led by the miser Crowley and Mrs . Weddle's othe boy, stood firm against a mini barrage to wiz comfortably in the end . For the victors, Crowley absolutely strangle( his opponent, and Hope and Haros wer, strong in the midfield, which gave 01 plenty o drive around the packs . OMs had grea contributions given by the youngster Treloar and the experienced pair of Berry (4 goals and Lovett, but did not have enougi teammates who matched their efforts . Preview I suppose I could be forgiven for writing thf same stuff I wrote 2 weeks ago, as it's < replay of the 2nd semi final between Olc Ivanhoe (1/3) and De La Salle (9/4) .

The scoreline we all now know stands at 2-1 in favour of the flag favourites, but the win weeks ago by DLS was a good one . It was complete contrast to the 2 meetings in the home and away season, as 01 gave their more inexperienced opponents 2 reasonable beatings . The chiefs from Pine Lodge are relaxed fo

inow, astheyv irw?anto Section in 2002 and the 2001 OF. Considering the year that they have had (15 . 3), no-one in amateur football would begrudge the residents of Chelsworth Parls the spoils that have befallen them .

Hope found some touch last week, and so did the nimble footed 'rover' (read beanpole) in J . Weddle . OI's equivalent of the human glove in Crowley played a belter last week, and will make life difficult for his opponent today . And make no mistake, that man Branigan is due to fire . Paul Cooper has had a relaxing 2 weeks, as the great win the in the 2nd semi turned around the indifferent form shown by his charges over the last 6 weeks of the home and away. Before that mini slump, it would be reasonable to suggest that DLS, along with today's opponent, were the stand-outs in 2001 .

~ ct again, in their last game, it was the old rcliables of the 'Dad's Army' of Mackintosh, Toohey and Swift that held sway, and led their younger teammates along for the ride . ~[ackintosh is in such rare form, he has won ~ 3rd B&F for the club (well done, Macka!!), .Iid encourages all and sundry . I'm even considering a comeback it's that inspiring!!, V,'ell, it's down to this . The finale of the ipping stakes . The flag favourites and league leaders from day 1, showed a return to form l :,st week, and this does not auger well for the 1),)-,-s from Malvern . They'll have their work cut out to win today, as I'm of the belief that the 2nd semi was an abberation for 01, as they've been the stand-outs all year .

The only hope DLS have got this week is if Chef Carroll found some more of that magic potion for last week's breakfast, and if they win, I'll be and opening a chain of restaurants!! My tipping has been absolutely schizenhausen, but I'll be the happiest man on Earth if I am proven an idiot with my selection . 01 by 26 pts .

:1' 1, _-a' eydsury ( I I 5 ) vs Ormond (4 1 1 ) I've maintained all along that OH are the best team in the Magoos this year, and I'm not going to get off the wagon . Even though Ormond are tough and experienced in finals, I think that OH will pack too many guns and win by l9pts .

To the victors go the spoils . so t o _ go all the plaudits this wee' . u ..-r they convincingly rolled OR in the Grand Final on Saturday . To _ill Jewett, Norm Goss and his coaching panel, to Steve Anderson and his players, and all associated with the club, congratulations on your season it was a premiership richly deserved and may you continue to enjoy the celebrations . It is the club's third premiership in 6 seasons a magnificent achievement in anyone's language . To John Newbold, Chris Bye, Sam Fleming and all at Bomberland do not des~^ir too much, I know it is disappo i Ii 1,5 to stumble at the final hurdle, you hav had a great season and the trip to B-Grade ~ :- some small consolation .

Ando won the toss and decided to take advantage of a< - to as the game opened at a furious pace . _ o rs kicked a couple of points but then Old _ssendon into the wind kicked the first goat and were looking quite good . Dean Busby up forward for the Rovers was having a big influence on the game and kicked one himself and had a hand in another . Half -,vay through the term scores were level and one felt the guys in the gold and green were wasting their opportunities, but persistence paid off and a few late goals saw the Rovers with a handy 18 point buffer at the first change . Hampton during the year had certainly earnt a reputation for their tackling and this was making it difficult for the Bombers to break eiear and get their running game going . Big Port Power kicked an early goal to increase the lead, and then for the next 10 minutes or so the ball rebounded between the backlines as both sides tried to gain true ascendancy . Denver Artz as usual was evervwhere and his one percenters and second efforts inspired his younger team mates, both sides kicked a couple of points before a precision pass from Luke Holt found Buckets who duly produced a major. The big Chief along with Gino and Timmy Wilmott and Woods had the Bombers forivards under control and they could only manage 1 goal with the wind giving the Rovers a 23 point lead at the main break . One felt the flag was almost at David Street as 19

goal and if the game wasn't over then ; a couple of minutes later when r delivered a totally fair bone jarrin_ cn Hakim which stopped the gam . id not stop the Rovers momentum - ~ r : totally knocked the stuffing out e Bombers . By now everything was fa; ] r. _ , o place for the bayside brigade their passes were crisp and were delivered with precision, a goal to Lutterschmidt was against the flow but then a couple more to Luke Holt and Power saw 51 points the difference as everyone headed for an orange . The final quarter of the season with the wind advantage was a chance for the Bombers to salvage some pride . They got their hands on the ball often enough but were pretty ineffective due to the continued pressure applied by the Rovers who although having the game totally won were not relaxing at all . The Bombers managed to kick a couple but were then totally overwhelmed as the Rovers through Luke Holt and Denver followed by a great roving goal by Matt the kid McKellar and Sugar Healy sealed their fate and as the siren sounded for the last time in 2001 the Rovers were jubilant and rightful victors . In a great game Michael Fletcher was awarded the Michael Ritterman Medal for BOG, Anthony Browne in the ruck took the honors over Scott McPherson, Denver was just Denver, Timmy Wilmott played very well as did Woods, Martin and Zampaglione . For the Bombers Panagiotopoulos was their most consistent 4 quarter player receiving si .,nn,,t from Evans, Flaherty and Fleming .

(Her fluttering tunic floated in the breeze .) The above is the beautiful final line of the Roman poet Ovid's version of the myth of 'Europa and the Bull', describing the last sighting that on-shore onlookers have of the lovely Grecian maid Europa as she is carried out to sea on the back of her pet bull . It came to mind as we stood in the in the middle of Box Hill City Reserve, coats flapping in the wind, doing all the final things before season 2001 slowly floated out of view on the sea of time. It was a sensational day's football . The players struggled with a quirky, wind-bonked ball, yet skills and courage there were aplenty, and both matches could have gone either way in dramatic last quarters . For Alan Mitchell, and all at Old Camberwell, the day turned out a triumph, augmented by the news that the Weller's U19's had also triumphed, to make it three flags for their day's activity . For Banyule and University Blacks, disappointment for sure, but pride also, in that their players were still going hard at the ball as the siren ended their contests . John Manton, and family, were there to present the John Manton Medal to a very worthy winner in Travis Hardman of Old Camberwell, who capped off his great play round the packs by kicking the goal that sealed the result for his team . Many thanks to Brain McMahon, Secretary of the Box Hill Hawks, for his terrific help throughout the Finals, and to Brendan Turville and his crew for their catering extravaganza ! And to close off the opening metaphor, it was great to hear at the after match, that the massive, bull-like (bulls being bigger than bears!) frame of BIG Dave Williams (the D1 2001 B&F winner!) will be once more wearing the Banyule jumper in 2002, and not retiring as previously intended !

SENIOR S All present observed a minute's silence in recognition of the tragic events in the United States during the week, and the game started

with the 1 ;3e , _ :,s kicking to the Scoreboard end, having the dubious aid of a swirlin g

north westerly which rendered the flight -1th of the ball a dodgy parabola complete with complex harmonics! The tackling of both sides was relentless and Anthony Damen and Robert Sneddon gave the players every chance to clear the ball from congested areas all day, Greg Whitcroft would not have been happ~ with the 15 points lead the Bears had at the first change, and less so with the conversior. rate . In the end, the latter turned out to be < key factor in the Wel3er's win, they kickec 8 .11 with the wind, while the Bears secret 3 .14! But I would have to say in the forwards defence, that the wind made getting the bal . aligned properly on to your foot hard enough and what happened after that was anybody' ; guess . So Shane Properjohn kicking 4 for thf Wellers, and Dave Witchell 3 for the Bears were damned fine efforts . The Bears came tc within 3 points of the Wellers at about the 2( minute mark of the last term, with the matei wide open, and the intensity of the play jus extraordinary, but the Wellers' slight paci advantage gave them more first uses of th ball in the dying stages, culminating in Travi : Hardman's sealer just before the siren to en( a memorable match . In addition to Travis Old Camberwell had stand out efforts fron Nathan Lippiatt in the ruck and general fiel play; Rohan Kapoor was brilliant on his wing Shane Properjohn did the job around th goals ; and Matt Hanson was steady acres half back all day . For the Bears, Jason Plan started slower than usual, but he just gc better and better as the day wore on, and wa instrumental in the Bears major challenge i . the last term ; Dave William's virtuos performance on the ball and his ground skill were amazing for his size ; Brad Willmore' work rate on the ball was in overdrive all da) and Clinton Burke capped off a good day o . his flank with a goal when it was needed . Th umpires handled the tension of the conte: and the difficult conditions with eonsiderabl aplomb, and when I responded to Anthony' customary enquiry back in the dressing roon as to how I thought they went, b commenting, "I found myself for the most pa

in, strong disagreement with those spectators \%. i o were shouting disapproval at you!' . I nleant it ! 1'1P_s match was a mud-less version of the i~.ton Wall game, the wind made open play a i- :1rity, and whither the ball went, there was- a :,eething mass of players wrapped around it! [ he only difference in the end was that John 1?<uvey's unit made marginally more use of ,'neir opportunities than James Trevaskis' . This was one of those games where the effort t f both sides was such, that you wished they could both have won, but unfortunately our rules don't cater for that outcome . The defining moment came in the dying seconds %vith Blacks only three points down, when a L'3ac?_s forward, half a meter from the goalline, attempted to mark an arrow straight 50 metre kick from near the boundary, dropped it, and the ball was rushed through for a point! That bundle of milliseconds will be i,played in the participants' minds, possibly for years, but the eventual result will always be as recorded on the Goal Umpires' scorecards . Stephen Derry, James McKenzie, .nd Dion Brauer were somehow singled out '.'or special mention by the Wellers mention from one of the most even sides I've ever seen . Which was equally true of the Blacks, Smith, Schilling and Ralph were outstanding players on a day when you could have named the entire 22!

GREGORY OAKLEY (Collegians) -3 S

5 YEARS AGO - 1S c 6 Old Xaverians, 1995W premiers, had wun only two out of the first nine games, when they sacked coach Simon Meehan, and replaced him with 1995 reserves premiership coach, Nick Bourke . And in a tight A" section grand final, the Xavs held out the desperate fight - back by Collegians to win by 5 points . The game was played in a strong swirling wind . Michael Holmes at C.H.B . for Xacs won the Jock Nelson Medal for best on ground. Q by Q scores were : O .X. 3 .4 3 .5 7 .10 8 .10(58)/ Coll. 1 .0 4.3 4 .3 8 .5(53) Daniel Bonati followed his five goals in the preliminary final with four goaLs . Good players were John Bowen, e Bn .tshfield, James Hawkins, Matt McClelland (OX) and Matt Galbraith, Jim Bennett, Brett Jefferson, Andrew KenneaAy, Tony Parkin (Coll .).

The premiership team was : Bks: Brennan Brushfield Hawkins H. Bks: Sassi Holmes Ford C: A. Dillon Hannebeny Bowen HF : Donati Blood Coughlan F: J. McDonald Berry Dann RR Jones McClelland Wood I/C : Richardson Ockleshaw Keyhoe Umpires were Peter Gersch and Martin Jackson. Old Trinity went right away in the second half to defeat Old Paradians 14 .13 to 9 .9 to win the 'B' section flag. Best were Vanderhoek, Board, Seuling, Cummings, Sealy, Dalrymple (O.T.) and Canavan, Dallas Mulligan, Boyd, S . Swindon, Hartford (O .P. ) Umpires were Mark Gibson and Justin Toohey. 10 YEARS AGO- 1991

A dreadful week of weather preceded the Grand Final weekend . Some relief on Thursday then "monsoon" rain about noon on Friday left EP on the grandstand side looking like a lake . His expertise and 40 years experience as a plumber soon became evident when Executive member, John Miles, assisted by Phil Stevens, got the pumps working to leave the oval in reasonable shape .

Well Saturday, was described as an appalling day - the ground became a bog and there was a blustery wind . Be La's hopes of three flags in a weekend rose when they won the Under 19 flag defeating a confident Old Xaverians 13.17 to 9.5. Best were McCarthy, Crowe (4gls), Dean (De La) and Purcell, Collins, Hansen (OX) . Umpires were Bell and Clinch .

It turned out a black day for Old Xaverians . As the rain kept coming. OX. and St Bernard's slogged it out in the B' Section Grand Final . Q by Q scores were St. B . Old X.

2.4 5 .4 5 .5 5.5 (35) / 1 .1 2.1 3 .3 4.3(27)

It probably created two records at least, the lowest ever total score scored in an Amateur senior grand final, and the lowest scoring second half. Of the nine goals scored, five were kicked off the

ground . The only scoring I 1 shot in the last quarter was at the 5 minute mark when Dave Taylor (Old X) kicked at the ball in mid-air, connected and it went through for a goal . Umpires were Dalgc :;h and Bushfield. Best were V. Comito, Carey, L . Purcell, MaIlia, S . Walsh, G. Wood (3 gLs) (St Bern) and J . McKay, M . Hannelery, Holmes, Petroff, Boolan, McCorkell (Old X .) . Sunday was reasonable. The ground was heavy but drying out . De La made it two flags when in A' Reserves they produced a withering last quarter. Trailing Old Scotch 5 .5 (35) to 9.9 (63), they kicked 6 .2 (38) to 0.1 to win . Then De La devastated North Old Boys as they went on to kick 10.8 (68) in the first half to NOB's 1 .5 (11). It was a happy afternoon tea for De La, miserable for NOB, and a dull prospect for the second half. Well, it was a sensational second half. North Old Boys players lifted and at the last change it was 11 .10 to 9.8. De La were staunch in the final term and while North Old Boys had the better of the quarter, the siren found De La in front by 5 points, 12 .10 (92) to 11 .11(83). A truly magnificent game - De La superb in the first half and NOB courageous in the second half : The tcain.s that lined up as follows : De La Safe O.C : Coach: Bernard Dunn Bks: Mick Hegan Andrew Mackintosh John Tully Hbs : Mark Lowe Peter Rennie David Rosman C: Chris Campbell Roger Prezens Chris Belleville Hts: Steve Harrison Michael Bolt Nick Fraser F : Damien Kinsella Pat Mannix Craig Wright Rks: Andrew Ronchi Col McClounan Brett Mahoney I/C: Patrick O'Callaghan Matt 0'Callabhan Julian Moloney North Old Boys

Coach : Robert Hyde Bks: Owen Abrahams Rohan Atkinson Nick Garnham Hbs: Bruno Conti Peter OFarrell Tony Cahil l C : David Baker Tim Jones Damien Cerini Hfs Luke Boyle Stephen Brazil Brian Hanlon F: Tim Hogan Tony Egan Paul Kearney Rks : Darren Martin Stephen Moloney Gerard Phylan d I/C : From P. Considine, F. Tierney. M. Hedley, M. Boyd, P. Dwyer Umpires were Richard Simon and Justin Toohey . Best were Mahoney, Ronchi, Prezens, Bolt, Fraser, Moloney (De La), Phyland, O'Farrell, Conti, Hanlon, Cahill, Abrahams (NOB's). Umpires corner congratulated Peter Main, Tim Shearer, David Gourley, Denis Webster, Jason Tyrell, Andrew Hogan, Nick Edwards who had been invited to trial with the AFL over the summer. Rumour has it that the O'Callaghan clan (2 sons in senior, the other in reserves), their father, a President, player and invaluable goal umpire for the Reserves, led De La celebrations which were long and wearing. And to be politically correct, I should mention that Mary, mother and wife and also ex committee member, helped

0 15 o& ians were on top all day to defeat De La 16 .19 to 12 .10, in preliminary final to earna second chance against North Old ;, and perhaps win its first'A'section flag since 1961 . VFI. Chief

-amnrissioner Ross Oakley who played in the 1961 team was at lie game to bring the Lions luck . And perhaps he did just that. t ileir accuracy 21 .6 was unbelievable . They kicked 14 goals nit until they scored their first behind in the time-on period of ize third term. Collegians lined up as follows : 3: Laussen Williams Irvine ,`IB: S.Hinehen(C) Schober G . Parsons A. Ingleton C: Tregear Kahn I IF: Baum Bickford I. Herman P; Lemon R. Herman Pollock [1s: Newman Hoyle K. Parsons 1(C : Wolff Roberts G-:.ch: Bruce Ferguson . Umpires: J . Horwood, S . Urwin . Jest were Hoyle, Tregear, Williams, I . Herman, R Herman (CoIl) and for North Turnbull, Cahill, Brown, Walters, Weir. First and second on the ladder, Old Paradians and Old Xaverians met in 'B' Grand Final. OP staved off a strong final challenge from :avs who kicked 3 goals in 4 minutes but went down 11 .12 to 13.10 . 117e OP team was : 1 3 : Grills Pritchard Nelson HB: M. Considine McCann Wood C : Busch P. Considine Exton (C) HF: Powick Skerrett Fahey F: Gleeson Way Corcoran Rks : Atta Spillane Roe [!C: Heffernan Powel l

Coach : Gerard Sho lly. Umpires: P. Wiseman, K. Segota . Banyule won 'C' section flag from fourth place when the.V led all day to easily defeat Old Trinity by 43 points . Best were O'Brien, Hoare, Brockwell (Bany) and Gorton, Cowley, Wallace (Old T .). Ormond won their third successive 'A' reserve flag to go with their Under 19 premiership.

20 YEARS AGO -198 1 In an unequalled form reversal, Old Xaverians avenged their _ cond semi 96 point defeat by North Old Bo,-s when they = controlled the 'A' section grand final throughout to win by 1 8 points, 15.21 to 13 .15 . Nick Burne continued his great form at full forward with 5 goals while Stephen Curtain also contributed 3 and was a great performer around the ground. The best player on ground was Old Xaverians captain John Noonan, who rucked strongly all day. A tight knit Old Xaverians defence shut out North's semi final star Shane Maguire . Others to play well for Old :~averians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody. Old Xaverians joined the select band of clubs which had won'B'andA: Section premiership in successive years . Old Xaverians only other appearance in an 'A' Section grand final was in 1964 when it was beaten by Old Paradians.

Best players for North Old Boys were Burgin, Considine, S. Weir, ORourke, Borcich and S. Hibbert . University Blues made their stay in B' section worthwhile when they outclassed Collegians 18.12 to 11 .14. Stars for Blues were T; c;uin, Fry, Yeo, Cortese, O'Brien, Bedford, Sleeman (4goals) and oi Cc,lle.~ans, Wagstaff Cook, R Loder, T . Loder, Etherington and

45 YEARS AGO - 1956 A memorable year with the Olympic Games in Melbourne and an exhibition match held on the final day between VAFA and a team of amateur players from VES, and VFA . George McTaggart received his 'Award of Merit" from the Australian National Football council for long and valued service in the interest of the game . Ivanhoe after losing the final to Coburg by 1 point exercised their right of challenge and what the game may have lacked in svstem it certainly more than made up for in excitement as at no time was there more than a difference of 6 points in the scores. At the final siren, Ivanhoe was 2 points in front with John Manuell of Ivanhoe marking before the siren and kicking truly to give 'Hoes victory by 8 points. (Long time executive member John Miles, was a member of the team - NR). It was Ivanhoe's first 'A' section premiership . Collegians won "B" section, South Melbourne City "C" and Old Geelong Grammarians defeated FTSOB, De LaSalle OC and UHSOB quite comfortably to take out the 'D' section premiership. (Modesty forbids the author from describing the game other than to state that he played in centre for 0GG - NR). Ormond easily won Junior premiership, defeating Old Scotch .

50 YEARS AGO - 195 1 Old Melburnians welcomed new coach, John Mitchell, and among the recruits, Ian Rutherford and John Davis, who went on to be great players in the club's 3 premierships, 1953-54-55 . Amateur football was saddened by the death of University Blacks' centre half back, Brian Manual - the Ormond scribe Dr J .R Porter wrote, "deepest sympathy to Mr and Mrs Manuel on the loss of their son, Brian, who we had come to know as a sportsman - in its highest meaning . Today we meet the Blacks in whose ranks h e was an ornament . The game and life go on. Vale, Brian" . Old Paradians as always enjoyed their trip to Geelong weather, good company, and a last minute victory. Maurie Considine played an outstanding game at fu ll back . MHSOB Juniors were pleased with the great form of Ned Roberts, later to win a Brownlow Medal at centre half back for St Kilda Captain of the team was Geoff Paul who had a long career with the club and in 2001 is a member of the Tribunal . Advertisers were Pelaco 'It is indeed a lovely shirt Sir", Taylors Coaching College, Jamieson's Men's Wear, L-Jay Knitwear, Melbourne Sports Depot, State Savings Bank of Victoria, Lindsay Hassett's Sports Store. "A" section captains were Doug Arnold (Hampton Rovers, Laurie Muir (Old Scotch), Ken James (Ctivealth Bank), Keith Lewis (Colleg), Joe Sheehan (Ormond), Geoff Sinclair (Uni Blues), Harry Meredith (Uni Blacks), Peter Cox (Old Meiburnians), Bill Sparks Qvanhoe).

The selectors picked the following players to represent the State in the Carnival at St Kilda Cricket Ground - Doug Arnold, Sam Birtie

(Hampton Rovers) ; Duncan Anderson John Jolley (lint Blues) ; Peter Cox, Bryce Thomas (Old Meiburniasrs) Martin Bedford, Don Morone (Old Scotch Collegians); Don Bills (Malvern); Karin Clark (lranhoe); Eric Donaldson, Geoff Harris (Ormond) ; Alan Ferguson (State Savings Bank); Geoff Hibbins, Brian Judd (Collegians); Murray Mathieson (Geelong) ; Alan Mellors (Bwiak) ; Harry Meredith (Uni Blacks) : Phil McLaughlin (Old Parad'ans); A1by Padlev (Kew) ; Alan Shiel, Jack Thomas (Coznmonraealth Bank). Canberra were playing in the Carnival and in the team was Richard Woolcott; later the head of Australia's Foreign Affairs Department. Western Australia included B. Sneddon, 24, 60", 13 .10, later to be Leader of the Opposition and Speaker in the House of Representatnes . The 5 team Carnival was thrown into confusion when in the first match diCA . (11 .14) drew with Tasmania (12.8) . Canberra fielded a strong team beating S.A. 11 .11 to 9.12, and WA, 19 .12 to 12 .10. This put them into the final against Victoria whose only previous match in the carnival was a 39 .18 to 4 .4 viii over Tasmania Victoria defeated Canberra to win 18.20 to 2.5. Jack waLsh retired after umpiring VAFA matches for 21 years. In his playing days, Jack had been a leading goalkicker for Brighton in the VFA. His son . Brian 4kraLsh, went on to be a great player for Ormond and St Kilda (VFL) while srery recently his grandson, Peter Wilson, was captain and best and fairest at Hampton Rovers . Best and Fairest awards winners were "A' Geoff Hibbins (Collegians), B' Phil McLaughlin (Old Paradians), 'C' Bill McGrory (Glenhunt(y), D' G . Allen (Teachers College), Junior Neil Roberts (1viHSOB). Hampton Rovers won the last match against Old Scotch to leap into the four at Old Scotch's expense . Commonwealth Bank, Uni Blues, Ormond finished in first 3 places. The two top teams, Bank and Blues, were both rolled in the semi finals and the 2 district teams met in the Grand Final, with Onnond trying to make it 2 in a row. In a low scoring 'A' Section final Ormond led until the final minutes when Hampton Rovers big nuelmian, Ray Clover, kicked a goal to giv e the Rovers their first ever 'A' section flag by 5 points, 7 .12 to 7.7 . Best for the Rovers were captain Doug Arnold in his last VAFA game, a career that had started with the Rovers back in 1936, Laurie Anstee who next year transferred to Ormond, famed centre half forward Sam Birtles. John Orton, Rusty warriett, recruited from Geelong College, as were 2 other members of the team, John Cameron and Merv Davidson and rugged Don Kinsey who is still seen around the club . Coach was Norm 'Bos,s" James . Among the gaefrickers was Bruce De Lacy, a son of the legendary Sporting Globe football waiter, Her De Lacy. Bruce was later VAFA Tribunal Secretary for many years. Ormond juniors went through the season undefeated, and after a scare from Powerhouse in the Semi Final, defeated MHSOB in the Grand Final Leading players for Ormond were Ian B'rshop (in late years an All Australian Amateur), John Bvrne, Col Wilson (went on to be a member of Melbourne's GTL premiership teams), Graham Barnard, Lindsay Shannon and Frank Forbes . Coach was Clan ic Vontcm, former Collegbns, VAFA interstate player of 1936, and St Iiilda (WI.) rover. 65 . o - 2935 Finals time and controversy was there even in those years long ago . At the delegates meeting the Parkdale delegate alleged that %a-em, the side that finished on top in'C' Section after home and home games had "rung in째 a disqualified junior league player . If the allegation turned out to be true, Parkdale would go to the'top' of the ladder, Old X"awrians into the four and Pvtal4rern out of the four.

Parkdale s allegation was that one of its players recognised a man playing for PvSahern as a member of the i,t'est Park side in the Juntor League who had been disqualified by the tribunal of U bah, when he did not appear to answer a charge of it conduct. The complaint was referred to the executive co irn with power to act after the deciding matter. The finding was that 'Virile the player would not have been ent3led to play with the club if he had disclosed all facts, lie had not done so. Accordingly the club was exonerated from all blame but the player had his permit withdrawn" . In "'A" section Collegians after a magnificent season met State Savings bank, the last team to beat them, 141A1' BACK on May 3p . The game played at Oakleigh, was won easily by Collegians, 1 t .18 to 6.11, their first premiership since 1904 and sixth since VA'A was founded in 1892 .

The Association President. Ivlr H.J . Stewart, who captained Collegians for 10 years and was captain of their last premiership learn was in attendance . R~val rovers Clarrie Vontom (C.oII .) and Aiby Rodda (State Savusgi Bank) went on to be V'FL stars with St Kilda and kfellourat respectively. Victoria was succeasfizl in winning the first Australian Amatem Football Czrnicai, held in Adelaide while Ian Galbraith, the eaptair won the trophy for best and fairest player in the carnival . Victori beat South Australia 18.7 to 16 .4 in die final game. Odle participating states were Tasmania, New South Wales ary Western Australia.

Some other highlighL5 of the season : Old Scotch missed the four after 14 successive years in the final, Elsternwick 'A' saluted the retirement of their captain, Char} Loughrey after 200 games, who started with St Ignatius in 1934 and transferri 1936 when the Saints disbanded was written u showed his skill again and was the star of the eL

youngster has kicked 40 goals to date! 'MM' won ivanlra and fairest in this year. Ivanhoe "B" went through the home and home games undefeat and then won both finals, making it 20 consecutive wins . Prominent in Geelongs "A째 Section semi final team was Clem Gods. (In the 60s and 70s Clem as Town Clerk of Brighton an great help to VAFA - NR) . Smallest player in the finals was FTSOB's rover Eric Gates, E and 9 stone 8I6 . Forthe second year in succession "A" section best and fairest i won by Geelong rover Lindsay Hassett . Lindsay went on to capl the Australian Test XI, being one of the most stylish batsman to play for Austrra]ia. Playing for Coburg in "D" Section grand final was 22 year old Brown. (Bill's career extended to 1950's and as late as 1979, was an interstate selector - i'R) . Some of the coaches were Bill Twomey Sir (O.Mclb), Brushfield (Geelong), Hughie Dunbar (Ormond), "Ji gy' H, {Ivanhoe), Vic Belcher (Brunswick), Gerry Donnelly WSOB) Cubbins (E'wiek), all former league stars . _. . . . . ~ al Review There was no fairytale to be seen in the D3 decider, as the best side throughout the year, Fitzroy, continued the trend as they recorded a resounding win over the gallant Bentleigh. The Reds kicked with the aid of a solid wind the first quarter. Onballer Addicott was everywhere early for the Reds and with the dangerous Ronchi 'on song, the signs were ominous for the underdogs . Quarter time saw the Reds holding a solid lead but certainly not a matching winning one . Bentleigh started to get the machine into action during the second stanza. With league Best and Fairest Dave Martin living up to his nickname of "1`he Freak", Bentleigh were getting plenty of the ball but struggling to convert . This was partly influenced by the "Human Blanket" Todd Clake containing the dangerous Sharp. Just as it looked as if the Bentleigh boys were going to challenge, the Reds stepped up a gear. The midfield gained control, with Jackson, whilst only playing a cameo, extremely influential with his possessions . Rawlins and Mitchell were also exerting influence as their mixture of pace and height ere proving to be telling. A couple of late goals ultimately proved to shut the gate as Fitzroy went in with a big break at the main change. Once again Bentleigh started brightly with the likes of Henry and Sice working their way into the game . This is where the Reds cornerstone all year came into their own, namely the defence . Skipper Drury led the way, not only via his great acts of courage but also his wonderful poise Whilst the likes of Wharfe and Clarke

added i. .leir skill and experience to the battle . Lm_ ..: ttritIt out wanting to sound like a broken record, 4r'' t continued to star, playing what many ke :n j thought was one of best individual finals perform, seen in the VAFA for many a year. Despite the fa t the game was basically over. The Reds led b, is ; as 10 goals towards the end of quarter and givez at the Reds backline had only conceded an aver< five goals per game for the season, the result looke a foregone conclusion . Unfortunately for the large crowd in attendance, final quarter didn't bring much excitement, The Is continued to play in their typical professional n : : r, running hard to make position, supporting t o i mates, executing with great skill etc . A ll in all, a thoroughly well deserved victory for Graeme Burgen and his men . Bentieigh, whilst honest and gallant in defeat, were not up to the task but will no doubt take some solace in the second success-sive promotion since joining the VAFA .

Well done to both sides and here's hoping Mad Monday was incident f reel. In what was something of a fairytale , ,-as able to draw a way from the h 1v fancied reserves and record a memorable w' : . ~t w,, win number 12 in a row for the Districts and no doubt the celebrations went long into the night!

Beiersdori Australia Ltd Congratulations to Swinburne University on becoming the second team to gain promotion in D4 this season and join Syndal Tally Ho in what promises to be a fitting finale to the 2001 season .

Swinburne to four and were trailing by only 16 point s and appeared the LL~_ most likelv of the two sides .

Swinburne, like they have for the entire finals campaign, was able to fight against the odds and call on the great spirit around the club to defeat the favourites Rupertswood last Saturday .

However, as had been the trap for many tean before them, coming home with the hurricai was not going to be enough to get Rupo aero : the line . The dominance of Prior in the cent and some inspirational work by Luck( around the ground was proving difficult fi Rupertswood to counter, and with supren pressure in defence, Rupertswood, as thâ‚Ź have done previously this year, kickc themselves out of the match with seve behinds in the final quarter .

Review - Preliminary Final With a howling five-goal breeze favouring one end of the ground, it appeared as though the team that utilised it to the best advantage would be the most likely victor on the day . -ne was lucky enough to start with the breeze and came out with all guns blazing, kicking the first goal of the match within the first 30 seconds . Rupertstvood's Whitehead, a dominant force up forward this season destroyed the Razorbacks last time the two teams met, and Razorback coach, Adrian Fidler was well aware of his dangerous presence . Therefore, he took it on himself to play on the Rupo goal kicker and did so effectively keeping him well out of the play. Razorback "gun" forward, Murchie up the other end was also finding the going tough, being well covered by the Rupertswood defence . However, Swinburne's Morrison was able to play a good roving game to Murchie and contributed well as his side led by four goals at quarter time . The second quarter started slowly with Swinburne holding Rupertswood well to add to their lead to be up by 31 points 10 minutes into the quarter . However, Rupertswood then hit back hard . Rupo's Jordon was providing a handful for the Razorback defenders . After the barrage, the half time siren came as welcome relief as Rupertswood hit the front to go into the major break one point in front . The Rupo supporters who had made the trek from Sunbury had come to life and were providing plenty of inspiration going into the third quarter for Rupertswood . Rupo then continued on their good play and kicked a couple into the breeze while holding 49

At the other end of the ground, Swinburr were ensuring their ticket into D3 wit Morrison, Liston, Higgins and Hamiltc providing plenty of opportunities, and whe Jones and Luckey kicked truly at the 2 minute mark the match was effectively over. In the reserves Preliminary Final, Nort Brunswick, as expected proved it experienced for a determined Bulleen Cobt side as they ran out 23-point winners to s up a showdown with Syndal in the D Reserves Grand Final .

GRANI) i It is now down to two teams, the favourite Syndal Tally Ho, a team that lost only or match for the entire season, and the dar horses, S"nbaa â‚Ź;, who snuck into fifth spc with a win in the last game of the seasoi Both teams are in great form and it therefor promises to be an epic battle for the 200 premiership . The Syndal tall brigade have been a awesome combination this season and th Razorbacks will be hard pressed to have tli players to counter them . Therefore, it woul appear likely Swinny will have to take th match up to Syndal and attempt to use the' running game to counter the Synd~ dominance . It will be a battle of the forwards with Syndal' vast array of goal kickers in Thompson, Rutte and Hannemann while Swinburne howeve have a few aces up their sleeves themselve -ruc nrt .enrc, ir, r_nnron, , cn nn,

;,ith Murchie, who has kicked 63 goals in 10 arnes, Morrison and Liston .

Ia, the previous two encounters between the Ltvo teams Syndal has handed out two beltings to the Razorbacks . However, if you delve further into the results, in one match, 5winburne were up at three quarter time but fell away in the last to allow Syndal a ten goal final quarter, so there is little doubt Swinburne can match it with them, and given their the teams rampant form, and that of goal kicking sensation Murchie, the underdogs could have their day out . My tipping in the seniors for the finals has been atrocious to say the least and I have to apologize to Syndal for giving them my "kiss of death" . The most impressive side of the season for their consistency and sheer class they will be very difficult to beat and should have the personnel to counter the Swinburne runners and to cut off supply to their in form for .rards . Therefore, I predict Syndal Tally Ho Lo take out the 2001 D4 premiership in a canter as they run out 32-point winners .

In the reserves I believe that while North _;_-uraswiok are without doubt - the most however, it equipped team to take on : would be a very brave man to tip against this class outfit . I think the boys from Syndal will be primed to be part of the celebrations with their senior counterparts and will bring home the double with a 14-point victory . Let me conclude by saying it has been a great pleasure writing for the D4 section this season and I have thoroughly enjoyed chatting with you all on game days and at other times throughout the season . Good luck to the Syndal and Swinburne with their promotion into D3, and I look forward to our new entrants next year in UHSOB and Albert Park . Finally, just a quick note in regard to all that has happened in the USA over the past two weeks . It has really put football into perspective and has made me realise that we should be very thankful for this grcat competition and country that we are all a part of, so until next season, keep safe and see you in 2002 .

v i :~/i & Blue) Spo ,s & Aic Supplie s Review SECTI ON i - Preliminary Fina l The sun was out and the wind was up on Preliminary Final day . St . Bernard's won the toss and Captain Courageous had no hesitation in kicking with it . The wind-goal ratio was approximately 4 and after five minutes I was wondering whether this was correct . St . Bernard's opening goal resulted from a fantastic Legudi tackle . All of a sudden goals became aplenty with St . Bernard's leading Old Scotch by l4pts at quarter time . Second quarter was a torrid affair with both teams being very aggressive at the ball and at halftime, St . Bernard's still led by 4pts . After the main break, Hosking was the loose man across the half back line . St . Bernard's began well and by the 20-minute mark, led by 27pts . Bouzikas, Burns and Elliott were providing plenty of ball for the dangerous Neeson and Legudi to goal . Old Scotch needed'an avenue and it was the Captain who stood tall to kick three late goals from marks that brought the deficit back to only 9pts . The last quarter saw Whispers move Quail to the forward line, which resulted in two terrific goals . Barnett continued getting his hand on the ball first, which in turn allowed Josephs, Lewis and Colman first use of the ball also . In the end, it was a fantastic pressure match with the Cardinals just by 3pts . A sensational team effort! SECT I ON 2 PRELIMINARY FINAL - Webee v Old Ivanhoe Werribee set up a rematch with Caulfield Grammarians and in the process ended Old Ivanhoe's season, when they defeated the Hoes by 14 points in a very entertaining preliminary final . Old Ivanhoe controlled the early passages of play and went to the first break leading by seven points . The Bees cut this to four points at the long break and as the second half got underway the match was most certainly in the balance . Three goals to one in the third quarter gave Werribee a 10point buffer heading into the last term and they would have blown the Hoes away if not for some wasteful kicking at goal, which yielded 2 .6 . Eisenburg, Hoffman, J .Russo,

(U 19/2 & F?ed'i

McGowan, and Yasser were ai .)j„the be< players fo r the winners, ..hile Ciw : .e, Curatolo, : — and Chivell were impressive contributors o: Old Ivanhoe . SECTION (2) BLUE - 8

1 - Grand Hinal team that wE,, on top of the ladder for of the year (p ved one final and won easily b ; Ls), come up agains t ers 'never -die' Cardinals . I agree that Manni sa ; > about Old Scotch - thi s oozes cha : acter. My question is , her Old Scotch can go the distance st this very accc " hed Xavs unit? I f go back to the last time :hey pla4ed, the .age was C i?Q minutes of poor .all in it-- fourth quarters . I 11eve that this g: ° will be a lot closer than eir last . I have bcen analyzing both teams . .id on paper, they match up extremely well, match winners in each zone . If you loo k Old Scotch's forward line, they boast the Ii'_es of Cations, Rodski, Watts & Hosking . hforward quartet has kicked -1~proximately 175 goals! Their on-balling

i=. :~ion with Josephs, Lewis, Philalay an d is both tough and exciting and thei r .rise led by Quail and Prendergast is very olid . But the most impressive characteristic aot :f this team, apart from their coach (!) i s i'at 'iey never give up . If you then cast your -e ( ver Old Xaverians and look at their ard line, they boast the leading and mos t _ressive forward in O'Donnell who has hooted 68 goals in Section 1 football . There r~re no other goal kickers in the top five, yet tey are the leading point scorer in the ompetition and lead Old Scotch by 382pts on average per game 21 .22pts) . Why? The eason being is they run in numbers an d re the ball around . If O'Donnell doesn't you, then Lopresti, Quinn, Biddlecombe die will! Their on-balling division le d . Captain 'daring' Dixon, are very physica l i d c :plosive . Their back third led by Ross & 'aan is inventive and creates a lot of run . now the stage is set . Questions could be ; I Ross take Rodski and Quail take

O'Donnell? For me the answer lies between CHF and CHB! Barnett in the middle for Old Scotch will need to give his on-ballers first use if they are to win this . Rodski and Hosking will need to provide marking options in this zone throughout the entire game, if they are to win this . My answer - they won't - Xavs by l4pts . SECT Id N .

Caulfield G , -i

After enjoying the week off, Caulfield will be primed to take on Werribee at the Trevor Barker Oval in what shapes as a classic grand final . Caulfield will be full of confidence after defeating the Bees by 31 points in the second semi-final, when Browne, Foster and Napier ran riot . The Bees, however, will have benefited from the tough slog against Old Ivanhoe in the preliminary final and will be battle hardened for the big clash . Caulfield surprised everyone by Nvinning straight through to the big one but it will be no shock if they take the flag on Saturday, although the match is a real toss of the coin affair. The week's rest may just get Caulfield over the line .
