d01 !US HJ1 NEWSPAPER S In an attempt to present a better results service in Sunday's and Monday's Age and Herald-Sun we will be attempting this week to obtain all senior section finals Q!Q scores. goalkickers and best players (both sides) . To do this we will require the WINNING SIDE to very quickly obtain these details through to the VAFA .
We stopped trying to do this about 6 or 7 years ago as to get both teams to co-operate in the after-match emotion of a win or a loss proved too difficult and we had no hope of meeting the newspaper deadlines . her Brett Conne ll or myself will have contacted all senior and U 19 clubs asking if they win to provide this to us as soon as possible after the game . We will not be able to provide all details for Reserves Sections and only final scores will appear . I appeal to the secretaries of winning clubs to assist us his weekend to in giving the maximum exposure possible for VAFA matches .
Gur?,~~.ra :E 0~ _'E_'__'Y :~C : FEE S n response to many queries about entry fees, charges for all A to C finals are $8 per person and Dl-D4 finals are $6 per person . Entry fees are charged for Under 19 ~rand finals only ($6) . Pensioners and children under '16 years are admitted free, upon proof . Gate staff at all venues (except Elsternwick Park) cease diarging at the end of the half time breaks, and at [:lstcrnwick Park charging ceases at the 10 minute j; ;-irk of the third quarter.
Individual Elsternwick Park seri es tickets and/or family tickets can be applied for - fax 9531 2050 . hese tickets provide excellent value if purchaser s ~: u c nd all remaining days of their particular section, hut including other matches in their section but not uw,olving their team . This deal would also allow entry ior other section's matches played at Elsternwick Park .
Please refer to the two-page display elsewhere i today s "Amateur Footballer" where the seven winners of this award are announced . Well done to MARCELLI N MtAZENOD, COLLEGIANS, MENTONE AMATEURS,' FITZROY REDS, RICHMOND CENTRAL and MT . LILYDALE - all $1,000 riche r Duty Officers (VAFA) and VAFA umpires (field, boundary and goal), have been asked to be nundful of rules applying to too many officials around or on the bench and water-carriers, trainers and runners not leaving the field immediately their tasks have been completed . Clubs need to understand that free kicks can be paid or on-field officials ordered-off without being replaced (for balance of that quarter) for these violations . Venues and clubs abusing VAFA alcohol rules . VAFA clubs visiting non-VAFA venues for finals are risking heavy (and automatic) fines shoul d they frequent social clubs where alcohol is served during the playing of matches . This behaviour also puts at risk these venues being offered future VAFA finals . Open social clubs are for the use of that particular club's members ONLY .
At least three clubs have been written to, who have had observed club people drifting into social clubs during the dav. Rumours have abounded about the future of Old Mentonians Footba ll Club . Delighted to have had confirmed by key officials that the Panther s prowl into 2003 and well beyond . Great news .
V11e 1€dERS - CARLTON CLUB INITIATIVE $11,900 prizes

THF Atv1ATEUR FOOTBALLER E
The second favourite was bundled out last week,
opening the door for the chaps from McKinnon. NOBs may yet get under mine and the bookies ' guard. REVIEW From all reports, it was a magnificent day weatherwise at the home of footy, EP, where the cut throat first semi final battle lines were drawn, and it was NOBs who were far too good for Mazenod when they prevailed by 21 pts . NOBs blasted out of the blocks in first qtr by slamming on 7 goals to 3, left their opponents reeling, and held a 23 pt lead . To their credit, after copping an earful on North West FM from yours truly regarding their waywardness in front of goal, NOBs had their kicking shoes on in this stanza. The second term was an even affair, with neither side being able to convert to their many chances . 4 .5 to 3 .6 in favour of NOBs indicate that the contest was fierce, with pressure aplenty . NOBs had their chances to pull away and similarly, Mazenod had their opportunity to peg back their opponents' lead . However it was not to be and NOBs held a commanding 28 pt lead at the main change . One would have expected Mazcnod to come out all guns blazing in the third term, but in fact it was NOBs who fired all the shots, booting the first 2 goals to go to an unassailable 40 pt lead . The fat lady was called to the balcony at EP, and she sung, and sung and sung . "NOBs are home" she cried . However, Mazenod were not to be denied, booting 4 goals to I for the remainder of the qtr to give themselves a chance going into the last term, facing a 20 pt deficit . It was obvious that the folk from Mazenod were insulted by that fat lady, and promptly gave her the 2 fingered salute as they went ape droppings . They kicked the next 4 goals straight to go to a 2 pt lead at the 8 minute mark of the last qtr, and those who took the short odds on NOBs at half time were feeling very queasy, and heading for the front bar at the Elsternwick Hotel . However, the catch up footy took its toll on the boys from the east, as NOBs steadied, and booted the next 3 goals to win comfortably in the end . The big man Barker (4 goals) was tremendous for NOBs, giving them a target to aim for in the forward line, with Sanders and Collison feeding him throughout the day . Mrs Fuller's boys toiled manfully for Mazenod for the whole day and McIntyre and Murray earned their beers as well .
NOBS won the toss and kicked with th e breeze, and after an I entertaining firs t quarter the scores were level . The second sa~,, take control of the game with 8 goals to 3, and made it very difficult for NOBS . NOBs had a real in the 3rd term to make a game of it, but in the quarter, OH steadied to take out the ga comfortably by 24 pis Big "Foo" kicked 5 for OH, was well supported by Lay and Ross . Be contributors for NOBs were Roache, Nulty Bryer. PREVIEW This is the heavyweight battle that we've t waiting for, as Old Melbunaiaras (1/2) line against Old Haileybury (6/4) . The battle of the t Erwin Leyden and his entire club have had their on this day since Preliminary Final day in 21 With the recruits they have bagged and the s base from last year's near sniss . OMs have been competition trendsetters from the start, clair scalps left, right and centre. Holme in the ruck been feeding the on ballers led by Hazell and & who have constantly fed their forwards, and a rel to form in Rd 18 of Mulligan sends an omir warning to any opponent . In saying that, Mick Dwyer has given his lads a Cummings type preparation . The lead up form been solid without being spActaeular, peaking a

right time of the year, and they just kept winning . nd yes, I'm happy to admit they've got .under my guard . O'Farrell would have to go close to being the recruiting coup of the year, and he might just be the diffi ience between victory and defeat . And the half back line of White . I'm so tempted to tip OH, and if he thought I would do so, I'm sure Mick would send me to Tahiti to convince me otherwise . The results are on the board, and the scalps have been huge . However, I believe that OMs have had their focus solely on this day to return to A Section . After the happenings of a couple of years ago, a lot of supporters would feel that ]i 've done their time and now it's pay day . I agree, <uid O;vls will march on to the GF and A Section in `? ()03 with a 4 pt win, so get your heart pills out fo r .•- stopping game! !
Old ,Ib (215) vs Old Paradians (7/4) OP by 6 pts This game could very well be decided on the qualification of senior players from the Bundoora camp, and on that basis, they have the chance to een charge straight into the Big One with a win today, upi and a fortnight off so some of the boys can go to the ~ils. track!! e- P NI

To the victors go the spoils . Congratulations to all associated with Whitefriars for your professional performance on Saturday and over the entire season. To rebound from the despair of relegation and bounce back within 12 months shows what tremendous character abounds within the club. To all associated with the club congratulations on your promotion. Just one hurdle to jump now. St Bedes bqentone-Tigers live to fight another day, will be a tough week for Ba rney and the players, but you don't finish on top of the ladderfor no reason and they will bounce back . The Grammarians quietly and efficiently advance to the next Round, and we say goodbye to Beaumaris who have had a year totally dominated by injuries to key players. They have blooded some young ones and will bounce back . REVIEW - FIRST SEMI FINAL Caulfield Grammarians an d Beaumaris met in this evenly matched elimination battle. Beaumaris started the game well with it's height across each line causing serious concern for Dean Anderson and his panel . By the first change the Sharks had opened up a handy lead and appeared to have the Fields measure. By the start of the second the midfielders of Beaumaris were well on top setting up countless opportunities for their fonvards to capitalize . After a 4 goal to 3 quarter Beauy went into the main change with a handy lead and the contest was in their grasp . As so often can be the case the third quarter the championship quarter can so often decide a game and this one was no exception . The Sharks attacked for the first 10 minutes but could not trouble the scorer The Fields then sprung into action and ran riot to slam home 6 goals to 1, in a great exhibition of running and intense finals football, to turn the game around in their favour with an 18 poin t

buffer at the final stage . The last quarter was an extremely tight affair with Beaumari s attacking incessantly and with 4 minutes to go there was only 10 points in it an the Sharks were still a chance . Their next shot hit the po: that did not help their cause, but to Caulfield's credit the defenders stood tall to help record a great victory and lh to fight another day . A disappointing end to a tough seaso for the Sharks. Willsy led and presented well up forward along with Del, down back, Knighta and Ice both provided much neede run from defense for the Fields, and for Beauy Luke Hea competed well all day Cuz Marcus Lee was good a sJohn oH ltandMickMatulick, andMarkEnsorplayc his best game of the year. In the Ressies it was a tough hard fought contest all ds with the Fields just doing enough especially in the la quarter to keep the Two Blues at bay . Sash Krien . Stetii Sant and Super McAssey were all good for the Fields, an the Two Blues were well served by Danny Decartere Cameron Morgan and Windbridge .
SECOND SEMI FINA L
A scoreline of 1 all in the home and away season made f~ an enthralling contest at Sandringham on Saturd~ between St . Bedes Mentone Tigers an d Whitefriars. As expected it was tough going early as both teams suss( each other out, with neither side wanting to concede 2 inch as the lead see sawed. Rob Pasqualotto would ha, had 10 possessions as he tried hard to give his runna players first use of the ball. A late snap from David Crea sa the Friars trial by the barest margin at the first change . The second quarter continued in a similar vein with neith, side able to gain a clear ascendancy, to me though tl Friars seemed slicker with their movements and had ma of a structure . Buckets was being well covered at his end I a couple of opponents and Richie Pawlik, Luke Swain we keeping Luke Wintle and Co quiet at the other end . Je Anderson brilliantly crumbed a couple of goals to see it Whitefriars unit 2 points to the better at the long interval Rob Pasqualotto's dominance soon was taking it's effect < the likes of Anthony Carbone, Ben Janson and Matt Pow started to win more of the ball sending it forward whe Swooper Northey was now providing a different avenue attack, as this dominance started to show on tl scoreboard . Ando was now proving to be a distin nuisance to the Tigers cause and another couple so( made it 6 for the term to the Tigers zip who went to tl three quarter time huddle with their heads bowed . The Friars kicked the first of the last to put the gan almost beyond the Tigers grasp . None the less they did ; forward through a run at all costs plan of attack to kick couple of goals and put a bit of pressure on Whitefriars wl may have taken the foot off the peddle a bit . But Ando's 6 1 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2N
twin ended any further resistance as the Whitefriars walked away with a comprehensive victory, promotion to B-Grade and another crack at a premiership . A disappointed Tiger unit with shattered confidence have a week to get back to their early season form , The Friars had many good players with Anderson . Langford, Carbone and Janson among the better ones . Sam Hecker, Adam L'Huillier and Timmy Beasley and little Scafidi stood up all day for the Tigers, with much help needed from their struggling team mates . The Ressies saw Old Camberwell be the first to advance to the Grand Final and a shot at the premiership . Another close tussle in the first half, until the Wellers blew it apart in the third, and while the Friars came back hard in the last the damage was done and the horse had bolted . Garth Rowe was BOG with a fine game in the backline, supported by Anthony Hardenberg, Marcus Scott and Naysan Saffar. Whitefriars had good players in Chris Dance, Zane Webb, Danvan Brice and Andrew Glenn . P D]VlE W y d And now it all comes down to this the Preliminary Final, one y last chance for both sides to have a crack on the promotion s to B-Grade that comes at the end of today's battle . If you di read through the Tigers form guide over the last 6 weeks it does not really read that well only a come from behind victory against the Wells on the positive side of the ledger . y it There is no doubt they are down on confidence and some of them are not attacking the ball as hard as they were early y d in the season. The Fields on the other hand have been pretty good only stumbling to the inform Glen Eira . t, A game of contrasts the more physical style of game of the Ti,,ers against the fast running attacking game of the Fields . t:e have one side full of confidence, and the other one r struggling a bit . Again the big man battle between Timmy Beasley and Andrew Sorensen will have a fair influence on the result of this game. Have the utmost respect for Barney and the Tigers and they probably deserve to win, they need more up forward which could be hard as the Fields defenders are the springboard of their attack . So in one of my upset selections going on a hunch again I'm tipping the Grammarians to win and return to Btion and a crack at Whitefriars in the OF . T Anoiiter close encounter in the Ressies should start the off on a high note . Two fast running sides contesting t:~i, one . The influx of a couple of Senior players will help y the Friars cause and should be enough to get them over the line and join their mates in the Big One . e B& F SELECTION; Very hard to pick a winner here not 'j ,%,ing seen too much . But it could come from Matt Power, 'ndrew Sorensen, Luke Browne, Mouse Wintle . Matt .~icCraw or a roughie Big Dave Williams from Banyule . 2n d SEMIS -,-t . Gillen Oval provide top surface for the Saturday games, well grassed 'a tad firm . The cather was almost ideal, mostly sunny, with aqtight breeze favouring the eastern end. The kicked to the eastern end and for the first t«wnty auuutes the ball ricocheted between the two half bai k lines and yielded only I goal from 4 scoring shots. Then the drought broke, and for the rest of the match points were amassed at a rate more in keeping ;vith the two side' talents . By half tin-ie the Vultures lead by only 2 points, but the feeling among the spectators was that they were looking more composed than the Animals. This was borne out in 93 as the run of play began to favour Mentone though vAthout them being able to achieve a significant breakaway, but their running players were clearly troubling St Leos . Q4 was sensational as the two teams tit for tatted right up to the final siren, and the Vultures were able to withstand every challenge the Animals mounted . Chris O'Meara was just sensational, Matthew Sullivan, David Perrin, Robert Gallagher, Simon Fanning, & Mick Sullivan weren't far behind, plus the Barr Bros were very damaging runners for Mentone . St Leos best included Paul Ristevski & Tim McCann in defence, Brendan Vaughan in attack, with the ball carriers Andre Burgess, Jason Fenn-", Guy Donovan, Don Dini, and Nick Hodder all prominent. r-ot : h flues out defended University Blacks after kicking a 3 goals winning break in the first 10 minutes . From then on being a forward for either team was a hazardous occupation. The Ashers win was in keeping with the H & A dominance of the competition they h .~ shorrn all year.
1St SEMIS - University B~_.c_ :s were harried to defeat by a relentless Aquinas . The Bloods reminded me of the way the dour, professional Romans did in the devil may care Celts back in the days of Julius Caesar and Vercingetorix . Blacks were the front-runners throughout the first half, but it was obvious the pressure applied by Aquinas was unsettling and the latter inched past them towards the end of g3 . The Bloods continued the pressure into Q4 causing the 16
Blacks' to continue m a k i n g uncharacteristic mistakes, while the Aquinas sharp enders piled on 7 majors . The Bloods success was due to a huge team effort, but John Jess, Daniel Den Braber, Glen Whitehead, Greg Evans, & Sean Flynn all stood out for their consistent performance of the one percenters. Blacks best was their mobile squad of James Green, Rob Dillon, Luke Nethercote, Andrew Costello, and Chris Schilling, on a day on which little went rit;ilt.
rcarne a slow lst half against St Leos take the points in a very exciting finish by 11 points . The Jackas had terrific efforts from ruckman, Adrian Lewin, small men, Michael Konskv & David Kalb, Asher Cooper up forward, and Szkolnik and Elliott Janover hr defence. And a special mention to Bronson P.ittermaza (Jackas) & Tim 'Kilos' Batty (St Leos) for resisting the temptation to boot the ball into the eastern end backyards from close in shots, thus s_:ving Du :, Officer Bruce Ivey from yet more ball retri?vir?n iourn€ :s!

The Bloods will conic into this match in their favourite position as underdogs, in which they are at their most dangerous . Statistically there's not much between the two attacks, but in defence over the vear the Bloods have had 21% more points scored against them . The question is, can the Animals' defenders apply sufficient pressure today to shut out the opposition fon.vards? At the other end the St Leo's forwards continue to be in great form, and Brendan Vaughan's effort last week was superb . The all important battle of the engine rooms will decide the match and both teams of on-ballers and midfielders are in top form : it isn't often spectator's get to see players like Den Braber, Flynn, Mhitehead, and Lorkin for Aquinas, competing and against the likes of Manton, Donovan, Fennell, & Burgess . After what should be an enthralling contest . I think the Bloods will squeak into the GF by a kick! And yes, I should be certified!

The second 'A' semi was over at half time . After an even first term, OX kicked 9 .4 to 0 .1 to lead by 48 points and even though Old Scotch narrowly won the second half, keen judges thought that OX would win the flag, and the G .F. would be against Old Scotch who would be too good for Old Haileybury . Best were Simon Wood, Andrew Dillon, Brushfield (OX) and Rohan Price, Collins, Nettleton (Old S.). In control all day, Old Brighton defeated MHSOB 15 .14 (104) to 10 .12 (72) to win its way back to 'A' section . Best were Farrell, Demlis, Kent, Williams (Old B .) and Pertzel, Helmet, Cassell, Bruce (MHSOB) . The 'C' P.F. was always going to be close . One game a piece each, and both teams in fine form . How would Marcellin contain St Bedes Mentone skipper Tony Macgeorge who during the week had won 'C' section B & F, and the Goalkicker Award with 101 goals, the top goals for the competition. Keep him quiet Marcellin did. The game was close all day, MOC leading by 8 points at the last change . The elusive Karavasilis kicked his fifth, Treganowan got one, and the Eagles led by 19 points, and time slipping away. The Tigers were not done . They got 2 goals and then a point was rushed to leave them ONE goal down . The Tigers' captain marked a pass just inside 50, close to the boundary, and the SIREN went . Tension, Silence, the kick went wide, and MOC were into 'B' section and the 'C' grand final . Final scores, 16.14 (110) to 15 .14 (104). Best were Seabury, Cox, Karavasilio, O'Flynn (MOC) . The fnats started in glorious spring weather last weekend and the matches were just as intriguing as the start to September.
1ST SE R . : . : o BENTLEIGad V I.,_~'IROB E The premiership race is down to three after La Trobe finished Bentleigh's season with a hard fought eight point win. In a game where the biggest margin got to only 16 points, it was the B's wasted opportunities that cost them a spot in the Preliminary final . They dominated the midfield -,vith Franky Dimattina and captain Eyles collecting many hard ball gets and sending their side deep into attack . But their turn over rate was just as high and allowed University to stay alive . The Trober's converted better which proved the difference . Center half back Daniel Gleeson played a terrific game kicking three goals and taking a number of telling marks at crucial moments, while up forward Farrant too was in spectacular form and bagged four. Bentleigh switched star player Dave Martin from attack to defence in an attempt to curb his influence . The two high-flyers had a terrific battle with the Trobers key position player taking the honours. University ruckman Ash Cummings who had missed the past month through injury was also important playing a pinch-hitting role off the bench . His presence and evergreen legs were instrumental in the result . Bentleigh's goal scoring machine Chris Sharp played well booting eight goals including six in the first half and taking his season tally to 87 . La Trobe were forced to move key midfielder Josh Levy on him in the second half, a decision that kept the leading goal-kicker to just two more for the day . Overall the game was a terrific contest played in great spirit and sportsmanship . The commitment showed by both teams was fitting of their position on the ladder . In the end it was Far-rant who sealed the game winning a fifty fifty contest and kicking truly on his opposite foot . The Trober's seem to have the winning feeling at the moment and are a hard team to stop on the big grounds . SECOND SEMI-FINAL : YARRA VALLEY V SALESIA N Yarra Valley secured a spot in the 2002 Grand Final and promotion into DI after defeating Salesian by 27 26
points in an enthralling contest . In a highly
competitive game , Salesian took the battle right up to the Premiership favourite . As expected the cat and mouse from the last game were forgotten as both sides got down to business. Salesian matched Yarra Valley in most areas including the scoreboard with 29 scoring shots to 22, the closest any side has got to the Bushrangers in some time . Salesian's analysis during the past month paid dividends early, with Thain on target kicking five goals, and Andrew Campbell in the ruck and Iva, Bobetic also instrumental. A 20 minute lapse towards the end of the firsi quarter and mid way into the second proved costl} for Salesian . It gave the Bushrangers midfield < chance to exert their dominance with Peake, Ulf Drew brothers and Valoppi getting plenty of touches And it was their trademark that has seen them wii well all year, running the ball forward in number : and opening up numerous goal scoring options This week was no different with Keem, B Peake Stone and Crowe all being multiple goal kickers . The Bushrangers can now enjoy the week off as the prepare for their tilt at the flag . while Salesian need to regroup for its match against La Trobe .
PRELIMINARY FINAL PRE V IEW: BAI.ESLA+t V LA TROBE UNIVERSIT Y
The Preliminary final will see La Trobe's youth ani enthusiasm battle against the experience and migh of Salesian . In what's sure to be an entertainin match with the final place in the Grand Final ari promotion into DI being up for grabs . University will welcome the return of full back Nic : Rosengren after he completed Geologists duties u Sweden. Rosengren will fly in later this week an . will add strength to the Trober's spine and alon with Cummings much needed height . In the Salesian camp things are being kept very loi key in their build up . Ranks have been closed, wit club hierarchy electing to concentrate on winning i an attempt to get through to the Grand Final an have another crack at the Bushrangers . Big gull Campbell and Ivan Bobetic fired last week and di team proved they are a contender .
The jury on a result is still out with both te . In roun ashringwpectsaon dTHEAMATEURFO TBAL ER2C(
Salesian won a close one by 11 points however in the return match at University's home ground it was the Trobers who prevailed in fine style kicking nine goals in the first quarter to eventually win by 34 points . La Trobe is a side full of confidence and one that knows how to win . They have a terrific record and have stretched its winning streak to eight out of its last nine games, with the only loss being to Yarra Valley. In comparison Salesian has been inconsistent but showed good form in almost beating the Bushangers last week . Although Salesian finished second on the ladder and are playing competitive football, my tip is La Trobe to win in a fast and hard running encounter . Farrant, White and Gleeson will carry their good form into the match and get the Trober's over the line by 17 points .
RESERVES : FITZROY REDS V PENINSULA The Reds were beaten last week and must bounce back against Peninsula . For the Pirates Krohn was on target with five goals and with the support of Bonner and McKinstry contributed in their win . This should give them a good launching pad to contest against the minor premiers . But with Fitzroy's wake up call last Saturday they will be out to win and get another crack at the Bushrangers - Reds by 25 points .

THE VAFAUA would like to thank all
their Sponsors for the 2002 VAFA Season and hope we can continue into 2003 and beyond , Sportscover, Schweppes, Personal Mortgage Managers, Melbourne Sports Books . Print Mint and Complete Freight Concepts.
Congratulations also go to Neil Woods A Section boundary umpire who got married a couple of weeks ago in London, We believe Woodsy will be back from his honeymoon just in time to umpire the A Section Grand Final on Sunday 22nd of September. Well Done Bob Seymour who last weekend goal umpired his 700th game of football, What a great effort Bob ! Apology to Peter Teasdale as he was left out of last week's column when we told you about the umpiring experience at Leah's 300th VAFA Game . Peter has umpired 500 games of football starting his umpiring career with the Southern Football League before crossing of to the VAFA a few years ago . The VAFAUA would like to send a BIG THANK YOU to David Parkin who was our guest speaker at the Annual Dinner on the 26th August . David left his ill mother's bedside to come to the MCG and meet his commitment with the VAFAUA . The 160 attendees were privileged to listen to the most informative talk about the passion for football of David Parkin . We would also like to follow up on the rumour that his son, Anthony has retired from playing football and thinking about taking up umpiring. We are looking for any retired player who wants to stay involved with footy to give umpiring a go . Just contact the VAFA and let us know you're interested because we are definitely interested in having more ex-players join our ranks! Anyone interested in coming to the VAFAUA A Section Grand Finai Branch can contact mark Jenkins or Peter Simpson . The cost is $30 that includes your entry in to Elsternwick Park, an "Amateur Footballer", a great meal and guest speaker and your chance to win the $500 door prize . Last year saw more than 140 people attend so book your ticket early to ensure you get a seat . A couple of weeks ago we saw Brian Woodhead turn up to training who has actually been umpiring this year in the VAFA after coming back from Sydney where he was running Sportscover for the past 5 years .A'oody as everyone knows him has been umpiring for around 30 years as he started when he was 14 . Brian was an Adviser at the VAFAUA from 1989 to 1991 . woody has been umpiring in Sydney over the past few years and has umpired several Grand Finals in the Sydney Football League. He said the reason he has kept umpiring while living and working in Sydney was because they use the three-umpire system in most games, so it didn't take as long to recover from week to week . Brian has also umpired in the old
VFL between the years of 1982 an d 1987 . He has also worked in the VAFA office as an administration officer from 1993 to 1996 before taking a job with Sportscover. Woody still enjoys being involved with the VAFAUA as he is now running with younger umpires (including his son Brent) and helping them out on match days . It was good to see him down at training and we hope to see him around again next season . On Friday 27th September, the VAFAUA is holding its Presentation Night Cocktail Party at the Crown Casino. The night starts at 7 .30pm and should end at around 10 .30pm . The night will be followed by an evening on the card tables or you can head upstairs to the night clubs. The cost is $50 (food and drinks included) for a single and $90 for a double . Anyone interested in coming can talk to Mark Jenkins at training .
Welcome back Matt Cox who has just recently arrived back home after an overseas trip with his girlfriend . As we welcome one back we say farewell to Men, Monty who has gone away this week with his wife . Albie Firley is probably having a great time in the Greek Islands during the Finals series. We believe the President is getting ready to go to Europe around September 18. How far must the ball travel for it to be awarded a mark (VAFA Rule)? Is it (A) 5, (B) 10, (C) 15, (D) Any distance. Last week's winner is Peter Teasdale of the VAFAUA, please contact Karen at the VAFA to collect your prize . Last week's answer: 4 players from each team are permitted in the centre square for a bounce after a goal or the start of a quarter . °__- _•----- -~ ----__ - --. . .. . _ . TN MOT /r-_!, S ~1i;_?f ` 1 ; : DAVID Parkin delivered one of his outstanding speeches at the VAFA Umpires' Association dinner at the MCC Members' Main Dining Room a fortnight ago . The Melbourne High old boy, Hawthorn premiership captain and coach, and Carlton premiership coach and Director of AFL Umpiring, spoke with passion and his low, rough, intense voice echoed throughout the room .
One Stop. --~`: :e &, ztrce . 0 DISC O SUPPORT: DISCOS are not normally the source of happy yarns with footballers but this is different . Discosource is not a nightclub but one of the state's big guns in stationery.
It sponsors Salesian, which is lining up in this weekend's D2 Preliminary Final at Central Reserve Waverley, and St Kevins in A grade . That's a big effort for one company and is worthy of support from the larger Amateur family . The connection for Discosource is its state manager is Salesian president and 200-gamer Andrew Seager and managing director Stephen Skehan is a Skev . Maybe De La could get a sponsorship too as Andrew clocked up a few seasons there too .
Parko talked about the issues of football tha t intertwine throughout the modern game . He talked about his son Anthony, who has just retired from old Trinity after playing with old Melburnians, how technology has made football work and not a hobby, and that today's players are suffering because all they have done is play sport all year round, to break into the AFL but then are worn out by the age of 20, for instance osteo pubis . Parkin believes rest and recovery is just as important in the players' preparation and that football is now more an "athletic game than a kicking the ball game" . The Hawthorn Football Manager spoke about umpiring issues, including the difficulties of recruiting, and then received a standing ovation when he ended with : "Thank you on behalf of football for the magnificent thing you do" .

.7-7TGI WA S a little disappointed with your article in last week's FTLOTG "Sad drop for Monds" regarding district sides in C grade for 2003. Firstly, apart from Ormond and Beaumaris, there are two other district sides in C grade in Glen Eira and Prahran. We also have Mentone coming up into C grade in 2003 totalling five . As for facilities, have you been to Beaumaris and Ormond? They are pretty good . Prahran has the VFA ground in Orrong Rd . Hampton Rovers have great new facilities . Glen Eira has a multi million-dollar complex which outshines most VAFA clubs, including state-of-the-art change rooms, umpires change rooms - one for field umpires, one for remaining umpires and one for female umpires .
District clubs have a lot of local support . On two occasions this year Glen Eira provided scoreboard attendants for the opposing old boys clubs . You say the facilities at schoolboys clubs are far superior.
You should have a look at them in C grade . Come on down to Glen Eira in 2003 and have a bit of good old district club hospitality where our players often stay till closing time. Hopefully, you will take up my invitation, cheers Rod D'Ziiva - Glen Etta *letter edited for space .
Ed: Thanks Rod for adding to the story . The point of the article was in sympathy of the demise of district clubs from A and B sections . I wrote that it "seems the old boys network and

facilities have it over the local footy club". I've heard thi s regularly hinted at in the UAFA even by Ormond people . O Zq' ----a . PETER HUTCHINSO N

SE M I-FINAI. REVIE W Last Saturday's second semi-final between St . John's OC an d Hawthorn certainly lived up to many people's expectations as far as physicality goes. Almost from the get go it was a good, clean, hard contest, with a few scuffles here and there, but nothing untoward for finals footy . The first quarter was a goal for goal affair with Chris Horbury snagging two for the JOCs and Hawks favourite Jackomos getting a few touches (and touched up) . JOCs finished at quarter time with a narrow with Waters and Scott Hilton among the better players for JOCs and Paterson and Chris Reed doing well for the Hawks . Hawthorn asserted themselves more strongly in the second stanza, with Dan Lauletta starting to impose himself. Stuart Avery also got a good goal from the forward pocket on a tight angle, and Paterson continued his good work . For the JOCs, Horbury again snared two goals, and teammates Emery, Walker, Holmes and Besley were useful contributors, while Scott Hilton was great again . The Hawks really strengthened their claims in the third, with players like Carle and Saulle starting to make their mark, while M . Jones took a few handy marks in the JOCs defence . A high scoring last term for both teams with Stuart Avery opening the scoring for Hawthorn within seconds, and Lauletta continued to get more goals . Hawthorn started to pile it on, before JOCs gradually stemmed the tide, thanks again to Scott Hilton . In the end, Hawthorn recorded a "comfortable" four goal win to clinch a Grand Final berth and promotion to D2 . Congratulations to Hawthorn and good luck next week, and in D2 next season. Unfortunately, I wasn't at Sundays game between West Brunswick and Elsternwick, as I was watching my mate Joel Soft star for Murray Kangaroos against Willy . However, it was West Brunswick who prevailed on the day, and must now play St. John's OC for a Grand Final spot next week . Elsternwick, despite their defeat, should be satisfied .with their overall finish compared with what many people must have expected of them . Their upward momentum can only be encouraging for next season . Again, a reminder to send in nominations (if you
haven't done so already) for the D3 Team
Of The Year. Naturally, we would love to hear from each and every club (we've only heard from about half so far), and we don't want any excuses about soand-so not getting a mention, so contact us ASAP! The team will be announced in the Grand Final edition of the D3 report, therefore only one week left, so hurry!
PRELI M INARY FINAL PRE VIE W I anticipate that Saturday's Preliminary Final at Weatherall Road between St . John's OC and West Brunswick will be quite an arm wrestle, both metaphorically and literally . Whoever loses could certainly be considered unlucky, but the winner (and indeed the already promoted Hawthorn) would be no less deserving.
I expect there to be terrific duels all over the ground, but depending on how the teams line up on the day, the best contest to watch may well be between West Brunswick skipper Adam Cannane and the JOC's Scott Hilton . They may or may not play directly on each other, but watch for these guys to get a stack of the ball out of the middle . The key to either team's success may well be how much either of these players get the ball for their respective sides, and how well it is subsequently used . Expect JOCs captain Clint "Spider" Emery and the Magpies Rob West also to be influential in this context, as should JOC's Peter Walker, wherever he lines up. Another fact to note is that the most potent attack (St. JOC) is up against the stingiest defence (WB) . It will be interesting to see how the Magpie defence led by Sam Pietch and Richard Benjamin will handle the likes of A .Jones and the dangerous Chris Horbury . Up the other end, it is vital for the "bianc et noir's" Steve Benjamin to be in top goalkieking form as the JOC's defence isn't too shabby either, and the Pies seem to struggle to match them for forward firepower . Players like M . Jones, Holmes and Besley did good things at different parts of last week's game for the JOCS but will want to be in sync for the whole game this time around.
At the end of the day though, there must be a winner (whether I get it right is another thing entirely), and at the risk of putting the kiss of death on a fellow
southeastern club, I will be the JOCs by 25 points, their attack should do the job . Good luck to your club this weekend, and thanks to all who have sent us information . Any correspondence regarding social notes, milestones etc., can be given (ideally by 5pm Monday) to Peter via email on Peter.PS.Williamson@centrelink .gov.au or Ed via email on Ed .Sili@tocker.com It would be terrific to hear from every team, every week during the season. Have a great VAFA weekend! !

~ A.F.C. ( ~'- If VA.F.A, "Your Coaches' Association "
_~-- ~--~ Today we continue our focus on U19 football for season 2003 . As a past player, President and now U- 19 Coach of my club I have arrived at the conclusion that a well run U19 team is essential for senior club success . Whilst this seems logical the process leading to this conclusion may be different for each club . During the 1990 and 1991 seasons Uni Blues and Uni Blacks fielded a combined U- 19 team which lost every game . During this time Blues Seniors slipped from A to B grade and Blacks from B to C and now D grade. At the end of the '91 season Max Lyon and John Miles in their capacity of developing VAFA junior football expressed deep concern about the plight of University football and in particular the pathetic record of our combined juniors . As a result of this meeting Uni Blues made the decision to run its own U-19's opposed to a combined side run by an ineffectual combined committee . It developed a five year plan to restore the seniors to a power club in A grade . A formula for U-19 football was also set, we call it the four R's Resources, Recruitment, Results and Retention . The four R's are very much inter-related . In succinct terms :Resources comprised personnel, funding and equipment. Recruitment resulted from having the correct Resources as described . Results immediately followed with Uni Blues U-19s finishing 3rd in 1992 and 4th in 1993 in Central Division . We entered Division 1 in 1994 and are competitive . Excellent levels of VAFA U-18 and U-19 representation have occurred in 1992, 1993 and now 1994. Rctention of U- 19 players has resulted from the first three R's . The results of our U-19 program have been encouraging . In 1992 our seniors just avoided relegation to 'C' grade, contributed to by the poor U19 teams during the previous two, years . In 1993 Uni Blues seniors lost the Preliminary Final and this year we again are strong . In 1992, 12 U19's played senior football and in 1993, 11 . In past years 1-3 U- 19 players might have been up to senior standard. This year of our senior list 22 of 68 players played U- 19 football in 92/93 and of that 22, 12 have played senior football this year . It is quite clear that any club appointing an U-19 coach must 0 TNF AMATFI IR 1111TRAi i FO -
ensure he has a clear understanding of the club and its total goals. The relationship between the Senior and U-19 coach is absolutely critical. Grant Williams who coaches our senior side not only knows every U-19 player, where possible he attends training sessions and games and has an excellent knowledge of the key players. This makes the transition for the U-19 player much more comfortable . It is no eouieidence that under Grant's coaching our senior side has improved beyond measure, assisted by his keen interest and tangible input to our U-19's . Whilst the U-19 coach must never lose perspective of the big picture not all decisions are easy . A senior coach for example may view the U-19 coach as having primary purpose of providing senior footballers and not necessarily a successful team . However, to attract good players the team itself must be successful as after all, the U-19 player does not consider the Club's "big picture" he just wants to be in a winning tem . There are only 3 players currently with our club who played in our 1991 U- 19s which failed to win a game . There are 11 from our 1992 side still with the club . It is our experience that Retention of U-19's once they reach senior years is much greater from a successful U-19 team.
Resources, Recruitment, Results = Retention . As a coach I often say to my players "don't be in a hurry to play senior football, you will be able to do that for many years but you can play U-19s for only a limited time" . This gives them more time to mature their minds ad bodies playing at a level of competition suitable for their playing development . It also allows them more time to realise their limitations and explore their strengths or aptitudes . This may lead to some comments of player retention longer than necessary with the U-19 coach putting his team success before the senior squad . I am yet to meet a U-19 coach who does not experience a sense of pride in having one of his players enter senior football. I am an advocate for VAFA U-18 and U-19 representative football notwithstanding the team may lose top players for a vital home and away game . The club can only benefit from its young players having the experience of playing at the elite level for their age . This would be the only exception I allow for individual pursuits over the Wain (and hence club) pursuit . Steven Carrol l Coach, Uni Blues U-1 9s Reprinted from AF Vol. 94 No . 14

St. Mary's, after a late charge into the finals, were not able to replicate the form of last season's late bloomers, Swinburne, as they felt to Albert Park. This has now left the race to the four teams that many D4 pundits had pencilled in early in the season .
Phillips providing countless opportunities for their forwards, Albert Park were able to set up a 4 goal lead going int o the - ial term and e entually ran out five goal winners .
Nor ;k began the qualifying final full of running, with the brilliant Simon Care in awesome form across the half back line on the hard Preston ground . It was in the second quarter, however, that the disciplined play that has been Rupea°tswood's trademark this season began to shine through . With Matty West once again dominating for Rupo, North were on the back foot and it wasn't until the dangerous James Murphy was able to slip his tags in the third quarter and combine with Ross Divita in defence and David Newton up forward, that North were able to rebound . Rupertswood, however, lifted again in the final quarter and with Burro~s playing at his brilliant best, the lads from Sunbury overcame North to book a ticket to 2nd SemiFinal ag Werribee with a hard fought five goal victory . L1 _ Ž . : .A L Th came into this match with quite a few question marks o% - their heads after two consecutive losses while the Sai rere experiencing a great lead into the finals . The first quarter started as an arm wrestle with neither team giving anything away . It was the Saints who were first to score but the Falcons replied with a good goal through Sean Allan . With Albert Park's Dave Overland being given the task of tagging St .Mary's prime mover, Gilchrist, and executing this to perfection, the Saints forward supply was limited however. they were quick to take advantage of their limited chances to go into the first break two goals ahead . The second quarter saw the Falcons claw back a goal, and with "Bushy" Hannett and Phil Chambers working the packs tremendously Albert Park looked ready to strike. In the third quarter . Albert Park gained the ascendancy across' the centre and half forward lines and with some strong marking by Sean Venables and some good run from Ari iVlandylaris' the Falcons were able to go into the final change 2 goals clear. The tough lead into the finals must have taken its toll on the Saints, because in the final quarter the Falcons took complete control and if not for some inaccurate kicking . the margin may have been greater than the eventual 5 goal result .
The match between iif :0-17II and Mt. Li2y3ale started tightly hotivever, it was the students that gained the early ascendancy and with Creek and the 0'Neills playing well, was able to open up a slender lead at the first break . Mount was able to lift their work rate in the second quarter to regain the lead by a goal at half time . After the break, the students came out with all guns blazing and after two goals it looked like they were about to nm away with the game, however, Mount were able to lift again through some great work in the centre by Kvm Fraser, Jezza Penhale and Trevor Hansford to keep their side in the match. After the final break, Mt .Lilydale's Andrew Delahunt took an inspiring mark on the wing and, capping off a sterling performance, Charlie Varga kicked two goals to put his side back in front . The students then kicked a late goal to draw within a few pis and in a frantic last t--vv minutes Mount were able to congest the play and hang on by the narrowest of marguis .
The first quarter started slowly until the . bert Park game plan kicked into action and with their forward line working smoothly and Nick Pastras creating opportunities they were able to open up a solid four-goal lead by the end of the quarter. North Brunswick were able to lift in the second quarter, and with Wayne Duson and Dave Magnuson playing well, North were able to peg back the margin to three points at halftime. The Falcons came out full of running after the break and with Adrian Harper controlling the ruck and Jason Rowe, Brendan Payne and "Captain"

The mueh-_t:iticipated rematch of the two D4 heavyweights sees Werribee Amateurs, after a well-deserved week's rest . take on the iii-form Rupertswood for a spot in D3, and more importantly, a berth in the 2002 Grand Final, The last time these two sides met, Rupertswood had the Bee's measure, however, Werribee did win narrowly earlier in the year, and will be hoping to recapture some of that form today. For the Bee's to have a chance, they will need to have their key players in Keogh, Johns and Lovell at their best . while Rupo will rely on the great run from Baines . West and Burrows . Werribee go into this match refreshed, howe.vr, the Preston Oval does suit the Rupertswood styl e

of play, and should the weather be mild, their run will be too much for the Bees as they book a ticket to D3 with an 1 i point victory . ,t Semi Final - North Brunswick versus Albert Park Albert Park will have been buoyed by their brilliant ivin last week against St.Marys, while North on the rebound may prove a tough proposition . North is set to regain key midfielder David Pizzari into the side after a recent 'injury . and when combining with the dangerous Care and Murphy. they are looking the goods . Albert Park will once again rely on their strong on-ball and fonvard set-up and will have in the back of their minds the fact that North has beaten them twice this season . The Falcons were one of the pre-season favorites, however, North would have to be one of the biggest improvers and their form suggests that they should be too good today as they win a thriller by 8 points .

i Fii al -Werribee versus Albert Park The ' rribee reserves team this season has been simply ai . . some, however, one of their two losses for the season has been at the hands of Albert Park . Albert Park's form is also not to be sneezed at and after last week's solid will should not be underestimated . The result here is anyone's -"-ess and it will really come down to who wants to win more . With that said, Werribee have not been tested in ret~ nt weeks, whereas Albert Park look to be more match hardened . Therefore, I am predicting an upset today as the Falcons go through to the Grand Final with a 21-point win . 1sY Semi Final- North Brunswick versus Mt . Lilydale OC North Brunswick would be very disappointed with both teams performances last wweek, however, I believe the Reserves loss should sting more so, given the teams great form leading into the final's campaign . Mt .Lilydale, on the other hand, could not be happier with their win last week, and will go into this match chock full of confidence . It is always difficult to maintain the quality of a reserves team when a senior side is also competing and I believe this may take its toll today on North as they find the supremely confident too hard to hold . Mt .Lilydale for mine by 22 pts. PRESS CORRESPONDENTS Thank you for the great response with a report received from every team (both seniors and reserves) . Well done! These av, ards were the brainchild of V=` -7A President Richard Evans, who put the proposal for the Awards to last year's Executive Seminar, which was approved . Each winning club will receive $1,000 and the VAF4 Umpires' Association $1,000 as thanks for the extra workload on the umpires and for their careful consideration of the weekly ratings .

Perfect football weather met the heavy , ;.its of Section 1 footy - the sun was out and a slight breeze subtly favouring the south end . Both coaches seemed quietly confident that today would be their day. The first 15 minutes was a bruising affair with both teams testing each other out around the ball . SKOBS started with the Rock" at FF and O'Keefe at Cl1F with the pockets and half forwards playing wide and up the ground . Xavs had Doxey at FF and Sapuppo at CHF with small forwards close around them . At the 15 minute mark, Coach Brown moved Chard to CHF and O'Keefe to FP or HF (playing mainly deep) . Bang! Instant success - within 8 minutes O'Keefe had kicked the first 3g, Dempsey marked 1 minute later, and then Aughton roved a ball off HF to snap another . A rout looked in the offing, but then Doxey and Ross booted the last two to keep them within the ga ne . At the first change, only l7pts down . The second quarter started and wthin 28 seconds, Sapuppo snapped from the FP to put them within 1 lpts vvere X.avs back? Answer - no . SKOBS through O'Keefe and Gissing kicked 7 out of the next 8 goals and at halftime led by 44pts . The last half

is much the same as the first as SKOBS ran out iers by 62pts . The big difference between the two s sas not just O'Keefe with his superb 11 majors . It was that SKOBS had at least 2-3 players at the ball at every contest . Outstanding! As well as 15 marks inside the 45 corridor resulting in goals . `. Sunday saw another great day for the battle bet een Old Brighton and Marcellin. These two young coaches had their teams champing at the bit to have a crack at each other . Big Smith went to FF for Old Brighton and the late big inclusion of Salce went to FF for Mareellin . Sheehan of course, went to CHF as usualbut but his match up was the young gun from school Mentiplay. The first quarter was a hard fought affair with the ball moving between both defences at great pace . At the 18 minute mark both sides had kicked two goals each; you wondered who would break first . Old Brighton kicked the next 3g through hard, consistent work inside the 45m corridor all from snaps . The Eagles on-balers started to get on top around stoppages, but their delivery into the fortvard line, particularly CHF was wasteful : not to mention their shooting for goal . The third saw Old Brighton kick the first within 10 seconds, Dignan then replied for Marcellin two minutes later . For the rest of the quarter (27min) only 3g were kicked, leaving OB's in front by 23pts . The lat quarter was 'fantastic finals football, With Marcel'al and OBs trading goals . From the 16 minute mark (OB's last goal), Marcellin continually attacked and by the final siren had clawed their way back to within 3pts . Their small men were outstanding, but the delivery could have been

Ormond began 1 11 with the first three goals to set the tone for the day and from here on in Beatunaris had to play catch-up football . With Muzzell, te Hennepe and Arnold leading the way the Monds physical presence at the ball was the difference . While the dangerous Ferrari bagged eight and Wooinough was a handful with two, the Monds defence worked we ll to shut down the rest of the Sharks and thus their ability to boot a winnine score . Collins, yVindebank and McNicholas tried in vain to lift their side but in the end it was the :4Sonds wi r, and Cook prominent who finished the better . tC ? - r 2 -

Nothing in the game between Old Paradians and Olt Camberwell at half time, with a bruising first half alway : the order of the day. Strickland and Spinoso were ,predict ,prominetforwadsforOP'swhileRya r appeared the only target for the Wellers . After half timt with Connelly and Harvey thriving in the tough final': atmosphere OPs went up a gear, and while the Weller : Agatonovic, Weaver and Birrell did everything in thei power to avert the scoring thrusts, the OPs hammerei home nine second half goals to six to turn a three poirn half time lead into a twenty point win . Could bettei kicking by the Lvellers have caused a draw - maybe we 'l know in two weeks. i Despite a terriffiely contested first quarte between Old Carey and Rupertswood, the OC's even unable to maintain the rage and found themselves doÂŤz at the half. Potter was dominating the forward line fo . Rupo ably assisted by Sullivan and Temming and whils Evans and Stewart-Holmes were battling hard for O C
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2U'0 ;
their work was going largely unrewarded . After half time the boys from Sunbury went up a gear and in the fine conditions ran rings around their opponents adding thirteen goals to four in the second half - as was thei r minanee . Better OC's included Evans and Simson , ' Monzell and Albania stood out for the victors . The Ajax Ferraris got off the grid fast an d hard leaving the Minardi Blues for dead . The Jackers kicked the first 4g and led by 26pts at the first change . They were quick and taekled hard and well . The Blues clawed their way back with a 4g second quarter, but still trailed by 4pts at the major break . Coach Grace restructured the side and reminded the boys of their ability and aspirations . Tim Cotter moved to the forward line . Captain Blood got on top in the ruck and the onballers began to run in numbers . Leigh Northway was sensational in the middle, aided by Hickey, Fairley and Chapman. At three-quarter time the Blues led by three and a titanic last quarter looked in the offing . But a ;even goal to one last quarter saw the Blues win in a eanter. Indeed, the first Semi Ferraris stalled when it ~ unted. Thanks Peter! rushers and the Tigers went after each at a ferocious pace, the ball was 'hot to handle' at quarter time the Krushers lead by 9pts . Oaldeigh > a little bit more composed at the fall of the ball . During the second quarter Oakleigh through the great play of Britt, Earl and Gaal were continually pushing the ball into their forward line, allowing Jordan and Bando to strut their stuff. The Tigers were having problems _Ating the ball past their HF line and at the main break, u ailed by 24pts . The last half was an exact carbon copy of the first, with Oakleigh leading by a further 9 at threequarter time and another l5pts in td1e end . For St . 2des they just couldn't get enough clear space in the vard line to create enough chances . Best were Ferris, edon and McNamara . For St. Bedes Mentone Tigers, die team effort . "T RED
St. Bernards (2) proved most punters right when they opened at a ferocious pace against MHSOB last Saturday . While the High through Raleigh, Dunne and Adcock were getting plenty of the footy their forward thrusts were inaccurate rendering any pressure on the favourites useless . Garth, Mitchell and Madden up forward were damaging for the Bernies and with Johnson, McManus and Ryan in great touch they turned at the half with a sizeable lead . They continued this trend into the third and remaining quarters to win well . lsf' S e ' Nothing in this game all day except for poor kicking. La Trobe led for most of the day except when it counted . Boland for Aquinas was getting plenty of the ball and well backed tip by McyiIullen . Sorace and Beech . For the Students Clutterbuck and McDonald were trying hard but getting little support . While the efforts of Fanning and Slater were promising. While the Bloods led at the half way mark it was anyone's game . In the end the Bloods triumphed in, from all reports, an excitingly close game despite be .ig d( .oid of much skilful ill, i -.
The lc : : - . .a :her forecasts predic t anc - :er -eat sunny day with only light winds . This weather :)uld again seem to favour the big boys at Old Brighton - Smith, Mentiplay and Hogarth . Old Brighton will need to keep the ball in the air and direct into th e

U19 SE-- .forward line . Their run off half back line was good, especially dale but they will have to maintain this and their hardness at the ball for four quarters. Xavs on the other hand will need to get more use out of their onballers especially Pasceri . If Williams' knee doesn't come up, the pressure will be greater because Hogarth is in fine from in the ruck for OB . Doxey up forward will need to give himself far more room to move to have any chance of kicking a bag full . Don't be surprised if Mentiplay moves forward . Prediction - Old Brighton by 8pts! SE CTI ON 2 Old Trinity face a confident Ormond at Scanunell with the reward for victory a crack at Old Essendon . They met in round 1 with a strong win to Old Trinity, while in round 10 it was the Mends who finished the better . Adrian Connelly has moulded a tough, uncompromising side whose improvement has been assisted with a sprinkling of youth, experience and toughness when needed. Their physical presence last week was the difference and today it will be required in droves. Old Trinity did not finish second for no reason, they have potent forcvards, a keen and determined midfield and backline who's as mean as they come. On form the Moods will start favourite and although the game will be close I'm tipping the confidence and physicality of their more experienced players to set the scene for a two goal win . SECTION 3 Not much form to go on here with Old Cambenvell forfeiting in the first round of matches and in round 12 the Wellers far too strong for Rupertswood at home . Poor kicking last week cost the Wellers and coming off a bruising match the scales may well be tipped in favour of Rupertswood whose second half last week was a run away win . Tempone, Hanson, Warner and Weaver have been key players for the Wellers all season and their form will be a good indicator today, add to this mix Ryan, MacCallum and Sigalas, an excellent fmal's record and Rupertswood are up against it . In saying that Rupo have their own guns that will need covering, Potter is on fire up forward, Monzell never gives in, add to this the likes of Plummer, Balmer and McGovern and this game will go down to the wire . The Wellers final's experience tips me their way today by 4 pts . SECTION BLUE Preliminary Final to be played at Bentleigh Recreation Reserve on Saturday September 14 .

SECTION RED MHSOB and Aquinas have met on three occasions this season with the scales tipped in favour of the High 2I1 . The Bloods only victory by l pt in the middle of the season. Should be a ripper of a game considering the miserly defence of the Bloods and the potent forwardline of the High . The Bloods will need all guns blazing to match the High, they will need to keep Raleigh, Adcock, Gervaux and Sierakowski in check, and have plenty of support for the likes of Beech, Kogelman, Tappley and Sorace. If the Bloods can get their kicking boots on they should be able to kick a winning score, but in saying that the High have matchwinners on every line and will need to be closely guarded. In a thriller Aquinas by 4pts .
