".n excellent evening was held last Monday evening at the Crown Entertainment Complex, where many of the prestigious VAFA awards for the season were made . Please refer elsewhere in today's "Amateur Footballer" for full details of all awards, including the best and fairest players and runners-up in all sections .

scores in papers - Well done all clubs

Brilliant is the best word to describe the response to my plea for the winning clubs to collect QJQ scores, each sides best players and goalkickers and then phone these through to the VAFA. Everyone should be proud of the great exposure gained in all Sunday and Monday papers . Thanks clubs - same this Saturday night? ?

Busy week last week . The Rules Review Committee met and will make recommendations to go before the Executive Committee for its consideration. 1~roup representing the Presidents' Forum also met with a group from the Executive. Two representatives of the Presidents' Forum will make a submission in person at the Executive Seminar in October. As well, a small group has been formed to prepare a paper on future reinstatement guidelines . This group will "touch base" regularly with a group comprising members of the Executive and the Presidents' Forum so that the final paper that goes before the Executive is presented in the best possible form .

~nal e charges at finals

Interesting reading and hearing about the complaints about entrance charges to finals at the AFL finals which Ii„ even extended to the VAFA finals .

In the year 2000 entry charges at all VAFA finals were $6 and uien $8 for all grand fmals . These were increased in 2001 to 58 for all finals (A-C) (Dl-D4 and U19 GF's - $6) including .~rand finals & have remained at the same level in 2002 . t'.'hen considering whether they are to be increased the ; iSA looks at all other competitions' charges (excluding the AFL and VFL) to ensure that our entry charges are iieaper than the others and examines the other two sources of the VAFA's income - affiliation fees and sponsorship (noting that any profit from VAFA Properties is redistributed amongst the clubs) . Projected income from gate charges is $150,000 (same as

Footy Tips There is a lot of similarity about the three remaining A and B section finalists . In A section we have the stand-out favourite (St Bernards), a more than worthy challenger (Old Xaverians) and the outsider whose best on the day is certainly capable of providing major upsets (Old Scotch) . In B section, a similar scenario - stand-out favourite (Old Melburnians), worthy challenger (Old Haileybury) and an outsider to be wary of (North Old Boys). With no day time AFL this Saturday or Sunday, hopefully crowds will flock to Elsternwick Park and to Preston City Oval, Cramer Street Preston to see the finals drama continue . Bernard Dinneen (A section best and fairest winner) for one of the best speeches made by a player in his position (winner), responding on behalf of all B and F ~ winners. And also to Umpire of the Year (again) Mark Gibson for his wonderful words . Makes an ageing administrator realise he is in the right business when you hear people like Bernie and Mark speak of the importance of the VAFA to them and to us all . Couple of acts of bad sportsmanship after matches unfortunate that the actions of one person, who can't win or lose properly, damages the image of his whole club . )king Back .. .. . .. .. ::. .. .. . .... .. ... .. .. . ... . .. .. . .. .... . .. .. .. . .. ... .. ...2 Q Coaches Adverts ..„ . .. .. .. ... .. .. . .... .. .. . .. ... .. .. ..22, 2$, 24 & 25 For the Love of the Game . .. . .. .. .. . . 32-33 Coaches' Clipboard . . ... . .. .. . .. .. . .. .. .. ... ..... ..4 .. . ... . .. ...... .. .. . 1 ina€s Venues.. .._ .. .. . .. .. ... .. . 48 f Week's bSatches. .. .... . .. .. ... .. .. . .. .. .. .. ... .. .. . .. .. .. . .. .. . .. ..51 terpwiek Park Draw. . .... .. . .. .. .. .. .. . .. ... .. .. .. . .. .. .. . .. .. . .. .. .62 h'bc+nal& Investigations. .... . . .. ... .. .. . .. .. ... .... .. . .. .. .. . ._ .., .62

be passed on to the clubs through an increase in affiliation fees . With the costs associated in running a football club already causing difficulties the VAFA thinks it reasonable that our level of income from finals gates must be maintained and that our current costs are fair . A GRAND Final day re-match between St Bernards

and Old Xavs is the talk this week in A Section afte r the Bernies held out OX by six behinds in last Saturdays second semi-final . If you believe what you hear, today's preliminary final between Xavs and Old Scotch is a formality for an OX victory. Even Cardinals coach Dale Tapping, in what might be a ploy or just refreshingly honest, is hinting at a grand final between the Catholic old boy clubs . "These (Xavs and Bernies) are the best teams," Tapping said . "We've got our work cut out coming up against them . " It is a fair analysis as Scotch's best result in its four meetings against the top two teams was a draw with Xavs . Scotch will be able to choose from a list minus its long-term injuries to captain Tim Holt, and stars James Gertsman and Bruce Phillips . To boost the men from Camberwell's chances they came in second and third in last Monday's Woodrow medal with the classical Steve Collins a vote behind winner Marcellin's Bernie Dinneen (read below and middle pages) and Scotch ruckman Andrew Crow a vote behind that . They also come in with a nine-goal win over Marcellin whereas Xavs have lost six of their past seven matches and that win was over the relegated De La . Some would argue that DLS was a form team in the last third of the season when it won most of its six matches for the year and last week's run for Xavs brought them into form . Xavs didn't incur any injuries and were happy with John Bowen, back after nearly half a season with hamstring problems, and James Scanlon in the Reserves .

Chris Ellis and Travis Ruyg are expected to have recovered from leg injuries and half way through the last term last week it would have been easy to find room for this OX quartet as Xavs trailed by six goals . Kicking with a gale OX were spurred on by Simon Wood's goal after he ran through the centre and launched from the square . In time-on Scott Mollard and Dan Jordan, who slotted seven goals for the Bernies, bumped each other heavily but both will be available . Earlier the Bernies epitomised their season with their youth and enthusiasm on the hard surface . Teenager Lucas Fielding roamed like a seasoned 2

finals campaigner along the EP wings, Chris Mitchell was a thorn on his forward flank and Ben Jordan delivered his usual dose of on-ball grunt. The conditions were meant to tell on the Xavs' old legs but SB captain Nick Mitchell left the field in the second quarter and did not reappear. It would be tragic if Mitchell can't recover for the grand final after battling through the Bernies' four unsuccessful campaigns over the past five seasons . Luke Turnbull didn't play the last quarter either but a positive for the Bernies half-back line was the appearance of Ben Loughlin who had a five-week suspension reduced during the week leading up to the second-semi reduced to three . CONGRATULATIONS to Dinneen for winning backto-back Woodrow Medals. It is the first time in seven years that the Woodrow has been presented to the same man in successive years and that was Ormond's Matt McConvill . Marcellin has set a record by winning the past four Woodrows, with Glenn Cox and Dave Waters the previous recipients . Coburg won three in a row between 1969 and 1971 . In 1998 Dinneen won the B Section Medal giving the Eagles five in a row . NORTH Old Boys president Bruno Conti is unhappy with what he believes are three negative media reports from St Bernards regarding their former coach of five years, Garry Foulds, who left last year to go to NOBs . Conti thought comments made in this column last week by Bernie stalwart Luke Gollant "dragged Garry through the mud" as did two references made in "The Age" when the club was asked to compare this year with last. "I wish St Bernards well in the A-grade grand final but can you just concentrate on yourselves," Conti said. "Garry is a wonderful football person and he doesn't deserve this. " FORMER Marcellin OC president Patrick Dennis doesn't think premiership coach Simon Dalrymple will return next year. This means that the 2001 grand final coaches are unlikely to be with their teams next year following Mike McArthur-Allen's retirement. ST KEVINS will not deny former Old Melburnian s (D THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2002

coach Neil Ross, Mazenod coach Dave Murray, are coaching applicants.

WELCOME back to A Section to OMs who left our grade in 2000 but have been a force in B grade finishing third last year and now into next Saturday's Grand Final . With form like that, one of the eight remaining teams from this year is likely to be lining up in B grade in 2004 . beitzetl, auiphalink.com .a u

PRELIMINARY FINAL - September 15, 2002 SENIORS

i OLD SCOTCH congratulate their champion ruckman Andrew Crow on his 100th game with the club this Sunday. Andrew played basketball at school so all Old Scotch supporters are grateful he "saw the light", as he has played a key role at the club winning the Best and Fairest award in 1999 and 2001,and captained the team in that great 1st semi-fmal win over Marcellin two weeks ago . Also Brad Robinson probably the best "small" in the competition, Sam Thompson recently promoted to the Seniors, and Scott Lillingston all recently celebrated their 50th games with Old Scotch-well done .

It was a big day at the home of football, EP, and the stakes were massive between Olds M elburnians and .Flaiieybury . It was the flag favourites who sent out a clear message to the B Section world when they smashed their hapless opponents by 68 pts . The first quarter set the scene for the day, as OMs punished any OH errors with rebound footy. Hazell for OMs was having a picnic, booting 3 goals in this term . At the first change, OMs had opened up a 1 3 pt lead, but the indications were that it could have been a lot more . The next quarter of footy saw the OH turnovers climb in number, and hence, the OMs confidence grew as they ran amuck. OMs cruised to a 6 goal lead and if not for 2 quick goals in 'junk time' by OH, the half time margin would have been more embarrassing than the 26 pt deficit the lads from McKinnon faced . The only highlight for OH was the job that Carson was doing on Berry, as OMs had winners everywhere. They don't call the third qtr the premiership for nothing . If Mick Dwyer thought he was having a bad day, he had to think again . Hazell appeared to be in in places at once, Mulquinney had more take-aways than the local fish & chip shop and Holme was taking it right up to the twin OH towers of Farrell and Jenke in the ruck . Langford-Jones (OH) was going about as well as I was at Doomben, and with his brilliance nullified, the odds of a comeback were diminished . The fat sheila was ordered in by Richard Evans and told to sing at the last change, as OMs held a 10 goal lead . With the damage done and the result known, the last stanza was one where the motions were played out . 4 goals to 3 in favour of OMs further increased the margin and the dominance shown throughout the day. For OMs, we hope that both Hazell and Muiquinney have a short stint in hospital as they recover fr om a large dose of leather poisoning and OMs supporters are hoping they get home in time for the OF . Holme and Hicks were also solid contributors in a great team effort . Good players for OH were hard to find, although Carson and McMahon tried hard all day, they had little support from their team mates . R ESERVES RE VIE W In the rain, Old Melburnians outplugged Old paradians in a low scoring game to prevail by 6 pts . 4 goals to 3 tell us the game was not a pretty sight,

d from all reports , it was like watching 2 old steeds battle it out at the end of a 3

mile steeplechase, a s skill was predominantly replaced by G&D . It was OMs who had their beaks just in front at the final siren . Better players for OMs were Useinov, Grant and Crawshay. Wouldn't know who played well for Ihe OPs as no-one bothered to tell me! !

It's the last chance today for these two teams at Sandringham, as victory propels the winners to A Section in 2003, and potential glory in The Big One . In contrast, the losers have an early end of year party and the hard yakka begins shortly to go one better in 2003 . For some time now, Mick Dwyer has quietly gone about the business of compiling the wins to give them the double chance, culminating in the victory in Rd 18 which achieved this aim . The only problem is that that victory came at a cost, with a number of players lost to injury for the remainder of the year. This will certainly test the depth of the lads from MeKinnon . O'Farrell is the key to this game . If he can either give the on-ballers first use of the ball, or slide down and kick a few snags himself, the gam e ah} swing in the favour of OH . Similarly, th e (Langfor(1-Jones) couldn't possibly have 2

shockers in a row and will surely bounce back today . If Carson and Lay across the half back line provide their forwards with plenty of supply, a winning score could certainly be kicked . After last week's result, Garry Foulds and his charges must really fancy their chances today, as they know their opponents will be down on confidence and they will be looking to exploit this state of mind . Many (including yours truly) thought that the punters from Brunswick were making up numbers in the finals, but there was a loud statement made 2 weeks ago, and I could see the 2 figured salute from Qld suggesting that I go forth and multiply. The backline led by Hosking steeled themselves beautifully in the face of an onslaught in their last game, which puts them in good stead for today. Should the onballers of Hyde and Collison dine out and have themselves a picnic, and give many opportunities to that man mountain in front of goals (Barker), one suspects it could be a Similar experience to feeding time in the lions' cage at the zoo! ! Okay, now to a selection . Both teams have performed much better than I have thought, and hats off to them for their efforts . Unfortunately, there can only be one winner today, but a great game beckons . The lads from McKinnon couldn't possibly play as badly two weeks in a row, and for that reason I think they can redeem themselves today and get the prize . OH by 20 pts .

Reserves Old Paradians (4/ 7 ) vs Old Haileybury (5/4) OP by 6 pts Interesting match this one. OH have been weakened by injury, and OP may be feeling the pinch after last week's loss . I think there might be just enough in the tank for the Bundoora boys to get over the line and get another crack at OMs .

OLD HAILEYBURY - congratulate Hamish Brooks on playing his 50th game for the Bloods against Old Melburnians last week . Last year's U 19 B&F winner, Hamish has made the step up this year to the senior side and has proved to be extremely slippery around the forward line, regularly scoring goals and being named amongst the best players . Well done Brooksy .

Sc To the victors go the spoils. Congratulations to al l associated with St Bedes Mentone Tigers who after languishing in C-Grade for 10 years have finally achieved their wish and made it to B-Grad e at last . To Dale Collins, whose efforts would inspire anyone - he just loves the place and his hard working Committee, well done. And to Russell Barnes and the players your efforts in bouncing back from the disappointment of last week is just a terrific effort totally full of courage. Whatever today holds enjoy it because you have taken your club on a big step forward.

The Grammarions quietly bid us farewell not without putting up a great show and can took forward to next year with a lot of confidence. Before a huge crowd and with the stakes high the Fields were all over the Tigers early as they totally dominated proceedings out of the centre . They played smart footy as they piled on three goals but 7 costly misses was to come back and haunt them before the game was over . Perhaps they played the wrong flank . The backline of the Tigers was pretty good as they fought tooth and nail to keep their side in the game . At the first change the Fields led by some 13 points . The second started with the Fields scoring first kicking into the strong wind to stretch the lead to some 20 points, as the Tigers battled to stay in touch . But evergreen Tim Beasley was starting to overpower Sorensen in the nick allowing Hayes, Mouse, and Moose to start to get first use of the ball . The Tigers from this started to look dangerous kicked a couple of goals and when Daniel Poynton whose attack on the footy was much better this week booted another the scores were levelled as the half time siren sounded . The third quarter again proved to be the decisive one. The Fields made it three out of three by scoring the first goal but the pace of young Andrews started to give the Tigers forwards some opportunities kicking into what now was a howling gale. A fiery fellow who goes by the name of Tim McColl entered the fray and his hard tackling was unsettling the free flowing game that the Fields like to play . Barnesy made a couple of good tactical moves stationing the Wintle Bros across half back, King in his 100th game kicked a very valuable goal and as the bell sounded for some oranges the Tiges were in front . Coming home with the breeze and kicking to their supporters end one felt they could get over the line . 10

The opening to the final stanza saw both sides attacking relentlessly as it went between half forward lines. Caulfield broke clear to goal and regain the lead. A bad turnover by the Fields then saw Sammy Hecker get the ball to his skipper who kicked truly and the Mentone boys were back in front . Caulfield goaled again to take a two point lead . The tension was unbelievable you could cut the atmosphere with a knife, Moose and Juice both missed and the scores were level. Not long to go either. Finally came the last thrust of the dice at the 28 minute mark as the little Mouse cleverly showed a touch of class to knock the ball over his head to the even smaller Scafidi who slotted it through from the boundary line to seal the victory. Emotional scenes followed as the Tigers celebrated hitting B-Grade for the first time in the club's history . The gallant Fields were left to rue a first term full of inaccuracy. In the Ressies in a wind marred game the Fields received some consolation as the side held on to beat Whitefrirs by 3 goals and earn a shot at Old Camberwell in the Grand Final . Season 2002 comes down to this the big one the Grand Final at Elsternwick Park . Neither side wants me to put the "kiss of death" on them but unfortunately I have to pick one of them. My prowess has gone off a bit during the finals so whatever l decide today won't hurt either of you too much.

Whitefriars most impressive in the Second Semi Final have the luxury of being able to pick Wood, Nunan and Adam Pawlik today . Will Greg Fuetrill and Simon McAuliffe take the punt and pick all three, two of the three, one of the three, or will they leave well enough alone and not tamper with the winning combination of a fortnight ago. This and more will be answered by 4 .30pm today . The Tigers second half last week was pretty good and their early season confidence seemed to be returning. They will go in the underdogs for sure a situation that Russell Barnes will totally thrive on . I think they are a real chance especially if Tim Beasley in possibly his last game for the club can quell the influence of Pasqualotto and Wood . I could prattle on forever about the pro's and con's of this game but unfortunately space does not allow . I love the District club's and I love the underdogs so I'm going for the Tigers to cause an upset . 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2002

Old Camberwell should win the Ressies to add something to a disappointing season . ia;,s } The Association was deeply saddened to learn that Hugh Lyon Snr had died on Thursday, 29th August, 2002 after a prolonged illness . His firm, Hugh Lyon Knitwear, had been a VAFA sponsor since 1982 and, of course, the maker of all our club guernseys . His firm has the distention of being our longest continuing sponsor .

We convey our deepest sympathy to his wife, daughter and to his son Hugh Jnr. and wife Rhonda who have run the business so successfully for some years.

(T~ THE AMATEUR

Sadly, Ted McNamara died last week after a long illness . He had been a faithful servant of the former Coburg Amateur Football Club for over seventy years an illustrious team manager and great stalwart of the University Blues . In 1993 Ted and his wife Norma both received a Certificate of Merit from the Association for truly magnificent and dedicated service to their club . In turn, they had both been elected for Life Membership of the MUFC . They were a great football "team" . Ted was so thorough in everything he did and so polite to everything with whom he dealt . Our sincere sympathy is conveyed to his widow Norma .

TODAY' S Mentone Amate l, . ': ,r ~he fourth time this season, wit .!?e _iltu? : .mning the 3 to date by 36, 10, & 3 points resk :ct; ;ely. Today's game is unusual in that it will be the fourth different venue these Clubs have competed on this year . The Animals will note that they have been getting closer each time, and perhaps at Box Hill they'll hit the jackpot! The Vultures could rightly answer that regardless of venues, they keep Nvinning, so why

should today be different? It looks as though the wide wings of i . City Oval will b e ; }od nick for today, so i :Vuitures' speedsters will pose some problem s furrier's covering troops, but their bac k be strengthened by the return of the in for m >rebs. Tony Macgeorge and Tim McCann will resume their ongoing duel at FF & FB respectively, but the Animals will need to shut down more than just Tony Mae . He was held fairly well in the 2nd Semi, but Barr (T), Ogier, Wilkins & Perrin all contributed to their winning score that day . The battle of the runners: O'Meara, the Sullivans, the Barrs, & Dixon for Mentone, versus Donovan, Fennell, Burgess, Don Dini, and Buckle would alone be worth ten times the admission price to see . Hope our esteemed VAFA Treasurer doesn't see that! The Vultures will have their hands full coping with Brad Bird and Brendan Vaughan at the Animals' sharp end. Vaughanie is in ominous form, and Brad is due for a'big one' . So far this Senior series I haven't picked a winner, so today I'm going with the strength and st=ltin(1, from the confines of my padded cell, tha, i .nntone will tivin a sensational match by 2-3 go< r t< on = : ti

It rained and rained and rained . Old Scotch led by 2 1 points at half time, OH came back strongly in the third an d with Mark Seccull dominant got back to 7 points before Steve Collins slotted one from the boundary to give the Cardinals control . It was an unrelenting slog in the last quarter with final scores OS 13.10 (88), OH 10.13 (73) . Best were Smith, Steele, O'Brien (OS) and Seccull, S . Walden, Connell (OH). The question to be answered - how would Old Scotch front up next week after such a tough bruising game ? 'D' section 1994, 'A' section 98, St Kevins Old Boys and Terry Quirk were very elated when the siren went to record victory against MHSOB 13 .21 (99) to 10 .10 (72) . Up to the last change no more than one goal was the difference all day. Burden's experience was telling for SKOBS in th e final term, Ben Dollman across half forward was ver y active, and SKOBS won 13 .21 (99) to 10.10 (72). Best were Bossong, Keighran . Farquharson (St . K .) and Pertzel, Skinner, Cassell (MHSOB) . Would Marcus Dollman have a 'B' section premiership medal to go with 'B' section Best and Fairest ? North Old Boys were the fancied team but after an even first term the Eagles surged away to lead 10 .9 to 5 .5 at half time . Caffry had kicked some big goals, Karavasalis as ever was elusive, and with O'Flynn strong in defence, and veteran Chris Slattery breaking into attack, the Eagles seemed to have the flag in their hands . North Old Boys won the second half with Luke Boyle getting 4 goals but were not able to get close enough to threaten . Smith and Tonkin were good support for Boyle . Final scores were MOC 15 .21 (111) NOB 12 .9 (81). Congratulations to captain Dave Waters and coach Tony Paatsch. A five goal burst in the third term gave the Sharks control against Old Geelong, and they went on to win 14 .18 (102) to 13 .10 (88). Reidy was dominant all day in the ruck for Beaumaris, and other stars were Hanrahan (6 goals), Bradshaw, Johnson, Pitts, Thomas . Old Geelong's best were Edmonds, Salter, Darcy, Neeld, Howells, Misson.

Accuracy kept St Bernards in reasonable touch in the first half of'A' preliminary final when they kicked 5 .0 to De La's 8 .6 . They could not make up the leeway and De La won, 13 .11 (89) to 11 .8 (74) to go on to meet Collegians in the 'A' Section Grand Final . Best were Wright, Campbell, Fiume, Ronchi, Toohey, Hunter (De La) and Carey, Mallia, Walsh (St Bernards) .

players, Mike Knuppel, Mick Bolt and Steve Harrison who were touring Europe . Boltie had won the Best an d Fairest in the London AFL competition - his trophies inel'uded a dozen bottles of French Champagne and a four week travel holiday in Europe . Overnight rain, heavy showers, and early hail turned the Box Hill Oval into a mudheap for the 'B' Section preliminary final . The scores told the tale, it was back to 'A' Section for Old Trinity. Quarter by quarter scores were Old Trinity 2 .6 3 .6 5 .8 5 .10 (40) Old Melburnians 0 .1 2 .7 2 .8 3 .12 (30) Best were Hedley, Hopkins, Beardsley, Allibon, Hudson, Dunn (Old Trinity) and Rose, Wilson, O'Brien, Teal, Bryan, Webb (OM) . St Leos were too strong all day for Old Essendon to take out 'F' Section flag, 9 .17 (71) to 3 .7 (25) . Best were Douglas, Robinson, Withers, Steward, Gill, Sargeant (St Leos) and Panagiopolos, Bradshaw, Crameri (Old Ess) . Old Brighton with 85 points won the Four 'n' Twenty Great Australia Pie Championship over St Leos 84 and Glenhuntly 75 .

-1 Old Paradians to defeat Ormond and go on to play Old Xavs in the Grand Final - a replay of 1986's 'B' Section Grand Final. Would it be the first time it had been done for the'B' Section grand finalists to make it next year to the 'A' Section grand final? Tipsters Ross Booth and Peter French thought Paradians would be there and so continued on their shocking record of finals tips. At half time it looked as if the boys may be right . After an even first quarter, two goals apiece, Parade played a magnificent second quarter, kicking 6 goals in 17 minutes with 5 coming from the boot of forward, Michael Skerrit and led by 28 points at half time . Centre half back Dale McCann, rover Frank Gleeson and forward Ted Flynn had all been prominent for Parade while Ormond struggled . It was a superb third quarter by Ormond . Coach McArthur-Allen made some significant changes - Paul Sutherland to the fonvard line, Brad Nash on the ball - th eachkid3nthe2dalf,nuorwadPu l Schuhkraft got to 6 to make it 87 for the season . Parade were gallant in defeat. They came back strongly f by Ormonco6galsinthefrm,oybatched with the same number . First gamer Lindsay McMahon was inspirational in thf ruck for Ormond and other best players were Nash Schuhkraft, Cox, Sutherland and Tobin. It was hard to se (

how they left out Phil Mehrten and Phil Kingston . Mehrten was reported in the final term and, it would be a long time to Tribunal night for the Mends supporters . Gleeson, Board, Woods, Skerrit, Grills and Canavan were Parade's best. In 'B' Section the Executive were very worried at the last change that it would be another draw . A prodigious goal by John Pearson and then one of the biggest goals ever at Elstermvick Park by Greg Wood made the game a certainty for St Bernards . Sullivan, Nathan, O'Dea, Hogan, Comito, Federico (St B's) and Flaherty, Reddick, Quinn, Ratcliffe, Gibson, Mallon (Therry) were best . After 29 years as a player and official, 240 games and President from 1972 to 1987, Elsernwick's president Graham Holmes had decided to step down . A special presentation 3 made to Graham at the club's Trophy Night .

Bernards O.C . and go into the grand final against North Old Boys . In 'B' Section, Ivanhoe scraped home by one point from Reservoir Old Boys in a see saw game in which the teams were never more than 10 points apart . Fawkner proved their supremacy for the season in 'C' with a 29 point win over Parkside in a high scoring game, 20 .21 to 17 .10. Best were Richardson, Foley (Fawkner) and Howell, Felle, Wilson (Parkside).

Goal umpire Ralph Bridges waved the flags for his 350th Vi':i'A game . De La Salle's strong second half dominated by their small brigade, saw North Old Boys defeated 15 .13 to 10.17 .

Best were Maher (4 goals), Williams, McDonnell, Bourke, Frenetic, Greene (De La Salle) and Walsh, Griffin, O'Rourke, Clark, Conti, Ryan (North Old Boys) . North Old Boys went on to annihilate Marcellin in the preliminary final, leading 14.9 to 1 .6 at half time, with the final scores 19 .16 to 8.12 . Starts were Griffin, S . Weir, Borcich, O'Rourke (North Old Boys) and Cain, Ebert, Howard (Marcellin). In'C' Old Camberwell took out the flag when they repeated their semi final win against Coburg to win just as convincingly 17 .20 to 11 .7 with the best players Rogers, Hackett, D . Steven (Old Camberwell) and Purcell, N. McAuliffe, Peck (Coburg) . Parkside beat St Pius for the third time to win 'D' premiership . B. Clark, Arnold, Heaver, Bastow (8 goals) would go down in Parkside's history as the grand final stars . Traditional rivals Therry and Banyule staged a typical encounter for the 'E' section flag - a close game all day, the lead changing frequently, and Therry proving too strong in the final term kicking 5.4 to 2 .1 to triumph 16 .6 to 14 .10 . Best were White, Whyley, McMahon, Weir, Biddlestone, Chetecuti (Therry) and Ladd, Taylor, Power, Fraumano, Foster, McKenzie (Banyule) . The match was obviously very fiery - 5 Banyule players were reported and suspended for a total of 24 weeks while two Therry players were reported for one weeks suspension. The closest grand final saw Bulleen United beat Peninsula Old Boys by 7 points, 14.8 (102) to 13 .17 (95). Morley, Viney, Anderson (Bulleen United) and Wiltshire, Doyle, Horne (Peninsula Old Boys) starred . Junior premiers were Bulleen Templestowe, Ivanhoe and Fawkner.

The Association bid farewell to George McTaggart, editor for the Amateur Footballer for close to 30 years, who had retired from the Titles office in October to go overseas with his family for two years . -

F Parade's shocking inaccuracy, 3 .14 to half time against Caulfield Grammarians 6 .7 almost cost them the game which really went their way when they kicked four goals in as many minutes in the third term to go on to an easy victory . A great perform ance by Parade who had won the 'B' Section premiership in 1971 an d would now meet 1971 'A' Section premiers, Ormond in the gran d final . hi'B' Seetion University Blacks contributed to their defeat with poor shooting 11 .22 while Ivanhoe kicked 18.10 to earn the right to meet Geelong in the gr and final.

Irel and, Hughes, Dickson (Ivan hoe) were best . Reservoir shocked Assumption with a 10 .4 to 1 .1 in the second quarter to go on and win the 'C' Section premiership and retain their unbeaten record . Devlin, Bates, R. Shepherd ( Reservoir) an d Lewis, Duro, Phillips (Assumption) were best . Parkside with a 1 point win over Old Brighton gained the D' Section premiership, Ridd, Sammut, Graham, Dryden (Parkside) and Watkins, Mullett, Templeton (Old Brighton) were best. 1 :Vrli : . / j kl ' Caulfield Grammarians (14.12) defeated Melbourne High (12 .14) to enter the Grand Final against Old Paradians . Best for Caulfield Grammarians were Ward, P . Here, Pyman, Baker, Vorrath, Williams and for M .H .S, Fairbank, Nelson, Turnbull, Needham, Harley, Gilbert. North Old Boys (11 .7) kicked 6 .4 to 0 .1 in the last quarter against Ormond (7 .10) to play University Blues in the 'B' Section Grand Final and enter 'A' Section in 1968 . J ITWE Final Salesian v La Trobe University: One point was all Salesian needed to advance to th e Grand Final after coming from behind to defeat La Trobe University in a nail biter . University led at every change only to miss out at the final bell. Inaccurate kicking and not running out the game cost them a promotion and chance at the flag. Salesian's confidence will be boosted by the performance as they shape to take on the premiership favourite Yarra Valley, the third time in the past four weeks. For La Trobe the mood from the rooms after the game wasn't pleasant, being so close yet so far . Coach Brian Grills was still upbeat about his side performance both on the day and in the season . "The average age of our senior group is around 21 years. If you had said to me at the half way point when we were sitting in forth last, you will make the preliminary final and lose by a point, I would have thought you were crazy. "I am proud of the way the boys played, sure it's disappointing but we are looking forward to next year," said Brian.

Grand Final Preview

Well so much has been written in clashes between these two clubs recently (playing each other three times in the past four weeks) there's not much more that can be said. Results have gone the way of the Bushrangers so far, one a blow out and the other a much closer affair in the first week of the finals . Salesian will have momentum after toppling La Trobe in the Preliminary Final, while the Bushrangers had the week off to rest and prepare for the game. With a healthy rivalry among the two teams this game will be tightly fought . The Bushrangers made the effort to watch last weeks match, probably to the dislike of Salesian who copped a bit from the fence . I'm sure the tongue in cheek banter will be put aside this week as the boys from both teams come out with all guns blazing . The Bushrangers are blessed with height, hard running on-ballers, and a desire to finish off an almost perfect season that they have dominated from start to finish . Key players in the match are Ash Drew, a classy midfielder who finished second the league B&F . He has been among the Bushrangers best all season and along with captain Peake, another player who always seems to find space on the wings, will be critical to the Bushrangers chances .

For Salesian the key will be team discipline. Last time they met they I reported and consequently sent off, allowing the Bushrangers a big advantage . They will also need another great performance from important play makers Ivan Bobetic, fantastic last week, Higgins and Thain up forward, and Campbell in the ruck . The match-ups will also be interesting and I'm sure coach Gary Connolly will ring the changes in an attempt to get it right . Predictions My tip is this game will be close . Some supporters may think it's a pre-season intra-club match at times with the teams seeing so much of each other lately . Match ups will be a big factor, Salesian have done plenty of homework in the past few weeks so today will be examination time . But only a fool would tip against a side that has lost just one game for the year and beaten the opposition comfortably on each occasion . As I am sure Salesian will be happy about my tip - I haven't had too much luck recently and I am the outright wooden spoon champion scribe tipster winning the home away season in style . But back to the game I think the Bushrangers will be Premiers in Season 2002 and win by 33 points . Ash Drew to get best on ground honors .

0 2 experts say . . . Benfy Lee, President, Fitzroy Red s "Salesian showed they know how to win last week and I expect them to back up again today in an upset ." Stephen Drury, Captain, Fitzroy Reds "I can't go past Yarra Valley. They have been the form side all year and playing full back against them I know how well they move the ball forward . I wish Gary Connolly and his team all the best for the big day, but think the Bushrangers will win the flag this year." Dennis Timms, Senior Ptayer, Fitzroy Reds "Without the Reds in the finals I'm not too interested . In all seriousness though I expect Yarra Valley to get up . they are just a class side but the result will be close ." Reserves Peninsula is the dark house and the form side in the reserves. It will be interesting to see how two hard finals matches' takes it toll on the side against a rested and fresh Yarra Valley . I expect with the weeks break behind the Bushrangers will win well and kickstart th e THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2002

Disco, so named because of his ability on the dance floor has been able to transfer his classy footwork into hard running and polished skills on the football field. It is fitting that he plays his milestone game in what is his fifth grand final appearance for the club. Disco has also worked extremely hard off the field for the Bushrangers as a committeeman and fundraiser and his efforts have been rewarded today with two sides in the grand final. Congratulations Mark . Also Stev e -sk on playing his 50th in the grand final . Steve has ~en invaluable this season providing a lot of run off :,Le wing and kick starting the boys when inspiration is needed. His determination and hard running are the keys to his success. Well Done to Rick Love who umpired his 100th during the first week of the Finals Series. GOOD FEEDBACK FOR STUDENTS OF THE. ..COLLEGE UMPIRING PROGRAM :

A group of Student Umpires from Whitefriars, Penola and St Paul's Colleges, were guests of the AFL Umpires at the Melbourne and Richmond game at the MCG on Sunday 4th August . The student umpires were required to be at the MCG two hours before the game started . This enabled them to speak to the AFL boundary and goal umpires officiating, before they prepared for their AFL game . The group then watched the game, observing the umpires . They asked Ian Webb - Sports Coordinator at St Paul's College - to give us some feedback from the Student Umpires that attended . Ian said, quote : 'The students felt it was a great experience . They particularly liked speaking to the AFL umpires . Seeing someone first hand and hearing how they started out was great help and encouragement to them . Sitting with the boundary and goal umpires' coaches was also good for them, so that decisions and signals could be explained to them when they happened. The

boys felt it was a good day and hope that it runs again next year." We hope that the AFL umpires i n question can handle the extra pressure of becoming role models and mentors . The VAFA umpires would like to say "THANKS" to the AFL people who made the suceessful day possible . A few weeks ago we looked back at the field umpires from previous years gone, this week we thought we look back at the A and B Section Goal Umpire's of 1997 . Inaugural president Haydn Park said "it is beyond expectations". "Ian Downes', Wayne Reddaway's and my sons wanted to play footy and we thought there is only one place to play and that is the Amateurs having played with other VAFA clubs," Park said . "Also old boys Rod Penaluna and Duncan Stainstreet wanted a place to play . "

What caught our attention was the Bushrangers were relegated last year from D I and they have bobbed back in the minimum of time . "We recruited a couple of players, brought Egrade best-and-fairest Fraser Macvean out of retirement and promoted a dozen Under-19s," current president Stephen Le Get explained . With a handful of senior players expected back from overseas, the Rangers have their sights on C Section .

Brunswick came out smoking against S t Johns in some fairly inclement conditions down at Cheltenham Reserve. Four goals to zero was exactly the type of start that Coach Siebrand would have been looking for . Hamilton on the wing was brilliant for the Westies, whilst Steve Benjamin was dangerous up forward . St Johns worked their way back into the game, particularly the likes of Koppens in the ruck and Walker around the ground . They just weren't able to bridge the gap and the Westies held a strong lead at the main break . The anticipated third quarter surge from the Jocs did eventuate but once again, just as it appeared that they would take control, the Westies struck back. Two goals down at the last break, kicking into a breeze was going to be a tough assignment for the minor premiers . A quick goal to start the last quarter made it even tougher but once again the Jocs dug deep but ultimately it was to no avail . Great win for the Westies and a quick bounce back into D2 for the club. The Jocs will be lamenting on a season so close but no doubt in time will reflect on the continued building of a very solid base for the future.

c :e A ys : This week's Grand Final sees West Brunswick up against Hawthorn, and if the matches I've seen so far are any indication, the most disciplined team defensively should win . Both teams have managed to defeat minor premier St. John's OC over the last fortnight, generally by strangling the life out of the JOCs forward line with hard-nosed defence, the JOCs being limited to 103 and 70 points in the last two weeks . Both sides are blessed with talent in all parts of the ground, and it could well be who does the better of the two teams in these one on one battles that decides the overall outcome of the match today . For example ; who will be assigned the task of harnessing Hawthorn powerhouse Dan Lauletta? Will it be Sam Pietch or Richard Benjamin, who have been two of the premier defenders in the competition this year, or will West Brunswick coach Julian Siebrand have somebody else in mind altogether? At the other end of the ground, Steve Benjamin again will be required to make the most of his goalscoring opportunities for the Magpies, but it

won't be easy with the likes of the Avery boy s and Cargill to make life tougher, but another three goals like last week could be enough if the West Brunswick defence plays like it did against St. Johns . In the middle, Adam Cannane's ability is widely known, while his less heralded team-mate Rob West is also one of the more accomplished on ballers at this level . In the end both teams offer convincing arguments as to why I should pick them to win this game . However, myself having been the kiss of death in the finals, they may not necessarily wish for my endorsement. After pondering long and hard, taking into account statements I have made since the start of the season, then being forced to make a quick decision due to publishing deadlines, I'll plump for the Pies by 13 points, and Adam Cannane to be best on ground .

What Ed Says: A Grand Final clash that not too many of the experts would have predicted at the start of the year, let alone a few weeks ago . West Brunswick appointed a new coach at the start of the year in Julian Siebrand and he quickly got into the coaching caper . The Westies year has been punctuated with a few very close losses whilst their trademark has been their water tight defence led by Pietch, R Benjamin and Clarke . Any midfield with the multi League Best and Fairest Adam Cannane will always be strong however it's also complemented with the likes of Lehman, Hamilton and West . Finally, up forward, Steve Benjamin is a star who is sure to keep the crowd entertained with his fetes . Its not a one man band up there though, Kent, Dempsey and Coonan are all dangerous forwards who will take a power of stopping . Hawthorn has been a bit of a surprise packet this year however with an average age of 21 last year, improvement was to be expected . The Hawks jumped from the gate early . -,viiuiing the first eight before having a bit of a mid season siesta before once again getting their motors running. Phillips in the ruck has been a great acquisition for the Hawks whilst the adding of Carle and Cargill to defence has solidified the back six . The midfield of the Hawks includes Reed, Hayes, Stevens and Glover, all of whom are capable of getting plenty of the footy. Up forward, Lauletta is the colossus for the Hawks . Really hard to pick . Having a conflict of interest, I TWP AAAATFI IR F(1l1TRAI I FR 9nn2

wish both sides well for the day and have no doubt the game will honour the principles of VAFA footy! Rese rv es : Pete: In the reserves, St. John's OC must salvage something after a disappointing end to their senior's season, and I think they will overcome South Melbourne Districts by 19 points. Ed: Under strict instructions from a number of Joe players to tip against them, I will go for the Bloods . Nick the P up fortivard will be the man the Jocs need to stop, keep him to less than four goals and the drive up the freeway may be a memorable one .

,Where is the passion?" "There is no spark!" "Whats wrong with them?" Most coaches have uttered one or all of the above phrases at some point in their coaching lives . Those that haven't, must be new at the coaching caper, for their time will come .

Obviously all teams want to will each and every game they play in, but how as a coach can you ask your players to -get up" for another big game, when for what may be a myriad of reasons, you can sense they are a little flat . We know players get tired during a season and some of their enthusiasm for the game can begin to wane, especially on those cold and rainy Tuesday and Thursday evenings . They may be having difficulties at work, troubles with a partner, lingering injury problems, form concerns or quite simply, they are not enjoying themselves any longer, tliere are other priorities in their life . Coaches also get tired duripg a season, but needless to say their mood is far brighter if they can "pinch" a game when they know their team has performed below their capabilities, and yet still tasted victory . USE OF LANGUAGE . As a coach, it is important to be aware of your usage of language both on and off the traek, and on matchday. If each game is considered a "must win", it is unlikely you will prevail on all occasions, as your players are unable to differentiate when a big effort is REALLY necessary and the games will all seemingly appear the same . Players realise when games are bigger than normal . Stay positive, remember to foster the spirit of team, it's not about us (coaching staff) and them (players), we are all working towards the betterment of the football club. GET TO KNOW YOUR PLAYERS . The days where the coach's way was the only way are gone. Understand what drives them and what they are thinking about . How many coaches know the names of player's girlfriends or what occupation a player does? Do they believe you are selecting them in their best position? Positively reinforce your beliefs in individuals both to them personally and when addressing the team, to achieve your game plans, and let them know exactly of the role you envisage for them . Build your players up, make them feel as if they can do anything for you! For example, play through Smithy on the wing, we all know he is the best kick at the club, let's use him to move the ball forward . Benny is a great crumber, you know he will get hands on the ball, let's see the runners moving past ready to take the handball . SET TARGETS . These should be done both for the individual and the team, whether it be numbers of possessions, tackles, contested marks, l°kers or whatever. The numbers should vary from week to week so players do not get complacent and preferably each player should be told a few days in advance of one specific area to be addressed, come game day . If targets are achieved reward the player, if not, work with the player to understand why it+ did not occur. C 'l THF AMATFI IM FCNITRAI I FR 90O?

"Your Coaches' Association "

VARY TRAINING METHODS. Give yourself a break, get a new voice to put the players through their paces . Keep player interest up . Change some of the drills, have a very physical night at training (hopefully not after a mauling as the players will expect this) . It is most effective if the players are pre-warned to your intentions (send the group e-mail) . For at work or uni during the day, they will already be mentally preparing for a gruelling session . During the evening, be sure to state many times that this is a°tough night, to stick at it, and remain strong in the mind and the body ." Following the completion of training there will be a great feeling of achievement from those who attended . Tell the players you are pleased with them. Give them a sense of pride in their efforts. ENJOY YOURSELF . There are thousands of different things you could be doing on training evenings and matchdays, we know that because our partners tell us often . We know the satisfaction and pleasure from seeing a well constructed plan come together . Keep things in perspective, some times even the best laid plans can come undone . Have Faith. Your players want to believe in you, they want to trust you and they want to be successful for you . Savour the journey, they will go the extra mile for you . Relish the successes, analyse and learn but do not dwell on the losses . Winning football games and premierships is extremely pleasurable but remember to not focus entirely upon it, forsaking the core aspects of life, family . friends and work .

If the players can sense your positivity and enthusiasm that may just be the fillip required to get them over the line and create that necessary spark . Glen Harrison Current Senior Player, Cau&ld Grammarian s Coach of Caulfield Grammarians U19's - 1999 Grand Finalists

The closeness of the D4 competition, or perhaps my poo r tipping form, was once again highlighted when all four of m y selections last week were incorrect . Therefore I apologize t o

the teams this week that I give the "kiss of death" to . Congratulations to Werribee Amateurs on their hard fought win that has booked them a ticket into D3 next season . The question now remains who will join them between the remaining Albert Park and Rupertswood .

i Fina l Albert Park, keen to put to rest the demons of their previous two defeats at the hands of North Brunswick during the home and awav, season, established their dominance in the first quarter against the wind and from that point on, never iooked back . North had no answer to the dominance of Dave Qverend up front while the Falcons strategy of matching up North Brunswick's danger men, in Murphy and Care worked to perfection and stopped North from getting any of their usual drive into their fonvard line . The changes flew thick and fast for North in the second quarter in an effort to peg back the two goal deficit, however, nothing could be done to penetrate the Albert Park defence of Wes Roe, Rex McLellan and Jim Sutton that held North goal less while six majors were added by the Falcons . 'With Latoufi playing valiantly for North . the Falcons relaxed somewhat in the third quarter to allow four goals straight late in the term to see North go into the final change six goals in arrears . The final quarter, however, was an Albert Park procession and they peppered the goals with ten scoring shots for the term and completely outpacing their opponents all over the ground . In a fine team performance, Albert Park ultimately took out the match by a :ell-deserved 57 points, and for North, it was a"straight-sets" exit from the D4 finals .

2s It was a wet and windy day as Werribee drew first blood against Rupertswood with Lovell and Carlesso scoring two early goals. Rupertswood, being somewhat stifled by the blustery conditions were also well held by the Werribee defence to see them kick only two points for the quarter. A Bradfield goal late in the quarter saw the Bees go into the first break twenty points ahead. Rupertswood came out attacking in the second quarter thanks to the tireless efforts of Burrows, however, the Werribee defence stood tall lead by the impenetrable Carson . Rupertswood's poor kicking, converting only two goals from ten scoring shots for the quarter allowed Werribee to weather the storm and be twenty one points ahead at the long break . The third quarter once again saw Rupertswood endeavouring to make inroads into the Werribee lead, but the great work in the engine room by 'Werribee's Keogh and Tedesco allowed the Bees to hold firm to go into the final quarter with a sixteen-point lead . The final quarter was true final's football, with the high pressure and drama one would expect for a spot in the Grand Final . With both sides

attacking the ball hard, scoring opportunities were at a premium, however, once again , Rupertswood failed to convert, and with a mid quarter goal to ~'~'erribee's `, :arinis it was enough to see Werribee into D3 and the Grand Final as they won by fifteen points .

A determined North took on a Mt .Lilydale team that was expected to give a good showing to make up for the disappointment of their senior s finish to the season . However, the met a North team that was strong all over the field and with Duson and Burrows providing plenty of drive, Mount were looking as though they were second rate from the outset . As Sorletto and GiIlard created many options in the North Brunswick forward line, Rotella was in a mean state of mind in the baekline, allowing nothing through . 'With too many winners over the field, North were simply too good in the finish as they won by 56 points.

2 nd Sem i Fi n a l The match between Werribee and Albert Park was an ticipated to be a close match, however, this was not the case as Werribee shot out of the blocks with three goals before Albert Park realised the game had started . Perhaps the Falcons were a little too cocky after winning fourteen matches in a row, and after the initial onslaught, the remainder of the quarter was an even tussle with 64'erribee going into the first break nineteen points ahead. The second quarter continued to be an even contest, with both teams able to sharing possession, and Steve Fairfield, Justin Norman and Jason Rowe playing well for the Falcons. However, it was 'Werribee that ultimately won the quarter to go into the major break twenty-five points ahead. In an untidy third quarter, both teams struggled to penetrate each other's defences, with Collier and Velisha good for the Bees, and it was Werribee that again edged ahead to be 32 points ahead with a quarter to play. The final quarter started just as the previous two had, with light . close football . However, it was mid quarter that Werribee took control of the match with three goals to Djakovic, two to Pugliese and one to Harding to put the match out of Albert Park's reach .

Pr e f? ; ji l iry Fina l SENIORS - Rupertswoo d vs Albert ParkWhat a match we have in store for the prospect of meeting Werribee in the Grand Final . Both teams have had fantastic seasons and thoroughly deserve their spots in today's match . In their previous encounters, Rupertswood has accounted for the Falcons twice this season, however, the thoughts of their M THF AMATFUR FOOTBALLER 2002

early departure from last season's campaign will still be stinging Rupo and they will be hoping that today is not a repeat performance . Rupertswood will be wishing for some finer weather today to suit their running style of game and allow the likes of Baines, Burrows and Co to weave their magic . On the other hand, the Falcons dominant forwards will prove a handful for the Rupo defenders and should they kick a bag, it could be difficult for the Sunbury lads . tlltimately, this result could go either way and it will depend on who wants it more on the day, hol:~ever, I have to give my kiss of death to someone . Therefore my sincere apologies to Rupertsivood as I pick them to shake the finals monkey off their back with a 4 point victory . sh SE RV ES - Albert Park i ; _ Albert Park take on a confident North Brune ek in the hope of setting a vvirming tone for their seniors 'to play later in the day. In their previous two meetings, both teams have won convincingly, with the Falcons winning the latter of their two encounters, filbert Park, after being exposed by Werribee last week trill be looking to the likes of Travis Green and Jason Rowe to lead the way again, however, they will be hard pressed to match the class of North Brunswick who will be strengthened by the return of several players from their defeated senior side . Ultimately, it will be this strength in quality players that will shine through as North Brunswick attempt to s Ivage something from the season when they win by 14 points to set tip a Grand Final against Werribee . PR ;S: One week's reports to go! Once again thank you for your great contributions all year. Reports to gauanfC~cieaneuent.com..au by ._idday Monday thanks.

SE Well it was not quite the fine sunny weather with light winds predicted on the long-range weather forecast! But at least the rain kept away during the game! The game began with Doxey at FF and Ross at CHF for Xavs and with Smith at FF and Mentiplay at CHF (great prediction!) for Old Brighton . The first 15 minutes saw both back lines well on top and a lot of bone-crunching collisions tackles and smothers . The ball was moving at a furious pace up and down ground . Xavs seemed to have more composure at the ball than Old Brighton and certainly a better system of moving the ball out defensively with the way they were switching the ball across the ground . Peel was playing in a FP ; Coach O'Bee sent the runner out to play further up the ground and to present himself. Result - 3 goals in 12 minutes, 2 from contested marks at CHF and an uncontested mark at HF - great coaching! Xavs replied with a good long goal from Lowrie to keep them in touch . The second quarter saw Xavs increase the work ethic, but it was O .B . who scored the first through Gadsden . Xavs replied with Doxey booting 2g in 3 minutes from HF after strong leads - now only 4pts down . Mentiplay marked uncontested at HF to goal just before half time to extend O .B .'s lead to lOpts . Best players for O.B . were Ryan and Dale across halfback . For Xavs Doxey was playing a lone hand up forward . The Premiership quarter saw O .B .'s kick the opening 2 goals in 20 seconds after four minutes of play, then 3g in five minutes and a further 2g in two minutes . O .B .'s ran hard at the ball, in numbers, carried the ball through the lines and kicked long into the forward zone . 5 goals of the 7 kicked were crumbing balls off packs . Xavs at this stage were shell-shocked, having only entered their 45m zone a few times for two majors . In the last, all Xavs! They continually attacked, but Coach O'Bee had his back line "flooded" and dropped two falls back - Mentiplay and Hogarth who took some telling marks. This was a terrific game of Under 19 football played in trying conditions! Bring on the Grand Final can't wait!

SECTION 2 Ormond stormed into the Grand Final after outlasting Old Trinity is last week's preliminary final. Nothing separated the sides all day with the lead see-sawing all game until the Monds greater physical presence, finals experience and never say die approach saw them get their noses in front at the final bell . The Mends forwards in Cook and Quincy

were key targets and again Captain Muzzell set

the tone for the day with his fearless approach . To OT's credit they matched Ormond all day and with Aitken, Healy and Stebbins giving their all were always a threat . To the victors goes the spoils and the Monds with Hassall and Rayson also prominent booked themselves a date with Old Essendon today. SECTION S Got the tip right but the result was closer than even the slender margin I predicted . It was Old Camberwell who began the better and held a handy first quarter lead . Tempone and Marwood were looking dangerous up forward for the Wellers ably supported by Payne and Clyne . Rupertswood hit back in the second to be within striking distance at half time . Enter Potter and Temming - five majors each and with Dressler on fire looked like an upset could well be on the cards . A last half to die for as both sides traded blows 7 goals to eight in Rupo's favour - but they fell agonisingly short by lpouit . SECTION OLU E No match played last week .

SECTION RE D In slippery conditions at Bulleen Park MHSOB a

nAquiasfondthegointughintefrsquater As the game unfolded MHSOB through the good pla3 of Fraczek, Folley and Moore began to take contro and with Captain Kogelman being closely guarder the Bloods were looking for some inspiration . Ente ; falls in White, McMullin and Alford for the Blood: who belied the conditions to help their side worl their way back into the contest . The trend of lov scoring continued with the Bloods Sorace, Bolan( and Crozier relishing the trying conditions, and the, would continue to do so in the remaining twi quarters to kick enough to book a date -,vith St Bernards (2) in the OF. Sierakowski appeared to b not fully fit and despite great efforts from regular Adcock and Raleigh the High were unable to fm something as time ticked by.

d -_CTt 0 1 .1 . 1 This will be an absolutely fantastic game, which wi be a showcase of VAFA Under 19 football . Bet, teams have areas where they can really hurt ea c M

other ; therefore the match-ups will be crucial . The SKOBS forward line boasts the strength of Gissing, the strong aggressive running and marking of Tredrea Chard and the goal kicking brilliance of O'Keefe . Whereas, the Old Brighton back line has the likes of McCowan at FB and probably the most aggressive running half back line in the U19's Ryan, Mentiplay and Dale. Old Brighton also boasts a formidable forward line structure with the manmountain at FF, Smith and high marking power of Peel across the half forward line . This will truly be a test for Captain Courageous Duggan and the human glove, Simpson . But it will be in the engine room and around the stoppages where this game will be won and lost . Gullifer v . Hogarth in the ruck, Kempton v . Furzer, Hutton v . Adamis, Ryan v. Gadsden, and Mount v . Leaf - the combinations can vary greatly . Bottom line - O.B .'s must stop SKOBS' on-ballers from creating loose men around the ground . Against Xavs in the 2nd semi, they provided their forwards with 22 marks inside the 45m corridor resulting in 16 goals . SKOBS on the other hand must not allow the free running O .B . on-ballers to gather uncontested balls in the middle to be kicked long and deep into their fonvard zone . In a cliffhanger, (1 point) the run that O .B . will get from their half back line will provide the difference . For Coaches Obee, Brown and Dempsey - good luck! Note : Whispers would like his videos back from the Coaches who borrowed them to help him prepare for Rep duties . SECTION 2 A barnstorming Ormond take on Old Essendon in today's GF in the knowledge that their recent form has been first rate . They also know the damage an unchecked OEG unit can inflict remembering back to Rd3. The Monds have come along in leaps and bounds since then and have nothing to lose today, while OEG has taken all before it and will start favourites . Forrest and Velrado are capable of booting big bags and along with May, Frazer and Rankin are all key players today . The Monds will look to Rogash to fire up against his old side and if Robbins, Quincy and Cook are on target up forward OEG may have their hands full . It will be a hard hitting affair with points likely to go to the last team standing. Ormond's run of late has been nothing short of fantastic and they will be well aware one more win will cap off a fairy tale year. OEG are planned and prepared, they will leave no stone unturned in their quest for victory and while I'd love to select the Monds with the heart, the head tells me OEG will win a ripper by 5 points .

CTION 3 So it's all down to today for the two heavyweights of the section . Old Paradians have taken all before them this season and while Old Camberwell have tested them at times in the most recent outings it's been the OP's . They boast an array of talent that the Wellers will need to be wary of the likes of Strickland and Spinoso are handy fonvards, add to this mix 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2002

Connelly and Allen and with plenty of others in form the Wellers will have their work cut out today . On the other side of the ledger the Wellers have plenty of big game experience and know that GF day is not about the previous meetings . Tempone and Marwood will present problems up forward if allowed free space and if Heddley, the Birrell's and Weaver get into gear the result may run their way . Overall I expect nothing short of a tremendous promotion of what's good about the VAFA U19 competition today with OP's to salute the judges for the final time in 2002 as winners .

SECTION B LU E Preliminary Final day sees Ajax meet Oakleigh at Bentleigh Reserve . The Jacker Boys must still be fairly upset with their last quarter fade out against the Blues. Whereas, Oakieigh will be charging into this game, buoyed by their terrific four-quarter effort in a very tough encounter. Oakleigh will have to play that hard physical game to close in the game around the Ajax runners, reducing the space for them to run into. Likewise, if Ajax can use the wide-open spaces at Bentleigh Reserve, kick the ball out there and run on to it, would be their way of creating some holes in the Jacker defense. In a cliffhanger, Ajax just - 3pts! CONTINUED PAGE 62

SECTION RED St. Bernards (2) go into today's game knowing that Aquinas have knocked them off this year and moreso recently so todays game should not be taken lightly . In all honesty given the fine weather predictions for the weekend, the faster, fleet of foot Bernies hold all of the aces . Madden, Garth, Hughes and Iannazzo are important elements to their side, add the likes of Maggiore and Govan and the Bloods will be up against it if they are not on their game . In saying that, the Bloods bigger more mature bodies will test the Bernies from go to whoa . Sorace, Kogelman, Parker and Alford if on song will cause plenty of headaches for David Law and his crew, they will also be mindful of Crozier and Beech who have stood out at times during the year . No secret that the Bernies will begin as favourites and today will get the bacon at game and season's end .
