MR CONSISTENCY Its a funny thing. When Brett O'Farrell played league football he couldn't shake the ghosts of the medical room, running into more injuries than a bung-eyed boxer and watching his game suffer as a consequence. The big man had no luck . He was delisted at the end of the year, and there was a sad ring to the parting. O'Farrell, a Prahran under-18 player who was taken by Sydney in the draft, had been earmarked for big things at Glenferrie Oval . But O'Farrell, hands tied because of reoccurring ailments, never delivered on his massive promise . Never had the fitness to do so . The funny thing is that O'Farrell . now 25, has been as reliable as a grandfather's clock in our competition this year . Opposition coaches have conceded it is one mighty job to find the right man to silence him . And it doesri t help that he spends equal measures of time in the ruck and in the forward line. It is a rare week that he doesn't figure as one of the leading goalkickers for Old Haileybury, or, for that matter, is listed in the best players. O'Farrell is thriving at his old school . There was a fair bit of talk about when he left the AFL, with rumours linking him to every second suburban club. But to O'Farrell, now a Channel Seven sports reporter, it was a simple choice . The fact that he now manages to string together games rather than quarters is a bonus. "Once I finished at the top level I just wanted to get back and play with my mates, get the enjoyment back in footy," O'Farrell says . "I sort of lost it a bit and I've just found it again, playing with my mates .

"I couldn't get on the field, which got a bit annoying, but I've run into bit of luck now, putting some games together . "It's a great comp, I mean it's high standard. But it always takes a while getting used to, the difference of the speed of the game and that sort of thing . "There's not that much difference, to be honest . I suppose the higher you go it's the speed of the game. The actual skills are the same - obviously if you train 9am to 5pm like the top clubs do there going to be a little bit better - but the main difference is the speed of the game . "Even the difference between B grade and A grade - the speed's gone up again this year." TODAY We trust there is a sense of relief among the University Blues , who cracked their first win for the year against Old Trinity last weekend . DeCrispigny delighted with seven goals. half of his side's total . But the Blues have been handed scant time to celebrate : they now face reigning champion St Bernards and will need to lift further to be in with a sniff . The Berates pulverised St Kevins with a surprisingly comfortable win last week and will be unbackable despite playing away . Old Haileybury was chuffed after beating Old Melburnians in a rematch of last vear's Grand Final at Junction Oval, and

2

THE

AMATEUR

tenacious Adam Flovd finished with five goals after a fine day. Nippy hackman Scott Goldsworthy was the man of the match . Old Haileybury is up against Old Trinity today and on form it is impossible to have Old Trinity . Old bielburnians and Old Scotch are both seeking to expand on their win columns a- . close losses to top-liners . Old Scotch spearhead Lu' Hawkins is in super form and will take minding. Match of tt, round . St Kevins . beaten like a drum by the Bernies, pla ;: the formidable Old Xaverlans in this week's game at VA',; headquarters . The Kevs have shown enough this year to warrant supporters bringing a few crumbs of hope to the game, but the Xavs deserve massive favouritism after another top display from Damien Orlando . And Old Ivanhoe continues its search for those elusive first pennant poin Marce llin to finish the round . They may need anothetagins r week or so to find them . Old Ivanhoe was blown away in the last 10 minutes against the Xavs after being competitive for most of the game. The usual suspects - John Stevens tried his heart out and was everywhere, Toovey in the forward line and Weddle in the ruck - did their bit but the gun is pointed to this mob's head . What's worse. Marcellin's forward line is white• hot, with Peter Spence, Darryl Mason and captain Andrew Treganowan slotting 16 between them last week .

I have been watching a variety of VAFA gan. :: the past month from D4 to A Section . Now th: an impartial observer, I have been able to sit bc and just enjoy the game, and some of them h s been just great games to watch . There is som e that really appeals to me about V,-zFA footy. T: _ genuine passion of each club ; the good-natured barracking, often very humorous and clever ; occasionally a self-appointed expert in the crowd making an idiot out of himself; and fortunately, on much rarer occasions, some abusive, bordering on obscene language . The last part is unnecessary and not to be encouraged but is part of the kaleidoscope that makes up the crowd at any amateur game on any weekend all over Melbourne . Being a former coach of many years, I find I inevitably watch a game through the eyes of a coach . I have looked closely at some of the tactics and strategies that coaching panels employ in amateur games . The most puzzling question that crosses my mind as I watch is : Why do VAFA teams try to use a Defensive Zone on kick-ins ? I am at loss to try to understand the motive behind this very common strategy? Yet I find the majority of tear- e .- --~ :- it, and have been doing so for the past 7- 00 ye : ~ . I am sure most coaches would be evaluating le effectiveness of this strategy but unless I am missing something, not one game I have seen this year has resulted in a consistent positive return for the zoning team . In fact, quite the opposite is true . Teams are regularly surrendering the next possession to the team with the football . Therefore, instead of having to kick out into play from the goal square, kicking side consistently have the next kick f some spot further into play . It all depends on h t and t'se ' 'c'r i- as `a how far into play that : : . sion is . ncleapo

-ea! -.y is, (like it or not) VAFA teams do not ~ the aerobic capacitv across the board for th e 14 players required to efficiently zone an are a ake it very hard for the kicker to find a target . at do they have the team discipline and self 'inc across the board that is demanded of AFL to purely focus on patrolling their own zones . The effectiveness of the zone d{ is immediately broken when just ONE playe r his area. Just one free running playe r becc i obvious target to the kicker . Then the . stands between a successful transfer on!-of the is the ability of the kicker to hit a target . e d a clear possession is conceded by So dthe sl '`ensive team who should be intent t1 as close to their goals as they on 1_ , can . C eriighten me? What is its real value? - s and strategies that have made Like so ., football, the drive for this their , particul : con-,s from players and coaches :per-saturation of AFL games that watching penetrate c >un e rooms . Players, (mainly) think, s do it, we should do it . Coaches cave well if AFL in to insist .:-__ player demands , "to keep the natives happyY' and here we have the creation of a strategy that is beyond the capabilities of most, if not all, VAF;? teams to execute properly . To ma it even more mystifying, 1 believe if a close s! is conducted by individual clubs over 5-6 ~ > >y would find, almost invariably, that they lose e next possession many more than they win . A . .d, if they . are being really honest in their analysis, th e of the possessions 'i achieve by zonin g at t cause of the ~ `.`fec ess of the zone bu t ; product of a poor ' 'ck to what was an who? Surely VAFA coaches are to merely imitate AFL coaches training whether a particula r ) the abilities of VAFA players and tee s of the VAFA game . Coach for 24 of the past 3 0 aanlv in the VAFA . ~ ''s ` : , sss~,~ ` Pofl_~! y helps produce The clean football . We believe that the game should be played in a free flowing manner where the most skilled or those able to team the better will prevail . We believe tactics that impede, obstruct, interfere with or invade others' personal space not be tolerated and those who engage in these tactics are reported for misconduct . Many say the key to our successes is our strong Alcohol Policy . The VAFA Executive has always felt there is a strong link between unruly spectator behaviour and consumption of alcohol, hence the great rule prohibiting the consumption of alcohol between the start of games and the end of play for the day . As stated any club can request an investigation into a matter that is believed to have been outside the laws of the game or has contributed to mental or physical pain . Minor infractions will see the VAFA offer the choice of a minor fine should the offender /offending club agree the offence was wrong, or alternatively offer the offender /offending club the opportunity of defending the allegation through the investigation process . These, and many more situations . allow our competition to operate in a safe environment, with mechanisms in place to deal with those who take it on themselves to bring the game, their club and themselves into disrepute . 19

jail' situation against the Hoes, with James Keem featuring again with the sealer following a big 'specky' . In addition to Keemer, Chris Beal and Stuart Simpson also starred for Yarra . Brad Hall, Damon Wood, & Ben Joyce were the Hoes picks in an even side . The Bl o ods kept tl rs honest in a close fought match, in,_:-cating the Bloods aren't far off the pace . The Aquinas on-ball trio of Leigh Toomey, Brendan Redwood, and Al Bethune strove valiantly all day . Michael Basile & Tony Bournon were strong up forward for the Panthers, while Danny Carroll & Anthony Palmer provided drive round th e ground .

hYf~-ra Valley --i; today's to p m~ The Bushrangers pace will trouble t .째 ithers, but the question is 'Can Yarra stop ' :.reman, Basile, & Bournon?' Problem is, th,_: Panthers are far from just a 3-man band, they've had at least 10 other goal scorers this season, and it's that ability to outshoot opponents which has so far kept them ;s . They will still be that way today r 7 rific game and a 2 goal win . E :rary '-a"s will be tug of war, with both i -mined to reverse their fortunes, ss are stronger up forward than the and that asset should give them a 3 victory.

The put in a big 2nd Hall at the Gary Smorgan to win against the Bears, after a nip & tuck lst two terms . Travis Gloury continued his good form for the Bears, well supported by Brad Willmore, Nick Taylor, and BIG Dave Williams . Jared Raleigh & Aiden Wollner were both in everything for AJAX, while Brett Duzenman also starred in his 200th .

AJAY c: i d Salesians no pushover, but will certa have an edge in leg speed and all round s. .ilis . If the forecast rain for today happens, and the surface is slow, Chaddie's work ethic & one per-centers game could easily cause an upset . However, the Jackas abundant talent should see them through for a 24 points win . Ivr:_,'re~ f-=- :anzpiiosi will test LT niver

today. especially if the ground is Both sides will be determined to atone i< rating losses last week, and they ,p fairly well . Ivanhoe Park doesn' t l t the problems for Blacks that it doe s some teams, and the visitors talls will te as many problems for the Hoes as vic e Blacks' backs are seriously stingy , 1 1 ; Eeir midfield should create sufficient -:ortunities for a very narrow win . i Blues face a hard day against -l eeza-'fearspl estcawe, but they are such an side that they should account for every ,n ;,ve the Bullants make . The Ashers defence Llhis year has been nothing short of amazing, only conceding 60 points a game! Another strength is their engine room, and today those midfielders and on-ballers should provide enough conversion chances for a 3 goals win . Says : The two most interesting results coming from round 5 was the La Trobe win over Fit= , teds whils t 's showing against a l

criterions ! - ost West Brunswick and ill be keen t o rebound from a drubbing of last week . The Westies have tanen the step up with aplomb and with Siebrand proving to be a headache for hackman, they should hold on . Fancy an upset when La Trobe takes on ladder leaders Peninsula . Latrobe's first few steps were a bit uncertain however they are now showing some fine form . Not off Peninsula's bandwagon but possible a loss is looming . Fantastic --me as Fitzroy host Old Carey. Glen Tavlor's team had a slow start to the season but the last few ~ s have been kicking the sweep . The Reds are in the middle of a mini slump . Tough one 1 sre, in _)e Old Carev . 11 be looking to rebound against Old "Playing the kids" is the call fro m Oa' ' ( ' ;h and no doubt the perseverance will pay off in the long run however Geelong should be able to make it 2 in a row . Finall" o travel to :aa with the home team no doubt keen to show their solid home ground form is no fluke . Peter Tyson must be niing running over that black cat injury wise and it is hard to see the Hawks beating Willy , hew Says: had a "disastrous" day last weekend . Bentleigh coach Paul Dimattina said that it was the worst loss that he had suffered in 15 years of coaching . He criticized his team for being unaccountable, being led to the ball and losing too many 50/50 contests . Whether they defeat West Brunswick or not, Dimattina is certain that his team will put in a better performance this week . Second placed West Brunswick recovered from their fright against Hawthorn to post a much more authoritative win against Oakleigh last week . The Demons' horrific run with injury gives the Magpies a tremendous opportuni',r record their fifth

consecutive win . The all conquering Peninsula can il l afford to lose their Melways this week, as they make one of the longesroad trips in amateur football to face ha ; - _- ; . L a Trobe will be very confident after they narrowly defeated Fitzroy in arguably the biggest upset of the year so far. The long road trip and La Trobe's improved form makes this a "danger game" for the Pirates . t3ak1e'igh coach Chris Moore will persevere with his youngsters regardless of how heavily they lose this year. This year, he has already blooded 12 U19's players . "From a future point of view, we're on the right line," he said . "if we have a system in place then we can take relegation .- Youngsters Ashley Kitts, Shane Collins and Liam Kennedy are three -Kindergarten Krushers" who have performed with aplomb this year. Old Geelong coach Michael Lockman is not getting carried away with his side's thrashing of Haw-thorn . He has challenged his team to win consecutive games, a feat that has not been achieved by the club for a few years now. rn's

dismal record on larger groun!i s

ted last week . The Hawks have lost their ,,y games - all on big grounds - this season verage margin of 105 points . Williamstown Ilant in defeat last weekend but coach Den e will not be as tolerant of a loss this week . ~,, i,t c lll have them back in the four, a loss will diem back with the pack . The winless Hawks I1 led in the last quarter of each of their hom e ,u::ies and will cause troubles for the CYMS . This week's match of the round features two likely finalists for this year : the rebounding Fitzroy and the rampant Old Carey . The Reds have lost their last two games and were extremely disappointing against La Trobe . Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen questioned the commitment of some of his players and will be eager to see his team display more mettle this weekend . Old Carey has kicked 92 goals in three weeks but will be hard pressed to continue their scoring spree this week . Coach Glenn Taylor is looking forward to the challenge of defeating Fitzroy, a side that his charges could not defeat last year. Fitzroy ~Zitds Senior Captain Steve Drury plays his 150th game this week, joining an elite band of only 5 others who have achieved this at the Reds . Steve joined the club as a raw 18 year old in 1994 and now has four senior best -and-faires is to his name . Steve has been a magnificent leader at the club - he led the senior team through an undefeated season in 2001, including the D3 premiership. The club is indebted to his contribution and we look forward to many more successful years at the club . Congratulations Steve . from all at Fitzroy Reds .

The students will be hoping to get back onto the inner's list against a refreshed Bulleen. The Cobras have been improving each match and should not be written off in today's game, however, the class of the Vultures runners id the dominance of Tate up forward ill be too hard counter. Therefore, I am going fc ;our Voal in to U-i Hi-h . v: BE The Saints hit the road for the first time this season, and in, find the unfamiliar surrounding of Brunswick difficult . Brunswick, still looking to break the duck, will be hard pressed though to match the likes of Jedda Wright and Francis Harrison and with Allen, Buyer and Schembri all doing well up for =rard, I' .ink the Saints .ill keep their top five ,,or : i a 29 point victc -~.- .

ust or each in the quest for a final b Old Ivanhoe won despite Monash haviof the play. Given a full team, I reckon 011 --ove too ' '-=ined for Marcellin r date a p1 ~',n the top four. ians, travel to Clayto . to ues, o i',sappointed last S at home I cai not see the Blues extendir the ze_ition leaders, who should win well agail . . I I- zet Prahran to return to the winning list at the

Zse of Collegians, whose defenders will not be to contain Butterworth, Cartledge and cc hroughout the match .

Salle again should be able to win over St o have only one win on the board . North. G_ [on 1 travel to Bulleen to play Old Trinity , wl. o ill prove competitive . The big ground coul d well test the fitness of Old Essendon, who have already proven formidable opponents this season . I select Old Essendon, whom I believe possess greater depth of talent than does Old Trinity. University Blacks should return to the winning list at the expense of their traditional rivals, Fitzroy Reds, who after an interrupted start to their season, have not met the expectations of many . At No 2 Oval, Elsternwick Park, Old Xaverians meet Therry Penola . Old Xaverians, who expect to ileld a very strong side may be buffeted by the physicallv stronger Then Penola players on the small ground . Nevertheless I forecast victory to the Old Xaverians ; gG me . in a hi i h Seutio.. St Leo's s ou d move further up the ladder by defeating A .J .x .X ., whose Round i confidence has quickly dissipated .

In what could be a Grand final preview the t o undefeated teams meet at bVhitefriars n azenod v-isit . The clash of the big men Bor.a ;_7 ' ''>idgland as well as the forward "sliao, out " v m Fothergill (Mazenod) and OF ;n tefriars) could provide the answer to whom will I favour Mazenod, who have the greater dept h of experience .
