During a radio interview last weekend I expressed the great sorrow and i a .i-ress that we all felt last week when the news came through of N o,~ .ui c;e's passing. I had just returned home from dinner out with my famil eyelbratinghf dyourngestahJown phone rang . By the time last weekend came around most of us came to th e conclusion that with football upon us, Noel would have wanted us to enjoy ~E NS the wonderful occasion of the VAFA finals and to begin celebrating his CHIEF EXECUTIV E -: : onderful life . Noel's influence on us all has been immense and his fatherly advice (Noel was OFFICER born on the same date as my father), professional guidance and persona l

assistance with some private matters have always made me full of admiration for the great man . Because of the significance of Noel's date of birth and date of his passing I will always be able to remember Noel when I think of my dad and celebrate my daughter's birthday .

! also think a memory of Noel will :loat through my head each day for the rest of my life . - _,~~s Noel - mentor, fat her-figure, work colleague, friend an d entertainer. Phil Stevens (Chief Executive Officer )

Please visit "For the Love of the Game" in today's centre page spread where President Richard Evans' magnificent tribute to Noel is reproduced in full for the enjoyment of all who could not be in attendance at last ivtonday's Presentation and Vote Count Night . the VAFA's full-time staff to provide a few I have also asked Brett Connell an d Sue Anderson from . words about Noel L . "I feel honoured to have known Noel Rundle . His commitment, passion and devotion to Amateur football was unquestionable . During the past 20 years Noel has been my mentor, advisor, friend and sometimes sparring partner . Noel's vibrant personality and his passion for life certainly made the office alive when he was working . His knowledge and recall of stories past and present kept us all entertained during our lunch breaks . Noel will be sadly missed at the VAFA Offices but my life is all the more enriched from knowing Noel Rundle . " Connell . "Noel. Without fear or favour one of the strongest role models any aspiring young ,,dministrator could ever have had. Your passion for life was infectious, your energy in a myriad of pursuits amazing and your general knowledge nothing short of inspiring, but above all you have left a n idelible impression in our short working relationship . Oh and by the way - I can never ever walk past in empty can again ! " L week I will announce the Most I3 . 9_-tPs(eniorclub) " "` ---as a i,ast Ivionday's Vote Count and F§'ese€at'.at'. nighly successful occasion and congratulations to al l inners and to the many, many people who like a hand in a love, carry out their roles as part of a committed team . as a fine player, but said he was utterly surprised to pilfer the prize . "They really didn't need to go down to that last round : it made me a bit nervous," Crow quipped afterwards . UNDER THE WEATHE R Sunday's match was played in Siberian conditions, with a bone-reaching wind and drenching down pours . And it was not lost on Tapping who the weather favored . "I suppose with their tall players, Haileybury wouldn't have wanted that much rain and wind about . "It was always going to suit us because we're quite strong on the ground . "The tallest team is out of the equation now and it'll come down to who's better on the day now . " SPEWING The bad oil for Old Scotch is that the nippy Nick Addison will miss the rest of the season with a broken hand .

Addison, a regular member of the senior team, adds "pace and grit to the side's celebrated onball team and is a harmful loss to the team . KES SENS E St Bernards, much like the AFL sides, have tinkered with its schedule to accommodate for the Sunday final . -

Instead of the trusted reading of the teams on a Thursday night the club will now move to Monday, Wednesday and Friday training nights with tea following the Friday session . 'T_ -E REMATCH Old Xavs and St Bernards revisit their rivalry in what should be a corker of a grand final replay at Sportscover Arena today .

TODAY'S TCHES A SECTIO N 2nd SEMI FINAL - September 7, 2003 SENIORS Sportscover Arena, Elsternwick - 2 p .m. Old Xaverians versus St . Bernards RESERVES Sportscover Arena, Elsternwick - 11 .20 a .m .

St . Bernards versus University Blues

On paper, the Xavs should romp it in : they won by 27 points in round two and by 111 in round 1 i . But the match will consist of several appetising match-ups and finals are a law to themselves . The Xavs will return back James Drake and Caydn Beetham after the important duo was struck down with the flu last week . Drake is a pivotal man for the Xavs . He pulls down bustling marks across half forward and needs to be a counter to St Bernard's goal kicking trio of Tim Harvey, Sean Neeson and Dan Jordan . They've bagged 138 goals between them . Both teams have made a mess of it of late : Old Xavs come into today with two straight losses, St Bernards' three .

Uni Blues - would like t!ongratulate Adam Terrill on reaching 50 Fames for the club (senior and reserve) . Adam is a successful member of a number of University under 19 teams and a member of the 1999 reserve premiership team . Returning to the club this season for a years travel Adam has continued his role as a great club man and editor of the unofficial Uni Blues publication . Well done Tiz .

Final's action start on a cold windy blustery almost Spring Day and try as they might the Tonners could not quite catch the in form De La Salle who live to fight another day .

dissipated with the in form De La holding on for a well earnt 9 point victory .

REVIEW The windy conditions was always going to make it difficult for both sides to show the full array of their talents but none the less it was a pretty good game under the circumstances .

Leigh Harrison was again very good for t : Blue and Golds and he received so] support from Sam Hyland, while little R Bonnici and the veteran Andrf Mackintosh used their vast experience their advantage . The Tonners were ve pleased with Raju's efforts all day, wh Perret, Hendra, Williams and Ewert we

An even first half saw the difference at only 5 points at the main break . Both sides had their chances to be further in front but were unable to capitalize and take their chances to secure a decided advantage, and so as they all went inside to take stock and regroup it was still anyone's game . The third quarter of any game has often been called the championship quarter, and the first semi was begging for one of the sides to come out and take ownership of the game . And it was De La Salle who did this with cleaner hands and greater numbers at the ball . The Tonners seemed to fall into some bad habits and showed a distinct lack of run, with their delivery and lack of cohesion going into the forward line particularly disappointing . And so at the orange break and final change compliments of a three goal quarter, De L had a 14 point buffer . With Old Brighton coming home with the wind was it enough?? Yes it was in the end because instead of taking the direct approach Old Brighton over finessed with the ball and went sideways, back ways and any which way rather than taking the direct avenue to goal . But you could not fault their endeavor and persistence . But as the final siren sounded their chance of going further into September had

all good . In the Reserves Old Brighton put in terrific effort and had the game sewn up half time . After a stirring speech frt Coach Connor Eames the Friars were more determined unit in the second h and even though they won the last quar the damage had been done . Adam Ginniv put aside his disappointment at bei dropped and reigned supreme, Walshy sa tough, Brook Logan Sherman and N Milat were all good, with the final camec Andrew Krzytvniak a game highli g

Stuart Cleven battled very hard for the Friars, Matt Nunan tried to manufacture things and Sam Alexander sowed plenty of run for the vanquished .

PREVIEW A spot in A-Grade for the first time in their histories is the reward in a couple of hours for today's combatants . Whitefriars have reigned supreme over the Bombers so far this season winning both encounters, particularly easily out at Friar Park and made to work a bit harder at Grammarland . The Friars absolutely love Sportscover Arena and have a good record in finals there, it suits their game plan and style of game . Old Essendon were perhaps in better form at the end of the Home and Away season, but as we have seen already in some of the other grades that means absolutely nothing, it all boils down to who is mentally attuned on the day . Both Frank and Greg should have no trouble motivating their troops today as the high stakes will see everybody determined to do well . You have to admire Old Essendon for their performances during the year in winning the minor premiership but finals are different and the Friars have been there done that and have plenty of finals experience . Both Anthony Carbone, and Sam Fleming are inspirational leaders and set the example for the others to follow . Love the Bombers and what they have achieved but just do not think they can contain the Pawlik's, Matt Power, Phan, Janson, Northey, Kennedy, Wood, Cunningham, Pasqualotto etc etc all day . These guys get so much of the footy that Buckets, and Anderson will get plenty of chances to have the twin calico's flying . The possible loss of Caridi in a trainin g

mishap last Saturday is not going to help the Grammar's cause either . The Brain's Kiss of Death this week is going on the Friars, I think they will win the game and advance to the top echelon of Amateur Footy and send Old Essendon to Sandringham to clash with De La Salle . In the Reserves my old school Old Paradians will beat De La Salle coached by my old mate Michael Hagen . PRESS CORRESPONDENTS ; 3 weeks to go . The track will be hard and fast at Sandringham, with no chance of mud . Much needed form reversal from the Animals, who have been convincingly beaten in their last two games . The Sharks to use the knowledge of playing at Sandy in the first semi final . This game is impossible to predict with confidence as a case can be made for either side . However, after being let down by the Animals last week I am going to go against them today. The Sharks played some very good footy in the first semi and with the week off will be going full steam ahead towards a Grand Final berth .

9.a;: 3eauffiaris - congratulate Chris Martin on his 100th V A on Saturday. A stalwart of the club, Chris is a dedicated Beaumaris footballer and has achieved much in his career including Best and Fairest and state representative honours . A footballer of such class deserves to earn the ultimate glory and all our best wishes are with "Marty" as he and the team strive for finals glory .

The C Grade B est & Fairest was decided during the week with Chris Massis from Glen Eira taking the honours . A fantastic effort considering his team only won 5 games for the year . Results were: C .Massis (Glen Eira) - 24 votes M .Frater (Caulfl - 2 1

M .Miller (Orm) - 2 0 The folloiving players were named as C Section MVP's and also included in the VAFA Team of the Year as decided by th e

"They showed our players what hunger and desperation meant . From that point of view, it was disappointing . " Pre v i ew After going through the home and away season unbeaten, Peninsula now faces the daunting possibility of bowing out of the finals in straight sets . That now is your obligation to Noel Colin Rundle - the man and his memory . England a few years ago at the of a iuuch loved Royal Lady, a 째s were read which I believ e as Noels' wishes for us and i ; z sure he would be esented here :

If I should die and leave you here a while, be not like others sore undone ,

who keep long vigil by the silent dust. For my sake turn again to life and smile, nerving thy heart and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine. Complete these dear unfinished tasks of mine And I perchance may therein comfort you .

In a high scoring game in D Whitefriars booted 15 goals to AJAX 10 after the first break to win through to the GF and also promotion to C . Reidy and Carrigg doing the damage up forcvard with 5 each while Pasqualotto, Power and Pawlik were their best common names also in B 2003 .

In a thriller in E Blue Old Camberwell rammed home 6 .6 in the last quarter to topple Peninsula OB in the Preliminary Final by 5 points . Leading goalkicker Doc Inkster with 9 the Wells best . Kew would finish too strongly for Richmond Central in the E White Prelim final . Bruno. Kalpakis and M Mascitti standouts for Kew . Monash Gryphons eked out a solid Prelim final win over Syndal Tally HO 12 .12 (84) to 6 .19 (55) . Poor kicking is poor football . Best were Urban, Raffaniello and Salaj (MG) and Bingham, Bennett and Kerrins (STH) .

Gaining promotion to respective U19 GFs were 2nd semi final winners Old Xaverians (Si), Old Scotch (S2), MHSOB (Blue) and Yarra Valley (Red). St. Bernards OC won the VAFA Blood Challenge some would argue they should have donated plenty given the amount of blood spilt at West Essendon over the years . Old Xaverians would honour Michael Blood for having played 100 games . VAFA rep 10 times, VAFA Captain, Club Captain, Jock Nelson Medallist '95 & 97 and '97 Woodrow medallist - Bloody had done it all .

VAFAUA Umpire Advisers were : Michael Sneddon . Geoff Ridd (Asst), Peter Gersch (Asst) and John Hall (Goal Adviser) .

A brilliant first term by Collegians and poor handling and disposal by Old Xaverians - OX 0 .0 at the first change and Collegians 5 .8 . It was catch-up football from then on with OX getting full value from their accuracy to kick 11 .5 but the siren saw Collegians at 12.17, 18 points ahead . Chris Pollock, Gary Irvine, Aaron Harrsion, David Hoyle, Mark Hibbins (Coll) were best . De La congratulated Matt O'Callaghan on 100 games and his enviable record of four successive premierships, in 1988 (U17), 1989 (U19), 1990 (Reserve) and 1991 (Seniors) .

It would be a replay of the second semi as Therry were far too strong for U Blues in the final term kicking 6 .5 to 3 .0. Best were Castaldi, Carter, Taylor (Therry) and Taylor, McIntyre, Frith (U Blues) . Mazenod created a couple of records in the C Section Grand Final when they defeated AJAX 29 .17 (191) to 11 .16 (82) . The Mazenod score was a record for a C Section Grand Final as was the winning margin . The starts were McLean, Chilcott, M . Murray, Belleville, D Murray, Morgan (Max) and Ricky Marks, Pat, Bloom, Droger (AJAX) .

34

In a thriller in D Section, St Bede's inaccuracy almost cost them the flag - they kicked 9 .13 while Old Geelong kicked accurately to go down by 2 points, „ 10 .5 to 9 .13 . Manton, Edmonds, Broom for OG's and Jones, McCarthy, Diggins for the . inners were be ,, Diadora's Coach of the Year was ' :azenod Premiership Coach. Tony Paatseh .

On one of the windiest days eve r Elsternwick Park Old Xaverians defea ., d Old Paradians 6 .18 to 5 .5 to go on to meet Ormond ~'7e Grand Final . OX won the toss and kicked to the scoring end . Old Paradians were well pleased at the first change after keeping OX to one goal . The second term was disastrous for Old Paradians as Rick Marks and David McKay lifted for Xavs and Paul Curtain was a fine loose man in defence . OX were in control for the rest of the game and finished full of running and with plenty of fire for the match of the season against Ormond . Dann, Meagher, Greetham (OX) and Canavan . McClements, Grills (OP) were best . Umpires were Greg Hardiman and Kevin Segota. Kew, after an inaccurate 1 .10 in the first term to Therry's 3 goals straight, were far too strong and although the margin was 11 points (7 .12 to 6.7) were never in danger. They could now meet Parkside who had established a supremacy over Kew in their last two meetings . Kalac, Griffiths, Duncan (Kew) and Quinn, Reddick, Flaherty (Therry) were under notice . Umpires were Paul Cherry and Cameron Swale .

On Saturday night after the A Section preliminary final Peter French asked the Executive to give selection for A and B premiership winners, The choices were A 10 Ormond, 3 Old Xaverians, B 8 Parkside, 5 Kew. VAFA Club Media Award went to Peter Ballantyne, Secretary of Elsternwick AFC who won a weekend on the Gold Coast for two, courtesy of Ansett Airlines and VAFA Travel . Congratulations on his 100th game to goal umpire Mark Serong who had started his career in 1984 at the early age of 16 . The VAFA entertained at lunch the 'greats' of'38 who represented the State at the second AAFC Carnival in Launceston in 1938 . It was wonderful to welcome Ray Steele (U Blacks) who was VAFA B & F at the Carnival . Clarrie Vontom (Collegians) (VC), Wally Taylor (Col), Jack Coulson (E'wcik), Jim Standish (Teacher's College), Doug Laver (Hampton Rov), Howard Day (Coll), Royn Mine (E'wick), Albv Rodda (State Savings Bank), Alex Guild (Old Scotch) . Two members died on active service in World War II - Bill Newton (Old Melurnians) who won the highest award for gallantry, the Victoria Cross in New Guinea and Pat Hoppe (Old Xaverians) .

Well, a convincing win against MonE " Gryphons in better conditions than the week before sees Swinburne University go straight into the Grand Final, clinching promotion to D2 along the way . Time will tell if they can take the big one in a week's time. In the meantime . . . . . . . . .(don't forget Team of the Year nominations! )

SECOND SEMI FINAL REVIEW After some exciting, physical, end to end footy early on, Swinburne got the first goal, and indeed, although both sides had roughly the same share of the ball, the Razorbacks were far more efficient with their possessions, while the Gryphons' first touch was lacking, dropping too many marks and unable to control the ball at the first time of asking . Their were more bum notes than the campfire scene in "Blazing Saddles ." Watson (Gryphs) versus' Milano (Swinny) was a good duel to watch, while Wells and Fragiacomo were influential of the half back lines for the Gryphons and Razorbacks respectively . Swinburne on-baller Adrian Fidler continued to rake in the possessions during the second quarter, while Dan Baxter was doing the same for the Gryphons . However, the pattern of the game in the first quarter carried over into the second quarter, although the Gryphs were able to make slightly more impact on the scoreboard . Swinburne seemed to be more aggressive at the ball, and were definitely more sharp taking the ball out of their defensive half. Despite the three quarter time scoreline, Monash Gryphons, inspired by 200 gamer Jon Blandford and Tim Gilchrist started to assert themselves more in the third term, and could have made up more ground on their opponents had they made more of their scoring opportunities . However, the likes of Fidler, Whiting and Eager continued to win

'

A

possession after possession, giving th e

Razorbacks plenty of drive heading forward . Holland's defensive duel with Murchie was another highlight with the Gryphons hackman having the better of the contest, despite Murchie's three goals at the end of the day . After a dour struggle in the early part of the last quarter, Swinburne broke through for the first goal of the term, and still looked full of running, compared to their opponents, who for the most part looked considerably more leg weary. In the end, the Razorbacks were too good, running out winners by 47 points, again a similar margin to their two contests during the home and away season .

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIE W Monash Gryphons back up this week against Rupertswood, who won the first semi final a fortnight ago against South Melbourne Districts by a comfortable margin in the end, despite the poor conditions . Monash have beaten Rupo in both encounters this season

during the home and away matches, although I'm sure the boys from Sunbury will fancy their chances, given they won last week, and also won the D4 Premiership last season . However, momentum alone won't get you up the grades, you have to have the footy to go with it and both teams have a style of game which could serve them well in D2 next season, but unfortunately, only one of them will get to go through . As mentioned earlier, Rupo have failed to kick a winning score against the Gryphs this year, despite having the best attack in the competition . The Gryphs backline seem to match up well against the Rupertswood forwards, and in Paul Holland, have one of the form defensive players of the last couple of months . He should be especially confident after his efforts on Murchie last week . Rupo

r.lonash G ryphons could be acknowledging as many as three milestone this week . Firstly, Jordan Stratford, mentioned last week, was not selected, so if he plays this week, he will bring up the magical three figures . Also, Paul "Dutchy" Holland is scheduled to play his 100th game this weekend . The Dutchman has been around the club since 1996 and is best known for his defensive prowess and the ability to talk the leg off a wooden chair. He has been in terrific form since returning to the senior line-up in the middle of the season after mainly playing reserves football the previous few seasons . "Di" Nick Rutherford is the third possible milestone, due to play his 50th game for the

Tough to pick a winner at this stage, especially taking into consideration the weather, and injuries . However, given that the Gryphons have already beaten Rupo twice this season, I can't see why they cannot rebound and defeat them for a third time, especially if the likes of Flowerday, Gilchrist and Pocock get their freak on . I feel it will be deja vu all over again, and pick Monash Gryphons by 7 poi ts . However he is still waiting for the Gryphs to produce the goods on that front . Seriously though, Nick is a greatly skilled player whom the Gryphs hope to have for at least another 50 games . Answer it they did with an emphatic opening half, kicking seven unanswered goals to overwhelm the hapless Dales from the opening bounce . The onslaught continued in the second half, and with Rose taking marks at will, Hams and Craeknell repelling everything in defence and Dolence completely dominating the ruck, the students registered a further five goals before the Dales finally got their first for the day. Mount's Flanagan, Maniscaichi and Rhodes tried gallantly to put some respectability on the scoreboard in the iinai quarter, however, much of their efforts were in vain as the students recorded their best win for the year, running out ten goal winners . Albert Park went into the lst Semi Final against St .Mary's as strong favorites and were immediatel > into attack . However, their opportunities were wasted as ten scoring shots for the quarter only brought home two majors compared to the Saints one straight. With Phil Chambers and Matt Hvams working well around the packs, the Falcon's accuracy improved, however, thanks to some good play from Schembri and Valentine, the Saints managed to outscore the Falcons to go into the major break only 3 points down . After half time, it was the Falcons kicking with the wind that came out on top, but again kicked inaccurately with only Sean Robinson, Steel YeKerrou% and Shaun ti'enables able to kick major s from the team's eight scoring shots .
