SPORTSCOVER MAJOR SPONSOR VAFA
Much has been spoken and written about the Parkdale Football Club (Souther n Football League) and Mentone Vultures AFC proposed merger. Recentl y
members of Parkdale overwhelmingly accepted the motion " to merge with th e Mentone Vultures Amateur Football Club and play in the VAFA from 2004 o n wards, conditional upon the Executive of the VAFA agreeing for the merged entit y to commence in C section of the VAFA . " To canvas any objections to this proposal before it is considered by the Executive, PHIL STEVENS the VAFA will hear from any interested VAFA clubs ( this coming Monday at 6pm) and will meet with the Southern Football League, as the VAFA is mindful of CHIEF EXECUTIVE making decisions which may adversely affect our highly respected neighbour . This OFFICE R information, along with the formal application from Parkdale and Mentone Vultures, where it (the potential merged club) has to address certain criteria, will be considered by the Executive Committee at its October seminar . The practice of runners, trainers an d water-carriers remaining on the field after having performed their specific duty - runners (delivering a message) ; trainers (attending a player in need of medical assist ance) ; water carriers (delivering water only to a player in need) came to a head during last weekend's matches . It has been obvious over the last few weeks, that with possibly the excitement of a finals match, these officials have been remaining on the field making no effort to leave . Some officials are even remaining on the field and actin as an intermediary for other officials in passing on messages to players or obstructin play deliberately . Normally umpires will control this practice but often they are busy with the game and ~o not notice such happenings . The Executive Chairman has instructed me to inform clubs that should a duty officer notice any of the above takin~ place he will, at the next major break in play (1/2 time, 1/2 time, 3/4 time), speak to the offender and him/her that they cannot participate for the rest of the game and that official cannot be replaced by another official . Breaches during the final quarter of the match may see the duty officer advising a club official, such as a team manager, that the offending official is to remove himself/herself from the field, not to be able to return or be replaced for the remainder of the game . The reaction to this directive from the clubs will have a profound influence on the Executive Committee's thinking in regard to officials on grounds in 2004 . At the recent Vote Count an d Presentation Night St Bernards won the Under 19 Quit SmokeFree Most Disciplined Club Award, Each senior section's winning club receives $1,000 for its win . These clubs are A section Old Trinity; B section De La Salle; C section aulfield Grammarians ; D1 section Monash Blues ; D2 section Bentleigh ; D3 section Kew and D4 section Bull een Cobras . These awards are based on ratings given each match by the umpires (out of 5) for the behaviour demonstrated of each club's players, officials and spectators . The VAFAUA is also awarded $1,000 for the extra paperwork that is required on their part . In my travels around finals venues over the last few weeks, many people have asked why the Amateurs charge at venues when we do not during the home and away games . The answer is twofold - and it is not that the VAFA is money-hungry! One - gate receipts from the finals series make up approximately 10% of th e
required income for the year, following income from affiliation fees (60%) and sponsorship (30%) . Secondly to provide class venues such as Sandringham, Preston, Collingwood and Central Reserve, for example, payments from councils or ground managers are required to be made by the VAFA to secure such venues . The alternative would be to play finals at our own venues and recoup lost income through higher affiliation fees . In charging we always make a conscious effort to ensure our charges are lower than those of other competitions .

"No comment," he said when asked to name his preferred winner of Old Scotch and Old Xavs . "Why should I give ammunition to one side or the other? " Fair enough, too, with Nicholson pointing to the weekend of upsets in the AFL as a timely comparison .
ON THE MENU The match that jumps at you like fat in a frying pan when _vou look at today's preliminary final is the corresponding clash last year, when Old Xavs won by 33 points . In that game, Old Xavs were served well by popular full-forward DanielRichardson, who bagged seven goals after some strong marking . There was also a howling wind, one which kept Old Scotch from kicking a goal towards the Glenhuntly Rd end . As for today, well, Richardson is no longer there and the wind is in the grip of the weather gods .
More realistic previews can be lifted from this year's home-and-away season, where both matches were bite-the-nails episodes . Old Scotch won by 22 and five points respectively and if there's anything we've learned it is that they'll look for Luke Hawkins, who kicked five and three goals in the two matches .

The scene was set for battle with the, Grammar finishing 2 games clear on top of the ladder, while the Friars took great confidence in the knowledge that they had enjoyed a combined winning margin of 125 . points in their 2 home and away outings As expected the game started at a frenetic pace with both sides making some uncharacteristic errors but it was the Bombers who settled first to play some good football . The Friars were thankful at the first change for the opposition's inaccuracy as they went in 10 points down when it should have been 5 goals . The pattern continued in the second term as Old Essendon won the footy in the mid-field, moving it beautifully through that area through Biggs, Leask, and young tormont, and were now beginning to convert their chances in fron t
. it was worr}nn signs for the Friars who of goaleternally were gratefurfor the dogged efforts of the backline led by Tom Langford, Rob Paqualotto, and Luke Swain . Langford in particular, described by some as the Tim McNeil of the 21st century, was magnificent in continually scrapping to make it as hard as he could for the opposition . It was some of these efforts which forced Old Essendon to continue to fritter away chances in front of oal as they looked set to take a 28 point buffer into the main break, before a timely goal on the siren felt the Bombersg were stillttrain g comfortably and but for their wayward kicking should have been further in front . big stage of finals, he did it last year this same day, and he duly provided a couple of memorable last term goals, including a pearler while tucked on the boundary . Another 6oa1 quarter completed the most memorable of Friar performances with 17 majors to three in the second half, which not only sends them into the Grand Final but also puts them into A grade in 2004. The Bombers totally devastated, left to lament what may have been . This is an outstanding achievement as it is the first time Whitefriars has reached this level in its short, but illustrious 17 year history and the day will go down as the greatest ever for the club . In the Reserves the De La Salle unit superbly coached by Michael Hegan were far too strong for Old Paradians still suffering from a flu virus that spread through the club . The veteran Pat O'Callaghan in the ruck was a thorn in Parade's side all day and finished with four goals . Other good players were McInerney, Hyde and Laragy ,
ages nearly named them all but space does not permit . Another veteran in Paul Walsh was good for OPS' Receiving support, from James Collins, Jeremy Swindon and Tony Lombardi . PREVIEW Today sees the last chance for Old Essendon and De La Salle to earn the right for a crack at Whitefriars . For 21 guys it will be the last time they pull on a boot for some 6 months so no holds barred for a full on attack on the little red footy . Would have been a tough week mentally more than physically out in Bomberland as Frank and his brains trust would have worked hard to put the memory of last week's second half fade out totally in the background . Can they totally erase it is the big question and I'm not sure my answer to that is Yes . Mr. Miller and his cast of thousands would have analyzed the Bombers game plan and strategies many times over and will be sure they have the plan to counteract anything different that may happen today. De La will be refreshed by the break and are in pretty good form, but you don't finish two games clear on top of the ladder if you can't play football . Sandringham presents no advantage for either side, so tipping the winner is hard . Alle edly I am not allowed or supposed to pick the B~ue and Golds again this year, so in what I believe to be an error of judgment I won't and will stick the Bombers without any belief at all.

a Review The pre season premiership favourites 3 m stormed into B Grade with a barnstorming second quarter against the disappointing Animals . With no howling gale, the game was played in unusual conditions for Sandringham in front of a large crowd . The Animals started very well, as Paul McGloin was looking very dangerous every time the ball moved forward . A set shot after the qtr time siren from Steve Buckle pushed the lead out to 19 points and gave them all the momentum . The rain started to tumble in the second and so did the Sharks goals, as they slammed on a lazy 9 goals while the Animals were held to nothing in a match winning period. Michael Matulick started to control the centre of the ground, feeding his onballers, which included regular backman Chris Martin . Luke Buller was everywhere and even had a Cupido like minute, booting 2 in succession to finish off the quarter. The Animals as expected came out hard in the third quarter but could not get past the likes of Tim Collins and Matulick dropping back in the Animals hole . The last quarter was played in junk time, as the game was dead and buried at orange time . The match up between Murray Pitts against T .McCann in the goal square was the highlight of the day, with honours slightly going to Pitts with 4 goals . Anthony Ballard tried hard all day for the losers, as did Steve Ronchi shifting between back and forward, Brayden Haynes enjoyed a day up forward creating many opportunities for his forwards and sneaking in 3 goals of his own in a polished display, The Slewps boys would be shattered to go out in straight sets after mixing it with the best in Crunch grade all year. Preview Grand Fina l Collegians v Beaumaris at Eisternwick Park Head to Head Rd 6 Beaumaris by 27 points at "Shark Park"
Rd 18 Collegians by 12 points at "Harry Trott"
Four weeks ago a t 5pm the Sharks were probably penciling in venues for Mad Monday after losing their final game against the Lions. However as fate would have it they survived in the four by a percentage point and today find themselves in the Grand Final against the Lions . The ledger is all square at one apiece after both sides won their respective home game . Beaumaris won their game at Shark Park while they were running hot and appear to have recaptured that form after demolishing the Animals by 82' points in the prelim . Collegians form in the seconc half of the year has been nothing short of solid aftei questions were asked about whether they coulc beat the top sides early in the season . Both sides have the luxury of having some ver talented footballers in their side and will rely ol their big guns to fire to ensure victory . Murray Pitt looked very dangerous up forward last week an was given tremendous support from the towerin Sean Coote . The Sharks also have the flexibility c

throwing their line up around where needed . They also have the advantage of having the best ruckman in the comp in Matulick, which is a massive advantage at EP . The Lions on the other hand have forward line potency of their own with the goal kicking machine Jono Dixon (81 goals), Brock Mooney & Shura Taft . Ali 3 are capable of kicking a bag on their day . Coach Hawkins will rely on midfielders Shinkfield, Harrison & Hosking to get on top . The key to their side's hopes may well rely on ruckman Dave Atkinson, who has a huge task ahead . Both sides have beaten the Animals convincingly to get here after Collegians second semi win by 48 points . The Sharks have found their form at the right end of the season and have the guns to trouble the Lions . However Collegians form for the past 12 weeks has been top notch and with the extra weeks break under their belt will have more run in their legs around the expanses of EP. Collegians to win by 15 points. Reserv es Collegians v Old Camberwell Head to Head Rd 4 Collegians by 39 points at "Harry Trott "
Rd 13 Collegians by 26 points at "Gordon Barnard" The Lions have been the dominant side all year and have kept OC to fewer than 5 goals on both occasions throughout the year. It will be a stronger OC this time with some senior players thrown into the mix, but the Lions will hold their form to start the day off well for the club . Team of the Yea r
After much deliberation and several heated discussions the Crunch Grade team of the year has been decided . The line up is as follows : Backs: T .McCann (Slewp) Heffernan (OC) Martin (Beau )
Half Backs : Haynes (Beau), Credlin (OC) Buckle (Slewp )

Beaumaris - congratulate Jono Holt on playing his 200th game this weekend for Beaumaris . "Holty" is a club stalwart and champion player who has come through the junior ranks at Beaumaris where he won numerous B&F awards . Playing his first senior game at 16, Jono has been a courageous and tough competitor for many years . He has been club captain and a senior best and fairest winner as well as being a great contributor off the field . Good luck to Jono in his 200th game . Pleased to announce that Zane Goold from Mulgrave was announced as the winner of the VAFA/MSJFL (Moorabbin Saints) Most Promising Umpire Award . Zane received a trophy from the VAFA and his parents $100 which must be used to help Zane's education expenses next year . Hopefully Zane sees the VAFA as a terrific pathway to becoming an AFL umpire . Zane's profile is as follows : Turned 17 on 17/7/03 ; Umpired U15 West GF on Sunday September 7th ; Umpired in the MSJFL for the last 4 years ; Possesses a great temperament and laid back style ; Older brother Matthew also umpires in the MSJFL . Well done Zane and all at the VAFA wish you well for your future in umpiring .

Close finishes in reserves matches in many finals matches last week has seen the VAFA announce that the A section finals will commence at 2 .10 pm due to the fact that reserves A section matches are 25 minutes plus time on per quarter whilst other sections are 20 minutes plus time on per quarter . All going well, with the 11 .20 starts (A) an d 11 .30 start s ( other sections) there will be a reasonable break between games for warmups and presentations . . . . .except if there is a draw in a reserves final !

A big thank you to all VAFA people u swelled the crowd at St Andrews L Thursday's for Noel Rundle's memos service an d for attending the wake back Noel's beloved Elsternwick Park . The ph below was a stark reminder to all during I week of the great man, and how (as in photo) he dominated the EP landscape .

In this event extra time is played . Both teams cross straight over (no address from coaches) and play 5 minutes plus time-on followed by a break (coaches can quickly address teams) then teams change ends and play another 5 minutes plus time-on . 0
particular, Company Secretary John Pit (father of Beaumaris's champ Murray), a Simon Jefferson (Head of JF) and Bre Jefferson, former Collegians' champion pla} and Dealer Principal of the JF Group head the opposing teams .

It must have been guarded discussions during breaks at Jefferson Ford - Mentone over the past week . Reason why? With Collegians playing Beaumaris in this Saturday's C section Grand Final it's a "who's who" of both clubs at Jefferson's . In

Speaking of feats, what about this one? Old Xaverians' stalwart Tony Landrigan has just played in his tenth consecutive premiership Club XVIII 1994, 96, 97, 98 , 99 , 2000, 01, 02 03 and Reserves 1995 .

" Presidential Girl Power" is looking pretty good in the VAFA at the moment!! With Old Xaverians' D avina Connors-Calhaem's team still very much in the A section premiership race, Carol Nichols' Monash Gryphons in the D3 section grand final and Monica Lawson's Mt Lilydale in the D4 section finals it will be interesting to see if the gals can get 3 out of the 7 senior premierships available . 0

Interestingly, once again, there are no "live" entries in the "Sportscover Pick The Seven Premiers Competition" which carries a $ 1 0,0 00 first prize if one of a club's two entries could (alone) complete this feat . Many entries competing however, for the $1,000 consolation prize .

Former South Melbourne, Fitzroy and North champ John Murphy is looking at getting involved in Amateur football, either as a coach or as an official . "Murph" was most recently GM of VFL club Coburg and can be spoken to on 0419 3 74937 .

Avid FTLOTG reader Howard from Old Carey writes to say he read with interest in "Looking Back" recently that Old Melburnians' pair Andrew and Tony Witts played 400 games between them for OM's . Howard reports that the brothers Elliott played 68 5 between them - Richard (275), John, yep "Big Jack" (250) and Ross (160) . Begs the question . Can any other brothers exceed 685 VAFA games played?

D1 SECTION GRAND FINALS AJAX takes its place as the 2nd Promotee for 2003, so well done to the Players, & to Jeffrey Jankie, Peter Kagan, and their dedicated crew . Fantastic effort! The very best of good fortune to Monash Blues & AJAX today! Many thanks to Bernie Brennan the D1 Finals Co-Duty Officer, and our champion Cheltenham gate crew for the series, Anne, Charlotte, Hannah, Jenny, Lynn, Madi, Melanie, Michelle, Alan, & Ross . And a very special thank-you to our host, Stephen Kneen, President of Cheltenham FC, who has made things happen, impeccably! Thank also to Simon the scoreboard pilot . PRELIMS WRAP U P Reserves Monash Blues ground out a hard earned . win over Banyule in an intense encounter The Ashers tight defence finally won the day against a great bunch of Bears who persisted to the end . Paul Nevill played a top game in the Ruck, well supported by defenders Jono Moresi & Blocker McCormick . Seniors put on a brilliant Ajax and Old P/ientonians display of ball handling and rapid movement with the Jackas seemingly in command at Half Time courtesy of their power-laden forwards . After a long stoppage early in 93 while the gallant Chad Twentyman was carried from the field with a bad head cut, the Panthers came alive and slammed on 6 unanswered goals to start Q4 with a narrow lead . The Jackers then recomposed themselves and dominated the last term for a comfortable win . Elliot Janover, Gab Dukes, & Danny Weislitzer, kept the ball moving for the Jackas, with Jason Brain strong in defence and what can be said about Julian K, just amazing! For the Panthers, Carter & Dart played super games, with Basile & Ferguson also standouts .
GRAND FINALS Reserves AJAX Monash

resume their friendly rivalry to decide which one owns the lst Flag up for grabs today . With little or no advantage to either because their Ones also meet in that decider, I will be guided by overall performance and choose the Ashers to win a close encounter mainly due to their nigh on water-tight defence . Seniors The Ashers and Jackas clash again in hopefully better conditions than their 2nd Semi encounter, so the real attributes of these two spectacular teams can be seen to best advantage . For sheer football ability I rate the 2003 Ashers & Jackas as the best Di sides I've seen in my time with the Section, and I'll probably offend both by even ranking them above their respectiv e

I see no point in undertaking a detailed line by line comparative analysis, because, in the end, the game will be won by relative variances of millimetres, milliseconds, and the quirky bounce of that confounded Sherrin ellipsoid . Collectively, these three variables of position, time, and direction are called 'one percenters', and it is the players' individual & collective concentration on those 'minima', that will decide the colour of the 2003 D1 Section Pennant . The outcome will go down to the
AJAX - congratulates Grant Samuel who played his 100th game last week against Old Mentonians in a game he'll never forget . Starting with the U19s in '96, Grant floated between the Seniors & Reserves, picking up a couple of Flag medallions on the way . Following a 'wilderness' year in 2001, his passion was rekindled in 2002, but just when he was leading in the Club B & F an injury in R9 stopped him dead! Sammy came through a solid pre-season this year, played every game, and is hoping for another Premiership memento today !

What Ed Says: Review D2 has certainly been blessed with some great final's action and the preliminary final was no exception. Warm favorites Peninsula had to fight all the wav over West Brunswick . To call the Westies effort gallant would be to underrate their performance . Poor use of the scoring end in the first quarter was always going to put the Westies under pressure however they hung in their against the powerful Pirates . A sixteen-point loss however 29 scoring shots against the winners 25 told the tale of the inaccuracies . Fantastic year for Julian Siebrand and his club, no premiership hangover and so close to the double jump . On the other hand, Peninsula deserved both the re-match with the Reds as well as promotion . With the likes of stars Payze, Dentry and Teelow firing the Pirate machine was able to march into the Grand Final . Preview Despite some challengers through the year, ultimately the best two teams reached the final day . Respective coaches Burgen and Sill can be extremely proud of their clubs though that will count for little on Saturday . Like most Grand Finalists, both sides have a mix of disciplined defence mixed with attacking flair . The Pirates have guns such as Murray, Dentry and Teelow holding sway down back whilst the Reds rely on Cairns and Drury (watch for his kicking exhibition) to hold the fort . Up forward, Payze is all class for Peninsula whilst one of my favorites, 'Dacca' Diacogiorgis, is one the canniest players going around and loves the big time games . I fancy the matchwinners may either be Cahill for the Reds or Murphy for the Pirates . Really hard call . Peninsula were the class act during the year whilst Fitzroy have timed their run to perfection . OK, Reds with Dacca to kick a goal after the sire to secure victory by two points! What Andrew Says :
Preview Despite the two best teams making it through to the Grand Final, this finals series has been full of surprises ; Fitzroy 's upset of the previously unbeaten Peninsula and Old Carey's early exit being just two of them . ] But the biggest surprise has been the extent to which Peninsula has come back to the field . Th e

was full of praise for the vanquished . "Julian (Siebrand) has done a great job to get their from a lower division to the finals,- Sill said. "I've got a lot of respect for that side . " The Grand Final is Peninsula's chance foi atonement : a chance for them to avenge theiv humiliating loss against Fitzroy . And Sill thinks hi: side is better prepared this time . "We were probably ripe for the picking in man, respects coming into a final's campaign hein~ undefeated," he said . "Now that we have been beaten and had to play hard fought final, the guys have learnt a bit of lesson in terms of hunger and what's required in final, " For Sill, stopping Fitzroy's midfield dynamo L'v Cahill was high on the agenda .

"There are probably three players for them - Cahill is the main one -who we know can play good footy and our midfielders need to be on top of it ." Although the match is still a few days away . the mind games have already started with Sill claiming his side was the underdog . "The pressure is now on them . " "They're the ones who have got through first . We're the ones who have had to stumble and now come back. " "They'd have to go in as favourites . " This was a point Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen would not dispute .

"We have to be," Burgen said . "We absolutely have to be ." Had Burgen been a bookie at TAB Sportsbet, he said he would have offered odds of S1 .40 to $2 .70 . From talking to Burgen, it's hard not, to put the house on it . "I think we are well rested and we have our best footy still to play," he said . "We are very excited for the contest and confident after what we saw on the weekend . " With the week off to freshen up and reflect, Burgen said his side could not be better prepared for the match . "We've had all the hard games and had the conditioning . " "I couldn't be happier with where we're at . " "I'd like Lou Bvrne back but other than that I wouldn't change a thing . " Summary Peninsula and Fitzroy are the two best sides in the competition and deserve to play off for the premiership . While Peninsula has looked awesome for much of the year they have had two extremely tough matches in the last fortnight . In contrast, the Reds have had the luxury of a week off . This will be a tough low-scoring slog and will suit Fitzroy to a tee .
;?,:_ins : : . O. -~ . - congratulates Michael Goldthorp on reaching the milestone of 100 games for the Pirates and true to his style, he has timed his run perfectly to grand final day . Since joining the club in 1998 and continuing the tradition of hardness at the ball shown by all wearers of the No . 3 guernsey, "Goldy" has been a highly skilled performer, renowned for his baulking - in fact he prides himself on it . Never one to use formalities in his request for the footy, his simple "Yep, yep, yep, mate, mate, mate" has stood him in great stead over the years . From all at Pirateland, well done Goldy! We look forward to the next 100 . Fitzroy Reds - congratulates balding father figure of the senior line-up Steve Addicott who plays his 50th game for the club in today's Grand Final . This father of twins relishes the physicality of the game and can be seen before the first bounce hunting the opposition with his trademark hunched prowl around the centre square . During the week, he will do endless laps of the track in the dark after training, probably plotting his next kill . A winner of the senior best-and-fairest in 2000, he is also favoured to win the Reds "Allround Mr Nice Guy" award amongst stiff competition for 2003 . Steve encapsulates the spirit of VAFA football on and off the fi,Id and all at the Reds faithful hope that he can ~n nr for a few years yet . Well done Stevie A .

Collegians won their second successive 'A' Section premiership in shocking conditions . Three goals down with 10 minutes to go, Old Scotch's position looked hopeless, then they got two goals but Collegians defenders stood firm and they won by a goal, 9 .6 to 8.6 . Old Paradians, beaten by Uni . Blacks in the second semi, went to a 6 goal lead in the first quarter only to see Blacks come back and lead narrowly at half time . Parade again took a good lead in the third term and maintained their advantage until the finish 21 .13 to 15 .14 . V'icHealth Well, this is it, the last D3 game of the year, and fittingly, the two best teams at the end of Round 1 8
have fought through to the big one . So sit back, relax, enjoy what will hopefully be a fitting finale to a sometimes fantastic, sometimes frustrating, but always fascinating season of D3 football . PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW It was a thriller at McHale Stadium, with people on the edge of their seat (or feet, if they were standing), culminating in a dramatic last minute finish . Rupo scored the first goal quite early in the game, only for the Gryphs to reply quickly through George Harrak. Nick Rutherford also got quite a bit of the ball early, while Wells and Flowerday were also influential for the Gryphs . Rupo finished off the quarter strongly to trail by five points at quarter time . The game continued to go from end to end in the second quarter, as both teams' defences stood quite resolute, with Monash's Roche, Brett Coxhead, and Baxter in particular asserting themselves on the game . Clark bagged a brace of goals, and indeed the Gryphs extended their quarter time lead by this amount to be in front by 17 points at the main break. After both teams began the third quarter unable to convert their opportunities, Rupertswood started to get back into the game courtesy of a Klaaysen goal from a 25 metre penalty, which was followed up quickly by another goal to put the men from Sunbury within five points . Watson goaled for the Gryphs after an end to end passage of play that was all Monash, before Klaaysen scored another six pointer from a very tight angle right on the siren to bring the deficit back to six points .
Rupertswood by now had gathered up a fair head of steam and that momentum saw them peg the Gryphons' lead back to a point, then level, then briefly take the lead after the Gryphons surrendered a rushed behind . The game continued to be a dour struggle until, with 20
seconds left on the clock, Tim Gilchrist gathere d the ball and, under terrific defensive pressure, put it through the big sticks to give the Gryphs a five point lead, which turned out to be the final margin . There was some consolation for Rupo in the reserves, however, as they scored a 65 point win over Swinburne . GRAND FINAL PREVIEW Well, this is the essence of which, let's say, nine months of hard work on and off the track by the players, coaching staff, committees and volunteers, boils down to . The best two teams have fought their way through the home and away season and lead up finals, clinching promotion on the way, to play off for the ultimate prize for any team, and indeed, any player . Neither side has yet to savour premiership success at senior level, but have experienced the bitter taste of defeat in the big one, with Swinburne losing to Syndal Tally Ho in the D4 title decider in 2001, while the Gryphs'only previous Grand Final saw them go down to Hawthorn Amateurs in the

1998 F Grade playoff. Therefore, there is the chance to make some history . There would be nothing more special than playing in a club's first ever senior premiership, and I'm sure that both coaches would be stressing this point as inspiration . Each team has their share of big names, and although the Razorbacks have comfortably beaten the Gryphons in each of their three games this season, they would not be resting on their laurels come the biggest game of the year. There was quite a Swinburne presence at the Preliminary Final, both to lend support to their reserves side, as well as finding out who their opponents in the Grand Final would be . They seemed pretty confident, watching the game, having a bit of a kick, although I was surprised that glamour full forward Jason Murchie wasn't in cotton wool, wearing a t-shirt saying "Don't Touch The Murch" to minimize a Bob Pratt circa 1934 final series scenario. Look out for Holland to line up on Murchie, if available, as The Dutchman had the better of the Swinburne full-forward last time out . Other dangermen for the Razorbacks up forward include Higgins and Milano, and it is these multiple options which would cause Gryphons coach Jack McDonald the most concern, as they are more than capable of picking up the slack if Murchie is well held . The Gryphs do have some firepower of their own, however in the shape of Malone, so it won't be a holiday for the Swinburne defence by any means, either.
Both sides also have influential playmaking halfbacks in Wells (Monash) and Fragiacomo (Swinny), who for mine has probably been the most outstanding players I've seen this season . They could well be the barometer of their team's performance, such is their importance . Watch out also for the captain's clash between Albert (Swinburne) and Bourbon (Gryphons) in the middle, as well as other on-ballers such as Fidler and Whiting (Swinburne) and Flowerday an d

Gilchrist (Monash) . What could really decide the outcome, however, is the ruck contest between Rowan Coxhead (Gryphs) and Chris Farrington (Razorbacks), two of the better ruckmen in the competition this season . OK, time for me to pick a winner, and I think given current form and past results, it's hard to overlook Swinburne, despite the record of Monash over the last three or so months, which certainly airi t shabby. So Swinburne it is, by 21 points . In the reserves, I'll take Werribee to win . TEAM OF THE YEAR

~~ V ~~ '~ _ _ :~Zonash Gryphons - Well, unfortunately, Paul "Dutchy" Holland wasn't able to take the field for what would have been his 100th game last week (as featured in last week's Amateur Footballer), but hopefully, for his sake and that of his team, he will be available to play, and would love to make it a double celebration by claiming a premiership medallion . Good luck Dutch, from everyone at the Gryphs!

After 21 weeks of gruelling, intriguing and entertaining D4 action, the cream has risen to th e top, and the best teams of the season have made it t o the Grand Final and subsequent D3 promotion . What this has meant though . is that it has delivered D4 one of the most even games in some years in the battle for premiership glory. Review It was a tight and tense opening to the Senior Preliminary final, however, it was Albert Park who started the better of the two teams . Unfortunately, the Falcons could not put this dominance onto the scoreboard and after hitting the post twiee . Mt .Lilydale hit back with a goal of their own to take the lead . With Julian Storey strong in the ruck and Andy Fleming strong in the packs, the Falcons did manage to get a couple of their own back and subsequently went into the first quarter break with their noses in front . The second quarter was all the Dales, and with Rhodes"gaining the upper hand in the rucking duels, they managed to kick the next three majors for the game . In the back line . Mount's Carstens and Flanagan were miserly as they restricted the normally potent Falcon forward line to one goal for the quarter . In the meantime, the Dales kicked another three to go into half time with a handy 5-goal lead . With star forward Sean Allen on the bench injured for Albert Park after half time, the situation was grim for the Falcons, however, some good play from Jason Simcocks, Jodie Taylor and Brad Tuite allowed Shaun Venables and Julian Storey to kick the next two and the lead was reduced to three goals . This was as close as the Falcons got though, as Roberts and Hayes regained the ascendancy for Mount in the final quarter as they went on a goalkicking spree to run out comfortable 59-point winners . In the Reserves Preliminary final, North Brunswick was able to break away to an early lead . With the efforts of Boudoloh and Duson providing plenty of opportunities to Sorleto in the forward line, North went into the first break three goals in front .

The second quarter saw a more even contest with Steve Garci a
stron g Nick Pastras getting plenty of the ball up front for Albert Park, however, the Falcons were unable . It was the same story tmakednihNorla in the third quarter as the strong North Brunswick defence of Mountney and Salloum restricted the Falcon's scoring chances . The final quarter sau North outscore a gallant Falcon team to go into the grand final with a 32-point win . Preview Seniors - IJHS-VU versus Mt . Lilydale As I mentioned earlier, the two most deserving teame have made it to the Grand Final, and now that th earth, isgontbeamonu tlbae c decide who will go home with D4 premiership glory . Mt.Lilvdale have re-found their lost form last weel+ against Albert Park, however, they will need to take another step up if they are to reverse the floggin€ they got two weeks ago at the hands of the students This time around, it will be UHS who have had < week's rest, and given their rampant form in tha match two week's ago, Mount will need to produ . csomethingpalfyrothen UHS's goal kicking prodigy, Tate is on the verge of hi : 100th goal for the season, and this could provid

additional motivation for the straight shooting forward, not that he should need it . However, there was a marked improvement in the Dales back line last week and they will be hell bent on restricting his shots on goal . Ultimately, this is where I believe the match will be won or lost and should Mount continue this form into today's match, it could be the difference . Tipping a winner is an extremely difficult task, and it's a decision that I have lamented on for a couple of days. Both teams are in good form, have quality lists and would both be deserving winners . However, there can only be one, and today I think Uni High School's fresh legs should see them home to win by 8 points . RESERVES - UHS-VU versus No rt h Brunswic k As was the case in the seniors, the two best Reserves teams for the year have made the Grand Final . Today's game is North's third grand final appearance in four years, and given that the club has not succeeded in any of these, there will be plenty of motivation for them to break the drought . On the other hand, the students have proven to all and sundry they are a class outfit, and will be hoping to set the tone for the day for what could be a magical day for the "Green and Tan" . The likes of Boudoloh, Burrows and Cutler could be playing their final match for North, today and this will give the rest of their team mates extra desire to succeed, however, this can only take you so far . In their Semi Final two weeks ago, North's forward line was the key and if the ball can get down to them quickly from players like Russo, Duson and Lattouf then the game could be beyond Uni High . Once again picking a winner is difficult and I think the result will be a real nail biter . At the end of the day though, it will come down to sheer desire as to who will take out the game and in this regard, I believe it will be North who will want it more . Therefore I am tipping them to win by the narrowest of margins, 1 point. Team of the Yea r Thank you to everyone who sent in nominations and after much thought, I have penned who I believe to be the D4 team of the year . While you may not al l

Benefiting from an extra week on the track and the luxury of a near-full list to choose from, Old Melburnians will go into this weekend's game confident they can knock off the minor premiers once more, having beaten Werribee both early in the home-andaway season, and in the second semi-fmal two weeks . Lacking match-practice towards the tail-end of the ago season, Werribee undoubtedly benefited from last weekend's preliminary final, the game not only acting as a morale-booster but also giving the side a chance to prove their fitness over four quarters of football . Collegians at Preston City Oval . In a game Old Carey virtually dominated from the start, the pre-match favourites amassed thirty-six scoring shots to just five, holding Collegians scoreless in both the second and fourth quarters . Old Carey coach Craig Williams admits "it probably was nearly out best four quarter performance for the year, there were no passengers, all twenty-two of our boys put their hands up and had a real go . Our backline was solid all day, we had good run throughout the midfield, which gave our forwards every opportunity ." Angus and Howat both kicked two for the winners, while Trumbull, Bowlerv and Niven were

A highly anticipated replay of the second semi-final, in which Rupertswood were triumphant by thirteen points, Old Carey enter the game off the back of a comprehensive preliminary final victory, the side looking to knock off Rupertswood for the first time this year and in doing so claim the section three premiership . Both sides have been near faultless this season ; Rupertswood remain undefeated despite coming within several points of a loss on a number of occasions, while Old Carey have systematically thrashed every team they've played, with the exception of Rupertswood . Old Carey coach Craig Williams admits the game will be won in the midfield, however it is more likely Carey will be most reliant on their forwards to reverse an inaccurate trend . Kicking 5 .15 and 5 .17 in losses to Rupertswood, Old Carey have struggled to put the ball between the two big sticks, having matched the top side in every department bar goal kicking on their previous three meetings . Williams concedes "Rupertswood are a good side, a very even side with strong on-ballers that team well, but they have a lot of expectation on their shoulders . We'll enter the game with a relaxed frame of mind, and just try to get back to playing the kind of footy that made us successful this year. If we get our match ups right, I'm expecting us to put up a really good fight, and if we can play as well as we did last Sunday . I reckon we can give it a really good crack ." Preview BANYULE-VIEWBANK vs UNI BLACKS Grand Final U/ 19 Re d The undefeated Banyule-Viewbank meet University Blacks this Saturday afternoon, as the section's top two sides battle it out for premiership glory . Relieved after an extremely close fixture last weekend, the Blacks ability to finish their game was most impressive, as was their solid backline who limited La Trobe to just nine scoring opportunities . "We showed a lot of grit on the weekend," explains coach Lachlan Beaton "and we'll again have to play to our optimal level to come close to Banyule .
