This weekend sees the curtain cm~_, da : :n on another successful season of Amateur football . ilst it has been a

successful one, i n many ways it has also been a sad one, as a number of people who were with us at the commencement of the year are not with us today . Our highly respected treasurer Noel R undle recently passed away, there have been numerous club identities pass on and we all mourned the tragic passing of De La Salle's Anthony Molan . A highlight for me this weekend will be assisting Noel Rundle's much loved partner Judy Watts with the presentation of the A section reserves cup named after the great Noel Rundle . During these difficult times a salient feature of our Association has stood out . That is, apart from the playing of football matches, this Association is about its clubs and their people . It is about people drawing from each other support, comfort, and solace . It is about encouraging each other to carry on, and as I said only a short while ago, it is about putting the past behind us and looking to the future . The manner in which you have all supported the various families throughout the year has made me very proud both of yourselves and our Association . 2 G--.nd Finals are the finale The A and r se our finals s( 5 . They are the culmination of a year's planning and hard work by the four respective clubs and I congratulate St B ernards, Old Xaverians , uitefs-iars an d De La S alle on earning the righ t

to play off for the A and B section premierships . I wish all clubs the very best of luck . May you all play well and represent your club and our Association in the very best traditions of Amateur football .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2003

In acknowledging successes of the year, I would o co: all the winners of ie i ; :ided so far, rne suc4,ss of our Association should not be centred entirelv on the successful.

We are made up of seventy-three clubs, all of who display the same passion, the same desire to succeed and the same love for the game . Not everyone can win premierships but by playing our great game and by being a part of our great Association you are I. winners . I thank you all for you marvellous contribution and to the opportunities you provide to so many people . I announced at our recent Vote Count and Presentation Evening that this was my third and last year as your President. As this is the final "Amateur Footballer" publication for this year I want to say to all of you what a very great honour it has been for me to have been President of our Association and I want to sincerely thank everyone for their support and encouragement throughout my term . What ever little I have done, could not have been done without the great support and hard work of my E xecutive Committee so capably led by our Chairman Bruce Mc'f:aggâ‚Źart, and also of course by our marvellous staff led by Phil Stevens supported by Brett Connell, Sue Anderson, Peter Harris, Cliff Bastow and Kate Balme . I thank each and everyone of you . I invite you all to enjoy this weekend's games and I look forward to welcoming you all back in 2004 . Richard L . Evans President Victorian Amateur Football Association .

Another season draws to a close today, and as Richard Evans remarked in hi s colunul today it certainly has been a "bitter sweet" year, with plenty of fantastic football played, many memorable achievements attained all tinged with a few sad moments . The sad loss of De La Salle's Anthony Molan and the loss of Noel Rundle have been well documented, but one sad story which inspired a triumph has been without doubt the Beaumaris Football Club's remarkable C section premiership win . Squeezing into the four by 0 .63% the Sharks then defeated Caulfield Grammarians, St Leos Emmaus Wattle Park and flag favourites Collegians to

secure the flag. The club had dedicated the season to young Damien Guidolin, the club's 2000 Under 19 captain and an emerging talent who was tragically killed before the start of the season . It was fitting that Damien 's best mate Brayden Haynes won the medal for the player judged best on the ground in the C section grand final. What a wonderful example of turning adversity into a powerful motivating force . When an AFL club experiences success you hear the president thanking everyone from the boot-studder up . Although not everyone to the club's best player . And so it is with the VAFA's Executive and Administration can find the time to put in the vast number of hours, that for example a Richard Evans has for years, every person who serves on the Executive, works full-time or part-time for the Administration or serves on a voluntary basis on a sub-committee or who just plain "helps out" in their small way is thanked for their contribution to the success of season 2003 .

The wonderful thing about the paid and unpaid servants of the VAFA is that they contribute as a part of a team and act on behalf of the team and not as an individual seeking the limelight for him or herself . As it is Richard Evans' final "hurrah" today as our president, I thank and congratulate him on his wonderful contribution during his term as president and before that his magnificent seven years as chairman of the permit and reinstatement committee . Bruce McTaggart's contribution as chairman has been wonderful in terms of support and guidance, and his legal background and ability to think clearly and fairly has been of immeasurable value to myself, and also to Sue Anderson in the operation of the tribunal and the investigations . To our General Manager of Football Operations Brett Conne ll and Administration Officer Sue Anderson, I thank them both sincerely for "hanging in there" during what has been a year burdened by extra duties and many draining emotional situations . Hey guys, we've made it !! ! Mick Hall Also to Peter Harris, Tony O'Ca ll aghan, Cliff and Mavis Bastow, Nancy McTaggart, "Mighty" thank you for all your efforts and support . Kate Balme our groundsman, and in recent times our "new kid" after Easter or the Saturday There are two possible sta rting dates for the 2004 season - the Saturday before Easter . Easter next year falls April 9 - 12 so round one would be either Saturday April 17 or Saturday April 3. To allow the VAFA to finish as usual the weekend before the AFL Grand Final we could, in all sections 2004, commence after Easter and play a three week finals series with all first and second semi finals to be played on the first weekend of the finals or play a four week finals series meaning we would have to play one round before Easter. As this affects clubs, the thoughts of the clubs will influence the Executive's decision which will be made in October . Whatever decision is made the finals for all sections will be consistent - either a 3 or 4 week series . IT WAS about five minutes into the third quarter when Quinny did his block . "Bloody hell," he said . "I've hardly seen any of it because I'm running after my girls, but every time I have a look Old Scotch seems to kick a goal. " At that stage, the Cardinals had a foot in the Grand Final .

They had extended a half-time lead to three goals and Quinny and the Old Xavs brigade were dropping their heads . Then, with that, Old Xavs turned on the taps and drenched the ground in champagne football .

Ruckman Carey, a regular battler in the twos, baffled the rain-soaked crowd at Sportscover Arena by leaving league best and fairest Andrew Crowe in the shade, Andrew Biddlecombe kept the dangerous Luke Hawkins in leg shackles and Sam Johnson ran around with the confidence of a man prepared to fight the front bar . Up forward, the leads from Scotty Mollard and James Drake became livelier . Biddlecombe even had the audacity to run off Hawkins to lay a hand on it in the midfield . Mollard, a mad-eyed, wild-haired type, dashed out from the square on daring sprints and the ball stuck to his hands . He kicked three goals after parading an elegant kick .

Drake, the other spearhead, also finished wit h three but he could have had more for he was a tad wasteful . Both will be pivotal today . It is not known what words Michael Sholly served up his men at the adjournment, but they had the desired effect . Old Xavs poured in seven goals to two in the third quarter to put the game under lock and key, then dished out three goals to none as a parting insult .

Quinny and the faithful in red and black nodded approvingly , knowing they'd be back for another Grand Final . CAI2E?INAI. SIN ?

Old Scotch will be able to find a few crumbs of consolation from the wreckage given the time for a cool assessment. Lachie Thompson, the son of Brownlow medallist Len, capped a top year with another fine game and showed all the signs of a player in the making . Broad-backed and with the presence of few boys his age, the under-19 best and fairest also has a wonderful kick, not dissimilar to the great Plugger in technique .

Andrew Crow was dominant for the first half, offering both presents to his small men and a target across the ground . Old Scotch was the form side that fell over, but it will come back a sturdier side next year .

THE BIG CAHUNA

Old Xaverians and St Bernards both carried a cloud of uncertainty with them on the eve of the finals, having gathered losing streaks . But both have shown passages of dynamite when it matters - at Elsternwick Park in September . Watch out for Danny Jordan : boy, the man can play . After impressing the powers at Geelong early in the season, he was snapped up by the VFL side and finished his season with a bang . What's next for Jordan is anyone's guess, but he's passionate about St Bernards and was still talking up a premiership defence with the Dogs while everything was happening with the Cats .

Jordan might be stood by Andrew Biddlecombe, who was sent out for a free feed by the boys from 96 .5 Inner FM for his efforts against Old Scotch . The were unanimous in giving him the gong for man of the match . M IDFIELD WAR The men around the ruckmen will decide whether Jordan or Mad Mollard gets the most opportunities and the protagonists in the middle will make for riveting viewing . St Bernards will rely on Danny Byrne and Ben Jordan while the Xavs will lean on Tim Ockleshaw, the exciting Adam Chatfield and former Saint Caydn Beetham .

Beetham had a quiet day against Old Scotch, but when he's been good this year he has been irresistible . He is one of several VAFA players talked up for this year's national AFL draft, along with Old Haileybury's Mark Corrigan . ONE'S NOT ENOUGH? Mick Hooper collected two goals and a flag with St Bernards' under-19s last Saturday and will have another crack at one today .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2003

And so we are down to this the Grand Final . Congratulations to Pat McConville, Col Glover, Tony Miller, Rob Bonnici all the players and all n win n D a to Salle o associated n A1 G adeo Dow and Saturday an d with retur back in 12 months in this day and age is a pretty ood effort. After a stellar season the past

fortnight has proved to be a nightmare for Old

. But they are resilient would have Essendon learnt a lot from their experiences and will bounce back in 2004 . REVIEW Little Rob Bonnici thought all his Christmases had come at once when Sam Fleming won the toss and amazingly kicked into the swirling, Grammar Boy s howling breeze . Was this the

mindset for the day coming out in a negative mode . Well for the first 20 minutes you would not have thought so as they matched it with De La and even kicked a couple into it to make it look as the bold move had worked. But then for some reason they relaxed and took the foot off the pedal an d De la rallied with Ben Mannix each and a by the first break DMaloney a had opedned u p a handy 34 point lead . Old Essendon had a pretty good second quarter with Podger particularly dominant up forward s into and started The Harrison Boy were providing the De La forwards with plenty of opportunities as David Dugan and Jaye Foon missed relatively easy s ots . The Grammar Boys took the ball into the forward half 15 times in the second quarter for only 4 major converts, but by the long break had narrowed the gap to 8 points . So the game was up for grabs as the ball was bounced to begin the championship quarter . The wind had certainly not abated to any degree at all so the Bombers task to contain the ~ast running De La Salle players was not going to be easy . ith the veteran Pat O'Callaghan now totally on top in the ruck and getting the ball to ground where that little terrier Bonnici was sett in a fine example and was in and under everyt~ing, feeding the ball forward where the Ben Mannix show continued to prevail . Even eseasoned veteran Andrew . th grandstand wing to put4through a long ~oa1 Old~ssendon defended stoutly but a couple of

haphazard passes made it easier for De La and at the final chanise th e Grammar Boys wer e 48 points in arrears and their season and A Grade dream was all but over . The Bombers tried to make a surge and goaled after 90 seconds of play, but DLS steadied and took total control of the many stoppages, with the continued good form of Big POC and little Robby totally influential . The e La defensive unit was superb in containing the talented OEG side who had trouble with the conditions missed the influence of Jordan Leask and mentally appeared to be still suffering from last week . Well done to De La Salle who advanced to the Grand Final promoton to A Grade to celebrat l e te it's50 h year in the VAFA.

In the Reserves it was Old Brigton's ferocious r ball thwhil attack on th e at shut the int o Old Parad as e the first quarte totally out of the game . OPS inaccuracy certainly did not help their cause 16 points before they scored their first major, but this is to take nothing away from the Tonners who were terrific all day, especially Brook Logan who controlled the ruck, Liam O'Neill and- Andrew Walsh showed plenty of skill and courage, and Andrew Edge made a tremendous return after coming back from another injury .

PREVIEW And so to the final game of the 2003 season the Big One, the Gr and Final. Something that every aspirin club member dreams of being in when all the ~ard yakka starts in January/ ebruary. An all Catholic affair today promises to be a great game . Both sides are at full strength and so will be offering no excuses . Let's hope the weather is One an we get conditions favourable to both sides . There is certainly some good natured rival ry between the two club's with both Greg Feutrill and Tony Miller up to a few par ty tricks in the past fortnight, but this wi ll be put in the background today as seriousness sets in . The stakes are high . Friars would have enjoyed the week's break last week while De La battled it out in the tough conditions at S an dy . Pat O'Callagh an earnt his recall last week and if he continues that form he will make it hard for Wood, an d Pasqualotto to set it up for their talented mid fielders . But Leigh and Peter Harrison an d Rob Bonnici give away nothing in comparison in that area . Up forward Carrigg, Cunningham and Richard Pawlik give the Friars plenty of marking options and of course Anderson always has to be watched, while Ben Mannix was in superb touch last week, while Maloney, Foon and Duggan are always d an gerous . Friars will welcome back Kennedy and Campbell while DLS will re gain Laragy, Kosch and possibly young SpithilI so there will be some disappointed players . All in it promises to be a ripper game the fast flowing free moving Whitefriars unit who love Sportscover Arena against the good ordinary DLS. Made the mistake of picking against the Friars last year an d copped aew reminder phone calls on the Sunday, and as DLS do not wan t the Brain's Kiss of Death I will go with the boys from Park Orchards to adv an ce to A Section with the flag . RESERVES With a full list to choose from DLS wi ll be at full strength in the Ressies and thus an d their terrific Second Semi Final form should be enough to get them over Old Brigton who have put in a fantastic effort to get here .

Review Beaumaris capped off a fairytale month of football by taking out their first C Grade flag over Colle gian s by 53 points . The Sharks were lucky to even be in the last four after sneaking into the finals by 0 .63% from the Mentone Vultures . The story becomes even more amazing after it was Collegians who defeated the Sharks in Rd18 by 12 points . One more goal from Lions would have ended the Sharks season and may have provided them with the 2003 flag . However, as fate would have it the Sharks knocked off an undermanned Caulfield Or in the lst semi and tore apart the Animals in the prelim to face off against the Lions . The game was played with a 5-6 goal breeze blowing towards the scoreboard end and it was the Sharks who had the first turn . The account was not opened until the 6min mark of the quarter as Mark Boon slotted one through . Beaumaris then fell into the trap when going with a strong breeze and started blazing shots from everywhere wasting several scoring opportunities . Mick Atkins was dominant up forward giving the Sharks a target to look for as Murray Pitts again started in the goal square opposed to the tight checking Holst . Atkins capped off his good work with a goal and the game threatened to blow open in the Sharks favour . The Lions persisted and started moving the ball into the breeze a lot better, leaving Shura Taft one out inside the 45m are . A strong pack mark and goal from Shadbolt pulled the margin back in

after some. good work through the middle from Shinkfield an d Harrison . Goal of the day then quickly followed from Jimmy Fry, dancing around 4 Shark hackman before throwing it on his boot to put his side within a kick at quarter time . The game was stacked heavily in Collegians favour as they took their turn with the breeze in the 2nd qtr . The Sharks coaching staff knew the only way they were to stay in this game was to stack the backline and sent the experienced Paul Sherman to do the job as loose man . Ruckman Mick Matulick stood in the Lions forward line making scoring goals very difficult for the Lions . It took them 11 mins to finally penetrate through the defence with a goal to Lang . Collegians then appeared to get on top but failed to capitalise on their domination . Luck wa s

also against them, just ask Shura Taft who would still be wondering how that ball bounced back over his head running into an open goal . The Sharks held on and restricted their opponents to the one goal, thanks to the work of Brayden Haynes and Sherman . The premiership qtr was never more evident with the Sharks coming out of the rooms on fire slamming on 2 quick goals to hit back in front . The Lions tried to slow the game down and sent regular forward Brock Mooney and Blumfield down back to try and stop the flow . The answer came in the fashion of 4 goals going over the top of the Lion defender's heads including a bomb from Atkins inside the centre square . Coach Hawkins pleaded with his charges at orange time to believe that a win was possible . However, any chance of a comeback was quickly put to rest as big man Sean Coote calmly curled one through the sticks . The Sharks ended up outscoring the Lions in the last qtr with another goal to Coote and Rawlins getting some reward for a busy day. The defensive game of Brayden Haynes earned him the Michael Ritterman medal for best on ground . Tim Collins and Sherman along with Haynes formed an integral part of their team's backline and were the main reason their side was kept in the game in the first half . The Collegians pair of Roach and Holst battled hard for the entire match . Collegians were the best team for the season, however it turned out that Beaumaris were the best side in the finals and that is when it counts .

Beaumaris would like to congratulate Justin Bryce on playing his 50th game in last weeks Grand Final . A great acquisition to the club on and off the field, Justin has fitted in well . Frustrated by injuries over the past two years he has showed tremendous grit and determination to force his way back into a premiership side . We wish him well for the rest of career at Beaumaris . v.:J THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2003

LAST DRINKS "Y feel like one Who treads alone Some banquet hall deserted. Whose lights arefled Whose garlands dead,

And all but he departedi " Thomas Moore's bittersweet words from "The Light of Other days", perfectly sum up a Section Scribe's feelings as one season fades out and another heaves into view . I write this on Monday afternoon, & the Notting Hill Hotel will be ringing with repeated renditions of the Ashers' song, and every second of last Saturday's GF will be recalled and analysed in excruciating detail . Already, what actually happened will have been improved upon, to such an extent that variances between the mental recalls and the 'video tape' replays will be put down to dodgy camera work! So, this Scribe 'treads alone' through the 'banquet hall deserted' of the 2003 Season and reflects .

life difficult thereafter, bu tfansticefortsby Ash Goldman ,

`i_

Mart Dudakov , Jake Sharp & Adam Zemski throughout the match saw the Jackas take the Flag with a big Q4 . The Ashers were disappointed overall, but not with the games played by Lachlan Reddingfield at HF, & Justin Peel OtB . Seniors The main game was equally wind affected, which was a pity, but it is Melbourne & September! The Jackas had first use of that wind and it looked as though Julian Kirzner would give Greg Chessari a harder time than in the 2nd Semi . Even so, scoring anything was never easy, with the breeze a major aid to both defences . There was little between the sides as Q2 ended, but the feeling round the ground was that the Jackas were looking the better, and the Ashers were going to hav e

What stands out is, that Monash Blues an d AJAX finished 8th & 7th respectively in 2002! That fact must encourage all of next year's D1 Clubs! The Ashers & Jackas Clubs put in a huge effort to turn their fortunes round in 2003, and they are an example to all, there to be emulated !

THE GRAND FINALS Reserves The early game saw the AJAX an d Monash Blues having to contend with a strong 6 goals northerly blowing towards the Weatherall Road end . The Jackas defence worked hard in Q1 to deflect many Ashers attacks and they even managed to score a goal against the wind . The strong Ashers defence made

to try Plan B! They did, and brother, what a turn round! Liam `Hover' Holloway made Q3 his own after switching from CHF to CHB, where his strength at the skyside contests gave his team mates a massive confidence injection, and life very difficult for the Jackas forwards . Holding the Jackas goalless and scoring 2 themselves saw the Ashers head for the post Q3 huddle in a vastly improved fame of mind . Phil De Young & John White had smiles on their faces, and even perennial worrier, Andrew Headberry, wore a cautious half grin! Monash turned Q4 into their own, again holding the AJAX forwards to zip goals whilst powering ahead themselves . Once again the strength and flexibility of the Ashers set up and the adroit management of it by Tim Powell had come up trumps when it really counted . Liam Holloway was a most worthy winner of the John Manton Medal, his presence at contests dominating. Ryan Turton had a point to make about being a too frequent bench warmer, and his performance OtB was exemplary, as also was Aaron Williams's in the Ruck . For the Jackas, Gab Dukes, Elliot & Aldan Wollner, Jason Ritterman, & Nick Gold were all sensational, but Destiny wore different colours this day ! "Who turned the lights out in this bloody hall! , :ow do I get out of here? Help! "

by Ed Sill Andrew W u

What Ed Says :

We are the boys from old Fitzroy rang out loud and clear as the Reds held on over a fast finishing Peninsula in a great game of amateur football! Big crowd, spirited but fair game, great stuff! The Reds kicked with the aid of a strong breeze in the first stanza . The wind coupled with Grand Final pressure caused the game to be fairly scrappy . A great goal from Vinnie Cahill put the Reds three goals up at the first break . The emergence of Bowen of the bench in the last few minutes seemed to give Peninsula a bit of a sniff and both coaches would have been satisfied at the break . Fitzroy threatened to blow the game open in the first ten minutes on the second quarter . Dawson was playing a fine opportunist role for the Reds, scoring a goal and having a hand in a number of others . They had stretched the lead to more than five goals and a rout seemed possible . The Pirates weren't keen on this idea and were ably led by Sam Murray who had in the same half of the ground after the break, a clear indicator that Coach Sill wanted him to be where the ball was . Murray didn't let his coach down, goaling three times in less than 10 minutes . Centre half forward Payze was also starting to get a bit of the footy although the human blanket, Todd Clarke wasn't allowing too much latitude . A late goal to the Reds saw the margin remain at three goals at the major break .

The Pirates started the third quarter well but the Reds suddenly got the machine rolling! An inspirational goal from full back Cairns was a team lifter . Ronchi was now dominating in the ruck, giving the likes of Cahill, Diacogiorgis and Addicott first use of the ball out of the centre . The lead had stretched to over 6 goals when Glen Archer look-alike, Julian Sill, imposed himself by forming a human wall in the last five

minutes if the quarter. The lead was still substantia l however it was still gettable . Reds coach Graeme Burgan stressed the need to 'push back' into defence in the last quarter whilst Pirate coach Sill implored his team to run, run and run! Fortune favours the brave, something that Burgen clearly had in mind when he put Diacogiorgis onto the dangerous Murray in the last quarter . 'Dacca', a slightly older version of Luke Hodge, responded to the challenge in keeping Murray quiet . Peninsula threatened but always felt just out of reach . Fast finishing but just short of the mark . Ronchi was named best on ground with the Cahill, 'Dacca', Dawson and Clarke also prominent . Bit harder to find for the Pirates, Murray at his end of the ground, Dentry and Teelow battled hard whilst Sill consistently put his body on the line for his club . All in all, a great game of footy, well done to both clubs and best wishes on advancing into D1 .

What Andrew Says : Grand Final Review Fitzroy are premiers again! After winning the 2001 D3 premiership, the Reds only had to wait two years before adding the 2003 D2 trophy to the mantelpiece . Peninsula's inability to cope with the Reds' manic intensity at the ball left it floundering during the finals . According to Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen, Peninsula tried unsuccessfully to physically attack his side last week . "They went after our blokes in the second quarter," Burgen said . "They tried to intimidate us with our young side but our blokes are smart so it didn't work . " If a moment can define a football match, then Reds "balding father figure" Steve Addicott's attack at the ball on the halfforward flank deep in the second quarter was it . In years to come at Fitzroy's 2003 premiership reunions, this moment will be constantly mentioned, reflected upon and exaggerated . Certainly nobody's idea of Mr Universe, Addicott's courageous and inspirational effort to not only win the ball from a contest he had little hope of getting to, but to also leave his opponent writhing in agony resulted in his team scoring an important goal into the wind . While Peninsula were only four goals behind at this stage, it was hard to see Fitzroy losing from that point on . Fitzroy coach Graham Burgen agreed . At Fitzroy's celebrations last Sunday, this moment was replayed over and over again and greeted with cheers every time . "Everyone lifted around that," Burgen said of Addicott's act .

SECTION D2 GRAND FINA L 3.3 8 .6 12 .9 12 .9 (81) FITZROY REDS 5 .5 6 .7 9 .12 (66) PENINSULA 0 B 0 .3 Fitzroy Reds: Dawson 3 V Cahill 2 Addicott 2 R Holderhead 2 Rawlins Pollard Cairns . While Peninsula were undefeated for the home and away season, Fitzroy's effort to defeat the Pirates twice in a fortnight showed that they were certainly the best side during the finals and worthy premiers . Although this will be cold comfort to the Pirates, they should be applauded for going through the home and away season undefeated . This is a rare feat and certainly an achievement not to be sneezed at . While promotion to D1 will only make it tougher for them to win a premiership, any team that can win 19 games in a season in D2 should be at least a finals threat in Dl the following year . But the sad reality facing Peninsula now is that a golden opportunity to win a flag has come and gone . Unfortunately for them, they saved their worst football for the most important month of the year and now must endure an endless summer of soul-searching and a torturous preseason before they get their chance to atone for their disappointing and heartbreaking end to the season . Peninsula didn't choke as many pundits will suggest, but the tag of "runners-up" will still be very hard for them to swallow . Not e Thank you to all the coaches and press correspondents who contributed this season . Without your assistance, this scribe would have very little to write about . Your contributions have been greatly appreciated .

appearance in an A Section Grand Final was in 1964 when it was beaten by Old Paradians. St . Bernards would bow out in straight sets after Old Scotch jumped them in the prelim final. Heath (4gls) was a key up forward for the Scotchies while Tim Holt and Rohan Price shone . So to the OF and Old Xaverians were unbackable - (all Executive and Administration thought so anyway) only Phil Stevens and Angela Giles chose Old Scotch .

In the end after a terrific first half the Xavs pulled away to win well . Simon Wood and Michael Blood wonderful all day for the Xavs, with Tom Wilson Scotch's best . Old Ivanhoe would take their place in A in '99 after a tough win over Old Trinity in the B prelim . A surging last quarter saw Stuart Glascott's boys with some great work from Jarred Weddle, Brad Shadbolt (5gis) and Paul Donaldson run over OT - best served by courageous skipper Rohan Phillips . The OF would be a thriller with Old Ivanhoe having 4 more scoring shots but failing by the barest of margins . Fullback Gus Seabury and Glenn Cox were the Eagles best in what only can be described as a thrilling win . The shortest priced C Section favourite for a long time went down in a shock when Beaumaris, who had only lost two games all year, went down by five points to Hampton Rovers who were really on a roll . The Rovers would win all three finals including the GF with Hobson, Browne and Power their best . For the Sharks Sherman and Andrew Quin battled hard. Whitefriars took control of their game against Southbank in D after half-time . Power, Pawlik and Jongebloed great Friars (the first two still going strong in 2003) . Morgan and McNamara good triers for the vanquished Bankers . U19 Premiers : Section 1 Old Xaverians over Be La Salle, Section 2 Old Scotch over Whitefriars, MHSOB over Hampton Rovers & Yarra Valley over Old Ivanhoe .

The umpires farewelled Mark Bushy" Bushfield who retired after umpiring his 15 OF. Bushy was moving to Jan Juc with his wife and would be remembered for being well liked by most . A & B Section Grand Final umpires were to be from James Van Beek, Steve McCarthy (A), Mark Gibson & Anthony Damen (B). B&F Results were as follows : Luke Gollant St . Bernards (A). Bernard Dinneen Marcellin (B), Murray Pitts Beaumaris (C), Cameron Houston Whitefriars (D), Leigh Murphy Elsternwick (E Blue), Stephen Shannon Richmond Central (E While), Phil Avery Hawthorn (F), Nick Vogels Uni Blues & Simon Hart Be La Salle (U19 1), Chatura Jayasekera (U19 2), Simon Widjaja (U19 Blue), Bryce Willis (U19 Red), David Moreton Old Brighton (Club XVIII 1), Tony Jackson Parkside (Civh WAI 2) . ! In an unequalled form reversal, Oki Xaverians avenged their second semi 96 point defeat by North Old Boys when they controlled the A Section grand Final throughout to win by 18 points, 15 .21 to 13.15 . Nick Burne continued his great form at full forward with 5 goals while Stephen Curtain also contributed 3 and was a great performer around the ground . The best player on the ground was Old Xaverians captain John Noonan, who rucked strongly all day. A tightknit Old Xaverians defence shut out North's semi final star, Shane Maguire . Others to play well for Old Xaverians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody. Old Xaverians joined the select band of clubs which had won B&A section premierships in successive years . Old Xaverian's only other 34

Be La Salle OC and University Blues met in the A Section Grand Final with the Blues favourites to take out the flag . 'Twas not to be!

The Blues failed to make use of the breeze in the second term and at half time Be La had appeared to have the game in hand although leading by only 10 points . The Blues attacked in the final term by inaccuracy and the bustling Be La backs gave them no chance. Final scores were Be La Salle 11 .14 to University Blues 7.19 .

The team to represent Be la was as follows : B : G .Connelly P.McDonnell B .Hanrahan HB : R.Halassa P .Donegan B .Bourke C: D .HoIlier R.McHenry(C) J .Doolan P.Green P.Maher HF: S.Murphy R.Cawley R .Ruffolo F: M .Green B.Dunn T.Cooke R : I .Rabone I/C : A.Groves W.Peir s Coach : B .Shcehy Goalkickers were Be La: Ruffolo 4, M.Green 3, Murphy 3, Rabone 1 . ~'ifflcalth Well, we've come to the conclusion of anothe r terrific season of D3 football, and it must be said that the most deserving team got their just rewards for their efforts this year . On to the Grand Final review. . .

Favourites Swinburne got a useful break on the underdog Monash G ryphons early, establishing a quarter time lead of just over three goals, with highlights including a brilliant banana goal from the boundary by the peerless Jason Murchie . The Razorbacks increased their lead slightly in the second quarter, and indeed were more than double Monash's score, but the Grvphs must have still fancied their chances for the second half of the match .

However, those thoughts must have quickly turned to dust as the minor premiers scored six goals to none in the third quarter, despite Fidler missing most of this period due to cramp . The Gryphons defence battled manfully under this onslaught, but were not able to get the support they needed on the scoreboard . It was a similar story in the last quarter as Swinburne scored four goals nine behinds to two points in the final stanza . The Swinny defence, marshalled by the talented and controversial Simon Fragiacomo, were superb throughout the game . Adrian . Fidler, one of my favourite players in the comp this year was a deserving winner of the Vic Zanin medal for Best On Ground, while the likes of Sam Eager and Matthew Whiting continued their good form from a fortnight ago . Jason Murchie had an "average" (in the statistical sense) game, kicking six goals . Other performers of note included midfielder/forward Richard Roberts and Anthony Fricke, who started the game on the bench . For the Gryphs, perhaps not that surprisingly, their best contributors were mainly backmen, including the likes of Lee Wells, Brett Coxhead, the classy Dan Baxter and Jono Watson, with midfielders Adrian Flowerday and Tim Gilchrist also useful .

I must acknowledge both teams efforts on gaining promotion to D2 next season. Congratulations to

Swinburne coach Derek Theone and skipper Tony Albert on claiming the big prize this year, while I'm sure Monash counterparts Jack McDonald and Steve Bourbon have already started planning on how to go one better . Both sides seem to have a reasonable foundation to at least consolidate their position in the higher grade next year, but will, I imagine, strive to improve on their current stocks to make a genuine impact in 2004 . In the reserves, Werribee defeated Rupertswood by 78 points to claim the reserves' flag . Well done lads . SEASON REVIEW Obviously, Swinburne will have the most to be please about . Winning all but two games (dropped in consective weeks straight after the half way mark of the season) and then scoring a crushing victory in the Grand Final is as good a season as most teams can expect .

Monash Gryphons would have been disappointed by the conclusion of their season, but can take heart in the fact that they exceeded most people's expectations, especially after avoid relegation to D4 in the last round in 2002 .

Rupertswood's upward momentum propelled them from D4 Premiers in 2002 into the finals in D3 this season, and, if not for a heartbreaking goal conceded with 20 seconds left in the preliminary final, would have been promoted again . Watch for them in 2004 . South Melbourne Districts managed to reach the finals this season after spending the last couple of seasons having a solid first 12 or so rounds before fading away come crunchtime . They have some terrific youngsters and should be in contention next season .

Werribee Amateurs, Syndal Tally Ho an d I'owei House all ended up on eight wins, albeit their respective journeys to this result were markedly contrasted . Werribee were in the mix early, with the Synners solid while the Piranhas were struggling. Later on it was Power House's turn to shine while the Tigers and Svndal fell away as the finishing line drew closer . Hard to read based on overall form for this season, but they should do well enough to avoid relegation, and at least one of these teams should threaten for the finals . Finally, St. John's Old Co ll egians, Kew an d Elsternwick round off the review . The Jocs only managed to ensure their survival in D3 on the last day of the season, defeating Kew, and condemning the latter to D4 for next season . It is baffling that a team with a percentage of over 100, and fourth best overall, struggled in the relegation muck all year . A key factor was losing five or six games by less than a goal, and arguably perhaps their overhaul of playing personnel . A lot of these guys are young, and should be better with a year of senior footy under their belts . Kew, the vanquished team in that match, have now suffered two consecutive relegations, and are a district club battling to recruit kids in a private school heartland . There is the possibility of bouncing straight up if they can perhaps get some of these guys who aren't getting a go elsewhere . As for Elsternwick, the writing on the wall was there quite early on . Although they have a classy core, their quality of depth is lacking, and their major predicament seems to be similar to that of Kew . Therefore a solution would also be similar .

TEAM OF THE YEA R A couple of caveats before the team is read . Firstly, I have included eight on the bench to minimise the possibility of a club v . country row (albeit in a micro sense) a la Sven-Goran Erikkson v . Arsene Wenger/Sir Alex Ferguson etc . (or should that be Derek Theone, Jack McDonald, etc .?) . Also, as some correspondents were more diligent than others, those of whom I'm aware were star performers but unaware of where they played I either guessed or put on the bench, and in one or two cases, a bloke I knew could play anywhere I may have put in an unfamiliar position . Hopefully

that way, people will be more encouraged to respond next season . Anyway, here is the team : B : Tedesco (Werr) Turner (PH) J Moresi (STH ) HB : Wells (Mon Gry) Fragiacomo (Swin) M Moresi (STH )

Thanks also to the readers out there . It's always of interest to hear how people have different reactions to my "stream of consciousness" style, but fortunately most of it is positive, and it's a style natural to me that makes it a bit different (not better, or worse, or smarter, or dumber) from anyone else . Time will tell over the summer whether or not I will be continuing in any capacity in 2004 . In the meantime, any correspondence can be sent via email to theqwill@hotmail .com

The curtain falls on another action packed season of D4 football . This year, it has produced its fair share of thrills, spills and close encounters . Congratulations to Uni-High School VUT on their premiership . They have answered their critics and proven to all that they were the best all round side this season . Well done also to Mt .Lilydale who thoroughly deserved their promotion after a stellar season . Review - SENIORS - AZt .I.ily e vs tIIiS-W It was a tight, tense opening to the Grand Final as Mt Lilydale kicked with the aid of the strong breeze in the first quarter . The Dales managed to kick their first major after a few minutes, however. Uni High was able to answer this quickly. The match rapidly fell into a battle of defences with both teams trading another couple of goals for the quarter to see the scores at 2 .1 a piece going into the first break . The second term saw the Vultures use the breeze a lot better than their counterparts, and managed to kick three unanswered majors before the Dales got one back . Mount started to increase their work rate as the quarter progressed and frustrated continued Uni attacks before the Vultures put another major through . Late in the term, the Dales scrambled another ball forward before goaling to go in at half time 13 points down but still clearly in touch . In the third term, the Dales scored an early goal with the breeze and looked well in the match, however, wasted opportunities in front of goal ensued . In an effort to give themselves a chance, the Dales threw everything at the Vultures who continued to repel numerous Lilydale attacks . Mount managed to score a couple of quick goals and took the lead, however, against the run of play, the student's Gerolemou kicked a crucial goal into the wind to end the Lilydale run of goals . Answering back quickly Mount goaled to close the quarter 11 points up but questioning whether it

After the first 15 minutes they had opened a four goal lead before the students were able to get the ball forward and scramble their first points of the game . With the wind strength dying down slightly the students then held North out for the next ten minutes despite repeated attacks, before a goal with 20 seconds to go saw them head into the first break six goals in front . The Vultures had the opportunity to use the wind in the second term and opened brightly kicking 2 early majors . However, with North flooding their back line with 3 loose players, the students found it difficult to get a clear path to goal and struggled to kick crucial majors to reduce the deficit . North had the use of the wind again in the third term and were looking to put the game beyond doubt . However, the students played smart, desperate football to frustrate North's attacks and used up the clock well . They also managed to ge t the ball forward and score a major before North got the only other goal for the quarter to remain in front at the last change . The final term was a desperate arm wrestle with North playing almost all 18 players in the back half in a bid to clog up the Vultures avenues to goal and hold their lead against the wind . Goals to the students saw them close the gap to six points and in the last desperate minutes North repelled repeated attacks to hang on to a memorable six point win for the club .

In an effort to give themselves a chance, the Dales threw everything at the Vultures who continued to repel numerous Lilydale attacks . Mount managed to score a couple of quick goals and took the lead, however, against the run of play, the student's Gerolemou kicked a crucial goal into the wind to end the Lilydale run of goals . at Preston and used it to effect constantly bombarding their forward line . North had the use of the wind again in the third term and were looking to put the game beyond doubt. However, the students played smart, desperate football to frustrate North's attacks and used up the clock well . They also managed to get the ball forward and score a major before North got the only other goal for the quarter to remain in front at the last change .

Competition is still keen in the popular club competition where if one of a club's two entries correctly forecast the winners of all seven senior section premierships, that club (if it was the only club to do so) would win $ 10,000 in the Sportscover sponsored Pick the Premiers competition . No entry did this but the $1,0 0 0 consolation prize is still open to a number of entries, with two(2) results still to be determined (A and B section) . Ormond an d Bentleigh are the favourites on three (3) with each selecting St Bernards and Whitefriars as their two nominations going into the weekend . Kew, Collegians, Old Mentonians an d Beaumaris both on 3, have all selected St . Bernards as their chance for a winning selection number 4; Bentieigh. (their second entry) is on 2 and has nominated St . Bernards and Whitefriars this weekend. In case of more than one club ending up with the same number of selections the teams nominated as the GF runner-up in each of their correct selections will be used to determine the winner on countback. If no decision still then . . . . the editor of this column spends the grand on the Sunshine Coast next week !!!! ! Visit the VAFA web-site (www .vafa .asn .au) on Monday for the winning club .

速 0 0 It seems that there are quite a few sets of brothers who exceeded the 685 games played as suggested by Old Carey's "Howard" in last week's FTLOTG . Howard had nominated the Elliott brothers, Richard (275), John (250) and Ross (160) . Jack White had 5 sons who played for St Kilda CBOC in the period 1961 to 1985 - Kevin (Ox) played 326, John 301, Ian 157, Terry 88 and Bruce 72 for a magnificent total of 944 . "Alf' from Alphington informs us that the Harris brothers totalled 1,004 VAFA matches - Keith 274, Peter 416, Bruce 53 and Ian 261 . 0 0 0

A big "thank you" to the makers of the world' : best football Spalding who make the Sherrir balls "The Ball All Amateur Players Fl y For' for sponsoring the "Ben Hogan Sportinj Trivia iz" each weekend . The answe required that stumped everyone except Jud (and Max?) was that the last three senior VAF, representative team captains were Andrei Ramsden, Simon Lethlean and Gil MeLachlar 0 0 0 Every correct entry for this competition for tl : whole season was placed in a draw for tY major prize, although only one weekly winn( was announced and given a dozen Ben Hoge golf balls . No club in attendance expressed any huge concerns with the proposed merger and the committee representing the prospective new club will put its proposal to the Executive Committee of the VAFA for it to consider at its seminar in October . Section 1 S Review St . BERIdARD'S v UNIVERSITY BLUE Grand Final Ul19 S 1

Trailing by 12 points at the final chang he Bernie's again proved what a wonderful side they are, finding that little bit extra to stave off Uni's quest for glory . In difficult blustry conditions, the Blues best chance for victory was to put the minor premiers under pressure from the start . Having first usage of the stiff breeze it was critical University's forwards capitalized on early opportunities . Despite the wind at the Uni players backs, scoring goals would be difficult and whilst they managed to land four majors, their dominant 13 scoring shots to four would leave many of their players and supporters lamenting what may have been . A quarter time deficit of 19 points was enough ammunition to fuel St . Bernard's focus and with Hooper and Keunen busy, they were able to move to the half time break nine points clear . Entering the premiership stanza, both coaches asked for maximum effort from their charges and the Blues responded with Clark and Bradley leading from the front . A combination of missed chances and dour Bernie defence saw Uni conjure three goals eight, but they did hold SB goalless and all was in readiness for a thrilling final term .

semi-final h i c c u p, winning three of the fou r quarters against a gallant Old Melburnians side . Wasting chances early in the first quarte Werribee managed just three goals with the win coach Fab Gatti conceding his side failed capitalise on chances in the first term . After tl quarter-time break a rejuvenated Werribee out kicked five goals into the breeze, establishii what would eventually become a match winnii lead . Showing no signs of a side that w comprehensively run over the top of two wee ago, Werribee ran out the full four quarte, kicking the last goal of the game to secure historic 23 point win . Great teams discover a way to win when all seems lost! Kelly and Pell's never say die attitude propelled the Bernie's and after some heartstopping moments were able to hit the front and cling on to a five point, championship win .

Uni will feel disappointed about the result but they can be proud of their toils . The Bernie's stretched their unbeaten season run to twenty games and were thoroughly deserving of the 2003, J .S Me Cann Premiership Cup . Section 2

Review OAKLEIGH v TIGERS Grand Final U / In the home and away ci~ s et, 째en hese sides, the ledger was square at one game apiece . In fact, it was the Krushers only loss through 18 rounds of action. The Tigers had started the season brilliantly, but their form had dropped away towards the business end of the campaign, however stirring victories against finals' combatants, the Clayanen and the JOC's gave SBMT a quiet air of confidence . Kicking five unanswered goals in the third Banyule gathered momentum, the last quarter a scrappy low-scoring affair, with both sides placing the main emphasis on defence . Banyule's Mitropolous showed poise with only minutes remaining his goal reducing the margin to just one, before lining up from forty-five metres out only moments later, after a Blacks player was deemed to be holding the ball . Hoisting his kick into the goal square, Banyule's Wise gathered, kicking a point to tie the match with just a second on the clock . E xhilaration of Victory or the Despair of Defeat We all look towards coaching a Premiership and back in February we all think we are going to be their but out of 21 5 teams, only 22 will make it and only 11 will hold the cup aloft . As coaches we have our responsibilities to prepare players every week but on the last day of the season we have a bit more responsibility as the next 2hrs will decide who has the Exhilaration of Victory or the Despair of Defeat and none of use want to experience the later, but some of us will . We are a rare breed that allows this game to take over our lives for the exhilaration of a final siren on that last day with our team in front which lasts around 20sec and then the sharing of the moment takes over with people that will give you friendships for life that we all never forget . We do all the things prior to this game that we instruct our players not to . . .play the game in our head several times over, look at the match ups and plan the what if scenario's no matter how negative that may be, worry about how we plan our preparation on the day, analyse how the opposition could beat us, analyse what players need special attention on the day and through the week at training, make sure the process is correct on Grand Final week and all you ask of a player is to go out and play the best game of his life but

. V.A.F.A .

"Your Coaches' Association "

you know not all of them are capable of doing that at the one time, only on very special occasion s Not many coaches would have commenced any new projects or taken on too much during this week at work as footy will have consumed them, regardless how they trj to get a break from it . You will have workmates discussing it, family, brother : and mates wanting to know how you thinl it is going to go and even those who reall, do not follow footy want to know sc escaping the week is impossible . All of those scenario's come into play anc it is a tough week for coaches involved ii Grand Finals but we are a strange breei and no coach would trade that fo anything for as weird as it may seem tha 30 sec Exhilaration of Victory at th final siren is unique and some say uniqu to our game . The aftermath for the winner is week sometimes months of great moments an for the losers players recover quicker tha coaches but the knot still remains fc months and in some cases until you ge another chance, if in fact you do gf another chance . . . . . . . . .many players an coaches never get another chance !
