ontinues t o thrive, and only the most parochial of supporters of othe r petitions would not recognize t h VAFA is one of the premier; if, not premier, "junior" competitions in Austr a Over 10,000 registered players,_ over, 5C 0 0 players and umpires on the faelc ' Saturday speaks volumes for the qtrhe competition provided. One of the most pleasing aspects o f ~i.1FA is that our Under 19 competition I becoming stronger as time goes by . When started playing, there was only one Unde r 1,9 section, with 10 teams . We now have 5 sections with 50 teams, and this mean s that many more younger footballers have the opportunity to continue playing an d ultimately move on to senior football , rather than drifting away from football i n particular and sport in general . I saw on e of the Under 19 Section 2 Grand Final s last Saturday, and in atrocious conditions , each of the teams put on a great exhibitio n of football, displaying skills that spectators thought impossible in the rain and mud . The future of the VAFA is very rosy when we can produce footballers with thes e skills at Under 19 level . I would like also to take the opportunity t o thank publicly our staff and the member s he Executive . We are most fortunate t o have enthusiastic and hard working staf f

We will have to work diligently to maintain the high position o the VAFA in the football world, but I have no doubt that between the clubs and the administration, it can be done . To those clubs which have already won premierships, congratulations on a successful season . Congratulations also to our best and fairest, and our goal kicking medallists . To the 8 teams playing this weekend, good luck, give it your all, because premierships do not come easily , and may the better tea m win .

Well didn't last weekend have everything ? The deluge s made scoring a rarity and final scores close, and although the "footy wasn't pretty" the tenseness and determination of "there is no tomorrow" made for wonderful contests . We had everything from the Collingwood coack Mic k Maltlaouse delivering one of his famous fire and PHIL STEVE NS CHIEF EXECUTIVE brimstone addresses to the Hampton Rovers reserves team OFFICER before their GF at Sandringham last Saturday, right through to the dr awn game in the B section preliminary final at Sportscover Arena . This match resulted in extra time being called upon to determine the winner (Collegians) in duller than twilight conditions . Mick's address to the Rovers (his son plays for the Roves), really sent a buzz through the players and the crowd outside trying to overhear some of the words of the Top Magpie . I have b een delighted this wee k to have been able to oversee t he creation of a new full-time appointment in the VAFA, that of a Director of Umpire Operations . B rian Goodman, our current umpire advisor, has accepted this new role and will commence in the position as soon as possible . Not only will Brian carry out his current duties as adviser, he will also assume many other roles associated with the recruitment, development and retention of umpires and working with the existing group of umpires to further develop their skills and understanding of the game . Brian will commence his new role after a short break and messages can be left for him by phoning VAFA headquarters . I look forward to observing the success of this appointment as time goes by . Thanks you to all who have contributed to another successful season of Amateur football . I acknowledge the wonderful contribution of the Executive, who give up their time to ensure the continued development of the VAFA . I sincerely thank my staff of Brett, Sue, Kate, Matt, Peter, Cliff, Tony an d Nancy for their years of loyalty to myself and dedication to the VAFA . Finally, I thank my wonderful wife Robyn for her overwhelming support and ability to EX always be there over the long and Award winners - respective sectional pages For the Love of the Game . . .. . . .. . . . ... . .. .. I8-19 interesting journey . To Nick (Bourke), Bruce (McTaggart), the Executive, the new CEO and all the clubs, all the very best for the future .

The final word . Good luck to all teams today . I look forward to calling out the names of the players to receive their A and B section medallions for one last time .

44 years . 44 long years since Uni Blues last won an A Grade flag . For the Uni players running around today, it may as well be 400 years . The world was a little different then . Kennedy was in the White House an d the m an who may well be our next PM had yet to be born . In amateur football , my Year 12 economics teacher Jock Nelson was the premier player in the state while long forgotten teams such as Coburg, Commonwealth Bank and State Savings B ank were ri ght in the mix. In the subsequent years, clubs such as Uni Blacks, Old Paradians, De La Salle, Ormond an d Old Xaverian s all built mini VAFA dynasties at various stages. So what happened to the Blues in those 44 years? Well, they were certainly thereabouts. Runners up 5 times in A Grade, finalists13 times but no big Cohuna . M any theo ri es abound as to why they couldn't make it. That they were too transient a club, with nlayers shooting through as soon as they con _ J their degrees . That distractions such as s cnt exch anges an d exams took too great a toll. That they were a glorified social club that perhaps didn't take their footy as seri ously as some others . "Too m any benders, not enough defenders" was a common jibe . If all this is to change today, new coach John K anis will rightfully get the plaudits for completely altering the footballing culture up at Melbourne Uni . Amazingly, Kanis ( himself a protegee of Jock Nelson) came into the role with no coaching experience and very quickly chan ged both the game pl an and they way the students approached their football. Gun midfielders were recruited from the VFL an d the bush . No longer did star players inexplicably jet off to Belarus halfway through the season . The style of game became one of slick han dball and attack from defence . Guys who were perennial reserv es players suddenly became key A Graders. Most importan tly, he galvanised a group of young and enigmatic players and made them believe in themselves. If this is the first A Grade game you've seen this year, you may not recognise man y of these Uni guys but they're worth watching. Ross Young is 21 came from nowhere to be one of the premier players in the comp . James Scambler an d M ark

Paterson gave up VFL careers to dominate every week. Hugh Nailon, Cam Roydhouse,

Damien Guengerich went from kicking the dew off the grass in the twos to vital senior defenders . They are an eclectic mix too; from country boys such as Young, Paul Butko and captain Quinton Gleeson to ex APS players like Tom Wilcox, George De Crespigny and Ed Clark . Bu t watch out . . . . There are two things in their way . One is history. A Grade Grand Finals have a curious habit of throwing up bemusing results . By no means are a minor flag and a second semi final win a guarantee of ultimate success . In recent years, remember NOBS in 1991, Collegians in 1996, Old Melburnians in 1999 and St Bernards in 2000 & 2003? All dominated those years yet fell at the last hurdle. The other is a big, hulking presence in the St Bernards forcvard line by the name of Dan Jordan . When he's on song, no-one can stop him. In terms of amateur football, it's hard to think of anyone who hits packs as hard as him or is as proficient at one grab marks . Like any St Bernards footballer worth his salt, he has a bit of mongrel in him . He has a few Grand Final demons to exercise (knocked unconscious in 2002, pretty quiet last year) so hi s

battle with old foe James Hayter may well decide the fortunes of this game . Watch out too, for their young centreman Chris Goullet . A lot of people reckon his grandad was the best player to ever play the game . Their nuggetty taggers such as David Blunt and Mick Kavanagh will be crucial today as well . Expect them to get the big jobs on either Young, Gleeson or Scambler . Dermott Brereton once said that you can't use normal logic when it comes to assessing grand fmals . Maybe so Derm, but my heart and head still says Uni Blues . They play the most attractive brand of football, are the most shrewdly coached side going around, have the best players, play on most picturesque ground in the comp and have a solid supporter base refreshingly devoid of ratbags . I can't think of any amateur club that deserves this more . Uni by 10 points. The most striking thing about this team is the glut of gun youngsters in their teens or early twenties . The future certainly looks bright. It was picked on form, not reputation, hence the omission of highly talented players such as Paul Corrigan, Brett O'Farrell and Glenn Cox, whose seasons were derailed by injury . Others unlucky to miss out were Mark Corrigan, Jarred Frazer, lark Paterson, Dean Dobric, Brent Walsh, Charles Tallent and Andrew Lowcock . St . ernarLs Cu ----- ---- fmal against Uni Blues marks the 5C _'g ✓ __ ~_ of St.Bernard's full forward Dau Josdan. With his big frame and his big heart Dan has been one of the main reasons

for the club's consistency over the past seasons and we all wish Dan the best for today's game and offer congratulations on his past games and goalkicking performances . Also In today's grand final Lucas " Rooster" Fielding makes it a unique double by competing in his 50th game for St.Bernard's and his third successive A grade grand fmal. Since coming from Calder Cannons "Roo" has been an automatic senior selection and has won Victorian representation as a dashing half back . Congratulations Lucas and may today's game be as good as your last 49 . Go Bernard's !

Up 2 Section's in two years is an outstanding performance in anyone's language so to all at Collegians from Pat Hawkins to Wayne Dyer, Rod Nancarrow, all the Committee, Officials, Supporters and of course the players congratulations on a job well done to get the club back into A Grade where it believes it belongs . To Old Ivanhoe gallant in defeat well done on a stellar season I know it's disappointing but life goes on and there is always next year. REVIEW A Preliminary Final is always a hard game and this one was no exception in fact it was nothing short of an epic, so close that in fact it went into extra time . In an old fashioned slog the courage and commitment from both sides was worth going miles to see . Old Ivanhoe found the conditions frustrating and possibly by if -- ber of scoring shots had most of the play, b ci to grind really hard to score their goals whi . the Lions were able to score some quick ones . But one has to adapt to the prevailing conditions and perhaps the Hoers tried to play dry weather football trying to take marks where a punch might have been the more effective option . By the play off period the Hoers were spent which is to be expected after a hard campaign just to get this far, while Collegians kept their cool, with the attack on the footy and work at the numerous stoppages outstanding, this effort saw the momentum swing their way when the game was in the balance . Extra time saw a dashing point from Nick Baxter and a miraculous snap from James Fry that gave the Lions a handy break, then followed some heavy shut down footy and the game was over and the boys from Wesley celebrated their return to A Section . Brock Mooney and Ben Holst did terrific jobs on Luxon and Branigan, Andrew Shinkfield and Nic' Harrison were strong around the footy all day, Andrew Baxter and Jono Dixon were also effectiv e players as well, in a very tight knit unit who play for each other and their club with a rare intensity. Stewie Low played another blinder niiv he missed

so many early games, Rowan t>'eddle and Chanz Crowley kept their opponents in check for most of the day, Sjourke Price and Scott Curatolo strong around the packs, Michael Clarke strong across half back, and Luke Bolzon his normal self in the ruck. In the Reserves a Robert Gross inspired St Kevins reversed the results during the season to defeat the Lions and join their Senior compatriots in the one g ie in September.

Today brings to fruition what we play the game for the chance to be part of a premiership side and club . SKOBS have made a pretty good fist of B Grade this year and head straight back to the premier section in 2005, can they take some silverware with them as well as it's first ever B Section Flag, they would be hoping so . Standing in their path is a Collegians side whose efforts over the last two seasons is nothing short of sensational, there is no doubt that the Lions possess some strong talent and a never say die attitude with an incredible will to succeed . Dave Murray and Pat Hawkins have been stand outs as Coaches this year hence their naming as

Coac hes: David Murray (StK) and Pat Hawkins (Coll ) Joint Coaches in the B Section Team of the year, I just couldn't split you guys . I wish you both well and hope it is a good game . There are no secrets between these two sides they have had 3 terrific battles so far this year and so know each other's games so very very well . St Kevins would most certainly have enjoyed their break last week and must have been rubbing their hands with glee as they watched the Lions slog it out and most have become ecstatic as the game went into extra time. And this in the pressure cooker atmosphere of a Grand Final could be just the slight advantage needed to sway things SKOBS way . So in an absolute toss up I will go with the fresher legs of the lads from Righetti to greet the judge and take the Cup to the Mercat for a night of celebrations . In the Reserves GF a fine prelude to the main game should see an entertaining clash between the favourites North Old Boys and the St Nevins unit. Having taken the long road to the big dance Coach Gross has his charges fully primed and with a full list the boys are primed. In a minor upset I put my faith in the '"LEGEND" and his lads to start the day on a high for Skevvies. PRESS CORRESPONDENTS . In this my final column for the year again thanks to everyone for their support throughout i' ; season, to Don Dowell terrific input mate, Pat Hawkins excellent all year, and ion Fogarty and Nick Sweeney for some occasional flashes of brilliance well done .

In the three season clashes little had separated the teams, however in the game that mattered most, MHSOB across the paddock had all the answers . The Unicorn players were harder and stronger at the ball and even when tested, they responded magnificently to the challenge and were worthy recipients of the 2004 HJ Stewart Cup . GRAND F Heavy overnight rain on the eve of the match, marred the magnificent playing surface of th e Trevor Barker oval and the ground was considerably cut up by the Ajax and Hampton Reserves encounter. Although the weather conditions were "coolish" and may have deterred some supporters from making the trek out to Sandy, a boisterrous crowd with umbrellas at the ready, were thankful the game at least would begin without rain or a raging typhoon .

of the game, reducing the deficit to four points . Big games are when the good players stand up and the Caulfield surge proved the catalyst for The Highs' Jason Barnett to come to the fore . In an inspired eight minute patch, he was unluckily denied a low chest mark, took another, touched the heavens when pulling down a mighty grab and booted two goals including a terrific snap and had a hand in another goal which seemed to deflate the Fielders players and supporters . MHSOB by 18 at the main interval .

Bamert would again be involved in providing the first of the third term for Pertzel and with Hogan and Campbell, gathering a mountain of possessions and bobbing up with goals to extend the lead, the latter kicking his from off the ground 35 metres away from the bigsticks, the Fielders hopes of premiership Caulfield sporting the white shorts, had glory appeared gone . Goals to Pearce and become the first team to qualify for B Grade Brett Sinclair gave the Fields some late hope, and they quickly received a taste of the but again it was Bamert, who after the sire n physicality that is associated with the higher grade, when in the first play of the game MHSOB bullocked the ball forward and Pertzel slotted home the opening major . The Unicorns Bamert, would kick the quarter's only other goal and with MHSOB midfielders LSi':.`if iGT1'1 dominating the stoppages and Svirskis winning the ruck duels, they had left C SECTION Kirzner 0 89 Caulfield goalless at the first change and with Ajax Rowley 0 64 more than a few headaches for their coaching Parkdale Baxter 0 56 Caulfield Gramm panel . and in the day's only light rain, kicked truly from 50 and routed any Caulfield hopes to leave the Unicorns commanding 32 point leaders . Competition best and fairest Matthew White had worked himself into the game and complemented a stellar season by snagging two final quarter majors, including a 55 metre running bomb . The Fielders didn't stop trying, particularly onballers Fallu, Frater, Will and Widjaja but simply did not have the answers to restrict a well drilled and committed side who ran hard and straight through the lines, responding to every challenge and adapting very smartly to the wet surrounds . A day to savour for the Unicorns, eventually running out impressive 49 point winners, with Jayden Pertzel adjudged the Michael Ritterman Medallist . RESERVES The Rovers made great use of the first quarter gale to effectively end the contest against the Jackas . After that, the hurricane fell to a zephyr and Ajax couldn't pull back the advantage against a club committed to salvaging some silverware for the season . Hampton victorious by 52 . On a personal note, thanks to all of my C grade club correspondents for their invaluable support. The report can only be as good as the information received and their assistance has been greatly appreciated . Congratulations to University Blacks Seniors on becoming only the 4th We say farewell and thanks to team in D-D 1 Section since 1932 to go Phil Stevens for through a season undefeated, and two Flags into the bargain! A fabulous being such a performance and a fitting tribute to great worke r Ray Wilson and the entire ensemble at on behalf of the VAFA and a good friend to D1 Section . Phil made a Blacks for all their hard work ! n "'^ ous contribution to Iifting th e The bottom 30cm of my white recognition of the VAFA in the wider Moleskin trousers were badly stained community since taking over in when I departed from Box Hill City and also gave 1989, Oval last Saturday evening our Administration a . Well done Su e excellent drainage system and the Anderson for adapting admirably to her expanded oval was surrounded by a moat g fnance responsibilities, without losin several metres wide . However, th e on her Tribunal and Investigations drains did work because by the time Coordinator & other roles Head Groundsman, Greg Doyle, . Matthew removed the central covers (with the Nyhus has settled in quietly and give n assistance of a bevy of Blacks players, thanks chaps!) and the Ressies took the field, the water table was mostly below ground and the footing for the two matches was surprisingly good ! Thanks to the on and off field officials of University Blacks, Banyule, & Old Mentonians, your adherence to uniforms and procedura l requirements was exemplary and made life easier for John Bell, Keit h DI RESERVE Sharkie, & yours truly . Thanks also Fitzroy Reds Capodiferro 40 to Andrew Pirchan, General Manager Fitzroy Reds tvicKerrow 32 of Box Hill Hawks, for his assistance Aquines Hughes 27 throughout the Finals period . our IT capabilities a big boost, thanks Matthew. To Kate Balme, our front desk star, thanks for all your help . Then there's Agate, Ocker, and Cliff, about whom too much could not be said so I won't, but I'll have a beer with them anytime! ! THE GRAND FINALS SENIOR : Banyule

University Blacks v

Given the difficult, sloshy conditions, the skill levels displayed in this game by both teams were remarkable, and it is a real pity that the weather was so unkind, because BHCO is a superb venue and Blacks and Bears are filled with talented footballers . After this game, no one could possibly argue that Blacks weren't the dominant force in D1 for 2004 ; whenever they were under the hammer, which was frequently, they ratcheted up a notch to keep the Bears at bay, and answered every challenge thrown at them . After opening up a 4 goals break in Q 1 kicking to the Score Board end Blacks defied every attempt by Banyule to get any closer, and this in spite of BIG Dave Williams's clear ascendency at the centre throw ups . Dave Gayfer seemed to be everwhere for the Bears, Tom Wise never let up in the packs, and Chris Taylor was also hard at the ball all day . Loose ball contests were red hot all day but player discipline was exceptionally high, so there were few "finals flare ups" to mar proceedings . While the game was not the spectacle it could have been on a firm ground, there were many examples of seriously clever play, and none better than Joe Sibilia's "Maradona" goal off the ground while running in the opposite direction! Bryce Shaw capped off a very good season by taking out the John Manton Medal for the shear quality of his work for Blacks in and round the

many packs . The Kempton Bros, Matt & Paul, Andy Costello, Sam Price & Robbie Scarlett were all somehow singled out for praise in a very even Blacks unit . AND COP THIS, no Blacks player arced up at or back chatted a field umpire during the entire match!!!! Discipline like that is not only a tribute to the Players and Coach, but if universally applied, would nearly solve overnight the biggest single problem in the VAFA today, UMPIRE NUMBERS!! ! RESERVE : University B lacks v Old Me n ton ia n s

"Can the fairy tale finals run of the Panthers continue?" Well it was a nice thought but the Blacks made sure it didn't happen! Old Mentonians gave every last joule of effort, but Blacks had their measure in the difficult conditions to become very worthy recipients of the Ressies Flag for 2004!

So fortune, while the likes of Chivers and congratulations to the Bullants as a club, Schneider ensured that the Bullants kept and to each of you as individuals, and good their noses in front at the main break . premiership drought but also arrested a slump that saw it relegated twice in just five years . A brief overview of the club's history should illustrate just how far it had fallen . The Bullants, who celebrated their 30th anniversary last month, finished third in the first of its four years in A-grade in 1984 . However, since its relegation from the top flight in 198 7 , the club experienced a steady decline through the grades . And when it was relegated from D-grade last season after winning just four games, the club plummeted to its lowest ebb since 1978 when, in just its fourth season, it was competing in E-grade . Despite the weight of history Bullants supercoach Steve Easton, who can now add a VAFA premiership to the six flags he won in the Diamond Valley league, was so confident of victory he told the Amateur Footballer last week his side would win . The "very good feel" in the Bullants rooms before the game only enhanced that confidence . While many thought the heavy and muddy conditions, the result of an overnight deluge, would assist the Bullants and hamper the Panthers, Easton was disappointed to see the ground in such a deteriorated state . "I just thought psychologically they would have been up because they thrashed us in heavy conditions at their ground (in round 1 7 )," he said . "We beat them (in the second-semi final) by seven goals on a perfect day. " Despite the heavy conditions, Easton knew in the third quarter his side would not lose after skipper and Anthony Fellows medallist Greg Chivers, aided by a legbreak Shane Warne would be proud of, kicked a 45-metre goal to put the Bullants five goals up. The Bullants started the season with a string of narrow victories against the bottom four clubs and after defeating every club in the section finished the season with two resounding victories against the minor premiers . "We gathered momentum as the season went on," Easton said .

As for the future, Easton expected his side would continue to improve . "I'd be disappointed if we couldn't be very successful next year," he said . The same could be said for Old Carey . With stars Andrew Kent, Allister Parton, Travis Bull and Damian Shutie all no older than 23 and with their best football ahead of them, the Panthers will get their chance to atone sooner rather than later . Let's hope the Panthers, who worked so hard to earn promotion this season, do not suffer the same fate as last season's grand finalist Peninsula who dropped back to section D2 after only one season in Dgrade . Footnote Congratulations to La Trobe University on taking out the reserve-grade premiership . Under the tutelage of Glenn Taylor, the club also played in an under 19-grade grand final and was the best performed side outside the top-four. Yours in football, "The Qwill" P- Wue y

The first quarter of the A Section Grand final gave the impression it would be a great tussle as the Old Xavs an d Old M elburnians registered 8 scoring shots each in the first quarter. Only the Xavs' accurate kicking gave them a 10 point advantage at the first break . The Xavs extended the lead to 4 goals at half time but then unleashed their full power to kick 8 goals to 2 in the third term . It was only 8 goals in the last term by the OM's that gave them some semblance of respectability. This win, 22.14 to 13 .17 for the Xavs, extended their monopoly of A Section in recent years and created their record breaking fifth flag in a five year period . Of the many excellent players for the Xavs, Bourke (8), Bowen, Cranage, Wood, Stoney and Blood were considered the best . Eabry, Kennedy, Lovett, Holme, S Theodore and Topakis (4) received the plaudits of their match committee . The premiership line-up B: S Lethlean, D Stoney, D Landrigan HB: R Coughlan, C Kelly, J Hawkins C : J Bowen, B Cranage, A Dillo n BF: T Woodruff, A Jones, D Rennex F: T Fleming, M Bourke, D Richardson Ruc k : M Blood (Capt), S Wood, R Dillon IC : B Coghlan, B Hilbert, S Tucker Coach : Tim O'Shaughnessy In B Section Old Trinity kicked away in the first quarter with 6 goals to zero against MHSOB . The OT's were never headed and the final score, 13 .9 to 7 .12, was just reward for their leadership of the section throughout the season . R Phillips, S Kennedy, D Burrows, Sutcliffe, Stickland (6) and Balazsy were great for Trinity . Cassell, Skinner, Bamert, McIntyre, Woodley and McCully performed creditably for the High boys . The premiership line-up B : C Frost, J Stickland, M Pawsey IIB : C Phillips, J Arrowsmith, A Andrews C: S Kennedy, A Richards, J Sutcliffe HF : D Balazsy, R Phillips (Capt), L Kennedy F : D Heighton, D Beardsley, D Burrows Ruck: A Ramsden, T Stephens, G Hatfield IC: R Ramsden, S Dann, R Burrows Coach: Leigh Carlso n The C Section Grand Final was kick for kick in the first three quarters as Whitefriars and Old Mentonians delighted the crowd . The Friars opened up the throttle in the last term and their 5 goals to 3 enabled them to run our comfortable winners, 15.15 to 12 .9. Best players - Houston, Pasqualotto, Reidy (4), Bateman, Pawlik, Hilton

(Whitefriars) and Bournon, Solley, McKay, Acreman (5), Campbell, Kuramoto (Mentonians) . Whitefriars' previous premierships were 1988 (E), 1998 (D) and 1991 (C) .

The D Section premiership went to AJAX, who had come from third position after round 18, as they beat Bulleen Templestowe 22 .19 to 17 .14 . Best players - M Halphen (5), P Goldberg, Rajch (4), B Goldberg, Levin, Gelbart (AJA)Q and James (9), George, A Parris, Glover, Jones, C Parris (B/Temp) . This was only the fourth senior flag for the AJAX Club since their admission to the VAFA in 1957 . They had previously won in 1966 (E), 1975 (E) and 1979 (B) . I Clearly the two best sns in A Section, Old T:.elburnians and Colle :;lans, faced one another in the grand fmal. By half time Old Melburnians held a 7 goal lead and Collegians had only managed 1 goal . The Wesley boys fought back to trail by less than 4 goals at the final break but Melburnians raced away again in the final quarter and finished 14 .18 to 7 .19 . It was huge celebrations for the winners as they took their first A Section prize since their "golden run" of three consecutive flags in the top section in 1953, 54 and 55 . Best for OM's - Jeremy Nicholls (Jock Nelson medallist for best player in the grand final), Susa, Webb, O'Brien, Lovett and T Witts. For Collegians, Pollock, Kerr, Palmer, Kenneally, Bennett and Hinchen . Old Trinity received a fright in the last term in the B Section Grand Final . They looked to have it in the bag with a 8 goal lead at three quarter time but Uni Blues had other ideas and rattled on 6 goals to nothing, finished full of running but ran out of time . Trinity held on 16 .7 to 14.11 . For the winners, Van Der Hoek, Norman, Sutcliffe, Hatfield, Seuling and Alibon were best . Cavalier, Kirsanovs, Wilson, Edge, Worsley and Furphy were great for the Blues .

It was a great day for the Ormond Club when they "won the double" in A Section with both seniors and reserves too strong for Collegians . The main game saw a brief fight back by Collegians but Ormond were too powerful ; final score 17.11 to

Premier League . Tough day at the office! Luckily I managed to conscript 'Iron' Mike Tyson into his debut for the .D3 scribe . Well 17 : - ° ,a, Chris

The pressure got to Rupo with senior players dropping powder puffs in front of goal when the heat was on and this proved costly as Bromley showed his class kicking a team lifting goal just before halftime . The momentum had started to swing Oakleigh way just up before the half time break . The talk over a few soft drinks at the main break was that Rupo had no hope and it was a matter of time before the game was busted open . The heat was as on as Oakleigh turned up the pressure cooker and started to climb over the top of the boys from Sunbury keeping them to 1 point for the quarter. Oakleigh again couldn't convert in front of goal missing sitters from dead in front ,

: la ielgh . Me . -e They certainly too, the drop from D2 in their stride and did a great job rebuilding the club . Well done! C® 3 .~er, . : :. _ : to Rupertswood however when the dust settles, hopefully they can look back on a great year with some pride . Have no doubt that the major issue facing Rupertswood is the need to progress up the grades, something they have achieve d

with style . Anyway, here are the of M iste r Tyson . With the predicted weather of 10 degrees, rain and hail a tight tough contest is what I expected to see and that is what we got . With the Oakleigh crowd comparing Rupertswood with Port Adelaide regarding their finals' history, I believed that they were getting a little to ahead of themselves . Rupertswood had come to play . With the Oakleigh crowd targeting Whitehead trying to throw him off his game, he soon shut them up by kicking three goals in ten minutes to get the ball rolling. Wasted opportunities by Oakleigh in front of goals proved costly and we saw Rupo take a goal lead at qtr time . Rupos backline was under the pump in the first 15 minutes with skipper Collins

the eventual Vic Zanin medallist Chris Hogan couldn't kick over a jam tin from a set shot 20mtrs out and had the ball touched on the line . I wandered over to the Oakleigh huddle at the last change of ends to find a rather subdued Chris Moore asking Ash Kitts to make the cream rise one last time, and that he did . With Kitts on fire and Simon Cammis providing plenty of drive of half back Oakleigh were home . Yet again they squandered opportunities in front of goal but they were $ 1 .01 on the sportsbet as Rupo failed to fire across half forward . The last five minutes seeming to provide as much hype as Jana Pitman's knee injury but Rupo just couldn't get their neck in front . The end result was the cup wasn't going to Sunbury and the Oakleig hboyswedtfinhop f the ladder . Commiserations to Rupertswood that last hurdle was too high but with the success of their U/19's they have a strong future in front of them . As for Oakleigh let the good times roll enjoy the moment and let the champagne flow . . . .

lami?n i>naerson (Green 10 ) First year with the VAFA . Previous stints at SFL and VFL . Has adapted to VAFA football extremely well and will no doubt be one of the umpires "in the mix" for Sunday's match . Excellent rapport with players and clubs . Geoff Caulfield (Blue 17) Former AFL field and boundary umpire, also in his first year with the VAFA . Has brought a vast amount of experience and has acquitted himself extremely well in season 2004 . Geoff's ability to communicate effectively and excellent knowledge of the game have made him one of th e best umpires in 2004 . Albie Firley (Red 5 ) Albie has demonstrated in 2004 that there is no substitute for hardwork, positive attitude and the willingness to give his best . 2004 has seen Albie "blossom" and put himself in line for higher recognition . M ichael Sneddon (Yellow 15) This veteran umpire has shown the benefit of consistent performances and a "no-nonsense" approach, which coupled with his outstanding fitness levels sees him once again in contention for one of the "big 2" appointments .

by Leah Gallagher & Steve McCarth y Finally it's over The fat lady is preparing to sing "IT' S OOOOVVEEERRR" to finally close the 200 4 season, for some umpires it has been a twelve month odyssey for others - well, slightly less . However at 5 :00pm on Sunday we can all, as a group let the hair down (if we have any) and pray it's not going to happen again for another four months . Celebrations Congratulations to the 2004 senior premiers MHSOB, University Blacks, Bulleen/Templestowe, Oakleigh and Old Westbourne and of course to the umpires who officiated . All the best to the competing clubs this weekend, and to "our top four" who thoroughly deserve their appointments . A tale of two Richards 1 . Richard Evans at Sandringham last week did the noble thing of offering to look after the valuables bag which had all the senior umpires' wallets, watches, keys and phones . That was fine until the end of the game and after the presentations had taken place, when in the rooms the umpires had not seen this bag produced or even Richard. The bag wasn't available because it was in Richards's car . Do you think that is a problem? It is if Richard has driven back to Elsternwick for the night, after a quick call to Richard he had to do the U-turn and return to Sandy. 2 . Richard Eastwood enjoying the after match back at the rooms last week, tried to do the right thing and keep under the limit but he didn't have to worry as Kenny Mc Niece who wears the same jacket took Richard's jacket (with car keys inside) by mistake . Unfortunately Kenny doesn't drive, so the keys as of Saturday night have not been returned and Richard's car was last seen looking very lonely in the Elsternwick car park . Poor Richard, this on top of losing his casual socks after the game . BOG We know that on grand final day it is the job of the field umpires to judge the BOG in order for a medal to be presented . Unfortunately Macca found himself as (in the) BOG prior to the game at Central Reserve last Saturday . Unfortunately

he needed long stops in the car park as well as on the ground . Thanks to Cooky for his help. Book revie w Just a quick plug for an inspirational book worth checking out called "The Phoenix Rises" written by Mentone Grammar teacher Colin McGill . Colin's battle with adversity and recovery from two medical disasters is truly uplifting . Makes those niggling little injuries seem trivial . Copies are available from VAFA headquarters for $20 or contact David Murray.

Socially Remember to attend the BBQ and Band night after the A grade final, let the hair down and go crazy. Time to say goodby e All at the VAFAUA would like to say goodbye and good luck to the outgoing CEO Phil Stevens as he moves on to a new stage of his life . Stevo has always been a great support to the Umpires Association and umpires in general during his tenure. All the best Stevo, we know we'll see you at various VAFA grounds in 2005 and beyond . Thanks for everything . Than k you To Benny, Jerka, Bob and Shane thanks for your hard work over the season . Whilst all your decisions don't please all of the people all of the time, it's a tough gig and the umpires appreciate the time and effort put into it . The support by the large team of observers is also worth a mention . Benny and his team couldn't survive without the assistance of these people . To Jason, yes you flogged us at times, but we were fit enough to get through our games on the weekend. Thanks Jason for your work on the track . To Troupy and Elise for attending to all our little niggles at training . They could always patch us up and send us on our way. There's no doubt we go through more ice than The Titanic ! Both Macca and Spider would like to thank all the people who have supplied info over the year and remember "Umpiring - the non contact sport" . I wish!! ! Roll on pre-season . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

taking out the double in winning premierships in the Seniors and Reserves . The flags are just-rewards for the club after putting in some significant ground work over the past few seasons with the commencement of an Under 19's and Junior Club . Well done also to Stuart Balloch who took out the Tony L,'hite medal for "ie best player on the day . Cc s also go to Kew who must now re oup for their transition to D3 .

Review Senior Grand Final - Old Westlsca rae versus Ke w Old Westbourne went into the Grand Final full of confidence having accounted for the Browns three times in season 2004, however, with storm clouds looming, it was going to be anyone's match . The first quarter began predictably with Kew gaining the early ascendancy as La Franchi and Mainsbridge took control of their key positions . The Warriors though, did not read the script, and after their slow start, began to lift with their key runners in Frankie Pavez and Micky Baulch creating havoc on the wings . With centurion goal kicker Justin Horsburgh being well held by the Browns, the Warriors were forced wide and to kick over his head . This plan worked well though, and after some good work from Trav Edwards, the Warriors managed to go into the quarter time break 7 points up . A little shell shocked by the Warriors determined play, Kew came out full of fire after the break, however, they were again bewildered by the Warriors fierce determination, and in one of the quarters of the season, piled on 6.6 for the quarter to run out to a massive 41 point lead at the major break. The goal spree included a Peter Daicos-like goal by Pavez, where his left foot banana kick was slotted through deep in the left pocket to the great delight of the 1,000strong crowd . Westbourne coach Jeff Wilson implored his players to keep attacking the ball in his half

time adc'ress, an :>a)ecte dditas( that the Kew lin weupwoldthr everything but the ~ kitchen sink a t their younger opponents . However, the crowas left by what could only be described as "shock and awe" as the young guns withstood everything that was presented to them, and with Hamish Hodgson now dominating the middle, and Stuart Balloch rising in stature, Westbourne kicked a further four goals to one for the quarter as Kew all but gave up . A spectacular leap by Warrior "Jucka" Horsburgh, one of the quarter's highlights, epitomized the Warrior dominance of the game as the pro-Westbourne crowd was whipped into a frenzy . In the final quarter, the Warriors tried hard to kick further ahead, but were well held by the Browns, as Westbourne ran out deserved winners and D4 premiers by 55 points . The premiership, the first senior flag for the club, was also the swansong for playing coach, Jeff Wilson and Warrior veteran Damian Billman after many years of service for the club . The win was a fitting tribute to these great Warriors .

However, Warrior coach Steven "Slim" Leitch, implored his players to be on their game right from the start as their superior fitness would assist them overrun an older Kew line up later in the match . His strategy worked wonders and with Warrior superstar Mark "Millhouse" Aquilina in everything, Kew went into the half time break 5 points behind with the work of Johnston playing a major part in helping his side keep pace . The second half saw Kew regain the ascendancy as Pietersen and Dennis lifted and it appeared as though the Browns would run away with a predictable win . However, once again the Warriors showed why the club is one that is going places, and with a steely determination the likes of Troy Edwards and Jarred Mason ensured that the final quar . -wouldgrihtnew The final quarter was a test of nerves, however the experience of Warrior veterans Adrian Board, Dave Moore, and Jason Akarana assisted Westbourne to become the club's first-ever premiers as they managed to keep Kew scoreless while adding 2 .3 themselves to win the match by 13 points .

Bit of a mix up w€t n s awarded at the recent Vote Count - -Cit. It seems in round 3 of the U19s, a r was awarded 3 votes . Unfortu--y the votes were meant to be awarded to a . it3er, an U19 player whose original registration form showed in two places his name spelt differently, hence the wrong data entry of the votes . The sad fallout was that Kristian Butler's 3 votes created a tie for the Under 19 Section 2 Medal with D . Cerantonio of Old Essendon . quick ball movement to keep the opposition scoreless at quarter time . It was more of the same in the second quarter, though Camberwell did manage to slot a couple of goals through, in response to the Lions' four . Collegians half time lead of 57 points was more than enough, but the Lions were hungry for more and finished with six times as many scoring shots as the hapless Wellers . Rigzin, Shanks and Taylor kept on plugging away for Old Camberwell but could be forgiven for not giving a continental by halfway through the 3rd quarter as the game was well and truly shot. All that remained was for the co-captains in Stone and Michael Rose to hold the premiership cup aloft in front of an adoring Crowd . Section 3 Old Carey had the game by the scruff of the neck at halftime on Saturday as an 11 point lead in atrocious conditions meant so much more . Still, the OC were to come to rue their failure to convert in the lst half as they only managed four more shots for the game, whilst a rejuvenated Parade turned it on when it really counted . Spinner may some key positional changes with Peck into the ruck and Morrissey to FF, as well as Whyley and Hussey swapping from CHB to CHF. After a cruel broken arm to Giddings, Jason Berthet stepped into the breach and produced a stellar performance to win the Peter Harris Medal . The Raiders increased their pressure and started to create several Old Carey errors. At the final change, the complexion of the game had changed dramatically as the hunters became the hunted . Evans had been closely shaded but was still producing for Old Carey, with Howgate and Niven in good support . They started to work their way back into the game and it was very tight in the final minutes until Azza Serafm produced probably his most memorable moment in footy . With a block from Peck, Serafin had a clear path to the ball and collected deep on the boundary line in the pocket. A quick glance to the top of the square saw no joy there, so Serafm turned on a sixpence and snapped truly from a near impossible angle . The result was enough to take the wind out of the Carey sails . Final margin - Parade by 8 points . Section Blue St Johns would've looked at the skies on Saturday and thought their prayers had been answered as the conditions were tailor made for a mud-wrestle . If ever there was a chance of dismantling the Demons' machine, this was it . However, the raging hot flag favourites has other ideas and their 1st quarter effort in kicking a winning score before the 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2604

lst break was a testament to their focus and superior skill . Continuing on from his great season in front of the sticks, Ridgway managed 4 snags on a trying day for forwards, and Brad Meehan ended up with the John Simpson Medal for his BOG efforts . Whilst Bentleigh had dominated the first 3 quarters, they still only lead by 23 points at the final change . The eternal optimist would've pointed out that St Johns were only 4 kicks behind, but that was the equivalent of light years on such a shocking day for footy . In the end it mattered nought as the Demons registered the lst goal in the last quarter and romped away to a 50 point win . Carmody and Magee were shining lights for the JOCs who had performed brilliantly to make the grand final but, as suspected, were not quite able to match the Bentleigh boys . Many thanks to all my club correspondents for the season including Ben Carbonaro (Rupertswood), Andy Dalrymple (Whitefriars) and Mark Spinoso (Old Parade), as well as Peter Mitchell (Peninsula) and Shane Regan (Mazenod) . Your input and efforts for the season are much appreciated, and this column wouldn't have been the same without you . Cheers and good luck to everyone in 2005 . Section Red The Fitzroy Reds completed a flawless season of football last weekend, defeating La Trobe University by 37 points in the Red Section Grand Final . Undefeated in season 2004, Fitzroy led at every change, defeating the university side for the fourth time this year . Recipient of the Section's Sharpshooter and Best & Fairest Awards during the week, Fitzroy's Kane Maghamez was simply inspirational kicking six goals to take his season tally to 111 . The grand final victory topped off what has been an incredible two years for the solid forward, Maghamez bagging 208 goals over the past 18 months with Fitzroy . After rain played havoc around metropolitan Melbourne on Saturday, the skies fined up for Section Red's Sunday afternoon grand final, favouring the minor premiers . La Trobe had come within 8 points of the Reds early in the season on a damp and heavy pitch, and were only going to be contenders if the heavens opened . On a relatively dry oval Fitzroy clearly outclassed their opposition, Bombaci, Zika and Greenwood all amongst the best. The Red's Connor Dullard was awarded the Max Lyon Medal for being best on ground, while Ulph, Lambert, Robertson and Davies were named as best for La Trobe .

Umpiring a grand final must surely be one of the highlights of an umpire's life . Like the footballers participating, it requires dedication and commitment ; an unflinching self belief; an enduring passion ; and a sustained fire in the belly . To prepare for a grand final is not easy. You experience an array of feelings and emotions that are foreign . From the moment you receive that seemingly elusive appointment, to the playing of the national anthem, to holding the ball aloft to start the game, to the final siren sounding, you will be enveloped by immense feelings of excitement, pride, anticipation and hopefully satisfaction . I remember all too well the palms of my hands being so sweaty driving to my first grand final, I could hardly grip the steering wheel . To my mind, the singularly most important factor in umpiring grand finals is preparation . Physical and mental preparation. This is what builds confidence and ensures success . Like any significant challenge or performance in life, the better prepared you are the more likely things are to go your way. Luck seems directly proportionate to preparation . Outstanding performances in any field often appear to be given ivit.h consummate ease, yet really they belie the hours of painstaking preparation endured beforehand . To any grand final aspirant, here are my tips : 1 . The obvious ones are : correct diet, right amount of sleep, good level of fitness and good people skills . 2 . The less obvious ones are :

a) Simulate match scenarios . I would always go down the park the day before and imagine every conceivable skill drill and situation that could possibly arise on a football field . Rehearse what an umpire should do . Simulate where to run and what action to take . Then when something expected or unexpected occurs you will 56

THE

be well placed to react appropriately and make the right decision as though you knew it was about to occur. b) Know the rules intimately. Your sound knowledge of the rules should bc refreshed from cover to cover the nighi before . (The rule book used to adorr my bedside table throughout th( season!!) . c) Avoid emotional disturbances whethe they be work related, personal o domestic . Keep distractions to minimum . Have a clear head . d) Expect the unexpected, e .g . a count behind the play incident; runner in 4 metre area ; umpire not hearing sire etc . e) Sweat the small stuff. Attention t detail on seemingly insignificar matters is the polish that separatc you from the others . Ensure t1whistle is soaked so the pea resonate at the right pitch . Make sure the lace on your runners are white, If ti minute detail is catered for, the re will foll ow . 0 Umpire the same way you have year. After all that is what got y ( here. The only difference will be t1 intensity and obviously the stakes, b your running to position, yo interpretation, decision making ai execution should be no different . g) Guard against peaking too early a feeling as though you have umpir two quarters before the game h begun . Relaxation techniques a exercises are a must. h) Most of all, enjoy the experience . i) Lastly, look up into the sky and tha that lucky star because you ne, know when or if it will shine on y again . The last column for the year, and the most important as the naming of the Trainer of the Year is announced . Firstly, thank you to all the people and clubs who nominated their trainers for Trainer of the Month and thus Trainer of the Year. The winner was very hard to pick with so many good nominations, but with very good input from Rob Duncan (Club Warehouse), the sponsor of the award, and the VAFA it is with great pleasure that I announce that the "Trainer of the Year" for 2004 is Stacey Dimitracopoulos from the St . Bedes Mentone Tigers Football Club. Stacey won the August/September Trainer of the Month so this will be a big shock to both her and her club . The award will be presented to Stacey at the VAFA's AGM in December. Not only has Stacey been a superb trainer, but her club (St Bedes Mentone Tigers) has been a good supporter of Club Warehouse by ordering their medical supplies through the sponsor. This is one of the criteria considered for the award. Thanl-s very much to Club Warehouse for its sponsorship of the Trainer of the Year Award.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those clubs who have contacted me to comment on what a great thing the column is for both trainers and their clubs . It has been a great way of getting to pass on information from both the VAFA Executive, the VAFA Trainers' Association and medical people e .g. Dr George Janko, SM A Just because the season is now over, the work put in this year by your Trainers' Association will continue through the off season, so if you have any queries about accreditation or re-accreditation or anything else to do with the role of trainers in the VAFA please email me and I will do my best to get back to you with the right information . Have a great time off and don't forget the email address chriskl5Cbigpond .co m Editor's note. Congratulations Chris on producing the column each week of the season . It certainly has advanced the cause of the Trainers' Association and, like the coaches, gives a point of contact through the weekly "Amateur Footballer." Phil Stevens .
