A&B Preliminary Final s C-D4 & U19 Grand Finals
^_ie i,--,ay of the District s When Ormond plummeted three grades in just over half a decade, it was seen as the beginning of the end of the district club in amateur football . Suburban suburbs no longer teemed with young blokes who automatically gravitated from their local junior side to the seniors. Instead, all the inomentum appeared to be with the school and university sides, who utilised their top uoteh facilities and capitalized on the growing i i end for recent school-leavers to stick to pi<< : ing with their old school buddies . Today, thanks to some shrewd administration, fiercely loyal players and a determination to prove the doomsayers v: i-ong, heralds the return of the district club . Five clubs, Beaumaris, Fitzroy Reds, Ormond, Werribee and Elsternwick, are chasing premiership glory and all are a realistic chance to win . Ormond and Oakleigh also have Under 19 teams engaged in Grand Finals . Elsternwick have certainly had quite a year, celebrating 100 years of existence with a gala function which attracted over 350 people . Over the years, they have battled ground disputes, possible mergers and low finishes but have also provided two 300 gainers (no other VAFA club can boast this) and the Mahony family, who have completed more than 1300 games between four of them . To cap this off, they finished season 2005 with just 3 losses and a percentage of more than 250 and go into today's Grand Final as a warm favourite . Beaumaris (C Section) and Werribee (D3) are the perfect examples of clubs who compete i, .th many other local clubs (paving big bucks) yet who have managed to build extremely successful amateur sides . The Sharks compete with a myriad of sides in the Southern Football League and have built their club on the back of a strong junior
program and the loyalty of long-standing senior players such as Murray Pitts and Chris Martin (both of whom could have commanded big dollars in local comps or the VFL but chose to stay with the club they played with as kids) . For a club that was formed 43 years ago at the Beaumaris RSL as a means of providing a footy club for the sons of ex servicemen who had moved into the area, Beauy has come on in leaps and bounds . Similarly, Werribee have overcome geographical difficulties, the lure of money in the Western region and the presence of the local VFL side to become one of the sleeping giants of the amateurs . Last year, they fielded a gun under 19 team, many of whom have stepped up to the rigors of senior football . Without question however, the district derby between Ormond and Fitzroy Reds will be the highlight of the weekend . If anything, Simon Kelleher is indicative of the resurgence of the Ormond FC . With the club on its knees, he was appointed captain at the tender age of 21 and has lifted the 'Monds back to C Section, picking up a league best and fairest along the way . Meanwhile, it's fitting that in their 50th year, Fitzroy have finally made it to C Section . After evolving from the Uni Reds FC (after a stint in the Melbourne metro League) a decision was made to change the name and represent what is Melbourne's oldest inner city suburb, adopting the Fitzroy theme song, colours and former home ground along the way . Both clubs have large supporter bases and it promises to be amateur football at its very best today at Box Hill ,
Best of luck to all teams competing for Grand Finals today . Jonat"ir__a oraa

A Walk in the Park Umm, yeah, not a bad team the Blues hey? I'd be interested to know how people rate that performance on Sunday against other amateur teams in history because I've certainly never seen a VAFA side play better . Just like last year's finals games against St Bernard's, Uni's ability to utilise the wide spaces of Sportscover Arena was unprecedented; every forward thrust seemed to emanate from a chain of half a dozen handballs . some relentless running and pinpoint disposal . Jim Scambler calmly dobbing four goals from outside 60 as if they were kicks at training was the standout while their defenders North, McKinnon and Havter (who was belted early but came back in style) didn't give Haileybury a sniff . The only blow was the serious knee injury to Paul Butko . who was carried off after what seemed like a fairly innocuous incident .
Haileybury were terribly undermanned though Mark Seccull tried hard all day and Shane Walden did a good job on the Sheik Medalist Mark Paterson . No wonder Niece was throwing wobblies in the end however ; it must have seemed like a carbon copy of his finals games last year with St Bernard's .

most . It's incredible to think that this was their first win by over a goal since round 10, yet her e we are talking them up as ~ potential grand finalists . They're the sort of team that can do anything oi their day . . . . apart from beat the Blues of course a that is just impossible . And Scotch? Well, they looked a million dollars a times throughout the season but the playoff found them wanting again . It was their older guy like Kitchen and Nettleton who stood up unde pressure but it remains to be seen whether th Cardinals are up to the September action . Straight Sets? - Preliminary Final preview OK, let's plump for a miracle and say tha Corrigan, O'Farrell and Steinfort all play . Highl unlikely . but you never know your luck in a bi city . Even if Haileybury are at full strength, I sit reckon the ball's in Xavs' court . The nine go, onslaught will lift their confidence no end and no, they are back at Premiership Park . . . . c Oekleshaw Park . Maybe Haileybury have to many big bruisers for the wide wings of leagu headquarters . And mavbe the=='ll just be shel shocked after last week's pas :ing. Whatever t h

Scotch haven't beaten Xavs in a final in 46 years but at time of Sunday's 1st Semi, it appeared that the drought was about to break . Suddenly, in the time it took George Bush to tour hurricane ravaged New Orleans, their season was over and another premiership thrust went down the gurgler . Nine goals to nil says it all really, with the move of Scott Mollard from defence to attack pivotal and some big names in Beetham, McDonald and Chatfield stepping up when needed

Well done to John Corin, Mark Lowe, and all at DLS on their great win last week and well earned promotion back to A . And to David Biggs who won his second B Section Best and Fairest in a row . REVIEW First Semi Final Old Essendon started very well against Old Brighton and were three goals in front at the first change and playing some pretty good footy . Tom Wilson was winning in the ruck and helping David Biggs and co to run the ball into attack . But the tempo of the game started to change during the second term as Old Brighton started to find some of their early season form at last . With Toby Ewart getting on top in the ruck Jon Perrett was able to continually drive the ball forward where MacGillivray and surprisingly Josh Dickerson were able to capitalise and slot through some goals . It became hard for Old Essendon to penetrate the Old Brighton defence well led by Andrew Edge and as the game wore on the Tonners just played better and better as the pressure of playing so many mini finals in the lead up to this game took its toll on Old Essendon . For Old Brighton another chance and a crack at Old Ivanhoe, for the Grammar boys a disappointing end to a good season in making the finals considering the injuries they encountered during the season . Second Semi Final
A wind free Sportscover Arena in September is certainly a rarity but this is what we saw on Saturday as firm favourites Old Ivanhoe squared off against De La Salle for the right to be the first side into A section for 2006 . The Hoers took the honours early but by the main break the little De La players had got themselves back into the game . Old Ivanhoe
8
appeared to get on top in the third but pardon the well used pun bad kicking is ba d football and you cant expect to win a game of footy let alone a semi final by kicking 4-16 in two quarters . By the 10 minute mark of the last the Hoers had opened up a 13 point lead and looked as if they would be the first to the higher section, but alas it wasn't to be as DLS continued to burrow in and run and run kicked the next 5 and at the final siren found themselves 17 points to the fore .
oth s ides are likely to have a coupl e ^ inclusions from what lined up Pa .,~ week " Ben Mannix, Michael Duggan, the Harrison ; and Michael Brown all good for DLS, Luke Lochran was sensational while Scott Curatok and Frangiacomo could also hold their head : up .

_Yn THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER,
PREVIEW Old Ivanhoe have had 7 days to recover from what must have been a debilitating loss as they tackle Old Brighton who will go into this game with a lot more confidence than they had a fortnight ago . A one all record during the season makes for a great game both sides are likely to have a couple of inclusions from what lined up last week which can only make them better . All the vagiaries of Amateur Football are on show today as Old Ivanhoe who have come so far this year and have clearly been the benchmark have to fight like tooth and nail to regain composure and try to earn promotion and another crack at DLS . The obstacle that stands in their path is a Tonner unit that has the same ambitions and dreams . Hope the weather is as good as last week where the Tonners height may trouble the Hoers . tough to tip as I rate both sides highly but I will give Old Ivanhoe the nod to bounce back and win a close one . ~' RESS 04)F2RE S PO N I?ENTS

There will be many times that, as coaches, .vs will ask the question : "What's in it for me?'
or you have been appointed at a new club . The reinstated coach's current year's performance has been reviewed and a full review of the club's on field achievements has been conducted . The newly appointed coach has researched the club's recent history and has been made aware of their expectations for the upcoming season . The journey begins with the Football Department setting out key objectives for each of the club's sides and a review of the current team lists has been undertaken . There is a high level of expectation and enthusiasm as the planning process is in full swing . The tasks of recruitment, preseason training, off field roles, practice matches and the allocations of on field coaching duties are activated .

Their goal was not to loiter in C grade for longer than necessary . With one game to play, the Sharks have won their way through to the Grand Final and will return to B Grade in 2006 after downing a determined OP . It is fitting the two best sides of 2005 will go head to head for the HJ Stewart Cup . Both clubs deserve the fullest praise for not only having the strongest senior sides in the competition, but the best two in the reserves as well . Who wants it most?
t 's fitting the two best sides of 20â‚Ź15 will go head to head for the Stewart Cup . " REVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL SHARKS V OP' S There was fierce pressure and tackling from both sides and each was finding it difficult to pierce the opposition defences . Wonnacott, Graham and Ensor were impenetrable at one end for the Sharks, whilst Richardson was stone like for OP. Beauy always seemed to have the answers, but they struggled to deliver a knockout punch and this kept OP interested, who themselves had long spells of controlling possession and peppering the big sticks, but couldn't find the centre . A great team lifting goal where Heath capped off a terrific afternoon with his second, gave the Sharks the breathing space they needed and ensured their Grand Final place . Curran and Hughes tried hard for the vanquished, whilst Beauy's McNicholas aided his defenders, by slipping back and taking some telling grabs .
-_G --- , KS V BEA S The Blacks wil l justifiably start favourites . They have been the premier team all year and in their three head to head meetings with the Sharks, have comfortably prevailed . Of course that means very little, today . Beauy will need to plant a seed of doubt early in the minds of the Blacks players and it's imperative they get away to a fast start . They must put goals on the board, pressure and harass the opposition and run the ball from defence deep into their scoring zone . This may make Uni begin to worry themselves and struggle under the weight of expectation . However, this is easier said than done and the Blacks have a great belief they can withstand any challenge . The Blacks know this game will not be easy, but they are well coached, well organised and they play for each other as a cohesive unit . They have dynami c

midfielders and their bigger bodies will give them the edge . That edge will mean 2005 will be the Year of the Blacks . C S DICTIO N COMPETITION AWARDS NIGHT Monash may have only won seven games for the season, but that proved no obstacle for competition Best and Fairest winner, George Smyth, who polled a staggering nine best on grounds, a two vote and a single to be a runaway winner on 30 votes . Old Paradians Adam Curran and Andrew Hughes shared second place with 17 votes . Congratulations to Old Paradians, David Boundy and Ajax's Art Lewski who were named in the All Australian, Under 23 side to tour Ireland . The ten C Grade coaches also selected both players, along with the Wellers, David Loats, as the sections Most Valuable Players . C GRADE 2005 TEAM OF THE YEAR
It's always the hardest part of the season . Each year the scribe has the unenviable task of trying to select the best players in the competition and squeeze them into just 22 places . Of course, there are a greater number of footballers that warrant selection and that is where the difficultv stems . I have tried to get a representation of all clubs and attempted to play people in positions where they have spent some of the season (it's not always possible) . There will always be controversies over some namings or omissions, but whilst some may be disappointed to miss out, the group selected have enjoyed wonderful years for their clubs and are all worthy inclusions for the 2005 C Grade Team of the Year.

Congratulations to Ormond on being the 2nd inductee to C Section in 2006 . Given the proud history of the Monds, it will give the Club a huge boost to be moving in the `right' direction ! Ormond's good news continued with Simon Keheler & Michael Miller jointly winning the Section B & F! That has to be a first, two from the same Club! Congratulations from us all Simon & Michael you've both had stellar seasons! Well-done also to Phil Cianci, Fitzroy Reds & DI's 2005 top Goal Kicker! Dare say Burgo would prefer an Anti-Goal award for F-Backs ! Huge thanks to my fellow Duty Officer for this Finals Series, Geoff Reilley and his expert gate crews from Caulfield Grammarians ; Fleur Katsnelson, Warwick Rudd, Chris Grigg, Nick Edwards, Gavin Winter, Sam Wood, Grant Poulter, & Scott Fitzgibbon . And best of luck today to all the competing Clubs & to our Umpire Teams of the day !

group took the legs & the game out of the Two Blues grasp altogether. Bryce Deledio roved superbly for the iVlonds . Michael Miller's exhilarating dashes tormented Prahran, Simon Keheler & Darren Bailey were rocks in defence, & Luke O'Brien did a superb rucking job against a talented opponent in Michael Radywonik . Leigh Stafford was full of praise for Craig Hall, Bill Watford, & Focea Fox's efforts on the day and for the Two Blues team in general for simply making it to the finals in a year full of injury disrup ; ons . C= := did not look like losing aft( lloping off to a 4 goals lead over the > by g i's end . Tony Bournon's 8 goals was a big assist for the Panthers, but one player alone does not deliver a win, & Tony & his 23 team-mates now take their place in a 2nd successive GF! Great effort chaps !

PRELIMINARIES SENIOR A southerly prevailed at sox Hill throughout the day & the : seemed to have wasted it by kicking only -g-S to Prahran's 2-2 in Q l . Ormond corrected that by playing a solid defensive 92 that saw them cling to a 5 points lead at Half Time . Prahran had problems early containing the Mends 'runners' & in the 2nd half, the drive generated by this

GRAND FINALS S E N IOR Fitzroy R eds and Ormond meet again for this season's main game, and while the Monds are better equipped today with Danny Byrn & Leigh Deledio back in, they still have the same problem of over coming the pressure Reds applies on demand whenever its opponents come within sight of goals! The 2nd Semi is a good example, Monds had more scoring shots & only lost by 33 points, but most spectators would

This could be analvsed for weeks, but in the end it resolves out to, who wins when the Section's best Scorer (Monds) meets the best Defence (Reds)? Graham Burgen has no doubts, the defence, an answer with ,:rhieh I'm sure David Matthews will differ, but for me a rested Reds is going to be an even more formidable opponent . This will be a very tight contest, as was the 2nd Semi, and it could be even closer on the scoreboard, but the Reds should still win by 3-4 goals after a truly great game !

The Grand Final match-up many had been predicting by midseason has eventuated after an eight-goal haul from spearhead Leigh Brennan guided Rupertswood into its second consecutive decider . The Woods gave themselves an opportunity to atone for their nine-point defeat to Oakleigh in the D3 Grand Final last year, their 50-point hiding of perennial finals heartbreakers Peninsula seeing them achieve a feat which many clubs find hard to accomplish - rising two divisions in two years .
Rr- o will find the rampaging 0b G far tougher beast to tame than 2 Pirates, who have now lost !, ' r from their past two seasons in D2 . Pi: ;-,-, goalkicking machine Shaun Payze couldn't continue Ins dominant form, which had seen him bag 101 goals this season, held to just one in his team's most important match of the season . while Rupo's ovn ace inside their forward 50, Brennan . sured the hard work of his midfield would not go rewarded. oods played a solid four quarters of football, every quarter . With the game still on the r, iuarter time, the Woods drew away in
booting four goals to four behinds e victorv .
senior team not in the finals bolstered their ranks with several senior players . But the Trobers have muck to do to stop the charge of Tekka Verge's unbeater mob at Como . Awards Congratulations to Shaun Payze from Peninsu lontakigubheJ . Fullerton Medal for the best and fairest player in D2 and the Sharpshooters award with 91 goals . Either way, they should get plenty of value in front of goal . The Ogs however have won all three previous contents against Rupo this year and have been pretty convincing in doing so . Although they will have to be wary of what happened a fortnight ago when Rupo cut the margin down to less than a goal during the third quarter, and indeed missed a shot at goal that would have put the men from Sunbury in the lead. This was after Old Geelong lead at quarter time by 40 points . The obvious lesson here is that nothing less than a four quarter effort will be required to win this game, lest you either get pummelled, or let a handy lead slip through your fingers . As for this week, I do expect more sustained pressure from Rupertswood, but I do think there is too much class and talent on the Old Geelong side to lose this match . Kimpton and Casboult, to name but two, are capable of a swag of goals, while Vasey was a lively presence around the ground in the second semi final . Vickers-Willis provides great leadership and ability wherever he plays .
Obviously Rupo aren't exactly struggling in the talent department either with the West boys, Burrows and Gaunt also likely to feature prominently . However, I do have to pick a winner, and so it is that I pick Old Geelong by 24 points (I won't put anyone under any further pressure by nominating a best on ground, however) . In the Reserves, I'll take the Ogs over the Trobers, so it should prove a memorable night (and morning) at Como Park. ANDREW'S TIPS Seniors Old Geelong Reserves Old Geelong

In the A Section preliminary final .- - __ .,n :_ ,started strongly and gained a three goal lead in the first term . Xavs came back to gr `n the lead by a point at the main break . The second half produced some brilliant, tough football with each team scoring 5 goals in the third term . 'Moves a plenty' by both teams in the final term with the placement of Marcus Olive to full forward, seemingly a master stroke by the SKOBS as he kicked 2 critical goals . The Xavs were not to be denied however and their confidence in each other was obvious as they worked their way to the front and maintained it to the end, finishing with a frantic 2 point victory . Blood, Landrigan and Andrew Dillon were excellent in the red and black and Ellis (3), Ford and McQueen-Parton were fine back-ups . SKOBS' best were Callery, O'Keefe, Garvey, Grigg, Bowles and Olive (4) . Xavs now- had the chance to continue their premiership run with another 'crack' at St Bernards in the Grand Final . The B Section preliminary final between Mazenod and North Old Boys saw many early mistakes due to the intensity of the game . Mazenod kicked 5 unanswered goals in the second term and at the half time break were up by 21 points . Mazenod's midfield of Meehan, Polan and O'Donoghue were on fire . NOBS made a number of changes but could not reduce the margin significantly and in the final term Mazenod increased their lead for a final winning score of 16 .11 to 11 .17 . Harrison booted 5 for the winners and the best were named as Dunne . Lancaster, Ryan, M Murray, O'Donoghue and Tucker . North's best; Casboult, Lock, Saunders, Dunn, Wilkinson and Collison . Mazenod had won the right to again challenge Old Brighton the following week .

The Blues were outstanding in the first term with 8 goals to 1 and held an 8 goal lead at half time and increased it by a further 2 goals in the third term . It was a disappointing end to Ormond's season and their only sound players were Sebo, Symes, Whelan, Edgell, McConvill and Connell . The 34
Blues had ma winners but t'u~ ,~bestwrWilon Blood, Worsle-- . Henderson . 1-lavier : and Furphy . Mazenod move d into the B Section grand final after disposing of 'I'laerry, 15 .10 to 8 .11 . Their opponents, local rivals, Ivanhoe, also enjoyed a great season but were not good enough in the big game . Old Ivanhoe's best were Dyson (3), Haros, Jenkins, Veal, Sigley and Douglas . Ivanhoe's better players were Bullen, Kennedy, Tucker, Lynch (3), Nibaldi and La Rosa . In D Section, Ham pton Rovers finished a magnificent season by celebrating an easy grand final win over Thomastown, 21 .9 to 13 .9 . The Rovers' champion key forward, Mark Crawford, kicked another 7 to take his tally to 118 for the season . Melnjak, Anderson, Fletcher, Amoore and Ariz were also great contributors for the premiers . Alberti, Plant, Reid, Valeri, Papaionou (3) and Tony Fellows were Thomastown's best . In E East Section St Leos' forward, Brendan Vaughan, was another centurion, his 5 goals took him to 120 for the season and his team won the flag overwhelmingly, 15 .17 to Aq ui nas' 6 .12 . The result in E Central was a great win by Uni Reds 13 .13 to North Erunswiek 10 .18 . Seniors Review - C i .
c; 6 :IL.c. V
A game played in two halves, 5 goals (4 in the second quarter) from West Brunswick's skipper, Steve Benjamin saw the black and whites head into the major break 29 points to the good . Irving and Hamilton were dominant through the mid field, and it looked as if last week's heartbreaking loss and taken the wind out of the Joc's season . However you don't finish 2nd on the ladder without showing some old fashioned ticker . A couple of moves, and starting to get first hands on the ball in the middle saw the "Green Machine", get back into action . Walker started to dominate across half back, Rydquist and Arnold in the middle, and along with Ryan and Phaedonos up forward St Johns kicked 6 goals to 1 for the quarter. Taking a 4 point lead in at three quarter time, and more importantly all the momentum going forward.

An inspiring three quarter time speech from West Brunswick coach Angus Hamilton seemed to reignite the flame of the Brunswick boys . It was always going to be tough going in the last, and with Pietsch and Jelbart moving to the mid field the tide started to turn . West Brunswick hit the lead and looked set to hold on for victory . St Johns however refused to concede, and Big Azza kicked a goal with 2 minutes left on the clock to hit the lead by 1 point . Desperation from both sides, bodies on the line, and total commitment to each contest highlighted why finals footy lifts 30% . A lucky bounce here, or an extra vard there and the result could have gone the other way . St Johns victors by 1 point . Two finals, 1 draw and a 1 point victory, a dose of valium maybe in order for the match committee at St Johns . To the losers, while gallant will be ruing an opportuniÂąv lost .
Ea: v L;`. st, 1 v 2 from the ho_<i_- and away . a
draw last time they played, a fairly healthy dislike of each other, the script could not be better set to determine the title for D3 . Will it be the hard running, highly skilled Werribee, or the big hearted, street fighters from Doveton . Both teams have their fair share of stars, which is important in finals . Keogh v Rydquist, Taylor v Diaz, Stornebrink v Phaedonos, Lee v Skinner, Palmington v Chalk and that is just for starters . Both teams have shown the ability to come back from positions lesser sides would concede from. Werribee against St Johns in the 2nd Semi, and St Johns in the Preliminary last week . Both have great on-field leadership, Keogh at Werribee, and while not captain, Walker is the man down at St Johns . All indicators point towards a classic, but I can't seem to shake the feeling that the last two heart stoppers will take the edge off St Johns . The only way I can see St Johns stopping the B's is by jumping them early, and setting up a defendable lead by half time, unfortunately I don't see this happening. For me the well rested Werribee side will have to much in the tank for the Joe's and should salute comfortably . Werribee by 42 po;,lts .

nd Final s Good luck to all teams this week in their quest for the holy grail, to the umpires who have been given grand final appointments, well done and congrats for the hard work and effort during the year . For those who just missed out - we'll see you back to prove the advisers wrong in 2006 .

Congrats to all the Best and Fairest winners, some runaway winners and a couple of tied results . Did the umpires get it right for all sections? (No complaints were heard!) Also awarded were the M ost Promising Umpire, which went to Robert O'Gorman and Umpire Of The Year to Leah C:<:i.lagher (back to back for the scribes) well done to both of them . (It was an absolute pleasure as last year's winner to present the cup to Leah, so well-deserved in what's been a huge year for her a eca . ) Clubs on the night had offered some video footage of games during the year and it picked up some interesting umpire action, what we have learned from this is that Simon Stokes has a change of pace (downwards) also the camera puts on another 20 pounds on top of the extra 20 you have Stokesy . Chuck was seen in amongst the action and could have received the pass and fed of the handball
A couple of weeks ago a few people were quite concerned at training after field umpire Jamie Kvins copped a nasty whack to the face after a young goal umpire accidentally kicked a football into him at very close range . Jamie was pretty upset and certainlv let flv with a few choice words . Yes, we should all concentrate on what we are doing! Now Jamie, last week did you actually hit a football into boundary umpire Brendan Corcoran's face causing him to leave the track with a blood nose? Terribly reckless . Your payback was on the wrong person .
Grand Final Brunc h Get in quick for the traditional A Section Grand Final Brunch next Sunday, tickets are at S30 each and we have a great guest speaker in VFL/AFL player and St .Bernards coach Simon Madden . See a table captain to be included . Of course if you're unable to make it down to the park on the big day, join To mmy and Macca on Southern F M 8 8 .8 for the grand final preview followed by the live broadcast of the big game . d you ! Don't give it away! If you enjoyed your first year, come back and have another crack at umpiring in 2006 . If you've got any mates or know of any retiring footballers who'd like to join you, contact the VAFA's Umpire Operations Manager, - ' :as G ood m an on 9531 8333 or email brian(-:1afa .com .a u

Whilst Elstrnv?c' : have been :_ of t : i e year . Ur . ;>rary's have been the story of 'fle finals series . Two convincing wins see them promotion bound and a great chance to pull of a remarkable premiership ! Well done to both the hard working Presidents in Adam i-Iankin and Georg Koumantatakis and their respective committees, ma he weather be fair the football Pnthralli i St . Mary's started t'here they kicked off last 1 eek, slamming on 9 first quarters goals to leave Bulleen stunned and the game all but over. Try as they might, Bulleen wasn't able to muster a challenge, never getting closer than 36 points . Crilly was the star for the Saints, whilst Wright also racked up possessions . Up forward, Cope and Ryan did all the damage . Bulleen were well served by the evergreen Pasinati, Fradkin and Mann .

Like all good sides, the r have a wonderful mi: ip ~or,jard, with th, tall, high leapin -~ Hi, nicely supplemented by the pock( t rc~ Scott Grace . Capped off with a no nons : ,e backline and it is not hard to see how Cie Wicks finished well clear at the top of the table . The major factor that has been borne out during the finals campaign has been the evenness of St Mary's . They have not relied upon any one player but rather a spread . Wright, Crilly and the Armstrong boys have been great all year whilst the work load up forward tends to get shared by the likes of Cope, Tagell and Bull. The clever Richardson is also another Saint who needs watching. The team is knitted together by the veteran Schembri, a grand warrior for his club .
The plusses are in abundance when reviewing the ;'icis , - . :I :>t it is hard to cc . : e Grand Final Preview The all conquering Elsternwick meets the in form St Mary's in what promises to be a hard fought encounter. You can't underestimate the benefit of momentum and finals form, ingredients which the Saints have plenty oil. Of course, the Wicks have written the book this year on form, with a club record winning streak capping off a remarkable start to the year .
The two clashes during the year saw results very much in favour of the Wicks, recording two victories around the 10 goal mark . No doubt the catalyst for E1st : rnLVrick is their

Perhaps only oi, : game over the past month might cause a problem however no doubt the canny coaching staff has tailored their training program to suit . On the other hand, the Saints have proven me wrong all finals series and winning form is good form . The other variable is the weather with some raining potentially evening up the game . Is an upset on the cards or will what many D^ pundits consider the inevitable occur and the Wicks record a win? It is certainly the done thing to say it will no doubt be a hard fought affair however in this case have no doubt it will . The Saints form is too red hot to allow anything else . None the less, tl Wicks have worked far too hard on and o the field to let it slip now, selecting them to win by 3 goals with jack Neil best on ground .

Frail, Cummins and Murphy are the key to the Saints chances whilst the Turtles will be hoping for big games from midfields Turner and Whyte and for the veteran Krohn to continue his goal kicking ways . iiight stick with the Saints on this one !

Marcellin vs Collegian s Minor premiers Marcellin are poised to clai m their first Section One flag in fifteen years when the Eagles meet Collegians at Parkdale this Saturday afternoon . When these sides met two weeks ago it was all one-way traffic, iviarcellin romping home by 83 points in the second semi-final with the game over by the long break . Peter Augustin, Jonathon Bortolotto and Dan Fraser were all impressive, their much-anticipated return from senior football adding yet another dimension to an already powerful Marcellin squad . With Winstanley and Stafford also excelling Marcellin look the form si~ 'headingto .

Collegians to put ~~ . . e up more of a fight than a fortnight ago, the boys in purple and gold impressing last weekend with a spirited reversal of form against De La Salle . Kicking seven goals to one in a season defining third term . Collegians attacked tl-a footy with a hunger and vigour that the side has lacked for the past few weeks . Zimbachs, Tardiff and Lynch were all prominent around the footy, while Bushnell and Powers caused plenty of problems for the De La defence . Similarly Crania, Lightowers and Bridgeman were all solid inside their defensive fiftv, as the Lions made a welcome return to form, Despite Marcellin starting near-unbackable favourites one can't completely write off Collegians . Many of these boys have biggame experience, many of these boys know the elation of grand final glory, and all of these boys know that they've absolutely nothing to lose on Saturday afternoon . If Collegians do get up they'll become the first side since 1982 to win to win consecutive Section Two and One flags, and in doing so will break the club's s9xty-six year Sectio . ending the contest by the final change . Their astounding conversion rate saw Rupo into the GF by 51 points . GF Preview Danyule -v- Rupertswoo d The Boys from Sunbury have conquered The OC double in successive weeks, but now face up to a fresh and firing Bailvule unit, who have taken all before them this season . The Bears have genuine match-winners in Skicko, Toull . Shepard-Meuller and Tsingaris who will have to be watched very closely by the hard-running Rupo boys . I'm a big fan of the "take-no-prisoners" Sunbury style, but think the weather could be a huge factor here, with a heavier track favoring the bigger bodied Bears . If the Rupo midfield can win more of the pill, they're a chance, but I'm favoring Banyule . Banyule by 17 point s Section 3 - relianinary Final Review University Blacks -v- Oakleig h
I had my suspicions the Oakleigh boys were ready for a surprise and Blacks would struggle to recover from the intensity of the Second Semi . Sadly for the students, I was correct, but it wasn't until early in the final term that Oakleigh had the game in their keeping . With six players bagging multiple goals, the Oaks had plenty of avenues to work with, but their backline were fantastic in hold the Students to 7 goals on a day tailor-made for high scoring . Now they can look forward to the challenge of the Grand Final . Grand Final Preview Old Paradians -v- Oakleig h Can the unfancied boys from Scammell Reserve de-rail the back-to-back Raider train? My mail is that, with the Raiders' senior season finishing painfully short of promotion, the juniors will have most of their stars back, and only a couple of injury doubts will prevent them from fielding a full list . They've managed to win most weeks without their best 22, and I feel won't let this chance slip . Oakleigh will throw everything at Parade from the get-go, and don't be surprised if they try to ruffle a few feathers . Once it settles down, the Raiders will know what to do.

Preliminary Final Review Mazenod -v- Sslesian Scorpion s Mazenod recovered from last week's disappointment to steamroll their way into a replay against Ormond . Leading by 6 goals at the main break, the Nodders refused to take things easy and surged to a 10 goal lead by lemon time . Bogar was everywhere up forward, and had good support from Bayliss and Bailey . Regan was sublime and Salesian had no match for him . A disappointing end to a promising season for the new boys on the block, but they should be proud of their efforts . Grand Final Preview Ormond -v- Mazeno d Must say, I think the Nodders really have their work cut out here (and I don't think I am alone) . Still no-one expected the Pies to get close to the Lions in 2002 did they? Mazenod will certainly go in as massive underdogs this week, but in the last 100 minutes of a footy season, strange things have been known to happen . Everything has to go right for Mazenod to have a chance here, they've got to shut down Chisholm and Bailey, whilst hoping that Regan and Bogar can fire again . If that happens, they're a chance . Otherwise, it'll be another blow-out . Ormond by 44 point s Section R ed Grand Final Emmaus St Leos vs Kew Minor premiers Emmaus St Leos will be aiming to capture their second Under-19 premiership in six years when they meet Kew on Saturday morning in the Section Red Grand Final . A highly-anticipated rematch of the second semi-final, narrowly won by Emmaus in trying conditions, Emmaus will be hoping to maintain their flawless record against Kew the season and stitch up the club's second-ever Under-19's flag. The form side of the competition the Animals have been unstoppable all season, destroying teams by demoralizing margins while restricting fellow finals contenders to single goal scorelines . Coach Ben Pilley has been stressing all season for the boys to maintain 100% effort, 100% of the time, a request that has been answered week in, week out .
Baranello, Brayshaw and Stafford have been inspirational in the middle this season, as have Croughan and Lalor up forward who si t continued page 50 41-

to- from page 4 9 one and two on the section's goal-kicking leaderboard . With 81-goal forward Croughan absent from the line-up in the past couple of weeks, Lalor has stepped up to the plate, his eight goal haul in the second semi taking his 2005 tally past fifty. After a week off expect Emmaus to come out firing, their opposition Kew outclassing fellow finalists Old Westbourne in the Preliminary final last weekend to secure a Grand Final berth . Competing in their first Under-19's final series since the late 1970's, Kew have surprised most critics this season by making it all the way to the final day of the season in their first year back in 19's competition . A marvellous rejuvenation for the RMIT affiliated club, expect Kew to fight until the end as they vie for the club's first Under-19's flag.
