~.JOR O-COV&~ SPONSO R
In my first year of writint out the VAFA for The ; it was decided - becaus " "e re so many close calls - at on the best-and- ss : the votes from the last f rounds of the season we i be counted down . It was a fascinating evening and extremely entertaining and 1 taven't missed one since . Being a punter, I the having a couple of small coins on the Brownlow Medal and, obviously . I always try to predict the winner of the Woodrow Medal . 1 do much better with the Brownlow. In fact, I think I was on Old Trinitv's star big man Andrew Ramsden every year except last year when he won it , And last year I was confident Old Naileybury's energised midfielder Paul Corrigan was g , ";g to give it a s,- '~o except he was, oddly, nowhere near it. And what is it about that rc ? cn boys have been on the podiu,,, ; :e times in s en :,i Joel Rice sharing it with Rambo in 2005 . A Section scribe Jonathan Horn has a- predicted another Marcellin be,, to feature heavily in ,, . count this year, Brett Dobson . And everyone is :I u p chances of C ;', .::me's James Hope . Hope is in _rb .i and his abi r t! -ea __ lay is sensational . I .voultln't be surprised to see big R ; gain, either, and Old Naileybury's star rc ri ood was certainly eye-catching in the early part of the s~ m . And his team-mate Andrew Jenke seems to be figuring in inn best on a regular basis as well. In B Section, Old Essen,' i's David Biggs has collected the previous ",°,o I"T ¢ A oo ~Is b, .` "s de`-,tion to the VFL now > ~ n >n~
-is . _)uiiet is enjoying a stella r year ; . :;n Old Esser art. oi Blacks captain Matt Kempton is always outs :-nding .
In C Section, the season is all about St.Bedes!Mentone Tigers and scribe F-~--er Cameron likes the Tigers' centre-half -back and captain Luke Wintle . But Fraser also expects Ajax on-bailers An Lewski and former Sandringham player Jason Ritterman to feature in the votes and Ormond midfielders Leigh Deledio and Michael Miller . Di Section scribe Peter Williamson believes Therry Penoia star Justin Crotty is a big show, and 0!d Carey captain Al McQueen-Parton, as a goal-kicking onballer, is certainly eyecatching .
Bulleen-Templestowe captain Greg Ghivers has also been in terrific form for his team and should poll . in D2, scribe Jono Healy is thinking about Ivanhoe Assumption ruckman Chris Hunter, who is having a superb year, and Aquinas key defender Stephen Tibb, who has been in votecatching form . Peninsula Old Boys captain and the section's leading goalkicker Shaun Payze should also be in the votes, but as we all know, key forwards find it hard to a ct the attention of the umpires these days . But in D 3, 0 ; sr s; i. . ._nt forward Chris Sharp has tr .is . ie snarpest of sharpshooters, _ , i!e 61 .4 . Gavan also trs __- Inswick pair Ben Batters and Bu t Irving are also a ge : g o And in D4, scribe Ed S!~i also thinks power forward Ed Woods is certain to capture the eyes of the umpire with some big bags of goals, including one of 17 and anoth~r of 10.

Loo: : ; as s Well I ~ n't work it out, can you? Saturday's University Blues line up featured the following players . . . Torney, Wilcox, North, De Crespigny, McKinnon, Paterson, Gleeson, Clarke, Lowcock, Kordick, Sturrock . Off the top of my head, that's nine prerr!-ship players, one Woodrow Medalist, one comp MVP, C, , Nelson rr '.st, six state players, six best and p s . At Ic to last year's B Grade premiers . pure, it's amateur footy, it's a I in . nut iet short. The heavy track at Chel a tee and it was their brawnier piayers, _ Cu avon their last two B & Fs), Sjourke Price anc Bru„ ThomNuon who reveled in the bog . Their season s comparable to their 1999 campaign, when the y B Grade to figure in the finals straight away . of the day was at Camberwell, where the unfancied finals hung on in a very high standard game against th e F:aufanders . Ben Doherty, hamstrung by journalistic commitments the week before, slotted back and made an immediate impact while former Banyule player Shaun Lorenzini continued his stellar season, drifting forward to snag two malors. Scotch is right in the mix, despite barely a peep from James Gerstman . Bernards fielded a pretty handy line-up against Marcellin with cagey half forward Tate Pearson returning to the side and VFL player Michael Hooper `Pitting up for his first VAFA game since the 2003 Grand Final . Very much an enigmatic team the Bermes ; when they're on their game they're as good as anyone but they really seem to draw the short straws injurywise . Congratulations to first gamers Grant Baseggeo and Joseph landomenico . Xavs were mighty impressive against De La . Tim Clarke was deadly around the goals, his Ballarat mate Travis Ruyg (could we make those shorts a bit bigger perhaps Ruggy?) ran hard all day and Mark Graham played his best game for the club at CHB . They looked bigger, tougher and better organized . Still a very hard team to catch tipswise however. De La were very disappointing and looked a bit light on around the packs . Leigh Harrison, probably their most dangerous player behind Rayson, did miss however and should return this week . Luke Seeger did a cracking job on the big man Handley. Oh and Benny Mannix has retired, with his dodgy back finally taking its toll. Ben was one of the most entertaining players you'd ever want to see ; his effort on debut in 1994 to help De la avoid relegation will be talked about in amateur circles for decades . Best game I ever saw him play was against Ormond, when he kicked six in the last quarter (after almost falling asleep in the rooms at half time), three of them from marks taken whilst lying on his back!
On Sunday, Trinity were coasting to a massive win before the Grammar I turned on an eight goal to three second half to just fall short. James Beaumont led the charge for OMs, while Andrew Cultrera was on fire early, kicking five first half goals . Richard Burrows and Andrew Prowse were the respective best players . Tim Horn (a fine surname at that) was the latest in a long line of kids to play his first game for OMs Shortened Quarters Well it's just getting ridiculous now. Change! Change! Change! Last week, I dropped into the Orrong Hotel for some half-time refreshments and as I ambled back for what I assumed would be three quarter time, Xavs were belting out their theme song ! Crowd Pullers Good response to last week's question . General consensus seems to be that Haileybury, Scotch and De La attract the biggest crowds in A Section . Today's Poser Who is the A Grade player of the year thus far? Answers to jonathan_g_horn@yahoo .co .uk Today's Tip s Haileybury at the Badlands . Lock. Scotch over OMs. Lock. Ivanhoe over Bernards . Lock(ish) . Uni over Xavs . Upset. Trinity over Marcellin . Toss of the coin . Ladies and Gentlemen, it's anyone's flag this year . . . . .Have a nice da,.

2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2000"
Old Haileyburians' congratulate .':'r ienke on hi s th game today. Andrew began his career in 1999 with the Under 19's and gained senior selection that year . Won Senior Coach's award in 2001 and has developed into, one of the best tap ruckmen in the competition . He is also one of the most prolific marks in the VAFA notching double figure tallies each week and in recent years has become dangerous around goals with a career tally of 60 majors . Well done 'Jenks' . Cameron Home also plays his 100th game for the Bloods today. Son of first OHAFC Captain, Andrew Home (19611981, 245 games), Cameron began his career in the Under 19's whilst still at school . Went overseas in 2002 returning the following year when in round 4 playing his 99th game, and injured his ACL, keeping him out of football until today. Hopefully Cameron has retained his uncanny judgement for marking in -packs and adding to his 104 career goals . Congratulations 'Homey' Congratulations also to Andrew Baker who played his 50th game last week. Former Haileybury School Football ViceCaptain, Andrew began with the Unders in 2002 winning Runner-up Under 19 B & F award that year, has played mostly in defence during his career, is a good kick, a strong mark, is hard at the ball and challenges the most opposing forwards . Well done 'Bakes' . Old Xaverians congratulate Daniel Higgins on his 50th game today, From Xavier College in 2002, he commenced in the under 19's and after a year off is finding top form in the Reserves. Well done Daniel from all at the club . De La Salle congratulates Simon Conway and Tommy Molan on 10 0 games, Simon commenced with the Juniors in 2001 and since has played 34 MSJFL, 37 Blues, 2 Club18, 25 Reserves and 2 Senior games . Simon made his senior debut in Round 4, 2005 and capped off a great year by being Reserves "Best in Finals" in that premiership team . A fine contribution from an emerging Senior player . Tommy commenced with the Golds in 2000 and since has played 14 Golds, 39 Blues, 37 Reserves and 10 Senior games . Tommy made his Senior debut in Round 2 2003 after Blues "Most Consistent" in 2002 and the same award for the Reserves in 2004. Both Simon and Tommy are tall mobile defenders who have strong potential to be good, consistent Senior players . M arcellin OC congratulate Richard Frisina on 200 games. 'Fris' has had an extraordinary career including a Reserve and three Senior Premierships . Fris is famous for his silky smooth skills and damaging left foot . He has spent the majority of his career at half-back but has been effective in the midfield and sneaking forward to kick goals . Fris is a popular clubman and it is appropriate that he now becomes eligible for Marcellin OC Life Membership . All at ' .', : rcellin wish Fris all the best on this big occasion .

Close for Mazenod on Saturday but still no cigar. After a close f :rst half where the M azenod defenders held the dangerous OEG forwards, sleepiness set in for a patch of the third where the Bombers got totally on top to go off with comfortable 35 point buffer at orange time . But the home side woke up in the last and got to within 5 points into the last couple of minutes until the Bombers steadied like a good side should, to win by 1 1 . The handy inclusions of Simon Garlick . Paul O'Keefe and Paul Greenham obviously strengthened St Kevins' resolve as they greeted the judge for the first time this year in a strong and impressive performance at Sportscover Arena . For the first time in 2006 they finished full of running, as the 6 goal last quarter shows . A furious game at Shark Park with both sides going goal for goal . Even the umps reckoned it was as quick as they had witnessed all year. By the final change the Sharks had totally exerted their authority, aided by accurate kicking and so took a 6 goal lead into the last . MHSOB hit back early in the last, but Beauy stuck to the game plan to win comfortably. Sean Come and Dougie Ensor were terrific down back, Calvin Barnes continues to impress, as did Lawrence Ferrari . For MHSOS, who are disappointed with their for , the ~ _- ;ient, Cal McGrath, Lachie Evans, and Lute : ::ell stood out. 8

oaaumari~, welcome Old Es^,° . to Shark Park in what should be a beauty . i did not lose a game in June, while the Sharks =ve gradually been getting better and playing some good footy . So this match promises plenty, both have terrific players in all the correct areas . Rather than try to keep my lead in the tipping contest I'm going to go with a gut feel an d select the home side to get over '

One of the Champions of Essendon (fifth on the list of 25), Simon played 378 games with the Bombers from 1974-92 . SV: When I finished playing AFL I didn't see coaching as the right direction for me at that time . I had opportunities to get involved in AFL but turned them down . I enjoyed playing football immensely and didn't think I would get the same enjoyment out of coaching as I did as a player. Over the last few years I have grown to enjoy the coaching side gre2",r; hence rr- involvement in St Bernard's .
and ho do you spread the workload ? SM: I have three direct support staff, reserves coach Andrew Bryson, assistant coach Garry Foulds and boxing coach Dominic "Rio" Degennaro . Both football coaches have input into training and preparation . Garry also works on young players' development and with the Under 19s . Rio works directly on player fitness . I also have a strong link with Greig Wood our Under 19s coach and Andrew Vinecombe our Warriors coach . GR : Does you r Bernart''s C is your

SM: I am working on developing a stronger link between St Bernard's Senior Club and the Junior Club as well as the college . I believe there is a great opportunity for St Bernard's, as a football community, to develop programs that will produce better footballers who will enjoy their football greatly and gain great benefit from their involvement. Presently I am looking to the club to appoint a player development/liaison officer to coordinate this .
Ha! *in adjusted your coaching style sinc e you r :,r d at St Bernards due to the par :icu l lu . . of °amrno" footy ? S-;: I hadn't really watched any amateur football until my son, Joshua, played a few games in 2003 . I was impressed with the standard . I still think it is a good standard but it is still a long way from AFL. rna :,,; conchinn support staff -J o you have

SM: Yes I have and I believe I will continue to do so . Coaching is evolutionary . The constraints of part time football along with the changing nature of the game and the outside influences on young peoples' time and their viewpoint will continually challenge you .

augers well for the future of the senior club . Whilst the demographics of the school have changed considerably
over the past decade or so there is still an impressive group of young footballers coming through the school into the Under 19s and then into the senior team . Some of these young players making a mark in the seniors include Lachlan Evans (captain of the U19s), Josh Richmond (captai n of the VAFA U19s side to play in Brisbane recently), Andrew Lim (2005 VAFA representative side), Steve Villani, Stephen Wrigley, Joel Kiteley and Daniel Wiseman .

Paul clearly sees his role as nurturing his young charges so they may take their opportunity in the senior ranks when called . At the same time, the U19s need to remain competitive as a team in Junior Section 3, and this they are doing well . No doubt there will be more opportunities for others are the season progresses. This club remains committed to providing pathways to our young men as they further their football careers, ensuring maximum enjoyment at the same time . Well done Paul . Keep up the good work .
The scor .` - ard in t' = 1 secm IF. r hut I~ be one of the most bemusing sights I've seen in my 15 ; ;~ a. : :rt1o footy. if we doubled each and every club's results to reach the end of the season, 4th spot will go to a side which loses 2 more games than it wins, and relegation will come down to percentage between 3 sides that are only 2 games out of the finalsii! ! But enough of the stas, at about the weekend's results weren't there a co!i!I,, _' ari ;s? First r r r' ;' forums are buzzing with resurgent PtiJBS, u fans tal .og up their mob - and why not? It was a truly gutsy effort by NOBSPC in a very low scoring game, with Barker's 4 goals for the Purple People perhaps providing the perfect polish . Heath Maplestone shone again throughout the day, ably assisted by Glen Masten and David Brady. Keen mathematicians will note that Monash won 3 of the 4 quarters on the scoreboard, more scoring shots, and 10 more inside 50's, etc, etc, but concede that the better side on the day won the game . Big Azza Williams was outstanding in the ruck for Monash, who are officially in 'uni holiday° mode and are making a habit of losing the close ones[! ! Old Camberwell -v- AJAX The soft track out at the Barn Yard made for a tough tussle, which was won by the Jackas' ability to make more of their opportunities up forward . Greasy conditions meant clean ballhandlers stood out, and here's where the Jackas were at their best, with their highly talented midfield trio (is it me, or do they use a permanent rubber stamp with those same names each week?) continually providing one-touch gathers and delivery up forward . Aaron Bloom provided 3 critical goals and Bradley Nissen's ball handling was as slick as his sublime hairdo. For the Wellers, Greg Tolson worked hard all day, both up forward & later when swung into defence, whilst Stephen Derry played well in the ruck. Hampton Rovers -v- Fitzro, You could hear the sound of crickets chirping at Brunswick Street as the Rovers "burst the bubble" in a 5 point thriller at The Boss. Those inseparable old mates Nip and Tuck were prominent throughout with no more than 2 goals separating the sides up until the final bell . Ronke took a 3rd quarter screamer for the Reds, defying the otherwise tricky conditions, but this still could kick-start a real surge . In the final stanza Hampton Rovers created and then frittered numerous chances, while the Reds had an attack of the fumbles, but would never give in . With a couple of minutes remaining, Fitzroy reduced the margin to 5 pts, then a superb chain of kicks and thrust forward looked to set up another easy shot at goal. To their credit, Hampton read the incoming ball better and a match saving mark gave them valuable time to let the clock run down . Everyone was jumping for the Green and Gold - how apt! ! 14

AJAX congratulate :- on I- j' .h game against Old Camberwell . Lowy issed 200t:, , th a serious injury but has fought back well to be a regular with the seniors . Starting in 2000 with the Under 19's and was part of the 2001 group that won the flag that year . The next two years Lewy played all games in either seniors and reserves before injury put him out for a season. AJAX looks forward to Lewy reaching more milestones . The great No .7 Paul F n rrar broke yet another longstanding record at the Frearson Oval when he played his 200th senior VAFA match for 째 last Saturday. Universally admired and still one of the first picked (or at least the first named in a back pocket), Faz keeps getting better with age and experience . Blessed with exceptional talent and a resilient body, there is every chance he can get to the magical 300!! Well done and thanks Faz, we've loved every minute of it.
Monash Blues salutes Conor O'Sullivan on reaching 100 games in the turquoise and silver . After starting in a blaze of glory in the Under 19s, "Condor" was absent for a few years trying his luck as a male model before returning as a key member of the senior side and 2003 Premiership player . A versatile and strong player, Condor has worked hard on his game and has added consistency to his natural flair and ball magnet ability. Congratulations Conor on reaching this special milestone and we all look forward to plenty more great games from the No .9 .

After two weeks chrring on the Soot roos jr, i;-n , y, i am back on board . Special tha- s rjst go the "three am 'los" that filled in for me last week , Re view Westbourne suffered its rst --at in tour seasons as they struggled to match arguably the ~st side in the competition, Benfleigh. The Demons with superior skill and physicality matched the Warriors all over i1ark, with Paul Dimmatina and Paul Holmesby starring . . so note as again Chris Sharpe who is in line for" ; tc- `-g -f goals . West Brunswick easily acct d S Marys in a percentage-boosting win . In r , the Magpies dominated play with Benny B~~_. .~rs _ id Sam Pietsch playing well up forward in what I am i d its only foray past the HF line for the season . For ` L--째 and Mark Purcell were valiant but ovE he classy Magpies . South Melbourne also won in a c_ -- tIainst an undermanned Swinburne outfit. Jack Cronan put in a big one for the Swans . assisted by the regular contributions of Cheevers, Washington and Aquiline, and the result was never in doubt . No reports were received from the Kew 1 UHS-VU or the Elsternvrick i Monash Gryphons matches (come on guys, help me out here!!), However, results were as predicted which mean that UHS are now in serious relegation strife while the Gryphons, although going down, have shown they are going to play a part in the formation of the finalists for 2006 . Prev iew UHS-VU host Monash in a match that is a must-win for the club. The Vultures still control their own D3 destiny, while the Gryphons are still a mathematical chance to make the finals . For my winner, it is a tough pick as the Gryphons have not won on the road and do tend to find the larger grounds a tougher proposition, while UHS have been competitive against the bottom 4 sides . As such, l am going for the upset and picking UHS-VU to register win number two and liven up the relegation battle for the remainder of the season . Things continue to go wrong for the Saints, and there will be no respite today against the league leaders, South Melbourne . The Bloods are travelling along nicely at the minute and will be looking to consolidate their lead at the top against the hapless Saints. It is not the result that is in question today, but rather the margin, so I will have a dip at that and say Swans by 79 points. It is a season defining match today as my preseason (and still current) premiership favorite in Bentleigh travel to West Brunswick in a match that could see the loser drop outside the four. The Demons impressed in their previous encounter with the Magpies, however it is a different proposition at the 36
use or Pain' "t" or--isld -'iilar t o Flemington Racecourst, wreaking havoc to v .-,,is clt . Bentleigh will b e - -- `or `irther improvement from youngsters Chris Fidler at rin Hunt, however, I am led to believe that "Cunning Cost' ` Hamma may have a few surprises up his sleeve for the visitors. As such, I an sticking with the Pies to win in a cliffhanger. The tipping does not get any easier as Elsternwick travel to Swinburne in what is a danger game for the Wickers . Elsternwick were made to work very hard last week against P,9nnash, and realistically the result may be decided at the Rr orback's selection table in that if Murchie and/or Higgin s e a much be'-- chance to win . Given that th e Si L lay, and the latter has missed th e a~ , ill not start and as such will n. ne is atatch that is a must win for th e club consiu'c ;ii,y i;G,,ir fall from the top four. Kew has lifted in these fixtures in recent years, and as such should play above their current ladder position as they attempt to rain on the Warrior parade . However, with a return of a number of Warrior stars, I think that the supply will be plentiful to "Jucka" and he will duly cor-째 a bag as the Warriors march home in a canter salute - Platters' 200th .

Well done Tearer, all at the VAFAUA wish you well for the big day and we're sure you'll enjoy the "pleasantries" afterwards, We also appreciate the hard work that yourself and others do in supporting us all by running around in the lower grades week after week . If you have an upcoming milestone or any other interesting news, please let either of us know and we'll inform the troops via this column . y Ed Sil l First up, congratulations to D4 umpiring legend, Dave D'Aiiera who celebrates his 400th game :jith the North Brunswick V Albert Park clash . A job well done ! laai , n,n rk and school results are in . E Ti A+ : Plenty of class across the park. Great semesters work. Power House A : Consistently in the top echelon . Proven performer s Hawthorn B : Got better as the semester went on . Box Hill North B : Proven they are in the top half of the class, now need to prove they can match it with the dux of the schoo l Syndal Tally He C : On a good day as good as anyone but plays truant occasionally . Wildcard in semester 2 . Bulleen C : Some stars have missed a few too many days. A bit of luck might see their fortunes chang e Albert Park C : Suffered from having to study at a friend's house whilst theirs was being repaired . Expect a better second semeste r North Brunswick C- : Slow start but potential there . Can't afford too many mistakes from her e Eley Park C- : Sparkling start before depth started to take its tol1 . Not out of their dept h Richmond C- : Improved on last year's performance . Continued hard work will eventually pay results . REVIEW An injury ravaged Power House managed to draw away from Box Hill North after a close first half. Haseler dominated in the ruck whilst Driessen off a back flank and Edwards up front with six goals were the best whilst Bell and Liston played well for BHN . Hawthorn managed to keep Albert Park at bay in a dour struggle at Glenferrie Oval . Good start to the Hawks whilst the Falcons never tossed in the towel in a keenly but good spirited affair. Collins and Ridley were the Hawks best whilst Borley and Morgan were AP's best . Rags to riches for Syndal as they recorded a big win over Richmond . Captain Cachia was dominant for the winners slotting 12 goals whilst Robinson also starred . Once again, Nuske and Speakman were Richmond's best . A bit of momentum for North Brunswick as they beat Eley Park . Great start for North set up the day who had stars in Pizzari and Robertson . Broadbear and Silvers were the Sharks best . Match of the day was living up to its billing as Eltharn and Bulleen were close at the last break . Buileen looked to have the momentum, despite losing some players to the dreaded
yellow card . Good sides . .in from these L circumstances however and the Turtles slippe d into overdrive to record a solid win . The returnin g Turn- jagged four for the Turtles whilst Foo was yet again amc 3t his side's best .
Probably last roll of the dice for both clubs as North Brunswick host Albert Park. As expected North have got on a bit of a roll in recent weeks and are only two games out of the four. Same for Albert Park who must be rueing the disruption caused by the Commonwealth games . North should win at home. Eley Park travel to Eltham . desperate to regain some early season form . Not exactly who you would want to bump into in those circumstances! Ten on end (starting to struggle for ideas!) for the Turtles . Hawthorn host Box Hill North . The Hawks are going along OK at the moment but will be meeting a fired up BHN, eager to retain their top four billing . Really close but maybe Hawthorn just . Richmond welcomes Bulleen and will be keen to put on a better display than last week . Bulleen will be just keen t o

Well here we are, round 7 of 2006, on the short path down to the finals . First and foremost, congratulations to all teams on their excellent performances in the games so far, the boys have really turned around and played some good, hard footy. This week at Elsternwick we are hosting four games ; three division 3 games and one division 1 game . Port Colts 2, the second side in division 3, are playing out of form Mazenod 2 ; who; coming off a bye are hungry to get back in the swing of things in a hope to make it into the top four and give themselves the momentum needed to play finals footy. Mazenod 1 should continue their great form and pull away with a win against bottom of the tally Lara in 1st division . Both Oven and Murray Jets teams should be too strong for their opposition Mambourin Tigers who play 0 & M's 1 and Moonee Valley who play 0 & M's 2, and secure their spots on top of the ladder, in third division and give them that e,;tra push to propel themselves into finals just a few wer's do n the track .
K< nanook 1 plays host to 2005 premiers Ballarat, which should go down as m-ch of the -)und, with both sides in superb form with I :ananot trying desperately to stay
at the top in 1st division and Ballarat just as keen to knock them off and go back to back premiers and attempt to move ahead of Mazenod and plant themselves in second spot . At the end of the day Kananook should walk away with the four points, but only after a nail biter. Kananook 2 takes on the formidable force of Port Colts 1, who stand at 6 wins 0 losses and are most likely to carry on this tradition this weekend . Bulleen Temp come up against the undermanned Maribyrnong Bulldogs, who are stuck down at the bottom with things looking grim once again for the boys this weekend, as Bulleen are showing good form and will be a tough task to overcome on Sunday . And last but not least, Parkside take on the Boxing Kangaroos from Broady, a very likely scenario is that both teams will throw everything at one another as both sit middle of the range and a good strong win will be exactly what they need to give them the push in a bid to play finals in 6 weeks time . This week Broadmeadows 1 and Ringwood get the rest, and the four points .

UfdDER 19 (1 j The half way mark passed quietly. Several teams have a head of steam while many are running on a treadmill slowly coming to a stop . "! think I've got the black lung pops . . .its not very well ventilated down there", has been heard coming from such teams as SKOBS, Collegians and good old BV - all of whom are battling the cellar right now. REVIEW Old Scotchy pulled off win number three for the year, beating an inaccurate Collegians by twenty points . Ben "Dim" Sims was good for the winners, while Nick Lawrence was steady for the losers , BV kicked three goals ten and ended up just three goals askew of Marcellin . Improving every week, Dean Scholes, and Dever Lucavic played well for the losers . In surprise of the round, Uni only ;ust scrapped over the line against SKOBS . The holidays are hitting hard by the sounds things. Could be a tough few weeks down at the main . Xavs assumed second spot by thumping Rupo . Dom Quinn was BOG for the Xavery while Rupo are relying on too few eacit><veek . The name Matt Quigley coming to mind . Mental note : shut M Quigley down and Rupp may prove far easier to beat in the future . In the last game of the round Do La put pay to St Bernardo in comfortable fashion continuing their impressive form .

itch at is round will see Rudd travel to Waverly Park up agains reo of the ble De La. Should be a cracking game but the leaders will hoko on for a good win . St Bernards need to chalk up a~avin to stay in to . ' of a finals birth . A comfortable win over Collegians should do the trick . Meanwhile back at the ranch, Marcellin host tlni Blues . Crunch game for both, but it's an upset for me - tslarcellin taking advantage of the Uni exam period , In other games, Xavs will run over By and Scotch to boot SKOBS into next year. Lock of the week - Portugal to beat England. Keeping it simple but there was too much lacquer on that thing last time in . Any feedback to beatonc&iabcorp .com.au . Happy punting ! ffPdDER 19 t2i REVIEW The Panthers-Wellers clash was an 8 point thriller, with Carey holding on after a late Camberwell charge . The top two sides battled in a physical slugfest that saw Parade jump to an early lead, however, several spiteful incidents allowed the OMs to finish victorious . Parade now know they can match it with the best, even for a half . In a!ovr scoring affair the Blacks narrowly conquered a very inaccurate Trinity by 3 points. Caulfield won the ham against the Friars, while Brighton took care of the Sharks at home . MID-SEASON REVIEW Sharks - 4/5 . Only unit to have knocked off the top side, but need more consistency to play finals . Brighton - 4/5 . Like the Sharks, Tonners haven't been convincing, winning in rounds 5, 6, 7, but then going down to the bottom side . Camberwell - 5/4 . Up & down, but have been able to hold fourth . Though, with contenders on their tail, seem apart from top 3 . Raiders - 7/2 . Still my flag toughie . Surprising Carey and giving OM a scare, this young side has the talent across the board to at least move up next year. Caulfield - 3/6. Fielders are struggling and pose no 48

Now that - . ch ter i has played all competitors, we have a clearer picture of tne strength of each team . It seems that few are certain finalists and that a real contest will unfold over the next six rounds to determine who will participate in the final series . M y tipping success rate in Round 9 was 71°a as not all matches went the expected way . I found this especially so `^ Section 2 where only one of my selections saluted .
i iniu 3 's( Mentone Tigers, despite the efforts esley, Rose and Kelleher, were no mu_ ., .a ran out victorious by 88 paints . Leaders De La S tile raced to an early lead against Old Scotch, who back to within three points in the last qua ' La steadied to kick the final four goals to giv,, ' ;s victory by 27 points . The match was of a an( rd, worthy of a final . ~t for the winners werE ,no!, Aare P( and L 3cotch, coach 7,,,dre „, Jonafl .- Sri ---. tel Whytcross played II . ~ Da 1 11_o :he top four through their 17 point -jes, who are steadily falling dow n
a furious pace as each team struggled to gain the ascendancy. For the first half, won by th e Reds by three points, each ;:afence as `_iant . half time, Monash coach Luke Columbies stung his players to perform better, which they did . At the last change, Monash led by twelve points . They finished the stronger and on by 28 points to strengthen their claim to Premier ' ouritism . Best for Monash were Paul Coughlin, Pi ,ndergast, Jarred Parsons and Matthew Johnst -ne . lViarce!Iin forfeiLed to VVhitefriars, who won a"scratch match" by 5 1 points .
01 2 defeated La Trobe University by 33 points at C ( o Park . In _2 morning match, Old Trinity proved too strong for Beaumaris and won by 17 points to consolidate their top four s . Grammarians defeated a depleted 01 Emm< Leo's by 54 poir s . , E~endo n -sed " ;i r

Mt L"_ dale proved me atoor judge because they recorded a 56 point v. .n c Old Brighton at Brighton Beach Oval . . . never an ea : ; place for a visitor to win . Surely now we know the easternmost side in the competition is a sectional power to be reckoned with . St Bernard's found form (and confounded me) with a 40 point win over University Blacks, who nonetheless cling to fourth place . Coach Andrew Vinacombe was pleased with the fact that all of his players contributed to the victory. Best were Couch, Saleme, Catherall and Vassallo . Collegians hi a percentage building victory over Therry Penola )ints . The Fit, by s versus Monash Blues match started at 56

Now that St Kevin's hold a see off a challenger todp, which I select them to do . Since Round 1 when University Blues defeated Old Xaverians 2 by fifty five points . their form has slipped . Today, without any great co cence, I select Old Xaverians 2 to win their seco- h o{ the season . St Bede's/ Mentone Tigers o~-: victory by nine points over Mazenod . Neither sir : has enjoyed much success since and today, at hc : : .e I select St Bede's! Mentone Tigers to win despite their run of injuries . Section 2 At home, Fitzroy Reds have the chance to consolidate after successive defeats . I select them to reoeat their first round victory over Old Brighton, although not by sixty six points . Mt Lilydale still can grab second spot so I expect them to defeat University Blacks again today to establish a clear psychological advantage should the teams meet again in a final . Collegians have improved greatly since they went domvn to St Bernard's in Round 1, whereas St Bernard's have not played consistently. The result, which could have a marked bearing on the composition of the final four, I expect to be in favour of Collegians who should move into the four as a reward . Whitefriars should have the talent to defeat Therry Penola at home and so remain a serious threat for the final four. Monash Blues should again record a big win over the hapless Marcellin, who face another long trek south

-eds should possess sufficient talent to Old Geelong . eaumaris faltered last week but they should be able to defeat La Trobe University by day or evening, depending on when and where this game is played . Old Trinity visit Old Essendon for a potential final preview. Leaders Old Essendon won by seven points in Round 1 and will be confident at home . Trinity won we3i iast week to maintain third spot, but I wonder if th .: bolstered their side with A Reserve players? Ol d E~ , - : , are much more comfortable at home o n er ground and I select them to win as Ol d 'er wider spaces to exploit their speed . =ausi St Leo's travel North West again to pla y N, h Jr ', Boys; St Patrick's, w ho lost in Round 1 b y en points .
