Having the oppo rt unity to write the editorial for the Amateur Footballer this weekend gives me the opportunity to do a something of update about the VAFA in 2006 . As I go about my day to day activities, I am asked constantly "how are the Amateurs going? " I almost invariably reply that, in my opinion, the VAFA continues to go from strength to strength . This is shown not only by the standard of football through all the grades - as good, if not better than it has ever been . It is also shown by the fact that our Under 19 competition grows stronger and more popular, and by the fact that our Club XVIiI is the envy of other leagues, in that it provides the opportunity to many "part time" footballers to continue to pasticipate . In 2006, we have seen clubs which have been promoted making the most of their opportunities in higher grades, and in recent weeks, we have also seen clubs at the lower end of the ladder recording good wins to give themselves the chance to avoid relegation . Undoubtedly, we have to develop to remain strong, but it seems to me that our principal task is to maintain the attributes that the VAFA presently has - providing excellent football at all levels for all who want to play, in an atmosphere that encourages participation both on and off the field, and providing the opportunity for all players to fulfill their potential as footballers . We complete this year's representatiye football this weekend with our Under 23 game against South Australia . While the results in 2006 have not been as good as we might have hoped, the strength of representative football continues to grow . The WAAFL Under 23 team defeated us quite soundly in June, and although that result, if taken in isolation, is somewhat disappointing - we play to win - that is a much better result than the extremely one sided result that occurred some years ago at Subiaco when WA failed ._ score a goal (and which led to the development of the Under 23 competition), and which in turn led to t , opportunity for an All-Australian side to tour Ireland at t' e end of 2005 - another venture that the Australian Amateur Football Council intends to continue . Similarly, the fact that our Under 19 side was beaten by an AFLO Under 21 side in !trought breaking conditions in Brisbane was, in some

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005

ways, secondary to the fact that we now have the opportunity to establish an ongoing relationship with the AFLQ, and to provid e our Under 19 players wit h strong representative football each year . Our only success was in the game against the Southern Football League, under master coach George Voyage, and then we only just scraped in . We are committed to continuing representative football, as it provides our players, and in particular our Under 19 and Under 23 players with the opportunity to play at the highest level possible with in the Amateurs, to showcase their talents and to go back to their clubs as better players . Enough of the boasting about the VAFA - but then again, why shouldn't we? Good luck to all our C-D4 clubs who are playing today, in games that will almost invariably impact on final or relegation (or in many instances, both - the beauty of the system), and good luck to each of the teams and the players playing for their state at Sportscover Arena . May the better side win, although it is clear that football, and i i ' u ir amateur football, will be the winner .

A training camp at Jan Juc last weekend has ma c players strong in their resolve to play for each other and their state . Injuries to some key players have forced a changes to the side, lessons will have been le some height and marking power is sure : a side that will be keen to turn the small v tag they are now wearing back into a Big V .

; some pride in themselves and the competition . ; Make no mistake however, the Bob Cross led SA will not make things easy for the home side . Considering they are young and still c doping and don't have the same physical size as . ieir' counterparts, they will be encouraging their player run and use their skills, vi,iich should mean a free running open style of to 3-1 from both sides well suited to the vast .nses of Sportscover Arena.

This coupled with the hnme ground advantage in front of their family and fri r sees me tip them to just pip visitors who nonetheless their young Sou ' will take the game ri_'it to heir hosts . Enjoy your day.

-Ar

Ordinarily it's the premiership quarter which sees winning sides making their moves . However on the weekend, it seemed most waited until the final change to click into gear. Is this a case of midseason fitness fading for some sides? All and sundry agreed that Parkdale were too good for The OC on the day. After winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the 1st quarter the Wellers lead by 12 points at the first break. From then on it was all Parkdale as they won the following 3 terms by 5, 4 and 8 goals respectively. For Old Camberwell, Mark Jury and Steve Harrison were hard workers all day, whilst Ben Craven was switched from the backline to provide a focal point with 3 goals . The Vultures feasted in the final ter m North Old Boys/St Pats College belted out the song and drank the bar dry after a crucial win at Gillon Oval . It was a hard fought victory which was built on the back for 4 goals from Brandt Fleming and the continued form of Glenn Maxton and their two Had Team of the Year boys in Heath Maplestone and Scott Sleep . After several good reserves performances, Lachlan Batt shone in his return to the Rovers senior side, and was ably assisted by Sam Parkinson and Gerrard Woods. A huge crowd flocked to Tgedand to watch STBMT put Old Paradians to the sword, Brenton Schwarze debuted for the home side (supported by his AFL-playing brothers in Troy and Ben), and his team-mates didn't disappoint, racking up a 116 point win . Midway through the second term, Parade were only a goal adrift, but sparked into action when Luke Wintle left the ground and went on a rampage thereafter. Anthony Scafidi put in a stellar performance with 37 touches, shaded only for BOG honour by Paul Wintle who ruck-roved tirelessly all day. On a dark day for the visitors, Brett Dintinosante justified his return to the seniors with 3 goals, and Adam Curran put in another outstanding performance . Monash are well and truly in their mid-season slump after Ash Russell's 8 goals for Ormond sent them packing by 40 points . The Menders again started brilliantly with Mick Miller and Simon Kelleher dominating . In the second and third terms, Monash chipped away to within striking distance, thanks again to Aaron Williams in the ruck, Michael Davidson off half-back and The Freak', switching into the middle to generate a bit of run, finishing with 4 goals for the game . Still, once they were threatened, Ormond settled and kicked away to assert their superiority. Outrageous scenes at Brunswick Street where AJAX refused to give in when all seemed lost and pinched a miraculous victory from the jaws of defeat (I've been waiting all season to throw that one in) . With 3 players off for the game in the first quarter, another off to hospital, and looking atfielding 16 fit players for the second had, the Jackas seemed out of calculations . The Reds had a slight breeze advantage going into the last and, only trailing by 4 points, were primed to finish off the better. With minutes remaining, Damien Ritchie had bagged 3 and Tim Davis was back to his best as the Reds surged to a 22 point lead. Then it all went pear-shaped .. .. .. . From out of nowhere, AJAX turned the tables and took total control . Jason Israelshon and Elliot Janover proceeded to launch attac k 14

after attack and, whilst Aaron Bloom's ne i boots were proving troublesome, Anthony Rosen snapped a miracle goal but the proverbial dagger through the Redders heart was delivered by debutant Warren Sevel . In a Boys Own Annual display, Sevel marked strongly and calmly slotted a Stephen Kemahanesque mongrel from 30 m out to snatch the lead, and the allimportant 4 points. Ouch!!! ! Tips It'll be a desperate Rovers unit hosting a Monash side which is slipping out of calculations. Can the Students arrest their (negative) development? Methinks not - Hampton Rovers by 21 points . Parade will need to bolster their ranks with some inclusions if they're to knock off the ever-improving NOBSPC . If they can't pull this one off, they'll be 2 games and % adrift . Massive stakes here, and I think the ghosts of Garvey will howl as Parade win a nailbiter by 5 points. Parkdale on the up, Reds on the down, but smarting from last week's shattering loss . Can the Reds steady? I think they prefer the white shorts and should salute over the Vultures by 2 goals . Ormond should have the midfield advantage and superiorfirepower to overcome the OC at the GBO by 25 points . Finally, the Match of the Season (thus far) looms large on Sunday as an MAX unit, which is continuing to overcome injuries and silence the doubters, faces their biggest test against the Tigers . The Top Two, at HQ, is bound to be watched by a massive home crowd . Will it be enough??? . .. .. . Nah, they'll be game, but the Tigers will show everyone in C section just how good they really are, and finish up 34 point winners . IV ;oos Rovers, NOBSPC, Wellers, Fitzroy and STBM T

M Dnash Blues congratu? "zilTin' '-ron'ii :Ogames today in the turquoise and silver . Tinx is a terrific ball player who loves it when the going is at its toughest and he can burrow in and create havoc . Well done Tinx on thi> great achievement and may you grace the Frearson Oval i many more games. Congratulations to Paul le on his 100th Senior game for Si Bedes/M entOne Tiyc, : last Saturday. Rat's return to the Tigers coincided with the improved Tiger fortunes in 2006 . The Tigers' 2004 Club Best & Fair( t winner, Rafs ability and courageous style has endeared him to his fans at Mentone. Joining him this Sunday for their Senior games are Rat's little brother ifliDhaelt__ .,' . : and ___ :'Head' K insella. Mouse, like a 'frangipani in the sun' has earnt a number of VAFA Representative jumpers, as well as the Tigers Best and Fairest Award in 2002 & 2005 . Kinna's journey towards 100 senior games with the Tigers has been longer but just as eventful . Head played with the Tigers from 1992-1998 when his journey left Brindisi Street for interstate, overseas and higher VAFA grades before returning in 2006 . A quiet, unassuming type on field and off, Kinna's experience and leadership qualities have shone through as he strives to drive the Tigers forward this season . Well done to all three terrific 100 game players from all the supporters at Brindisi Street. Chris Hosking and Sam Butcher played their 100th games last week for NUBSPC against Hampton Rovers. Hosk arrived in 2001 from Stawell, establishing his spot in the seniors and becoming known as the best full back in B-grade (some said the VAFA) . Since moving to CHB, he has controlled games with his marking and set ups. Not content as one of the competition's best defenders, Hosk tried up forward last year, and dominated . "If only we had a Hosk at each end" was a common cry . Now in his fourth year as VC, Hosk has had another stellar season, as acknowledged by State selectors . He has been one of our best this decade and is also one of the most popular blokes at the club . Well done to the Kildare Kid . Sam Butcher also arrived in 2001 (via Newman College), becoming a vital team member during the famous Juggernaught era . His dodging and weaving runs through the midfield were a joy to watch, and he quickly became the coaches pet of Herald Sun journalist Mark Robinson, Robbo was so moved my his midfield maestro that when asked who his favourite player was he whispered in his husky voice, 'definitely Butch" . Sam broke through to become a regular senior player as a tagger, and whilst unpopular with some high profile B & C grade midfielders, he has been invaluable for the team . Sam's work off field is something to behold, as the driving force behind the new improved COBs website. Congrats on the century, Sam .

Salesian have emerged as a contender for the premiership this season . Peninsula remains out in front and still the one to beat though . Down the other end of the table, wins to Glen Eire and St John's have helped both clubs, whilst La Trade have been dragged into be relegation battle . This week's games are : A quinas DC $ 1 .33 v St _ . . .Three losses in a row for . .4uinas, including last Saturday's 64 point loss to Salesian makes today's home match against St John's extra important. knows that does not equate to getting the four points . Oakleigh did enough to knock off Williamstown at home, but will need to play better today in what looms as a danger match for the Krushers, Peter Holden continued his good form against Willy, and he will appreciate the large surrounds of the La Trobe ground . I have a suspicion that La Trobe will be ready 'for this match . Ludeman is due for a big match and I think La Trobe can cause an upset, especially if Bromley and McKenzie's influence can be limited . La Trobe by 8 points . Peninsula OB $1,33 v Werribee AFC $3 .1 0 Peninsula senior coach Mark Glenn's masterstroke move of star forward Shaun Payze to full back in the second half last Saturday worked wonders, but I think he might be back and roaming around the forward line today. Peninsula made hard work of ivanhoe Assumption for three quarters before a dominant nine goal to one last quarter gave them an easy win . James Coghlan played well in the boggy conditions as did Josh Davis and Eiv Bowen . Werribee had a heartbreaking loss against Glen Eire and will fancy their chances of an upset against the top side today, having already beaten them earlier in the year. Not sure where Dean Whitten was last Saturday, but if Werribee are a chance, they will need him playing as the Lee's cannot do it all themselves . The most interesting aspect of today for the boys from Werribee might be if they can make it back to the Racecourse Hotel in Werribee before the cover charge starts at 10 :00 pm . Peninsula to get revenge on Werribee and win by 38 points .

L co ;r. .; .om beh'iA" win to d, f, .veri~as its bit-,test win since their 1998 B Grade premiership . For the Eagles it was about as good as it gets ; playing at Xavs home ground and against the reigning premiers who were on another winning steak and at toD strength . For Marcelli n owne had been an excellent link man as well as a ruckman . Cox and Treganowan (6) were other major contributors to the great victory. Maybe the excellent win by :vJareeIlin's reserves against the previously undefeated Xavs line-up also provided inspiration? None were better than Gowers, Sassi and McCarthy (4) for the Xavs . Marcellin were certainly looking the "real deal" and now had a 6 point break over second placed St Bernards ÂŁ3C . Old Paradians congratulated Kevin (KJ) Jenkins on playing his 200th game against North Old Boys in B Section . KJ had commenced his career with OP's in 1990 at under nineteen level . KJ was a member of the OP's Jenkins `family of footballers' as father (Ted) was Club Secretary and brothers Adrian and Stephen had all been footballers at the club . In C Section, Glen Eira consolidated their position in the top four with a win over a persevering Prahran . They remained two games clear of fifth placed St Bedes Mentone Tigers but two sames behind the equal leaders . Collegians, Old Essendon and H ampton Rovers . Some undisciplined football by Glen Eira in the first half would not have pleased their senior coach . Paul Beddoe . The half time score . 8 .8 to 7 .8 in Glen Eira's favour was due mainly to an excellent first half by Richie Gilmore . one of the most consistent performers in this section . An overall 34

Best players - Cultrera (4), J Livingstone (7), Denavi . Phelan, Vankerkhoven, Tarulli (Aquinas) and Swinburnes' disappointment was confirmed with no one recommended for honors . Williamstown and La Trobe University were fighting for top spot in E Central Section . The Williamstown boys just managed to hold their one game advantage when thev managed to sneak to the front against Old Essendon in a real nail biter and win by the narrowest marein . 9 .9 to 9 .8 . Willy's crack forward . "Killer" Kurkowski was outstanding with 6 goals and was on top of the section's sharpshooters with 57 for the season . Lee and Weir were also great for the winners and Hexter, Hutchinson and Steven were Essendon's best . John Fisher, was also congratulated for his effort although he insisted that the result was a credit to every player and official that contributed . In B Section, cellar dwellers . Old Brighton, almost caused the upset of the round in heavy conditions against Uni Blacks at the University Oval . With the Grant brothers leading the way the Tonners grabbed a handy 2 goal lead at quarter time, increased it by a goal at half time before the Blacks were jolted into action to oet within 3 point at "orange time" . With a place in the four at stake, the Blacks restricted Brighton to 2 behinds in the last and bagged three goals to win 9 .9 to 7 .7 after a very tough game . Y i~i the rep game o n tr, :s week we have no : . and B Section games which allc,rs tha senior squad of umpires to filter down through the lower sections . This is a good opportunity for both clubs and umpires to get used to each other, if teams are looking at finals aspirations they can take the time to get to know each other, look for the way teams play a certain style, and teams, the way umpires allow the game to progress . All this will enhance future ( nes and avo confusion come finals . wife of umpire Gran t hen Grant spoke to his lovely wife ione about staying back after trainin g

A bit of nasty luck for Phil Callil running in a game with Max Wittman at Toorak Park last week . As the coin toss was about to take place on the ground, Max's son and his mate were mucking around with a grid-iron ball nearby . As one of the lads let fly with a place kick Phil just happened to turn around and from about a metre away copped one fair and square in th e . . . well you can guess, are your eyes watering? The Hawkies record a good win again :-~ an injury depleted Power House whilst Box Hill P!orth return to form with a thumping win over North Brunswick . A two game gap has opened up between 5th and 6th and whilst still plenty of games to be won, the likes of Syndal and Albert Park might have to win all 7 from here to make the finals ! Revie w

i thos e

rcue-stances . Gr, : return to form for BH N however bumping into Eitham at this point is not the preferre d option . Riscalla and Galvin are the eni! nes for these sides however the Turtles forward line is awesome and should get them the points .

With over 20 players unavailable, Power House were up against it as they met an in form and injury free Hawthorn . The House couldn't get into the game with S Avery doing the job on Edwards . Lauletta starred up forward for the Hawks with 7 whilst Hill and Hasler were the best for the House in a game they will quickly put behind them .

Power House travel to North Brunswick looking to make amends for a rare lapse last week . One ordinary day can be consigned to the waste bin, particularly when the form prior had been incredibly consistent . On the other hand, North served up their first shocker for the season as unavailability's hit the squad . It has been a season that has never quite kicked for the Brunswick boys and alas hard to see it happening this week, House for me .

Clinker of a game when Eltham travelled to Albert Park . The Turtles managed to hold sway for most of the day before a defiant Falcons outfit stole the lead late only for it to be snatched again by the Turtles! Great game! Blagrove led from the front with 5 goals whilst Galvin was again in great form . Ryan and McIndoe were the standouts for the Falcons .

Hawthorn host Syndal and will be trying to avoid the big match hangover from last week . The Hawks season has been building and with a low injury count, pressure at the selection table has been immense . Syndal have been pretty good all year without ever being able to get a big run on. . .a ks for mine .

Morale boosting win for Eley Park as they accounted for Richmond by 6 goals . The Sharks' form had dropped away in recent weeks however nothing like a good in to get the spirits firing . Broadbear and Creswell were the Sharks' stars best whilst Nuske continued his fine form with 6 goals for Richmond . Once again, the 13 goal tally was a positive for Richmond . Box Hill North recorded a big win over North Brunswick with the size of the defeat the main surprise . Marcakis starred for BHN who were also well served by the returning Penny who slotted 6 goals . The grand veteran Boudoloh was the best for North . Finally, Bulleen contined their march for the four as they accounted for Syndal Tally he . Good start for the Sinners however they were gradually overhauled by the home team . Classic 8 point game! Fradkin was great up forward with seven gaols whilst Kellett also starred for the victors . Bingham Was again amongst the best for Syndal . Pr e Match of the day sees Eltham host Box Hill North. A bit of a scare for the Turtles last week, however good side s 42

Bulleen host Eley Park in a game that a win will strengthen their spot in the four. The return of a couple of stars won't hurt their case either. Great to see the Sharks fire up for a win last week as the season was threatening to get out of control . Hard to make it two in a row form here though, Bulleen for mine . Finally, Albert Park host Richmond . The Falcons almost pulled of the unthinkable as they led late against Eltham . It is a long haul for them to make finals form here however it is certainly not out of the question. They will win this week .

ours wish to congratulate Luke Collii,a on his - Jth game for the club . A great servant on the field but also off field where he and his family have been fine contributors . Well done Lukas although please pass on the next Big Al award ! North Brunswick congratulates Jos] on reaching 50 games . Although from a rugby background, he has adapted his style of play to real football . As you would expect, his tackling is a feature of his game . Always trying to improve his skills, his dedication to training and playing is a shining light to all at Allard Park . His love for a goal is well known and no one celebrates one like Josh . Well done from everyone at North Brunswick .

extravagant event in itself, but it is also acting as a Curtain Raiser to the VAFA'S under 23 match against SAAFL . Therefore a large crowd should be present to watch the boys of FIDA and supporting competitions "Strut their stuff, " This game will be run much the same as other matches ; it is scheduled for 12pm on Saturday afternoon and should prove to be very exciting . I encourage all those interested in another side football to come down and cheer on the boys/ girls in what should be a great day of footy .

wig just. They held on by 4-points against u,, . MHSOB with Dylan Moore in everything and Skipper Damien Cerantonio leading from the front. SBMT took control of their game against La Trobe Uni kicking 8-goals to I in the second half after only leading by 3 points at half-time, with the Swayn boys featuring in the best players . Ajax held off a determined Emmaus for only their second victory, both against Emmaus, while Richard Keane's 8 goal haul saw Ormond defeat Bentleigh . Preview Only seven games to go and already the top four looks set in place . Ajax, after coming off only their second win, they may find Old Ivanhoe a tough task, especially with Old Ivanhoe coming off such a fantastic victory of the ladder leaders. The likes of Frost and Fridman should see Bentleigh take the points at home against MHSOB, while Ormond should have no trouble against Emmaus, despite Emmaus's Jeremy Chun and Simon Mills gallant performances the week before . SBMT now eyeball Oakleigh on the top of the ladder, with only percentage now separating the two, and this battle for top place should be intriguing over the final rounds . The SBniT juggernaught will roll on against Old Essendon this weekend as will a slightly wounded Oakleigh against La Troba, so for the time being they will remain where they are . UNDER 19 18M Review No upsets and large margins was the order of the day in Section Blue as the chasm between the top four and the rest grew ever larger, Mazenod ventured out to the lovely surrounds of Hampton and the game was over at the first break . Mazenod would have been determined to make a good start to the game following some poor starts of late and they came out like men possessed scoring 8 goals in the first quarter with some good running football . The well oiled machine that is Mazenod decided to call it a day with 28 goals to their name . They had 12 goal scorers led by Boger who kicked 8 and Klavins with 5, and in an excellent team effort they were ably led by Johnson, Stanley, and Smith . Old kientonians asserted their authority early in their game against Parkdale with some strong tackling and superior use of the footy through the corridor. Mitchell, Thompson and Fairbanks dominated across half back and shut the Vultures completely out of the game while Speers and Prowse were lively up forward despite being outnumbered. Old Mentonian on-bailers led by Campbell, Moon and Wilton continually put the ball forward as well as nullifying their opponents and this team effort saw them to 55 point win . Both De La and Old Haileyburians had easy wins over Oakleigh and Monash respectively . Preview Game of the round billing sees a top four clash between De La and Old Mentonians taking place at Darling Park . Only percentage separates the two teams in what should be a high-class affair, however, with the likes of Gill and Kovarik in top form and the fact that it is being played at De La, they should take the points in a close game . Old Haileyburians currently look invincible and with players like Criticos, Johnson, Dolman, and Wright backing up every week they are an extremely good unit. They always have an even spread of goal kickers and rarely rely on the one individual to win, a sure sign of a good team and Hampton will be their next victim this week . Mazenod will have little trouble with Oakleigh at home, while Powerhouse/South Mornington should give themselves every chance of beating Monash at home and I believe they will notch up their first win amidst chaotic scenes as they celebrate their first'non-bye'four points. Parkdate have a week off . Please send match info/social events to al_vafa@hotmail .com 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

19'"EDI Rupo get back on the winners list, as New sink lower at the home of the Ashes. The Woodsmen held the lead at every change, running out 19 point victors, Jared Pretty dabbed five for the winners, with Travis Smith receiving the 'Best On' honours. Kew's only shining light was Nathan Monaco, up forward kicking 7 . Aquinas hosted the Bullants, who are desperately trying to hold fourth spot . The lead was held by both sides at different stages, but Aquinians walked off smiling . Chris Williams kicked 2 in the low scoring affair . Dan Tonelli (3) and Rowan Matz were standouts for the Bullants . Ligris booted 6 more as the Reds bounced back from last week's loss, beating a very competitive Lions side within 8 points at the final break. Therry have been up and down all year, but should be happy to be sitting just outside the 4 on percentage . An inaccurate Westbourne took their 4th win of the season against the Old Saints in what could have been more than a 46 point belting, Anthony Whyte kicked 5 for the Westies, while Chris Ford booted a bag of 7 for the Old Saints . With 7 rounds to play, it's time for all sides to starting hitting their straps for that final straight. The Old Saints host a revived Rupo, but I think the home side will take home the goodies this week. A landslide as Aquinas belt New in an obliteration . The Reds host the Bullants who will be competitive but won't have enough come the last . The Reds by 17 points, where the forwards from either side will steal the show. Finally the Xavs host the Westies and I'm picking that it'll be a waste of costly petrol for Westbourne, with the Xavs taking control . 5 goals Therry put the feet up and sit on the couch . bernecich@netspace .net .au

With four rounds to play, the shape of the top four teams in each section is becoming clearer. It would seem there are three safely ensconced sides in Section 1 and Section 2 . In Section 3 the top two sides seem safe . My Round 11 success rate was 80% . Review Section 1 Old Xaverians built their lead over St Bede's IMentone Tigers by more each quarter, before winning by the Heinz margin . . .57 points . For the Xaverians, Sam Sheedy was active up forward . At half time, top side Prahran led defending premiers St Kevin's by 11 points . The second half saw Prahran assert superiority as they built their lead to 38 points by game's end . For Prahran, Dave Butterworth controlled the forward line, David Green was a good defender and Justin Geri was a creative on ball player . For St Kevin's good players included : "The Duck", a .k .a. Paul Hal . 'n, whose four last quarter goals lifted the spirit of his side as well as Ray. Short and Dominic Dunn . Old Scotch maintained fourth place through their 51 point victory over Old Xaverians 2 . Second placed De La Salle returned to the winning list with a 41 point win over Mazenod . Old Melburnians now lie fifth and could move higher following their 17 point win over the University Blues . Only inaccuracy prevented a bigger win by the O .M .s . Section 2 Whitefriars recorded a meritorious 30 point win over St Bernard's who slipped to sixth as a result . St Bernard's led narrowly at half time and at the final change the scores were level . Their greater desire for the ball saw Whitefriars edge ahead in the last quarter to take the points . For the winners : Clint. Collins, Sam . Ward and Peter O'Brien (5 goals) were best . Best for St Bernard's were : Gray, Catterall, Briganti and Yoshi . Mt Lilydale continued on their winning way with a 72 point victory over Collegians . University Blacks moved back into the four through their 52 point win over Old Brighton . Second placed Fitzroy Reds defeated last placed Marcellin by 69 points . Leaders Monash Blues continued on their high scoring and winning way with a 169 point win over Therry Penola .

Emmaus / St Leo's I remain in the final's race through their 13 point win over Old Scotch . Despite their inaccuracy, Old Trinity was able to inflict a 31 point defeat on North Old Boys/ St Patricks . Old Essendon set up their big victory over La Trobe University with six unanswered goals in the opening quarter. Dean Podger, the best afield with nine goals , kicked all six . Only in the third quarter did the Students quell the Section leaders as Old Essendon went away to win by 109 points . Other good players for the winners included : John Hughes, Hugh Lovell and John Knox . Straight kickir^ Beaumaris defeated th- inaccurate Old *Geelong by 55 points i, . Como Park .

56 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

Caulfield Grammarians, who lost to Fitzroy Reds by 33 points, can blame inaccuracy for much of their deficit .

Tr litional rivals De La Salle and Old Xaverians meet c, ; = .'averley Oval with the double chance as the spoils of victory . Although Old Xaverians don't seem to be enjoying the dominance of season's past , they easily accounted for Be la Salle in Round 3 . Today I select them to win again . Old Melburnians should continue on their winning way at the expense of St Bede's /Mentone Tigers, who will not have any extra players available to them . Leaders Prahran should defer Old Xaverians 2 . The Prahran stalwarts seem to he rle to find extra skill when under pressure and worth they have a sure avenue to goal . Fourth placed Old Scotch journey to play University Blues on the University Oval . The Blues, who won in Round 3 by 19 points have slipped since then whereas Old Scotch have improved . Today, I select Old Scotch to win . St Kevin's should again defeat Mazenod, who went down by 43 points in Round 3 . Section 2 Collegians should be strong enough to defeat Old Brighton on the Harry Trott Oval . Monash Blues should be able to defeat the enigmatic St Bernard's at the University . St Bernard's are my hoodoo side, when I select them they seem to fail . . . and win when I least expect them to be successful . Today they could field Reserve players to top up their flagging fortunes . Today Marcellin should win their first game for the season . They can field a full complement of players whereas it will be more of the same for their opponents, Therry Penola . Unless University Blacks field a lot of B Reserve players, I can't see them defeating Fitzroy Reds in the Club XV1 11 version of the "Rouge at Noire Cup" . The Reds do need the win to retain second place just as the Blacks need it to hold fourth . A titanic struggle should ensue but I favour the Reds to win . Way out east, a potential final will be staged when Mt Lilydale venture to the plains of Donvale to play Whitefriars, who will be strengthened by players from B Reserve . Mt Li!ydale, who have not lost since Round 4 must be due for a lapse (many leading teams fail around this time of the season!) Whitefriars need victory more to insure they can finish fourth . They are my selection .

Section 3 Old Essendon should win well at home against Old Geelong . North Old Boys/ St Patrick's should score a rare victory at home by defeating La Trobe University who won by two points in Round 3 . Of late North have displayed the better form . Old Trinity may take time to settle on the small ground against Old Scotch (either Camberwell or St James Park!) . however their greater depth of talent should see Trinity emerge victorious and so hold third place . The winner of the Caulfield Grammarians and Emmaus/ St Leo's game will hold fourth place tonight. Caulfield, despite inaccuracy triumphed in Round 4 by seventeen points . Caulfield may be stronger today but I still have concerns over their match fitness and kicking ability . That said, E .S .L. were none too impressive when I saw them go down to Fitzroy Reds in Round 4 . At home, I favour Caulfield Grammarians . Fitzroy Reds should be able to again defeat Beaumaris, whose form is hard to follow . Team M anagers Thanks to all who make the effort to contact me . It does make my task easier and does give pleasure to your players to see their names in print . Please contact me by telephone 9467 2857 or e mail nknugent@bigpond .com by 1 00 p .m . r;londay.

Teddy Out Offers to Pay for Tolling as Bi

: . Out at Last - great joy with the Bells recording their duck-br er against the Swingers in D3 leaving all of us hoping the mighty Stationmasters can snag one before season's end. As well the Drifters gave themselves a chance of survival in B with a narrow win over Clockers who are being pressed for finals action by the improving Clydesdales . A grade is hectic with even the Cork Poppers within 2 games of the four . In C, 9 teams are still in finals running but I'll stick with my original picks T*'t-ds, Framers, Philanthropists and Socialists . In Dl the sides ring themselves a sniff are Merry Oldes & Winos putting pressure on ' , s. D2, 3 and 4 have cut down to 5 teams with a chance of the In s . Relegatees at this stage will be Batmans, Chapels and I' ,rstandables

Getta proffered scribbled notes on a beer coaster as proof that the promise was made after a„..cns i-ic:.eon late last season . Molly laughed it offwhen this column asked the question this week saying he would serve as long as there was a party that wanted him to attend . Pammy refused to comment beyond saying --'she would email every club a cony of the beer coaster .

TV Favorites pr( 3i ries of Coolaroo Rover s Prisoner was named this week as one of the top 50 Australian TV shows . I recall Ross Stevenson (3AW) in his days as a dynamic HFF for the Reds casually asking the Coolaroo coach pre-match what he did to assist the rehabilitation of prisoners in his role as a social r orker . The coach replied he got them to play for Coolaroo . Ross was a late withdrawal that day with an inexplicable hamstring injury sus i_ d on his way to the amenities . The Reds were 4 short in total.
