SPORTSCOVE R VAFA MAJOR SPONSOR

by Nic'~ Bourke

In my final year of chairmanship at the VAFA, I am delighted to report that our competition is thriving like never before. With numbers at their highest peak and a long queue of teams from other competitions requesting entry, we are well placed to expand, should this suit our desired course going forward . Our U/19 competition boasting nearly 50 teams is the largest of its type in Australia and continues to be the lifeblood of the VAFA . With finals now upon us we are experiencing record crowds wh o are appreciating the high standard of football played in a family friendly atmosphere . Guided by our ever popular CEO, Michael Sholly, we have sought and won numerous new sponsorships which have assisted in ensuring our stable financial position . Whilst club affiliation fees are always a necessary evil to our clubs I know Michael is doing his best to ensure they are contained . When compared to other metropolitan competitions in Melbourne he is doing a fine job as our fees are less than most and offe r far more value . With finals now upon us we are seeing some exceptional performances . Last Sunday at Sportscover Arena I was privileged to watch one of the highest standard game s for many years . The 'A Grade' second semi final played in difficult conditions between Old Haileybury and Old Xaverians was a magnificent advertisement for amateu r football . Everybody at all levels can take pride in knowing they are a part of a competition that can produce such a high level of football . Old Haileybury's win puts them in the 'box seat' to win their first ever A Grade Premiership . Their performance under Tim Chegwin's presidency, Peter Nicholson's coaching and Paul Corrigan's on-field leadership has seen them stepup to a new level this year. The preliminary final between Old Xaverians and University Blues this weekend will no doubt produce another torrid affair played at blistering speed . Collegians rise back to A grade under coach Pat Hawkins, serves notice that they are a club whos e stocks are again rising . With experienced players and a club desperate for A Grade success, they will no doubt be replenishing their stocks over the summer break fo r a full on assault to not only stay in A Grade but to mak e Cover Photos : Clockwise L-R - Red/yeilowiblue stripe on navy : Steve Zakic (St Bedes Mentone Tigers) Red V on white : Paul Cheevers (Sth Melb . a big impact . Not unlike last year's promoted sides Old Ivanhoe and De La Salle who were both mixing it with the best of A Grade all year. Ajax's promotion to B grade is the perfect send off fo r coach Tim O'Shaughnessy and together with St Bedes/Mentone will no doubt provide a fast spirited game today at Trevor Baker Oval . With the return of key players from higher grades, Old Carey are starting to assert their authority as they ente r C grade with Rupertswood . Sunday's final at Central Reserve will see a standard of competition that belies a D Grade competition . Good to see a variety of teams from the D2 - D4 Grades making their way through these divisions no doubt with aspirations to one day sit alongside the 'big boys' in A & B. As I mentioned earlier on, U/19 competition continues t o thrive . Currently with 47 clubs, I was privileged to see our best in a representative game in OLD this year . Whilst the team went down to an U/21 competition I wa s nonetheless very impressed by the character and application of our future stars . The challenge for us as a competition and our clubs is to now ensure they stay o n in the VAFA and not be tempted by incentives from othe r leagues which constantly target our best young talent . Our future over the next period looks exciting . A refurbishment of Sportscover Area, an expande d competition, new initiatives and sponsors all driven by an enthusiastic Executive bodes well for the VAFA goin g forward .

Last Sunday's 2nd Semi v :as an absolute gem . A fantastic advertisement for Amateur Football (has an A Section game ever featured more heralded players?) A large (and definitely pro Haileybury) crowd . An engrossing battle between Stewart Loewe and Damien Lynch . Nicko going ape droppings at the umpires. Some good old fashioned ribbing from the crowd . Plenty of needle on the ground . Scott Mallard carrying on like a pork chop . A scintillating second half from Tim Ockleshaw, one of the best amateur footballers you will ever see . A 38 year old sailing enthusiast plying his trade at one end, a young rugby convert almost half his age up the other. Some less familiar names such as Mohammed, Hackett, McLaughlan and Santalucia bobbing up on the big stage . The canny Laz Siapantas getting the better of finals specialist Simon Lethlean . The Bloods fully deserved to win, no doubt about it . They got to the right spots, exploited their height dominance and weren't overawed . But Xavs still have a lot to work with ; Handley dropped some soriearly, Arnold was barely sighted, they missed some dollies in the third quarter and the score blew out a little in the final 5 minutes . If they tinker with things a little, they are obviously capable of reversing i .e result . What a Grand Final it would be . $ai

!

Not much to say about the 1st Semi at Sandringham really . Uni got a bit of a fright early, but always had things after control thereafter, despite some errant kicking for goal . Tom Rankin, Mark Paterson and Ben McConnell all impressed in the windy conditions . A typically slick display from the students, but the loss of prime midfielder Michael Kordick could prove crucial . And Scotch? Well, the Cardinals put in an absolute rotter. They can take heart from the fact that they led the field to the turn but they always looked well adrift of the Unis, Haileyburys and Xavs of this world . Cf9 m ie Goes W ith Histor y Last year's A Section Grand Final . Anyone remember

that little one? Quite an upset hey? If there was licensed betti n on VAFA football, I ~ would have been wiped out . A supe r quick, super skilled side was ground into the turf by a mob with nothing to lose and everything in the memory bank . So what's changed? Well, Xavs are down a key ruckman 4Purss) and some midfield grunt (Beetham) . Two time Premiership skipper Lachlan Ford also sat out the season after injuring his back at work . Their absence was palpable last Sunday. They have slotted in some very handy youngsters however. Handley at full forward, Santalucia around the packs and Hackett down back . Oh and Mark Graham has been a pretty handy acquisition as well . Uni, on the other hand, lost the freakish half-forward James Scambler, who returned to bush football and the enigmatic Rob Wilkie, whose whereabouts are unknown . They recruited very well over summer, gaining a bit of mongrel from NOBS and some stars from yesteryear, Andrew Henderson and DreImmon. Jo~ urrock has also slotted i n

nicely across half-back after missing almost three years with injury. Both these sides have had stellar years, both would run Haileybury all the way next week . I've analysed it, I've drawn up graphs, I haven't gone to work for a week, women just pass me by in disgust. And I still can't decide one way or the other. "When you can't decide . . . ." the 80s singer Climie Fisher once dittied, " . . . .go with the tide" . Wise words Climie old son, as you know, Old Xaverians have won 5 straight Preliminary finals since 1996. Red and Blacks by a goal . And Another Ding . . . Best of luck to Matt "Ding" O'Donnell and the De la reserves as they take on Scotch in the curtain raiser . Selection : De La by a point .

Congratulations to Wayne and Amanda Dyer, Ro d Nancarrow, Pat Hawkins and all the Collegians player s and officials on your win on Saturday and the promotio n back to A Grade that goes with it . A stellar year so far an d a well deserved result . Also to Matt Scholten, Steve Wright and all from the Fields commiserations for Sunday but with such a young list a great season anyway. The Tonners and the now not so beige Bombers live to fight another day . REVIEW SECOND SEMI FINAL This game was possibly over at the first break due to the Tonners inability to do some serious scoring with a force ten gale that was flowing across Sportscover Arena favouring the end to which Old Brighton were kicking . A serious clash between Richard Hosking and Matt Gadsden slowed things down for a while in the second as the ambulance took Richard away one felt maybe the entire Tonner forward line should go with him . After half time a miracle occurred, as Brighton came out and started to display the form that had them here in the first place, and for the first time placed the Collegians backline who had been solid all day under a bit of pressure, and all of a sudden just before orange time, the Tonners were 3 up and looking good . But a lapse in concentration allowed the Lions to kick a couple to be back within 7 points at the last change coming home with the wind . The last quarter saw the deficit turned into a pretty convincing 22 point victory as the Lions continued to attack and as the final siren sounded, with the wind abating they found themselves back in A Grade, leaving the Tonners to rue what may have been . Brock Mooney, Simon Arnott, Ryan Harkness and Clint Harris all did a great job for the Lions, as did Matt Roberson whose 5 goals in the conditions were a major factor in the game's result. For the Tonners, Patty Phelan led superbly, John Edge kept attacking from the back half, young Scotty Oliver played OK and Big Toby Ewart tried hard all day in the ruck FIRST SEMI FINA L Perhaps not the Beige Bombers anymore . . . .but the Backbone Bombers as OEG won the game, found a way to lose and then won anyway!! ! You cannot give a good side a head start in a final and expect to play over the top of them after playing catch up footy in difficult conditions . OEG had too much run an d 8

were given plenty of latitude early by the Fields as they dictated play, had a 6 goal buffer at the first break and it was still 5 at the long break . The third totally belonged to the Fields as they kicked 8 goals to 3 into the strong breeze to completely dominate the Bombers who became flat footed and looked like they were gawn . . . The margin had been whittled back to 13 points as both camps headed off to the final break . The momentum appeared to be with the Fields early in the last as they kicked the first three of the quarter to take the lead for the first time in the game . Some strategic player relocations by Darren Handley saw the Bombers regain their composure, settle and show some real character as the kicked 8 of the next 9 goals against the wind to storm home comfortable 30 point winners . Better players for OEG were Punter Ryan, Chris Goullett and Sneak Velardo, whilst Baddeley and Flaherty were the catalysts in the last quarter revival . Duncan Kellaway stood tall all day for the Fields as did Sammy Wood and Simon Widjaja, while Brett Sinclair with 5 twins was always dangerous .

PREVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL Well it all comes down to this, no beg pardons, no going back now to the winner its A Section to the loser it's another season down here with me . I'm sure I know which one both clubs would prefer. An intriguing battle ensues today in what hopefully are perfect conditions at Sportscover Arena . Old Brighton have had the wood on OEG over the past couple of seasons and this is sure to instil some confidence into them today, while the Bombers who don't always play at their best at EP are also full of confidence after their morale boosting win last week and now have a genuine belief in themselves . I have been on the Tonners band wagon all season but am perhaps wavering a little bit at the moment as I feel that they could be a bit worried about the height advantage that OEG have over them with all the tails in now and in good nick . The small running players of both sides balance out so it may come down to the height and ability of Velardo, Flaherty, Hakim, Forrest, and Playfair along with Clifton and Baddeley if needed to stretch the smaller Brighton defence that may just be enough to get the score on the board and propel the Grammar to A for the first time in their history. PRESS CORRESPONDENTS A special thanks to Scott Williams from the Fields for your detailed reports through the year, it is much appreciated . To Andy, Chris, and Smooth please keep yours coming through the finals . Any nominations you have for B Section Team of the year would also be most appreciated . As usual I need your assistance to write this column . A brief match report including players worthy of mention by 8pm Monday Nights please . Adapted from an original newspaper article written by Phil Gould, NSW State of Origin Coach, and former NRL Premiership Coach with Canterbury in 1988 . It comes down to one game . That game will come down to one minute and that one minute will probably come down to one play . When the game is over, the experts will look for that moment - the defining moment that changed the game or confirmed just who was going to win . No one knows before the game when that moment will be . If we knew that, players could just wait around and make sure that they were at their best for when that time approached . That's the beauty of sport . No one knows when it's going to happen and no one knows when that telling play will occur . It could be a strong tackle, a clever hand pass, a storming run through the lines, a missed opportunity to dive on a loose ball, or a failed effort to chase down an opponent who goes on to score the long goal . It could be someone who chased a loose ball that appeared to be rolling toward the boundary line when everyone around thought it was going to run out of bounds . It's the player who sees an opportunity rather than a problem . When the game is over, see if you can identify that moment that led to the final result-the play or action or effort that typified why one team won and the other was left shedding the tears . So the battle begins . The battle to treat every minute, every contest for the full 120 minutes,

as though the play that will decide the contest . That's not easy . It's a physical effort and its mental toughness . You may start the game with the intention to push yourself to the limit but after a time, your brain will begin to play tricks on you . You know that little voice in the back of your head that tells you it's OK to break your diet and have that piece of cake . Footballers hear that voice during times of injury or fatigue . That little voice says "It's OK, walk for a while . No one will notice" . Or perhaps, "Stay down and have a rest and get that injury checked . The team won't miss you ." The little voice might tell a player to not dive for the ball because he might get hurt . It might talk him out of tackling the big bloke for fear of copping a knock to the head . When he is tired, the little voice will convince him that there is no danger and that he can afford to fall behind . The winner will have another voice that drowns out the bad little voice . The winner's voice will say things like, "Keep tackling, keep running or go now." The winner's voice keeps yelling out the answer to the important questions ; "Who has the ball? Where is the ball? What is my job ? " They live in the moment . They play in the moment . They are not concerned with things they can not control and they only concern themselves with what they have to do right now . The strength of the mind determines the strength of the body. Your body is an idiot . It will do anything you tell it to do . It's just a matter of which little voice it listens to .

Think back to November 2005 . . . ..what ,~ =re you doi : ;? Working on getting the kink out of your golf s'ng? Perhaps planning a little dash up the coast for some R&R? For a few hundred talented C section footballers, one would hope they were in the early throes of a pre-preseason which would act them to this day - that one day in September . Any 88 lucky ones have made it!! ! Two weeks ago there were a couple of upsets, but regular transmission resumed in the Preliminary Final such that there can be little doubting the best two sides in C section will play off today for the H J Stewart Cup . This will be a massive day for all players, officials, supporters of the teams who take to Sandringham Oval in what we hope will be bright sunshine . Best of luck to all involved, and may the best teams win . Preliminary Final Review For a brief moment, we flirted with the unthinkable - a Vultures' upset over a side which had disposed of them very comfortably in the regular season . Had the weight of expectation finally forced the Tigers' into questioning themselves? Could they recover from the shock of last week to get back on track and book a seat on the B-train in 2007? Well if there was any doubt, (oh ye of little faith) it was swiftly cast aside in the first term on Saturday . St Beaes Mentone dominated possession and scored some very important goals into the tricky breeze to set the match up for an early kill . The Tigers' ball use was probably a shade below the previous week, but their opponents simply couldn't match their run and intensity around the contests . The floodgates well and truly opened in the second term as a 28 point lead ballooned out to 50 points . Sam Hecker had actually struck first for Parkdale with a couple of quick goals to draw his side closer, but then the Tigers hit their straps and surged away . During this term the dominance of Michael Wintle, Tim McColl and Matt Hilton around the packs ensured the Tigers could run and share the ball before taking aim at the big sticks . Gun youngster Brett Collins kicked 4 goals off his wing, whilst Hilton and Jess Windebank (up after a BOG in the McGoos last week) managed 3 apiece . Steve Zakic did the job down back, as Shane Rowley was kept goal-less and Paul and Michael Sullivan were closely guarded . The veterans in John Tully and Macca certainly tried hard throughout the day, but the fact is, they were outclassed as a unit and have done a magnificent job to make the last three anyhow. Grand Final Previe w With no AFL matches scheduled and fine weather forecast, I 14

reckon San will be jam packed tod~ as St B'es Mentone Tigers seek retribution against the fresh and fiery AJAX lads . Anyone who witnesse d the second semi-final sho~,Jo : :n :vill tell ;uu : ; .,as a fantastic match, and we can only hope that today's is of a similar standard and intensity. I expect the Tigers will come out early and seek to assert some physical authority on the contest from the first bounce . Luke Beveridge will have Sam Anstey in the thick of things from the outset, and hopefully he will go foe-to-toe with Jason Rittermann, who has a close affinity to Sandy and will relish another chance to run amok on his former home deck . 1 really can't see too many tags being applied here as the best two midfields face-off . At the Jackas' goal mouth . it will be Bloom, Rappaport and hopefully Ant Rosen lurking around to provide a tough match-up for the Tigers' defence . I'd expect Kinsella or Wintle to take Bloom with Zakic on Rappa, leaving the slippery Rosen as the quandary for the Tigers . At the other end, Nick Gold and Jason Israelshon will provide plenty of run and may slide up to awing if Tyquin or Collins need a bit of company . There are so many s~ I atir- match-ups al l

PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW In blustery conditions at Preston City Oval, Old Geelong took on Rupertswood for the right to play Old Carey in the D1 Grand Final, and gain promotion to C Section in the process . `3upo had achieved a couple of monumental wins in a row, and there was much interest as to whether this run could continue . Conversely, the Oggers were well defeated by Old Carey after a good first quarter. Could they maintain the form of last week's opening term over a full four quarters? Rupo kicked with the wind in the opening term, going to the Cramer Street end (does that make the other goals the, er, Bell end?) . 'Twas a strong breeze, but it was blowing into the pocket towards the railway station, making things difficult for the Sunbury men in front of the sticks. Old Geelong, probably due to having to carry the ball into the wind, were more controlled and efficient with their goal scoring opportunities . At quarter time, Old Geelong led by two points, fulfilling expectations (well mine anyway) of a close contest . These pretensions were laid to rest in the second quarter, with Rupertswood kicking five of the six goals scored in this term . Matt Quigley, Tim Boxall and Shane Bishop in particular were influential, while skipper Dave Collins was in control down back . This domination saw Rupo go into the main break with a 22 point lead . This pattern of play continued in the third term, with Rupo again outscoring their opponents five goals to one. Quigley and Boxall were again wreaking havoc as Rupertswood extended their lead to 45 points at the last change . Old Geelong started to re-establish some parity in the final term, but were repeatedly getting caught out with excess handball, either turning over the ball due to poor disposal or getting caught in possession . The Hoops did, however, score the first three goals of the last quarter, but left their run too late, before that man Quigley scored the last two goals of the match, to finish with a personal tally of seven for the day, and give Rupertswood a final winning margin of 37 points. In the reserves, Old Mentonians scored a handsome victory over Old Carey, their defence being the foundation of this win, keeping the Cs to just three goals for the day. Ben Lane at centre half forward, ruckman Matthew Elliott and centre half back Michael Lawes stood out for Old Mentonians, while Tony Bournon was dangerous with seven goals . GRAND FINAL PREVIEW D1 finals action returns to Preston City Oval, which sees minor premiers Old Carey face off against upstarts Rupertswood . Old Carey comfortably won their second semi final a fortnight ago against Old Geelong, while Rupo have staved off elimination two weeks running by chalking up consecutive victories against Yarra Valley Old Boys and Old Geelong . 20

Old Carey have been the 1 yardstick pretty much all season, even for those periods when they weren' t on top of the ladder . The quality of players such as Al Parton, Stephen Collins and Andrew Kent is testament to that fact. Not all three will be available today, but the Panthers definitely have plenty of talent in reserve . Rupo have also come through in the crunch, and continue their rapid rise up the VAFA ranks. However, only one premiership cup has made its way to Sunbury thus far, something they would dearly love to rectify. Players like David Collins, Tom West and Leigh Brennan to name a few, confirm the ability of player available to Rupo. Conditions permitting, I expect today to be a free flowing contest, with plenty of drive from the midfield for both teams, and both defences capable of good rebound footy. Therefore, I feel today that the key to getting majors onto the scoreboard will be converting set shot opportunities, and the key forwards in particular being able to get on the end of their midfield's passes into their attacking zone . Look for Trav Bull (Old Carey) and Simon Sweeney (Rupertswood) to be prominent for their respective sides in this regard . Of course, I can pick only one team, and after weighing up all the factors, I choose Old Carey to win by 22 points (of course, I've

gone against Rupo the last three weeks, and they've defied me each time, so you never know. .. . .. ..) . In the reserves, Old Geelong are up against Old Mentonians . Old Geelong have been a dominant force in the reserves this season, and further emphasised this strength by powering straight through to the Grand Final . Old Mentonians have had two cutthroat finals in a row, so will be battle hardened, if not battle weary. Sheer weight of numbers would suggest an Old Geelong victory. So, Old Geelong to win by 30 points . Good luck to all teams involved today (and the umpires also!), and may the best side(s) win .

Old Mentonians congratulate Chris Dwyer on 250 games in today's Grand Final . "Wombat" is one of the club greats, having played outstanding football at U/19s, reserve and senior level . A former Reserves captain, his leadership skills have also been extended to the club committ ee . Six Reserves Best and Fairests also show how highly his contributions have been regarded . Congratulations 'Bat, and remember, only another 150 to break the club record . In the main game, a couple of Old Carey players reach personal milestones . James "Jogga" White records his 50th game for the Panthers . After a sho rt spell at Richmond, Jogga has been a key component for Old Carey in recent seasons, using his high skill and elusiveness levels mainly up forward, where he has picked up a couple of goalkicking awards . Jogga is also one of the club's great character who loves a chat, and is also very adept at leading the club's post-match celebrations. Old Carey star Stephen Collins also notches up his 200th game of VAFA footy today. "Collo" sta rt ed in the U19s at Old Carey before moving onto Old Scotch, eventually returning to the Panthers at the sta rt of the 2006 season . Collo has won several VAFA representative guernseys, a senior club Best and Fairest award, an U19s section Best and Fairest, and was awarded with the 2006 L.S. Pepper Medal for D1 Section Best and Fairest earlier this month . Congratulations to both Jogga and Collo from eve ry one at Old Carey .

It was a tremendous game last Sunday, and Peninsula certainly bounced back from their disappointing loss to Oakleigh the previous week . It was extremely tight early, before the Pirates started to get on top during the second quarter. Three quick goals to Aquinas late in the third term, gave them a huge chance going into the last but the Pirates prevailed . Greg Evans did a great job on Shaun Payze, whilst Leigh Toomey and Glen Whitehead found plenty of the ball . For Peninsula, Tom Coghlan had an excellent match, along with Cade Bannister and Andrew Murphy . Oakleigh AFC $1 .72 v Pe M ost Goal s S. Payze (Peninsula) $2 .75 T. Bromley (Oakleigh) $4 .75 D . However, Peninsula will be confident that they can turn the tables today . I expect Simon Bando to once again get the job on Shaun Payze . Payze has been kept relatively quite in the past two weeks, and if he has a big game today then the Pirates are a huge chance. Mark Glenn may be a wildcard for Peninsula . He has been in reasonable form the past few weeks and if he can get amongst the goals this will take some pressure off Payze and the Coghlan's . I can't see Payze kicking a bag though . So their score will need to come from another avenue. Possibly it will come from Glenn . The Pirates need a big game from him, plus Sam Murray and Timmy Madder. However, the way the Krushers played in the second semi, it's hard to see how they can lose today. If Rutter, Bromley and Harold can win the ball in the midfield and get it down quickly to McKenzie, Briggs and co ., then it's lights out, Krushers win . One important player for Oakleigh is Peter Holden . I like the way this bloke goes about his footy. N o 26

frills, wears long sleeves, runs hard at the ball . A genuine old fashioned back pocket plumber. Th edrivhposut f defence is excellent, and he teams well with Bando on the last line of defence . Holden will give you another good game today . The gamebreakers for the Krushers have to be Bromley, David Counihan and McKenzie . Now Doug McKenzie has kicked 60 goals so far this season, but only managed one major in the second semi final . Will today be his day? Can he turn it on? The Krushers will certainly hope so . Well, who is going to win ? On initial inspection, everything points to an Oakleigh victory . They outclassed Peninsula in the second semi and have had the week off to rest some tired bodies. Yet, the Pirates have only lost three times this season, and rest assured they will be more competitive today than they were two weeks ago . As is the case in all football, whichever team wins the ball out of the middle will win the match . I think Oakleigh have an edge in this depart ment . Rutter and Counihan were too quick for Peninsula last time they met and I believe they will be once again today . The hundre d

Ressies Report Salesian AFC $1 .40 u La Trobe Uni $2 .7 0 Salesian have had the week off and go in as strong favourites today. Full credit to the boys from Bundoora though for their come from behind victory over Peninsula last Sunday . Heath Davies and Jarrad Clough were extremely good once again, but can they do it three weeks in a row to take the flag? I think not. Salesian have some good experienced players in Mick Forer and Matt Loughnan plus a bit of class with Shane Stevens and Paul Norman . I expect Salesian to prove a bit too strong . Salesian by 31 points . A big thanks to all the people who have sent me emails throughout the season . It certainly makes my column easier to write each week and the feedback is greatly appreciated .

STONE S The Peninsula -a, .: Football Club congratulates a pair of brothers on milestones this weekend . Tom Prendergast plays his 100th game for the Pirates this afternoon . TP first joined the club when he was playing for the Stingrays in 2001 and from his first game showed the pace and skills that have become his trade-mark . He was a member of the all conquering 2003 reserve premiership and the following season cemented his place in the seniors . He followed that up with a stellar 2005 season where he finished 6th in the B&F. His brother Luke Prendergast plays his 50th game today . His early playing days at the Pirates were curtailed by a litany of finger injuries but Luke quickly established himself as great clubman and is a current committee member. Thankfully the last few seasons have seen him able to play and this season he is one of our most improved players who has made the fullback position his own .

速 GeG,_

速 Grand F inal Action This Wee ken d It's Grand Final weekend in the VAFA for all sections apart from A and B Section, who play their Grand Finals next weekend . With the job of securing promotion to the next section completed, clubs have been focusing hard on achieving the ultimate prize for their division, a premiership . Whilst it is a fantastic effort to achieve a Grand Final, special mention must go to Rupertswood who are playing in the D1 Section decider on Saturday. Rupertswood lost last year's decider by 21 points in D2 to Old Geelong, but extracted revenge for that loss last Saturday with a 37 point victory and promotion to C section in 2007 . They face a huge challenge to overcome hot favourite Old Carey, but Grand Finals are a different ball game and favouritism quite often counts for little . Other highlights this weekend include the first ever night Grand Final (outside of Club XVIII) in the history of the VAFA on Friday Night, when Mazenod meet Old Mentonians in U19 (Blue) . The match will kick off at 7pm at Sportscover Arena and with fine weather predicted a big crowd is expected . A massive crowd is also expected at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday when Ajax meets St Bedes/Mentone Tigers . These two clubs have a huge following (particularly Ajax) and this weekends match could see Trevor Barker Oval packed to the rafters . Should be a cracker of a match too so if you are thinking of going a fantastic day's entertainment awaits .

- Different Ball Gam e It's an old cliche, but finals football is a different ball game . As seen over the first two weeks of finals, going through the season undefeated counts for little (apart from securing a double chance) once finals comes along . St Bedes / Mentone Tigers found themselves in the C Section Preliminary Final after losing their first game of the season against Ajax in the 2nd Semi-Final . A very nervous Luke Beveridge led his side to a comfortable victory over Parkdale Vultures to secure passage to B section and a chance to re-deem themselves in the Grand Final . Not so fortunate was Old Haileybury in the U19 (Blue) section . After going through the season undefeated, the OH boys went out in straight sets after their loss to Old Mentonians on Friday Night . The only team in the VAFA to remain undefeated is Old Geelong Reserves in D1, who meet Old Mentonians in the decider this Saturday.

速 No AFL in Town What better way to spend the weekend than at a VAFA Grand Final . With no AFL matches scheduled in Melbourne over the next two weekends, it's a chance for people to get out and see local footy at its best . It's great to see media outlets getting behind local footy this weekend, particularly the newspapers, Sport 927 and SEN Radio . Let's not forget though the great work of our community radio stations, who are there every weekend supporting our association (more on them later) .

In a first for the VAFA and I'm sure local footy in general, the VAFA A Section Grand Final will be jointly broadcast by three community radio stations, giving the game blanket coverage over suburban Melbourne. 96 .5 Inner FM, 88 .3 Southern FM and 98 .9 No rth West FM have joined forces to bring the best radio coverage to the people of Melbourne the VAFA A Section Grand Final has ever had . It's great to see three separate stations that all cover VAFA football coming together for the benefit of the VAFA community as a whole . So if your coming to the game, remember to bring along your portable radios to listen to the best local football callers in Melbourne (even Australia) and if you can't make it, make sure you tune in and don't miss a minute of the action .

Similar to West Coast - Sydney Swans rivalry that has developed over the last year, Old Xaverians v University Blues in A Section has become a neck and neck battle . A combined total of 19 points has separated the two teams over their last three meetings, including a 9 point victory to Old Xavs in last years Grand Final . This year the ledger is square with Old Xavs winning by 1 point in Round 1 and Uni Blues victorious by 9 points in Round 10 . Obviously if this trend continues, Sunday's Preliminary Final should come right down to the wire with another crack at September glory awaiting the victor . ® "Tiger" to t a ke o n M ° - ,:, VAFA Administration Officer Kate Balme this week tended her resignation to undertake her new role as Sport Administration Manager at Super Sprint Events . Her new role will i ncorporate the management of events such as the Gatorade and BRW Corporate Triathlon series and the Sussan Women's Fun Run . Kate departs the VAFA on October 6th and begins her new role immediately . The VAFA would like to sincerely thank Kate for her service and wish her the very best for the future and for her upcoming wedding .

® C ® mne ` :Jo n Hot for Umpire Ap p Being involved at football clubs all of my life, it was always interesting to see the competitiveness at this time of the year for those final few places in the team . Players on the fringe would be training their guts out to hopefully make the team that runs out on that one day in September. Now being involved in Administration, you get see a very similar thing, this time from the Umpires . With only two spots available for the big game, the umps are certainly out to impress their coaching staff with their attitude, training and game day performance . These guys want to umpire Grand Finals and the pressure on the selectors has never been greater, due to the talent and quality of the current umpiring stocks . Some are not only trying to impress on the training track though, Brian Goodman's message bank and email inbox has never seen so much traffic .

• "Tige r" to take on Triathlons VAFA Administration Officer Kate Balme this week tended her resignation to undertake her new role as Sport Administration Manager at Super Sprint Events . Her new role will incorporate the management of events such as the Gatorade and BRW Corporate Triathlon series and the Sussan Women's Fun Run . Kate departs the VAFA on October 6th and begins her new role immediately . The VAFA would like to sincerely thank Kate for her service and wish her the very best for the future and for her upcoming wedding .

®-in Hot for Umpire --- f s Being involved at football clubs all of my life, it was always interesting to see the competitiveness at thi s time of the year for those final few places in the team .

The A Section preliminary final between St :' ~_ evins and St Bernards was an enthralling game always destined to be a battle of wits between Mike McArthur-Allen (SKOBS), with a chance to enter another A Section Grand final and a tilt at his 6th A Section premiership and Garry Foulds,

ex Essendon 300 game player with an

opportunity to further his coaching credentials at the highest amateur level . St Bemards were very strong early and at quarter time held a good lead ; 20 points . By half time they had increased the lead to 5 goals and it looked like a St Bemards versus Marcell in Grand Final the following week . McArthur-Allen's clever use of his smaller players into the breeze paid dividends in the second half and by the final break St Bernards' lead had been reduced to 3 goals . McArthur-Allen again trumped the opposition in the final quarter as Ben Dollman dominated to take telling marks, kicked two goals and St

Congratulations to South Melbourne on winning promotion to D2 . It was a just-reward for being the league leader all season . Commiserations must however go to Elsternwick . Their season has been exceptional considering their promotion and they will undoubtedly be one of the D3 favorites in the 2007 season . Review South Melbourne delivered a strong message in their resounding win on the weekend against Elsternwick . . . they are not going to lie down after what has been a stellar season . Bentleigh beware ! Injuries to some key tails for the Wicks had them starting a little behind the eight ball, however, coach of the season Dennis Grace would have been pleased with how first year players Grant Cuishaw and Nathan Hodskiss filled the void with their run . To the Swan's credit, they did put the game beyond the Wicks at an early stage and never looked as though they would be headed . Cheevers again starred around the ground, and combined with Aquilina they made a class side like Elsternwick look second rate in a memorable victory. Meanwhile in the reserves, as predicted Monash proved far too strong for a gallant Old Westbourne to set up an intriguing Grand Final entree against Kew . Parker, Still and Hetherington combined with Vaughan Coffey in the backline and Wal Pocock up forward to ensure result was never really in doubt. Preview Grand Final - Bentleigh versus South Melbourn e It is a good thing when the two best performing teams for the year make the Grand Final and win promotion . Firstly, it is a just reward for all the hard work that has been put in by players, coaching and support staff, committees and supporters . Secondly, it means that the neutral spectators amongst us will have a riveting and tightly fought encounter on the field . Thirdly, given there is no AFL in Melbourne this weekend, it will mean a bumper crowd for what will be a great encounter and most importantly it will mean that whoever holds the cup aloft when the final siren sounds will know that they have well and truly earned the honor, and the celebrations afterward will be all the sweeter . With the week's break and the memory of their comprehensive Second Semi victory, Bentleigh will start today's match as firm favorites. However, many pundits are putting the Second Semi loss down as an aberration given the fact that the Swans have accounted for the Demons in their two prior meetings and had a number of issues on and off the field in the lead up . 36

Today's match will be a completely different story and to predict how it will pan out, I think that you must firstly consider th e midfields of both sides . South's onball brigade set up last week's stirring victory against the Wicks (as they have for most of the season) and if they are on song, Bentleigh will be hard pressed to counter the supply to the Swan forwards . However, Bentleigh have their own stars in the engine room and you can expect the Dimmatina brothers Paul and Frank to get plenty of the ball to their all-star forward line, lead by the D3 McKinnon Sharpshooter, Chris Sharp . Ultimately, the winner will be determined by who has the most run in their legs after what has been a very intense season . And in my opinion, it will be the Demons that close out the match with more in the tank considering the week's break, combined with the drive the team will get from their younger stars such as Frost, Fiddler, Stephens and Co . While I think South do have what it takes to win this match, I cannot go past my preseason prediction and as such will go with Bentleigh in a 9 point win .

A . Dwyer (St . M) Coach : Dennis Grace (Elst) Team of the Yea r Well after much deliberation, consultation and consideration, I have come up with my team of the year . In formulating it, there have been quite a few unlucky players to miss out. However, I have had to try and get a fair balance amongst all D3 sides, while also taking into consideration positions on the field as well as the plethora of nominations received from readers (for which I thank you all sincerely!!) . So without further ado, here it is (above) ; Grand Final - Monash Gryphons versus Ke w The clear standout sides in the Reserves this year meet again, this time it is for keeps . And what a game we have in store if the Second Semi is anything to go by, where a seesawing match saw Kew get over the line by under a kick . Today's match should be no different, however, Kew will certainly have the advantage of both the week's break and the recent victory fresh in their memory . Picking a winner is a tough ask, however, I get the feeling that today's match could be the stepping stone to something a lot bigger in 2007 for the Kew senior side, and as such I will stick with the Browns to take out the flag with a two goal win . Thank Yo u I extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed this season in making this column a bit more meaningful . In particular I would like to thank Dennis Grace, Matthew Healy, Angus Hamilton, Luke Holmesby, Ross Mitchell, Al Dwyer, Tony Boyce, David Hudson and all the lads on Big Footy.

MILESTONE S Monash Gryphons - Today's Grand Final in D3 Reserve also coincides with Gryphons CHF, Matt Parker's 50th game . Monash have benefited greatly from Matt's physical presence on field since he has come to the club to finish his career . We only wish we could've secured his services 10 years ago . Well done Matty, hopefully it will be a double celebration tonight !

Congratulations To all the umpires who achieved the games they were after this weekend we wish you well . Yes, there will be some disappointments, but just umpire the game to the best of your ability and come back to prove them wrong next year. To the promoted clubs - Collegians, AJAX, St . Bedes/Mentone Tigers, Old Carey Grammarians, Rupertswood, Oakleigh, Peninsula Old Boys, Bentleigh, South Melbourne Districts, Hawthorn Amateurs and Powerhouse ; all the best in the big one today and for 2007 . Finals Milestone for The Big Ma n A belated congratulations to big Kenny McNiece who umpired his 200th VAFA game last weekend . His milestone was achieved at the Ormond v Old Camberwell reserves preliminary final . Kenny joined the VAFA in 1998 after sho rt stints with the SFL and YVMDFL . He currently also umpires with the Yarra Juniors on a Sunday. A regular in C Section over the last three seasons, he has also been appointed to a few B section games . Very popular with the clubs in C section (especially the Vultures) . He cert ainly knows how to enjoy the social side of football, but his passion for umpiring and football itself is unquestionable . All of us here at the VAFAUA wish him well, and hope that there's plenty more kilometres in that tank . Hints for finals If you're appointed to a boundary umpiring position during finals and you usually umpire in the field, then it is important that you do not take your coloured cards with you during the game, as you are not allowed to use them . Secondly, if you are appointed to the field and your chances next week are slim to umpire, do not practise throwing the ball over your head to try for a boundary appointment, especially if it's for a centre bounce (twice done) . David Phillips we cannot imagine what you were thinking of. ~

Goalies hit the big sticks Former VAFA goal umpires Steven Piperno and Chri s Doyle have made the finals panel for the TAC Cup competition which began last week . A fantastic achievement in their first year on the VFL panel . From the Rat Pack Up and coming umpire Richard Yann, let fly with some interesting quotes from last week's B grade Semi Final game . Could it have something to do with where he has ended up, as both quotes had our leader mentioned, or more so, was it the fact his old school was beaten? . Not a good thing to do with Grand Finals here . "If we have to wear slacks, why does Benny wear jeans?" "It's all over now (halfway through the final quarter) and if the fat lady is not out there, then Benny should be ." Kiss Kis s Santo Caruso had the lucky experience of receiving an unexpected kiss during his game, which didn't happen during a break but as luck would have it just near the interchange so he could come off and go back on quickly. Weird things certainly happen in finals . VAFAUA Golf Da y Reminder!! Alan Stubbs has organised the VAFAIJA Inaugural Charity Golf Day, for Sunday 8th October at the Kingston Links Golf Course . Hit off at midday . Cost is $70 which includes : 18 holes of golf, Golf cart hire (because we'!l all be weary after a long footy season), canapes and finger food after play . Loads of prizes including nearest the pin, longest drive etc . Sponsored by : VAFAIJA, Negotiating with Drummond Golf and others . Strictly limited field so get an entry form from www.vafaua .asn .au and follow the links . Entries close September 27th . Proceeds to assist the Elise Sneddon Foundation .

(This week's report by Glenn Carle) It was obvious from the moment the crowds arrived a t W . S . Scammell reserve on Saturday that the team tha t mastered the elements would be progressing not onl y to the Grand Final, but into D3 . Congratulations to Powerhouse who have quickly returned to D3, but also congratulations to Eltham on a great season . Their early season form was exhilarating and I can't see it being long before they're having a crack at D3 themselves . Review Eltham had the advantage of kicking with the wind in the first quarter, and jumped out of the blocks with the first two goals to McLaren . But Powerhouse hit back and it was only the tricky breeze that stopped them from building a bigger lead as they struggled in front of goals . The second quarter was an arm wrestle with both defences under the pump, but holding strong . But the House were able to use the wind and skip ahead to a handy four goal lead, but they by no means thought they were home . The third quarter was do or die for the Turtles who needed to get their noses in front at the final change to have a chance . Runco and Thomas were providing drive off half back, but the footy was going in too often for them to repel it each time, and with the ever present danger of Edwards, percentages were always against them. Powerhouse by 30 points at three quarter time . It was going to take a Herculean effort from Eltham to get home, and against a primed and fit Powerhouse, it was always going to be too much . In the end, Powerhouse ran away with the game in the last quarter, in what was to be a disappointing end to a season that started so promisingly for the boys from the north . Preview So after 93 games of tough suburban footy, it all comes down to this Saturday, 2pm . All the stinking hot pre-season running, freezing cold training nights, wet and windy home and away matches and finals come down to about two and a quarter hours of man on man contests . And it could be decided by the battle of two men not even playing on each other: centurion goal kickers Lauletta and Edwards . But as any football pundit knows, it's no good having great goal kickers i f 42

you can't get the pill down to them . The engine rooms of both sides have been largely overshadowed by thei r spearheads, but I suspect the game will truly be won at the centre duels, with the forward that gets the most chances the likely victor. Aitken for the Hawks was runner up in the league B&F and would dearly love to go one better on Saturday . His Danny DeVito/Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins style combination with Dawson in the ruck has given Hawthorn first use of the football for much of the year, and the House will want to keep these two in check . But they have good men in the centre of their own who will ensure it's not so simple . Brady and Sosic have the ability to pull the game apart and the Hawks wouldn't be wanting them to have too much of the ball early on . And as a hackman (or forward denied opportunities) myself, it would be remiss of me to not highlight how the game could just as easily come down to a battle of defences . With the two key forwards trying to create space, look for plenty of loose men down back an d

Coach : Peter Armstrong (Box Hill North ) third men up in contests . P. Avery (H) and Boland (P) will most likely get the key roles, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the less heralded forwards who collects a sneaky bag of three or four that wins the game as the defences scramble to cover the big guns . Keep an eye out for Tyson (H) and Grahek (P) . And as always, for sheer entertainment value, always keep half an eye on Jackomos (H) . The two games during the year were split on home grounds . The Hawks haven't lost since May 20 and will be understandably disappointed if their next loss isn't until 2007 . But the House have showed that they know how to play the games that count . After round 18 it appeared they were gone for this year, but the Turtle's found out last week that is far from the case . Hawthorn deserve to take favouritism into the game, but this will be an absolute cracker . Hawks by 3 goals for mine . Magoos Powerhouse earned a second crack at Eltham in the Grand Final with a workmanlike effort against Hawthorn . Club president Richo was the catalyst all day getting plenty of the footy . But the House will have their work cut out against an Eltham side that has looked the goods all year. The Turtles to take some joy from the season in this one . Finally . .. Congratulations to all players who have scored a guernsey in the team of the year . The standard of football just keeps getting better every year, with the sides coming down into our league from D3 having a tough time getting back again, and those that get promoted going on to enhance the quality of the higher level . To these players, and everyone that stepped across that white line this year, congratulations, and all the best for the remainder of this year where applicable, and for the 2007 season . Michael comes from a football loving family with a long history of involvement with the Coldstream FC . Michael was appointed Senior Coach of Aquinas in 2006 after being Assistant Coach at Coldstream for the previous 2 years . Michael had played senior football at Coldstream for 7 years, including 3 Grand Final appearances and 1 win . A skilful left foot half-backer, Michael has bought a wealth of experience to the Aquinas line-up as well as developing strong relationships with the entire playing list, not just the seniors . Michael's contribution at all levels has been a big factor in all 3 teams at Aquinas reaching the finals for the first time in the clubs history . Michael has bee n reappointed for 2007 and we wish him continued success next season .

U1 Theo has had such a rich and varied sporting career that his coaching success at Old Xaverians Under 19's was nearly guaranteed . After completing school at Xavier, Theo went on and played with the Old Xaverians for three years . After suffering from injuries he decided to move to East Camberwell in the Suburban Churches Association where he played for the next eight years . In th e meantime he spent his summers playing cricket, firstly with Kew in the subbies where he played as a batsman in the First XI and then to Koonung Heights where he was selected in their Team of the Century . As a teacher at Burke Hall, Xavier's Junior School, Theo has coached thousands of boys in all sports . Theo's strength is his ability to relate to all people and his deep understanding of both school and club sport has made him a popular figure this season .

UNDER 19 (1 ) It's almost over. Glory awaits those willing to take the risk . Review Battle of the overwhelming favourite and the rising stars . Was always going to be a belter. Close all day, Xavs never really gave Bernard's a sniff, keeping their opponents at arms length all day. In the end it was a comfortable 57 point victory which makes for a cracker this Saturday . For the winners, Luke Kelly was mostly on fire with four big ones. Jack McNamara was also hard to stop nailing 4 and playing himself into some top form . Xavs were also extremely well served by Kieran Hogan, James Glen, Joel Cross, David Bell and Jon Mercuri - all of whom have staked a claim for premiership glory . Steven Morris bagged four for the loser and was adjudged his teams best . Best of the rest were Stephen Marchment and Thomas Caven who tried all day . Preview The Stage Central reserve is the place, 2pm the time. Destiny awaits both teams. The ground is a corker, and the forecast could not be better. Make an effort to see the big one . The VAFA will showcase just how strong the U19 competition is . The team s Minor premiers and my favourite Old Xavs take on the well rested De La . Why are Xavs favourites I hear you ask? I'm not sure . Actually - although they may not be rested, I feel the Xavs will be slightly hungrier, ready to take it all the way. The players The players who will just decide the winning team . The game breaker Gambreaker for me will be the class and power down forward for Xavs . Expect a close one , never more then two goals in it . Xavs should win by 14 points and take festivities off line for a big week of Mad Mondays . The Lock Lock of the week Freo to smash Melbourne . Happy punting ! UNDER 19 (2) Review Kicking 1-15 for the first 3 quarters last week, OM's squandered opportunities, due to constant pressure from a raging Wellers line up . The Melburnians ended up with 10 more scoring shots than their opponents, still going down by 20 points . Conversely, the Wellers ' Continued page 4 8

efficiency in front of the big sticks was second to none, with Hillier (4) and a best-on performance from Andrew Clarke (2) leading the way . Poynton (1), Jenkin and Shanks (2) were also solid contributors in a game where the losing side seemed to have most of the possession . Old hats Lawler, Playfair and Morrison tried for OM's . Carey vs Camberwell (1-1) Preston City Oval 17th September, 2p m Camberwell would have to be the best side going around, winning 8 of their last 9 . The Wellers also took the ham against the Panthers 3 weeks ago, but finals are a whole new ball-game . Camberwell have learned to play away and now with all guns firing, the juggernaut will be hard to stop . We've heard the names from Carey over and over, and with a week off they'll have the best ingredients to make a Premiership but their Semi-Final scare, suggests they do have holes that can be exploited . Marshall Bull and Caine Hillier need to be switched on as they are the keys to their respective side's success, in front of goal . In the middle Macready-Brown, Wagner and Elliot will fly the flag for Carey while Clarke, Romanin and Co . need first use for the Wellers to have a shot . I'm predicting Camberwell will jump to an early lead and if they kick straight and have a handy lead by half time they might be able to have successfully finished fourth and win the flag, a rarity . But at this point I have to say Butch's Panthers who will take the crown and the glory. bernecich@netspace .net.a u UNDER 19 (3) Review Oakleigh, finishing the season on top of the ladder, has been bundled out of the finals in straight sets by Ormond after a heartbreaking six point loss in the Preliminary Final . Ormond started well and held a 13 point lead at the first break but thanks to Oakleigh's Joshua Derks-Revere and Alex Pound-Gow they were able to take a 4 point lead into half time . Goals were hard to come by in the third term in a tight and hard fought contest, but the likes of Lack, Duthie and Ashton were providing plenty of scoring opportunities up forward for Ormond . Only four points again separated the two teams desperate to win a place in the Grand Final, with many believing Oakleigh should be too tough in the finish . Vicecaptain Luke Duthie with the help of Ben McCarthy and Sammuel Ashton put paid to Oakleigh with a devastating display of pressure football, with Ormond holding on to win by just six points . Grand Final Preview We are finally here! It is the big one and all the hard work will pay off for one team and only one as 48

they are crowned champion of Under 19 Section 3 . Starting at 11 .20AM at Central Reserve, the might of St . Bede's Mentone takes on the class of Ormond in what will be a fitting display of U19 football . We are in for a cracking affair as these two teams are in red hot form and their previous meetings this season have been decided by less than a combined total of 9 points . Ormond's Orry Lack will provide the biggest headaches for SBMT having kicked 41 goals in only 12 games this season, while SBMT will have leading spearhead Mitch Bodinnar with 83 goals up forward wreaking plenty of havoc . SBMT player Sam L'Huillier plays well against Ormond and loves a goal so he could be a trump player in the game . Ormond's Simon Te Hennepe has only played 11 games this season but the kid can play and will be dangerous as always . On the other hand, SBMT's game breaker is Section 3 B&F Robert Swayn, a player that rarely puts in a bad performance and one who will be looking to lead his team to premiership glory . This is a tough game to pick . SBMT have been the form side all year and have had the week off, while Ormond have .steam rolled all before them and are ready for this game . My tip in a word : SBMT . But not by many. Good luck to all ! All reports to al_vafaQhotmail .com by 5pm Monday.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

UNDER 19 BLUE Preliminary Final Revie w Old Haileyburian's have provided the biggest shock of all Under 19 sections, going through the season undefeated and installing themselves as the team to beat in the final series, only to bow out in straight sets . Friday night under lights in difficult conditions saw them take on Old Mentonians in the do-or-die clash and only one point separated the two teams at quarter time . Old Mentonians started to look dangerous up forward in the second quarter with the likes of Jesse Prowse and Brad Norton getting busy, and their increased intensity reflected on the scoreboard with Old Mentonians leading by a handy 14 points at the main break . Old Haileybury got the rev up they required and came out hard in the third with Nicholas Criticos and Brad Dolman in everything . Again only one point separated the two teams heading into the final term and it was now or never for both teams . In such a terrific game it was sad to have a loser, and unfortunately for Old Haileybury it was to be them . Old Mentonians held on for a fantastic four point win to head to the Grand Final with Kyle Goulding awesome for the winners and Dodd, Prowse and Norton all finishing with three goals apiece . Grand Final Previe w To play at Sportscover Arena at this time of year is often for the best teams in the VAFA and so we have the two best Section Blue teams fighting it out under lights on Friday night . After all we have been through we are down to two as Mazenod and Old Mentonians face off for premiership glory starting at 7 .00PM at the home of VAFA football . Many pundits including myself didn't think Old Mentonians would get this far after their start to the season, but they rocketed home at the business end and now seem ready to take on the might of Mazenod . Their early meeting this season saw Mazenod have a day out at home winning by 120 points with Klavins kicking 7 goals . But as the season wore on Old Mentonians just kept getting better and it showed in their return bout when they defeated Mazenod at Mentone Grammar by 6 points, with Dodd booting 4 goals and Prowse and Mitchell best afield . Both Jesse Prowse and Lewis Mitchell have been awesome all year for Old Mentonians, with Prowse finishing 5th in the league B&F. Their courageous skipper Jacob Moon also had a stellar season finishing 4th in the league B&F, with these two players forming the nucleus of the team . Mazenod also have plenty of skillful players including goal kicking machine Nicolas Boger who has booted 73 goals for the season, as well as great players including Peter Stanley, Cameron Smith and Adam Weekes . This game should be a great display of U19

football and with a fair turnout expected, it should be the team that settles best under pressure taking the glory. It would be a fairytale season for Old Mentonians if they took the Premiership cup after their first year in the competition, but Mazenod don't believe in fairytales and will be looking to bring them back to reality . In a tough game to pick, Mazenod and their week's rest should see them win in a thriller. All reports to al_vafa@hotmail .com by 5pm Monday . U19 (R ED ) Review For a team who have only lost 3 games, the Aquinians looked helpless against a Bullant side that were taking no prisoners . The only signs of life from Aquinas were tall Leigh Demunk, Toby Syme and Best & Fairest winner Paul Maaskant . The Bullants took control from the word go with Daniel Rametta running hard out of the middle, followed closely by Matz and Morabito . Aquinas forwards, Naulty and Raguaskas were well held as backs Steve Millar and Chance Burridge not only beat their opponents, but ran off and created . Two 3rd quarter goals summed up the match for me as firstly, goal sneak Anthony Poci dobbed a beauty from the boundry followed by a running Matz bomb 50 out, they could do nothing wrong . Aquinas' only two goals came in the second and their result was made worse when CHF Scott Kenner went off injured . The Bullants finished 12 goal winners, the perfect preparation for a Grand Final . Fitzroy vs Bulleen Templestowe (2-0) Preston City Oval, 17th September, 11 .20a m All has lead us to 2 hours of hard footy with either side with nothing to lose . The Bullants have turned it on for Finals . They are playing as a unit, unselfish and hard . The Reds have the list and some huge bodies, able to change games . The Bullant backline will have headaches, but have shown true strength, matching it with the best . The middle knows how to get the footy ; with Matz, Rametta, Morabito and Dave Voglis all competent but will need to run harder against the likes of Fitzroy's Kiel Donato and Olarenshaw and Dawson-Smith . Chris Ligris, Biggs and Beech will be dangerous, all able to kick goals, while the Reds back half have been an impenetrable force all year . But finals can stun a few sides, making it a battle of wits, not necessarily skill, For example, Aquinas almost came back and pinched it off Fitzroy two weeks ago, now they're out . Don't be surprised if the Bullants rattle a few feathers, but on paper, I can't go past Fitzroy as premiers ; they are tried and true . bernecich@netspace .net .au TEAM OF THE YEAR PAGE 50
