eelong's runaway win over Reservoir
Blacks crush Parade - Caulfield beat Cobur g S t. Bernard's, North, draw - now share lea d
by GEORGE MeTAGGART There were still more surprises in last week's round and only six premiership points separate the leaders from the ninth team . Geelong scored a 10-goal win over Reservoir Old Boys, whose early shine has dimmed considerably. Caulfield Grammar finished too strongly for Coburg to win comfortably and University Blacks inflicted a crushing defeat on Old Paradians . That means that two of the four teams sharing top place, Coburg and parade, "bit the dust" (or the mud) while the other two, St . Bernard's and North Old Boys, played a drawn game, and are now level in first place . Geelong's big win over Reservoir lifted them from seventh to fifth and they are only out of the four on percentage . They led Reservoir by 22 points at the interval and were 7 points in front at the last change, but they slammed on 10 goals in the last term, 8 of them in the final 15 minutes and ran out easy winners . It was Reservoir's first defeat in their five years at Barling Reserve . Caulfield held a slight edge o n Coburg all day in a close game but then slipped away in the last quarter, adding 5-2 to 5 behinds to win by 32 points . Poor kicking for goal by North Old Boys left them trailing St . Bernard's all day, but they got up to the front in the last term only to have victory slip from ther grasp when St . Bernard's drew level with a goal kicked after the final siren . University Blacks got a flying start against Old Paradians, who could not match the Blacks' pace or aerial strength, and were held to one goal for the first half, with Blacks more than 10 goals ahead . The second half was more even with Blacks losing some of their early brilliance, but they still won very easily.
University Blues 'led Ormond for the first half, but Ormond's strength in the ruck and roving departments told and they ran right away . Old Trinity scored by 8 points from Monash Blues and Ivanhoe finished 23 points ahead of Old Scotch . Kew were not troubled by De La Salle, Melbourne High had their first win at the expense of Power House, and Collegians beat Old Carey (the only losers to kick a century last week) by 6 goals . Marcellin continued on their winning way with a 32-point margin over Old Melburnians, but Alphington went down to St . Kilda CBC by 4 goals. Parkside had to struggle to beat Assumption by 11 points . Hampton Rovers crushed Old Ivanhoe by more than 9 goals in inflicting their first defeat . Commonwealth Bank beat St . Kevin's by 8 points in a contrast of kicking (9-17 to 10-3) and Brunswick kicked a huge score (30-10) against LaTrobe Blacks . Fawkner suffered their first loss when they went down to AMP Society by the narrow margin of 3 points . AJAX troubled Old Geelong who won by 19 points and St . Bede's inaccurate kicking (11-21) was mainly responsible for their 4-point defeat by Elsternwick .

Old Mentonians' better shooting helped them to beat Monash Whites by 19 points . Ormond scraped home by a point from University Blacks in the main Junior game, Beverley Hills pushed Power House to 13 points, and University Blues had 29 points to spare from Old Scotch . In Section 2, West Brunswick (1025) drew with Bulleen-Templestowe (11-19) . Tn the Reserves, Caulfield beat Coburg by 8 points, Blacks beat Parade by 5 .and North Old Boys easily accounted for St . Bernard's . Monash Blues beat Old Trinity by 2 goals, Melbourne High beat Power House by 2 points, Hampton won easily from Old Ivanhoe and Old Camberwell drew with Old Xaverians . AMP Soc,iety went down to Fawkner, Monash Whites easily beat Old Mentonians, LaTrobe Reds beat North Brunswick by 2 goals and Thornbury beat Marcellin 2nds by 4 points .

MARCELLIN VICE CAPTAIN HITS 100 Today Peter Gartner becomes the secon d player at Marcellin OC to play his 100th game for the club . "Noddy" was a member of our first team which began in the YCW in 1968 . After two years dogged by injuries, he appears to have recaptured his old form of past years with which he twice won the competitions' best and fairest awards as well as many club awards . Peter, a former captain, has taken over the vice captain's position and is seen to stir up enthusiasm both on and off the field with his fine clubmanship . Best of luck for your next hundred Peter.

"DE LA" MAN REACHES 150 MARK BOB TORMEY today plays his 150th gam e for De La Salle, an excellent achievement by a player who has given so much to the club. Bob joined the club from school in 1964 and has given great service to "De La" as a tireless ruckman . We are also indebted to Bob for his work as a committee member and treasurer. We sincerely congratulate "Big Bob" on reaching the 150 mark, and wish him well in further games. CENTURY TO ROVERS ROVER Congratulations from all at HAMPTON ROVERS to ALAN YOUNG on playing 100 games with the club . Alan who is a great kick and ball-getter for his size, always gives 100 per cent effort whilst roving or resting on the forward line . Alan worked his way up through the Scouts into the reserves where he was a member of last year's premiership side. He was then given the added responsibility as the club's number one rover and has carried out his job admirably . Well done "Youngy" we look forward to your next 100.

LOOKING BAC K By Noel Rundl e 5 Years Ago Coburg continued with their great form with an 8-goal win over Collegians, and were undisputed leaders . Best were Warfe, N . Beattie and Calleson and for Collegians, Tucker, Edwards and Hammet . Other undefeated senior teams were Assumption ('D') and Fairfield ('E'), while in th Junior Stctions, Ormond, University and Monash (section 1) and St . Bernard's OC and St: Kilda CBC (section 2) were unconquered . 200 games up to S .S .B.'s Ian Reade and 150 to Bruce Ferrall (A .M .P .) and Andy Home (Old Hailey . captain) while "Jocka" Nelson played his 250th game for Melbourne High - his best and fairest score to date was 'A' section - twice, 'B' section twice, 'C' section - once . "Jocka" captained the Australian Amateur side in 1962 . Commonwealth Bank's shocking kicking (6.24) was the main cause of their defeat by Alphington . 10 Years Ago Old rivals, Old Haileybury and Old Carey turned on a great game at Halifax Street where Old Carey's straight kicking (14 .1) kept them close and Old Hailey's inaccuracy (12 .19) almost cost them the game . Best for the victors were McCready, Henderson, Porter and for Carey Voight, Edwards and Smith . David Hughes kicked 13 goals at full forward for Old Scotch, who trounced Parkside 27 .14 to 5 .7 . Another team to score well was Footscray Tech who beat Monash Blues, 19 .13 to 5 .6 . Best for the winners were W . Luke (7), Menzies (7) and Dowling. 'C' section captains were Bill Luke (FTCOB) ; I . Burnside (St . Kevin's) ; John Fisher (Kew) ; G . Watson (SSB) ; Peter Stokes (Brunswick) ; John Elliott (Old Carey) ; B . Holden (St . Kilda CBC) ; A . McKenzie (Hampton Rovers) ; Andy Home (Old Hailey) ; Who captained Monash Blues ? 25 Years Ago Hampton Scouts had a sound win against Power House, with Bruce De Lacy 'possibly best afield' . Only 10 opints separated Coburg and Ormond at }-time but Ormond kicked 10 .7 to 2 .7 in the second half to maintain their unbeaten record while the other unbeaten team, Hampton Rovers, level with Ivanhoe at 1-time; also annihilated their opponents in the second half kicking, 9.6 to 2 .10 . Caulfield Gramm ., unbeaten in 'D' section had a convincing win against Univ . High 14 .22 to 7 .9 . Best were John Wilson, 'Hands' Davidson, 'Mocca' Johnstone, Selover, 'Todd' Cassidy, and Brian Batterham for the victors and Brian Ellis, Alan Young, Jack Baker and Jim Prior for U .H .S.

RE-DRAW IN JUNIOR SECTION 2
UMPIRE'S CORNER By Kevin McKa y
SOLID BUMPIN G The rules of our game permit bumping or pushing from the side. Sometimes such bumps or pushes are very vigorous, but if they are correctly placed on the side or front of an opponent they are quite fair under the rules, and should not be penalised" provided the ball is within 5 metres.
Umpires are instructed to "let the game flow", "not let it go" . There is to be no jostling at the centre before the ball is bounced . There must be no interference whilst the ball is about to be thrown in, or is being thrown in from the boundary . A plyaer who is going for a mark legitimately and interferes with an opponent from behind - NO FREE KICK . Breaches such as deliberately kicking or forcing the ball out of bounds must be penalised every time they occur . A mark taken on the goal line is deemed to be a mark.
The ball must be completely over the goal line in the case of a score, and completely over the line in the case of out of bounds . If a juggled mark is started on the g oal or behind line and completed over the line it is a behind . In a similar case on the boundary line the decision would be out of bounds . An umpire must give his decision on what he sees: Not what might have been . If he doesn't see it, he can't pay it . Most free kicks are easily defined and should not be overlooked unless the granting of the free penalises the side, then the call should be "play-on" . "SOCIAL" All umpires please note in your diary Sunday, June 23rd is the date of our annual golf day at Torquay . You are given plenty of notice so keep this date free of other minor engagements. If you don't play golf it won't matter as there will be a day-long bar-b-q also . .Ian Simpson, suspended for 364 days after last year's effort, will be released at midnight on June 22nd and so will be eligible to play. George McTaggart has also intimated he will take part provided he is allowed to drive his car around the course . - Don't forget the date, June 23rd .
Following the withdrawal of St . Bede' s O .C. from Junior Section 2, the fixtures for this section have been re-drawn . Today, Caulfield Grammarians will play Ivanhoe Instead of AJAX and Old Brighton Gramm . will meet AJAX, thus eliminating the byes . There will be no alteration to next Saturday's round as St . Bede's had a bye . The fixtures for the remainder of the season in this section will be published In next week's Amateur Footballer .
