Third term burst wins for Ormon d Geelong gain place in four -- Coburg out Bad day for, leaders - Six beaten, By GEORGE McTAGGART St . Bernard's just scraped home from Coburg last Saturday to hold their position at the top of the list, with now only a slightly better percentage than North Old Boys . Ormond were struggling in the first half against Reservoir Old Boys, but a 6-goal burst against the wind in the third term paved the way for them to win by five goals . North were trailing their opponents, Old Paradians, at the interval, but they too kicked six goals in the third quarter and won comfortably . Geelong nullified Caulfield Grammarians use of the wind in the first quarter, and this was a big factor in their 21-point win . They have now gained a place in the four, at the expense of Coburg, who have dropped to fifith . It was a bad day for leading teams, no less than six of the 14 being beaten, Old Trinity, Marcellin, Old Geelong, Old Mentonians, Ormond Juniors and Hampton Rovers Reserves . It was the first defeat for all except Ormon d Juniors. away early but Ormond recovered Coburg's shocking kicking for goa l well . undoubtedly cost them the game . Then Reservoir held them to only The first half was even until St . one goal (and 6 behinds) but it was Bernard's kicked a couple of quick a different story after the interval as goals to lead by 15 points at the Ormond took charge to slam on 6-1 to interval . Another turn-up was De La Salle's narrow defeat of the leaders, Old Ormond did better against the wind Trinity They scored by 3 points in in the first quarter than they did with a low-scoring game . Ivanhoe won easily from Collegians, to take top place on the list . Old Scotch were too strong for Melbourne High, and Monash Blues were 27 points in front of Old Carey at the finish . Parkside caused Marcellin's first defeat, scoring by 21 points and Old Brighton's straight kicking (11-4) gave them a 9-point win over Old Melburnians . Brunswick crushed Old Ivanhoe by 32 points, and State Savings Bank went down to Old Xaverians by a point. Old Geelong were beaten by Fawkner (their first defeat), going down by 20 points and AMP Society crashed badly against ANZ Bank . West Brunswick opened their account with a 19-point win over Elsternwick . And still the leaders tumble - Old Mentonians went down by a goal to North Brunswick, and dropped to third place .

Ormond Juniors suffered the biggest defeat of the leading teams - Beverley Hills beat them by more than 9 goals . Monash University beat Old Scotch by only 7 points and Power House had only 8 points to spare over North Old Boys . In Section 2, Ivanhoe kicked the huge score of 37-32 (254 points) against Caulfield Grammar . Hampton Rovers were the only Reserve leaders to be beaten and their poor kicking (4-13) was the cause of their 6-point loss to St. Kevin's (6-7) . But there were a couple of close ones ~ St . Bernard's beat Coburg by 8 points and North beat Parade by four.

DOUBLE CENTURY TO ALPHINGTON SHARP SHOOTE R 200 games to Peter Wayman at Alphington, spread over a long period . He began with our junior team and kicked a swag of--goals with both junior and senior sides . He won a Victorian jersey a few years ago, two in fact, going to Perth for a carnival series . He had a go with Northcote in the VFA, primarily because he played cricket there but we won him back again . A good mark, using a bulky body well to edge opponents out and has not been known to do anything out of place except crack a rib a couple of weeks ago .

A LETTER FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIA Publication in The , Amateur Footballe r earlier in the season of the award of Life so}lpg eq1 01 'V'd'V'A au# lo dlqs .raqucalnT and of Life Membership of the Australian Amateur Football Council to Mr . Jack McCann prompted a former Secretary and . Chairman of the South Australian Amateur Football League (Mr . Hugh Millard) to write to us . His letter is published here . The Editor, The Amateur Football er, Melbourne. Dear Sir, It was with very sincere gratification that I read of two most important events recently . In your publication I saw that you had been honoured with Life Membership of the V.A .F .A . and never has such an honour been so richly deserved for loyalty and dedication to our Australian game; my fervent congratulations . And the greatest Amateur football official of all time was honoured with a presentation by a great organisation - I write here of Jack McCann who has done so much and made so many sacrifices for amateur football . I trust that all Amateur players and officials In all States realise just how much we owe to Jack McCann. My first visit to Melbourne ever, as Manager of the 1925 S .A . Amateur team commenced a long line of friendships with V.A .F .A . personalities and none so great or as important to me as Jack's loyalty and sincerity.

3RD TON AT MARCELLI N Dave "The Mountain" Hurley reaches another milestone in an illustrious career at Marcellin . The Mountain, as a schoolboy, played in that memorable first ever game back in 1968 in the YCW . IDave was also amongst the best in our Grand Final win in 1971 . He has probably played his best games as a full back where his long clearing dashes, high marking and close checking have made the idal full back . He has represented the Eagles all over the ground, even as a wingman . 1972 saw Dave have a really brilliant year at centre half forward and there is little doubt he was largely responsible for getting us up to D grade . All at Eagleland congratulate Dave on his century. It doesn't really matter whether you're in the Firsts, Seconds or Thirds, just as long as you're an E'AG .

My sincere best wishes to Jack and George . Yours very truly, HUGH MILLARD . Mr . Millard's career as a sporting administrator (and a long career at that) was not confined to Amateur football . He was for many years Secretary of the South Australian Cricket Association . He retired from this position some few years ago - Ed . Yet another player at OLD BRIGHTON has celebrated his 50th game with the club . Last week, RUSSELL FLACK notched up his 50th game with a four goal performance for the reserve side against O .M .'s . This is typical of Flacky who has proven himself as one of the side's leading goal sneaks and who is constantly urging his chances for promotion . Russell has also proven himself to be a fine clubman nad a character in his own right and we at the O .B .G.F.C . congratulate him and wish him success in future games . Members of the A .M .P. club would like to congratulate GEOFF LEWIS who today plays his 50th game for the club . Geoff's versatality is his main asset, in that he has the ability to play well in just about every position on the field . Geoff is the physical fitness instructor for the club and his tireless assistance to the coach in this respect should be commended . Once again congratulations Geoff and all the best for the next 50 games .

LOOKING BACK By Noel Rundl e 5 Years Ago Monash played great football all over the field against Ormond only to almost lose through inaccuracy, final scores being Monash 9.19 to Ormond 11 .6 . Best for Monash were McMaster, Bartley and Rogers and for Ormond, Murray, Carr and Bourne . Alan McKenzie played his 150th game and Geoff Grimmer chalked up 100 for Hampton Rovers . "Beau" Kearney (St . Bernard's) Peter Gleeson (Parkside) and Bob Tredinnick (Melbourne High) also made the century . In- senior sections Coburg (A) and Fairfield (E) were the only undefeated teams after 6 games. 10 Years Ag o Old Melburnians and MHSOB battling for fourth place turned on a great game, with M .H.S . well ahead at half-time and then fighting off a determined challenge by O .M.'s to win by 4 points . Best were MHSOB J . Nelson, McKnight, Reed and O .M.'s A . Blazey, Clark and Kerr . How the scribes differ; Old Haileybury beat Old Carey by a goal . Old Haileybury saw the scores even, a free to Haileybury - then the siren . Kellock's kick was true and the game was won ; whereas Old Carey

stated that their opponents kicked a goal, from a mark, after the siren . What a close finish does to our judgment! 'E' section coaches were Bill Faul (AiPAX), Brian Wawn (Old Geelong), Bill McCabe (North Old Boys), Graham Humphreys (Old Trinity), G . Wearne (Old Camberwell), teams no longer with us Commercial Bank, E .S .&A . Ban k, amalgamated with ANZ Bank, East Malve rn and Kooyong. John Maunsell played his 100th game for Geelong . 25 Years Ago Hampton Rovers had a great win over Old Xaverians with Sam Birtles in superb form at centre half-forward with 8 goals . Other stars for the Rovers were Jeff Howden, Jim McQueen, Nevin Paynter, Geoff Jones, and Bob Lambden . Coburg broke the ice in 'A' section with a 9-point win over Ivanhoe, 13 .14 to 12.9 in a game where there w as never more than 10 points between the teams all day . Bob Ferguson, George Spencer and Les Warfe were stars for Coburg while Jack Bennie, Harry Thomas an d Ric Le Gassick battled well for the 'Hoes . Old Melburnlans came from behind for a much overdue win against Malvern with Neil Smyth rover (4 goals) best afield . First year players in Jim Hannan and Bryce Thomas shone in a desperate last quarter. Brunswick went right away in the last quarter to inflict Ormond's first defeat and win by 33 points . Alan Sporton was brilliant and N . Smith led a winning centre line .
