ST. BERNARD'S CRASH IN SECO N D HALF ORMOND'S EASY WIN -- NOW ON TO P North Old Boys down again -- out of four By GEORGE MeTAGGAR T After an even first half, Ormond ran right away from St . Bernard's in the battle for top place last Saturday, and scored an easy win . North Old Boys failed against Coburg and have lost their place in the four to Geelong . North's two successive defeats have proved costly - they dropped from equal top to fifth in two weeks . The only other leading team to be beaten was Monash Blues Reserves, who went down to De La Salle by more than six goals, but North Brunswick had a close call against Mcnash Whites, and won by only six points . Ormond's defence held St . Bernard's well for most of the first term, but St . Bernards cut loose towards the end of the quarter . and ran to a lead of 22 points . Ormond forged ahead halfway through the second quarter but could not gain a winning break, due to desperate defence by St . Bernard's which forced Ormond into hurried kicking, and they led by only 9 points at the interval . But Ormond took charge in the third term when they kicked 5 goals against the wind and were 20 points ahead at the last change . Ormond did practically as they liked in the final quarter when they added 7 goals and held St . Bernard's scoreless, to win by 67 points .
in front and held North off to win by 45 points . University Blacks matched, Reservoir Old Boys for the first half and led by 10 points at the interval but Reservoir cleared out in the third term and won by nearly 7 goals . University Blues also faded out in the second half, allowing Caulfield Grammarians to score by 7 goals . Ivanhoe beat Kew by 14 points in a keen tussle at Elsternwick Park and Old Trinity scored by 2 goals over Old Scotch . Old Carey had more than 5 goals to spare over Power House, Monash Blues beat De La Salle by a similar margin and Collegians won easily from Melbourne High .
Poor kicking by Alphington conOld Paradians had a slight edge tributed to their 22-point defeat by over Geelong in the first half and led Marcellin, who kicked 16-13 to Alphby 2 goals, but Geelong proved too ington's 11-21 . Old Haileybury had strong after the interval and scored 28 points to spare against Old Brighcomfortably by 21 points . ton and Uni . High beat National Bank by 26 points . Coburg always looked to be on top of North Old Boys, and increased Parkside were much too strong for their quarter-time lead against the Old Melburnians and the Alphington wind in the second term . story also applied to St . Kilda CBC, They slammed on 6 goals in the who kicked 8-19 to Assumption's 12-6, third quarter to be nearly 10 goals and were beaten by 11 points .

Nigel could rightly claim to have played in nearly every position on the field - and with not a little distinction . A great clubman Nigel still trains regularly despite the restrictions of his medical career. It is always a delight to lead to "Niger's" reliable passing . He's been see n ,in very regular company for some time now - but as yet neither his marital status nor football ability has suffered . Congratulations from all at the Club .

PERMITS CLOSE SOON Applications for permits for season 197 4 will close with the Records Secretary of the V .A.F .A . Mr . Bruce De Lacy, 67 Charman Road, Mentone, 3194 on July Ist . The only application considered after that date will be that of a player affiliated with a club in the amateur body of South Australia, Western Australia or Tasmania, who is transferred to Victoria in his employment, or a National Serviceman who returns to Victoria . A player who has played with a club in the V .A .F.A . this season, and has subsequently played with another club, must stand down for two matches before being eligible to play for his V.A .F .A . club again . In a case such as this, the date on which he last played with the other club must be shown in his permit application . Re-registration of a player whose permit is still in force, that is, a player who has no' played with any other club since he last played with the club with which he is seeking re-registration may be made at any time up to the last home and home match . CLEARANCES ALL CLEARANCES INVOLVING BODIES OTHER THAN THE V .A.F.A . must be forwarded to the secretary , Mr Jack Fullerton, 5 Correa Avenue, Cheltenham, 3192 (phone 93-1545) . SCOREBOARD Clubs are advised that the Scoring Boar d at Elsternwick Park must be operated by responsible club officials at all times . Children must not be allowed in the Scoring Board.
PRESS CORRESPONDENTS POST REPORT EACH SUNDAY - It is absolutely essential that copy be received by the Editor BY FIRST POST ON MONDAY EACH WEEK . Copy received after this time will not be considered . The only way to ensure delivery on Monday is to post SUNDAY - EARLY . ADDRESS ALL MATTER FOR PUBLICATION TO "THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER " Box 1564P, G .P .O ., MELBOURNE, 3001, and not to the Editor's private address . (Use addressed envelopes provided .) PREVIE W The A .B .C. Sporting Session from 3L0 each Friday (which commences at 6 .30 p .m .) will include a preview of the following day's amateur matches . Be sure to listen to this broadcast .
CORRECT SCORES ESSENTIAL Clubs are reminded that correct score s must be phoned to the Herald office, otherwise a fine will be incurred . And remember, too, that scores are incomplete without the points - offending clubs will be fined .
RESULTS OF MATCHES Results of amateur matches are broadcast in the Sporting Sessions of Radio Stations 3LO, (commencing at 6.20 p .m .), 3DB and 3KZ (included in 7 p .m . News) each Saturday evening and from Television Channels ABV-2 and HSV-7. Repeat on 3KZ, 9 .30 a .m. on Sunday . Channel 2 also provides quarter-by-quarter scores of A Section matches each Saturday afternoon .
OLD GEELONG would like to congratulate four players on reaching their 50th game in recent weeks : MIKE WHALLEY, PETER CONNOR, PETER HOLLAND and RON LEWIS . (In Ron's case it also brought his total number of V.A .F .A . games to 101 as he had played 51 with Hampton Rovers - not bad for a New South Welshman brought up on Rugby .) Providing he's fit, we'll also be adding ARTHUR YENCKEN to the list this week . It's 'well done' to all five and who have given excellent service to the club .
DUTIES OF RUNNERS The duty of an Official Runner is to carry messages from the coach to players and NOT to engage in altercations with players. The runner, in carrying such messages, must take the shortest possible route to the player concerned, and leave the field immediately after delivering the message .

UMPIRE'S CORNE R By Kevin McKa y LAWS OF OUR GAME When the ball is signalled by the boundary umpire as out of bounds, and the s ignal is not seen by the field umpire and play goes on, the boundary umpire must run after the field umpire and notify him at once . The fi eld umpire shall stop the play and order any intervening score to be annulled, unless in the mean-time he has given a free kick for a breach of the laws, and the ball shall be taken back to the spot where it went out of bounds and thrown in . Except as stated in the above law - goals or behinds scored cannot be annulled unless the goal umpire; immediatley rectifies a mistake by notifying the field umpire before the ball is bounced in the centre if he has wrongly signalled a goal, or before the ball is kicked off if he has wrongly sienalled a behind . When a score is to be annulled the goal umpire shall immediately stand in the centre of the goal line and hold both flags above his head in a crossed position . SOCIA L Next Sunday (June 23rd) is our Big Annual golf day at Torquay and bar-b-q afterwards at the home of David Dressing . This day has become the social event of the season, even if you can't play golf turn up for the bar-b-q - bring the kids and let them enjoy the fresh country air . We are due to tee off at 10 a .m ., so be early if you want to see the stars in action, if my memory is correct Bill Mason won last year's event, while Graham Allan and John Field tied for the worst score ( 179 for 18 holes) . That well-read reporter "Snow" of Snow's Storm has accepted our invitation to play, but his identity will be kept secret - unless he wins a trophy. George McTaggart say's he won't be playing because he hasn't got a golf bat? But he is quite willing to caddy for someone.
THE LONG, LONG TALE It may have been a long, hot summer it may be a long cold winter - BUT there's no doubt about it - IT IS A VERY LONG BLACK LIST THIS WEEK . And it could have been avoided if the clubs whose names appear on the list had taken the trouble to make a phone call . But maybe they'd prefer to pay the fines . Oh, and by the way, you may as well save yourselves the bother of thinking up an excuse to tell the Press Correspondent .

SNOW'S STORM Terribull noos fer yez, agen, mates -we gst beet age' larst week . - Shockin' it wuz . We ony kicked 5 goals fer the match, and got 3 in the furst quarter. After that we jest dyed. LOOKING BACK By Noel Rundl e 5 Years Ag o Caulfield Grammarians suffered their second successive defeat when they went down by 23 pis to Univ . Blacks, with Gourley, Burston and Stevens starring for the victors .
U .H .S .O .B . held off a last quarter challenge from Footscray Tech . who kicked 7 .3 in the final term to go down by only one point. Ashmead (5 gis .), D'Arcy and Wayne Taylor were best for the victors . Top score for the day was Old Camberwell's 22 .16 (148) against Elsternwick with main goalkickers Hanson 7, Priestly 0, and Redman 6 . K . Wood and Hughes also played well while best for 'Wick were Sharpe, Jim Sellers and A . Ramsay . 'B' section captains were G. Scott (FTCOB), Bill McWhinnie (Ivanhoe), Ken Middleton (Geelong), Graeme Boag (UHSOB), Trevor Gowers (Old Xaverians), J . Egan (St . Kilda CBCOB), Gary Amott (St . Bernards), J . Eastwood (De La Salle), Don Mullin (Kew) . Who captained Old Scotch? Stan Leek, after years of trying, finally kicked a goal for Brunswick! ! 10 Years Ag o 'C' section coaches were J . Pringle (St . Kevins), R . Catherall (Old Haileybury), Ray Martin (Kew), Tony Bull (SS Bank), Noel Voight (Old Carey), J . Rees (St . Kilda CBCOB), Sam Birtles (Hamp . Rovers), John Wood (Brunswick) and Bill Luke (FTCOB), who coached Monash Blues ? Undefeated teams for first round were University Blacks in B . Section and Kew in 'C' section . Leading "trueboot artists" were A Section - Jeff Trotman ,(Ormond) 29, B Section David Hughes (Old Scotch) 43, C Section Bowring (Old Halley) 30, D Section - Collier (Fairfield) 38, E Section - McMillan (Old Geelong) 42, F Section - Seaburgh (St . Luke, Gilmour's Dairy, Arena Sporting Footwear, Repco, Bell's Freer's Hotel, Channel 0, and AnsettANA . 25 Years Ago The interstate team against South Australia at St. Kilda Cricket Ground on King's Birthday lined up as follows :Bks : Jane, Brady, Bennie ; H .Bks: Rowse, P .Murphy, Sheehan ; C : Granger, Arnold, M . Smyth ; H .Fds : Mellors, Birtles, Fitchett ; Fwds: Ebert, Backhouse, Russell ; Rk : J . Cordner, Spencer ; Rover : B . Judd ; 19, 20 : J . 'Kennedy, S . Morris .
Page 20
Only 4 out of the 20 were 6' or over . Victoria had a very easy victory, 15.1 8 to 3 .8 with small men Ebert, Judd and Mellors outstanding in the heavy conditions . Not much handball - only 23 for the game . Umprie was Roy Alexander, Boundaries were Leighton and Marks, and goal, Dickens and James . In Tasmania the Victorians also had easy wins, 18 .22 to 8 .6 in Hobart on Saturday ,nd 26 .18 to 4 .9 in Launceston on Monday . Sturdy men in those days !
DID YOU LACK A "ZAC" There must have been an acut e shortage of "zacs" (sorry - 5 cent pieces) after the games last Saturday. No fewer than seven HOME clubs apparently couldn't find one to phone the final scores to The Herald Office . All but one of the these seven couldn't even find one in time to ring the Press Correspondk:nt bfeore 7 p .m . And a couple of those in the top sections apparently couldn't spare the second coin to phone details of Goalkickers and Best Players to the Press Correspondent. Had these offenders done the right thing, they would have saved their club finances up to $4, and saved the Press Correspondent (and his wife) from making a total of 21 phone calls in an endeavour to obtain the missing scores . And believe me, they were not very amused, particularly as the last score was received at 1 .40 p .m. on Sunday - almost 21 hours late . Just to add to the confusion, nine of the scores phoned were incorrect . The Association benefits to the extent of $39 in fines, less of course, the cost of the 21 phone calls . Better make sure you do better today - as we don't intend to "chase" any missing ones this week .
