GEELONG JUST HOW FROM NORTH, OLD TRINITY CRUSH IVANHOE - M.H.S. BEAT KEW St. Kilda C. B .C. topple Marcellin By GEORGE McTAGGART Geelong scrapped home from North Old Boys by five points in a thrilling finish to the main game last Saturday and held their place in the four . There were several upsets in B Section where Old Trinity trounced the leaders, Ivanhoe, by seven goals, and Melbourne High, ninth, beat Kew, fourth, by 31 points . Marcellin, C Section leaders, went down badly to St . Kilda CBC, who were sixth, in the game at Elsternwick Park . Half the home-and-home season is now behind us, but in most sections the position is wide open and there are bound to be many more upsets before we know who will fight out the finals . North opened in fine style against Geelong who took some time to settle down . North kicked 7 goals in the first quarter (half-forward Les Murray getting 4 of them) and were 25 points in front at quarter-time . Geelong played better in the second term but North's 4 goals straight left them with a 10-point lead :at the interval . North's earlier accuracy was missing in the third quarter when they kicked 2-6 to 2-2 and the game was wide open at the final change . Geelong gradually wore their opponents down and got to the front but the result was in the balance till the final siren . The back lines were on top for about the last 10 minutes of play, when neither side was able to score . A poor first half by Reservoir Old Boys left them trailing Caulfield Grammarians by more than 8 goals at halftime, and although the second half was much more even, Caulfield scored easily by 55 points . University Blacks had no counter to Coburg's effective handball and fast, play-on game and were more than 9 goals down at the interval. The Blacks did a lot better in the second half but they had given Coburg too

much of a start and were beaten by 28 points . Old Paradians found Ormond too big and too fast and were never in the game, while St . Bernard's won as they liked against University Blues after an even first term . A burst of 7 goals in the second quarter gave Melbourne High a 35point lead over Kew and they finished on strongly to win well . Old Trinity raced away from Ivanhoe in the first half to lead by 41 points at the interval and that was that . The second half was very even but the damage had been done as far as Ivanhoe were concerned . Collegians finished well to beat De La Salle by 33 points after being 10 points down at half-time . But they nearly kicked themselves out of it in the third term when they added 2-10 . Monash Blues had a big win over Power House and Old Scotch had nearly 9 goals to spare over Old Carey . St . Kilda CBC won it in the first half when they built up a lead of nearly 7 goals over Marcellin, who went down by 39 points . National Bank worried Parkside for the first three quarters but Parkside race d

away in the last term when they kicked 8 goals . Uni . High beat Assumption by 15 points, but Old Haileybury and Old Brighton were much too strong for Old Melburnians and Alphington respectively . Brunswick and Hampton Rovers staged a remarkably even game for three quarters but Brunswick finished a little more strongly and won by 3 goals, while Old Xaverians got home from Old Ivanhoe by 7 points . AJAX trailed St . Bede's by 22 points at the interval but got to within 3 points at three-quarter-time and slammed on 8 goals in the last quarter to score by 6 goals . St. Bede's kicking didn't help them - they kicked 2-13 in the second half . St. Pat's kept within range of Fawkner for the first half but then faded out to be well beaten, and ANZ Bank led West Brunswick narrowly for three quarters but rattled on 10 goals in the final term for an easy win . LaTrobe Reds kicked 34-34 (238 points) against Beverley Hills and Old Mentonians were nearly as severe on Dookie & Long . Coburg were too strong for Monash University in the main Junior game and won by 37 points and University Blues crushed Power House by nearly 10 goals. In the Reserves, Caulfield Grammar pushed Reservoir to 14 points and St . Bernards got home from Uni . Blues by only 6 points . Ivanhoe thrashed Old Trinity, who managed only 5 points in the second half, and Collegians beat De La Salle by 29 points . Marcellin easily beat St . Kilda CBC, Old Xaverians beat Old Ivanhoe by 10 points and St . Kevin's pipped State Bank by a point . Elsternwick went down to A .M .P. by 3 points and Thornbury were well beaten by Monash Whites . DOUBLE CENTURY TO NORTH OLD BOY JOHN RUSSELL today becomes the firs t NORTH OLD BOY to complete 200 games . Russ played his first game on 25th April, 1964 when we kicked our record score of 35.39 against East Malvern . He was a member of our two premiership teams in 1964 and 1965 and has given the Club outstanding service for the last eleven seasons . Russ is having another fine season roving for the Reserves and his fine team play and unselfishness on the forward line is always an inspiration . All at North thank John for his splendid service to the Club and congratulate him on his fine achievement . We wish him well for the rest of his career and are confident that his form will help us to a Reserves premiership this season.

BUSY DAY AT OLD HAILEYBURY Today against Parkside sees AND Y "STINK" LANGFORD-JONES reach his "100" games for OLD HAILEYBURY . A modest type of footballer "Stink" describes himself as every coach's dream - however, past and current coaches may differ on this view! ! A regular at training, Stink has also been responsible in several off the field positions and has been a great asset to the club . A serious ankle injury has delayed his "ton", but he has used the break to assist(?) "Augie" in coaching the Reserves .

TERRY "JEXY" DANCKERT last week played his 200th club game . He became the fourth player in the club to reach this milestone and now is definitely classed as a veteran . During his football career with ST . KILDA CBOC he has played many excellent games with both the firsts and reserves . He has won the best and fairest for the reserves in 1970, 1972 and 1973, captained the reserves 1970-1973 and coached them last season . "Jexy" is one of the stalwarts of the club and has always proved an excellent leader. Congratulations Terry .

BALL IEFF S Also GRANT HATTAM and JOHN CRACKNELL play their 50 games for the Bloods . "Hatty" is one of the most improved players the club and his strong football and classy hand passing is a major part in our position on top of the ladder. His dedicaton is a great example to all - but his activities on Mondays and Thursdays apparently aren't as successful as his law studies ! "Cracker's" form is more remarkable when one considers his inability to train . However, his restricted time hasn't prevented his recent engagement - his ability to stick to an opponent is obviously not r,stricted to the football field . Congratulations to "JACKIE" POTTER who plays his 50th game with POWER HOUSE today . Winner of the Reserves Best and Fairest last year, Ian has finally realised his potential and is now enjoying his best season ever on the wing in the seniors . His great pace and long kicking have made him one of the club's most consistent players this year . Well done Ian and all the best for another good game today . Congratulations from all at MARCELLIN to MICHAEL BUTLER who plays his 50th game today . "Tommy" started with Marcellin as a boundary umpire while still at school and is now doing great things as a player. He has played in almost all positions with great determination and success . After a disappointing season last year with a "wonky" knee Mick has regained his form of old and is set to finish this season the same way he started . He has also given great service off the field being on the committee and was a big factor in making this year's Ball so enjoyable and successful . Well done Mick. BOB KELLY plays his fiftieth game with ASSUMPTION OLD COLLEGIANS today against National Bank . Bob has played mostly as a pocket defender but lately has been winning kicks as a forward . Away from the field Bob is now a member of the club committee . Well done Bob . 200 GAME S TO ST . KILDA VETERAN CENTURY FOR PARKSIDER PARKSIDE congratulates BOB "CHALKY " FLETCHER on reaching his 100 games with the club . From being one of the juniors of '69, he has been one of those players that every club must have - the player who plays mainly in tt,e reserves, but when asked to piay in the seniors does a great job . Well done Bob, and forget about asking for any transfers . 100 UP TO TECH ROVE R All at FOOTSCRAY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY congratulate IAN MURLEY on this his century . Ian has given sterling service as a rover and his uncanny shooting for goal has given us many a happy memory as it is a long time since we've had a rover that can kick either foot . A gentleman on and off the ground . Good on you Murls!

By Noel Rundl e 5 Years Ago On the interstate scene, Victoria suffered a crushing 55-point defeat at the hands of South Australia at Albertan Oval, Adelaide but fared better in Hobart where Victoria broke away in the last quarter against Tasmania to win by 25 pts . South Australia outpaced and outplayed Victoria to build up a 6-goal lead in the first quarter and were in command all day . Best in Adelaide were Beattie, Mullin and Gordon while in Tasmania Cooke, Rattray and Allden starred . On the local scene, Coburg had gone through the first round undefeated and were two games in front of Ormond who were in turn two games ahead of Caulfield Gramm ., Collegians and Old Paradians . Milestones - Pere McArdle (St . Kevin's), Ian Cameron (Ormond - 100 games . 10 Years Ago Old Melburnians outside the four in A section, caused the season's upset by easily defeating the leaders, Ormond . Conditions were the worst for the season with heavy rain, wind and slippery grounds . O .M .'s adapted their game to the conditions well and were best served by T . Knott, R. Knott, and Wood, while for Ormond Pert, Girling and Cameron battled hard, with the final scores 7 .12 to 5 .6 . Closest game in 'A' section was University Highs 1-point win over Melbourne High - 4 .8 (32) to 5.1 (31) . R . Keddie, Migios, and Taylor (UHSOB), and Pascoe, Nelson and Turnbull (MHSOB) were best . St. Kevin's veteran Jack Douglas played his 155th game to break the existing club record of 154 held by John Filgate . 'D' section coaches were Jack Hudson (Nat . Bank), Graeme Jeffrey (Old Brighton), Bill McGrory (Glenhuntly), Jack Kent (St . Bernard's), Ray Moody (Bellfield), Bill Hambly (ANZ Bank), K . Kenny (Fairfield), J . McGregor (Elsternwick), K . Gray (ToorMalvern) and Peter Charleston (Preston) . 25 Years Ago Old Xaverians inflicted Old Scotch's third defeat in a row . B . Considine, Old Xav's full forward, starred with 9 goals while other to impress the scribe were Tiernan (wing), Jorgenson (halfback) and Dooley (rover) . Old Scotch's best were "Bill" Bate, 'determined' Don Morone, and Mick Eggleston showed flashes of brilliance . Parkside (B section) lost their first game at home for the season when they went down to Univ . Blues by 14 points . Best for 'Side were Simmons, Watson and Allen, and for Blues Ken Phelan (6 gls at full forward), Geoff Witen and Frank O'Connor .

SNOW'S STOR M

UMPIRE' S

By Kevin MciGp y

HOLDING THE BALL HOLDING THE MA N For some reason supporters of our ganie find this rule difficult to understand, yet there is really nothing difficult about it . So I ask you to read this article - think about it - and you will find that rarely is the umpire wrong in his interpretation of the rule. Very few players in SENIOR FOOTBALL DELIBERATELY dispose of the ball "illegally" . A player not in possession of the ball, held by an opponent firmly enough to stop him or retard his progress should be given a reasonable chance of disposing of it by kicking or handballing, otherwise a free kick shall be awarded to his opponent for holding the ball. A player who lies on or over the ball is deemed to be in possession of it. A player not is posession of the ball, when held by an opponent shall be awarded a free kick . When a player claims a mark, the ball having been touched, and retains possession when held by an opponent, if the field umpire is satisfied the player has not heard his call, "play-on" no free kick shall be given and the ball shall be bounced . But if the ball has been taken away from the player by another player the field umpires mall "play on" shall hold good. If a player is in the act of kicking or handballing, and he is swung off balance, and his foot or hand does not connect with the ball - play on . If a player is bumped and the ball falls from his hands - play on . When a player is knocked on the arm or elbow, causing him to drop the ball play on . When a player has his arms pinned to his sides, causing him to drop the ball play on . player pulled by one arm or swung the ball falling from his hands - play on . When a player has the ball held to his body by another player - ball up . "SOCIAL" Tomorrow is our annual golf day at Torquay "kick off time" is 9 .30 a .m . to 11 .00 a .m. This day has become a big one during our season and we expect a full turn-up of umpires and families . Bring the kids - if-they can't be bothered playing in the playgrounds let them follow dad around the course the laughter will do them a lot of good . (What about the language? - Ed . ) This is your chance to win a prize we give so many trophies you really only have to attend to get one.

Wacko! back ter the winnin' list agen, at last - an' boy wuz it a releaf. I reccon if we's 'ad got beet agen larst week, I'da reely been down in the dumps . THANK YOU - UMPIRE S Many thanks to the umpires who cooperated last week by handing their reports in to one of the Travelodge Motels and a VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO UMPIRE PETER FEIL who not only organised this arrangement but also "did the rounds" of the Travelodges on Monday to collect the reports and take them to the Secretary of the V.A .F.A .

A PAT ON THE BACK TO THE CLUBS, TOO ! Thanks also to the clubs who co-operated so well last Saturday. We didn't have to chase any scores, which saved us a lot of time and also saved you some money . A particular thank you to the clubs in A and B Sections who gave us the Goalkickers and Best Players for their Reserves as well as their seniors . Ths helped a lot, particularly with the holiday on Monday and the uncertainty about the mail delivery . We'd like you to do the same this week please .
