Elacks move up to fifth
By GEORGE MeTAGGAR T Coburg proved too strong for Geelong in the main game of last Saturday's round and ran out winners by six goals . Ormond inflicted a crushing defeat on North Old Boys, who lost their fourth game in a row, and dropped from fifth to sixth . University Blacks moved a step closer to the final four with a sound win over Caulfield Grammarians . The Blacks are now fifth on the list, only four points outside the four. Although there were only 38 century scores recorded, seven of these were by losing teams, three of them in B Section . Elsternwick kicked 19-9 (123, points) but were beaten by Old Geelong - by eight goals . Coburg had the edge on Geelong in the first half, with Geelong fighting back well in the second term to get within 11 points of the home side, but Coburg virtually made the game safe when they added 4-3 to Geelong's 5 behinds in the third quarter . This left Geelong 33 points down at the last change and they were unable to make any impression in the final term . North Old Boys put on a disappointing effort against Ormond after their good display against Geelong the previous week . Ormond took charge practically from the start and their strong defence worried the North forwards, who managed only one goal in the first half . Ormond at this stage were almost 9 goals in front and had the game well in their keeping, but they gave North no respite after the interval and ran out winners by more than 13 goals . St . Bernard's did much the same to Reservoir Old Boys, who fell further behind as the game progressed . St. Bernard's gained a lead of nearly 7 goals in the first half and had 65 points to spare at the finish . University Blacks raced away from Caulfield Grammar with a burst of
8 goals in the second quarter, and although they kicked only 4-17 in the second half - they were 11-5 at halftime - it was enough to win by 45 points . Old Paradians- broke the drought after a run of six defeats when they scored an easy win over University Blues . It was another day of surprises in B Section, where three of the top four teams were beaten . Melbourne High, who had beaten Kew (fourth) the week before, did, even better last Saturday by toppling the leaders, Old Trinity, by nearly . 6 goals . Ivanhoe went down to bottom team, Old Carey by 21 points, and Collegians beat Kew by 9 points . The only team in the four to win was Monash Blues and they scraped -home-by only 7 points from Old Scotch . Parkside's slightly better kicking for goal gave them an 8-point win over Old Haileybury in a stirring struggle (18-13 to 16-17) . Parkside's win enabled them to take over top place, with Old Haileybury dropping to third . St . Kilda CBC beat Old Brighton by 26 points and knocked them out of the four.

Hampton Rovers had a struggle to beat Old Camberwell by 9 points (8-18 to 8-9) and Commonwealth Bank put up a good fight, against State Savings Bank before going down by 21 points. Biggest surprise in E Secton was the 14-point defeat of AMP Society by bottom team, St. Pat's, who had only one previous win . University Reds scored by 13 points from Monash Whites and Thornbury caused an upset with a 17-point win over North Brunswick, who were level in top place with Old Mentonians . Ormond scored an easy win over University Blues in one of the main Junior games, and University Blacks went down by 14 points to Coburg . Monash University beat Power House by 23 points . Geelong beat Hampton Scouts by 4 points and Ivanhoe had some trouble in beating West Brunswick by 22 points . North Old Boys' straighter kicking gave them a 5-point win over Ormond
in the Reserve Section, and Reservoir pipped St . Bernard's by a point . Monash Blues went down by a goal to Old Scotch and Collegians beat Kew by only 8 points . Parkside beat Old Haileybury by more than 7 goals and Old Brighton beat St . Kilda CBC by 3 goals . State Bank beat Commonwealth by 2 points, St. Kevin's had •a big win over ~Old Xaverians, Old Geelong thrashed Elsternwick and North Brunswick scored easily over Thornbury. COBURG JUNIORS AWAY AGAIN Clubs in Junior Section 1 are advised that Coburg will play the remainder of their home matches this season at NEWLANDS HIGH SCHOOL OVAL, MURRAY ROAD, EAST COBURG. OLD HAILEYBURY congratulate JOHN LEGGE on his 50th game with the club . "Leggy" started his career at Ormond but transferred to the Bloods, where in 1973 he formed an integral part of our Reserves Premiership . This year he has consolidated his position in the seniors and has proved invaluable in the last line of defence . Always willing to help out (particularly behind the bar!!) he is a great asset to the club - and to Chnssie! (much to the chagrin of this press correspondent) .

Although his team won last week, Snow seems more interested in the Umpires' Golf Day, on Sunday . Read all about it in . SNOW'S STORM Well, china's, I didden win the golf at the umpy's do larst Sundee, but at leest I beet me ole mate (an' frendly rival) Kev. McKay, an' wun a prize fer that . Yairs, 'e scored 116 an' I made 139, so ya see - I beet 'im ezy. Tell youse wot, though, this golfin' game is a strenewus bizness . Reccon it's much ezyier coachin' a football team than playin' a game'r golf . Lotta the umpy's 'ud 'ave the same idea, too, I'd reccon, most'er them looked a lot ireder than after umpirin' a footy match . I'll tell yez, though, it wuz a reel good c' , y an' it wuz nice meetin' the umpy's an'r here wives, speshally wen yer new ye ,,)den be reported . 3ev an' young Kev enjoyed thereselves too . w Bev . torkin' kwite serius to summer h ladies . An' I reccon they convinced Bev . that 3 ,he umpy's is reely good blokes at 'art . r see Bev . nevver 'ad much time for the men in wight. But now she's met summer them, she's changed 'er choon . Maybe she'll be a bit more tollerant in fewtcher . Anyway, thanks Kev, and umpy's fe r the invertaishun - we 'ad a reel good day. Mustav' a shot at George McTaggart 'e skwibbed it. Oh 'e wuz down their orlite, but 'e didden play golf - jest like I told but t know carnt at comment a mite at lees t - Ed . ) Oh yairs, about the footy - we wun it O .K . didden 'ave much trubble . I think we wun bye about 5 or 6 goals - we wuz nevver in danger of defeat . (I wondered when he would stop bragging about his golf and socialising with the umpires, and get down to what he's supposed to write about - FOOTBALL - Ed .) It could be a pretty tuff wun, terday though . We play the mob wot beet us in the gran final last year, an' we beet 'emurly in the seesun, so I bet there'll be out fer revenge . But I recon we can winnit - 'ope so . Tell youse about it neckst week china's .

By Kevin McKay Umpire's are men of character, they must be above reproach, conscientious, and scrupulously fair - firm with decisions and a determination which will not allow themselves to be influenced by players or spectators . Their chief assetts are 1 . Knowledge of the laws . 2 . Physical fitness . 3 . Control . 4 . Concentration . 5 . Knowledge of the fundamentals of the game . Without these assetts an umpire will never make the top . Once an umpire makes a decision whether the players or spectators agree he must see that the players obey . An umpire must give his decision on what he sees - not on what might have been . His position on the field will have a bearing on the correctness of his decision . If he does not see it, he can't pay it, It is unforgiveable for an umpire field or goal - to turn his back on the play ; or watch the flight of the ball in the air . Players, not the ball, make the mistakes and break the laws. Complete concentration is all important . The game is in the hands of the field umpire, he must control it with everything at his command - knowledge, quick thinking, confidence and determination, and a whistle which demands attention . The whistle is all-powerfu l Players, officials and supporters must have confidence in the umpire . The umpire must have confidence in himself, and his knowledge of the game . He will be judged by his demeanor on and off the field . Reply to F Section Coach 8/6/74 . Re-order off Rule There is no "set infringement" for which a player may be "sent off the ground" . This is up to the field umpire as he sees it - once sent off the player cannot be replaced . The team plays the remainder of the game one man short . A player sent off - is automatically reported . SOCIAL The golf day last Sunday was quite enjoyable with some really good scores returned . John Knowles was the winner, he was closely followed by John Field who ran hot with a score of 86 . Ex Brunswick footballer Brian Goodman was overjoyed with his score of 210 until he found out the scoring is not the same as circket . Ian Simpson was out-palyed and outsmarted by the weighty performance of the coach .
Page 18
David Dressing smacked a screamer off side on to the tee from which the coach was about to, hit, "David said will I c®11 out fore" . Bill Mason replied "No! wait until it hits him" . Altogether a really good day . It's still a secret Snow of Snow's Storm won a trophy but his identity remained undisclosed .
UMPIRES ON THE CHEAP The following clubs used V.A .F .A. umpires for Practice matches prior to the start of the season and have yet to meet their financial commitments in this regard . Although advised at the Delegate's Meeting on June 3rd. OLD XAVERIANS (2) MONASH UNIVERSITY (1) CAULFIELD GRAMM . (2) AJAX (3) NATIONAL BANK (1) OLD PARADIANS (1) PARKSIDE (1 ) Any club unsure as to when cheque's are to be made payable, should contact the Secretary of the V .A .F.A . immediately . ASSUMPTION DEFENDER PLAYS HIS 150th Appropriately in a~ame against a sister school (Marcellin) BILL JACKSON plays his one hundred and fifieth game for ASSUMPTION OLD COLLEGIANS . Back in 1964 "Jacko", while still a school boy joined the new Assumption side in F Section . Commencing with the 1964 finals "Jacko"played 126 consecutive games before attending a wedding in July 1971 . For the last two seasons "Jacko" has worked and lived around Europe. His travels have broadened his song repertoire and refreshed his football . This season he has returned to play solid and consistent football in the back pocket . Off the field "Jacko" has proven the life of many functions with his renditions of "Sonny Boy' to say nothing of his recitation of Archibald A . The Bush School Boy. 100 UP TO CAULFIELD PLAYER CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS would like to congratulate DAVID CLARK on reaching one hundred games with the club . 100 UP TO ELSTERNWICK DEFENDER All at ELSTERNWICK wish to congratulate IAN RAMSAY on playing his 100th game today. Sproule (centre) and "Rusty" Burt (Full Forward) were best for Ivanhoe . Perhaps Rusty was spurred to a~ood performance by this comment from Ivanhoe's press corr. "Notice 'Rusty' has worked riaht down the field to full forward wilere to move next? " Kew preserved their undefeated record with a 3-point win over Old Carey at Bulleen in a very hard game played in windy conditions . Noel Stokes in the centre, Don Mullin and Ray Walker were best for Kew while Carey's centre line of Tony Fink, John Aldridge and David Murray gave great drive to their team . 25 Years Ago Old Scotch lost their fourth game in a row when they went down to Coburg when the home side rattled on 7 goals in the second quarter with the little men starring in heavy conditions . George Bowden, Bill Taggart and Bob Ferguson were best for Coburg while Mick Eggleston, dominated the centre, was Old Scotch's best player . Hampton Rovers had a record crowd at their ground to see the clash for second place on the 'A' section ladder with the visitors, Ormond, kicking badly with 7 .24 (66) but still scrapping home by 11 points from Rovers 8 .7 (55) . Ivanhoe were holding an illustrated Football Lecture at Lower Heidelberg Town Hall - compere was Bruce Andrew, and speakers were Phonse Kyrie, Lou Richards ,

Jack Hamilton, Geo . Hams, Jack Ross and Bill Twomey . Admission was one shilling and threepence! Ivanhoe Juniors maintaned their undefeated record with a 16-goal victory over Hampton Scouts who were third on the list . Colin Mance (later a V .A .F.A . umpire), McKenzie and Jenson were best for Ivanhoe .
BALL BRIEF S DOUBLE CENTURY AT DE LA SALLE TERRY DORIZZI last Saturday joined a most select group by making his 200th appearance for DE LA SALLE . This wonderful career spanning fourteen years has been a hallmark of consistency - he has neither gained nor lost pace, his baulks are as "blind" as ever, while his enthusTer ry has iasm has not dimmed at all . thoroughly enjoyed his 200 Saturday "battles" and is a fine example of Amateur football - a courageous, versatile player and a hard working committeeman . Congratulations Terry on a great achievement . 150 GAMES TO R .O .B .'s WINGER Congratulations from all at Reservoir Old Boys go to GARY VEITH who plays his 150th game for the club today . Ga ry 's pace, stamina and ball disposal have made him a very important member of the team which rose from 'E' section to 'A' section . Ga ry has also always been both socially and adminstratively involved in the club, and is at present doing a fine job as the club secretary . Thanks a lot Gary, and all at Reservoir are confident we'll see you reach the 200 mark. 150-PLUS-TO AJAX DEFENDER Belated conBr Aulations to BARRIE "SHNORER" JURBERG who played his 150th game with AJAX several weeks ago. Barrie, captain of the seniors from 1969 to 1971 is a former Club Champion. His brilliant back pocket play has put him ,among the AJAX "Greats" . A great footballer and a great friend of all at AJAX deserves heartiest congratulations from all his friends . CENTURY TO A .M.P . RUCKMAN The A.M.P . CLUB would like to congratulate JOEL REED who plays his 100th game for the club today . Although today's game is only Joel's second for season 1974, after coming back from a rather severe leg injury, he has been a most consistent performer over the past seasons . Joel's main attribute is his remarkable mobility for a "big fella" and with his confidence at peak there are few opposition ruckmen who can match his big leap and accurate punching of the ball from the centre bounce and throw-ins . Once again congratulations Joel for your fine first 100 games and let's hope there are many more in the future .
