GOBURG'S GREAT WIN; OVER ORMOND ST. BERNARD'S NOW BACK ON TOP - But lucky to beat Caulfield Grammarians Blacks in the four - knock Geelong ou t By GEORGE McTAGGAR T Coburg scored a great win over the leaders, Ormond, in a high-scoring encounter at Ormond, in the main game last week. Ormond lost their place at the head of the list to St. Bernard's, who were lucky to scrape home from Caulfield Grammar . Geelong could not hold off University Blacks in the last quarter and dropped down to fifth, the Blacks having displaced them on percentage . Kew suffered their third defeat in a row and Collegians have replacedthem in the four . Parkside, Old Mentonians, Ormond Juniors and Ivanhoe Reserves were other leading teams to be beaten, but Old Mentonians and Ivanhoe Reserves managed to hold their top places on percentage . Coburg kicked 8-1 against the wind in the first qaurter to gain a firm grip on the game but they didn't really capitalise on their good start, for in the second term they kicked 5-6 and were only 4 goals ahead at the interval . A 7-goal burst by Ormond in the third quarter carried them to a 17point lead and they looked to have overcome Coburg's early onslaught when they were still in front halfway through the last term, but Coburg were too strong at the end and won by 14 points . Caulfield Grammarians looked to have St . Bernard's beaten when they led by 7 points at three-quarter-time and had the use of the wind in the last quarter but they died right out against a determined finish by St . Bernard's and went down by 2 points . St . Bernard's were not impressive and must admit they were lucky to ~vin . Caulfield kicked 2 goals against the wind in the third term but could manage only a solitary point in the last. There was little between Geelong
and the Blacks all day. Blacks led by 10 points at half-time and trailed by 4 points at three-quarter-time, but they kicked 4-1 to 1-3 in the final term to win by 2 goals . Their more accurate kicking (14-7 to 11-13) was a big factor in their win . Reservoir Old Boys led Old Paradians by a goal at the interval, but Parade kicked 7-4 to a goal in the third quarter and held Reservoir off in the last to win by 13 points . University Blues were no match for North Old Boys who romped home by 15 goals, to end a run of four successive defeats . , Monash Blues thrashed Ivanhoe to the tune of 8 goals and Kew went down to Old Trinity by 31 points . Old Carey beat Melbourne High by more than 8 goals, Old Scotch beat De La Salle by 3 goals and Collegians were too strong for Power House. Assumption surprised Marcellin who got home by only 7 points and Parkside kicked themselves . out of it to go down to Alphington by 26 ponits - 18-12 to 12-22 .

Uni. High beat Old Brighton by nearly 9 goals and Old Haileybury kicked a huge score, .(30-20) against National Bank . State Savings Bank had more than 7 goals to spare over Hampton Rovers but Old Xaverians were hard pressed by Commonwealth Bank, who ran them to 9 points . AJAX beat ANZ Bank by 23 points and knocked them out of the four . LaTrobe Reds' better kicking (16-8 ) gave them a 5-point win over Old Mentonians ( 14-15), and North Brunswick handed out a thrashing to University Reds . There were some surprises in Junior games too. Monash University beat Ormond by 34 points, and bottom team St. Bern ard's scored by 3 goals over University Blacks, who lost their place in the four . In Section 2, Ivanhoe were much too strong for Geelong and won by more than 8 goals . In the Reserves, Monash Blues beat Ivanhoe by 4 points, Old Scotch beat De La Salle by 27 points and Power House beat Collegians by 9 points .
All at MARCELLIN O .C. wish to cong PETER HOLMES who both play their 50th games today . As a dashing halfback flanker, thet"Pumper" played every game in the club's first season . He played for four seasons straight, had a two season layoff from competitive football, and this season he has returned to be vice-captain of the F Reserves side . Off the ground he has proved to be a great stalwart of the club and was the first chairman of the the social committee . The "Greek" began at "eagleland" in '72 and quickly settled into the roving berth of the Reserves . Last season was a great one for him and he easily won the Reserves best and fairest . Not being content as the reserves deputy vice captain, the Greek shifted to the wing, and, keeping his form of old, earned his promotion to the seniors where he is easily holding his own . Best of luck for the bi g
one today Peter and Gerry. Page 4
P~RE'S CORNER ADVICE FOR NEW UMPIRE S l . Charging - is violently meeting and pushing a player in a manner not authorised by the laws of the game, when he is not in possession of the ball or when he is in the air. 2. Hand-ball is clearly holding the ball with one hand and striking it with the clenched fist of the other hand . 3. Holding the ball - a player shall be deemed to be holding the ball if he retains possession of it while being firmly held by an opponent . 4 . Firmly held, means the player with the ball must be held firmly enough to stop or retard his progress . 5. Slinging - is the act of catching a player by or around the neck and throwing or attempting to throw him on to the ground . The neck includes the top of the shoulder . 6 . Shepherding is the act of pushing, shouldering or blocking an opponent not in possession of the ball . 7 . A free kick should not be awarded if it will penalise the side offended against . 8 . A team which commences with fewe r than I8 players shall be allowed to complete its numbers at any stage of the match from the players named . 9 . A team cannot take the field unless it has a minimum of 16 registered players . "SOCIAL" July 13th is the night for the progressiv e dinner, as you know there is a limit of 25 couples for this night, get your name in now, or miss out . This is our first attempt at a night of this type, so make it a successful one . The annual dinner will again be held at the Park Royal Motor Inn where popular Peter Feil is "Mine Host" . Romour around that a new voice will be heard in the musical clique ?
This Saturday sees MAL CARRUTHERS play his 50th game with PARKSIDE . In his three years with the club, he has proved himself to be a courageous, never-say-die team man . Often his voice can be heard urging on his team mates . Well done Mal ; now for the "tonne" . OLD BRIGHTON happily congratulate Junior player KIM BURNELL on completing his first 50 games with the club last week, it is certainly a measure of kim's remarkable ability that he has been able to play 50 games in four seasons with the Juniors, and we look forward to seeing him put in many fine games for the Senior teams in the future. Congratulations, Kim, on a fine effort .

OLD TRINITY MAN REACHES CENTURY All at OLD TRINITY joins in congratulating reserves coach GRAEME "TUBBY" ALFORD in playing his 100th game for the club against Kew last week . For, those who may not remember, Tubby used to play in boots some years ago - and sometimes well - but now he mainly plods around in street shoes . Actually some of us saw some typical Alford vigour in the seniors match against Kew last week - a beautiful shirt-front . Well done Tubby .

5 Years Ago Coburg won 'grand final preview' against Ormond by 15 points ; their sparkling handball and fast lose-man game bewildered Ormond for three quarters and at the last change they led by 49 pts . Ormond fought back in the last quarter kicking 6 .5 to 1 .1 . Best were N . Beattie, Warfe and Pearson for victors, and R . Finlayson, McInerney and Cameron for the vanquished . Low scores were the order of the day in windy conditions but two century scorers (Geelong in 'B' Section and Alphington in 'C' Section) went down to St . Bernard's and Tooronga-Malvern . Old Geelong welcomed new reserve player 'Pinkie' Hobiday - showed a lot of promise but a little short of a gallop - (same comment is still valid 5 years later) . John Tudor played his 150th game with Old Paradians to join the select band of post war O .P .s' with 150 games up - Phil McLaughlin, Peter Booth and Brian Weyman . Other events of note - 200 games to Bob Hammond (Hampt. Rov .), Max Pitts ( Bruns .), and 150 to Colin Glover (De La Salle) . 10 Years Ago 'Surprise of the day was Kew's first defeat - at the hands of Brunswick, - 9th on the list in 'C' Section . Final scores were Kew 1 .8 ( 14) to Brunswick 4 .5 (29) with Kew goalless until the last quarter . Team to represent Victoria at the carnival in Adelaide in August was :- M . Caffy (Caul . Gram.), A . Doble, J . Trotman (Ormond), P . Giles ( De La Salle), J . Harmer, T . Lillis (UHSOB), D . Hughes, M. Perry ( Old Scotch), L . Lethlean, G . Jobling (Univ . Blues), K. Jorgensen, D . McQueen (Comm. Bank), R . Knott, J . Robertson (Old Melb .), J . Levin (Coll .), E . Logan. (Ivanhoe), N. McColl (Geelong), D . Meagher, P. Slattery (Old Xav.), G. Mansfield, B . O'Brien (Old Paradians), J . Nelson ( MHSOB), P . Scanlon (Coburg), P . Stokes ( Brunswick), R. Wilson (Univ. Blacks) . Coach was Peter Rhoden (Old Xaverians) while Mr . M . T . Tolliday was manager and Mr . L. S . Zachariah was assistant manager . 25 Years Ago Collegians, battling to make the 'B' Section four, had a great victory over Commonwealth Bank (2nd), kicking 9 .7 to 1 .3 in the third quarter and running out victors 16 .12 ( 108) to 9 .20 (74) . "Coog" Edwards Jud d were s goals), , tDave Kerr an victors whilev Des n Dwyer dhe star Banks' best player . Only undefeated senior team was Caulfield Grammarians- ( D Section) . Leading gbalkickers were "A" Section Nigel Gray (U . Blacks), 42 ; "B" - Fred Heard (Geel), John- Backhouse (MHSOB), 30 ;

^C" - Boyd (Myer), 38 ; "D" - Booth (Moreland), 45 ; and Juniors - Saunder (I'hoe3, 34 . In 'B' section MHSOB (7th) led S .S . Bank (last) by 4 goals at a time . However, Bank kicked 7 goals in the last quarter and kept Melbourne High scoreless . Gordon Miller played his part for S .S .B . at full back by subduing interstate fullforward John Backhouse.
