University Blacks put in a disappointing performance at Ormond last week and lost their place in the four . North Old Boys are back in fourth position but they had to fight hard to beat Caulfield Grammarians . St. Bernard's were beaten again, their late bid for victory against Old Paradians failing by four points . With only five more rounds to be played there are still seven in the running for the right to take part in the finals . Ormond broke away from the Blacks in the second term after an even first quarter to establish a lead of 23 points and although the Blacks edged a little closer in the third quarter Ormond finished strongly to add 5 goals and ran out winners by 44 points . Parade also built up a handy lead in the first half, leading St . Bernard's by 22 •points at the interval . St . Bernard's recovered well in the second half but couldn't quite make it in an exciting finish and went down by 4 points . 'North Old Boys and Caulfield Grammar figured in a high-scoring game, with Caulfield's accurate kicking being a highlight . ' North put on a great burst of 8 goals in the second quarter to level the scores at half=time, and then kicked 3 goals in the last 10 minutes to settle the issue and win by 19 points . They kicked 7 goals altogether in the last term . Reservoir Old Boys and Coburg were also level at the interval after Reservoir kicked 4 goals straight in the second quarter . Reservoir kicked on to a 2-goal lead in the third term but then died out of the game as Coburg took
charge late in this quarter and put on 4 quick goals to be 13 points ahead at the last change . They went right away in the last quarter and won by 35 points . Geelong's poor kicking had the m struggling against University Blues who led by a point at half-time, but Geelong kicked 3 quick goals in a third quarter burst and won by that margin . Old Scotch consolidated their place in the four with a sound 'win over Collegians, the margin being nearly 6 goals . Kew showed their best form for several weeks in running the leaders, Monash Blues, to 8 points and Old Trinity had a struggle against Old Carey before winning by 16 points . Ivanhoe beat Power House by 15 points in a low-scoring game and De La Salle had 34 points to spare over Melbourne High . There were some surprises in C Section where St. Kilda CBC beat Old Haileybury by 21 points and Marcellin went down to Old Brighton by 5 points (6-7 to 7-6) . Brunswick beat Old Xaverians by 15 points and Old Camberwell sur-

prised State Savings Bank who were beaten by 25 points . Fawkner were much too strong for ANZ Bank beating them by nearly 8 goals and AMP Society had just over 7 goals to spare from AJAX .

Today against Parkside, KEN VIPOND plays his fiftieth game for ASSUMPTION O .C. Ken is' the club's number one ruckman and each week he plays a serviceable game . Thanks for your efforts. We look forward to many more games from you .
Melbourne High (9th) shocked Collegians (3rd) with an 8-point win, gained mainly with 4 goals against the wind in the second quarter . M .H .S . O .B . kicked only 2 .10 in the second half but managed to hang on . Nick Rogers became only the second player in Monash Uni's history to play 100 games . A .M .P . farewelled former coach and stalwart supporter, Nick Gelavis, on his departure to Perth. Only undefeated team at this stage was Ormond Juniors with 13 wins and a percentage of 282 .0 . The next three teams University, MHS Old Boys and Monash University were level with 9 wins . 150 games to Peter Conway . (De La Salle) and 100 to Peter Lovett, and Lea Caldwell (0 . Melb .) and Ken Harris, captain-coach of Foots . Tech . Old Brighton (10th), battling to avoid relegation to 'D' Section stayed with Old Melb . (3rd) until the last few minutes to go down 10 .8 (68) to 11 .16 (82) . Best players were Berry; Dalton, Peachey (Old Brighton) and R . Thompson, Hallo, Caldwell (O .M .) . 10 Years Ago Old Paradians, Univ . Blacks and Kew were on top in A, B and C Sections respectively, 3 games ahead of their nearest rivals. E' section captains were P . Marshall (E. Malvern), J . O'Brien (Kooyong), J . Clancy (Univ. Reds), John Adams (North Old Boys), I . Richalt (Comm . Bank), B . Waver (Old Geelong), A . Shostak (AJAX), G . Humphreys (Old Trinity), G . Varlamos (E .S .&A.) . Who captained Old Camberwell ? Ormond kicked 6 .7 in a determined last quarter bid but could not make up the early leeway against Collegians and went down by 2 goals . Levin, Dowling, D . Walduck were best for Collegians while Pert, James and Doble were Ormond's best. 25 Years Ag o A crowd of 3000 or so saw Ormond (2nd) lead University Blacks (top) by 4 points at ; time and then go down in the last quarter when the home side kicked only 1 goal to Blacks' 6 .6 . Leading umpire, of the day, Jim Walsh, was in charge . John Brady, Max Finch and Mick Dexter played outstanding football while Stock, Walker and Rowse were Ormond's best.
MELBOURNE HIGH also congratulate DAVID HARLEY who played his 50th game with the club last Saturday . David has had an interrupted career and it is great to see him- finally achieve this milestone . His antics on and off the field make him a very popular personality around the club, and we all wish him the very best for the future .
200 UP TO OLD HAILEYBURY'S "GOLDEN BEAR" Today PETER BOWRING achieves a great milestone in what can only be described as an already illustrious career - only the second player (after the legendary Andy Home) to reach the 200 mark for OLD HAILEYBURY .
Monash Whites were not troubled by LaTrobe Reds who went down by : 32 points and Thornbury beat Dookie & Long . by, 20 points . In the Juniors, Beverley Hills caused another upset when they beat Coburg by 3 points . Ormond crushed Power House and University ,Blacks beat Old Scotch by 19 points . In Section 2, Parkside overwhelmed Hampton Scouts and Bulleen-Templestowe beat Geelong by a point . Among the Reserves, Reservoir beat Coburg by 13 points, De La Salle had a close call against Melbourne High, winning by only 4 points and St . Kilda CBC beat Old Haileybury by 21 points . Brunswick crushed Old Xaverians, Old Ivanhoe beat Commonwealth Bank by only 7 points, Fawkner beat ANZ Bank by 26 points and Monash Whites suffered their first defeat, going down to LaTrobe Reds by 9 points in a very low-scoring game . All at MELBOURNE HIGH wish to congratulate PETER SCOTT who played his 50th game with the club last Saturday . After coming through the Juniors, Peter has become a regular senior player where his high marking and bulk are great assets . Congratulations Peter and may you play many more games for M .H.S .

CENTURY TO ST . BERNARD'S PLAYER All at ST . BERNARD'S congratulate PETER HOGAN on his 100th club game today. Peter commenced with the under 19's, and was a member of their premiership team in 1969 . Peter had been unable to clinch a permanent place in the top side until this year, when his dedicated and determined play made him a great acquisition whether roving or on the wing . Congratulations on your 100th Peter, and everyone hopes that your courageous play continues for many years to come .

A best and fairest winner, leading goal kicker on numerous occasions (records galore - which he jealously guards) for both club and grade, committeeman and social upheaver!! The BEAR has (in his mature years) taken over full-back where his play has a considerably cohesive effect on the team in general and what could only be described as destructive to the opposition PACE UNLIMITED, topped off by his magnificent kicking . The 200 mark has been delayed by overseas faunts and several serious injuires - highlighted by the dreaded "CHAFE", however, the Bear appears to have years of top football left in him yet . A magnificent effort, you have been a credit to the club and Amateur football in general - as your many friends throughout the competition will testify - congratulations and we look forward to capping the year with a premiership .

UMPIRE'S CORNER By Kevin McKa y "THROUGH THE EYES OF AN UMPIRE " In an age when self images are deemed so important, it must be wondered by many football fans how the scapegoat of the game views himself - as a scapegoat, an unemotional computer, a super machine of physical control, or just another human being doing a lonely job? This is how I see myself as an umpire . Firstly, but less significantly, I see myself as a policeman - not the crushing inhuman "cop" who is as paranoic as the people he apprehends are wayward, but as the policeman on point duty, directing traffic with hands, a grin, a snap and sometimes a whistle . He is not a law unto himself, but is disciplined in the rules and is the first to obey them - an upholder of respect and decency, ready to practice what he preaches . Secondly, I am a teacher . Again I am not representative of an authoritarian state, but as a good instructor by my own ratings, I must bring the pupils up to my own perfection, however short of the mark that may be . After all the only way players learn the rules of football is from, the umpire . Few players have read the book of rules or even possessed a rule book ; nor have they attended any forum specifically on the rules . This is even more true for spectators . How else could anyone know of any rule, except that umpires ask that such and such a rule be followed . A poor umpire, is a poor teacher, causing confusion as to what is correct . Thirdly, and this is the most important aspect of myself image ; I see myself as a servant of others - a paid servant - not as a slave to be abused by those I serve, but with a patience and benignity which is contagious to others. t

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AT AMATEUR GROUNDS The following direction from the Executive Committee, is to be adhered to . "In response to correspondence from clubs, the Executive Committee have reconsidered their decision and withdrawn the directive given at the Delegates' Meeting on Monday, July 1st . "The Executive stress that the responsibility for behaviour of players, officials, supporters and spectators must be accepted by all clubs . Group drinking around the ground by supporters and Reserves players have been the ' cause of many complaints . "The Executive advise that heavy penalties will be imposed on any club found guilty of misconduct in this regard . "

If I can become Mr . Nobody on the field, for it is the players' game, if I bring the game to the point where I go un-noticed, and the thirty six players feel great, if I see to it that every player enjoyed himself, no matter which team won, or whether I enjoyed myself or not, then I am happy that I have fulfilled my part . I am not umpiring for my own enjoyment, but for those who are taking the knocks and giving every ounce of energy for their teams . SOCIAL August 19th is the night of our annua l dinner, again this year it will be held at the Park Royal Motor Inn - Royal Parade, Parkville . On this night we meet and entertain our friends not only from the V .A .F .A . but also from the many umpiring associations in Victoria. For those umpires still trying to fathum the identity of Snow, I promise that health permitting he will be in attendance . The final clue to his identity could well be in one of our ditties . Another Social Reminder - Please keep free the night of the "A Ssection" grand final, as we want a full muster at the dinner dance on that night (Sept . 14th) .

Congratulations to ELSTERNWICK's PAUL MAHONEY on playing his 50th game last week against St . Pats . Paul, a very dangerous rover and half forward when near goals has turned out to be the trump of the Mahoney clan .
