ST . BERNARD'S RETURN TO FORM EASY W IN SENDS NORTH O.B. OUT OF FOUR BLACKS HOME FROM PARADE IN CLOSE GAME By GEORGE McTAGGAR T St. Bernard's showed a return to form last Saturday after a rather lean period and went away from North Old Boys to score by seven goals, knocking North out of the four again . University Blacks returned to the top bracket with a narrow win over Old Paradians in a game that was close throughout . Reservoir Old, Boys showed too much determination for Geelong and romped home by six goals . This lifted them out of the relegation zone, at least temporarily - and dimmed Geelong's final four prospects . North could not match St . Bernard's effective handball and play-on style and after a fairly even first quarter gradually fell behind to be badly beaten by 7 goals, and losing their place in the four into the bargain. It was neck-and-neck all the way at University Oval, where the Blacks scored an exciting 5-point win over Parade . Blacks led by 5 points at quartertime, and went to an 11-point advantage at the interval . Parade crept up to within four points at the last change but the Blacks emerged victors and climbed back into the four . Geelong lost the game in the second quarter when they failed to take advantage of the wind . They were scoreless in the first term but did well to hold Reservoir to 3 goals . Then in the second quarter Reservoir kicked 2 goals against the wind and Geelong managed only two with it, the second coming from a mark taken only seconds before the siren . The honours of the third quarter belonged to Geelong as they kicked 2 goals and held their opponents to a similar number and Reservoir led by 20 points at three-quarter-time, with the game still in the balance .

But heavy rain dampened Geelong's enthusiasm and as the wind swung round the other way Reservoir grabbed the opportunity to make the game safe and kicked 4 goals for the term to score a very comfortable win. Caulfield Grammarians were never really in the picture against Coburg and lost by 100 points, while Ormond turned on power football to completely crush University Blues in a one-sided game . De La Salle beat Kew by 3 points in an exciting finish . De La led all day until Kew got to the front late in the game but De La Salle kicked a goal during a heavy hail storm to win narrowly . Old Scotch also had a narrow win, scoring by 4 points over Ivanhoe to hold their place in the four. Surprise of the day was the ease with which Monash Blues beat Old Trinity, who had been sharing the lead with them . Monash won by nearly 11 goals and have their sights set on a return to the top section next season . Old Carey ran Collegians to 26 points and Melbourne High failed against Power House, going down by more than 6 goals . Three of the top four in C Section were beaten, with St. Kilda CBC slipping from fourth to sixth .

They crashed badly at Alphington, being beaten by 50 points . Leaders, Parkside, were beaten by Assumption, the margin being 15 points and Marcellin's shocking kicking (7-19) ' caused their downfall against Old Melburnians, who won by 7 points . Hampton Rovers were badly beaten by Old Ivanhoe (also 50 points) and dropped from second to third . Old Camberwell beat Old Xaverians by 10 points and Commonwealth Bank won by 5 points from St . Kevin's . Another 50-point defeat was handed out by Fawkner to AMP Society and St . Pat's surprised ANZ Bank . beating Bank by 11 points . St . Bede's remarkably accurate kicking (12-2) gave them an easy win over Elsternwick. LaTrobe Reds pushed North Brunswick to 5 points and Monash Whites went down to Old Mentonians by 29 points. In the Junior Sections, Ormond had only 11 points to spare from University Blacks, Beverley Hills crushed Power House and Parkside kicked 39-31 (265' points) against Caulfield Grammar . Three Reserve section leaders were beaten - Monash Blues' kicking let 'them down in a 2-point defeat by Old Trinity, Hampton Rovers failed by 21 points against Old Ivanhoe and Monash Whites were well beaten by Old Mentonians .

DOUBLE CENTURY TO ALPHINGTONIAN GRAEME McKAY reaches 200 games for ALPHINGTON this week . He has had a full and varied career with the club . Juniors to Seniors a C Section best and fairest, captain a few years ago, been rubbed out, you name it, he has done it . One of the most accurate kicks in the side, either out of bounds on the full, or if he is close to the goals, then he hits the post . He has, at long last, learned to hold his fat mouth shut and only needs an cccasional blast from the coach .

LOOKIN G BAC K By Noel Rtmdle 5 Years Ago Coburg returned to their best form for some weeks when" they cut loose with a devastating 11-goal burst in the third quarter against Collegians, after an even first half in which Collegians led by 3 points at the change . Jay Hanley, Les Beattie and Rod McFarlane (8 goals) were Coburg's stars while Crow, Powell and Burley shone for Collegians. Old Haileybury, 5 goals down at the last change, kicked 9 goals in the final quarter to get up and defeat State Savings Bank by 9 pts . Bowring 3 goals in 3 minutes, and 8 for the game and Dave Eagle were the stars . Big day at Ormond with brothers Finlayson, Brian (150 games) and Bob 100 games) . Terry Corr and Peter James for Footseray Tech . and Doug Fletcher (Caul . Gramm .) played 150th games . Assumption honoured Michael `Bull' Home as their first player to reach 100 while O .G .G . congratulated Mike 'wrong-foot' Gretton-Watson on returning to the game after a broken leg and reaching the century . Wayman Alphington), with 78 goals, was well ahead in the race to 100 goals for the season . 10 Years Ag o Old Xaverians kept their place in the four with a fine win over Melbourne High in which determination and will-to-win played a big part . Des Meagher, Slattery and Tony Capes were best for victors. Alf Keam, with customary open-hearted generosity, was entertaining M .H .S . at a Pleasant Sunday Morning at his baronical residence in Doncaster (About time it was on again, Alf!) . Only undefeated teams at this stage were Uni. Blacks (B Section) and A .N.Z. Bank (Reserve Section 4) . 'A' section umpires were Roberts, Sharpe, Marsden, McLeod and Pearson. 25 Years Ago Best players in Interstate games were Arthur Tonky' Mellors (Brunswick), V . South Aust ., Martin Bedford (Old Scotch V . Tas . in Launceston and Bob Faulkner (Uni . 'Blues) in Hobart . How many remember the umpires of the day? Walsh, Gamble, Concrieff, Caddy, Watson, Connelly, Lonergan, Broderick, Jennings, Wilkins, Ashcroft, Leighton, Cooper, Kingston, Barnett, King, Thornbill, Lindner, McCann, Wenker. No, Hec Roberts was not on the list then !

ANOTHER PAT ON THE BACK We recently published a letter from Kilburn Football and Cricket Club (South Australia) paying tribute to the behaviour of the Victorian team which this club entertained after the Interstate game in Adelaide . Last week the Secretary of the V.A.F .A . (Mr. Jack Fullerton) received a letter from Mr. Colin Johnston (Secretary of the Southern Division of the Tasmanian Amateur Football League) which contained the following paragraph . "Vern O'Byrne, the licensee (of the Russell Hotel, Hobart, where the Victorian team was accommodated), has asked me to pass on to your Executive the enjoyment which it gave him and his wife to be hosts to such a fine, well-behaved football team. He has catered for many football teams over the past couple of seasons but unreservedly votes this team as the greatest." The letter goes on to say that the rain which started on the Friday night prior to the Interstate game continued to the following Thursday morning, and matches scheduled for July 13th were cancelled as the controlling authorities of the grounds would not allow them to be used .

A willowy player "SHAPS" elusiveness and pace have made him a damaging player either on the wing or half-forward flank. With the current state of employment he could be described as a "career" footballer . SANDY "THE PRODICAL" ELLIOTT has returned from Uni . Blues to complete his 50 games with the club. His strength and "pace" are an asset to the Reserves although his "attitude" gives cause for concern at times :

SNOWS` STOR M Done like a dinner we was . No excuses, just a pathetic display . Felt like weepin' when that final hooter went. Well, no good cryin' over spilt milk, I've ad the boys trainin three nights this week . And on Thursday we, that's the selectors and myself, dropped some of the biggest bombshells in the club's 'istory . Gave the Big A to 'alf a dozen jokers who thought they were dead .certs for the rest of the season . When I'm mean, I'm real mean and with a revitalized side today it's away we go. Given' some of the youngsters a go and let some of the former 'heavies trot around this week in the Reserves . For me its been a week on payin' out on people . I've been givin' most people a pain . Even at 'ome I'm not me lovable self .

Must admit though I forgot me troubles last Monday and got with a few friends at a Dinner Dance an' 'ad a pritty good time . Consequently, felt a bit jadded the next day and got to admit stood in the centre of the oval on Toosdey and didn't overwork me tiny body . Well, it's up and at 'em today . Reckon we've got a good chance but after our performances to date I'm not 'olding out` too much 'ope . See ya next week.

Today against Old Haileybury, JOE PAVONE plays his fiftienth game for ASSUMPTION OLD COLLEGIANS . "Rocky" has roved well this year and has played consistently in each of his games . "Rocky" is always to be found winning kicks around the ground and after the game 'Rocky' is still to be found entertaining his guests . Congratulations on your fiftieth game . Congratulations from all at POWER HOUSE to STEVE DANIEL who plays his 50th game with the club today . Whether on the forward flank, wing or roving, "Dasher" is always under notice with his great pace and clever play . He is one of the most talented players at Power House and we wish him all the best today and in future games with the club .

CLEARANCE S ALL CLEARANCES INVOLVING BODIES OTHER THAN THE V.A .F .A. must be forwarded to the secretary, Mr Jack Fullerton, 5 Correa Avenue, Cheltenham, 3192 (phone 93-1545) . SCOREBOARD Clubs are advised that the Scoring Boar d at Elsternwick Park must be operated by responsible club officials at all times . Children must not be allowed in the Scoring Board. DUTIES OF RUNNER S The duty of an Official Runner is to c arry messages from the coach to players and NOT to engage in altercations with players . The runner, in carrying such messages, must take the shortest possible route to the player concerned, and leave the field immediately after delivering the message . CORRECT SCORES ESSENTIAL Clubs are reminded that correct scores must be phoned to the Herald office, otherwise a fine will be incurred . And remember, too, that scores are incomplete without the points - offending clubs will be fined . 100 UP TO ST . KILDA PLAYER Another milestone at ST . KILDA CBO C is reached today when KEVIN SPENCE plays his 100th game for the club . Kevin has been associated with the club for many years, both as a player and a committeeman . He was secretary in 1969 and always prepared to do any other task . Kevin is a player with plenty of ability which some people do not recognise, but despite this he has managed to play many serviceable games for the club . Congratulations Kevin . CENTURYS AT OLD BRIGHTON Today, everyone at OLD BRIGHTON wishes to congratulate JOHN DEVINE on playing his 100th game for the club . John, a best and fairest winner, is one of the greatest players and clubmen ever to represent the club, and his strength and ability have enabled him to repeatedly rate amongst the weekly best . Unfortunately, a bad knee injury forced his premature retirement last year, and this year he was appointed club president. However, John decided to give it another go and he has been playing regularly with the reserves during the second half of the season . Congratulations John, on a terrific fighting performance. All at MARCELLIN O .C. congratulate GREG SHAW on playing his 50th game for the club today. Greg, or-the Snake, as he is commonly refered to for the extravagant arching and twisting movements of his body on the field, started playing in 1972 and won the best first year player award . Having a gigantic leap and great evasiveness, Greg always keeps his cool in any crisis on the field . This year looks like his best for he has been consistently playing match winning football . Best of luck Greg .

UMPIRE' ~ORINER By Kevin McKay "THE STARS ARE FADING " As the season draws to a close, it is appropriate that we present to you today, two of our senior umpires now in the twilight of their careers, together with two of our most promising young brigade . "The oldies" Hoc Roberts and Norm Sutherland have both given over 20 years service to the V .A.F.A . and are two of the most respected whistle blowers of the Umpire's Association . Over the past few seasons, they have greatly assisted by officiating in our Reserve Sections, where their experience and knowledge have been a great help to young and inexperienced players .

They could both be described as nearly the last of the true dedicated umpire, always placing the interests of the V.A .F.A . and football before their own desires. For many years well known in "A Section" they have umpired all finals series in every section of Amateur Football . Norm Sutherland was a "master of position" always being in the right place to see the play . Hee Roberts was more of the speedy type and raced to position when the action required speed . To all young umpires - you would do well to watch and try to emulate Norm and Hec on and off the fiel d This article does not mean we are losing their services, rather I hope it will urge them to keep on running. (Or wave the flag? - Ed . ) When you see these "old reliables" in action over the next few weeks, just remember their wonderful service to Amateur Football.

"THESE STARS ARE SHINING " To take over the whistle from our fading stars we are most fortunate in having so many young men join our ranks and on this page I give you two of our "bright young knights" whose stars are really shining . John Field 20 years of age, a former Melbourne Grammar student, now in his 3rd year of a law course at Melbourne University . A keen golfer and skier, he is always 100% fit and is dedicated to the umpiring c ; reer he has chosen . A "B Section" umpire, John has officiated at nearly 100 games, including the inter college grand final played at Melbourne University last Wednesday . Very popular as treasurer of the Umpire's Association, John is also one of our "smart jet set" immaculately dressed on and off the field. It is to be hoped that the V .A.F.A . can retain the services of John and all the other young umpires for many years ; if we do, then we can be assured the football will be handled by very capable umpires. Graham Allan, 19 years of age, also a

former Melbourne Grammar scholar is another of our up and coming "knights" . A Monash University student in his 2nd year of a Law and Economics course, Graham is another young man with very bright prospects for the future . A top tennis player in the summer months and a not so good golfer, one of the quiet men of the umpires, Graham is the ideal Sportsman to train . He shows a real turn of speed on the track and is a potential Stawell Gift winner, should he ever decide to run for dollars . Another B Section umpire, Graham has umpired approximately 70 games and like John Field is a most respected and likeable member of our Umpire's Association . We have many more young umpires of the calibre of Graham and John nearly ready to step into the shoes of men like Hec and Norm . For some the stars are surely fading, but for the young, they are only starting to shine . A number of our umpires are only out of college, give them a chance and they will prove they have "what it takes" to be top men .
