ORMOND JUST HOME IN THRILLER ONE-POINT WIN OVER, C U Monash hold off Trinity's challenge By GEORGE McTAGGART Ormond scraped home by a point from Coburg in a thrill-packed Second Semi-final, and go into next Saturday's Grand Final . The scores were close throughout a game of very high standard, and Coburg could have won it with the last kick of the match . Monash Blues won their way back into A Section when they beat Old Trinity in the B Section Second Semi-final, but they had some anxious moments as Trinity challenged strongly in the last term . Monash hung on to win by three points . In a great opening quarter which produced no less than 13 goals, Ormond kicked 7-1 to Coburg's 6-1 . The pace was a cracker despite the heavy going, and it hardly seemed to slacken all day . Each side added 4 goals in the second quarter and Ormond were 4 points in front at the interval . There was still nothing in it in a goal-for-goal struggle but Coburg edged to the lead in the third term and turned for home with a 5-point advantage . Ormond regained the lead and in a see-saw last quarter the result was in doubt until after the final siren, as Coburg, 2 points down, had a chance to snatch the game out of Ormond's hands but the kick was worth only a point . Both sides deserve to be congratulated on a fine exhibition of football and if the same two teams meet in the Grand Final a large crowd can be anticipated . This is the second cro w d-pleaser that Ormond and Coburg have turned on this season, for the game at Orm-

ond on June 29th was of a similar nature . That was also a high-scoring affair, which Coburg won by 14 points (22-13 to 19-17). Monash Blues jumped away from Old Trinity and kicked 6 goals in the first term and lead by 27 points . Trinity got a little closer in the second quarter and cut their deficit to 3 goals but Monash looked "home and hosed" when they led by 26 points at the last change . Then that "glorious uncertainty" took over as Monash "died" and Trinity came with a run. They added 4 goals and held Monash to 2 ponits but time ran out and left Trinity trailing by 3 points at the finish . Marcellin gained an early break on Parkside and led by 25 points at quarter-time . Then in a great second quarter which even outdid the Ormond-Coburg first term, Marcellin kicked 8-4 to Parkside's 7-3 to be 32 points to the good at half-time . Marcellin assured themselves of a place in B Section next season when they slammed on 6-9 to a goal in the third quarter and were nearly 12 goals in front at the last change . They won by 82 points .

There was little between Brunswick and Hampton Rovers in the first half when Brunswick led by 11 points, but Brunswick kicked away in the third quarter to establish a commanding 7-goal lead and went on to win by 27 points . Fawkner led AMP Society throughout another high-scoring game to win by almost 7 goals . Old Mentonians broke Monash Whites' hearts in the first quarter when they slammed on 10-6 to 2 goals and coasted home to an easy win . University Blues gained a 17-point lead over Ormond in the first half of the Junior Section game and held on to win by 15 points . There was nothing in the Section 2 game in the first half when Parkside led Geelong by 8 points, but Parkside opened up a break in the third term, adding 5-4 to 1-1 and were winners by just over 6 goals . The "glorious uncertainty" also
figured prominently in the Reserves game between North Old Boys and Ormond . It was a closely contested game for three quarters but halfway through the last term Ormond had gone to a lead of 14 points and looked safe . Then North threw everything into a whirlwind finish and kicked 4 goals in a little over 5 minutes to win by 10 points . Ivanhoe beat Monash Blues by 21 points and St . Kilda CBC ran away from Parkside in the second half to win by 6 goals after trailing by 3 points at the interval . Old Ivanhoe were too strong for Old Xaverians after the first quarter and won by 3 goals although Xav's poor kicking contributed to their defeat . Old Geelong beat Fawkner by more than 6 goals and North Brunswick finished on to beat Monash Whites by 4 points .

BALL BRIEF S BRUNSWICK PLAYER'S CENTURY Congratulations to STEVE CLARKE who played his 100th game for BRUNSWICK last week . Steve who has been with the club for 6 years is a good example of the dedication required in football . For years Steve was an average reserves player but by hard work which displayed itself in the game he made the first 18 last year and hasn't been displaced . Good effort Steve . 100 GAMES TO ANZ BANKER ANDY GILROY-SCOTT played hi s 100th game with ANZ BANK in the first semi-final against AMP Society a fortnight ago . Andy joined the club in 1968 as a raw reserves recruit but quickly adapted his style of play as a good high mark and long accurate kick . Andy played a number of games in the senior side in 1969 and since that time has been a regular member of the senior team . He missed a number of games in 1971 due to national service and again in 1973 when he was out for most of the year following a badly broken arm . Both on and off the field Andy has been a tower of strength and a keen supporter of the club . All from ANZ Bank congratulate Andy for this milestone and wish him the best for many years of football to come . CENTURY AT ROVERLAND Congratulations to NOEL MENNE R who will play his 100th game for HAMPTON ROVERS in today's Grand Final . Noel has made his presence felt both on and off the field with his great displays of tear -through football on the backline . He is a fine team player and an accurate stab pass . Whilst off the field his tear throug h Page 8
tactics in the refreshments side of the game has brought him praise . Keep up the good work Noel as we at Hampton along with Sue look forward to your next 100 . All at OLD MENTONIANS congratulate GARY NORTON and BRUCE HILL on reaching 50 games last Saturday week . As both are only young players it is expected that they will play many more games with the club . Conratulations to PETER EGAN who recently played his 50th game for BRUNSWICK . Peter started off the year badly (a broken arm) but he fought back and was selcted in the 20 for the Second Semi . Congratulations on your 50th and for your worthy finals selection . Congratulations to GRAEME EARLE who will play his 50th game for HAMPTON ROVERS today . Graeme is in his first season with the seniors after graduating from the Juniors . A great ball getter and a beautiful kick . Graeme's future with the club, is looked forward to with great expectations by both supporters and players. A special vote of thanks from all at COBURG to young BRIAN PERKINS he retained his title of Champion Amateur Footballer seller with a sell out effort at last Saturday's 2nd Semi-Final . Brian your efforts throughout the season are much appreciated . A .N. ZEDDARS captain/coach COLIN BOURKE played his 50th game for the club in the Semi-final . This milestone culminates a great year for Colin who was runner-up in the Association best and fairest award and took out the club's best and fairest award for this year. A great inspiration, Colin has been the driving force behind the club for the past three years . Congratulations Col and the club hopes to have your services for many more years to come .
