Foster's LagerA symbol of Australi a for almost a century .

Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U .S.A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

Australia's favourite beer.

We welcome in particular our new Clubs St . Andrew's, St. Leonard's U .C . and W hitefriars O.C. who will compete in the Senior and Reserve grades of F Section and also Eltham U .C . and GTV 9 who will compete in the G Section for 1986 . The advent of G Section is of significance and it is hoped that this venture will be of considerable benefit not only to new Clubs wishing to join the VAFA on a formal basis in the near future but also to existing Clubs in providing a game each week for players where there is an excess of numbers over and above the requirements for Senior, Reserve and Under 19 Sections . 1986 will also be a great test for the VAFA in the representative games which are scheduled during this season . A Carnival to celebrate South Aust--I ralia's 150th Year will take place in Adelaide in late June and early July, and i n addition the VAFA will play its Fifth Annual game in June against the V .F .A . with the score reading "two all" at the present time . We welcome back Mr . John Fisheras coach of the Senior Side and assure him of the complete support of all Members of the Executive and the Association in our bid to reassert our supremacy of recent years in the representative area . The CDEFG Section side will this year meet a team from the Monaro (Canberra) Football League as a curtain raiser to the game against the V .F.A. and the Under 19 VAFA side will also play the V .F .A ., all of these matches being scheduled .for Elsternwick Park on Sunday June 8th . We look forward to a highly successful season in 1986 for Players, Administrators and Supporters of all Member Clubs of the VAFA . John Dillon Presiden t

'ojs Booth Caulfield Grammarians Caused the upset of the day beating Ormond, last year's Premiers, by 40 points . Ormoind kicked 6 .24, 1 .11 with the breeze in a .disastrous third term . But take nothing away from Greg Tootell's Caulfield - they outran, outmarked and outbustled the 'Monds on their own small Gunn Reserve . Caulfield were well served by Stone and Matthews and by Mark McClellanad at ful l back . Watch for Ormond on the rebound ! Scotch's Peter Sherwen atfull forward kicked 5, B Section Premiers Marcellin did not fare as Andy Srriith on the back flank was their best but well and went down to ivanhoe by 39 points at they simply ran out of legs and allowed Bulleenthe Boulevard . Ivanhoe led all day and finished Temp. to add 7 majors in the last quarter . with 7 goals in the final term . Full-forward Dale Boccabella back from Preston got 8 goals . In a thriller at the University, Blues fell in by Marcellin full-forward Gary Petroff kicked 5 but just 3 points overCollegians. Collegians kicked the first 3 goals, but Blues then added 11 goals kicked 5 bu t to none to half time to lead by 54 points . Ted McNamara must have enjoyed his afternoon tea the Magpie half back line of Loton, Taylor and butCollegians hitbackand the Blues stopped to Stewart prevented him getting more a walk with Collegians adding 7 goals in the last opportunities . term .AndyWallis, theshortestcentre ha Ifforward ° Bulleen-Templestowe beat Old Scotch by 42 in the business, kicked 4 goals for the Blues . For points at Yarra Park in a disciplined display of the Lionsnewboy, RickSchoberfrom Richmond football . Merrett (5) and Shallard (4) shared the looked good on Wallis and Bruse Ferguson must goals for the Bullants . New recruitTony Keenan have been relieved to see Ian Herman running from Collingwood held sway in the ruck and around the forward line . Rober Lamb will have Asdagi and Smythe were good running players . to get Frank Henegan to run the boys harder !

The form reversal ofthedaybelonged to North Old Boys. It looked all over at half time with De La more than 5 goals up . I considered popping over to the University'but Brian .Bourke arrived to say Blues were leading comfortably he'd been looking forsome State players . Fortunately I decided to stay and watch with Bernie Sheehy and Shane McGuire and we saw a great revival by North with 9 goals for the third quarter. Mark Hanneberry addressed his players sensibly . Muto at full forward only kicked 2 but he looked dangerous as did Cahill and Morse on the half forward line . For De La Mick Greene tried hard as did Tim Cooke and Phil Karin took some nice grabs for 6 goals . The result - I did not have to eat my words about De La being slow starters, but almost!

-THE WHISPER RETURNS FOR ANOTHER YEAR

Hello to all Amateur fans and good luck for '86 . I had a look at a couple of Amateur games las t week as the A & B Sections kicked off early and was pretty impressed with Caulfield Grammarians and Old brighton . Fancy Peter Grant butter wouldn't melt in his mouth - getting reported . And did you see the score Ormond kicked 6 .24 . Surely they must have treated it as a practice game, although my spies tell me it was a hard physical game for much of the day . When I was there early Phil Mehrten hit the post from the goal square and apparently repeated the effort in the last term . Ormond appeared to have forgotten how to play the Gunn Reserve as they continually blazed away from the non-scoring pocket and more importantly failed to attack down the centre . Other A Section clubs had better be on the look out for the "Fields" . They have all the cocky supporters back and have plenty of tall timber . The move of David Ma tthews to the ruck should have the former full forward offering a vote of thanks to coach Greg Tootell as Matthews appeared to relish the new role . A bright lightfor Monds was the good showing by the third of the McDonald brothers Paul . It was a blow to the home side when he limped off in the second half . State Coach John Fisher would not have come away from the game with many names, although I'll bet he was impressed with the determination of Phil Kingston for Ormond and Alan Nalder for Caulfield . RivalcaptainsRussellBarnesand Chris Stone both played well and look set for good seasons . Ormond will have done some soul searching and are sure to bounce back against the 'Hoe whilstCaulfield will now startfavourites in the big, game at Elsternwick Park tomorrow against Old Scotch . The result which surprised me most was Old Brighton's narrow and exciting one point win over the highly fancied Old Paradians . Gerard Sholley was a very disappointed man, although he would at least have been pleased with the form of Dominic Spillane who appears to have 4

fully recovered after being dogged by inj ury last season . All amateur fans sincerely hope so . Bulleen-Templestowe gave Laurie Aghan the win hedearlywanted overhisold matesatScotch. The Cardinals sorely missed skipper Fergus Kiel and newcomer Stewart Glascott and will need to improve greatly if it is to worry the 'Fields' tomorrow . No rt hO .B . were rightly pleased with theirgood win over De La Salle for whom tragedy struck in the probable loss for the rest of the season in 1986 captain Mick Greene and fellow ruckman Brian Hanrahan . Both players suffered knee injuries, one of many of course for the highly respected Greene . On a brighter note the fine debut of Mario Bria will have eased the pain for some out at Malvern . Alan Salter was naturally delighted with the 'Hoes impressive win over Marcellin . The good early season form of Boccabella, Taylor, McDonaldandLotonsuggestslvanhoe maymake their mark on A section this season . Still its early days and all the coaches are taking it "a match at a time etc" . Uni . Blues flexed some newfound muscle with a surprise win over Collegians, although if you take into account that the Lions have lost about 10 stars from 85, notable Stuart Eason, Jeremy Schmidt, who got 3 for the Bomber's seconds last week, Tregear and English then . Bruce Ferguson can be satisfied after the first round . For the Blues the good news besides the win and acquisition of Geoff Allen, Daryl Gust and the great Michael Yandeil, was the signing of champion Michael Yeo. In tipping a big year for the Blues this year although they'll certainly be well tested by the Bullants today . This is certainly the match of the day and the ruck battle between Yandell and Keenan will be a real highlight. The Bullants have more stars but I'm going to the Blues who are responding well to the Robert Lamb style . Marcellin will unfurl it B Section pennant prior to the clash with De La Salle . It will be the first time Neil Le Lievre will have coached agains t THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986

St. Kilda at home to Therry will be far too accomplished (are they the Southern Saints too?) . Bernie Dunns first B Section win may not arrive until June 14 when they meet the Blacks: What a game that might turn out to be ! Parkside determined to go one better this year will have too many guns for Old Paradians. its not the start O.P .s would have wanted . However that's life and they'll be able to drink winners beer the following week . Old Brighton meet old rivals Old Melburnians at Elsternwick Park . Mark Saran would have been delighted with his charges first up win, but I believe that its Andy Ristoms's turn today and I'm going for O.M .s to score . Next week after I've assessed the form I'll give you the inside into C, D, E, F & G Sections . For the record these are the Whisper's tips . C Section Thomastown, St. Kevins, Old Trinity, Kew and Ajax (Some pretty good games - Don't be surprised if I make the odd blue in C Section ) D Section Ivanhoe, North _Brunswick, Coburg, Monash Blues, Presto n E Section St . Bede's, Bulleen Utd ., Clayton, Peninsula O .B ., Elsternwick . F Section ANZ Bank, O . Essendon, U .H .S .O .B ., Doveton, White Friars G Section Williamstown CYMS, Old Carey, GTV 9 . When it comes to football, the VAFA is a winning combination . When it comes totyres for your car, light truck,or commercia l vehicles there's no match for Beaurepaires, the biggies of the tyre business. The Boys in Blu e from Beaurepaires

De La who have been hit hard by injury . Adversity usually brings out the best in De La but Marcellin will have learnt from last week and at home they should win . At home North should be untroubled against Collegians of whom it is rumoured are already having thoughts of using 1986 as a stay in A Section year . Better sides have been relegated with that sort of thinking . It will be quite a shock for the Lions to be withouta win after two games as they've been great starters in recentseasons . Ormond could not play as poorly again or rather kick as poorly (which is probably the same thing) . However l doubt if they can improve enough to topple Ivanhoe whose practice match and opening round form will give them the 4 points in what will be a'no holds barred' affair. As far as tomorrow goes Old Scotch could start today and Caulfield would still win . The 'Fields' reckon they're a good side and are brimming with confidence . This play on style coupled with their long kicking and marking abilityon every line will see the'local'side to a prettyeasy win . In B Section Fawkner and Old Xaverians, winners last week, meet in the match of the day . The return of Peter Curtain as captain, Richard Armstrong and Mark Summers has lifted the Xavs but Fawkner doesn't lose at home and wont blot its copy book today . Losers St. Bernards and Uni Blacks clash at Keilor and Blacks will be struggling . Their form last week was pathetic and there's a lot of black socks to be pulled up at Parkville . St . Bernards in a canter .

will give you our best price, the best service on tyres, retreads, wheel alignments, batteries and brakes . And it's nice to know that like the Amateur Football Association, we're in almost every suburb . . . and growing fast .

Mr. John Dillon was elected to the executive replacing Mr. Geoff Moore who had resigned . 25 YEARS AGO - 1961 Ian Cleland (in 1986 an "authority on A .B .C . on lawn bowls, trotting and football and anything else he decides he knows a bit about) was appointed V .A .F .A . umpires advisor. Rumour has itthat Ian gotreappointed each yearbecause he sang so well at the Association's Annual Dinner -those smashing Top 40's numbers , 5 YEARS AGO - 198 1 Alex Johnson and John Dillon were elected president and chairman respectively. Life memberManson Russel retired from presidencyafter serving in that role with distinction . Despite a number of applications, no new clubs were admitted . Sherrin footballs were the onlyapproved balls foruse in senior matches ." Poaching" committee of Messrs . Russell, Keam, Hawkins and Nathan set up to try and eradicate problem : Old Xaverians deny having approached Mr . Des Tuddenha m to become a playing member of their club . Executive committee were continuing to explore all possibilities of a permanent headquarters . There had been so much trouble at 1980 finals series with owners bringing their dogs along fora run (including Greg Fisher of Ormond with his Alsation) that the Treasurer suggested to the Executive that owners be charged $1 to bring their dogs into Elsternwick Park . Still, its family football, and what's a family without a Great Dane, or a St . Bernard, or a Doberman Pincer to play with the children ! There was a sensation to start the season when on the Friday night prior to the first game, an investigation which had taken place over several weeks, culminated in U . Blues being relegated from A Section to B Section for season 1981, due to an irregularity in circumstances concerning a permit application for a prominent U . Blues player . AJAX was promoted to A Section . 10 YEARS AGO - 1976 Alf Keam, a man of many talents was the Amateur Footbalier'sA Section tipster for 1976, a new feature with other confident characters . "B" John Bryne, " C" Alex Johnson, "D" Jim Fidge, "E" Syd Whitfield, "F" Keith Findlay, Junior 1 Norm Nugent and yes, they couldn't keep him out, Junior 2, the one and only Peter Nathan . Alf picked Old Trinity to beat U . Blues, 1975 premier coach Gus Mitchell's St . Bernard's to do Peter O'Donohue's (State Coach) U . Blacks, N .O .B . "always trained to the minute" against Monash Blues, Coburg and Reservoir Old Boys "a thriller" - lean to R .O .B .'s and Ormond, eager for a first up win for new coach Ian Cameron to defeat De La Salle "minus Peter Murnane" . 6

You might say "Alfie needed the run" - for the record, Blue annihilated O .T ., Gus did the right thing with a 31 point win, N .O .B . ( L. Murray 6 goals) too good for Monash (best player - R . Booth), Coburg 110 points over R .O .B ., and poor "Cammie", De La swamped Ormond by 45 points . Only two out of five, Alf . A "sour note" to start season - a record 13 players reported for an opening round .

15 YEARS AGO - 197 1 Lou Zachariah, a devoted Amateur Footballer man for years, and a particular enthusiast of Interstate and A .A .F .C . games succeeded Ernest F . Atkins as President, who together with two former secretaries, Jack McCann and Geoff Moore, was appointed " Patron of the Association . " Marcellin and North Brunswick joined the Association . (V .A .F .A . general manager Peter French played on the wing in Marcellin's first game and kicked one goal - N .R .) . Well known names among new coaches were Roger Head (Old Haileyburians), Kevin McLean (Old Ivanhoe), Paddy Walsh (St. Kevin's) and John Bennetti (Ivanhoe). 1970 "A" premiers, Caulfield Grammarians, trailed Collegians by 2 goals at 3/4 time but put on 9 .7 to 0 .4 to win easily . Best for the victors were Atchison ( 5), Clark and Lester and Crow Opie Roach (5) for Collegians . After setting a club record by winning three successive bestand fairest awards Mick Quinlan deserved honour of appointment as captain of old Paradians.

UMPH733%'Z31 CORNER Happy whistling and a warm welcome to all umpires running with the VAFA . This includes all the "oldies"and a greatnumberof'"youngies" ; fromthe umpiring fraternitiesall overMelbourne and even one from interstate . This looms as a big year for the umpires, and many new faces will be seen in our senior panels . Congratulations to Neville Nash and Graham Simpson on their re-appoointment to the advisors positionsalso to the Umpi res Observers Committee . Congrats also to Graham Simpson for his selection as a recipient of a VAFA Certificate of Merit . Big disappointment for this year must be the news, that "old-woman" Ray Woolley is leaving us to go interstate! All the best in your new position Ray . Look forward to more interesting news in this column in the future, plus a few character assassinations . Signed The White Rabbit

"A Man Called Peter", and "The Place Where I Worship". He usually told a couple of jokes of unusual quality before he sang . Other notable events were that Mr. Geoff Moore of Collegians A .F.C. was awarded life membership, and Old Geelong Grammarians, desperate after finishing last in "B" Section, turned to former coach and star Noel Rundle to revitalise them in "C" section as well as be club president! !

Personality Pars TON TO OLD PARADIA N All members, players and supporters of Old Paradians extend Hearty Congratulations to Marchie DiPaolo, on playing his 100th game for the club, on Saturday, 12th April 1986, against Old Brighton . Marchie, who is one of the most reliable players in the back line has contributed a great deal on and off the field for the Club . We wish him every success towards his journey for achieving his next milestone at the club .

THANKS FROM ST . LEONARD'S St . Leonard's Old Collegians F.C. wishes to thank the VAFA for accepting the club into the F Section of the competition in 1986 . The Club and committee wish all the best to the players for the season . Senior players are still required ; contactthe Club Manager, Mr . Graeme Bullusss on 542 5411 or 557 5152 (AH). BEST WISHES TO CHRIS BROW N St . Leonard's Old Collegians F .C . send their regards to Chris Brown, a promising player, who will miss the 1986 season due to two knee operations required after a pre-season training injury . Bad luck Chris .

20 YEARS AGO - 1966 For the second time in four years the Associationhasbeenforcedtovacate itscentralground, the latest blow being the loss of the St . Kilda Cricket Ground . The Association had used Olympic Park for five years after the 1956 Olympic Games but the introduction of a dog racing track decreased the size of the ground and it became too small for Australian Rules . The following clubs did not reappear in 1966 : R .A .A .F., Postal Institute, Bellfield, Cassie (this was a club based on a Greek brotherhood and whose equilvent in South Australia were Al Premiers in the S .A .A .F .L. in 1985), Monash Whites and Kooyong . OTF reports that the third VAFA media/ sponsers luncheon held at The Hilton to launch the 1986 season was an outstanding success . Those present were entertained by former Uni Blacks and Melbourne star, now a highly respected football expert with the ABC, Mr . Doug Heywood .

At the luncheon VAFA marketing chairman and vice-president Mr . Richard Elliott announced that Ansett Airlines and The Australian Wool Corporation would sponser the VFA media award for 1986 . OTF congratulates Ansett Airlines and The Australian Wool Corporation for its generous sponsership .

Whilst on the media did you catch the Amateur segment of World of Sport last Sunday . Well known O .M.s personality and former club secretary Archie Salek has won the job of anchoring the Amateur spot . From reports he did a great job . Well done Arch ! ********* * Still on the media, Inside Football's Tony De Bolfo declared hisallegiance (to Old Paradians) with a reference to the "little green men" in his column last week . Tony is right behind O.P.s and is a big wrap for coach Gerard Sholley.
