Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century. Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war. Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U.S .A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

Australia's favourite beer.

Four teams remain undefeated and four teams are yet to win a game . Let us hope that it is not going to be an uneven competition ! Caulfield Grammarians looked better the longer the game went in Sunday's match at Elsternwick Park, when they accounted for Old Scotch by 41 points . Greg Tootell has former full forward David Matthews playing in the ruck and resting up forward . He is relishing the role. The Fields are quite a big and physically strong side . Berzins looked useful at centre half forward and Norman was creative and quick on the flank . Both kicked 3 goals . Scotch's little men tried hard, Fuller and Hodge in particular but they simply lack marking strength . Big Tom Mason has a lonely job in the ruck . Ivanhoe continued their good form with a 25 point win over Ormond . Dale Boccabella was the star with 11 goals. That makes 19 in just two games! He would have to form part of the match plan of opposition side with form like taht. I wonder if State coach John Fisher is impressed? He might wait to see how he handlesthe pressure in the next few weeks . Tony Balcombe was in good form around the packstoo . Mike McArthur-Allen must be very disappointed with the start so far . But he can be encouraged by the form of Mark McDonald, Martin Tobin, Steve McCooke and Phil Mehrten . What odds Ormond this week ? North Old Boys accounted for a weakened Collegians . Their tackling is very strong and a feature of their game . Curulli on the wing had a fine day and President Steve Hibbert was useful on the half back flank . Top effort that ! For Collegians their bright spot is the form of Rick Schober from Richmond at centre half back and the return of Ian Herman . It looks like a year of team building for Lion's coach Bruce Ferguson . Bulleen-Templestowe are a force to be reckoned with . They showed that with their win ove r University Blues . Laurie Aghan has them playing consistent, solid football . Mal Palmer was easily best on the ground, though as Robert Lamb, coach of the Blues said at quartertime, "No . 8 must have had 14 kicks that quarter" - Andy Smythe is back and running . Vince Asdag i was a busy rover th ough he probably is carrying a pound or two compared with last season . Shallard kicked 7 goals drifting down from the centre half forward flank and taking some nice marks. Shane Gilmore had a keen tussle with Mark Tyquin . Honours about even . "Nails" finished with 6 goals but Shane had the longest kick of the day - well into the centre square at the University ! Blues looked busy especially on the ball and up forward . Their main problem seemed to be lack of height in the backline . But they can rectifiy that with Ashton and Yeo, expected back this week . Yandell held his own with Keenan . Finally, in A Section, De La Salle converted a 10 point deficit at three quarter time into a 6 point victory in the final moments of the game . One of the differences was the kicking of respective full forwards . Marcellin's Petroff was astray but Phil Kerin kicked 9 goals . In B Section only two teams remain undefeated - Parkside and Old Xaverians . Old Xaverians thrashed Fawkner by 110 points but Fawkner had six players reported and sent off and finished the game with 14 players! John Turner here I come !

University Blacks staged a form reversal and beat St . Bernard's, whilstTherry and Old Melburnians opened their accounts . Thisweeksgames inA and B Section are the same as Round 1 . Should be easyto pickthe winners ! A Section : the same winners as on April 12 CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS, IVANHOE, NORTH OLD BOYS, UNIVERSITY BLUESand B U LLE E N-TE M PL E STOW E .

B SEction : the same winners except for two! THERRY v Fawkne r and OLD PARADIANS v Old Brighto n

I like sticking my neck out! Till next week .

PreWews Today 's Games Well what'd ya know . Wins to newcomers GTV-9, Whitefriars and St . Andrews of the new boys and a draw between Willy and the Dragons - hard to pick those draws . Still I did pretty well first up, though you can bet your life I'm never going for ANZ or Commonwealth Bank again (and my mortgage's safe cos I'm with the National! ) St . Leonard's narrowly down last week and perhaps theycan be excused as I doubt that any of those bayside lads would have ever heard of Donvale let alone been there, will open their VAFAaccountattheexpense of ANZ Bankwhilst St . Andrew's can expect another easy win over Fred Cook's F .I .T . 3 .9 Freddy - you'll have to i mproveonthat!OldEssendon nowonthestraight and narrowwill be untroubled byCommonwealth Bank and Uni High can expect two on the trot at the expense of Doveton, who may have been a bit stiff at Latrobe last week . I n the match of the day I'll stick with Whitefriars to topple Latrobe, relying on home ground advantage to see them through . In G Section I think Monash Whites can turn thetablesonGTU-9who'vehad to much publicity lately to concentrate on football and so it's the 'Ashes for me . Old CArey had an encouraging win over Parkside and will be far too good for Eltham who failed to reach the barrier lastweek, and Williamstown at home are charging at the bit to take on Parkside, but I reckon the Devils, hurt by the loss to Old Carey will come away with the points . The two "Wicks" Elstern and Bruns meet on the 'outside'g round in the match of the day in E SEction . Both had good wins to start the season and this game will be no place for weakies . I fancy Elsternwick has recruited better, certainly the return of Maurice Sanelli is a plus, and I'll stick with the Red and Blacks today . Bulleen United who have eyes set firmly on promotion showed its class and the benefit of an extensive recruiting campaign with a narrowwin over a revitalised State Bank . They're unlikely to encounter much opposition from St . Bede's and should usethismatchasapercentagebuilder . Peninsula O .B . will enjoy the surrounds of the Beaurepaire oval and inflict a second defeat on Uni Reds and Williamstown CYMS celebrating

itscentenarythis year -a fantastic achievement will open its account against the OGGS despite having to play at Albert Park . Finally I believe the new look State Bank (glad there's one that can playa bit) will be a bit too talented forClayton and should start its "home" season with a win . Power House, crushed last week by Preston, have more hope today at home against West Brunswick who were surprised by Old Ivanhoe . For no reason really or as they say on T .V . it's a toss up - will it come down heads so Power House for me . Old Ivanhoe for the first time in some years finds itself in the match of the day . Steve Ball has returned from No rth O .B . and his experiencewill be of greatbenefit . I'm notwriting 'Bala' off but Andy Harris may have something this year so I'll stick with Old Ivanhoe . Preston at home will continue on its winning way against Monash Blues whose robust last quarter against Old Mentonians hopefully will ahve shown the studentsthat4quartersarerequi redtowinfootball matches . In other games Coburg, visitors to Allard Park today wi II be too good for North Brunswick and I think Old Mentonians can beat neighbours Heathert on but the selection is not made with much confidence . Winners in Round one MHSOB and Kew meet in the big match at Elsternwick Park . Kew had the call over the Rovers last week, but I wonder about their fitness . To allow an eight goal last term would not have pleased new coach Serge D'Angelo and such a lapse today will be fatal . Melbourne High, it has been reported, believe they can go through 1986 undefeated and they might if they don't have to play Thomastown or Old Trinity to name but two . Their style of game is suited to their tiny little oval as AJAX now know and I shall be interested to see how they handle the 'Park' . Coach Alan Ouaife is a thorough and knowledgeable coach but today I

think the High School will meet its measure at he hands of Kew . and Banyule, both losers lastweek, meet at AJAX Oval 2 and the "Jackers" are odds on here, first round whilst St . Kevin's, delighted with its -in, are unlikely to enjoy the trip to Thomastown and 'Harry's' Bears will win this one . Old Camberwell can expecta notherth rash i ng, thistimefromOidTrinityandinthebattle between traditional rivals Old Haileybu ry and Hampton Rovers - it's the Rovers for me . In today's replay of round 1 events of last week should see Therry emerge victorious against Fawkner, whilst Old Xaverians, whos already reckon they're Premiership favourite . eve n further by will have that gego o n edSt Bernard's . inflicting Yet ano t Old Melburnians can be expected to give St. Kilda CBOC a much tougher game . Certainly the return of Andrew Witts, Rohan Brown and Big Ed Cordner will help . The Saints were disgusted with their effort last Saturday and this should reflect in their play today . I'll bet they suffered during the week! At home St . Kilda bya whisker . I said last week that it's Old Paradians turn today and not only will they win, they'llkick the sweep, and commence what I expect to be a string of victories for the boys from Bundoora or as my UNCLE was heard to often say "the men from Parade" . I doubt that Parkside will have it all thier own way against the Blacks . Well done - you proved me quite wrong but remember you only beat St . Bernard's . The return of Nick Heath will give the home side the edge in the air but as the ball is more often on the ground, the Devils small brigade will come into their own and combine to give John Wise his third win for 86 . De La Salle and adversity - they thrive on one another. What a great performance by De La to get up off the floor last Saturday when you consider they were without - captain Mick Greene, rover'Smacka' Lowe, the dependable and ever reliable Mick Deveson, Bet he couldn't

sleep last night - he's dying for a game today), big ruckman Brian Hanrahan, and so the list goeson . EverreliableGreg McHenry, Phil Kerrin and Paddy Maher played tremendous games and now that they've recaptured the De La spirit I'm tipping them to upset the North apple cart with a narrow win, despite North's unquestionable good form and the handy return of ruckman come forward Peter Wright . Collegians .are in a hole and even atthe Trottwill be hard pressed to beat the Blues who were farfrom disgraced last Saturday. The Blues should play Michael Yeo today today and his mere presence will lift the Blues to its second win . Their forward line is playing well and they are combining as a team, whereas Bruce Ferguson's Lions played like jackals last Saturday . They were second to the ball and perhaps intimidated bytheirsurrounds! They've got some fine players but the cohesion is missing so it's the Blues again for me . Iva nhoeco u!d playMarcellin inTim Naughton's lounge room and still win . The Eaglesare battling in A Section and have no answer to the height and discipline of Alan Salter's Ivanhoe . I've no doubt they'll put up a reasonable show for a half but Ivanhoe will win and that's all that counts . Similarly Bulleen-Temp . will drive another nail into any hopes Old Scotch had of opening its account.AtTimber Ridge where no Scotchman's everbeen LaurieAghan wil l be rubbing his hands with glee as his bullants walk all over the Cardinals . Oh my Ormond, oh my Ormond - what's happened? The 'Monds could not have met Caulfield at a worse time . The Field are tough, talented and tall ; the Monds are slow, disorganized and rattled . Can they draw on that famous pride and character to upset the competition leaders? Can Collingwood? The answer is NO or rather - not this week. Caulfield are going from strength to strength and the pick up of McAllister and Norman, the form of Nalder, Matthews, Stone, Anderson and Cooney and the return of Fish and Berzins will ensure Caulfield open its account at Oval 3, the first of many such wins for the season . By the way how did you go last week ?

At University he has played in the Intervarsity competition in 1984 and 85 and in 1985 was selected in the All Australian I/V side . He has also been awarded a full Blue and a Half Blue by the University . Since joining the Club with the Juniors in 1983 he has become an integral part of the Blackers . To top off Gardy's great day he celebrated his first anniversary with Tracey at the Windsor!!! Well done Gardy . Secondly Tim Marks, another great Blacker, and thirdly Don Robinson are both celebrating their 50 games against Parkside at the Uni Oval today . Tim came to Blacks from Blues in 1982 and since then has consolidated his place in the senior side . He is daid to be distantly related to the refrigerator when it comes to his style of play . Since being a furniture removalist in his earl ierdayMarksie hasnowgraduatedtobecome the Blacks physio and is often seen strapping plenty of ankles . Off the field he and Gardy have been known to have a great game of golf at Barham along with a few other Blackers . Finally Don Robinson started with the Blacks in 83 and is one of the celebrated Blacks ressie stars of the 84 Premiership . Better known as autumn leaves Donny or should I say his helmet is often seen heading in and out of the packs. He slots into almost any position on the ground and would almost play in the ruck except for the disadvantage of his height. Well done fellas and here's looking forward to another 50 . Finally a message for the Whisper . You need to talk to Lorett a about the psychology of Universityfootball . If you think the Blakcsatthe best of times are unpredictable Doyle and Hunto (both ex captains), the only two changes from the week before, could be forgiven for thinking they're worth 15 goals each!! !

100 GAMES UP AT BALACLAV A Two great club men at Balaclava have reached an important milestone at the club Mark "Gumpy" Taylor played his 100th game against North Brunswick last week, and a very serviceable game it was too . Gumpy, and his charming wife Lee, have been ornaments around the club for a few years now . Besides playing many good games in the seniors and reserves, mainly as a backman, Gumpy served as club secretary for two years, his last year being a premiership year . We hope to see Mark and Lee around the club for a few years yet . Rob Morrison plays his 100th game today against Old Ivanhoe, and everyone is looking forward to another strong, steady performance from Rob . "Morro" has played most of his football in defence in the seniors, and his strong marking and straight ahead play have put many forwards out of the game . "Morro's" experience has proved invaluable in the seconds recently, and very rarely does he play an'average' game . All at Balaclava would like to congratulate both Mark and Rob on their great efforts to the club so far, and we wold like to wish both players all the best for the season . 150 GAMES TO U .H .S . RUCKMAN Adrian "Twinge" Hunter first played with Un i High in 1977 . Many great games have followed . On Saturday against Doveton Adrian plays his 150th game . Over the years Adrian has been Senior Captain and twice won our Senior B & F in 1981 and 1984 . Now that the "Wheat King" is happily married and settled in Seddon Heights we all look forward to another fine year on field . Congratulations "Twinge" from the Committee and players of U .H .S .O .B . 50 GAMES AT HEATHERTON Heatherton Football Club congratulates Pa l 'Crazy' Mule on reaching 50 games last Saturday against Coburg . Pal joined Heatherton U/19's in 1982 and since then has been a terrific battler with his endeavour and will to win . Well done Pal and we look forward to you giving your all for the club in your next 50 games . VALE University Blues were saddened to learn o f the untimely passing of long time supporterand lovely lady Mrs . Gwen Bedford . Gwen was mother of Blues wingman Jamie Bedford . To Jamie, his father David and all the Bedford family the Blues extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy at this time of great sadness .

100 GAMES AT AJA X All at Ajax congratulate reserves captain coach Barry Simon who today plays his 100th game . Barry joined Ajax in 1978 for one year and returned in 1981 . Barry a most popular player has been reserves captain coach since 1984 . Barry leads by example and his hard work is now paying dividends with the younger players now benefiting from his knowledge of the game . A most popular player, Barry has won the reserves best and fairest and numerous awards over his playing career . Well done Barry, a fine achievement to a most worthy player . FIFTY UP TO THE SUPPORTERS FAVORITE All at West Brunswick would like to congratulate Thomas Johnstone on reaching a milestone of 50 games today. Thomas - a nuggetty player who has palyed many different positions - joined the club when he was 15 and soon impressed the selectors with his straight through - head down approach and played his first senior game when he was 16 . Tommy is a very jovial chap who likes to spin a yarn whilst enjoying a quietale afterthe gameand we hope thatTommy will be around West Brunswick for a long long time to come .

On Tuesday 20th May : the Sportsman's Night at Noth Melbourne Social Club - Tickets . $20 from any committeeman . 2 . On Saturday June 21st, the Annual Bush Dance at the Richmond Town Hall . OVERSIGHT Due to an oversight the name of Universit y Blues venerable Time-keeper Graeme Coleman was omitted from the Blues best team 1971-85 published in the Amateur Footballer last week .
