A Section Review by Ross Booth
Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century . Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war. Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U .S.A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .
Australia's favourite beer.
Round 3 of A Section football saw four of the five results of Round 1 reversed . University Blues was the only team to win both encounters against Collegians, this time by 36 points . But the Blue will not get carried away because they realise that Collegians was a depleted side last week - more so than usual . Wolff, Greg Parsons, Herman and Irvine were unavailable, the latter two on account of injury . Yandell took control in the ruck and Andy Wallis speared 6 goals from the flank . Marcellin was one of three clubs to have their first win of the season with a 25 point win over Ivanhoe . Niarcellin jumped Ivanhoe in the first quarter with 6 goals and led comfortably at half time by 7 goals . The Eagles lost their wings in the last quarter and Ivanhoe slammed on 5 goals to make their score a little more respectable . Leading goalkicker Dale Baccabella was held to 4 goalsas was Marcellin's Rick Petroff . Ormond reversed their earlier defeat by Caulfield Grammarians with a 32 point win . The Fields trailed by 8 points at half time but halfway through the third term held a 10 point lead but thereafter Ormond added 9 goals to Caulfield's 2 to run out easy winners . Mark McClelland looks the goods at full back for Caulfield and Ma rt in Tobin continues the good work for Ormond . Old Scotch beat Bulleen-Templestowe by 18 points out at'Timber Ridge' - it was blowy out there I'm told . Scotch were more desperate this week and full forward Peter Sherwen capped off a good day with 8 goals . Bulleen-Templestowe virtually kicked themselves outof it with 1-12 in the second quarter to finish with 8-21 . De La Salle staged a remarkable comeback in their final quarter against North Old Boys at East Malvern to win by 5 points. In a low scoring game they added 5 goals in the last term . Mick Deveson was back at centre half back after his suspension in last year's Grand Final . Peter Wright, North's full forward was particularly dangerous with strong overhead marking but eventually the De La backs of Deveson, Ryan, McHenry and Leonard starved he and the other North forwards of the football . No side remains unbeaten - six clubs have won two of their three games . As if picking a winner was not hard enough already ! A Section winners this week: NORTH OLD BOYS v Marcellin (Elsternwick Park) University Blues v DE LA SALL E (Sunday at Elsternwick Park) OLD SCOTCH v Collegians ORMOND v Bulleen-Templestowe IVANHOE v Caulfield Grammarians B Section winners : Fawkner v ST KILDA CBCOC St Bernards v THERRY Parkside v OLD XAVERIAN S Old Brighton v UNIVERSITY BLACKS Old Melburnians v OLD PARADIAN S Don't be too worried if I haven't tipped you - my record is very poor . Can five away sides really win in B Section? they could though Parkside might upset the Old Xaverians in the battle for supremacy in B Section .

Wat a day last Saturday turned out to be . Crikey who would have gone for Old Scotch or Marcellin And what about those " Mondsmen" . With a side boasting more unknowns than ANZ Bank Reserves,. Ormond responded magnificently to the Caulfield challenge and their victory has not only exploded the Caulfield myth of invincibility but has shown the other A Section sides that the 1985 Premiers will again be a force to be reckoned with . De La's win over North also sets the scene for yet another even season, although Collegians are dragging the chain . With all the hard luck stories going around, and I have previously referred to De La's and noted at oval 3 last Saturday Ormond boasted amongst its onlookers such names as Eishold (great to see you're still involved Simon), Alan Naylor, Greg Fisher, Godfrey Russell, Michael Oaten, Andrew Mahrt en, Peter MacDonald, Ross Tonkin, Gary Burke, spare a thought for Collegians who are and were without Geoff Eng lish, Stua rt Eason, Andrew Baum, Andrew Daft, Ian Herman, Jeremy Schmidt, Geoff Parsons, Gary Irvine, Steve Laussen, Greg Tregear and Andrew Ingleton . So it's not suprising that the Lions are down, although not exactly out at present . In B Section St. Bernards despite a red hot go had no answer to Old Xavs who all of a sudden aren't cocky any more . Well that fine with me Old Xavs, but get the message across to your supporters! Parkside with Bradley taking on all the Blacks tall timber and winning continued their unbeaten run and as I confidently predicted P .O .'s had its first taste of success . O .M .'s were disappointing against the Saints and Fawkner won its 6th match on end against Therry . Ajax let me down badly against Banyule, whilst Old Haileybury kicked an incredible 20 goals 2 to beat old rivals Hampton Rovers . Melbourne High proved its a real challenger in C Section with an impressive win over Kew whilst Old Trinity and Thomastown had predictable vict.ories . There were some close games in D Section . No rth Brunswick fell in by a point against Coburg whilst heathe rton hung on to win by 8 points over Old Mentonians . Balaclava emerged as the only unbeaten side in the section . Surprise of the day was Monash's impressive performance in beating Preston out at Preston . Old Geelong were rightly thrilled with its 10 point win over Williamstown CY & Peninsula OB . Elsternwick and Bulleen United all recorde their second win and share top spot in E Section . F Section has really got me bluffed . In the opening game St. Leonards pushed Whitefriars to 8 points and failed by the same margin against ANZ Bank last week . The Bank had suffered a crushing loss to St. Andrews who again had an impressive win and Latrobe who'd got up by 2 points against Doveton fell in a screaming heap against the'Friars. Doveton went down again, to Uni High who now share top posi with Old Essendonand newcomers St .Andrewsand Whitefriars. It's pretty topsy-turvey in the middly order, reminds you a bit of the Australian XI . 4
Eltham O .C . playing its first game went down to Old Carey and Monash Whites reversed the opening rounds loss to GTV9 who blamed the Dire Straits concert for its loss . The Under 19 comp is nowsettled with Section 3 now consisting of 8 teams due to the loss of Elsternwick and more recently St. Kevins . Long standing rivals Old Paradians and St . Kilda CBOC share the lead in Zone 3 . And now to today . There's a back to back A Section matches at "The Park" . On Sautrday North O.B . take on Marcellin who will be lifted by its win over Ivanhoe. I gave the young eagles no hope last week but their strict attention to coach Neil LeLievre's instructions and improved concentration were significant in the win . North on the other hand suffered its first loss of the season, in a game in which they held sway for most of the day . I'll bet Steve Hibbe rt is still cursing himself for playing on in the vital last minutes, a decision which may have cost North the game . The return of Peter Wright has ensured that North will take a power of beating in the ruck and has certainly been welcomed by rovers Darren Edwards and Gerard Brown . Luke Moore is an excellent link man whilst the experienced Jerome Griffin and Paul Considine have both begun the year in fine style . Marcellin will surprise North with its pace and tenacity but they dont seem to be able to play 4 quarters, they have fine palyers in skipper Andy Cullinan, ruck rover Chris Slattery, winger Luke Getson and the close checking Carafa brothers . However their record against No rt h is abysmal whether at home, abroad or Elsternwick Park and so I'm sticking with North . On Sunday fierce rivals of the early 80's Uni Blacks and De La Salle meet yet again at Elsternwick Park . Blues have a record of winning home and away matches but not Grand Finals . Tomorrow should see that scenario continue . Blues have recruited well . Giant ruckman MikeYondell will provide the Blues small brigade of Gust, Lam and Allen with first use of the ball and the good form of Tyquin, Simon MaCaulay, Bernie Angel and Rob Polkinghorne will enable the Blues to kick a winning score . Still you'd be a dill to discount De La who enjoy playing at Elsternwick . Coach John Pollard is experimenting with his side, and endeavouring to play as many players as possible in a variety of positions . I'll bet Mike Deveson was surprised when he was moved to centre half forward - the move worked as Devo got two vital goals in the last quarter, but for mine he's a defender and a damn good one . It will be close but the Blues will win .
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986
The Old Scotch and Collegians match will ~,IIow the Cardinals its second win . I expect an mproved effort from the Lions but Scotch it has been said thrive on confidence and theat was certainly restored after is fine showing at Timber Ridge last week . Scotch matched it with Caulfield for 3 quarters a fortnight ago and have the form to keep Collegians at the bottom of A Section . Ormond at home for the third week in four have a huge task ahead in BulleenTemplestowe . Poor kicking cost the Bullants a perfect 1986 record and they're sure to be fixed up for this match . Laurie Aghon would just love to knock Ormond off on its own ground and certainly he has the side to do so. Despite the truly magnificent effort by Ormond last Saturday they just do not have the manpower or experience to hold the Bullants for a full game . Ivanhoe will bounce back after its loss to Marcellin by accounting for Caulfield who will be rightback to earth by5 p.m . tonight. The'Hoe are one of the few sies to be able to match Caulfield for height and the Stevenson Boccabella clash ill be a real highlight . The clash between Nalder and either Loton or Flynn will be another tussle that will be well worth watching and the outcome will do much to decide this match . I'm confident Ivanhoe can win as they have better rovers, flankers and will welcome the debut of Fatui Ataata . Parkside take on Old Xaverians in the B Section match of the day. Section leadership is at stake and at Pitcher Park the Devils who will again miss Evans and Yoksich should win narrowly. This will be another test of character of Old Xavs who have measured up very well to date . They must be delighted with Nick Wilton's form and theirgoal to goal line isasgood as any in the competition . Greetham, Wilton, Doyle, Armstrong and Metzner is more than useful but apart from the younger Cu rtain brothers Peter and Paul as well as Nick Bourke and Mark Summers the Xavs taper off around the sides and this is where the more even Parkside side will call the tune . I do admit that played at Swan St ., I'd have gone for the Xavs but winning at Pitcher Park is one of Amateur Football's toughest challenges and so I'm with Parkside . St . Bernards are in a hole and will sink deeper todayaftera visit from Therry who disappointed me last week despite their poor record against Fawkner. Fawkner at home will know they've been playing against St. Kilda who apart from a slup up against Therry have been impressive enough . In what will be a tight game St. Kilda may have enough depth to record a very handy win . I expect the Blacks to return to the winning list against Old Brighton at Beach Road and Old Paradians will continue on their winning way against Old Melburnians whose effort last Saturday was most disappointing . Although Kew let me down last week MHSOB they were really only in it for the first half) they let themselves and coach Serge D'Angelo down in the second with a most undisciplined effort . The High School have a pretty useful side at presentand Club President Frank McLardie tol d THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986
VAFA General Manager Peter French to tell me that they don't reckon they're God's gift to C Section . OK Frank but you get the message across to all your supporters . Actually from the barrage I've copped this week what a game Old Xavs. and MHSOB would be . Ah well maybe next season . Today Banyule take on the High School and despite its success last week against the'Jackers' I must go for Melbourne High who, and all jokes aside, are a pretty useful outfit . St. Kevin at home will win againsta very disappointing AJAX and Hampton Rovers will open itsaccountover a jaded Old Camberwell. In the match of the day Old Trinity's pace and running game and match winners will prove too much for Thomastown . I like West Brunswick at home over Preston who received a big shock from Monash last week . The 'Ashes' are now in the match of the day against Heathe rton and on the big UN I oval I reckon they'll win . Coburg was another to be surprised last week and they're sure to be in the right mood to topple Old Ivanhoe . Long standing rivals Old Mentonians and North Brunswick meet at Keysborough . Last Saturday North had a narrow win and Old Mentonians had a narrow loss . This Saturdaythe position will be reversed . In the remaining match 'Bala' will thrash Power House who are becoming desperate for a win . Brunswick should return to the winning list at the expense of Uni Reds who will have to adjust to playing on Saturday and Clayton will be untroubledinscoringoverSt .Bede's.OldGeelong had a confidence booster last Saturday, but will find State Bank afargreater hurdlethan Williamstown and will have to be satisfied with second place . Peninsula O .B . have had a much better start to 1986 than I thought they would although I suspect that the Pirates are equally surprised . They'll make it 3 in a row by beating the Seagulls today. In the match of the round in E Section I'll stick with Bulleen United at home against Elsternwick . This could be an early guide to Premiership hopes and is bound to be a high standard and hard fought encounter . ANZ Bank - well done - I'm prepared to eat my words on this occasion but remember "one swallow doesn't make a summer" . Actually I'm far from convinced yet and as Whitefriars have taken all before them I believe they'll enjoy the Albert Park environment and come away with the 4 points . F.I .T . - this is your big chance . St . Leonard's don't know how to win so you should be able to do an ANZ and grab a victory today . Commonwealth Bankare gone and St .Andrew's who have had a dream run and could well move to the top of the ladder after today's big win . In the other matches visitors Old Essendon and Uni High will have the call over Doveton and Latrobe - Don't let the wheels fall off yet Peter O'Donohue ! G Section winners will be Old CArey, GTV-9 and Parksidewhilstin the U .19's I'll goforMarcellin Ormond, Old Xavs ., De La and Melbourne High in Section 1, O .M .'s, St . Bernard's . Thomastown , 5
Uni Blacks and Monash in Section 2 and Ivanhoe, So till next week the Whisper's FOOTY TIP is the Rovers, Williamstown and St . Kilda in Section "Forwards play in front" (Last week's which was 3 . left out was "Never handball to a stationery team mate") .

Final scores were Collegians 8 .13 .61, Beaconsfield 9 .8 .62 . After starting miserably and trailing by 6 goals at half-time, the Lions came home with a wet sail to almost steal the game . Mackenzie, ex Old Haileybury champion Peter Mason and M . Cottrell . Goalkickers were A. MacKenzie 3 goals, P . Mason 2, and one apiece to P . Bedford, T. Smith and J . Burless . UTF wa recently sent a copy of an address delivered by V .A .F .A . Executive Chairman Jim Hawkins at the Forums held for Club Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers, prior to the season . We're happy to reprint it here for the benefit of all Clubs and Amateur Football fans . "Over the last several years a variety of trends has started to appear in Junior Football and Amateur Football has not been unaffected . The main trend has been the dropping off of players wishing to join clubs . The reasons for this are many but mainly : 1 . Availability of other sporting opportunities . 2 . Individual mobility enabling sports to be enjoyed which entail long distance travelling . 3 . Encouragement by parents and peer groups not to be involved in body-contact sports . 4 . Lack of football coaching in schools, due to large numbers of female teachers, and concentration on so-called passive recreation . This mention of passive recreation raises th e question of the changing attitudes of local councils who control most football grounds . Members of some councils are increasingly being aligned with those who think that ovals should be open space at all times, and their attitude to football and cricket is such that many areas are losing ovals which are being changed to exercise runs etc . I particularly note the attitude of the M .C .C . to its ovals especially at Royal Park . You Executive has, over the past few years, deliberately followed a policy of increasing sponsorship with the aim of lowering the cost of competing for the Clubs . Also we have endeavoured to upgrade Elsternwick Park without causing financial strain . To this end we have been very successful, and I bring to your notice that affiliation fees have not been raised for three years, and the the Property Division has kept costs to a minimum, and returned half of its profits to the clubs which have supported it . I am sure you will agree that these results are admirable, but the time has come for everyon e
8
i assure you of the complete co-operation of he Executive in your endeavours . We are :ailable at any time and should you wish it, ,o ~ve will be happy to send representatives to your nieetings. V .A .F .A . Marketing ManagerTonyO'Callaghan reports that the following Clubs have not yet suppl i ed a sample Club guernsey and pair of socks . ANZ BANK, BALACLAVA, BULLEEN UNITED . CAULFIELD GRAMMAR, COBURG,
ELSTERNWICK, FAWKNER, F .I .T., HEATHERTON,IVANHOE,KE',N,MARCELLIN, M .H .S .O .B ., NORTH O .B ., OLD CAMBERWELL, OLD HAILEYBURY, OLD IVANHOE, OLD MENTONIANS, ORMOND, POWER HOUSE, ST . ANDREW'S, ST . BERNARD'S, ST. KILDA and WEST BRUNSWICK are the clubs at fault and OTF is happy to provide the Marketing Committee with space in which to spur the Clubs onto greater efforts .
to upgrade their situation and start working for the future advance of Amateur Football . If Clubs, many of which have a long and proud history in the Association, are to continue in the manner to which they have become accustomed, I suggest that they need to take some action on the following points : 1 . Encourage junior players . It is not without some significance that the top twenty-five Clubs over the last few years have all had under-age teams, often down as far as Under 12, associated with them . I am fully aware that this is not possible in all cases, but I suggest that forming an affiliation with local schools - both High and Primary - in the form of offering coaching sessions, orarranging inter-school matches on your ovals, or offering small trophies for school matches, can only be advantageous . I also believe that Under 19 teamsare essential if a club wishes to improve and provide itself with a goo supply of players . It is a well attestd fact that more good senior players come from Under 19 sides than from Reserves, and although none knows betterthan myself the problems associated with Under 19 teams, the advantages are so great that all efforts to field a team should be made . 2 . Upgrade Facilitie s Because we have managed to maintain costs to the Clubs, I feel that some have inadvertedly taken advantage of this by deciding that their fund raising need not be at the rate of former years taking inflation into account . What we should be doing is providing improved facilities for players, e .g . better lighting - better showers - facilities for light meals child minding, etc . To this end Clubs should endeavour to have excellent rapport with their ground controllers, be they local councils or school authorities, or bodies such as the Albert Park Turst . Most of these are happy to co-operate with sporting bodies, as long as the body is prepared to supply part of the cost . This arrangement also helps security of tenure . 3 . Local Participatio n Endeavour to become part of the local scene . Use your local papers for weekly reports, and your local shopkeepers for support and advertising . Make your Club the best run and best known and bestdisciplined in yourarea, so that young players will be attracted to what you have of offer. Provide helpers for Red Cross or similar door-knocks, and show that you Club is a viable and respectable local identity . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986

Steve's highlights since joining amateur ranks are :- making "A" section in 1985, 1 under 19 Grand Final and "E" section Grand Final . Steve also umpired 1 V .F .A . game - MordiaIloc v Dandenong, with the swapping of V .F .A . and V .A .F .A . umpires for one round of matches .

During one "A" Seciton match 2 weeks ago, it was found that one "senior" umpire when going to blow his whistle discovered it was not on his fingers but well imbedded in the ground . Just as well "the" umpire carried his spare . Well done, Pres ! This column writer believes if you have a knee operation you would at least remember which knee . A "senior" umpire whilst chatting with a fewof hiscolleagues and reminising a bitdecided to show all his scar - only to flash the wrong leg .
It seems the same standard umpires have between district and school clubs has reached the tribunal . Goran Yoksich (Parkside) B Grade best and fairest winner was the only player reported in an all in brawl (started by the opposition) . His sentence . . . 4 weeks (never ever been reported) . Peter Grant (Old Brighton) reported for striking . . . his sentence reprimanded . It makes you think what standards apply .

Personality Pa DEAR WHISPE R Every where I went on Saturday selling "The Footballer" Old Xaverian supporters asked me if I wrote up the game for B grade . they were disappointed with the suggestion that we had an arrogant attitude to other B grade sides . Jack Turner our coach has done so much to suggest to players this is not our policy . We play each side and each game as it come . 1ry+e will always do our best, BRIAN LUGAR OLD HAILEYBURIAN S This week sees three Old Haileyburians' players reach playing milestones - Jeff "Sticks" Robertson (100 games), John Kingsley (50 games) and Bernie Ladds (50 games) . These three stalwarts are all members of the renegade group, "The Dingley Boys", who form such a vital part of the Bloods . Jeff Robertson's career stretches back to 1979 . The following year the fair-haired, rangy forward led the goalkicking for the Junior Section 1 Premiership team and played a great ame in the 1 point grand final win . The big fella has kicked over 200 goals for the club and onl y

needs a handful more to take over the mantle of third-highest goal scorer from his old coach "Stick" Langford-Jones . "Sticks now wears Langa's old number 4 . Three times he has bagged eight goals or more in a 1 st XVI I I match ; with his reach in marking and sure-footed kicking he can be a most dangerous forward . "Sticks" always leans into the wind when kicking for goal to stop himself being blown over. Chasing is not the most famous part of his game, however. "The Dude" is also the trendsetter in checked flannel shirt fashion-wear . Just down the road lives John Kingsley, affectionately known as -J K" or, more recently, the "Junk Yard Dog". Wrestlemania! This year a big pre-season has seen virtually a new player (even if "Sontha" will never forgive him for his back yard - sometimes the Dog goes Pig) and the dark, moustachioed ex-Zorba now holds down centre half-back as the form player in the club . "JK" is another Launceston veteran while "Sticks" had a "Divine" time JK found that there was 'no sympathy in this world' at 5 a .m . The way things are going he's going to find that big left foot will be mighty sore at the end of the season with all the kicks that he's getting . Bernie Ladds joined the Bloods in 1982, one year before "JK" . A ruckman in the mould of Barry Round, this year's reserves vice-captain is all heart and one of the greatclubmen around the place . "Laddsy's" 50 comes up today despite a number of appearances in the socials . The only thing he loves even remotely as much as the OHAFC is his favorite Carlton team . Having mates such as the Taylor boys can cause problems when their likeing for the Bombers surfaces . However, things look on the improe and Laddsy may soon be able to get some of his own back. A great loyalist, he should be around for years to come . Te VAFA requires the assistance of one or more retired persons with some research . It is envisaged that a couple of hours a week would suffuce and those interested should contact VAFA General Manager, Peter French, o n 531 5445 2

Pers®nali#y Pars OLD MENTONIANS 25 0 The committee, players and supporters of Old Mentonians are very proud to announce that Gary Morton plays his 250th game with the club today. Gary who is club captain for the 8th time has enjoyed an illustrious career which include such achievements as winner of the competition best and fairest twice, runner up twice, club best and fairest 8 times, and represented the Victorian Amateur team 3 times . For the club he has also won best team player, leading goalkicker and hastherefore been on stage regularlyon presentation nights . Off the field Gary has served as committeeman, social chairman and treasurer . More recently he's been in charge of organizing the annual golf day and trip away . Needless to day Gary is a Life Member of the club . We are also happy to announce that Gary finally married Jenny last year and theyare expecting theirfirst young Old Mentonian around June or July to add to the club's kindergarten group . Although Gary isn't known for his pace, he certainly sets the standard for his strong marking ability and leadership . The only other thing to say is what a pity North Brunswick have to play us at home on the day Gary Morton plays his 250th game . PULLED HAMSTRIN G In the second round F Section, New team Whitefriars O .C . continued to impress with two good wins in both senior and reserves over Latrobe Uni . Unfortunately their captain Stephen Huntley pulled a hamstring in the dying minutes of the main game in which they won by 92 points . 50 GAMES AT ST .KILDA CBOC Congratulations to Tony Riddell who plays his 50th game for St . Kilda CBOC today . Tony started his football with the U/19's in 1983 where his prolific goal kicking and high marking ability gained him promotion to the senior side in 1984 . A brilliant centre-half forward Tony is an integral part of our senior side, and our aim for A grade . Well done Tony, all at St .Kilda CBOC look forward to your next 50 .
ST. ANDREW S Today sees Chris Alysandratos play his 50th game for St . Andrews . Chris has taken 5 season to make this mile stone, but overthe last 2 season has proven to be one of the most reliable long kicking defenders . Keep up the good work Chris ! Round 3 will see Doug Kolbe another St . Andrews backman paly his 100th game . Doug came to St. Andrews through a club merger in 1980and has proved hisvalue in many positions . Undoubtedly Doug has many match winning performances left to perform for the royal blue and gold . St. Andrews Football club committee and members extend their congratulations to Howard James on playing his 250th game for the club this Saturday. Howard who holds the club record for most games played for St . Andrews has played in both club senior premierships in 1977 and 1980, and is a recognised goal sneak in the reserves team . 50 GAMES AT ELSTERNWICK Congratulations to Kevin Forster on playing his 50th game for Elsternwick . Kevin is a local boy who first turned up at the club on his bike looking for a kick of the footy! He immediately impressed everyone with his skills and was soon playing in the reserves and later in the seniors . A skillful roverand goal sneak, Kevin was runnerup in the Reserves Best and Fairest in 1985 . With hard workand further improvement, Kevin will establish himself as a regular senior player . Congratulations from all at Elsternwick to Kevin Forster on reaching 50 games . WHISPER TO EAT HIS WORDS All at ANZ Bank would like to rub it in to "The Whisper", for his rather outlandish statement last week in stating he will never pick us to win again, well we did win, again tarnishing his reputation as a tipster of note . (Just as well his money is with the National) . Congratulations to "Tony" and the boys, a job well done .
