Three teams share the lead in A Section but no team stands out at this early stage . North Old Boys beat Marcellin at Elsternwick Park by 34 points . The game never rose above the ordinaryand Marcellin was notvery impressive . North have lost playing-coach Mark Hannaberyforthe season with a knee injury. In fact George Moloney took charge lastweekas Mark was in hospital . Frank Muto is also sidelined with knee trouble . North are helped by being able to ruck big Peter Wright and Paul Considine from full forward - each got three goals . Luke Morse scored five from the flank but the opposition was not strong . Petroff is Marcellin's bright spot - a good mark but he seems to waste opportunities for a big tally . Ivanhoe showed continued good form with a 26 point win over Caulfield Grammarians . From all accounts itwasa good close game and Caulfield lost no respect in going down . Boccabella got another 6 for a season tally of 29 but Loton on the back flank and Dominic Howard in the ruck were key players in that vital last quarter . Caulfield will do allright this year - their good players are playing well such as Kanis and Nalder . Ormond are bouncing back now and testimony to that was their 56 point win over BulleenTemplestowe . They would have had the game sewn up by halftime were it not for bad kicking . With three targets up forward now - Hill, Mark McDonald and Tonkin - Ormond is starting to look formidable . Bulleen-Templestowe seem to be an enigma ! The surprise win of the round was Collegians 11 point win over Old Scotch, a good one for the competition no doubt - not so good for the Cardinals . But suffice to say they gave Collegians too big a start and could not overhaul them even with their whirlwind finish . Sherwen kicked another 6 and the fast leading Roberts booted 8 for the Lions . Nice to see the Herman brothers playing alongside one another ! De La Salle moved into third place with their 3 goal win over University Blues on Sunday at Elsternwick Park . De La always looked in control though Blues made a game comeback in the final term through Roger Curnow and even hit the front . In the end Blues had no counter for Mick Deveson whether in attack or defence and the strong marking Phil Kerin atfull forward . Polkinghorne was most impressive for the Blues . It was a better game than on Saturday but I did not think I was watching two grand finalists . Good news for Blues is that Mclnnes is back, but sadly Mike Yeo is unlikely to play . Mick Greene will soon be back for De La Salle . My tippings improving . In A Section, 4 out of 5 last week . This week : University Blues v NORTH OLD BOYS Old Scotch v DE LA SALL E ORMOND v Collegians (Elsternwick Park) IVANHOE v Bulleen-Templestowe CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS v Marcellin

vOld Trinity continues to set the pace in C Section (Question : Who was the last team to beat Old Trinity - Where and what was the ,nargin?) and has ambitions of back to back championship years . It certainly put paid to the Thomastown challenge with a 47 point win in an a~•1e inspiring display. From D to G Section it is not quite so even except perhaps in D where only Power House have not yet won a match, a fact of which Rick Sykes is onlytoo well aware and atthe otherend Balaclava completed a hat trick of 1986 wins . Peninsula and Bulleen United remain the only unbeaten sides in E Section where Uni Reds have been left languishing at the bottom . New comers 'Jdhitefriarsshare the lead with Old Essendon and UHSOB in F Section where Doveton ~r hat's happened to last season's great improvers?) and St . Leonards have been left alone without victory . In G Section Old Carey who are regrouping are at least winning and even at this stage look the side to beat . GTV9 consolidated its place in the 4 with an exciting 3 pointwin overa luckless Eltham who are not far away from an inaugural Amateur victory . So much for winners and losers last week . With the season now in fall swing there are a couple of great games today . At Elsternwick Park two of last seasons finalists - Ormond and Collegians - do battle in a replay of last years second-semi final . If you hadn't seen a game since then you could be forgiven for not recognising either side this season apart from their uniforms of course . Injury, retirementand transfers to V .F .L . ranks have depleted both Clubs and on top of all that Ormond will be withoutthe r,4cDonald brothers - David, Mark and Paul :' ho are all unavailable for the next 3 weeks . With Craig Tonkin and Steve McCooke also out injured I wonder if Ormond will have enough players . I also wonder what coach Mike McArthur-Allen thinksabout losing two key position players and a very promising young ruckman. It will be a great coaching feat if he can get Ormond up today and I take my hat off to him for last weeks effort. How did they beat BulleenTemplestowe of whom I'll have more to say later? Today though the Lions will roar . A surprise selection you are all saying - maybe, but their :vin last week has set the pattern and the return of Ian Herman and Gary Irvine who will both relish playing at Elsternwick Park and the deceptive forward play of Roberts will I believe give Collegians the edge . Not only do Collegians have something to prove to A Section Amateur football followers, theyalso have a score to settle ;>ith Ormond and today is the perfect opportunity to do it! THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986

Ivanhoe play Bulleen-Templestowe at the Boulevard and startfirm favourites . Apartfrom a slip at Marcellin a fortnight ago the 'Hoes have not put a foot wrong and despite all the hard training the the Bullant's coach Laurie Aghan will have employed during the week, his hotand cold side will falter again . Ivanhoe are big, strong and aggressive . They have a lot more discipline than previous Ivanhoe teams and above all are teaming brilliantly . Theirs is a very even team whereas Bulleen often expect their better known champions to do all the work . Ruckman Tony Keenan is having a fine year and will need to play right up to form todayasAlan Salter hasany number of big men to play on him . Young Dominic Howard from Old Ivanhoe U/19's has been a great find and although lacking in experience his enthusiasm and great spring will worry the Bulleen men . If it doesn't Salter has Chris Taylor or Dale Boccabella to swing into the ruck and this versatility well see Ivanhoe .to itsfourth win . Bulleen-Templestowe reallyneed this win if it is to show the Ormond and De La's that it is serious about 1986 . Marcellin travel to Albert Park to playCaulfield in a replay of last years B Section Grand Final . Of the 2 sides, Caulfield has shown it has adapted to the higher standard, despite successivelosses . As Caulfield is unlikely to forget that it threw away last year's premieaship they'll really be out to even up today, and on their own deplorable oval in front of a home crowd not only seeking revenge, but a third win, they will win and win well . Marcellin appear too small for A Section and will be surprised by Caulfield's tougher approach to winning the loose ball . In spite of Andy Cullinan's good form he will have his hands full with either Cooney, Matthews, Berzins or Anderson . With Kanis running into a bit of form and Nalder having an outstanding year Marcellin justdo not have the players to go with Caulfield's stars . Uni Blues take on North at the Uni and although carried by old stagers - roger Curnow, Mark Tyquin and Simn Macaulay - in the main they are unlikely to worry North . Coach Robert Lamb must have felt his side was a chance at three quarter time last Sunday against De La . He had youngsters Polkinghorne, Pyke and Yandell all playing well . Howeverthe Bluesfell into the old Uni ways of kick and mark and allowed De La to run right over them - the key word here being run . North are having a good year and the return of Peter Wright is ample compensation for the most unfortunate loss of Captain /Coach Mark Hannabery who will be sidelined for the rest of the year . They tell me George Molony is relishing the task . No North have too many players in form to drop a match to the Blues . 5

Old Scotch fell for the trap last week of taking Collegians lightly and by the time the woke up the game had gone . I'm absolutely sure they wont take De La lightly - as they haven't beaten the Blue and Golds forat least 5 years . De La will win because the whole team plays to instructions that have been drummed into.the physce of all players and started with Bernie Sheehy back in the mid 70's . They have the Premierships to prove that discipline, backing-up constructive handball, running and determination wins Amateur football . Sure they've had some stars but their ordinary players are better year in year out and match in match out because theyall play as and for the team . Scotch you've got no hope ! There are two battles between old and respected rivals in B Section that will be well worth seeing . O .M .'s play the Blacks at Cordner Oval and Old Paradians play St . Kilda CBC at Bundoora . I expect the Blacks tall timber to give them the edge over O .M .'s whilst Old Paradians are well and truly on the march and at home will be too good forthe Saints whose form is patchy . Other winners Parkside on the rebound, Fawkner and Old Xaverians . In C Section Melbourne High will continue on its winning way despite Old Haileyburys recent good showing and home ground advantage . Likewise Old Trinity will beat Ajax and Banyule is the selection against St . Kevins . Kew should return to the winning list against an out of fomr Old Camberwell and Thomastown despite the long journey to Hampton will come away with the 4 points .

D Section winners will be Balaclava again Coburg, Old Mentonians, Monash Blues and Preston should avenge last years loss by beating Heatherton at Heatherton . Peninsula O .B . ill find out how good they really are today and the game with State Bank is the match of the day in E Section . The Bank have a fine side this year and despite a first up loss at Bulleen is playing well . I'd be a fool to overlook their efforts to date and dont believe the journey to Mt . Eliza will be a problem . Its the "Tigers today over the "Pirates"! Other winners will be Bulleen United, Elsternwick to bounce back Old Geelong at home and Williamstown for its first win of the season . In F Section Footscrayare now up and running and will beatANZ Bank in what promises to be a very even game . Commonwealth Bank, now theres a rags to riches story, will make it two on the trot at the Trott against St . Leonarsds and in the match of the day in the section Uni High will have too much experience for an improving Whitefriars . In other games Old Essendon to beat latrobe and Doveton at home to open its account against St . Andrews . G Section winners, Monash Whites, Parkside and Old Carey . Todays Footy Tip - Allow yourself plenty of room when taking a free kick or kick after a mark, as the Cardinal sin in footy is to kick into the man on the mark .

UNIVERSITY BLACK S Bruce Williamson of University Blacks will celebrate his 50th game this week against Old Melburnians . Bruce, better known as "Willow" began with the Blacks in 1983 . "Willow" is another celebrated memberof the 1984 Reserves Premiership side in which both his skill and brawn aided the side to victory, his achievements also include competing in the 1985 I/V competition in Sydney, where it is rumoured he learnt his barbering skills . 1986 has seen "Willow" establish himself in the backline of the seniors where his talents never keep him far from the action . Well done "Willow" ! Everyone at Blacks also wish to congratulate Don, Geoff and Ernie for their hard work in establishing the Blacks under nineteen side . Although pre-season training began late, the character and determination of the side can not be questioned . The last two matches have seen the side come from several goals behind at three quarter time to take victory in the dying stages of both games . Well done fellows!

Among the best for Princes Hill was "Meldrum (4 gls.)", (Paul Meldrum of Carlton fame in 1986) . 10 YEARS AGO - 197 6 In a sensational term, North O .B . (A) leading U . Blues 9 .13 to 9 .7 at the last change, kicked 9 .2 to 7 .2 to win by 19 points . Carroll (4), Anderson, S . Maguire (NOB) and Booth, Lyle hager (Blues) were best . Who captained Coburg, Caulfield Grammarians, M .H .S .O .B ., Monash Blues . tim Collie played a superb game for Monash Blues with 8 goals from a half-forward flank in his team's 2 point win over Uni Blues and won the match with 2 goals in the last five minutes . Final scores wer 16 .17 (113) to 17 .9 (111) . 20 YEARS AGO - 196 6 Coburg's defeat of Old Scotch and Melbourne High's win over Old Paradians left M .H .S . alone on top of the A Section premiership list . M .H .S . won it in the first quarter, kicking 4 .3 . to 1 .1, and only managed 2 .6 after quarter time . Parade spoiled their chances by kicking 4 .11 . Surprises in C Section were wins by Hampton Rovers and West Brunswick over previously undefeated North Old Boys and Monash Uni . Ken "Bones" Rogers, after 15 years and 277 games with Kew, had finally hung up his boots . the club had recently honoured Ken'sdedication by naming the best first year player trophy the "Ken Rogers Trophy" . Ken won interstate selection also in his long career. John Dillon waselected to the Executive Committee of the V .A .F .A . in place of Mir Geoff Moore who had resigned . Collegians farewelled Neil Evans after 150 games as Neil was off to Berkeley University, U .S .A . to study under the American Space Programme . 35 YEARS AGO - 195 1 Ormond continued its slump when Ivanhoe (up for B Section) kicked 6 .4 to Ormond's solitary goal in the last quarter to win by 7 points . Skipper Wal Sparkes, Neil Whittaker, the Clarkes and the Rosenbergs were Hoes' best while Stock, Sheehan and Hardy battled like tigers all day for Ormond . In a stirring finish Old Melburnians beat Univ . Blues by a point - 16 .13 to 16 .12 . Old Xaverians, down from A Section, and without a victory after 3 games, were hoping that, under captain-coach Esmond Downey and experienced players in Gordon Laird, Mick Peppard, Brian LeFebvre, Jack Greenway and Adrian Schrader, victory would soon be theirs . Kew, after 30 wins straight, went down to Malvern for whom TeddyJane, Dave Bills, Fred Booth and Rod Curtis were best . Trophy winner for Kew was Ken Rogers, superb on the wing yes, the same man you read about above - 15 years later.

Personality Pars 150 GAMES AT ORMON D All at Ormond Amateur Football Club would like to congratulate Graeme Andrew on reachin g the 150 game milestone for the club today . Graeme commenced playing with Ormond in the junior sides, coming through the ranks, where he made his mark by winning the best and fairestand captaining the under 19's in 1976 . Graeme has played in both the senior and reserves teams, mainly as a defender, where he has distinguished himself with his fine play, dashing runs and never say die attitude . Since 1984 Graeme has been captain of the reserves, a position he has capably filled which is highlighted by the fact he won the best and fairest for the reserves in 1984 and has captained the side to successive premierships . Graeme has also been a contributor for the club off the field, serving on committee and undertaking various other duties to support the club . Graeme's dedication to the club, both on and off field, is a fine example of what contributes a good club man . Congratulation Graeme, we wish you well for today and the future and hope you continue playing many more games at Ormond . IVANHOE AMATEUR S All at Ivanhoe wish to congratulate Vinnie "Flash" Sammartino on playing his 50th game against Bulleen-Templestowe today . Vinnie the local Italian sprint champion, has contributed to the club as both a player and disc jockey . His efforts are enjoyed by all and sundry . Best of Luck Samma and for your next 50 .

MILESTONES! St . Bernard s Saturday 26th April Against Old Xaverians : Andrew Nathan - 50 game s Anthony Purcell - 50 games Saturday 3rd Ma y Against Therry: Michael Overman - 100 game s

Well the season is now underway and we have all had our complaints . Old Xaverians have played St. Bernards twice and I would like to comment on the Reserve grade . The standard in these two games was excellent and due in no small measure to the VAFA umpires supplied . Well done to both of you . Fawkner supplied their own Ompire in the next game and he did an excellent job . Parkside came up with a great idea that may be well worth looking at and supplied two umpires in the Reserves and it was a great success . Against St. Bernards and Old Xaverians in the firsts, a St. Bernards supporter approached the umpire and for a moment I was worried . No need, he complemented the umpire on a job well done saying "We have had two umpires each week, but if we had you each week we could not complain, you did a great job" .

300 AMATEUR GAME S Not often do people see such dedication or commitmentto an Amateur Club, but such is the case with boundary umpire Robbie Hill . Robbie not only runs the boundary for the reserves but after a quick drink he returns to the ground and does the senior game also . For 300 games now Robbie has thundered the boundary line . Everyone at Bulleen-Templestowe not only congratulate butadmire the job you do ROBBIE HILL .

150 AT COMMONWEALTH BANK Congratulations to Neil Reeves who playe d his 150th club game against Old Essendon last week . Mainly playing in defence, Neil's trademark is his long kicking to position with either foot . Neil joined the club in 1974 and would have played many more games if not for two overseas trips and enforced holidays . A best and fairest winner in the seconds in 1977 and reserves captain in 1984 and 1985 . Well done Neil!

100 UP TO WIZAR D All at Bulleen-Templestowe congratulate Malcolm Palmer on reaching a 100 games for the Btillants .Since donning theBlue and Goldjumper the wizard" has performed some magical efforts, vith his high marking, hard tackling and straight -cicking he has endeared himself to all at B ulleenTemplestowe . Lastseason saw Malcolm win the Bu Ilants Best and Fairest much to the delight of his proud father Don . Congratulations Malcolm and everyone at Bulleen-Templestowe hopes o see the "wizard" for many more years yet.

100 UP AT BULLEEN UNITED Ex-Resie coach Craig "Birdman" Vietch wa s coaxed out of retirement for his 100th game in helping out for a win for the old team . Craig has been playing for eight years at Bulleen United, and to retire with only ninety nine games forthe Bulls, missing manydue to serious injury, would have been a great disappointment to his teammates . Congratulations Craig .

Personality Pars 200 UP TO CLUB STALWAR T All at West Brunswick would like to congratulate Graeme Briggs on reaching his 200th club game against Blaclava today . Graeme has had a distinguishedcareerwiththeclubwith hisachievements including U/19 best and fairest in 1977 and successive reserve best and fairests in 1981 and 1982 . Graeme's football prowess is renowned around the club but his ground play is most outstanding, always prepared to put his body in at every encounter . In season 1986 Graeme has put together three fantastic games in the Reserves and as the season progresses his football is getting better and better . Graeme still has plenty of dash and with a bit of luck should be around playing with West Brunswick for many years to come . Well done Graeme . BRUNSWICK This week sees two more Brunswick player s reach their 50 game milestones . Congratulations to LarsCordesand Mark Davenport forachieving this career highiight . Both these "boys" are excellent contributors and their efforts over recent4imes have assisted our club to achieve its on-field success . Still only young in years both Lars and Mark must now make the three figure game total an important objective for their continuing career at Brunswick . STATE BANK CAPTAIN REACHES 50 All at State Bank would like to congratulate Ron Gniel on playing his 50th game today against Peninsula O .B . Ron's ability to win the ball at all costs is a great inspiration to his teammates and the club recognized this virtue by appointing him captain of the senior side . Ron is an intergral part of the side and consistently sets up many plays. Well done Ron, however the club hopes your next 50 won't take quite as long!

DOVETON Congratulations to Michael Page and Pa t Brodie from all at Doveton SJOC on playing their 50th games last week against Old Essendon . Both these players came to us in the 1983 seaon when the St . John's Club was based at Fotheringham Reserve in Dandenong at the height of the gypsy days (Here this Year Where next year?) . Mick, although our main ruckman in 1983 has since consolidated in the half-back line, and been as strong a club man as he is a defending players in that time . Pat has proven to be a versatile player, taking positions all over the ground, booting a few goals occasionally, and often filled such gaps in a team that adaptability to the situation require . N .B . Mick just made 50 games before work committments took him away for the present ti me . Peter Donald, Doveton SJOC's sterling nimble footed reserves umpire racked up his 100th game running the boundary against old Essendon . Congratulations Peter .
