Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century . Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world . Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U .S .A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .
Australia's favourite beer.
Last week's round was a good one to even up the competition . North Old Boys, Bulleen-Templestowe and De La Salle share the lead, whilst Marcellin, Old Scotch and Caulfield Grammarians are in ;he relegation zone at this early stage . Last year's premiers Ormond have definitely found their feet! They have won 4 of their last 5 games and have knocked off top sides North Old Boys and De La Salle! Their 29 point win over North Old Boys at the Gunn Reserve was North's second defeat for the season . Phil Kingston in the centre and Brad Nash on the half back flank are having very consistent years . And, where North be without the Strength of ruckman/centre half back Paul Considine? I know I tipped Old Scotch to win but i didn't think they would win by more than 10 goals over the Blues . Scotch started badly as usual, but put on 7 goals in the second quarter to give them the lead at half time . After the break, the Blues collapsed adding just 3 points whilst Scotch got their running game going . Rover Ric Senior and defender Rob Fuller, both with Richmond experience, played major parts in the Cardinals win . Collegians bettered their 106 point win over Ivanhoe last week with a 114 point win over Caulfield Grammarians . The Lions kicked 9 goals in the third quarter, and full forward Ian Roberts, a fast lead and true kick, notched up 9 majors . Collegians were lucky to be playing at No . 3 Albert Park because they would not have kicked 27 goals on most other grounds . Collegians have now won 4 on end after losing their first 3, whilst Caulfield have lost 5 in a row after winning their first 2 . What a contrast for the Albert Park neighbours ! Bulleen-Templestowe would b~ pleased with the four points against Marcellin from their 9 point victory . It was very muddy, both sides scoring just one point in the final term . Mal Palmer went off with a shoulder injury and Tony Keenan is also out with shoulder trouble . De La Salle scored an 8 point win over Ivanhoe in a game that was close all day - a point at both quarter and half time and a goal at three quarter time . Tim Cooke in the centre and Pat Maher on the ball continue giving the De's great drive each week . So is young Adams for Ivanhoe ! This weeks round of matches looks particularly interesting ! Collegians riding the crest of a wave will start with plenty of confidence . However I'm mindful of Laurie Aghan's recent word s side with charactera good side - and a side
Peter FrenchPreviews Til 0-days Game s
Well, somewhat of an improvement with 3 winners . In fact between us Ross and I picked the card Credit to Scotch on its victory and yet again the old 'crisis' meeting produced a winner . Ormond's win has certainly kept it in touch with the leaders whilst the Blues loss, imagine kicking just one behind after half time, has meant that for the moment the students have lost touch . Ivanhoe too has its share of worries, especially now that a couple of League Clubs are watching Peter Adams every move . The weeks rain turned some grounds into quagmires and North will be one A Section club happy to have the Ormond game behind it . Collegians are really on fire . Coach Bruce Ferguson this season - Schober, Bickford, Kahn and Fraser puts it down to time . Some of his new players now know the other players and their style of game and certainly the Lions are the form horse at the moment . Their match today against BulleenTemplestowe promises to be a ripper and personally I'm really looking forward to it . De La got home in a close one and despite CBOC put in a shocker against the Blacks whilst the worst percentage of the top 5 sides and Old Brig hton had yet another important home even at this stage I'm prepared to say that the win . O.M's are in strife and although St . Bernard's final four will come from this group, although its appear that way their policy of going for youth far too early to name the side that will miss . will again in my opinion serve them well in the CoachJohn Pollard mustbe inwardly delighted tough weeks ahead . They ceratinly showed me with their overall position, bearing in mind the and John Wise that they're prepared to have a injuries that have hit the club to date . go . At the other end Marcellin and Caulfield will ~*~~**~****~~* * have to find something pretty soon or I'm afraid it'll be back to B Section . I ;ve left Old Scotch In my first C Section match of the season so out of this scene because all along I've believed far I was most impressed with St . great that the Cardinals have had the makings of a fight back against Old Trinity whoKevin's now fully really good side and it must have been a source realize that C Section is quite a step up from D . of immense frustration to coach Barry Price Old Camberwell are lying last with just one win, thatuntillastweekatleast, hissidewaslanguishing but they pushed leaders MHSOB to a point and on the bottom . Now that they've cleared that ceratinlythefinalistsandrelegationsareanyone's small hurdle and with the players available Old guess at the moment . Sco tchwi'llwin' enough games to stay in the big *~~**~**~x**~~~ time for another year .
In B Section Old Xaverians for the second week in a row got home in a nail biter . I'll bet there are very few sides that have won matches where their opponents have doubled their shots at goal . For the record Old Xavs 7 .2 .44 defeated Old Paradians 4 .17 .41 . For those who know him can you imagine how Gerard Sholley wouyld have felt when the siren sounded and against his old side too! Although not knowing him as well as some I do know he'II not despair and the return game at Elsternwick Park on August 2nd may well decide what happens to both clubs for 1 987 as Parkside's consistencyand improvement on 1985 suggests to me that the A grade dream may become reality at long last . With the evenness existing in B Section at the moment Therry has pulled itself togetherand in the pastcouple of weeks moved from the bottom to being kept out of the top 4 by percentage only . St . Kilda
Coburg fell from second to fifth after losing at home to Balaclava and D Section has certainly split into two groups . The battle for survival and promotion will be keenly contested . Bulleen United and Old Essendon remain the only unbeated Senior sides with State Bank and Peninsula OB (E) and Uni High and Footscray Tech .(F) as their main challengers . In the Reserves Brunswick and State Bank both from E Section are the only clubs left with a chance to capture 'the champions tag' whilst in the Under 19's Ormond (Section 1) and Old Paradians (Section 3) are yet to lower their colours . Looking now at todays games and what a beauty the clash at the Harry Trott will be .
perhapslCoilegia nToday ir tis incesitb'surpese'twin over Ormond and for Bulleen-Templestowe a test of its depth although Mal Palmer and Vince Asdagi are likely to be over injuries . Although may miss again . Tony Keenan Whatever the weather the ground will be good and the one on one duels between the Rand Ric Demarte likes GregpKazuro (BT) and ichard Schober ( c;) Ga ry Irvine (C) and MAI Palmer (BT) and Steve Bickford (C) and Phil Espenchied (BT) promise to highligh . wha t t igame I wonder whether Andy be a very 9 Smythe will pick up Ian Herman or will he be given the job on young Roberts? Will Bruce Ferguson play Richard Herman on the wing or upforward? Not only will this game be a battle of tactics but also of skill and desperation and there's bound to be plenty of both . I'rn going for Bulleen-Templestowe because I feel they're more even and a little bit more down to earth than Collegians who have been allowed to play as they please in their tw o recent outings . Consistency is a word that is not always found in Amateur Football and I think the Lions are at the end of this little run . North are back at Brens and play Ivanhoe who were a trite unlucky last week . North were brought down by a more tenacious side in Ormond but will bounce back today and beat Ivanhoe . They have the tall timber in Peter Wright and Paul Considine who is having a great season, to match it with Messrs . Howard and Taylor and their small men are as good . They're a bit stronger in defence and despite a practice match loss will return to the winning list today . What hope does Caulfield have? They play De La away and as De La are not know for their on field generosity to visiting sides they face a daunting task . I've no doubt they'll give De La a fright for a while as their pride was surely hurt last Saturday . However football matches go four quarters and by the days end De La will be in front and looking for a big win to improve its poor percentage and also to stay in the hunt for the double chance . It will be a big game at Bulleen for both Marcellin and Old Scotch, and today's precious 4 match points will be fought for as hard as any in the whole of the Association . The loser will really be left behind and the winner will receive the confidence that it can survive . At Bulleen Marcellin are always a handful although the Blues found them easy and for the Eag les to win they would need to get the jump on Scotch as overall the Cardinals have by far the better players who until last Saturday were either out of form or too undisciplined . The heart says Marcellin but reality Old Scotch and for a final two bobs worth - I hope I'm wrong ! Unive Blues meet Ormond at the Uni and despite a pretty good record against the'Monds ' THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986
in recent years there's no way I could select them after Ormonds recent efforts against both De La and North and the Blues lethargic display in the second half last week . The Ormond brains trust and players would fully realize that you simply cannot afford to lose to the side below you and thus to stay in the race is surely plenty of incentive for Ormond . ******~*~~~**~~ Match of the day in B Section is probably at Oak Park between Therry and Old Paradians . This will be a good test for Therry although I'm of the opinion that it might be a fortnight or so early for Bernie Dunn who was bringing his side on slowly but surely . Still that's the luck of the draw and if they can beat O .P: s today they will have certainly arrived, especially as the visitors will still be cut at having last weeks game pinched from them . Both sides will play a very similar style and in a display of confidence i think Therry might just win . Old Xavs will be well tested by the Blacks who are also coming good . The Blacks will certainly match Old Xavs in the air and can be seen to have more need for the win after glancing at the ladder. That's all very well . Xavs deserve top place and favoritism in the game . They have been more consistent and sides that continually win the close games are sides that are playing with confidence and refusal to give in and at home Old Xavs will win again . Fawkner will return to the winning list by beating O .M .'s who would hrdly be looking forward to the northern journey . Both sides are down at the present and victory will mean much to the fortunes of either club . St. Bernard's and Old Brighton clash at W. Essendon . Far better sides than Old Brighton . have lost at St . Bernard's who showed plenty of heart last Saturday and even allowing for Old Brighton's win over Fawkner it's the " Bernard's" for me . St . Kilda CBC, a real enigma are at home to Parkside . In other years I might have gone for the Saints, but Parkside has really emerged as a top side, one that's capable of consistent play week in week out, whereas St . Kilda is far too hot and cold and rely too much on too few . M-f ~f~ %M X~ ~-F M f f f
In C Section MHSOB will reverse last year's Grand Final loss to Old Trinity and retain leadership of the Section . Trinity's ability to play out a game is under question and they meeta MHSOB side who've been keenly awaiting this game . St . Kevin's lost no friends last week and on 'Past Players Day' will find enough to beat the Rovers who let me down last week. Banyule are getting their act together and they'll beat Kew whilst Thomastown at home are the tip to win and win well against Old Camberwell who will live to rue last week's narrow loss . Finally in another big game Old Haileybury are the tip against AJAX because Steve Pinch didn't want me to pick his side! Actually AJAX at home will test Old Haileybury but there's a new spirit at McKinnon this year and although this will be in tis own way as big a test as last week I'll stick with the visitors :
The big game in D Section will be played at Albert Park between Balaclava who are 4th and Old Mentonians who have quietly moved into second spot. As home ground advantage will play a big part in this game . Balaclava will win, though the selection is not made with any confidence . Monash will continue on its winning way by accounting for West Brunswick, and Preston will put another dent in Coburg's hopes of returning to the top 4 . Heathe rton will ensure that Rick Sykes has another unhappy day by beating Power House and Old Ivanhoe should make ittwo in a rowbysurprising North Brunswick. In E Section Bulleen United are not likely to be extended by Old Geelong and nor is State Bank by St. Bede's. Brunswick I feel can cause the boilover by beating Peninsula and Clayton will stay in touch with the top sides by beating Uni Reds. In the final match which is sure to be a hard fought encounter e!sternwick's unique knowledge of its own ground should give it the call over Williamstown who notched up its first win last week and is bound to take the game right up to its hosts . It wou!d do we!I to remember how victory was snatched from its grasp in the corresponding game last season .
Footscray Tech can expect its toughest garpo for some weeks at the hands of Doveton who have finally found its 1985 form . I'm goinn for Doveton and note that Mallon is back to his best and he could prove the key. Latrobe had its second win last week but wil struggle today at Albert Park where I believe ANZ can win and join Latrobe on 8 points . Whitefriars are in need of a win and may just get up against a rapidly improving Common . wealth Bank whilst Uni High would see its match at Patterson River as a nice day out and a chance to build on an already impressive percentage . St . Andrew's must be a show at home against Old Essendon . However the 'Dons have not put a foot wrong and their unbeaten record will remain intact after today . Monash Whites are again in the match of the day and at home shold have the numbers to hand IeGTV-9 who have made a moste ncourag ing debut in the VAFA . In other games Eltham at home is sure to be a far different proposition this week although I still like Parkside and Old Carey will surely kick the sweep in beating Williamstown . Finally don't forget, we need your support next Sunday against the ACT and the VFA! !

Personality Pars 150 TO SENIOR UMPIR E Congratulations go to Ken Coughlan, who umpired his 150th match last Saturday. Ken has been evith the V .A .F .A .U .A . for 8 years, after running the boundary for 3 years with De La Salle . Ken has umpired many finals over the years - no less than 10 Grand Finals in the central position . They are :- D,E,F Sections, U19 Championship and A,B Reserves . Ken also achieved "A" and "B" Section Grand Finals as a boundary umpire, obviously Ken's good looks, worldly charms and relaxed running style caught the advisor's eye . Ken says his biggest highlight of his career, was being the central umpire in the "A" Section Preliminary Final in 1985 . ,,Nell done Ken on achieving this milestone, we all look forward to seeing you umpire for many years to come . FAREWELL BILL Y Everyone at Ivanhoe wishes to congratulate veteran Billy Baker on playing his last game for the Hoes' against Collegians on 17/5/86 . Billy's 9 years of senior football has produced many exciting performances from the nuggetty back-pocket, highlighted by a 1st XVIII best and fairest in 1981 . Billy has also been prominent at all club functions falling asleep at nearly all in recent years . Best of luck overseas, Billy, we hope to see you back in the future . 100 AT .THOMASTOW N Congratulations from all at thomastown to Gerry Alberti who played his 100th game against St . Bernard's on Saturday 24th May 1986 . Gerry has always been a very keen competitor in all his games and tries very hard . We hope your next 100 games Gerry will both be a credit to yourself and to the club . Gerry played some very good games with the seniors last year, but has not struck his true form yet . I'm sure he can lift his form for the rest of the season . HOME GAMES AT OLD XAV S Old Xaverians supporters are reminded that as a result of the Fixture Draw a spate of home games srill commence this week. Luncheons will be held at the Olympic Park Function Centre on each home game . Please contact Bill Carroll - 67 5407, Wayne Athorne - 67 6831 for information . Both the numbers are work numbers . The first of these functions was a success and reports on the meal excellent . 50's AT BRUNSWIC K This week two more Brunswick players reach their 50 game tally with the club . Brad Watterson and Peter Conduit - congratulations . "Watto" after coming back from an injury earlier this year is starting to hit his straps and show the form that was all important to us in September last year . He has the responsible, on-field leadership role of vice-captian again this year and is also a member of the Club Committee . "Bomber" joined us in 1982 and after a bit of an absence has now settled in and reached this important highlight in fine style . (His 5 goals last week prove this) . Both boys are great club members and we hope to see them continue and make the 3 figure total target in their careers with Brunswick . WHITEFRAIR'S RELIE F the Whitefriar lads were most impressed with the blonde lass at Old Essendon Social Club selling sex for two dollars (actually it was three for a dollar) . The Winner was first gamer David Sutton who is only just back from his honeymoon . David must have been relieved to find that the raffle prize was a bottle of champagne as he left immediately with his new wife for his second honeymoon . Maybe the blonde knew something?
