,At last there appears to be a little consistency in form amongst A Section teams with 5 of the top teams winning uek . Leaders De La Salle dropped to 3rd with Collegians now on top on percentage from North Old goys and Bulleen-Templestowe (4th) . Bulleen Templestowe back at full strength beat De La Salle by 26 points . Bulleen were in complete control and led by 10 goals at one stage in the last quarter until De La Salle rattled on 6 goals. Tony Keenan at full ror :: . :rd (5 goals), Neal Palmer ( 3) & Shane Gilmo re all returned . Leigh Brannigan & Phil Espenchied were aso valuable players . Pat Maher & Mick Greene were grand triers and Phil Kerin kicked 4 goals in the last :erm to finish with 5. University Blues led all day against a weakened Ivanhoe to win by 13 points . Ivanhoe lost Tony Balcombe Jur'ng this game and started without Peter Adams, Tony Course and State Representative Chris Taylor now at F t ::roy. It was rumoured that Mike Yeo might play for the Blues - he didn't but Mike Yandell controlled the ruck in any event . The elusive Andy Wallis speared 4 goals from the forward flank . North Old Boys scored a mammoth 112 point win over Caulfield Grammarians, even though the `Fields' -Jcked 18-14. North scored 37-12 with 9 goals in the first quarter and 11 goals in each of the 2nd and 3rd terms . Caulfield have now lost 7 games in succession . Only 2 players really stood out . VAFA centreman Alan Nalder playing with a hamstring injury at full forward kicked 10 gooals . Egan (7), Cahill ( 6) & Hanlon & Morse (5 each) ~,are North's goalscorers. Collegians, with a 10 goal third quarter overcame Marcellin by 79 points - a comparatively small margin by Collegians recent standards. Ian Robe rt 's at full forward finished with 7 goals and heads the table with 51 goals. Is the ton within his reach? Ormond fought off a late challenge by Old Scotch to win by 7 points. The Cardinals fought back with 5 goals in the final quarter. It is good to see Russelll Barnes back after a hand injury. . Phil Kingston continues to play strong, consistent football on the wing .

Well what about No rth OB last week - 37 goals . There must be something in the water up at Bruns. as co-tenants UHSOB went one better with 45 goals in its match against a hapless ANZ Bank. There were highlights galore - St . Kilda CBOC kicked an incredible 16 .1 in the second half to topple B Section leaders Old Xaverians . Charlie Capi ro n was in great form kicking 8 goals at the spearhead . Another Interstate squad man Alan Nalder got 10 at full forward for Caulfield Grammarians against No rth . In C Section Thomastown had a crushing 16 goal win over MHSOB which saw the High School out of the top 4 for the first time this season . Banyule moved in after an exciting 9 point win over Old Haileybu ry. ., . ., . . . Coburg kept within striking distance with an important 2 point win over Old Mentonians in D Section and Monash Blues crashed against Balaclava allowing Preston to take the top positon . In E Section Old Geelong came from behind to snatch a 1 point victory over Clayton, Bulleen United won well at Mt . Eliza to remain undefeated and St . Bedes edged closer to a place in the four with a good win over Uni Reds in a high scoring game. In F Section St . And rews & Whitefriars turned on a very entertaining game with victory going to St . And rews by 17 points in yet another high scoring game. Old Essendon continued on its winning way in accounting for St .Leonards & La Tro be got home from Footscray Tech . by 13 points, in yet another close game . Finally in G Section GTV-9 playing with just 15 men managed to get up and pip Eltham College Old Boys by just 1 point, and Old Ca rey confirmed its the side to beat by accounting for Monash Whites . There are two most important matches in A Section today. At East Malvern De La Salle are at home to the very in form Collegians and at Bruns . No rt h OB play host to Bulleen Temp. It really is a promoters dream with the top 4 all clashing . What a double header at Elsternwick Park these 2 games would be ! 4

Perhaps we shall all have to wait until September, although Ormond and a rapidly improving Univ.Blues are bound to have other thoughts . Collegians must start favourite . It has won its last 6 games on end, the most consistent run by any side in A Section this season, and four of that 6 have been won by an incredible 106, 104, 76 and 79 points respectively. That form warrants favouritismm in any company. Collegians appear to save their best for the second half and certainly the form of its goal to goal line headed by Vice-Captain and full-back Si; ::on Williams, centre half back Ric Schober, centre man Peter Kahn, centre half forward Stephen Bickford and spearhead the under-rated Ian Roberts, who is now leading goalkicker in A Section and will cause the De La brain's trust of John Pollard, ,; ~: hn O'Halloran & Co . to have spent many hours of mid week planning . Only a fool would discount De La, especially after a loss and especially at home. Provided Phil Kearn is left at full forward he will worry the Lions Vice Captain whose pace advantage will be his greated asset . Mick Deveson will be a worry either in attack or defence and young Ryan is improving with every week and may be just the foil for Roberts . Paddy Maher is having a great season and G-~ry Connolly has the concentration to tag the dangerous Herman . I hope they have another tagging doe as Peter Wolff & Ga ry Irvine, half forward and wing are as good as there are in A Section and I rv ine in particular a prime mover who with Tregear & Kahn make up the best centre line in A Section . collegians can now afford the luxury of playing the never say die Stua rt Hinchen on a back flank and with the return from overseas of Gre g Parsons plus Schober in the middle has the sort of half back line that Coach Ban Ferguson must have dreamt about in years gone by . It has to be Collegians although they can expect far more pressure today than what may have been experiences over the past month or soo, and this victory will mean another test past . Perhaps a study of the Univ. Blues game plan is required . After all they've beaten the Lions twice this year ! North & Bulleen-Temp . What a game awaits us all here. Both sides are full of big news, will both be desperate and will be keyed up to win . BulleenTemp. may have had the tougher match last week, although they did lead De La by 10 goals at one stage and for that reason I'll go for the Bullants today. No rt h's huge win was against an opposition that was both tentative and completely overwhelmed, apart from a dip in the last quarter. Thus, I'll be surprised if Tony Egan kicks 7 from a FLANK TODAY, AND Brian Hanlon & Luke Moo re may have forgotten that there is a defensive side to ruck roving . They'd bette r THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER -- 1986

ber or Leigh Branagan has really hit top form , covered many a hole in the De La defence last .,2Gk and created many opportunities up forward . i, :onder if Mark Hannabery will play Paul Considine on Tony Keenan whose 5 goals last week ,.,,as a fine effort, after a three week lay off or will jepome Griffin have first go? Andy Smyth has found ,„s old Su°obable duel Cahill be a whilst Asdogr" p ,, ahlight . . North should win in the ruckk where Gerard Brown has found a niche and is being well _;pported by the veteran Borcich . Steve Hibbert or Bruno Conti will, more than likely pick up Mal Palmer and whoever gets young Craig Shellard will have his ;,ands full . Ric Demark is still a dangerous rover and all who've seen him are impressed with young Phil Espenchied . The tactics of rival coaches Mark Hannabe ry & Laurie Aghan will play a big role but i l stick with the combine who will have gained more rom its win that North . In other games you just couldn't see Caulfield upsetting Univ.Blues who are becoming a pretty capable combination . Mike Yandell is arguably the best big man in A Section at present whilst the havits of Andy Wallis & Richard Polkinghorne have been recognized (some would say at last) by the State selectors . I understand this will be Chris Stone's final game for the 'fields before his transfer interstate. I wish him well . He has been a fine player for his cclub since its rise from C Section & represented this Association & the Australia) Amateurs with distinction . No doubt Tootell will use the "win it for Stoney theme" bu t Caulfield are simply not good enough and the Blues will stay in touch by winning today . Marcellin & Ormond meet at Elsternwick Park tomorrow and despite a reasonable record against Ormond over the years are a far cry from the sides that have won past success . They'll be competitive for a couple of quarters and feature in some good passages of play but they can't play 4 quarters and will lack both the strength and experience to upset Ormond who will return to the four after winning tomorrow. I give Scotch more than a show at home against Ivanhoe. The loss of Chris Taylor to Fitzroy and injury to Peter Adams has upset the balance and Scotch showed last week against Ormond that it's not far away. Golly they have some of the best players in A Section in Rob Fuller, John Mooir, Andy Smith, Richard Senior, Fergus Kiel, Peter Sherwen, Peter B ro wn, Stuart Glascott & who with youngsters Warrick Matthews & Will Allen form the nucleus of a team that even at this stage is capable of playing in the finals . You couldn't say that about a Caulfield or a Marcellin or even an Ivanhoe and I'm more than confident that Scotch will get up today to give me 5 winners in A Section!

PHONING OF SCORES SENIOR and JUNIOR SECTION S BEFORE 5 P.M . RESERVES BEFORE 3 P.M . to Mr. PAUL HALLY at 379 8171 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - - 1986

In B Sectionn joint leaders Parkside at home will be untroubled by Old Melburnians who will need to pull up its socks if it is to remain in B Sectioon & Old Xaverians, despite last weeks loss will be too strong for Therry at Oak Park. The match of the day is at Fawkner where I favour the home side to upset Uni Blacks and thus remain well in the hunt for a place in the 4 . Old Collegians face a danger game against St .Bernards whose confidence is sky high . Parade put in a poor one last week and cannot afford to slip up as Fawkner is poised to take over its position . With this incentive plus the return of Paul Considine I lean towards OP's. In the remaining game St . Kilda CBOC will beat Old Brighton in the battle of the South . The big one in C Section will be played at Albert Park between a rapidly improving AJAX and a most impressive Thomastown . I saw AJAX for a good while last week and was most impressed with the play of youngsters Marks, Briskin, Vellerman & Friedman . They are sure to give Thomastown a run for its money, but 'town will win, as they will be just as determined, far stronger and can rely on the likes of Fellows, Assetta & Capt .Coach Harisiou to steady the ship in any AJAX tempest . Other C Section winners, Banyule, St .Kevins (where Old Haileybu ry never play well) Old Trinity & MHSOB . It's a great round of matches in D Section with the top 6 all opposed . In the big one between leaders P re ston and 3rd placed Old Mentonians I'm confident that at home Preston can win and consolidate top place . Although Monash crashed against Balaclava last week you can bet they'll come out more determined at Coburg for whom the game is vital . In what will be a close game all day I've a hunch the 'Burger's' can cause another upset. Balaclava will halt Heatherton's hopes of revival & PowerHouse will make it 2 on the trot by beating Old Ivanhoe At Ross Gregory. In the battle for Brunswick I like Wests . In E Section its State Bank to beat Brunswick, Bulleen United against Williamstown, Pininsula over Clayton, OGGS again against Uni Reds & finally St . Bedes to continue its good form by beating Elsternwick on the No. 2 ground . St. Leonards & St .And rews meet at Elsternwick Park where St . And rews a re logical victors & Doveton journey to Donvale & will be well tested by Whitefriars, but will still win . Latro be are riding high toiiowing last weeKs win & have the form to beat Commonwealth Bank at Harry Trott & Old Essendon can be expected to kick the sweep against ANZ Bankk . Even at home I can't see Footscray Tech stopping UHSOB who are in brilliant form . G Section winners will be Parkside, Old Ca rey & Monash White. Let's hope for last Saturday's outstanding conditions for football again today !

CLUBS who delivered flags to ELSTERNWICK PARK for display on Sunday, June 8th at the V .F.A. match may collect them from the office foyer during the week . wishing to host a FINALS MATCH on their ground should apply to the General Manager by July 4thCLUBS . NOTE : There will be no Member's Meeting in July . A Secretaries meeting will be held in August (4th) and the next Member's Meeting on 1st September .

FROM THE MINUTE BOOK 50 YEARS AGO - 31/3/3 5 The Member for Parkdale stated that his Club wished to object to the practice of certain umpires in addressing or referring to players by name instead of number and also to protest at the "lack of condition" of umpires which prevented them from keeping up with the games after half time, thus leading to muc h balling-up and consequent adverse effect on the play!!! We've come along way in 50 years haven't well (ED) 11/5/36 Umpire Borland reported that the match between North Old Boys and Old Paradians set down for May 2nd was not played as North Old Boys had been unable to produce a suitable ball for play until 3 .35 p.m . and the Old Paradians had refused to play . Two new balls had been produced at 2 .40 p.m . but it wa s impo .sible to keep them inflated owing to defective bladders . An old bladder was tried in one of the new balls but had burst when inflated . (You can just picture the scene ED! ) It was resolved that the match be replayed at the end of the season should it have a bearing on the final four or relegation to C Section . (ED.)

10 YEARS AGO - 197 6 The long awaited clash between the two Unbeaten teams in'D',A .J .A .X . and Old Xaverians turned out to be atizzerasA .J .A .X . overwhelmed Old Xaverians to win, 26 .13 to 10 .7 . Best were Rozen, Ritterman, Schulberg, Bialek (A .J .A .X .) and Higgins, O'Neill, Sholley (Old Xaverians) . old Brighton member and member of Umpires' committee, John Sotheran, died suddenly. Ian Rice, captain of Collegians, had shown great form since joining the club in 1973, after being captain of the school team in 1972 and v inning best and fairest award . Runner-up in club best and fairest in 1973 and 1974, Ian won theaward in 1975, and hadalreadywon interstate representation against Tasmania in this season . 1 50gamestoOldHaileybury'si ron manAndrew Williams. Best and fairest in 1970, Andrew had given great service in the centre, wing and as a ruck rover . 'B' section captains were : Bob MacDonald (C .Gramm), Ian Rice(Coll .), Ian Davis(Geelong), Bill McWhinnie Ivanhoe), M . Power( Marc . ), Mike Yeo (0 . Carey), G . Carroll (0 . Parad .), J . Anderson (0 . Scotch), and Kevin White (St . Kilda) . 200 games to Parkside veteran Jim'Mumsey' Byrne, the only club member to play in the two premiership teams, 1963 and 1972 . Jim amazes the opposition with his long baggy shorts on his "muscle bound" body, and his long raking DROP KICKS . Only undefeated teams were : Old Haileybury, (C), A .J .A.X . (D), and West Brunswick (F) .

20 YEARS AGO - 1966 M .H.S .U.B . (A Section) suffered their firs t defeat for the year when they went down to Old Scotch in a close fought game . M .H .S . were still ontopby8pointstoCollegians while Old Scotch, level on 20 points with Caulfield Grammarians, were fifth on percentage . BestforUld Scotch were : Simpson,l . McLean 1 . Wilson, and for M .H .S . J . Nelson, Bowater, Featherby . With a great second half, Hampton Rovers, 13 .14 .92 almost toppled "C" Section leaders St . Bernard's, who owed their victory to their accurate kicking, 15 .6 .96 . J . Wilson, L. Smith and MacKenzie were Hampton's best, while G . Amott, Hanneberry and Reidy contributed to St . Bernard's early ascendancy . Geelong farewelled Dr. John McPhee, president for the last 12 years, who was leaving for an overseas appointment . John had been a player, and also senior and under 15 coach . His successor was Milton Poulston, a club stalwart of many years .

35 YEARS AGO - 195 1

15 YEARS AGO - 197 1 Collegians opened their account when they held off a determined challenge by De La Salle to score by 10 points . The only undefeated team after first round of homeandhomematches(9games)wasReservoir Old Boys in "D" Section . Old Paradians congratulated Graham Mansfield on his 150thgame .Graham had played in 4 premiership teams and represented Victoria at the 1964 carnival . Hampton Rovers' full-back John Dean had also reached 150 games after great service with the club, starting in the juniors . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - - 1986

Old Melburnians inflict Commonwealth Banks' first defeat when in a tight game they finished slightlybetter . Mal Hastie (ruck), Bryce Thomas (jet propelled on the wing) and Trevor Downs (back pocket) were stars for O .M .'s . In anotherclose game, Hampton Rovers (3rd) went down to University Blues (2nd) by 3 points, the final scores being 12 .21 .93 to 12 .18 .90 . Mick Eggleston was prominent all day with beautiful football while Rick Morrison was tireless and saved the game three or four times in the last quarter . It was a gre t fight-back by the Blues, who trailed by 20 puints at half-time . Sam Birtles played a great game for Rovers with 6 goals, while John Morgan, Merv Davidson and Jim McQueen were also prominent . 7

Adrian is also a good clubman featuring at many of our turns . Good luck for today Adrian and may the next 50 be just as good . 8

OLD XAVERIAN S During last week "The Sun" Newspaper ran an article on the Carlton great Jim GoonGn . Most Old Xaverian supporters were suprised to hear Jim coached Old Xavs . to its first premiership in 1938 . The only other ex VFL player to do that was Mick Green in 1981 . Mick still supports the Old Xaverians but we are worried . The two games this year have been Old Brighton and St. Kilda CBC . Thanks Mick . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986

LEONARDS NOTE S Thanks to Big Al Club Vice President who filled in the numbers in the seconds against Old Essendon and was one of the best on ground . Congratulations to Darrell Henry and his wife who have just had their secoond child . And well done Peter "Krackers" Kaneen, who, after numerous atternpts, finally put a shot through the big sticks in Round Seven, his onl y goal for the season . Good one "Krackers"! !

WELL DONE GRAHAM! Congratulations to GRAHAM NAYOR for recently playiing his 50th game for Balaclava . Graham has been around the club for a number of years now, and has proven himself a very good clubman . He is a regular at club functions and has shown that he can last with the very best of them . Graham has demonstrated his abilities in the ruck with more than a little success over the past few seasons, mainly in the seconds, and has shown that he a real competitor . Well done on your efforts in the past Graham, we hope to see you around the place for a couple of more seasons yet . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986

100 UP AT FAWKNER Congratulations to Gary Scott on reaching the 100 milestone. Gary is a keen clubman and fierce competitor, he has been around and seen the ups and downs involved with football but has stuck to the task with grim determination . -IR"NowG gEcIIÂŽN THE BLACK LIST (Ca) - Failed to phone final scores as required - Reserves by 3 p .m ., all other sections by 5 p .m . - FINE - FIVE DOLLARS . (Cb) - Also failed to phone scores by 5 .30 p .m . - FINE - TEN DOLLARS . (Cc) - Failed to phone scores (if necessary) or details, to Press Correspondent by 6 p .m. (B Section details - 6 .30 p .m .) - FINE - TEN DOLLARS .

THE SCORE ON THE SCORE S Some clubs, particularly in the highersections, seem to think they have the right to ring the Press Correspondent early on Saturday evening for scores in other matches in the section . Our phone is far too busy from 4 .45 p .m . till 9 p .m . to be able to give these scores - very often we haven't even got them - and any request will in future be turned down . There are several ways of obtaining scores of other games in your section - from Radio Statons 3DB, 3AW and 3LO, or by phoning the other grounds . GEORGE MCTAGGART Press Correspondent.

Everyone at Marcellin Old Collegians would like to congratulate the following players in reaching their 50 games in the last few weeks. Tony Paatsch, Tim O'Hehir, Paul Harvey, Paul Boemo, Chris Bourke and Luke Kiulighan . Tony Paatsch is a great competitor, using hi s strength effectively whether playing up forward or in defence. Also a member of last years successful B Grade Grand Final Side. Tim O'Hehir, having graduated from the Under 19 Grand Final win in 1984, played in 1985 B Grade Grand Final and now has cemented his place in the Seniors . Tim also keeps our bar staff very busy on Saturdays and after training . Paul Ha rvey is a keen competitor and uses his strength and heart to win the ball at all costs . Paul Boemo of Kar-Gas fame, is one of Marcellin's small brigade, is an opportunist, who can use his pace to set up many forward moves. Chris Burke has worked his way up from the 3rd to the lsts and has been a great clubman, since joining the Eagles . Luke Kiulighan,, played in the U19 Grand Final win in 1984 and then went overseas in 1985 to study and has made a comeback this year, but is yet to find top form and we hope he does soon . The committee and players would like to extend our congratulations to these players and hope to see them with the Club for many years to come. 12

BULLEEN-TEMPLESTOWE ( Ca) - $5 OLD GEELONG (Ca) - $5 PENINSULA O.B. RES. (Ca) - $5 There were a couple of mistakes in last week's issue - the fine for Uni Reds should have been $10 (not $5 as shown), as Seniors and Reserves were involved , The second section on the last - header (Ca) -- . old Camberwell etc. should have been deleted, as this was a reprint from the previous issue . 50 UP TO GOALIE Congratulations to Mark Sero ng who goal umpire d his 50th game on Saturday 14th June . Mark, who is one of the young brigade in the goals, goes about his task quietly and effectively and is one to watch come finals time . Mark's performances so far this year have not gone unnoticed as he was appointed to the U'19's V.A .F.A . v V.F.A . match on Sunday 8th June Well done Mark and we all wish you every success for the future. (Maybe V.F.L . material) . Who was the "Senior" umpire, after the 1/2 time break last Saturday, walked on to the ground with his partner and two goal umpires, went to hold the balll up to the time keepers only to find he had left the fottball in the rooms. You would think after 10 years of umpiring he would know that without a football, you don't have a match! (weekly award, very appropriate here) .

FIFTY AT F .I .T . Wayne "Ocka" O'Connor today plays his 50th senior game with F .I .T. Ocka who is renowned for his long accurate kicking has returned to F .I .T . this season after having a "spell" in 1985 . He formed part of the famous 1983 Premiership side "Centreline" and played a brilliant game in the pivot . Wayne is not recognised for his performances on the training track but nevertheless he has played many fine games for F .I .T . Well done "Ocka" and good luck for your next 50 .

50 GAMES TO TIM ( .EE AT BULLi:(FN UNITE~ After several years Tim Lee has cha ed-up 50 fo r the Bulls, missing quite a few by taking the Bulleen jumper all over Europe . Tim is enjoying his best season, rucking well, despite the inches he gives away, through determination and is slipping in for an occasional goal, unusual for this erstwile backman . A popular personality and great clubman, all the "Boyse" can see more in the future from the improving Timmy,

Stuart first played with Collegians in 1981 and settled straightintotheful l back position the senior side . Since that date Stuart has regularly accumulated football honours, eg, 1981 V .A.F .A . State U18side,1982 V .A .F .A .State U . 1 9side (captain), t983 Best and Fairest, 1984 V.A .F .A . Senior side, 1985 runner-up in the Best and fairest and club captain for the past two years . Stuart has received most of these honours :,hile playing at full back or centre-half-back, however in the last season or so as his girth has ,:Jdened and his responsibility increased Stuart has been forced to play in positions not entirely suited to his style of football eg wing (where he ::~issoundlythrashedand movedafter5minutes) . Despite this setback, Stuart at all times has shown great determination and leadership and everybody at Collegians extends their congratulations . 50 GA M ES AT ROVER L AN D All at Hampton Rovers congratulate Barry Duell on playing his 50th game this week against M .H .S .O .B . Barry commenced his career at the Rovers in 1981 with the Under 19's . Barry is renowned for his kicking style which is very unique but effective . Barry's determination playing on the backline is an inspiration, especially his vocal support to his teammates . Well done Barry, all at Hampton look forward to your next 50 .

100 GAMES FOR THE Q UIET ACHIEVER All at W est Brunswick would like to congratulate Mick Pryor on playing his 100th game againstHeatherton . Mick reaches this milestone after 7 years with the club and it is an example to anyone prepared to persist with a club through many mishaps . Mick carries his quiet determination into every game he plays with the club, alwaysbouncingbackafterbeing knockeddown, always going in for the ball regardless of the oddsstacked upagainsthim .Mickhasanuncanny sense of where the ball is and flies for many impossible marks to emerge from the pack with the ball securely in his grasp . Well done Mick and West Brunswick followers look for your spectacular play for many more years to come . 'SNEAK'SNEAKS IN 50 GAMES Congratulations to John Nicholls who today wil l play his 50th game at VA .FA . Headquarters. Sneak who over the past few seasons has only been able to play a handful of games due to work commitments, is a great clubman and is always present at Club Social turns. All at St. Andrews would like to see Sneak back at the Club full time, but your efforts in donning the gold and blue jumper whenever possible is greatly appreciated by all at the Club. All Collegians congratulate goal-sneak Ian "Robbie" Robe rts and Under 19's full forward Nick Schmidt, both of whom kicked their 50t h goal for the seaon last Saturday, booting 7 apiece . Robbie now heads the "A Grade" goal-kicking witn 51 goais while Nick does likewise in the Under 19s with 50. Well done Robbie and Nick . The Lions are very proud of you and wish you well for the balance of the season . Let's make it a ton each by the end of '86 . Congratulations are also due to Tony "Griffy" Griffiths & Andres "Rooter" Wright who each outdid themselves recently by kicking their firs t senior goal for the Lions. Can we expect another each by say 1990 ?
